Welcome The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust has a singular mission – “Helping the under privileged children of Barbados” by whatever means necessary. Whether that be with health, education, community programmes or alleviation of poverty.

Our mission is simply to protect and assist those who are too young to help themselves.

To this end, tonight’s event is a joining of like-minded individuals, a celebration of the work of The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust and its collaboration with generous sponsors and donors. It is our opportunity to explain how last year’s generous donations were carefully spent, but also to raise the much needed funds for next year’s endeavours for these needy children.

So whilst you are enjoying the glorious surroundings of this beautiful island of Barbados, please do spare a thought and a donation for those children less fortunate than ourselves. Take the time to visit our silent auction, which has some amazing prizes this year - interesting, unique and, despite the rumours, definitely some “bargains” to be had.

If there really is nothing there that takes your fancy, then please remember every donation, no matter how small, will be graciously received and can truly help change a life!

The Trust and its work would not be possible without the generous support of local and overseas donors - the team sponsors who compete for the coveted golf prizes, the local companies who donate items for both our live and silent auction and the individuals who generously donate large sums of money, safe in the knowledge that their funds will be put to good use. All of this support, in whatever form, is always encouraging and is truly appreciated.

The Trust continues to run with no expenses or salaries and therefore every dollar donated goes towards providing for children in need in Barbados.

The Sunshine Early Stimulation Centre & John Payne School for Exceptional Children Love. Passion. Commitment. These three words express the over-arching philosophy of the Sunshine Early Stimulation Centre and The John Payne School for Exceptional Children.

Where every child is met with a warm smile, a caring attitude and a firm belief that each child can succeed if given an opportunity.

We pride ourselves in staying current in the educational field so that we can provide a top-quality service to our children. At the Centre, we provide a full individualized educational plan that encompasses the social and emotional well-being of children with developmental disabilities and for those who are on the spectrum.

Through the D.I.R./Floortime Model, we can assess, design and implement a full range of activities that successfully support all areas of our children’s development. The Centre’s staff have knowledge in each capacity to properly execute an amazing learning experience for every child, whether it be supporting communication, social and emotional development, sensory integration, physical and cognitive development.

The Centre’s wholesome programme exposes our children to gymnastics, occupational therapy, creative arts therapy and swimming. In this way, we cultivate confidence, strength and an internal discipline in our children so that they can meet the demands of the world successfully.

Our Centre holds families together. We see the dire and desperate need for parents to have a place where they can express their fears, desires and expectations about their child’s future in a non-judgemental environment. By providing empowering parent workshops, home-based visits, mum and dad support groups and arranging play dates, the Centre has become a haven for families to unite and partner in advocating for their children. We celebrate potential and ignite hope with the family support offered at the Centre.

This year, the Centre hosted a phenomenal workshop with ‘The Achievement Learning Centre’ of Dominica and ‘My Child and I Charity’ at The Derrick Smith School and Vocational Centre. Eight full days of training in Barbados for the special education teachers from the Achievement Learning Centre as well as for special education and mainstream teachers from various schools in Barbados.

The need to access the Centre’s training was truly astounding as many teachers swarmed to receive training in the following areas: sensory processing and integration, movement-based learning activities, communication strategies in the classroom, student transitions, D.I.R./Floortime strategies, supporting difficult behaviours, differentiated teaching, classroom set-up and environment and lastly how to support children with Visual-Spatial Processing challenges.

However, this training would not have been possible without the generous support of The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust whose continuous donations ensure that the running costs of the school are met, and the facility can continue to flourish. With our support, every child that steps through the Centre is given an opportunity to excel beyond their diagnosis and every parent is emotionally encouraged.

We specifically want to thank the members of The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust who have been with the Centre from inception, they continue to play a pivotal role through their continuous financial support and personal involvement of the Centre. We thank you!

Educational Initiatives RESPONDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE NATION’S CHILDREN THROUGH EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES The Trust recognises some of the monumental challenges facing Barbadian educators. Funds were directed to supporting change through the sponsorship of numerous schools, charities and not for profit organizations positively affecting the lives of thousands of children in our schools. In coordination with the Ministry of Education, the Trust supports counselling, teacher training, student intervention and innovative academic programmes.

