Dr. Bajaj believes
“The Fantastical Saga of Oklahoma City, Its Chaotic Founding, Its Apocalyptic Weather, Its Purloined Basketball Team, and the Dream of Becoming a World-class Metropolis.” When I first read the tagline to Sam Anderson’s bestselling book Boom Town, it resonated deeply. It has become one of my favorite books and an absolute must-read for any resident of the OKC metro.
The main concept that it captured was the spirit of Oklahoma City – in its past, in its present and certainly in its future. The people of this town have always, since day one of the land run, been dreamers. People who have the audacity to ask Russell Westbrook’s famous question: “Why Not?” I feel this question at my core and I see it in the eyes of our city’s leaders and residents. Why not me? Why not us? Why shouldn’t we have a professional NBA team? Why shouldn’t we be the best in the nation and probably win the championship next month? Why shouldn’t we have a brand new 400 million dollar resort? Why shouldn’t we host the Olympics? Why shouldn’t a small magazine team have 2.5 million pageviews on a local contest? Why shouldn’t my business become the best in town? What is stopping me? What is stopping us? The answer is nothing.
One of the lessons I continue to learn is that so often the difference between a hope and reality is the gumption to take action… to do. More so this month than any time since I have lived here over the past eight years, it feels like we have arrived. We are no longer dreaming of becoming a world class metro – we are one! Oklahoma City is bigtime.
The scope of the Best of the 405 contest is daunting and exhilarating. There are so many passionate, excellent and capable businesses and individuals in this town. So congratulations to all of the winners of their categories – what a huge feat! And praise to all of those who made the finals, were nominated and voted as well. It is because of you that we are finally here living the dream! Check out the full list of winners (pg 27)!
Also in this issue we are thrilled to highlight a brilliant chef who just so happens to be a Food Network champion and first time “Best of the 405” winner (pg. 14) as well as a custom cowboy boot maker (pg. 68).
Additionally, we are thrilled to introduce you to your next date night (pg. 60) and guys’ night out spots (pg. 62) and highlight a relaxing design spread (pg. 22).
I hope when you read this issue you feel the momentum in your life and in our city. What a fabulous time to be a 405 local!

Chef Kevin Lee has had a phenomenal year so far. Nominated for a James Beard Best Chef award, cultivating culinary excellence at Birdie’s Korean Steakhouse in Edmond, developing a new restaurant on 23rd and Walker in Oklahoma City and competing on two different shows on the Food Network — and for the first time ever winning Best of the 405 in the chef category (see pg. 32) — you could say he’s been busy.
Lee was born right here in Norman, but he moved all around the country in his youth and adolescence. “Yes, east coast, west coast and spent a large portion of my childhood in Korea, but I eventually wanted to move back to Oklahoma. I thought there would be more opportunities there,” he said.
In the past, he has competed on shows like “Beat Bobby Flay,” “Alex vs. America,” “Guy’s Grocery Games,” “Superchef Grudge Match” and
“Tournament of Champions,” making a name for himself in the culinary world as well as promoting his home state along the way. This March, he rejoined “Tournament of Champions” for season six, and this month, he will be representing Oklahoma again on a new Food Network show called “24 in 24,” in which 24 chefs compete for 24 consecutive hours with 24 rounds of competition.
“Guy’s Grocery Games” was the first show he competed in on the Food Network. He remembered, “It was terrifying. I was nervous about the camera, but now I don’t even notice it. I love the adrenaline rush from competing — it feels almost like a competitive sport. Competing on the shows helped me find mentors, chefs who gave me support and knowledge. It has been an incredible asset to me personally and to my career.”
Chef Lee is known for bringing these mentors and friends to visit Oklahoma. They often have collaboration events at his Edmond restaurant
Birdie’s, cooking and creating new menu items. Lee said, “These people are some of the best chefs in the nation. And I love showing off Oklahoma City.”
Birdie’s menu features short ribs, steak entrees and braised beef shank, easily relatable to an American palate. The offerings also include fresh raw crudo dishes and stone pot rice dishes, as well as house-made kimchi. Chef Lee is American, but the time spent in Korea in his childhood gives him a unique understanding of both cultures, and he is confident in blending the two cultures within the food he creates.
“One of the things I’m most proud of is that at Birdie’s, a Korean person can come eat at my restaurant, and a person who has never had Korean food can come eat at my restaurant — and those two very different people can enjoy the food. No matter where you’re from, people seem to understand and enjoy the food I try to cook.”
And while his media appearances have been tremendously beneficial, the grind never stops. “Being on TV doesn’t mean you are going to have a successful restaurant,” he said. “In some ways, you have to work even harder because the expectations are higher.”
Oklahoma is fortunate to have this hardworking and innovative chef here creating food. We’ll see you at Birdie’s.

