PROJECT SUMMARY The proposed sustainable development project for the Muthu Raja Wela wetland area is driven by a comprehensive vision that considers environmental, social, and economic aspects. The primary goal is to create a built environment that harmoniously integrates with the natural surroundings, benefiting local communities and conserving the ecosystem for future generations. Key sustainable strategies include minimal site intervention, a low carbon footprint, off-site construction methods, sustainable energy integration, sensible material selection with an emphasis on reusability, eco-friendly construction techniques, eco-friendly material usage, and a strong focus on reuse and recycling strategies. Renewable energy sources are also incorporated.

The project's core objectives are to reduce resource consumption, minimize waste, and create a healthy, productive environment. Furthermore, it recognizes the vital role of raising awareness within the local community about the wetland's importance, fostering conservation efforts and sustainable resource management.

In summary, this project represents a holistic approach to environmental sustainability, harmonizing development with nature while promoting community well-being and ecological conservation.

The proposed project will prioritize sustainable use of natural resources and minimize the negative impact of development on the environment and the livelihoods of the local people.

SENSITIVE ECO SYSTERMS

The Muthurajawela Wetland is a large marshy area located in the western coastal region of Sri Lanka, near the town of Negombo . It is the largest peat bog in Sri Lanka and the fifth largest in South Asia. It covers an area of around 6,000 hectares and is considered as one of the most important wetlands in the country. The wetland is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including mangroves, fish, crustaceans, and migratory birds.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Muthurajawela wetland is located in the western coastal belt of Sri Lanka, covering an area of about 6,000 hectares. The wetland is considered to be one of the largest marshy lands in the country and is home to a variety of flora and fauna. Historically, the wetland was used for various purposes such as cultivation, fishing, and timber extraction. During the colonial period, the Dutch utilized the area for cinnamon cultivation, while the British introduced coconut plantations. The wetland also played a crucial role in the country's salt industry, with salt pans being established along the coast. However, over time, the wetland has faced numerous threats from human activities such as pollution, encroachment, and overfishing. In recent years, efforts have been made to conserve and protect the wetland, with the government declaring it a sanctuary in 1996

DESIGN APPROAH

A survey of the Muthuraj Wela wetland has revealed that over the past 10 years, human activities have negatively affected on most parts of the wetland. The local community in the Muhuraj Wela wetland relies on a huge range of activities for their livelihoods, such as fishing, tourism, boat safari, farming and small businesses. Due to pollution has had a negative impact on the local people's livelihoods.

The wetland is a rich and valuable natural resource, but the people are not fully aware of its potential to enhance their lives. This lack of understanding has led to the destruction of the environment and the negative effects on their own well-being.

The Muthurajawela Awareness Centre has to be environmentally friendly in order to give awareness to local people who are not fully aware of its potential . The design strategies are ideal to the site where it has the minimum impact to the site and surrounding .

Environmental sustainable design refers the minimizing negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of environmental sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.

PROJECT SUMMARY The Center for Performing Art and Culture in Nugegoda is a transformative project aimed at empowering youth through performing arts and culture. The center recognizes the importance of physical activity and offers opportunities for young people to improve their physical fitness, coordination, and flexibility. INTRODUCTION Nugegoda is a suburb of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Located approximately 10 kilometers southeast of Colombo city center, Nugegoda is a bustling and vibrant area that offers a mix of residential, commercial, and retail spaces. The suburb has undergone significant development in recent years and is now home to many modern high-rise buildings, shopping malls, supermarkets, restaurants, and cafes. It is also a popular residential area for middle-class families due to its convenient location and easy access to public transportation.

Nugegoda is known for its busy streets, which are always teeming with people and traffic. It is also home to several important landmarks, including the Nugegoda railway station, the Municipal Council, and the popular Open University of Sri Lanka. With its blend of modern amenities and traditional charm, Nugegoda is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

It also has cultural and religious sites like temples, churches, and mosques.

Analysis shows that Nugegoda stands out as a prominent education hub in Colombo due to its high number of educational sectors, schools, and institutes in the surrounding area. This concentration of educational institutions has attracted students from native districts, created job opportunities, and facilitated knowledge exchange. .

DESIGN APPROAH CRITICAL ARUGUMENT Problems were identified based on two questions: 1. What are the commercial city features that need to be added for the betterment of the education hub, Nugegoda?

2. What are the factors negatively affecting the quality of life of youth?

Main problem Nugegoda is a developing educational hub and urbanized city in Colombo, attracting many youths from neighboring districts for educational purposes. However, the youngsters are more focused on academic studies has led to a lack of non-academic physical activities, particularly in the forms of art, negatively impacting the youths' physical, social, and mental health.

Other connected problems Additionally, there are other connected problems arising from urbanization that are also impacting the youths' quality of life in Nugegoda.
