Enniscorthy – New Year – New Brand?

What type of town is Enniscorthy? What is our 'brand'? As you approach Enniscorthy by any of the roads leading into town what sense do you get of our town, and its identity?

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns (ETT) has received feedback over recent years from the national tidy towns judges that when approaching Enniscorthy it is difficult to get a sense of what 'type' of town we are – they have asked: ‘What is Enniscorthy’s brand'?

ETT recently produced and carried out an online survey to get the views of the town’s own residents on what 'type' of town we consider Enniscorthy to be (or should be!) 130 responses were received and analysed by Enniscorthy Tidy Towns. The results make very interesting reading and are summarised in the three accompanying graphics on this page.

The approach roads don’t give a sense of our town.

70.8% of respondents (92 of 130) do not get a sense of the town whether approaching from the north, south, east or west.

The main overall branding suggested by the survey is that of a historic/heritage town, with 87 out of 130 (67%) of respondees ‘voting’ for this. Based on that result and the strong showing of the River Slaney, Enniscorthy’s branding should therefore be along the lines of a ‘Historic Rebel Town on the Slaney’. Patrick appointed Peace Commissioner The Minister of State with responsibility for International Law, Law Reform and Youth Justice Niall Collins has formally appointed Patrick Higgins as a Peace Commissioner for Co. Wexford.

Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, John O’Donoghue, and was widely respected for her integrity, fairness, and dedication until her passing in 2020.

Mr. Higgins’ appointment reflects his longstanding commitment to community service and civic engagement within the county. He will now undertake the statutory duties associated with the role, including witnessing signatures, taking statutory declarations, and supporting members of the public in a range of legal and administrative matters.

Speaking on his appointment, Patrick Higgins said he was honoured to carry forward his mother’s legacy.

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns award winners 2025 Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Chairperson Jonathan Hughes welcomed the large crowd to the their awards ceremony on 5th December 2025 at the Riverside Park Hotel to honour and acknowledge the marvellous work being done in the town by amazing individuals, businesses and communities.

Jonathon said, “This night is the highlight of our events calendar as we get to give something back to the wonderful people, businesses, volunteers, schools, and community groups that make our town the wonderful place it is!

“Retaining gold this year in the Tidy Towns Ireland competition would not be possible without community collaboration.”

District Chairperson Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy, Councillors Pat Kehoe and John O’Rourke, and Senator Cathal Byrne for attending, and the many volunteers and prizewinners.

Cllr Murphy congratulated all saying how important their work and dedication is to the town and how it uplifts everyone living here. She was lavish in her praise saying, ‘It is difficult enough to win a gold medal but to retain it for the second year is no mean feat. To anyone talking down Enniscorthy, I say you must be walking around with your eyes closed such has been the progress and improvement of our townscape over the past few years.

Keep doing what you are doing and the Council will help you in any way it can.’

TD slams mental health failings A Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow-Wexford has slammed the HSE for failing to provide a mental health crisis unit in Co. Wexford even though over 1,000 people presented to Wexford General Hospital’s A&E in a mental health crisis between January and October 2025.

Calling out the government’s lack of consideration for the people of Co. Wexford, Deputy Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin says these stark figures speak for themselves: “It is frightening to know that over the past 5 years, Wexford’s Accident and Emergency Department has seen 5,105 patients presenting in a mental health crisis. What is terrifying is that these five thousand people had no specific mental health care provided to them locally. Without a specific mental health unit, how can we ensure patient safety and care?”

“In my office we receive far too many reports of patients being referred to the Department of Psychiatry in Waterford University Hospital, who are discharged or refused services within a couple of hours because of a lack of staff or patient space.

Due to this we sought information from the HSE through a parliamentary question, though I never expected to receive such frightening figures in their response.”

Our plan is based on fairness, access to high quality local services, early intervention, prevention, and suicide reduction. We would ensure parity of esteem between mental and physical health, and that mental health is seen as an all-of-government priority.”

“We need to move away from decades of crisis management and underinvestment to community-based, proactive care.

This would need to be backed up by multi-annual funding, long-term planning, and workforce planning. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have paid lip service to mental health and wellbeing but have failed to deliver on the promises of Vision for Change and Sharing the Vision. The result is that mental health services are in a state of emergency. Funding has been stagnant, reform has been stalled and waiting lists have reached crisis point.”

Enniscorthy’s Niamh wins national media award Congrats to Enniscorthy’s Niamh Devereux who was among the winners at the Mental Health Media Awards 2025 announced last month at a special ceremony in Dublin.

The awards recognise excellence in Irish media coverage of mental health issues across all platforms. They celebrate journalists, producers, editors, content creators, and contributors whose work improves public understanding of mental health, challenges stereotypes, and fosters informed discussion.

‘Everyone’s home is their castle’ Affordable Housing information launch in Enniscorthy Castle

Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy Municipal District Cllr. Barbara-Anne Murphy joined the elected members from the Enniscorthy Municipal District last month in Enniscorthy Castle to launch an affordable housing information event in advance of the upcoming application portal launch later this month.

A total of 16 affordable A-rated homes are to be delivered in the ‘Cnoc Na Gréine’ scheme, which is the fourth affordable housing project launched in Co. Wexford and the second in Enniscorthy during 2025. The development which is being constructed by Anthony Neville December 16th 2025, Enniscorthy Castle.

Homes in partnership with Wexford County Council, will provide new homes for sale via Wexford County Council’s local authority affordable purchase scheme.

Speaking at the event, the Cathaoirleach of the Enniscorthy District, stated, ‘They say everyone’s home is their castle and where better to host tonight’s housing event other than this magnificent amenity which was a fortress, a battleground and a home, right in the heart of Enniscorthy.

The 16 homes will be made available to eligible buyers through the Local Authority Affordable Purchase Scheme, which is managed by Wexford County Council.

Applications will be accepted via an online portal which will go live on Wednesday 21st January 2026 at 12pm.

With the application of government supports and equity contributions, prices for the affordable purchase homes will start from €199,000, with buyers able to get support through the Government’s Help to Buy Scheme. Information for the housing scheme is available on the affordable housing section of Wexford County Council’s website.

