Slevin. How did you come up with the name? What does it mean and why did you think it would be a perfect name for your magazine?

Well, It’s been a long time I have had that name in my mind, to be honest… I even named my laptop Slevin a year ago. Haha. Ridiculous right? I never thought I would name this magazine Slevin. I was thinking about naming it Bjørn or Lyan. But those names didn’t seem right. Then Slevin came to my mind again and I had a good feeling about it. So, I looked up the meaning behind the word and I found out that Slevin means a mountain. I have always believed that if I dream of a mountain it’s a good sign. Also, the word Slevin itself has number 5 as its soul urge number; it means a deep desire for travel and adventure. And its expression number is 9; it means passionate, compassionate, intuitive, romantic and having magnetic personalities.

So, I think it is a perfect name for this magazine as it´s a prayer.

I imagine a lot of time and energy went into making of the first issue. How did you do it? What was your motivation?

With both my full-time and my part-time job, plus social life, I only had a little time to work on the magazine. I worked on it during the weekend and sometimes a few hours before I went to bed. I fell asleep with my laptop by my side quite often!

Too bad… haha. When I was working on the first issue, I tried to work on a few things every day, step by step. From thinking about the concept, to preparing the contents, approaching the artists, observing, designing the layouts, building the website, arranging the social media channels and then finally publishing it.

It’s always been one of my dreams to create something that reflects my craziness - I change my mind way too often and I always must release all the creative ideas buzzing in my head. It is also a good way to get out of the monotony of the 9 to 5 work life, that can be quite depressing. My dreams motivate me to keep moving forward and the support from a lot of artist is very precious to me too.

You are very good at promoting the magazine on social media. What would be your advice for artists who are a bit social-media-shy?

What? Really? Man, I don’t even think about that. I just love creating playful content with a cool/funny/catchy caption. I think of it as a friend to friend conversation. And I am also very concerned about the aesthetics of every post. If I don’t have good content, I won’t post anything.

My advice is: don’t be afraid to express your thoughts, share your art or anything really, as long as it contains a positive message or might have a positive impact on someone else or if it’s just generally for the better good, why don’t you post/ share it? With the power of social media, you’ll always be surprised by what’s out there. Also, never ever underestimate yourself by comparing your work with the work of others.We are all different creatures, different characters. We are all unique.

Keep observing too! It will help you to get inspired.

This question is actually linked to the previous one. When it comes to promotion, you - as a lot of other artists nowadays rely on social media. What is the best way, you think, to promote your art and reach more people? Apart from having your stuff included in Slevin, of course :) I think the best way to promote your art on socials is by being yourself and being confident when it comes to the content you post. Think carefully about arranging all the posts, especially on Instagram. Always imagine how it will look like after it’s posted (in order to create a good layout view).

Also, try to write a good caption to give the viewer an idea of the story behind the content and post often to keep your socials alive.

How did you choose the people involved in the first issue of Slevin and why them?

For the first issue of Slevin, I was thinking a lot about some artists that I had met. I was mostly thinking about the uniqueness of each artists and each work, trying to find the line between the creations and then combining them with the concept of Slevin. To be honest, it was a tough job man! In order to select the artworks that would fit into the concept of Slevin, I had to dive deep into each work and think a lot about its meaning.

Now let’s get a bit more personal. Are you an artist yourself? Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your art?

Yea, I consider myself an artist, but I am still learning and I want to keep improving in what I do.

Hmm.. I think I am just a random creative person.

I change my mind too often and too quickly. I am a workaholic! I love learning new things and I also love desserts, smart jokes and sarcasm. I also like spending some quality time with my dad, my good friends or just being with any humble people out there.

About my art, most of my works are digital collages, drawings and some film photography too. Long time ago, I was really into street art (stencil art) but then I stopped as I ain’t got no time to for the whole process (designing, printing, cutting, spraying, and wheat-pasting on the street)!

We met in London last year and I know you loved your London trip. Can you tell us what’s your favorite thing about London and what’s your favorite thing about Bali? Would you ever move to London if you had the chance?

London has opened my eyes and my mind in so many good ways. My favorite thing about London is that it is a fast-paced environment, where I can think fast too. Also, it’s quite easy to learn anything in London, for example if I want to learn life drawing, I can just join a class. And my favorite things about Bali are the sunsets, the beaches (as I love to walk on the beach and feel the sand between my toes) and easy lifestyle allowing people to really enjoy life.

I would love to move to London, but only temporarily as I still want to spend quality time with my dad in my village in Bali. And I want to travel more and experience the life in other big cities like New York and Berlin and see what the world can offer to me.

Would you rather travel back in time or forward (into the future)? Why? I think I would prefer to travel back in time, to fix all the mistakes I did in my past life, to see the people who were in my previous life and to see how the pyramids and all the magnificent temples and castles were built. I think that would be interesting.

I don’t worry too much about the future. I focus on my present life and I do my best to live the life in the present moment. That is very important to me.

I know it will have an impact on my future too.

What are your expectation for Slevin?

What’s the future of your magazine? What would you like to achieve?

I hope Slevin can be a quality and helpful media supporting artists, designers, writers or any other creative people out there! The future of Slevin is to be a well-known creative platform that can support young creative people. I know it won’t be easy and it will take time, but I will do it and I believe I can achieve it. I would like to have a creative team working with me on Slevin and I would love to get some sponsors, so I that I can keep it free. I really don’t want to charge the people who want to submit their work. Then I would like to turn it into a big media company, that could be a home for artists and creative people from all over the world.