While a monotone moment can never be passé, bringing in bold hues feels necessary as weather permits us to ditch our slacks for shorts and skirts and our bulky sweaters and raincoats for trendy tops and matching sets. Perhaps you experiment with the “Red Theory,” which surmises that adding red, whether it seems fitting or not, elevates a look instantly. A bowling shirt is a fun way to incorporate a retro aesthetic into your wardrobe, while a sensible slide can be your go-to in the summer months. Another concept to play with, two-toned jewelry makes mixing and matching your stack even easier with the ability to go gold, silver or both. (Plus, who doesn’t love the idea of a two-for-one?)
For May, don’t stray from the attention-grabbing and eye-catching. Instead, embrace it, make it your own — and show up and out in color!

May is National Physical Fitness Month and a perfect time to start exercising.
We spoke with primary care sports medicine physician Megan Meier of McBride Orthopedics about the amount and type of exercise we should all be getting. As the company physician for the Oklahoma City Ballet, known as “The Dancer Doctor,” Meier is an expert in keeping the body healthy no matter your age.
“Both cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise and strength/resistance training are important for health, and support our bodies in different ways,” Meier said. “Aerobic training supports the heart, brain and vessels, while strength training supports our muscles, bones and metabolic regulation. Combine both to get the most out of your workouts. I also recommend at least 10 to 20 minutes a day or one workout day a week specifically dedicated to dynamic stretching, like yoga, to maintain mobility along with strength.”
The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, and at least two days of moderate-to-high intensity muscle strengthening activities. With this in mind, Meier discussed exercise and specific goals for each decade of life.
20s Goal: Get moving. Many are physically active during their teens, but begin to wane as they enter the adult world. Meier recommended finding a fitness routine that is something you enjoy and easily accessible.
“The recommendations for strength training are two to three times a week for strength/weight management and only three to four times a week for muscle gain, with at least 48 hours between working the same large muscle group for proper recovery. I see this age group often go really high on protein and supplements, which can actually be harmful to organs and impair your training.”
30s Goal: Maintain activity. Bones begin to weaken after age 30, so it is crucial to incorporate regular exercise into your routine. As life gets
busier with career and family, Meier suggested that it may be easier to “break up exercise into smaller sessions daily or set aside one or two solid workouts a week to keep you consistent. Try interval training to make the most of your time.”
40-50s Goal: Maintain strength, support hormones and protect the heart. An aspect of aging is that our muscles begin to deteriorate faster, Meier said. “We lose 3-5% of our muscle mass per decade after age 40. It is imperative that you start or maintain a consistent strength training program to keep muscles from deteriorating.” It is also time to begin working on heart health by including regular cardiovascular training. For women, another bonus is that
exercise supports the hormonal/adrenal system, which may help with perimenopause symptoms. 60s + Goal: Protect bones, balance and the brain. Meier noted that after age 60, many people, especially women, struggle with bone density. “Strength training supports bones to lower the risk of fractures. Preserving muscle mass is still a priority.” Exercise also assists in maintaining a healthy neurological system, improving balance, decreasing falls and even delaying memory loss and improving cognitive function. “It is important to be consistent with exercise but also give our bodies grace to do what feels good. Lower impact exercise is still beneficial while being easier on the joints and lowering risk of falls.”
Get your body moving this summer with free exercise classes! As just a few of the metro’s options, OAK OKC has a yoga class every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. From April to October, Scissortail Park hosts yoga, Zumba, High Intensity Interval Training and a walking club weekly. Every Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m., Myriad Gardens holds a yoga class on the Devon Lawn.
“My feet feel like they’re on fire.”
“Each step feels like I’m walking through wet paint.”
“I live in constant fear that I’ll fall.”
“I can’t sleep, my hands and feet tingle all night.”
What do all of these people have in common? They suffer from peripheral neuropathy. It’s estimated that more than 20 million people in the United States have peripheral neuropathy. Unfortunately this figure may be signficantly higher as the disease is often misdiagnosed because of its wide array of symptoms.
Dr. Toni Twitty of Be Well Acupuncture in Edmond, OK shares this belief. “I’ve been treating neuropathy, in all its various forms, for over a decade and so often my patients come to me becuase of the symptoms not because of a diagnosis. They saw one of my television specials, or read a testimonial of another patient and say to themselves, ‘hey, I feel the same thing’.”
Betty M. of Oklahoma City testified to this, “I remember my husband driving me to my consultation and I saw a woman running just outside our neighborhood. I was so envious- I kept thinking, ‘I would give anything just to walk again’. My primary care doctor told me my troubles with pain and balance were just symptoms of old age and gave me a prescription. I was so depressed.”
Fortunately, Betty would eventually see a review of Dr. Toni talking about similar symptoms and how she offers a real solution at Be Well Acupuncture. “I just knew I had to see her. She was my last hope.”
“Almost all of our patients come to us with a story similar to Betty’s. They’ve been everywhere else. They’ve been told there is no hope. They’ve been told, ‘its just part of getting older,’” shares
Brooke, a Patient Care Technician at Be Well Acupuncture. “It just breaks my heart but I know that we can help people like Betty so I’m always so happy when they walk through our door.”
Those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy often face a grim reality; Western Medicine declares there is no solution while cost alternative therapies carry huge price tags and offer little to no resolve. Which is why Dr. Toni and the staff at Be Well pride themselves on being, ‘the last resort with the best results’.
Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves. This damage is commonly caused by low blood flow in the hands and feet. Low blood flow results in lack of nutrients; the nerves then begin to degenerate and die which causes pain ranging from discomfort to debilitating. Because neuropathy is a degenerative condition, once those nerves begin to deteriorate they will continue to do so until they completely expire, leaving those suffering with crippling balance issues. “In this case the absence of pain is not a good thing,” shares Dr. Toni. “This usually indicates that your nerves are hanging on by a fragile thread.”
So how exactly is Dr. Toni able to reverse the effects of this degenerative disease? “Acupuncture has been used to increase blood flow for thousands of years. It helps get the nutrients to the nerves. But the real magic happens when I integrate ATP Resonance BioTherapy™. This is tech that was orginally developed by NASA to expedite recovering and healing.”
“I just can’t say enough about Be Well,” Betty shared joyfully. “My husband and I moved here 3 years ago to be near our grandchildren. I always
stayed home because of the pain and discomfort. I couldn’t keep up. Yesterday I walked around the park with him! Next week we’re taking the grandkids with us! I am truly living life these days.”
According to Betty’s test results, she has seen a 74% improvement in pain and functionality, which is on par with a majority of our patients,” shares Paige. “But more important than those test results is the joy she’s expressed being here and hearing about all the amazing things she’s able to do because she feels great!”
By seamlessly blending the ancient science of acupuncture with modern medical solutions, Be Well Acupuncture has achieved a 90% success rate in reversing the effects of neuropathy. She starts each patient with an initial consultation during which a sensory exam is performed. “This not only aids in making a proper diagnosis but it helps to define just how much nerve damage has occurred,” tells the doctor. “This is important because if a patient has suffered more than 95% damage, there is little that I can do to help them. I’m familiar with the medical miracle but I know my limits as a practitioner and the limits of my medicine.”
When it somes to treating peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its origin, early detection greatly improves your chances of full recovery.
If you or someone you love are suffering with chronic pain that presents as burning, tingling, or ‘pins and needles’ or you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, it’s important to know that there are options. There is hope.

Four Elevations
The Muller family’s attic transformation has Meritage Park neighbors following suit
BY EVIE KLOPP HOLZER PHOTOS BY SARAH STRUNK
Within the tight-knit neighborhood of Meritage Park in Edmond, one family’s home renovation has inspired others. The Mullers’ amazing attic conversion, skillfully executed by 10 Key Remodels, has brought new life and additional space into their home. The neighbors have noticed, and some have begun attic renovations of their own.
“We absolutely love our neighborhood,” said Rebecca Muller. “It’s a very small neighborhood ... Our kids have grown up with the neighbors’ kids.”
Neighborhood couples and families often vacation together and also enjoy stopping by each other’s homes, so the renovated upstairs
makes the home ideal for gatherings. Muller cited a wintry snow-day scene as an example.
“We had three snow days in a row, and we invited all of the neighborhood kids over because more chaos is better sometimes. They can play among themselves. So all the parents were strewn around the first floor, working on laptops, and we had like 12 children upstairs, all watching TV, playing and just having so much fun,” she recalled.
When the Mullers first purchased their home in 2019, the expansive attic remained an untouched, barely accessible area—the dropdown ladder in the garage being the only entry point. However, with two children and a desire to stay in the neighborhood (they now have
family living in the neighborhood as well), the family saw potential where others might have seen only wasted space.
Working closely with Jessica Herndon, lead interior designer at 10 Key, Muller transformed the attic into a multifunctional living area that seamlessly blends with the home’s existing design. The project was driven by both emotional and practical reasons; financially, staying put made sense. They had purchased the home at a low pre-COVID price and could add significant value through the renovation.
Though construction projects are always loud, disruptive and messy, Herndon and Muller said the design process was pleasantly smooth. With her background in hospitality,
Muller came to planning meetings with a clear vision for the new layout, custom cabinetry and cozy amenities.
“Rebecca was definitely different from most of our clients in the sense that she came to me knowing exactly what she wanted,” said Herndon. “She was like, ‘This is what I like. Help me find exactly what I want.’”
Muller wanted the new space to feel like it had always been part of the home, not an obvious addition. To give it that “established” feel, Herndon worked diligently to match every detail—from trim and baseboards to door handles—with the home’s aesthetic.
The design style blends transitional elements with coastal and bohemian influences. Crisp white walls and silver finishes create a light, airy feel. Natural elements like white oak stairs and rattan light fixtures add warmth and texture.
Through diligent planning, the attic space now houses a playroom, bedroom, bathroom and a versatile kitchenette. A window seat with
built-in desks creates a perfect homework and reading nook for the children. Everything was strategically designed to grow with the Muller family over the years.
“We didn’t build it just for the 2- and 5-yearold we have now. We built it [to last] for 10 to 15 years from now,” Muller said.
A new staircase was added onto the dining room, connecting the two floors. The dining room also received special attention during the remodel, with the addition of a custom-built buffet to accommodate the family’s existing dining table.