Supporting the following programmes is our way of addressing the challenges that the nation’s children face. We work to encourage better life choices, empowering children to value and accomplish their academic potential.

PRIMARY SCHOOL COUNSELLING • Counsellors working at 24 High Risk Primary Schools and New Horizons Academy.

• 6 fulltime counsellors conducted over 1500 individual counselling sessions.

• Provided counselling for over 1804 students.

• Conducted 148 Parent Consultations and 240 group sessions.

• Some of the current issues that counsellors found to be impacting the lives of our children include, parental separation, loss of loved ones, financial difficulties, sexual, physical and emotional abuse, community violence, absence of parents and social issues.

• Workshops paved the way for intervention and a positive alternative, with themes such as selfesteem, coping, grief therapy, problem solving, anger management and behaviour modification.

THE CARIBBEAN DYSLEXIA CENTRE

• A curriculum that will steer these boys back into a positive educational course and aim for NVQ qualifications rather than the traditional academic CXC examinations.

• Learning disabilities are often hidden, they are disabilities nonetheless.

ACHIEVE YOUTH FOUNDATION

• Few schools in the government system have trained teachers to support this common childhood condition. So children are left to fall between the cracks.

• A community non-profit organisation, in community based education, established in 2014.

• 9 Scholarships to children of need ages 8-16, which provide general funding for the facility.

• SLCT supports thirty (30) Scholarships with the aim of improving grades.

• Providing specialized access to learning, assisting these students overcome their learning challenges.

• Assisting less fortunate students in The Achieve Model for Educational Success (AMES).

World Pediatric Project Orthopedic Missions CELEBRATING 106 SUCCESSFUL SURGERIES

It is not every day you can celebrate a century.

However, in July 2019, the SLCT and our counterparts i.e. QEH and the WPP reached a milestone and celebrated an astounding 106 successful orthopedic surgeries. Children suffering with Scoliosis, Blounts and General Orthopedic

ailments were all treated locally in Barbados or St. Vincent and for the more technical cases referred to the United States.

This tri-partnership started in 2015 between The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, The World Pediatric Project and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital - all brought together with the common goal of providing much needed medical aide to various children in Barbados, both at home and overseas.

The World Pediatric Project is a humanitarian organization that volunteers their medical services, represented by a remarkable team of consultants, surgeons, nurses, technicians and staff who have all volunteered their time and resources to help the children of Barbados.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital provides the Operating theatres, the surgical team (anesthetist, surgical nurses and technicians etc.) The QEH plays a vital role in this partnership as it is their long term ownership of this project that will guarantee its success for their long suffering patients.

The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust’s role in the threeway partnership is in the first instance to provide accommodation for the WPP team, supplies and shipping and the administration of the waiting lists and coordinating of the patients.

The journey to get here was not an easy one, whether it was fixing curvature in spines or breaking bones and attaching fixators to legs, the thought of surgery for these children was scary. This process, as

one can imagine from the outset, presents a gloomy and painful picture - the end results however, tells another story.

and also be a listening ear. In the end, we have changed well over 100 families’ lives forever and for the better.

The impact these surgeries have on a child’s life goes way beyond physical, it is also emotional and psychological too. The level of self-confidence witnessed from each and every child who benefits from our programmes speaks volumes. It is an assurance that at the end of every dark cloud lays the promise of a rainbow.

What was once considered a daunting mission has become a reality and a phenomenal accomplishment of which we all should be proud. This could not have been accomplished without the kind courtesies of our many donors and partners to the Trust who have given ever so generously at our last fund raising event; and of course the tri-partnership between the SLCT, WPP and the QEH.

The support from SLCT goes way beyond financial. The seriousness of these operations - means that we needed to calm fears, provide reassurance that the children were receiving world class care, provide empathetic support for parents,

various SLCT-WPP Clinics i.e. Blounts, General Orthopedic and Scoliosis Clinics held last February, April, May, July, September and October.

