Getting Started Apply for Admission slcc.edu New Students If you have never attended Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) or have not attended for more than three years, you are required to: • Complete an Admission Application.

• Submit it by the application deadline for the semester you want to enroll.

• Pay a nonrefundable $40 application fee online with a debit or credit card, or in person at Cashier Services at Jordan, South City, Miller or Taylorsville Redwood campuses.

For most students, application for admission is valid for three years. Exceptions apply if you are:

Concurrent Enrollment Students (current or former) If you are planning to attend SLCC within one year of your high school graduation, you do not need to reapply.

Make sure to submit an Admission Application Update through your MySLCC by the admissions deadline for the semester.

International Students International Students have separate admission application processes and deadlines.

Returning Students

Interested in the School of Applied Technology & Technical Specialties? (SATTS)

If you: • Have been absent from the College for one to three years or • Have been admitted but did not begin classes during your semester of admission and wish to begin at a later date You are required to: • Complete the online Admission Application Update on your MySLCC account under the Semester Checklist tab.

• Submit the Admission Application Update by the admission deadline for the semester you want to enroll. here is no charge to submit the Admission T Application Update.

Indicate on the Admission Application that you are interested in taking short-term, flexible courses for career training or earning a certificate. When you have submitted your application, meet with an SAT advisor to determine your desired program, availability and eligibility.

The advisor will lead you through the next steps.

Note: If you are switching from a credit program to the School of Applied Technology, or vice versa, you must fill out the Admission Application Update.

Apply for Financial Aid We want to help you take the worry out of funding your education by guiding you toward many types of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, work study and loans.

You can get started by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at fafsa.ed.gov Federal School Code: 005220 Apply as early as possible. The process can take up to three months to complete.

Priority consideration will be given to students who have completed applications by April for the summer and fall semesters and by November for the spring semester. For specific information about the deadlines and application steps visit slcc.edu/financialaid.

Types of Financial Aid Scholarships: Salt Lake Community College has many scholarship opportunities for first-year and continuing students. Scholarships don’t need to be paid back—they are free money—and all kinds of students receive scholarships. If you can provide examples of good grades, leadership, athletic ability, community service or other special skills, you’re off to a good start.

Loans: Federal Title IV loan programs assist students with their educational expenses and are repaid when the student is no longer attending or enrolled in at least six credit hours. SLCC participates in three federal loan programs: Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Direct Stafford Student Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized) and Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS).

Grants: Grants are gifts of money that do not have to be repaid under most circumstances. You must show a significant amount of financial need to qualify for grant programs. Most grant funding is limited, so early application is encouraged.

Complete the Placement Process Before you can register for classes, it is recommended you submit your ACT/SAT scores or complete the SLCC Placement Process. The results will be used to advise you regarding appropriate class placement, especially in English and math courses.

The SLCC Placement Process is free the first time (the cost is included in the $40 SLCC Admission Application fee). Retakes cost $15 each. Visit slcc.edu/testing for current policies on the number of retakes allowed and how long your scores will remain valid.

We highly encourage you to prepare before taking the test. Your scores will determine the courses you can take.

Visit an SLCC Testing Center to complete the SLCC Placement Process. The placement is available daily on a walk-in basis at Taylorsville Redwood, South City, Jordan, Westpointe and West Valley locations. You must provide a photo ID and your SLCC Student Number to take the test.

Transferring from another college?

If you have college credits from another college or university, you may be exempt from all or part of the placement assessment. Please submit your official college transcripts and complete a Request for Evaluation of Transfer Credits. You want to be sure that your previous credits become a part of your academic history as you continue your education at SLCC. Don’t put it off. This process can take 2-4 weeks or longer during peak registration periods.

All first-time, first-year students must complete an in-person orientation including new students and former concurrent enrollment students. Returning and transfer students do not have to complete an orientation, but can register earlier for classes if they do.

Understand Your Educational Path Explore Degree Options Are you planning to transfer to another institution to obtain a bachelor’s degree? Explore a transfer degree: Associate of Science (AS) This degree is for you if you want to complete your general education and pre-major courses before transferring to a bachelor’s degree program. This is a great track for students who want to explore different academic options.

Associate of Arts (AA) This degree choice is much like the AS degree with the addition of a foreign language requirement.

Associate of Pre-Engineering (APE) This is a specialized program to prepare you to transfer into an engineering major at a university. You will be required to complete a significant amount of engineering coursework while taking fewer general education courses.

