Message From the Mayor Winter has always been special time in the Warman household, whether it is going out and snowmobiling, ice fishing on Lesser Slave Lake, or playing a game of shinny on the new back-yard rink, we often find ourselves enjoying the great outdoors during the winter time.

Another great community celebration happens in Slave Lake during the winter, Frost Fest. I keep saying every year that the Frost Fest celebrations we just had is the best. This year I think I’ll be saying the same thing, as we have another great line up of events for the 16th annual Frost Fest.

We have great returning Frost Fest events that always draw the crowds, including the Family Carnival which is always a blast for kids of all ages, Movie Night at Rex Theatre, or Frolic in the Park at Schurter Park.

And this year the community has rallied together to bring some amazing new programs to Frost Fest. The Library is hosting an escape room, head out to the Boreal Centre to snowshoe under the stars, try your hand in outdoor curling at Dog Island Brewery, or if you’ve forgotten Valentine’s Day grab your loved one and head on down to the MRC for Couples Dance Class. We have a week packed full of events for everyone!

The weeklong celebration of Slave Lake begins February 8th and runs till February 17th. Be sure to get out and discover our great community and maybe try out a new event.

Saturday February 8th Pancake Breakfast Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110 Entrance by Donation Kick off Frost Fest 2020 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110. The Slave Lake Legion is hosting a pancake breakfast from 8:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.

Family Carnival CNRL Fieldhouse 11 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Free for ages 6 and under 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M $2/person for ages 3+ 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. $2/person for ages 15+

11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. is sponsored by Parent Link & the Coalition. It is for ages 0-6 and comes with a free canteen lunch.

12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. is for all ages and 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. is for ages 15 and older. Come and have your chance to jump on some castles, navigate through obstacles at the 16th annual Frost Fest Family Carnival!

Public CrossFit Competition Slave Lake CrossFit $10 each & proceeds will go to the winner’s charity of choice Come compete in our public competition! The gym will be open to the public February 8th and 15th from 11:00am to 1:00pm AND February 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and the 17th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm for the competition. There are two options to choose from or you can compete in both. The choices are: #1 7 Minutes to complete as many burpee’s as possible #2 1 Rep Max Deadlift.

Sunday February 9th Try it out Gymnastics Slave Lake Gymnastics (629 Main St. N) Free for Everyone, sponsored by Service Credit Union Sign up to try out gymnastics and see what it’s all about. Work with a coach and try the beams, bar and some basic tumbling moves!

You might also get to try to climb the peg board and the rope! Classes are from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M & 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M and there is a max of 16 people per class. Seniors Pie Making Legacy Centre Kitchen Free For Everyone In this class seniors will be learning to make pies! We will start from scratch by making pie dough, rolling it out, making the filling, and decorating the crust. You will be sent home with baking instructions so you can share with your friends or family! All food and ingredients are provided. This class has a max of 10 people. This class runs from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. To register you can come down to the MRC, call the front desk at 780-849-8028, or create an account & register online

Sunday February 9th Open Drop In Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110 Free for Everyone Come down to the Legion for open drop in from 1:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M! This includes the concession, a crib tournament, shuffle board, darts and 8-ball for everyone. There are extra crib boards for people to practice or learn.

Sledge Hockey Tervita Arena at the Multi-Rec Centre Free for Everyone Come try something new! Everyone is welcome to come try out sledge hockey. We have 8 sleds for taking turns.

Please bring a helmet (bike helmet will do) and a pair of gloves!

This event will take place from 2:45 P.M.-3:45 P.M.

Sunday February 9th Women’s Drop In Hockey Pembina Arena at the Multi-Rec Centre Free for Everyone Come out for a fun game of women’s shinny! Ages 16 years and older, and full gear is required. This ice time is from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.

Sunday February 9th How to Braid Multi-Rec Centre Multi-Purpose Room $20 per person Come and learn how to braid and how to turn it into a simple hairstyle. This class will cover the basic 3 strand braid. The small class atmosphere will allow you to receive one on one help from a hairstylist, who will also give you tips and tricks of the trade, including how to turn these into cute hairstyles.

Please bring your own brush, we will supply combs, elastic and hair clips. This class is for individuals 16 years and older with a max of 15 people. This class runs from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M

Monday February 10th Weaving Class Multi-Rec Centre Multi-Purpose Room $25.00 per person In this class we will be taking embroidery hoops and weaving different types, textures and thickness of yarn through it to make a beautiful decor piece. This class is for a maximum of 10 people and is for ages 16 years and older. Class runs from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday February 11th Outdoor Pond Skating Hilda Eben Park Free for Everyone Join the youth group Nexus with your skates at the outdoor ice rink for skating from 3:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. followed by hot chocolate and snacks at the Christian Community Centre (across the street).

Thai Cooking FIX. Coffee Bar & Bakery $35 per person Learn to cook a couple new recipes at FIX. Coffee Bar & Bakery.

Movie Night Rex Theatre Free Admission, sponsored by ATCO Electric and Rex Theatre ATCO and Rex Theatre invite you to Movie Night, at Rex Theatre. Come out and watch Disney’s Frozen 2, showtime is at 7:30 P.M.

Thursday February 13th Winter Sledding Hilda Eben Park Free for Everyone Join the youth group Nexus with your sled at the hill behind the skate board park for some epic sledding. If you don’t have your own sled we have a couple extra to spare. This event is happening from 3:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. followed by hot chocolate and snacks at the Christian Community Centre (across the street).

Ukrainian Dance Mulit-Rec Centre Lobby Free For Everyone The Ukrainian Dance Society wants you to see what they have been working on. Come grab a seat in the lobby and enjoy the show. Show gets underway at 4:30 P.M. and runs till 7:00 P.M.

Saturday February 15th Outdoor Curling Dog Island Brewing (250 Caribou Trail SW) Free For Everyone Hurry hard down to the brewery from 1:00 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. Milk jug curling will be happening in the parking lot outside the brewery. Bring your friends for couple ends. The brewery will be open during the event and is open to all ages!

Saturday February 15th Snowshoe Under the Stars

Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation Free For Everyone

Join us for an evening of star-gazing, snowshoeing, and snacks around the campfire! Meet at the Boreal Centre for a brief indoor presentation on astronomy, constellations, and night sky navigation. Then head out on a late night snowshoe hike down to the lake – dress warm and keep your fingers crossed for clear skies! Finish up with a marshmallow roast and stories around the campfire at the Nest. Registration is required for this FREE event, as there is limited space available. Sunday February 16th Women’s Clothing Swap Multi-Rec Centre Multi-Purpose Room Free For Everyone Need a closet update? Clothing swaps are a great way to recycle pieces you once loved and you get to pick up some new items for free! All sizes welcome. Bring at least 12 items of clothes, shoes, purses & accessories in “like new” condition (no holes, pilling, or stains). Doors will open at 5:30 P.M. for set up and the swap will begin at 6:00 P.M.
