Die Oktoberfestbilder von Volker Derlath

Von Christian Topp Am Anfang war der Maßkrug. 14 Jahre alt war Volker Derlath, als das Trinkgefäß schicksalhaft in sein Leben trat. Damals lebte er in einem Münchner Vorort, besuchte die 8. Klasse eines Gymnasiums und hatte ein paar Schulfreunde, mit denen er Freitag nachmittags in die nahegelegene Stadt fuhr, um beim Augustiner in der Fußgängerzone ein, zwei Maß Bier zu trinken. »Da habe ich schon gemerkt, dass der Maßkrug eine gewisse Bedeutung für mich hat«, erinnert er sich. Die Schwere des Glases mochte er von Anfang an: »Man weiß, was man in der Hand hat. Man weiß, was man tut.« Volker Derlath also, das stellen wir fest, ist ein handfester Biertrinker. Noch heute greift er bevorzugt zum Maßkrug, der bei guter Füllung einen Liter fasst – im Idealfall einen Liter Bier vom Fass.

1984 hat Derlath damit angefangen, auf dem Oktoberfest zu fotografieren. Damals war er Anfang 20. Wer zu dieser Zeit auf die Wiesn ging, kleidete sich in Jeans und T-Shirt oder Hemd, so wie Derlath heute noch. Doch seit den 80ern hat sich viel verändert auf dem größten Volksfest der Welt: Folkloristische Trachten haben sich als Dresscode durchgesetzt. Sicherheitsdienste patrouillieren in den Zelten und sorgen dafür, dass keiner auf den Tischen tanzt – die Bänke hingegen dürfen bestiegen werden. Und außerdem wird die Festwiese, über der stoisch die 18 Meter hohe Bronzestatue der Bavaria wacht, bereits seit Jahren während der Wiesn-Zeit wie ein Wildgehege eingezäunt.

Was sich in all den Jahren aber nicht geändert hat, sind die fotografischen Eckdaten der Fotoserie. Wie in den Anfangstagen fotografiert Derlath mit einer Pentax LX auf Schwarzweiß-Kleinbildfilm. Er benutzt einen frontalen Aufsteckblitz und bevorzugt ein Objektiv mit der Festbrennweite von 50 mm. Hin und wieder kommt auch ein leichtes Weitwinkelobjektiv mit 35 mm Brennweite zum Einsatz. In der Regel nimmt er seine Motive aus kürzester Distanz auf. Was nah am Objektiv ist, wird hell aufgeblitzt, was weiter hinten ist, tritt zurück. Die Konsequenz: Das Leben tobt im Vordergrund. Einzig die Lichtbänder der Beleuchtung vermitteln ein wenig räumliche Tiefe.

Derlaths Bilder erinnern an Bühnenfotos: Wie im Theater agieren darauf Menschen vor dunkler Kulisse. Ein Spotlight – in diesem Fall der Blitz – betont das Wesentliche der Szene.

Diese Assoziation ist kein Zufall. Schon bevor er mit seiner Oktoberfest-Serie begann, war der junge Fotograf mit seinen ungewöhnlichen Bühnenfotos aus der freien Theaterszene Münchens aufgefallen: Als Beobachter scheint er mittendrin im Geschehen zu sein. Auch seine Oktoberfestbilder zeichnet diese monumentale Unmittelbarkeit aus. Als wären da nur trinkende, feiernde, ausgelassene Menschen und mittendrin ein Fotograf, der gar keiner ist.

Fast alle Menschen, die Derlath fotografiert, befinden sich im Ausnahmezustand: überall Rausch und Ekstase, Zärtlichkeit und Gewalt, Erschöpfung und Übermut. Der Fotograf findet im Bierzelt, was er im Alltag des modernen Menschen vermisst: das Dionysische, Enthemmte, Grenzenlose, Leidenschaftliche. Und natürlich auch die Kehrseite der Euphorie: Verzweiflung, Erschöpfung, Agonie. Das ganze große Welttheater also, wie es auch auf einem

Bild zu finden ist, das ihn bis heute inspiriert: Pieter Bruegels Bauernhochzeit (1567). Jedes von Derlaths Oktoberfestfotos wirkt einzigartig und scheint trotzdem nur einen kleinen Ausschnitt aus dem großen Panoramabild des Menschseins zu zeigen. Zusammengesetzt ergeben die Details dann ein überdimensionales Wiesn-Wimmelbild.