Are you planning to enter the workforce upon graduation? Explore a degree that prepares you to enter the workforce: Associate of Applied Science (AAS) If you’re interested in a fast track toward an entry-level career, then this choice is right for you. AAS degrees require more program-specific courses with limited general education requirements.

Certificate of Completion (CC) This path will help you focus on a specialized field of study that matches students with good-paying jobs that are in high demand in Utah.

Certificate of Proficiency (CP) If you already are working in the field of your choice and you want an education to refine or improve your skills for a raise or promotion, you should investigate your options with this track.

Certificate of Achievement (CA) If you want to jump-start your career and get prepared for an entry-level job, this alternative may be right for you.

Academic Advisors Assist you with identifying personal academic goals, exploring course offerings and interpreting assessment results. We serve as a resource for students if you are experiencing difficulty, assist you with educational planning, program prerequisites, course sequencing and monitor progress toward a degree or completion of your educational goals.

What types of classes are available?

SLCC offers a variety of methods of instruction to accommodate your study habits and needs.

Course Type

Online

Description Course is conducted entirely online.

You will track, access, navigate and submit all assignments via an electronic platform.

Is This For You? Good for students who are self-motivated and can keep track of deadlines on their own, who feel comfortable communicating online and enjoy working independently.

Hybrid

Course takes place both in person and online. Meets in a classroom once or twice a week for a total of 75–100 minutes. You will access, navigate and submit assignments via an electronic platform.

Is This For You? Good for students who want to connect with other students (but not too much) and feel equally comfortable working in person and online.

Classroom Lecture

Lab

Courses may have limited online elements. Typically will meet two or three days a week in a designated classroom.

Is This For You? Good for students who want to connect with other students, need to be in a specific location to learn effectively and prefer to receive instruction in person.

How do I start?

The first step to register for classes is to create your MySLCC username and password.

• Visit slcc.edu, hover over MySLCC and click on MySLCC, or go to my.slcc.edu.

• I f you do not know your SLCC Student Number (S#), go to Look Up Your Student Number (S#).

• If you know your S#, go to First Time Users and complete all of the information.

• Once you have logged into your MySLCC, select the Registration tab.

Plan your class schedule electronically before you register. Schedule Planner allows you to map out a class schedule that fits your needs.

Plan ahead for convenient and easy registration.

Log in to MySLCC to access Schedule Planner on the Registration tab today—plan your schedule, then register early for best course selection.

If you are at one of our computer labs, feel free to ask any staff member for assistance.

Waitlisting Important! If you are waitlisted for a class, you must check your BruinMail available through MySLCC. Once you receive notification that you are able to register for the class, you must register within 24 hours or the spot will go to the next person on the waitlist.

Tip: Use Mobile App Ellucian GO to access your class schedule.

Be Ready When Classes Begin Check Financial Aid Requirements Important! Make sure to complete any requirements as soon as possible to avoid disbursement delay.

How to check requirements through MySLCC:

1. L og in to your MySLCC account.

2. Select the Tuition and Financial Aid tab.

3. Check under Financial Aid Requirements for any messages.

4. If you see any red flags, make sure to follow up and correct any issues.

Get Your OneCard The OneCard is the official student ID of SLCC and your key to campus life.

You must be currently registered (enrolled in at least one class) and show official photo ID to obtain a OneCard.

Purchase Your Parking Permit All vehicles are required to have a permit at all SLCC locations (unless you are using metered parking or paying for visitor’s parking). To purchase a parking permit log in to your MySLCC account and go to the Semester Checklist tab.

Arrange to Pay Tuition Paying your tuition and fees has never been easier. You have the option of paying online through MySLCC with an electronic check, savings account transfer, accepted credit card or debit card. You may also pay by phone at 801- 957-3914, by mail or visit one of our locations at Taylorsville Redwood, South City, Miller and Jordan campuses to pay in person.

Avoid late fees by paying at the time of registration or making timely payment arrangements.

Tuition Payment Plan (TPP)

A TTP lets you spread your tuition and fees over four monthly payments for fall and spring semesters, and over three payments for the summer semester. A TPP does not reduce your financial obligation to the College.

The first installment must be included at the time of application. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee per semester. Please apply and pay online through your MySLCC account.

Buy Books and Supplies You can look up the books you need for your classes on MySLCC. Log in to your MySLCC and go to the Semester Checklist tab. The Explore Your Textbook Options link is in the bottom right corner of the page.
