WELCOME The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust has a singular mission – “Helping the under privileged children of Barbados” by whatever means necessary. Whether that be with health, education, community programmes or alleviation of poverty.

Our mission is simply to protect and assist those who are too young to help themselves.

To this end, tonight’s event is a joining of like-minded individuals, a celebration of the work of the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust and its collaboration with generous sponsors and donors. It is our opportunity to explain how last year’s generous donations were carefully spent, but also to raise the much needed funds for next year’s endeavours for these needy children.

So whilst you are enjoying the glorious surroundings of this beautiful island of Barbados, please do spare a thought and a donation for those children less fortunate than ourselves. Take the time to visit our silent auction, which has some amazing prizes this year.

Interesting, unique and despite the rumours, definitely some “bargains” to be had.

The Trust and its work would not be possible without the generous support of local and overseas donors - the team sponsors who compete for the coveted golf prizes, the local companies who donate items for both our live and silent auction and the individuals who generously donate large sums of money, safe in the knowledge that their funds will be put to good use. All of this support, in whatever form, is always encouraging and is truly appreciated.

The Trust continues to run with no expenses or salaries and therefore every dollar donated goes towards providing for children in need in Barbados.

The Trust recognizes some of the monumental challenges facing Barbadian educators. Funds were directed to supporting change through the sponsorship of numerous schools, charities and not for profit organisations positively affecting the lives of thousands of children in our schools. In coordination with the Ministry of Education the Trust supports counseling, teacher training, student intervention and innovative academic programs.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH It takes a Village to Raise a Child On this little Island we call home there are numerous dedicated individuals and small groups that harness their passion, motivation and leadership in the community where they live. They mobilize others around them, involve local schools and churches and reach out, making a huge difference in the lives of thousands of Barbadian children.

These small organisations form the drive and the energy to get things done, bring awareness of poverty, hunger, identify need, they work in “the trenches“, making a difference and imparting positive change in our communities. These well run community programs need our support; so children and adolescents can engage in these initiatives. They can acquire new life skills, develop

awareness, find expression and then emerge stronger with new confidence and a sense of hope.

“It takes a village to raise a child”. This year over 35 little, non-profit charity organisations were recipients of donations and went to work offering hope and a bright future for so many children. Each dollar makes a huge difference in the lives of so many children, feeding, reading and guiding these children to a brighter future.

We applaud the work of the organisers, inspiring mentors, counsellors and hundreds of volunteers who manage these programs and give of their time and energies to the children of our Barbadian community.

THE SUNSHINE EARLY STIMULATION CENTRE AND THE JOHN PAYNE SCHOOL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN Can you imagine a place where a child can learn at their own pace, be exposed to multiple learning opportunities, be in an environment that is caring, loving and safe, whilst having fun?

and occupational therapy group sessions. We believe that our students should be exposed to as many learning opportunities as possible so that they can develop as well-rounded children and beyond.

Sunshine Early Stimulation Centre provides these opportunities and many more for our special students. Our trained and committed staff work every day with our children to help them reach their fullest potential. As a Centre, we accept students between the ages of two and eleven years, with various special needs and developmental disorders. We believe in early intervention, as this helps to lessen the effects of the disability or delay. Our caring individual services are designed to identify and meet the child’s needs in the areas of physical development, cognitive development, communication and social & emotional development. Our programme also extends its reach to the whole family, through proactive and personalised partnerships, systems based on the understanding that the learning and coping mechanisms with these special children involves the whole extended family.

This year, we have embarked on a project to develop the outdoor spaces around the school, so that learning can be continued outside in a comfortable and safe manner for all. This project includes pergolas, which the children use as planters as they learn about the various ways plants grow and as they engage in the planting, maintenance and reaping process. Once their crops are ready, they will use them in their living skills lesson to make various healthy snacks and drinks. Another part of the project is the play house, a bright and colourful house where the children can pretend they are in an actual house preparing items, setting the table and tidying up the house. These are all necessary skills needed for students to learn self-help skills and to function independently.

Our programme incorporates not only the teaching of academic subject areas, but it also includes activities such as swimming, gymnastics, creative arts, daily living skills

The Centre continues to be thankful to its committed staff who ensure that all these wonderful learning experiences occur on a daily basis. We are very thankful to the parents who have entrusted the care of their children to us and continue to work

along with us to ensure the best possible outcomes for their child. We are extremely thankful to the Sandy Lane Benefactors, whose generous donations ensure that the running costs of the school are met and the facility can continue. It is only through this support that the Centre remains open, the activities of the Centre can occur and these special children have somewhere to go.