Volker Derlath ist viel unterwegs, verreist aber nicht gern. Er interessiert sich für die ganze Welt, fürchtet aber die Fremde, die große Unvertraute. Für einen wie ihn ist deshalb das Hofbräuzelt der ideale Ort. Dort kommen sie alle zusammen: die Australier und die Italiener, die Briten und die Koreaner, die Brasilianer und die Österreicher, die US-Amerikaner und die Russen. Es ist ein »melting pot of nations«, wie er es nennt. Um darin einzutauchen, setzt er sich traditionell in die Nähe des Zelteingangs. Still und beinah unbemerkt kann er von seinem Platz das Geschehen beobachten und sich bei einer Maß Festbier recht schnell assimilieren.

Und was all denen passiert, die das Oktoberfest wirklich ernst nehmen, passiert auch Derlath regelmäßig – er kommt ins Gespräch mit anderen Menschen. Mit einem Kubaner redet er dann über den berühmten Boxer Teofilo Stevenson, Koreaner teilen freundschaftlich brennend scharfe Hühnerschenkel mit ihm und von einer Australierin erfährt er, dass die FotografieAusbildung im Rahmen eines Architekturstudiums in Australien viel besser sei als in Deutschland.

Mehr als 35 Jahre lang ist Derlath nun schon als Fotograf des großen Wiesn-Theaters unterwegs. Er hat dabei viel getrunken, sehr viel fotografiert und noch viel mehr gesehen. Kann man als Fotograf unter diesen Umständen überhaupt noch Motive finden, die neu sind? Wird man nicht zum Nachahmer seiner selbst? Derlath kontert mit einem Rat, den Bertold Brecht einst dem Komponisten Rudolf Wagner-Régeny gegeben hat: »Sie müssen ihre alte Naivität wiederfinden.« Konsequent versucht er, sein Projekt in dem Geist weiterzuführen, in dem er es begonnen hat. »Ich habe mir abgewöhnt, über dieses Problem nachzudenken«, sagt er, »weil ich darauf vertraue, dass irgendwie, irgendwann wieder ein neuer Aspekt aufblitzt.« Derlaths Oktoberfestbilder wirken zeitlos. Oder besser: aus der Zeit gefallen. Wären da nicht hin und wieder Frisuren und Outfits zu entdecken, die längst aus der Mode gekommen sind, könnte man kaum ein Bild eindeutig seiner Entstehungszeit zuordnen. Der Rausch scheint alle Menschen gleich zu machen. Und der Schritt von antiken Dionysos-Skulpturen zu Derlaths Bildern ist viel kleiner als vermutet. Denn mit seiner Art zu fotografieren überhöht der Fotograf den Moment. Die abgebildeten Menschen versteinern – betont durch die leichte Untersicht der meisten Motive – zu Statuen, die im Augenblick gebannt sind. Selbst dort, wo Leiber, Arme und Beine unentwirrbar verschlungen scheinen, verschwindet die skulpturale Anmutung nie ganz.

Zeigen die Bilder die Wahrheit über das Oktoberfest? Natürlich tun sie das. Sie zeigen die Wahrheit des Fotografen Volker Derlath. Und der muss es wissen. Schließlich ist er seit seiner Jugend ein begeisterter Biertrinker. Zwar ein maßvoller, aber das bedeutet eben auch, dass er eine volle Maß einer leeren vorzieht. Oder wie er es sagt: »Wo ein Maßkrug steht, da ist ein Stück Heimat für mich.«

By Christian Topp In the beginning was the Maßkrug (a beer stein). Volker Derlath was 14 years old when the drinking vessel fatefully entered his life. At that time, he was living in a Munich suburb and attended the 8th grade at high school. Together with a few friends from school, he would travel to the city center each Friday afternoon to drink a stein or two at the Augustiner beer hall in the recently pedestrianized area. “At this early age I already knew that the Maßkrug had a certain significance for me,” he recalls. Immediately, he fell for the weight and thickness of the glass. “You know what you’ve got in your hand. You know what you’re doing.” Derlath, you see, is a solid beer drinker. Even today, he prefers to drink from a Maßkrug, which holds a liter of draft beer if served properly.