VINEGAR HILL New seating has been installed. Design and content work on new Heritage Interpretive panels is under way. Parking and access improvements to Vinegar Hill are being investigated by Wexford Co. Council (WCC). €40,000 in government grant funding was awarded some weeks ago to Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) for signage and laneway improvements. The Enniscorthy East Community Development Association believes it has identified a site that could be used to allow access to the Hill for buses etc, and could potentially house a new welcome centre/ coffee shop/toilets, etc and have contacted EMD officials about it.

park includes pedestrian linkages to both the Main Street via a set of concrete steps and a pathway/ramp to the Dunnes Stores side. Additional public lighting has been installed. A valuation on the site has recently been received in the order of €280,000. Wexford County Council is committed to the long-term development of the site on a commercial basis; and it will be placed on the open market. It is expected that any development would take several years to come to fruition.

ST JOHN’S COMMUNITY WELLBEING & ACTIVITY GARDEN The official launch by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD took place on 2nd September 2025. This green space is now a vibrant community hub that is safe, accessible and welcoming to all. In recent weeks, a new walking route around St. John’s Community Hospital campus has been officially opened.

Phase 1 – Bridgeworks. This phase of the project will include the construction of the new River Slaney Bridge, the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge, and the construction of a new pedestrian bridge in the town centre. Public consultation on the preferred option for Phase 1 took place late last year. An application for planning approval for Phase 1 is to be submitted in Q3 2026.

ENNISCORTHY TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION PROJECTS Market Square Project: The Part 8 process for the Market Square project was concluded on 9th Sept. 2024, with the Council approving the scheme with amendments to address matters raised during the public consultation process.

The design of the scheme will be amended to reflect the outcome of the Part 8 process, and to have everything in order for upcoming grant funding calls.

Castle Quarter Project: Preliminary design work on the Enniscorthy Castle Quarter project is ongoing. An initial concept design was presented in December 2024 for review. An application for Ministerial Consents for the project, given its proximity to a National Monument, has been successfully obtained. Planning stage design is now at an advanced stage and it is proposed to launch a Part 8 process for the Castle Quarter project shortly. The Castle nightclub has been acquired and discussions are ongoing with other landowners to acquire further lands required for the project. Ground Investigation works are currently ongoing to inform archaeological and structural engineering considerations.

Templeshannon Regeneration Project: Procurement documents are being prepared in to order to establish a multi supplier framework for consultancy services. The framework is to use the Enniscorthy Town Centre projects (Templeshannon and Market Square) as the initial contract award in the establishment of the framework. This will be advertised later this month. The design team for Templeshannon will be required to develop the conceptual plan presented to EMD members in April 2025.

Officials from the UDRF section of the DHLGH visited Enniscorthy on 17th September to view the three Enniscorthy TC project sites. WCC is awaiting a pending URDF funding call to make a grant application for all three projects.

The three projects can only proceed if WCC is successful is securing government URDF funding.

ENNISCORTHY CCTV A total of 22 CCTV cameras are being installed at different locations within Enniscorthy Town which have been agreed with An Garda Siochana. The scheme is expected to act as a deterrent to crime and anti-social behaviour, improve public safety, assist emergency services when investigating incidents, and assist the Local Authority in the management of public areas for the wellbeing of the town. Civil and electrical works are now complete. Other works are continuing.

Bunclody CCTV Project: Updated Garda Vetting Forms were requested from the Garda Commissioner’s office. Awaiting authorisation from the Garda Commissioner.

ENNISCORTHY SPORTS HUB A contractor, Kevin Thorpe Ltd, is now working on the second phase (sports equipment storage area, open space area, changing rooms, toilets, showers, and a small office) of the Sports Hub. The project should be complete by this coming September. The second phase has been made possible through investment of €450,000 by The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Wexford Co. Council providing funding of €150,000.

ENNISCORTHY NORTH BUSINESS DISTRICT (Old Dublin Road) Some works have been carried out in recent years on the Enniscorthy North Business District (Old Dublin Road) where over 2,000 people currently work.

An application for further funding was submitted to the National Transport Authority for the active travel elements of the masterplan for the area but no funding has been forthcoming to date.

MURPHY FLOODS SITE This newly opened carpark adds 37 carparking spaces for the town. The car-

ENNISCORTHY FLOOD RELIEF SCHEME The Scheme is now proceeding on a phased basis.

Phase 2 – Flood Relief Works. This phase of the scheme will include the construction of the remaining flood relief measures for the town. The next steps are: Assess alternative design options in detail and shortlist these for consultation. Identify the preferred scheme to be brought forward for planning. Decide the appropriate planning route. Prepare planning documents and submit for planning approval.

The Scheme has a total approved budget of €51m approx. On completion, it is expected to protect 326 properties – 159 homes and 167 businesses.

BUNCLODY PARK A Stage 2 Natura Impact Statement, plans and particulars were submitted to An Bord Pleanála under Section 177AE. The Board was satisfied that the proposed development would not adversely affect the integrity of the European Site (the Slaney River Valley Special area of Conservation) in view of the Site’s conservation objectives. The application was approved with conditions at the end of February 2025. WCC Property Section has signed contracts with the landowner to acquire lands for this project.

PAIRC NA GABHAR BUNCLODY A revised plan for Pairc Na Gabhar has been drawn up. The proposed development will now proceed to Part 8 Planning.

RAFTER STREET PEDESTRIANISATION New recessed bollard mounts and bollards have been installed with a facility for the Emergency Services to have access. EMD is now strictly enforcing the pedestrianisation. New signage has been erected stating current byelaw times – between 10.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. The possibility of extending the pedestrianisation hours to cover Saturdays and Sundays will be looked at.

ENNISCORTHY TRAILS Works are ongoing on design and planning to extend the existing town trails network to link to the Ringwood and Borodale trails.

COLUMBARIUM WALL Tender documents are being prepared for the installation of a Columbarium Wall in Enniscorthy Lawn Cemetery.