The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust remains committed to ensuring that Barbadian children receive the required medical care to enhance their quality of life. Despite the enormity and scale of the orthopedic problem, we are indeed proud of how far we have come. Notwithstanding that there is still some way to go. We are very encouraged by the commitment to this partnership and will endeavour to find alternative ways and funds to give desperate families who in reality are unable to afford the cost of these much needed operations.

Healthy Hearing Missions The Trust remains committed to working with our partners at the World Pediatric Project and the Ministry of Health ENT department to continue our biannual sponsorship, which forms part of the Healthy Hearing Mission. We are very pleased to continue our work following the successful completion of five Cochlear implant surgeries over the last five years.

We have been very fortunate to have the services of two generous and highly qualified audiologists who visit Barbados twice a year, to assess and assist with our more complex audiology needs – this includes all programming and assessments and saves our children and their families from the ordeal of travelling overseas for this extensive therapy. In May 2019, during their annual visit, the team examined and assessed over 40 children.

We also rely on their expertise and buying power in the USA to purchase the most up to date equipment. In addition, the local audiologists can call on their support and input for linking their equipment and testing over the internet, throughout the year.

Thanks to the Trust, the purchase of this much needed equipment and the continuing support with supplies, The Ministry of Health has been able to re-establish the baby screening programme in the hope of identifying hearing problems within the first few weeks after birth.

Additionally, the Trust also funds the annual calibration of all Audiology equipment at the Cecil Graham Development Centre.

We also continue to fund The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust Hearing Aid Bank. By the end of 2019, we would have dispensed over 40 hearing aids and replacement earmolds to children in need, who would otherwise have to wait for non-forthcoming government funding.

The SLCT also continues to provide financial support for additional speech therapy for children with cochlear implants – this by extension assists these children with the much needed extra support to try and keep up with this gift we often take for granted.

World Pediatric Project Exploring New Opportunities The medical horizons are beginning to broaden as it pertains to the SLCT, WPP & the QEH. Discussions and clinics were held in the last quarter of 2019, as the tri-partnership began to explore other medical conditions that continue to go untreated amongst our Barbadian children. Specialists in the treatment and care of Erb’s Palsy, Cerebral Palsy and Congenital Cardiac Disease have come forward to explore options, offer advice and consider future potential missions for these conditions.

CONGENITAL CARDIAC DISEASE Another medical condition still at the exploration stage, but one in which the SLCT has keen interest, is the helping of children with Congenital Cardiac Disease.

After discussions with the WPP Team, three children have been identified to receive overseas treatments in 2020. These treatments do not only improve the quality of life, but really are lifesaving operations; this means the world to families who without our support could not afford. We at the SLCT remain committed to doing all that we can to save the lives of such children.

ERB’S PALSY

CEREBRAL PALSY

Erb’s Palsy results from the unnatural stretching of a baby’s neck and shoulder as it passes through the birth canal at birth or early bodily trauma in the first few months of life. Erb’s Palsy affects the nerves within the neck that controls the movement of the arm, upper body and hands. This condition turns muscles inward toward the body, disrupting mobility and if left untreated can lead to permanent damage and paralysis. Recognising the need to assists these precious souls, The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust in association with our partners at the World Pediatric Project and the QEH hosted the first ever Erb’s Palsy Clinic in Barbados in June 2019. Over 26 children were examined by expert surgeon Dr. Wall and further exploration of these cases will be pursued in 2020.

Any opportunity to assist with the quality of life for a child is paramount for us at SLCT. Therefore when the WPP provided an opportunity for exploration for these special needs children, we were indeed eager to facilitate this. In October 2019, a total of 35 children in Barbados living with CP were examined by Californian WPP specialist surgeon Dr. Davids, who generously donated his time for the consultations and assessments. The window of opportunity remains open and we are hopeful that in 2020 with the collaborative efforts of the SLCT, WPP, QEH and the Children Development Center we can start the process of helping this often much neglected sector of the community.