We want to especially thank the members of the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust who have been with the Centre from the inception and continue to be a crucial part of the Centre both financially and in person.

There has never been separate psychiatric provision made for children under 16 in Barbados and up until now the children requiring residential psychiatric help have been placed in the main Psychiatric hospital in an all adult ward.

This is clearly an unacceptable situation that places children who not only have the emotional and psychological challenges of their illnesses, but also adds the fear and distress of being placed with unknown adults that often have more severe mental issues.

The Trust built, equipped and provided a totally separate child only unit within a secluded and leafy corner of the main psychiatric hospital. It was opened by the Hon. Mia Amor Mottley Prime Minister of Barbados on the 8th December 2018.

Our architect Kevin Browne has produced some modern and innovative designs that cleverly take into account the challenges that these children are potentially experiencing and hopefully added a sense of light and bright positive energy to this new area.

“The Thrive Family Centre” has been so named to conjure up great positive sentiments and feelings, as its definition of “thrive” confirms.

The tree logo is used to emphasise the strength and natural growth of the individual within the program and facility. The leaves of the tree are also symbolic of the many interconnecting facets of a person’s health and well being.

“The Thrive Family Centre” is an essential link back to family because we need everyone: Doctors, children, parents ,extended family and public at large to understand and appreciate that the mental health of an individual child is dependent upon and linked to the long term support and structure of the family unit, in which the child is being raised.

Our commitment is to provide a facility that can help, educate and transition these children and their families into a life of confidence and empowerment.

This can only come with the support from the fully trained team in suitable surroundings and the love and understanding of their families in a comforting environment.

THE SANDY LANE CHARITABLE TRUST ORTHOPEDIC CLINICS WITH WORLD PEDIATRIC PROJECT In 2015 The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust formed part of a “tri partnership”, SLCT, The World Pediatric Project and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital – all brought together with the common goal of providing much needed medical aid to various different children in Barbados, both at home and overseas.

The World Pediatric Project is a humanitarian organisation that volunteers their medical services, represented by remarkable team of consultants, surgeons, nurses, technicians, and staff who have all volunteered their time and resources to help the children of Barbados.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital provides the operating theatres, the surgical team (anaesthetist, surgical nurses and technicians etc) the aftercare e.g: the bed space in the wards, necessary drugs and then the all-important follow up treatment i.e: physiotherapy and follow up consultations etc. The QEH plays a vital role in this partnership as it is their long term ownership of this project that will guarantee its success for their long suffering patients.

The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust’s role in the three way partnership is in the first instance to provide whatever funding is necessary to ensure the Barbados mission is achieved – flights, and accommodation for the WPP team, supplies and shipping and the administration of the waiting lists and coordinating of the patients.

Secondly, to provide medical and subsistence sponsorship wherever necessary for the children and their families, that are the more severe cases, that require treatment overseas.

In March of 2017 the SLCT coordinated the first Sandy Lane Charitable Trust Scoliosis Clinic, where, with a QEH and WPP surgical team, we assessed and evaluated 158 children with Scoliosis, a debilitating disease that chronically affects the curvature of the spine, resulting in pain and eventually organ failure.

This clinic identified 70 children who urgently required surgical intervention, an astounding value of 15-20 million Barbados Dollars.

Through the generous donations made at the 2018 fund raising event and the additional teams of WPP surgeons who donated their time, we are thrilled to announce that

by February 2019 we will have operated on and removed from our list 44 of those children, with the aim being that a further 24 will receive their surgeries within 2019. Thus eliminating the eight year backlog and hopefully ensuring a manageable situation in the near future.

2018 BLOUNTS PROGRAM In June of 2017 a second SLCT Clinic was held – this time, over 120 children were registered, examined and their general orthopedic needs assessed. The most acute and critical cases presented were the debilitating Blount’s disease – a severe curvature of the legs, leading to total immobility and pain.

The cure for this disease is an extremely painful operation involving the breaking of bones and the attaching of fixators on both legs. These fixators require daily screwing and three times weekly physiotherapy both of which cause excruciating pain and suffering to the child.

The whole procedure involves a minimum of a six-eight month stay overseas, which naturally also causes additional family and home related stress issues too.