RINGWOOD Wexford Local Development has been awarded €40,000 in government funding to resurface the entrance lane to Ringwood.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS Two new pedestrian crossings are being put in place at the top of Wafer Street, Enniscorthy.

BLACKSTAIRS Wexford Co. Council has been awarded almost €50,000 to fund a feasibility study for a walking and cycling trail connecting Bunclody, Kiltealy, Killanne, Templeduigan and Ballywilliam.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK PHASE 2 Tobin Consulting Engineers were appointed to provide technical consultancy services for this project to service upper sites at ETP. Site investigations are complete, and design work is near completion. It is anticipated the tender for construction works will be advertised later this month.

Bake sake to aid Gaza

Well done to the parishioners of Enniscorthy and Monart Union of Parishes in Co. Wexford whose recent bake sale and coffee morning raised over €2,500 for its Gaza appeal.

Rosslare Strand Christmas Swim raises €5,000 for Day Care Minibus at Tagoat More than 300 supporters in buttoned-up long coats, scarves, and Santa caps for protection against the cold biting wind, watched as 200 swimmers comprising near-naked spouses, children, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents dashed into the sea at Rosslare Strand on Christmas Day. It was all a quick dip to raise funds for a new €75,000 minibus with lift and steps for St. Mary’s Day Care Centre at Tagoat.

The thunderous sound of the theme music of “Hawaii Five-O” hinted that everyone should get ready. Then MC, Ray Flynn, supported by his assistants Eleanor and Lorna, pressed a bell to tick down the seconds to the start at precisely midday.

The traffic ground to gridlock on the Station Road while families on foot, handholding children, battled to reach the spectacle on time.

Like horses at Cheltenham, away down the beach ran the shivering, scantily clad swimmers, tiptoeing gingerly across the stony beach and dived into the cold waves of the Irish Sea. Like the

same horses, they galloped out of the cold sea faster than they ran into it.

Pale, shivering torsos and awkward white legs emerged in minutes into healthy skins full of endorphins, neurotransmitters of great feelings, and hearty laughter.

A team from the Coast Guard, another team from the Order of Malta, and members of An Garda Siochana watched out for anyone who might go under with the shock of going into the cold waves.

Staff and volunteers of St Mary’s Day Care Centre in Santa hats and armed with buckets to collect donations, also doled out soup, mulled wine, and chocolates to swimmers and supporters.

This year to mark the 40th year since the founding of the Rosslare Christmas Swim, St Mary’s Day Care Centre offered the first 100 swimmers to register a commemorative plaque depicting a lighthouse and made from locally sourced slate, all beautifully completed by the centre’s own staff and volunteers.

The annual Rosslare Christmas swim was founded by Fr John O’Reilly, Michael Healy and Alan Power.

The event was in danger of going under twenty years ago, but on the initiative of retired Fleet Street veteran, Patrick Skillen, known as the “High King of Ireland”, and five or six other local people, it got up and running again.

Siobhán Murphy, from Piercestown, and Bridget Browne, a native of Oulart, told us that the Rosslare Christmas Swim this year raised roughly €5,000 for the ‘Bus Fund’ to go towards buying the new minibus for the Day Care Centre.

The centre with a part-time staff of manager, nurse, and two or three general part-time staff, caters for 35 people coming mainly from the Harbour, Lady’s Island, Killinick, and Tomhaggard. The fund currently stands at €35,000. Now says the day centre website, “We must drive on with our fundraising initiatives until we reach our target of €75,000.”

Amnesty Wexford – defending human rights Founded in the 1990s, Amnesty International Wexford Group is one of eight Amnesty groups around Ireland contributing to that organisation’s tireless work in defending human rights all over the world.

This friendly and energetic group of local people holds monthly meetings at 6.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month in the lobby/coffee dock in Whites of Wexford hotel. They raise local awareness about human rights, organise events and stalls and film nights, fundraise, and campaign by letter-writing and lobbying.

In memory of the late Philip Reck St Mary’s CBS, Enniscorthy, hosted its annual Philip Reck Bursary presentation on 11th December 2025. The late Philip was a past pupil of St Mary’s CBS, a highly qualified agricultural scientist, and a respected employee of Cooney Furlong who were represented at the event by Wally Furlong.

Enniscorthy CBS Principal Brendan O’Sullivan and Philip’s brother Michael both spoke movingly at the ceremony fondly remembering the late Philip whose knowledge and contribution to agriculture is well documented, but for the Enniscorthy CBS school community it’s words like gentleman, kindness, and generosity that come to mind. So the school is delighted every year to be able to honour Philip’s memory and, thanks to the generosity of the Furlong family, it can support past students to follow in Philip’s footsteps and contribute to the world of agriculture. Philip had a vision that farmers should be

educating farmers and that “every day is a school day”.

This year’s recipients are Tomás Mernagh and Ouen Redmond, friends and school colleagues since they were five years old, and who have both commenced agricultural apprenticeships, and will no doubt continue Philip’s legacy and make a significant contribution to the world of agriculture.

The bursary is worth a sizeable €2,500 per year and is administered by a dedicated committee within the school. The commitment of Josie Foley to the success of the bursary awards, and her continuing positive contribution to the school community since her retirement some years ago, was acknowledged

by Mr O’Sullivan at the awards presentation.

A special Live Crib Words & Pics by Maria Nolan Sunday 7th December was a wet and miserable one but there was plenty to do in the lead up to an Enniscorthy Christmas.

Over the festive period I like to attend many events in Enniscorthy and one of my annual favourites is the Live Crib and Family Christmas Event at the IFA Centre.

This festive gathering has become a wonderful annual tradition, bringing families, neighbours, and local organisations together while raising muchneeded funds for St. Patrick’s Special School in Enniscorthy.

It is uplifting to see the fascination children have for the animals as they got up close and personal with cows, horned sheep, floppy eared rabbits, and the tiny, shy, miniature horse that everyone wanted to stroke.

Such a lovely idea bringing the crib to life for the children and giving them the

opportunity to see farm animals that they may not otherwise see.