The Mullers have created a beautiful, functional and inviting home, often overflowing with the friends and family they hold dear. And the best part? They made it all happen within their current home, within their beloved neighborhood.
Construction down the street shows the start of a neighborhood trend, as well.

INTRODUCTION This list is excerpted from the 2025 topDentists™ list, a database that includes listings for nearly 100 dentists and specialists in the Oklahoma City metro area. The list is based on hundreds of detailed evaluations of dental professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at www.usatopdentists.com. For more information call 706-364-0853; write P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903; or visit www.usatopdentists.com
SELECTION PROCESS (METHODOLOGY) "If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?"
This is the question we've asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and of course physical results.
The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with other dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer's work when evaluating the other nominees.
Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, status in various dental academies can play a factor in our decision.
Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.
Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in Oklahoma. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

AT REDEEMED SMILES, EXCEPTIONAL dental care is built on a foundation of clinical expertise, integrity, and patient-centered service. Led by Dr. John Fullington – a Navy-trained general dentist with advanced certifications and global experience – our practice is proud to offer comprehensive, highquality care in a welcoming and professional environment.
Patients often describe Dr. Fullington as highly skilled, knowledgeable, and downto-earth, with a calming presence that puts even the most anxious individuals at ease. His background includes service with the U.S. Navy and Marines in South Carolina, Japan, and Washington State, where he became the top-producing general dentist. He brings that same level of dedication and precision to every patient he treats in Oklahoma.
What sets Redeemed Smiles apart is our focus on advanced care, patient comfort, and consistent results. Dr. Fullington’s expertise encompasses advanced procedures, including full-mouth dental implants, All-On-4™ implant surgery, bone regeneration, digital dentistry, root canal therapy, and the latest advancements in prosthetic technology. With our in-house laboratory, we ensure consistent quality and efficient turnaround times for removables like dentures, some partials, night guards and retainers – setting us apart from other practices. We also offer many types of sedation and you can be asleep for your dental care, if you prefer.
In addition to advanced procedures, we proudly offer comprehensive family dentistry, from clear aligners to wisdom teeth extractions. Our practice is committed to continuity of care, ensuring each treatment
plan is tailored, predictable, and resultsdriven, so you can feel secure and confident in the treatment process.
Deeply engrained into the DNA of Redeemed Smiles is our Christian faith. Because of this, we believe that there is a valuable soul behind every smile; we are driven to do everything to excellence in order to serve them well.

IF A ROOT CANAL SOUNDS LIKE your worst nightmare, you don’t know Dr. Victoria Ball.
At Contemporary Endodontics of Oklahoma, Dr. Ball specializes in caring for the inside of the tooth when it becomes inflamed or infected. She diagnoses and treats complex causes of tooth pain caused by decay, cracks, fractures, inflammation or infection.
In the past, root canal procedures had become synonymous with pain and dread. But modern methods have made patient anguish over root canals a thing of the past.
“A lot of patients who need a root canal are in pain and fear seeking treatment,” says Dr. Victoria Ball, an Endodontist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cracked or fractured teeth, inflamed or infected nerves, abscess, initial root canal treatment as well as retreatments of failed prior root canals.
“Thanks to modern technology, a root canal procedure takes less time and has a higher success rate than ever before. The majority of patients leave feeling better than when they came in.”
Patients appreciate the attention they receive from Dr. Ball and her staff, especially since anxiety can be high when it comes to root canal procedures. “I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ball and her staff for my root canal,” said one patient. “They have a way of ensuring that you are comfortable, that everything is explained to you – and are very empathetic, which shows that they truly do care about you as a person, not just another patient. I highly recommend their practice.”
Finally, while she said the anatomy of each tooth presents a unique challenge as all teeth are different, Dr. Ball said her goal is singular: to provide the highest level of endodontic care and achieve the best results for her patients.
“Unfortunately, some teeth are past the point of saving, and in those situations,
we use 3-D imaging, microscope examination and experience to make the proper diagnosis,” she says. “That said, I believe that no tooth should ever be pulled if it can be saved! There’s nothing more satisfying to me than taking a patient’s pain away and helping them to save their natural teeth.”

The doctors and team members interact with patients’ and their families every day to help you love your smile.
“More importantly, we want you to love yourself and love others,” says Dr. John Archer.
Orthodontic Associates is a Diamond Plus Provider of Invisalign clear aligners and has treated more than 7,500 Invisalign patients, which is the most in the state of Oklahoma for a privately owned practice.
“This is the best orthodontic team around! They are always on time, efficient and very thorough,” said Skye, mom of two OA patients. “My son looks forward to these appointments instead of dreading them. We’re
on a braces journey, and I’m so thankful we’re taking it with Orthodontic Associates!”
Our team would love to show you how orthodontic treatment can be a benefit to your health and smile. We look forward to getting to know you and your family to serve you best!