Derlath started taking photographs at the Oktoberfest in 1984. At the time, he was in his early 20s. Anyone who went to the Wiesn (as it is known locally) at that time dressed in jeans and a T-shirt or shirt, as Derlath still does today. But since the 1980s, a lot has changed at the world’s largest fair: Dirndl and lederhosen have become the dress code. Security guards patrol the tents and make sure that no one dances on the tables—punters may climb on the benches, though. And what’s more, for years, the festival grounds, which are stoically watched over by the 18-meter-high bronze statue of Bavaria, have been fenced in like a game reserve.

What hasn’t changed over the years, however, are the parameters of Derlath’s photography series. Then, as now, Derlath is shooting with a Pentax LX on black-and-white 35 mm film. He uses a front-mounted flash and prefers a lens with a fixed focal length of 50 mm.

Occasionally, he opts for a light wide-angle lens with a focal length of 35 mm. As a rule, he shoots his subjects close up. What is nearest to the lens is brightly flashed, while the background recedes. Hence, the foreground is bursting with life. Only the ambient lights provide a little spatial depth.

Derlath’s photographs are reminiscent of stage photography: As in the theater, people act against a dark backdrop. A spotlight—in this case the flash—is used to focus on the scene.

This is not coincidental. Even before he began his Oktoberfest series, the young photographer had attracted attention with his unusual stage photographs from Munich’s fringe theaters.

Although an observer, he seems to be in the thick of things. His Oktoberfest photographs too are characterized by this immediacy: as if there were only people drinking and celebrating, and in their midst a photographer who is not a photographer at all.

Almost all the people on Derlath’s photographs are in a state: everywhere there is intoxication and ecstasy, tenderness and violence, exhaustion and exuberance. It is in the beer tents, where the photographer finds what he misses in everyday life: the Dionysian state of being, marked by transgression, boundlessness, passions. And, of course, its flip side as well: despair, exhaustion, agony. In short, the series presents us with the great world theatre, harking back to Pieter Bruegel’s Peasant Wedding (1567)—a painting which has inspired Derlath to this day. Each of Derlath’s Oktoberfest photographs appears unique and yet it seems to show only a small fraction of the larger panorama of the human condition. However, when put together, the individual photographs form a gigantic busy picture.

Volker Derlath travels a lot, but he does not like to travel. He is interested in the whole world, but is afraid of the unknown and unfamiliar. For someone like him, the Hofbräu beer tent is the real place. Here they all come together: the Australians and the Italians, the British and the Koreans, the Brazilians and the Austrians, the Americans and the Russians. It’s a “melting pot of nations,” as he calls it. To immerse himself in it, he usually sits near the entrance.

Quietly and almost unnoticed, he can observe the action and quickly join in over a stein of beer. What happens to all those who take the Oktoberfest really seriously also happens to Derlath regularly—he will be drawn into a conversation. He talks to a Cuban about the famous boxer Teofilo Stevenson; Koreans amicably share burning hot chicken drumsticks with him, and he learns from an Australian that the photography training as part of an architecture degree in Australia is much better than in Germany.

For more than 35 years now, Derlath has covered the grand Wiesn theater. He has drunk a lot, photographed a lot and seen a lot more. Under these circumstances, can a photographer still find new motifs? Doesn’t he become a copyist of himself? Derlath sweeps these concerns aside by quoting the writer Bertold Brecht who once advised the composer Rudolf WagnerRégeny: “You have to find your old naiveté again.” Therefore, Derlath tries to pursue his project in the spirit it was conceived. “I’ve stopped thinking about this problem,” he says, “because I trust that somehow, some day, a new aspect will reveal itself.”

Derlath’s Oktoberfest photographs seem timeless. Or rather: beyond time. If it weren’t for the hairstyles and outfits that have long gone out of fashion, it would be hard to assign a date to any of them. The intoxication seems to render all people equal. And time gap between the archaic Dionysus sculptures and Derlath’s photographs is much smaller than we would suspect. In his art, the photographer elevates the moment. His subjects, while being caught in the act, are turned into statues—emphasized by the slight under-view of most of the motifs. Even where bodies, arms and legs seem inextricably entwined, the sculptural impression never completely disappears.

Do the photographs tell the truth about the Oktoberfest? Of course, they do. They tell the truth of the photographer Volker Derlath. And he should know. After all, he has been an avid beer drinker since his youth. A moderate one, to be sure, but that also means he prefers a full stein to an empty one. Or as he puts it: “A beer stein feels like home to me.”