The big man himself Santa was of course waiting inside to hand out the presents and then it was into the big hall where entertainment was provided by Martina Leacy’s very gifted dancers, who we were told would be performing in Disneyland in 2026, how wonderful and well deserved is that, there is no doubt that they will be excellent ambassadors for the town.

They were followed by June Cunningham’s Sean Nos Dancers who delighted the audience with reels and energetic brush dances.

All proceeds from the afternoon go to a most worthy cause – St. Patricks Special School.

Wishing Enniscorthy’s Naoise every success on the London stage Naoise on stage at the National Theatre London.

Professional actor Naoise Dunbar from Enniscorthy is currently performing at the National Theatre in London in a production of Playboy of the Western World which will run until February 28th, 2026. He shares the stage with well known names such as Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls, Bridgerton), Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls) and Marty Rea (Druid Theatre). Naoise plays the part of Jimmy Farrell and is also understudy for the Playboy, played by Eanna Hardwicke.

Naoise trained at the Lir Academy and has enjoyed great success over the past few years, appearing on the Abbey stage in Tartuffe and The Great Hunger, and Lovesong at the Gate Theatre. He has also appeared in numerous productions with theatre companies such as Druid, Fishamble, and Livin Dred.

Naoise's proud parents Annette and Michael were involved in amateur drama with Enniscorthy Theatre Group in the group's heyday in the 1990s. Michael is still heavily involved in local theatre and musicals and he himself has won an All-Ireland Best Actor award. Michael will be starring in Blackstairs Mountain Theatre's production of The Salvage Shop in Enniscorthy starting at the end of this month. n

It was a very busy and productive year for the Eastside Community Development team.

The Shannon Way project was launched in conjunction with our committee in the Spring of this year and was a major boost for the area. At the official launch of the project in July, parts of the Shannon never looked so well. Planters and hanging baskets were abundant bringing a dash of colour to the area. New shrubberies were planted along some of the green spaces and pathways and laneways were cleared to make access easier and safer.

Great credit is due to John Murphy, project co-ordinator and to the Enniscorthy Community Alliance who had the vision to apply for and to oversee the grant funding.

Santa’s warm welcome in New Ross

New Ross Municipal District is delighted with its first-ever Christmas Art Competition for local primary schools, with hundreds of colourful and imaginative entries bringing festive cheer to the town.

Cathaoirleach of New Ross Municipal District Cllr John Dwyer extended heartfelt thanks to every primary school that participated and to the pupils who poured their creativity into capturing ‘The Meaning of Christmas’, the theme for the Art Competition.

The competition was divided into four age-based categories (Junior & Senior Infants, 1st & 2nd Class, 3rd & 4th Class, and 5th & 6th Class), with one lucky overall winner having the honour of switching on the lights alongside Santa Claus at the town’s Christmas Lights Switch-on event, which took place at 5pm on Saturday 29th November 2025.

The South East – not on track?

The South East on Track group has been in touch with the Slaney News about the government’s recently annouced national transport plan.

The group believes the government’s announcement last month of the Sectoral Investment Plan for Transport includes many welcome developments, including the commitment to invest between €500m to €1bn in reactivating the Western Rail Corridor between Athenry and Claremorris.

However, the group says, “Since 2000, new rail has been constructed to support development around four of Ireland’s five cities. Only Waterford and the South East are left behind – having had a reduction in rail infrastructure due to the unnecessary closure of the WexfordWaterford rail line during the Financial Crisis in 2010. The line has continued to be maintained by Iarnród Éireann, while its reactivation is backed at European level by the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and nationally by the Strategic Rail Review.

Yet, despite this strong policy support, investment for the re-opening of this key rail link has not been secured for the South East, in contrast to the progress achieved in the West where elected rep-

resentatives successfully championed the restoration of their rail corridor. This highlights a clear imbalance in rail development and future-proofing across the regions.

It is disappointing that the infrastructure deficit facing the South East and Waterford City will persist for several more years. We are calling on elected representatives across our region to prioritise the reactivation of the Wexford–Water-

Wexford Co. Council gender pay gap Last month Wexford County Council published its Gender Pay Gap Report, highlighting the percentage difference between what men and women are paid on average in the organisation, irrespective of roles or levels.

The 2025 report shows a Gender Pay Gap of -3.08 mean and -7.85 % median.

This figure reflects the fact, on average, females are paid 3.08% more than males. The Median Gender Pay Gap shows that the median rate of pay for females is 7.85% higher than the median rate of pay for males.

Employers with more than 50 employees in Ireland are required to publish their gender pay gap data before the end of 2025 and within five months of their reference date. Wexford County

Council and all local authorities in the country have 30 June 2025 as the reference date.

Commenting following the publication of the report, a Council spokesperson said: “We are committed to fostering and maintaining an open and inclusive workplace community at Wexford County Council and to addressing any workplace barriers to equality. Our employees have equal opportunities for recognition and career development and are treated fairly and equitably. Many equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives and supports are already in place, and we will continue to work in this area.”

This month Sustainable Enniscorthy says: New Year, Volunteer!!

Enniscorthy is a town full of charm and character. For those who call it home, we should all share a pride in its great people, scenic walks, history, the breathtaking views of the river Slaney and Vinegar Hill. These are treasures that many other towns would envy. We are also lucky that Enniscorthy boasts a vibrant arts and music scene, filled with gifted individuals, making for lots of locally produced entertainment.

We are also fortunate to have numerous community-focused groups, whose dedicated volunteers invest their time working toward positive change, often through small, everyday actions.

For the past few years Sustainable Enniscorthy has been one of these groups and takes pride in working hard with a small number of volunteers to increase sustainability across the town.

However, throughout our work we have noticed that a frustrating narrative has emerged, suggesting that Enniscorthy is a town in decline. This perception is simply not accurate. Enniscorthy is not deteriorating; it is experiencing a period of transition, much like countless other towns and cities around the world. The presence of vacant shopfronts is not a uniquely local issue but it is a symptom of changes driven by the rise of online shopping and changing shopper behaviours.