Significant Endeavours

REACHING HUNDREDS OF VULNERABLE AND “AT RISK” CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY, BECAUSE EVERY CHILD DESERVES HOPE & OPPORTUNITY. THE EDEN LODGE YOUTH GROUP – BACK TO SCHOOL AND CHRISTMAS HAMPER PROJECT The Eden Lodge Youth Group is an umbrella charity that was formed in 1996, to assist needy children in Barbados. Its particular focus is to help children whose parents are unemployed and are unable to provide even the basics for their children – food, clothing school supplies etc. Each family is visited, evidence collected, photographs taken and an assessment made of the need before food vouchers are issued to the retailers. The group also provides support and assistance to the parents in trying to find employment.

This year more than any with the economic decline continuing to affect so many more families, The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust funded the Group’s “Back to School Programme” – the provision of new school uniforms and school supplies for an increased number of children. This year a staggering 370 children were in dire need.

Additionally the Trust provided lunch grants/ vouchers for 65 children who, through your support were able to have at least one full meal a day.

The Eden Lodge Charitable Trust also administers and coordinates the distribution of the “Christmas Hamper Programme” – bringing a little Christmas

cheer to those families struggling with hard times.

With extra support from Corporate Barbados this year we provided Christmas food, drink and gifts for 280 families.

THE WHEELCHAIR SCHEME This clinic was started in 1998 to assist with the annual maintenance and adaptation of wheelchairs for children with special needs. Providing seating for such children is a constantly adaptable process.

As the children grow, their chairs needs adjusting and monitoring on a regular basis. The Children Development Centre through extensive training is able to complete this assessment process and then coordinate those children in need to ensure they receive the required equipment and the very best of care.

The trust was delighted to undertake the “Barbados Wheelchair Scheme”, a scheme previously managed by the Because of Jenna Trust to ensure that these children receive the benefit of optimum independence and mobility in comfort.

FM-H SLCT CHILD HELPLINE In April of 2019 The Trust funded the launch of a child helpline – the first of its kind in Barbados. Its aim, to support Faith Marshall-Harris, a child advocate lawyer and United Nations committee member on the “rights of a child” to form and run a 24 hour helpline for

Barbadian children to reach out regarding all areas of concern – abuse, neglect, school issues, bullying, suicide etc. There are 28 volunteers to help man the telephones, who are all trained social workers, even if not practicing currently. The calls are managed, logged and then referred to either a school guidance counsellor, the Child Care Board or the Welfare Department and then followed up.

A great deal of work still has to be undertaken on the promotion of the new helpline – school visits, government agencies, social media etc but the initial feedback from these government agencies is very positive….we are providing a much needed and long overdue service.

SPORT FOR LIFE – “THE CHOICES I MAKE TODAY WILL DETERMINE THE COURSE MY LIFE TAKES TOMORROW” The Trust has been supporting this programme for some 11 years now. It is a marvellous initiative that uses the power of sport to change the lives of approximately 30 children, who are under achievers at school, have disciplinary issues or have been referred by government agencies, each year.

Numerous volunteers meet weekly to coach the children through sport, academic support and life skills training to improve their self-esteem, academic confidence and reinforce the child’s learning at school.

The cohort also insists on family support and provides counselling on raising teenagers, discipline, healthy lifestyles and responsible sexuality.

The annual June graduation is always a true celebration of the enormous change in these students and the impact the programme has made. Many students also stay on after two years and become interns, supporting their younger peers and undergoing leadership training…a true indication of the power of positive influences on these children’s lives.

DECS – DRUG EDUCATION COUNSELLING SERVICES This charity provides education and counselling to student and youths, who are having serious challenges with drug abuse and behavioural and disciplinary issues. These individuals are referred to DECS by the probation department (90%) police officers (rather than charging the individual) and by desperate

parents. The aim is quite simple - through providing counselling, an alternative education style and a variety of extracurricular activities it is hoped that the affected individuals will be kept busy, have a goal to work towards (even 1 or 2 CXCs) and be shown a different path towards leading a productive life.

