SIERRA LEONE MEDICAL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION

(SLEMSA)

MOTIVATIONAL LETTER Dear friends, colleagues and members of the SLEMSA family, In a time when disinformation and manipulation in the media take place all over the globe, we have to make sure that we have a say on all matters that affect us as medical students. We have to ensure that the joint voices of medical students get out louder and clearer, more than ever. Public relations and communication are all about that.

My name is Idrissa Conteh, a fourth year medical student. I am a fully paid up and active member for the past five years. I joined medical school in 2015 and I was inspired to be part of SLEMSA

when a senior colleague approached me asking for me to vote for him. I was fortunate to have a dialogue with him and I came to realize that this is one of the best association I should be part of.

As important as the association is, its membership need to know more about it not only during elections but from the starting of their journey in medical school. Since then, I developed the ambition of becoming the public relations officer in order to emancipate the act of members knowing about the association only during elections. My journey to this stage so far has been full of inspirations, motivations and Ambitions. I must admit in my five years of this journey, I have had the opportunity to meet and interact with different medical students irrespective of our level of education.

From my Early childhood, I have always crave for the opportunity to contribute to the health sector in my country and one way of achieving that is to work with fellow medical students which will enable us to practice team work in the health sector that is currently lacking.

Having served as director of planning in 2019 SLEMSA medfest and director of protocols in 2019 SLEMSA NGA, I am eager to take on a bigger and a new challenge. This will enable me to contribute to the growth of SLEMSA and its membership as public relations is key for the growth and development of any association.

My excellence communication skills and having the ability to balance my academics with extracurricular activities have inspired me to go for the position of public relations officer. I have more than three years of experience in public relations within COMAHS and I would like to use those experiences to serve SLEMSIANS. Permit me to conclude by quoting Bill Gates “If I was down to my last dollar, I would spend it on public relations.”

PLAN OF ACTION This plan of action is based on reviewing tasks of public relations officer in the SLEMSA constitution and also the activities of the past public relations officers.

PLAN OF ACTION 1. WEBSITE AND ONLINE PLATFORMS SLEMSA has a website and a lot of social media accounts and most of them have continuous growth since their establishment. However there is a need to upgrade and extend our handles to the like of YouTube. The number of likes and followers of our social media handles are very impressive. Though much need to be done.

ACTION 









I will update the information in the website regularly as it will be the main platform that our partners and members have access to and to evaluate our activities.

Create a drive for all our activities of which the links to those materials will be made available to the membership.

Analyze the performance of different types of posts on SLEMSA’S Facebook page and other social media handles Planning of social media tracking calendar to organize posts and prepare public relation materials in an efficient way.

Create interactive social media activities to increase the engagement of users.

PLAN OF ACTION 2. HOUSE MEETINGS The General House should composed of all the members of SLEMSA. The attendance of members in such important meeting has been very low .I would like to increase the level of publicity for all house meetings in order to ensure that the attendance to this meetings is not only maintain but also increased.

ACTION  

I will publish a summary of the importance of the house meeting. i.e the need to attend such meetings.

Regularly update our social media handles and collaborate with class ambassadors to create broadcast list so as to create awareness and increase participation of the entire membership.

3. PUBLICATIONS This is very essential for SLEMSIANS as it will help to reach members, partners and Alumni.

ACTION   

To improve the standard of the SLEMSA newsletter so as to attract more external audience To encourage more SLEMSIANS to engage in more publications to be featured in the IFMSA Promote articles and publications of members.

PLAN OF ACTION 4. EXTERNAL RELATIONS There is a need for the establishment of relations with other student bodies within and outside the University, international relations with other NMO’s within IFMSA.