Focusing on Opportunities Instead of focusing on the number of empty shops, consider how lucky we are to have so many local businesses.

Instead of lamenting about parking, there is value in recognising that walking slightly further from the carpark encourages people to explore, discover new businesses, and experience all the town has to offer.

What Enniscorthy truly needs is a shift in attitude. It is time to take pride in our town. Responsibility for the town’s well-being cannot rest solely with the council or a small number of volunteers. It’s up to everyone to take simple actions that can have a significant positive impact.

Building a Community of Action Change requires more than discussion; it calls for concrete action. This year when you are making New Year resolutions maybe instead of giving up something you could take some positive actions for our town and get involved in your community!! Which is also great for your mental health and our local economy.

There are also some simple steps you can take:  Shop local where you can.  Join a local community group or help out with specific local activities or events.  Help keep your local area tidy – even just outside your house!  Focus on the positives when posting about our town on social media.

The future of Enniscorthy is not something to observe passively; it is a shared responsibility. The town is beautiful, historic, and culturally rich.

By getting involved, supporting one another, and working together, Enniscorthy can become a town that truly reflects the strengths and spirit of its people.

I would encourage people with a few hours to spare a week or month to reach out to any community group, club or organisation – you won’t regret it. One of the best things about volunteering is you do it when it suits you.'

Sadie elected to national board Sadie Harpur, the Wexford-based author of the highly-praised book The Hidden World of a Foster-Girl, has been elected to the board of the Irish Foster Care Association. Sadie herself has expressed her pleasure at receiving such an honour as it gives her the opportunity to use her experience as both a foster-child and a foster-parent for the benefit of others.

Harpur’s book, written with Jackie Hayden, the Hot Press music writer, traced her life as a Foster-Girl through turbulent periods of high anxiety. Suffering from learning difficulties from undiagnosed dyslexia, she was described as mentally below average, and suffered bouts of depression, suicidal thoughts and was repeatedly bullied. She endured self-harming, violent outbursts, zero selfesteem, and the suicide of her muchloved foster-brother Gary.

The publication of The Hidden World of a Foster-Girl generated coverage in the local and national media. Harpur featured on a Fostering panel as part of the Write

By The Sea book festival and was a guest of honour at the Irish premiere of Sound of Hope, a film dealing with the issue of fostering in the USA. She was also invited by the Lord Mayor of Dublin as his guest speaker to a group of care-workers at the Mansion House and recorded several podcasts, including one for the Irish Foster Care Association.

The Irish Foster Care Association is the national organisation that supports foster families and the wider fostering community. Established in 1981, the organisation’s primary objective as an organisation is to promote excellence in foster care by: Promoting partnership between everyone involved in foster care to work for, and in the best interests of the child in care.

Providing support and learning opportunities for persons involved in foster care in Ireland.

Creating a greater public awareness of and promoting foster care in Ireland.

Advocating for excellence for all involved in foster care.

Representing its members is core to IFCA’s work.

Sadie Harpur lives with her family in Gorey, Co. Wexford, where she now works locally as an SNA. Her book was written with the assistance of best-selling author Jackie Hayden, also a resident of Co. Wexford. n

Remembering Paolo one year on Paolo Fresilli, the late proprietor of the always excellent Via Veneto restaurant in Enniscorthy, is fondly remembered by his family one year on...

A year has gone by since Paolo’s passing. We are in disbelief that it’s been an entire year. A whole year without his guiding hand, without his input on the weekly specials, without his snarky comments about modifications to his dishes, without his laughter filling the room.

Myself and Asia threw ourselves in our work, and, honestly, it has never been busier. We know Paolo would have never wanted to see us down, that he would have wanted us to carry on, but it is also a harsh reminder that he is not here to give his input for any issue we may bump into, big or small. We continue to make him a part of any occasion or milestone, and we know he is here with us in spirit. People have often told us that they feel Paolo’s presence in the restaurant, which warms our hearts, because the restaurant and Paolo are one. Without him, I do not know that we would have ended up in Enniscorthy and built what we have had for nearly the past twenty years. Paolo was our rock, and he will always be.

We cannot thank everyone in our Via Veneto family enough for all of your kind words and support throughout this year. It really means a lot, especially to know how many lives Paolo has touched.

We look forward to seeing you.... to celebrate Paolo and the man and father he was (which is exactly what he would have wanted – for us to find an excuse to raise a glass and drink in his honour!)

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to every single one of you.

Here’s to our beloved Paolo.

LOOKING AHEAD! Movie Reviews by Kyle Walsh 

I’m going to do something completely different for this month – I’m going to write about my most anticipated movies for 2026.

2025 for me was not good at all. A handful of good movies and a lot of rubbish.

I feel the experience of going to the cinema has diminished in the last couple of years unfortunately. There are many reasons why!

The price to go to watch a movie is extraordinary and when you add your popcorn and sweets and drinks, you’re talking the bones of €70 for a couple to watch a movie. Then you have streaming services and the fire stick where you can sit in the comfort of your own home and watch all the latest releases just a couple of weeks after being in the cinema. Then we have to put up with the fools who pay their money to go watch the movie and all they do is scroll through their phones with the light of the phone in the audience’s eyes that are actually there to watch the movie. If they’re not doing that they are up and down to the bathroom or talking and laughing out loud. There seems to be no control over this misbehaving. It takes away from the experience and I know some people have stopped going because of these matters. Then people wonder why eventually cinema will be a thing of the past. Cinema across the globe is losing big money.

Most of the top cinema chains in the USA are in serious trouble financially. AMC cinema in the USA lost hundreds of millions of dollars this year alone.

This year I hope Hollywood wakes up and start delivering movies that get ass on seats in the cinema before it’s too late. So here’s to hoping. This is my list for the top 10 most anticipated movies of 2026.

Project Hail Mary: I never read the book but from what I’ve heard it’s supposed to be a great read. This film is based on the book. Ryan Gosling stars in it. All I know about this movie is that the sun is dying and Gosling is some kind of scientist and is sent on a solar mission to save the earth with a sidekick friend who is an alien.