If you could be reborn as someone else (e.g. a movie star, a writer, a musician, an artist etc.), who would you be? Whose life would you like to re-live?

Can I request to be taller too? Haha! If I could be reborn, I would like to be eithe Audrey Hepburn or Young Eddie Vedder! I think he’s cool.

By expressing her artistic soul, she has transformed a variation of objects into a beautiful artworks with spirit and bold character.

How long you have been doing art?

I’ve been sketching since I was a kid but I started painting about 6 years ago.

How would you describe your art style in one word?

Abstract How would you describe your art style in five words? :D Eccentric,Vibrant, Rich, Penetrating, Stimulating Have you ever considered if you are not making art, what would you do?

I never consider not making art. It’s embedded in me. I live for art. I breathe art. But I will say this, to have an art café and use it as a platform for other artists is a big dream of mine.

Why did you choose mannequins as the main objects for your art?

Female Mannequins are vibrant and powerful. And to collaborate mannequins with abstract is my way of empowering women. It’s bold, strong, beautiful and absolutely stimulating.

Could you explain about the idea behind of your sculpture art with the mannequin?

I love to paint women and I remember walking into a clothing store and seeing this beautiful mannequin. She was so powerful and tall and all I could think is how much more it would be with vibrant colors all over her. And how I could use that to create my female artistry but in a more life size realistic way and can truly express how I feel about women and just how powerful we are.

Who has inspired you to be an artist?

Art runs in my family. My dad is a collector, my brother is a sculptor. I have Aunts and cousins that paint as well so inspiration has been all around me since I was a child.

What is your favorite movie from Disney?

Ohh that’s a tough one! I’m torn between Lady and The Tramp and 101 Dalmatians.

What you desire when people look at your art?

When people look at my art, instead of focusing solely on what my vision is, I want them to tell me what they see and how it moves them. I want them to form their own vision. Create their own world in my painting.

Do you still remember the first art that you had made long time ago? When you were kid/teenager or the first moment when you fell in love with art?

I don’t remember in details but I do remember sketching people a lot. I do remember a portrait I made of an old man. I remember being so proud of it that I swore I would never stop sketching old people LOL. Any upcoming exhibitions? Or where we can see your art?

Upcoming exhibition will be in Haiti at Rivoli November 15th 2018.

Giulia Pierobon, a talented Italian-born artist, spends her free time drawing digital illustrations. The medium of digital art is perfect for her as it allows her to go back to the drawing to do some changes and work on some details a bit more.

This helps her with her feelings of insecurity that come with a work in progress. Since she left the ‘Spaghetti country’ four years ago and moved to London, she’s been pursuing her passion in art. Her main source of inspiration is the everyday reality of her life. What she enjoys the most is drawing interesting looking strangers she meets on the streets of London.

DEBORA W. [ DJ DBRA ] DJ/Producer/Analog Photographer What inspires you to shoot lomography?

I love art, any kind of art, and photography is one of the arts that I’ve always wanted to try coz I love composition, colors, and it brings feelings. Honestly at first I was only interested with the design of the camera itself, it looks like toys and has exciting colors, some has cool metal and leather on it. But then I saw the pics that came out of it, and that’s it, I knew that this is my kind of camera, it’s unique, it’s different.

Why did you choose lomography?

I like the vibrant colors and the dreamy feeling it creates. The fact that it still uses roll films is so exciting, you never know what you gonna get, sometimes the pictures could turn out just ok, but sometimes absolutely unique that a digital camera cannot do. Also, I don’t really like to be bothered with buttons when I take pics, I don’t wanna be busy with the settings, I just like to capture moments and play with angles and natural lighting.

When the pictures come out, it is what it is, no edits, no filters, that’s why when you get a nice picture it’s completely satisfying.

What moves you to shoot some objects?

I think I like playing with colors and angles.

The object can be anything but, if it has an interesting color I would like to capture it because lomography can make colors stand out.

Let’s talk about music, how long you have been DJing?

Hmm, maybe for about 4-5 years, since I quit my job as an architect, haha. But it has always been my first love.

I have been watching your performance so many times and listening to your songs. What’s your concern in selecting music?

I love beats, probably the first thing that catches my ears when I hear a song. Then I wait for the melody, melodies gives me the mood, happy, mellow, sad, whatever it is. It feels nice to listen to song that suits your mood.

Could you tell me about your new music?

Well, I love playing instruments, and music is my way to show feelings, so I think making music is the perfect way for me to speak my mind, get it out what’s in my head. Most of the times my brain just has melodies in it, when I go to sleep, when I wake up, there’s just melodies hanging around, so to put them together in a composition is almost like meditating for me, I find it relieving because that’s when I release my emotions.

I’m not only talking about making music but also djing, but when I make my own music, produce, it’s a totally different level of satisfaction. I feel so excited when my melodies and beats started to come together, it’s so addictive that I couldn’t stop until it’s finished. Then I get to play the songs when I’m djing, that’s priceless, to see people enjoying your own music.

Would you like to release an album for your music in the future?

Of course, that’s what every musician wants, isn’t it?