IN 1988, WHEN DR. JAY HARLAN MOVED his family from San Antonio to Oklahoma City for his oral and maxillofacial surgery training, he had every intention of returning to his native Texas to establish his practice. But over that four-year period, his wife and he grew to love the state, the people, and Oklahoma became “home.”
Dr. Harlan has been honored to treat Oklahoma’s citizens ever since. “I’m now caring for three generations of families,” states Dr. Harlan. His most proud moment, however, was in 2019 when his son, Dr. James Harlan, DDS MD, completed his six-year residency in Louisville, Kentucky and joined his father to
form Harlan Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates. Together, they are the first father/ son oral surgery firm in the state and the only one in OKC.
In their newly remodeled office with stateof-the-art equipment, these ABOMS boardcertified surgeons see patients from all areas of Oklahoma requiring treatment for implant placement, tooth removal, bone grafting, facial reconstruction, facial trauma, and numerous forms of pathology. IV general anesthesia is available as both surgeons and their staff are fully certified. “With over 85 years of combined surgeon/assistant experience, we assure that patient safety and comfort are paramount,” adds Dr. James Harlan.
The practice is doctor-owned and operated, with all decisions made by the surgeons, not by DSO non-dentist investors. As such, they are able to prioritize their patients’ care, treat them with Christian values, and achieve exceptional results.
AURORA PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY, Drs. Lana and Adam Richardson treat patients from infancy through adolescence, including patients with special health care needs. They offer a wide variety of treatment options including minimally invasive treatment of cavities, sedation, and general anesthesia.
“We are passionate about prevention and education,” said Dr. Lana Richardson. “We hope to equip all of our patients and their families with the tools to maintain a healthy mouth for a lifetime.”
Both doctors are diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. They attended the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry and completed residency training in Columbus, Ohio at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Ohio State University.
“Aurora Pediatric Dentistry truly stands out for their attention to detail, personalized care, and genuine investment in their patients’ well-being,” said one patient. “We couldn’t be happier with their service and highly recommend them to any family looking for compassionate dental care.”

The mark of a savvy restaurateur is one who, even when conceptualizing something as ubiquitous as an Italian restaurant, can create something truly unparalleled. At Nichols Hills’ newly opened Elisabetta, the menu might traffic in familiar comforts, like pastas and pork chops, but familiarities end there.
The restaurant represents a swanky new chapter for 84 Hospitality, a brand built on pizza and burgers and ramen, and its founder and CEO Rachel Cope, who collaborated with Austin-based Excelsior Hospitality on the most decadent restaurant of her portfolio. Whereas previous concepts skewed casual, Elisabetta is decidedly ornate, from the walnut paneling and raw brass accents — implemented by Palm Springs-based architect Chris Pardo — to the globe-trotting wine list, handmade pastas and fresh seafood, flown in throughout the week.
“This place is the combination of travels, and looking at cuisines in Oklahoma City, and going ‘What do we not have?’” Cope explained. “There are some great Italian restaurants here, but we wanted to do it differently. Selfishly, I just wanted to eat handmade pasta in a moody, dark, vibe-y atmosphere, and that’s really how it all began.”
For Cope, the timing for Elisabetta — a nod to her middle name, Elizabeth —was as pivotal as the vibe. “Five years ago, I wouldn’t have been ready to do this,” said the prolific restaurateur, whose empire spans eateries in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Stillwater. “Empire turned 11 last year, and we’d been running so fast doing these fast-casual high-volume concepts. I just turned 40. I want to slow down and be more intentional.” After driving by what is now the Elisabetta space, transfixed by its exterior lampposts, she said something spoke to her about the location at 7300 N. Western, with its Nichols Hills locale, its parking capacity and its atmospheric potential.
The menu matches the moody aesthetic, too. Veering away from traditional Italian, Cope cited handmade pastas, like tagliolini enrobed in pork ragú or shrimp- and lobster-stuffed tortoloni with tarragon butter sauce, describing them as traditional in terms of how they’re made, but untraditional with accompanying ingredients. So too, a pork chop comes with a crispy panko and herb crust, and a texture akin to a pitchperfect schnitzel, while a verdant chopped salad — strewn with salami, Castelvetrano olives, crispy chickpeas and oregano vinaigrette — is a nod to a salad Nancy Silverton made on “Chef’s Table.”
Drinks are just as divergent. While other 84 Hospitality “hangouts” excel at beer and cocktails, Elisabetta distinguishes itself with its worldly wine list, the handiwork of partner Britton Stewart. Cocktails also shine, like a Rum Lemon-Berry Milk Punch and the Dirty Martini, made with Castelvetrano olives (and an optional caviar-stuffed olive).
For Cope, it all ties together as the vibe she was looking for — one culled from years of travel and inspiration. “The first thing people notice is how it feels,” she added. “Who wrote the rules that we have to do things that way? How do I want to eat? How do I want to be treated when I enter a restaurant? All of our experiences led us to putting together the best for us, and the best for guests and staff.”