Disclosure Day: This is a welcome back for Steven Spielberg, for me the greatest ever movie director. He is taking us on another sci fi movie about aliens. Trailer looks great so I’m really excited for this. I’m very intrigued.

The Social Reckoning: This is the sequel to the great Social Network. This time David Fincher is not directing. But it’s in very capable hands. Written and directed by the brilliant Aaron Sorkin. I’m expecting a very

fast paced, snappy dialogue with great acting and direction movie. I would not rule out awards for this.

The Adventures of Cliff Booth: This film is based on the Brad Pitt character from the Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Pitt is back as Cliff Booth. With David Fincher directing and Tarantino writing it. With the three of them on the project it should be a really good film. It’s one I’m looking forward to.

Godzilla Minus Zero: This is a sequel to the greatest Godzilla movie ever made. Godzilla Minus One. If it’s even half as good as the original we are in for a treat. Can’t wait for this one.

Werwulf: Robert Eggers directs this so expect plenty of atmosphere and tone.

This will be creepy and unsettling. I love monster movies so I am looking forward to this but I was left disappointed with his last movie Nosferatu. Hopefully I will love this one.

Dune Messiah: The first two Dune movies are cinematic masterpieces and I really hope this one will be too. If it’s even half as good this could become one of the greatest trilogies ever made. I’m expecting massive things from this movie.

Avengers Doomsday: This is the most important movie in the MCU since the original Avengers. MCU has fallen of a cliff for a long time now so let’s hope they will be back with a bang with Robert Downey Junior back as Doctor Doom and Chris Evans back as Captain America. No room for failure. Let’s get the MCU back where it belongs.

The Odyssey: This is my most anticipated movie of the year. Christopher Nolan at the helm. The cast is out of this world. All filmed on Imax cameras.

The mythology of the Odyssey. I really feel we could be in for something very special with this movie. I can’t wait for this.

Digger: Tom Cruise is Digger. It’s a dark comedy and that’s all I know about it. I can’t wait for this as I am a big Cruise fan. It’s good to see him do something completely different rather than another action film. This time he gets to show off his acting talents hopefully.

So that’s it folks, that’s my top ten most anticipated movies for 2026.

Let’s hope it will be a good year for cinema. I would also like to say a big Happy New Year to all the readers of my reviews, I really appreciate all of you. See ye at the cinema!

An invitation to Wexford’s artists

Cow House Studios, Rathnure.

Cow House Studios and Creative Places Enniscorthy (CPE) are once again partnering in 2026 to offer artists in Wexford a sublime residential opportunity at the renowned Cow House Studios.

Date of Residency: 02-08 March 2026.

Deadline for artists to apply: Sunday 11 January 2026.

Cow House Studios in Rathnure, just outside Enniscorthy, is a world-class studio, offering artists nationally and internationally opportunity to reside, engage, and develop their personal practices. This residency, called ‘Into the Fold’, will bring together six creative practitioners at Cow House for one week. Applications are welcome from all creative practitioners, writers, filmmakers, visual artists, theatre makers, multimedia, musicians etc. This residency aspires to address a key principle of the Creative Places programme: connecting artists and local communities to inspire new ideas, collaborations, and a stronger, more cohesive creative environment.

Cow House Studios is named for its practical origins on the O’Gorman family farm, where for over 250 years the family

has lived and worked the land. Nestled at the foot of the scenic Blackstairs Mountains, it is located three miles from the village of Rathnure, Co. Wexford.

The vision of two artists, Rosie O’Gorman and Frank Abruzzese, fortified by the generosity of the O’Gorman family, has transformed the function of the Cow House from a beautiful stone structure used for bedding cows into a studio committed to facilitating contemporary visual arts practice.

Into the Fold is a residency for Wexfordbased artists running from 2nd to 8th March 2026. This residency is funded in total by CPE, at no expense to the artists.

Cow House Studios are keen to contribute to a thriving network of artists, developing avenues for sharing skills, ideas, and opportunities that will build solidarity among Wexford artists, lasting beyond the initial investment of the Creative Places programme.

This residency will support participants’ ongoing practice by providing critically valuable time and space to become immersed, research, and make new work.

Into the Fold aims to minimise distrac-

tions to ensure highly productive studio time. Additionally, this residency is intended to foster meaningful connections for Wexford artists into the future through shared meals, studio visits, and informal discussions.

January always feels like a fresh page in the gardening calendar. December was about slowing down, protecting what was already in the ground, and making space for wildlife while the garden rested. We planted bare-root trees, kept winter crops ticking over, and allowed ourselves to step back and reflect on the year that had passed. Now, as January settles in, the garden still looks quiet on the surface, but this is the month where the next growing season really begins in our heads.

One of the most valuable things you can do in January is plan. It sounds simple, but a bit of thought now saves a lot of hassle later. I like to start by looking at what I grew last year and asking myself what worked and what did not. From there, I decide what I actually want to eat this year. There is no point growing something just because it looks good if it never makes it into the kitchen.

Mark describes himself very much as a ‘hobby gardener’ who is not academically trained in horticulture. He started planting with very little knowledge a few years ago and that knowledge has now ‘mushroomed’! Mark loves sharing his passion for growing with our readers. is best suited. Some plants will be happier under cover in a greenhouse or tunnel, while others are better grown outdoors in open ground.

Sketching out your beds on paper helps you avoid overcrowding and makes crop rotation much easier to manage.

January is also the perfect time to give your greenhouse a proper clean. As the days slowly start to brighten, you want to make the most of every bit of light. Over winter, algae and grime build up on the glass or plastic and can block more light than you realise. A bucket of warm soapy water and a soft brush is all you need. Clean the outside first to let the light back in, then move indoors. Sweep out old leaves and compost, wipe down benches, and give pots and trays a wash. If you have had problems with pests or disease before, a light disinfectant on surfaces is worth the effort. A clean greenhouse creates a healthier space for young plants and makes sowing seeds later on much more successful.