Keen to explore alternative ways of addressing this problem, the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, working with the WPP and the QEH team funded the Phase One of the first Blounts Program at the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia in October of 2018. Two surgeons and two physiotherapists from the QEH flew to Philadelphia for a ten day induction and training. They escorted two Barbadian children with severe Blounts to observe their surgical procedure and their physiotherapy program, so that it can be continued here in Barbados, thus reducing the minimum six month stay to 7 weeks.

SLCT will fund the ongoing visiting costs of the surgeons, but the hope is that this will reduce over time as the local team takes a more active role.

Phase two will eventually involve the operations being undertaken here in Barbados by a visiting surgical team, with the aftercare and physiotherapy completely entirely by local medical teams, thus removing the need for the child and guardian to leave the island completely.

Despite the enormity and scale of this orthopedic problem, we are still greatly encouraged by the commitment to this partnership shown by all parties concerned.

It truly is a testament to the understanding that the island has a desperate need for this help. We at the Sandy Lane Charitable trust are determined to continue to find alternative ways and funds to give these desperate families the much needed operations that they have been promised for so many years.

THE GIFT OF HEARING Having now completed five successful Cochlear implant surgeries in the last two years and giving the gift of hearing to these special children – the Trust, with the advice and support of the World Paediatric Program and the Ministry of Health ENT department is committed to continuing the sponsorship of the bi annual – Healthy Hearing Missions.

Two generous and highly qualified audiologists visit Barbados twice a year to assess and assist with our more complex audiology needs – this includes all programming and assessments and saves our children and their families from the ordeal of travelling overseas for this extensive therapy. In addition, with the purchase of the most up to date equipment, by the Trust, the local audiologists can call on the support and the input of the overseas specialists, linking their equipment and testing over the internet, throughout the year.

Thanks to the Trust, the purchase of the much needed equipment and the continuing support with supplies, The Ministry of Health has been able to re-establish the baby screening program in the hope of identifying hearing problems within the first few weeks after birth.

The trust also funds the annual calibration of all Audiology equipment at the Cecil Graham Development Centre.

We also continue to fund the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust Hearing Aid Bank, which by the end of 2018 will have dispensed over 45 hearing aids to children in need, who would otherwise wait for non-forth coming government funding.

The SLCT has also funded additional speech therapy for children with cochlear implants – assisting with the much needed extra support to try and catch up on what we take for granted.

SMALL FOCUSED COMMUNITY CAMPS MAKING A DRAMATIC DIFFERENCE TO CHILDREN’S LIVES These small donations made to non-profit camp organisations go to support hundreds of children who otherwise may not experience a summer of education through fun. Each camp is unique, enriching these children’s lives and introducing them to new experiences. Children are mentored and inspired by the teachings and guidance of wonderful counsellors, “champions of change “who dedicate their time to the less fortunate children in our society.

Specialty camps opened their doors to children of disability, at risk and low income communities, children living with diabetes, families affected by HIV Aids, children transitioning to teenhood and those already challenged with substance abuse. Supporting our community through these programs enables these children to overcome some of life’s challenge that children should not face alone.

SPREADING THE WORD The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust is extremely grateful to Barbados’ media for the coverage of a great many of our projects. The support of the media is extremely important in raising awareness. Many of our medical cases and worthy causes come to the Trust due to articles seen in recent media coverage. In addition we are able to say thank you to those people who support us and to show the Barbadian people we are there to help.

There has been fabulous media coverage throughout the year, sharing news on the distribution of the funds raised by the annual fundraising event. This helps raise awareness amongst local sponsors, patrons and families in need.

10 years of Sports for Life “SUCCESS is Earned, Not Given” was the theme for the graduation ceremony of Sports for Life (SFL) held this past weekend where Trustee of the Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, Phillipa Challis, reminded the graduates that the theme was an important lesson in life. during Speaking the ceremony at the Kensington Oval Media Centre, Challis thanked all those involved in the programme and tipped her hat to their effort, which she deemed as incredible. She stated that efforts such as SFL play an important role in society.

“Programmes such as Sports for Life play a vital role in today’s society and they add an immeasurable and I often think an unquantifiable value to the lives of not only the graduates, but the lives of the families, schools and teachers.”

She spoke on behalf of the Sandy Lane

Charitable Trust when she stated they always felt good that they could contribute in such a way that the Sports for Life Programme could keep going as it has for the past ten years. Looking directly at those who had completed the programme, she said she genuinely wanted to say well done and that the children deserved a pat on the back. In her remarks, she mentioned the impact that sports has on dealing with the youth and how learning a sport places the children in touch not only with their physical body, but also their competitive spirit, strengths and weaknesses, which drive them beyond what they think they could achieve.