Craft beer that earns the name at 405
BY MATT KIROUAC PHOTO BY RACHEL MAUCIERI
From tasting menus to tiered tea towers, culinary art is a well-trod medium, but in Norman, one brewery bills itself as “liquid art.” When Oklahoma laws changed in 2016, allowing breweries to sell product direct to customers, it christened a potable renaissance for a state still dusting off Prohibition-era regulations. Seemingly overnight, craft breweries began to boom, and in the upper echelon was 405 Brewing Co. in Norman.
Then and now, the brewery distinguished itself from anything else on the market — in terms of its singular beer styles, as well as the artistry that accompanied them. The creativity was evident both in the can, and on it. And it’s all a testament to co-founders Trae Carson and Jonathan Stapleton, two friends with a passion for craft beer and a penchant for ingenuity.
What started as a home-brew operation in 2008 evolved into a full-blown business, with a production facility — which remains today — established on the north side of town in 2015. From imperial stouts to live culture sours, the inaugural brews were big and bold, quickly marking 405 Brewing Co. as a destination for connoisseurs. Inspired by pioneering breweries like Schlafly in St. Louis and Jester King in
Austin, Carson recalled an early love for wild fermentation, and an interest in debunking the rules.
One such imperial stout, FDR, is a signature beer that sums up that philosophy. An acronym for “F*** the Damn Rules,” it stems from the brewery’s origins, when Carson and Stapleton were entering beers into competition.
“Feedback we might hear when we were talking to other brewers about how we’re making beer, they were like ‘That’s not how you make this, according to this guideline,’” Carson said. “For us, it doesn’t have to be a style or a guideline. If your palate likes it, your palate likes it.”
Art has never been one for guidelines, so they leaned into the “liquid art” of it all, crafting beers with unexpected flavors and techniques, packaged in colorful cans that are just as illustrious. Over the past decade, customer preferences directed 405 Brewing Co.’s focus to lagers, IPAs, fruited sours and imperial stouts, but the artistry never faltered.
“We’re still remaining unique and passionate about all of our products, making them different, whether it’s through an infusion process or a technique,” Carson explained. That passion has begotten standouts like the
Trae P.A., their enduringly popular IPA, barrelaged stouts like Freelance Whale and a fastgrowing series of live culture sours called Magic Whip, available in flavors like pineapple and pomegranate and made from 100% pure juice, inspired by Dole Whip at Disney World.
The latest evolution finds a new 405 Brewing Co. taproom in a historic building on Main Street in Norman. Now, customers can drink in a comfy space bedecked with Nintendo games and, aptly, art. The taproom features new beer releases every Thursday, presided over by Carson himself, while the downtown location — coupled with other nearby breweries, like BIG Brewing Co. — has turned Main Street into a craft brewery destination. From home brews to Main Street, it’s the latest evolution for a proven pioneer, and a brand that eschews guidelines for liquid art. → For more information visit 405brewing.com

Canterbury Voices prepares to Crescendo!
BY LAVINIA CRESWA PHOTOS PROVIDED
As far as history records, choral music dates back to ancient Greece during the 2nd century BC, when a choir performed in unison during theatrical and religious performances. Since then, choral music has become a part of a world-wide culture, with many experiencing their first taste of singing in an elementary school chorus. But graduation does not have to signal the end of choral singing. There are an estimated 270,000 choirs across the United States and one of them — Canterbury Voices — has called Oklahoma City its home for over 55 years.
Canterbury Voices is Oklahoma’s oldest and largest community choir with roughly 165 singers. Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Julie Yu, these vocalists rehearse weekly for their four brilliant concerts a year, as well as occasional performances with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. Dr. Yu is currently completing her second season with Canterbury, bringing new and exciting works to the stage including Loksi’ Shaali’ by Jerod Tate earlier this season. This groundbreaking opera is the first ever written entirely in a Native American language (Chickasaw), which engaged and challenged both the singers and audience. Yu said, “The performing arts in Oklahoma City
are experiencing a remarkable renaissance, with vibrant collaborations, dynamic performances and a growing appreciation for the power of live music. It is an exciting time to be part of the arts community, where creativity and passion continue to inspire and connect us all.”
Still to come this season is Crescendo! taking place in the Civic Center’s Hall of Mirrors the evening of Thursday, May 15. This gala will feature the Chamber Voices, a small group of Canterbury’s finest vocalists. A live jazz combo will play during cocktail hour, which begins at 6:30 p.m., and at 7:30 p.m. a 45-minute virtuosic concert will begin. “It is an acoustically beautiful space and the Chamber Voices will perform an eclectic mix of music,” said marketing director Kelly Moore. “Guests can expect everything from classical music to Imogen Heap to Paul Simon. There will be cocktails and delicious appetizers catered by Kam’s Kookery. It is a more intimate setting with a fun, party atmosphere.”
Crescendo! is Canterbury’s biggest fundraiser of the year, with the proceeds benefiting its youth education program called Canterbury Youth Voices. This is a weekly choral program for children in grades two through 12 that runs throughout the school year, serving as an enhanced extracurricular activity. The
money raised at Crescendo! will go toward the scholarships available for these young singers. Tickets are now on sale for the 2025-26 season, which is sure to be another stellar year for Canterbury Voices. It begins with "Dies Irae:" Songs of the Shadows on Oct. 30 with spooky melodies including Carl Orff’s famous "O Fortuna" and haunting sounds of "Dies Irae" and Sweeney Todd. Next is the classic holiday favorite Handel’s Messiah on Dec. 7, which Canterbury performs every other year to a sold-out crowd.