While there is not much growing happening, January does offer a small treat in the form of forced rhubarb. If you already grow rhubarb, this is an easy way to get an early harvest. Forcing works by covering the crown to exclude light, which encourages the plant to send up tender, sweet stems earlier than normal. You can use a traditional forcing pot, an upturned bin, or even a large bucket. Place it over the crown and block out any light. In a few weeks, you will have pale pink stalks that are much sweeter than later harvests. It is a lovely reminder that even in winter the garden can still provide something fresh.

For anyone who does not yet grow their own food, January is a great time to think about how you might start. You do not need a large garden or expensive materials. A simple raised bed can be made from old pallets, timber offcuts, or even sturdy boards reclaimed from elsewhere. Place it somewhere that gets decent light, line the base with card-

board to suppress weeds, and fill it with a mix of topsoil and compost. If space is tight, containers are another good option.

Large pots, builders’ buckets with holes drilled in the bottom, or old crates can all be used to grow herbs, salads and even root veg.

January may not look busy in the garden, but it is one of the most important months of the year.

Planning, cleaning, and setting intentions now lays the groundwork for everything that follows.

Take it slow, enjoy the quieter days, and remember that every growing season starts long before the first seed is sown.

The catch-up Monday group really enjoyed a trip to the Wexford Opera House for Wexford Science Festival.

The Willow Dome is now in place created with the fabulous Sindy Offer.

We are grateful as always to Gillian O’Neill, Secretary at Enniscorthy Community Allotments (ECA), for keeping us updated with all the news and photos from this multi-award-winning facility in Enniscorthy...

We would like to wish all our followers, supporters and volunteers a very Happy New Year.

It has been a fantastic couple of months for the allotments.

The Oak tree project is coming along very well now, the pathway and bench at the Oak tree are now completed, a huge thank you to the very talented Mark Foran for his help with the bench. The Willow Dome is also now in place created with the fabulous Sindy Offer. We cannot wait to see this beautiful quiet space flourish over time. Thanks to Deryn O’Callaghan, Creative Places, for supporting this wonderful project.

We were delighted to win first place in the Best Community Project to Improve Infrastructure at the Wexford County Council Keep Wexford Beautiful awards 2025, in the Ferrycarrig Hotel in November.

We were also overjoyed to receive an award at the Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Annual Awards 2025 in the Best Community Area category. There was great praise on the night for the community efforts that happen within and around the allotments.

It was amazing to receive such feedback.

The Catch Up Monday group really enjoyed a trip to the Opera House for Wexford Science Festival. It was a wonderful morning connecting with like-minded people.

We are looking forward to planning and prepping for the new growing season ahead here in the allotments. We are also looking forward to another Nature Therapy workshop in February with the fabu-

lous Deirdre Commins. Nature therapy is an evidence-based practice that uses the outdoors to improve our sense of balance, presence, and inner calm. Nature Therapy is very calming and relaxing – a great way to connect with nature and like-minded people.

Our Catch Up Monday group will be back soon after our little break for the festive season. It is amazing to have such a beautiful space to meet and have a catch-up with a tea/coffee in the beautiful calm oasis that is our allotments. We have great plans for the coming year from art to day trips and absolutely everyone is welcome. 4 tablespoons butter divided 1 small diced onion 4 cloves minced garlic ½ cup frozen diced carrots 1 cup frozen green peas One broccoli cut into small pieces Salt and pepper to taste 3 cups cooked and chilled white rice – jasmine or short grain rice 3 tablespoons soy sauce 2 teaspoons sesame oil 2-3 eggs scrambled Green onions for garnish 6 pieces of streaky bacon

In a wok over high heat melt 2 tablespoons butter.

Add onions, garlic, carrots, peas, broccoli, salt and pepper. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until onions are translucent. Add remaining butter and continue to stir.

Grill bacon and chop.

Add rice, bacon, soy sauce, sesame oil. Toss together until all the rice is combined with the vegetables. Stir in eggs and green onions.

County Wexford Chamber launches Strategic Plan 2026–2028: A Bold Vision for Growth and Community

The Market Explorer Grant is open to small enterprises (with between 1 and 50 paid employees) that meet the following criteria: Operate as manufacturing or eligible internationally traded services businesses and are solvent as demonstrated in the financial statements supplied and have current tax clearance from Revenue.

Are not currently clients of Enterprise Ireland or IDA. Operate commercially and are established and trading for at least 12 months, registered, and carrying on activity within the area of the Local Enterprise Office.

Have demonstrated intention to internationalise i.e. have completed Export Accelerator or similar LEO Exporter Programme or have developed an inter-

Over €200,000 in grants for Wexford animal welfare Chippers Sanctuary, North Wexford SPCA, Seal Rescue Ireland, Ten Lives Cat Rescue, and Wexford SPCA are all set to benefit from €213,175 in government grants.

The grants were announced last month in recognition of the incredible work, dedication, and professionalism of animal welfare charities operating across the county, acknowledging also the challenges they face. The overall allocation is the highest ever awarded under the ‘Animal Welfare Grants’ Programme.

Minister James Browne TD, who is himself a cat owner, welcomed the grants for animal welfare charities in Wexford saying: “This is essential and well deserved grant funding for five brilliant local organisations in the county. I want to take this opportunity to genuinely thank the staff and all the volunteers in these organisations for their dedication to achieving the best possible outcomes to animals in their care.”

“I welcome just over €200,000 in funding for our animal welfare charities, who are doing so much and providing care which is very often unseen. Every single one of us have a duty to ensure that the animals in our care are minded properly, and if we see an animal being mistreated, that we report it immediately.”

The funding provided this year continues to reward those organisations that have a proven track record in rehoming, providing education to the public on animal welfare and guidance to prevent welfare problems in the future.

VET DIARY FOR JANUARY First of all I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year. It is the Chinese New Year coming up soon too and it is the year of the Fire Horse. Seemingly it is about being brave and bold and following your true heart’s desires. That might be some food for thought for the rest of the New Year resolutions that are fast feeding with the beginning of January.

One good resolution that might have some long-term benefits for your dog might be to adopt a few extras into their diet to keep them healthy and well.