DECS also runs a highly successful mentoring programme – dozens of volunteer mentors from various different walks of life meet weekly, playing sport, offering career advice and support from simply a different perspective.

LEVEL UP SCHOOL PROGRAMME SLCT and the Department of Education worked together with a group of male counsellors to design an in-house school programme intended to foster safer schools by reducing student gang related, school based violence.

The programme was launched in March 2019 in two high risk secondary schools, namely Grantley Adams Secondary School and Lester Vaughan School.

Its methodology was to concentrate on identified students (25 in each school) and target them for group sessions. To then meet the challenges head on with the three young counsellors, to teach the students conflict resolution, problem solving, emotional intelligence and empower them to change their behaviour in a positive environment.

Community Outreach “IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD” On this little island of Barbados, there are numerous dedicated individuals and small groups that harness their passion, motivation and leadership in the community where they live. They mobilize others around them, involve local schools and churches and reach out, making a huge difference in the lives of thousands of Barbadian children. These small organisations form the drive and the energy to get things done, bring awareness of poverty, hunger and identify the needs of local children and their families in their community.

Others realise the strength and value in creating extracurricular activities for after school and weekends, sport, drama or dance, book or homework clubs. all making a difference and imparting positive change in the lives of the children. These well-run community programmes need our support; they use adult supporters and volunteers so are often looking for relatively small donations

but these cheques ensure that these initiatives can be started and can keep the children off the streets. They can acquire new life skills, develop awareness, find expression and then emerge stronger with new confidence and a sense of hope.

This year over 28 little, non-profit charity organisations were recipients of donations and went to work offering hope and a bright future for so many children. Each dollar spent makes a huge difference in the lives of so many children; feeding, reading and guiding these children to a brighter future.

We applaud the work of the organisers, inspiring mentors, counsellors and hundreds of volunteers who manage these programmes and give of their time and energies to the children of our Barbadian community.

Expanding Horizons SMALL THINGS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE, DIFFERENCES THAT WE OFTEN CANNOT QUANTIFY Like many children around the world, the financial necessity of a working mother and support system means that school vacations are no longer about family and holidays, but often boring days remaining within the home, alone. This year The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust provided safe havens and wonderful supportive environments for many such children by funding numerous different daytime camps.

These small donations made to non-profit camp organisations supported underprivileged children, and offered equal opportunities to experience summer fun, sports, and educational stimulation.

They provided the forum to learn about and meet exceptional people, to visit many interesting and unusual places and exposed them to new experiences that these children could only dream of.

Thanks to the camps’ mentors and coaches leading the way, these children’s lives were enriched as they were inspired to learn, play and experience summer fun.

Helping hand for Barbadian children THE quality of life of scores of Barbadian children have been improved in a very significant way thanks to a partnership between Sandy Lane Charitable Trust World the (SLCT), Paediatric Project and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

This was essentially the message Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to Barbados, His Excellency Gustavo Martinez Pandiani delivered to young campers, during the Camp Energy 2019 Closing Ceremony held at the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) Paragon Base in Christ Church on Friday.

“Do not give on your dreams.Whatever you want to do in life, you are going to do it. Don’t give up. Of course, there will be obstacles along the road, challenges… [but] if you really want to be someone in life, to change your social environment, your family’s future, you can do it if you really fight for it” the Ambassador admonished.

As he delivered the feature address, His Excellency Gustavo Martinez Pandiani shared with the youngsters his own childhood dream of becoming an Ambassador, which has come to fruition.

He noted that from around the age of eight or nine, he had such a dream. He acknowledged that there were some critics who tried to discourage him from attaining his dream, by suggesting that it was only attainable for those who were sons or grandsons of diplomats. However, he told the campers that he worked and studied really hard and against all odds, was able to attain his heart’s desire.

He therefore stressed, “Do not let anyone put a limit to your dreams. You will do exactly what you want to do, if you are ready to fight for it, if you are ready to do an extra effort. Go the extra mile and you will get there. As a witness about dreams being possible, I know it is possible. So do not give up”.