In the spring, experience the magic of the Great White Way on March 21 with Canterbury Voices on Broadway! The season will close once again with the Crescendo! fundraiser next May.
“The OKC arts community is thriving, and in times of uncertainty, music and the arts serve as a source of hope, unity and resilience, reminding us of our shared humanity,” Yu said. “I am truly excited for the future we are building together. Our next season has something for everyone — classic favorites, sweeping melodies and inspiring choruses.”

A conversation on bootmaking with the talented Lisa Sorrell
BY EVIE KLOPP HOLZER PHOTOS BY CHARLIE NEUENSCHWANDER
Lisa Sorrell calls bootmaking the “perfect marriage of art and craft.” Her handstitched creations are displayed in the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s “Cowboy Boots: From Roundups to Runways” exhibit (closing May 4). Currently she is busy curating another exhibit for The Birthplace of Country Music Museum, located in Bristol, Virginia, that’s opening in October. This opportunity is especially appropriate and exciting for Sorrell, a life-long music lover who names all of her boots after classic country, bluegrass and gospel songs.
Working in her Guthrie shop, Sorrell runs two businesses: Sorrell Custom Boots and Sorrell Notions and Findings, in which she sells leather tools and supplies. We recently asked Sorrell to share more about her distinctive art and craft.
How did you first become interested in bootmaking?
I got into bootmaking by answering an ad in the paper looking for someone to stitch boot tops. I had no idea what that meant, and I’d never worn cowboy boots, but I could sew … My mom started teaching me to sew at age 12, and by 14, she was coming to me for sewing tips, and by 15, I was sewing professionally for ladies in my church. So I called [about the ad], and the old man cussed at me and told me that sewing leather was nothing like sewing fabric. And he was correct, but he hired me anyway, and that’s how it started.
Tell me about your process crafting custom boots.
It starts with the customer coming in and sitting down; I measure their feet, and I talk to
them about their fitting expectations. Then we choose their leather colors and their design, and then they wait — because my waiting time is around 18 months to two years.
What makes it all worth the wait?
The goal is to get you a pair of boots that fits you well. And the second [goal], of course, is personalization. You can do purple flowers and yellow butterflies if you want; whatever makes you happy … There’s an emotional connection to cowboy boots that I don’t see in other types of footwear. When I did shows, people would come up to me and say, “I have a pair of boots that belonged to my grandpa,” and here’s what they look like, and here are stories of what he did in them. I don’t hear stories like that about athletic shoes.
Do you wear cowboy boots now?
I wear cowboy boots every day, although recently, I started playing with shoes which are patterned completely differently than cowboy boots. It has been so hard for me to learn shoe patterning; I think that’s why I’m enjoying it … What I’m doing is I’m making shoes, and then I’m putting them on a cowboy boot last (a footshaped mold) and so they fit and feel like a cowboy boot, but they look like a shoe — and they’re super fun.
Do you have a favorite pair that stands out?
It’s so nerdy, but yes: I was raised in a very conservative little church, and we only had like four or five gospel albums, but they were country … My favorite band is a brother duo called The Louvin Brothers, and their most iconic gospel album is called Satan is Real. It does not glorify Satan, I promise — but anyway, I love this album, and it has this fantastic cover art. One time I got to meet a young man named Taylor Malpass. He’s part of a modern-day brother duo called The Malpass Brothers … Taylor asked me to make him a pair of “Satan is Real” boots. Those will forever be my favorite boots.

Miami’s exquisitely opulent Coleman Theatre
BY LINDA MILLER PHOTO COURTESY OF OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Even before walking inside, the historic Coleman Theatre on Miami’s Main Street impresses with its Spanish Mission Revival architecture and high-arching gable topped with three elaborate finials. The interior is equally grand with elaborate furnishings and details.
Opened in 1929, the northeastern Oklahoma theater quickly became a popular destination for locals and travelers from Oklahoma City and beyond who had heard about the beautiful venue that featured vaudeville shows and movies.
Visitors were also treated to live music by a 10-person orchestra and delightful sounds from a vintage pipe organ known as the Mighty Wurlitzer. The organ cost $35,000 in 1929 and is reportedly the only Wurlitzer organ built in 1928 still in its original home.
The Coleman Theatre was conceived and funded by George L. Coleman Sr., a local lead and zinc mining tycoon. He and his wife enjoyed many types of entertainment, but the town’s existing theater was too small for some traveling shows. The answer was a new, larger theater. Originally called the Coleman Theatre Beautiful, it was constructed in 330 days at a cost of $600,000. It opened on April 18, 1929, with all 1,600 seats sold at $1 per person for a vaudeville show and movie named The Dummy
Luxury and beauty were on display at every turn with Louis XV-style accent pieces, Belgian velvet curtains, gold leaf accents, stained glass panels, a mahogany staircase leading to the balcony, columns with intricately carved details, a breathtaking chandelier and faux-box seats that hid organ pipes. Coleman’s family crest, a pick and shovel, was woven into the theater’s original carpet.
All was good for years, but after Coleman’s death in 1945, his wife sold the theater to a movie company. Movies became the primary entertainment. Even the treasured pipe organ was sold.
But the theater’s worst days were ahead. Efforts to modernize took away what made it special. In the ensuing years, age, deterioration and lack of maintenance left it with mold, holes in walls and ceilings and water leaks. The grand 2,000-pound chandelier broke into pieces.
Then came the light. In 1989, the movie company returned the neglected theater to the Coleman family, who donated the venue, soon to be a showpiece once again, to the city of Miami. Restoration began almost immediately. All work was done by volunteers who donated more than 10,000 hours. School-age children collected aluminum cans to help fund restoration of the stained-glass light covers in the auditorium.
The city provided furnishings and $50,000 yearly toward restoration. The chandelier frame was found in a barn and reconstructed; it hangs once again in the domed auditorium. The organ also was located, purchased, repaired and reinstalled in 1996. It is still played during silent film screenings.
Restoration has been done with attention to every detail while keeping or replicating the original. The damask silk tapestries that hung on the lobby walls were reproduced, and the
velvet curtain was repaired. The original carved mahogany staircase with decorative moldings and railings still greets visitors as they enter. New carpet and seats match the originals. And the ballroom that had never been finished was finally completed.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this is where Tom Mix rode his horse on stage and Will Rogers, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, fan dancer Sally Rand, Cary Grant and other big names entertained.
Today, with regularly scheduled entertainers and touring acts, the theater is also popular for wedding and anniversary celebrations, and special events. Tours are available, too.
Since the beginning, through renovations and the popularity of drive-in-movies and multiplex theaters, the Coleman Theatre on historic Route 66 has never gone dark.
Faith, work and the power of showing up
BY JAKE DURHAM PHOTOS PROVIDED
Jana Gridley, like many working women, was trying to juggle family, faith and professional life. She searched for community, posting to social media and looking for a local women’s Christian group, but one did not seem to exist.
“I’d been doing all the networking things,” she said. “Mom groups, women’s events, church volunteering—but nothing tied it all together. I wanted one place where I didn’t have to explain who I was or why I worked. A space where faith and career could coexist.”
That search led Gridley and co-founder Dr. Jessica Rimmer to Polished—an organization founded in Dallas to support women navigating life, work and faith. Its chapter-based model offered connection, mentorship and purposedriven programming that felt like the perfect fit. By launching the Oklahoma City chapter, Gridley and Rimmer became the first to bring Polished beyond Texas. What began as a luncheon with 45 friends and contacts has evolved into monthly gatherings of over 100 women. Some events—like a recent one featuring OU softball coach Patty Gasso—have drawn crowds of more than 200. Its rapid growth reflects the need for a space where women feel seen, supported and connected.
Every monthly event features a speaker who shares their story of their upbringing and their current work, and how their Christian
faith plays a crucial role. Gridley often conducts the interviews herself, setting the tone with a talk-show-style Q&A that invites authenticity. Themed discussions follow at each table, allowing attendees to reflect and apply those stories to their work and lives.
“We’re straightforward that this is a Christian-centered space,” Gridley said. “However, anyone is welcome, regardless of their beliefs. We’re here to encourage women wherever they are. Polished is a place where diversity is celebrated, and everyone is respected and welcomed.”
Monthly themes are integrated into the speaker stories and tabletop discussions. February, for example, focused on “love”— exploring how to lead, serve and show compassion in the workplace and to others, even when it’s difficult.
For many, Polished fills a gap that traditional church programs often miss. “When you’re a working mom or a single professional, it’s easy to fall through the cracks,” Gridley explained. “Sometimes, the only way to serve in a church setting is in the nursery or other areas that may not utilize your talents, and due to a work-life balance, it may be all you can do. But we have more to give. Polished enables us to utilize our professional skills to build community, support one another and serve in numerous ways.”
The group’s core message is that work is good—meaningful, created with purpose and a way to serve others. Conversations at Polished extend beyond spiritual encouragement, exploring topics such as mental health, leadership, identity and loneliness. It’s a space where women grow personally and professionally, feeling empowered and inspired along the way.
“Five years after the pandemic, many are still isolated and lonely,” Gridley said. “Even now, we meet women who are struggling—still in need of connection, encouragement and a space that supports their mental health.”
Earlier this year, Polished merged with 4word Women, a global organization with a similar mission but a broader reach. With expanded resources—such as executive groups, employee programs and structured mentoring— the partnership enables Gridley, Rimmer and their team to offer even more to women in Oklahoma City without compromising the grassroots feel that makes Polished so meaningful.
“I think about what it would’ve been like if this hadn’t worked out,” Gridley said. “There would be a real lack of community that so many have needed.”