Looking and listening to vets talking on nutrition for dogs, the more enlightened ones seem to agree that most of our regular dog foods come up short on various levels of nutrition. The first thing that needs to be considered is the digestibility of the food. It might say it has all the required nutrition but the dog might not be able to digest or absorb those nutrients easily.

Dogs generally love getting scraps from the table and often vets shun this practice. For me, I am in favour of it broadly with the provision that their regular food is reduced accordingly. Fasting dogs one day per week is a long-established practice with astute dog breeders and owners. Giving them a meaty raw bone that day or bone broth can have many health benefits in the long term as dogs are not designed to eat every day. Given the digestive tract a day off helps them in many ways.

There are several supplements that can be added to the regular diet that can have huge health benefits and one of these is Reishi Shiitake mushrooms. These are Japanese origin and have a wide range of nutrients present, improving nervous system, brain health, and preventing dementia in older animals.

Another excellent supplement that can help their joints is green lipped mussel. It contains many of the constituents needed for the upkeep of joint fluid and joint health.

Another food that you can easily obtain is some lamb or beef liver and give your dog a small piece a couple of times per week. It is an extremely nutrient dense food and contains a readily available source of iron, it is high in omega 3’s and is very appetising, my dogs love it and thrive on in too.

A supplement that we have used over the last number of years is called “Bioprep” and has upwards of 5,000 natural nutrients in it with no additives. It is great for convenience, for general well being, and excellent for older dogs to maintain their condition, coat and health.

These are your dogs’ New Year resolutions, so if you think you will follow up on none of your own, they’ll appreciate you doing this one for them this time round.

The latest Isuzu D-Max gets refreshed headlights, grille, bonnet and bumpers with new front air curtain designed to improve aerodynamics. The update sharpens its presence and gives the D-Max substantial kerb appeal. There are single cab and double cab variants, as well as three trims: L, LS and LSE.

On test was the D-Max LSE, which gets bi-LED headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels with a sporty dark grey finish, wrapped in Dunlop all-terrain tyres. There's plenty of accessories that can be added too, like optional sports bars.

Inside, the D-Max prioritises durability, though the finish is more upmarket than you might expect. Materials feel tough but good quality. The LSE’s standard leather upholstery, heated seats and automatic climate

Pricing for the Isuzu D-Max starts at €43,075 for the single cab including VAT, while double cabs start at €50,453. The LSE is priced at €56,666.

To conclude, the Isuzu D-Max LSE is built for hard work but brings just enough comfort and technology for smooth daily driving. It doesn’t match the Ranger or Hilux for power or polish, but it offers excellent build quality, solid offroad ability, and serious towing and payload capability.

If you’re looking for a dependable pickup with all the trimmings, the D-Max LSE is worth considering. n

SCHOOLS INVITED TO COMPETE FOR ‘IRELAND’S FITTEST’ TITLE

A call has gone out to schools in County Wexford, and elsewhere across the country, from wellknown Irish Olympian, sprinter David Gillick (pictured) who has teamed up with Fyffes once again in a quest to find ‘Ireland’s Fittest School 2026’.

Aimed at promoting the importance of exercise, fitness, and healthy eating amongst young people, a central feature of the programme will be a series of exercise routines – recorded by Gillick, alongside Irish fitness trainer, Sharon Flanagan – which competing schools can adopt as part of their PE curriculum and against which performance will be measured and tracked online.

Building on the success of the previous four years – and running for 8 weeks from January 26th – the 2026 competition will then see the top four schools from each province compete head-to-head across four live regional qualifier events in April.

The top school from Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster will then progress to May’s grand final, hosted by patrons Gillick and Flanagan, at which the prize package will include €8,000 worth of sports equipment.

Speaking at the launch, Fyffes head of marketing, Emma HuntDuffy, said: “Amongst schools nationwide, the level of interest in this competition continues to grow each year. We look forward to seeing more and more teachers and young pupils incorporating the exercise routines into their PE classes, as a fun and easy way to stay active and keep fit.”

Wexford – punching above our weight In a remarkable achievement two young Wexford boxers won medals at the recent European U17 Championship Finals held at the German Olympic Training Centre in Kienbaum, and contested by 369 boxers in total.

Sean Kelly of St Abbans/Kilmyshall BC won gold against Yiğit Keskin of Turkey in the 52kg weight division. While at 57kg Kalib Walshe of Wexford CBS secured silver against Daniel Fabi of Italy. n

A memorable evening in Wexford Under the guiding hand of Enniscorthy's Mick Abidoye, the ÉIRE Season Boxing Gala took place on 13 December 2025 at Whites Hotel, Wexford, marking a memorable evening dedicated to celebrating excellence in Irish boxing. The event brought together fighters, coaches, supporters, and sponsors to recognise outstanding achievements from the ÉIRE Season fighters throughout the year.

The gala proudly celebrated the dedication, discipline, and talent that continue to drive Irish boxing forward. ÉIRE Season would like to extend sincere thanks to its valued sponsors — Anthony Dobbs Electrical, Weather Seal Limited, and Ka-

County Convention 2025 Words & Pics by Maria Nolan December was a very busy month for Wexford GAA as it held its annual Convention on Monday 8th December at Whites Hotel Wexford.

After a very good news weekend for Wexford hurling there was yet more good news in store for the Wexford delegates to Convention.

The Leinster Club Senior and Junior Cups were guests of honour at Convention and many tributes were paid throughout the evening to both St. Martin’s and Davidstown clubs on their historic wins, with both clubs thanking delegates and everyone in Wexford for the flood of good wishes before and after the games.

There were 16 Motions on the Clár but the biggest applause of the evening came when the Ballygarrett Motion ‘Any player turning 18 on or after the 1st January of that calendar year will be eligible to play adult football and hurling’, was passed almost unanimously.

Buffers Alley’s Motion to increase the number of regraded players from 3 to 5 was defeated but a second Motion to allow for players to be regraded during the Adult Club Championship after thtree Rounds was passed.

A presentation on Wexford’s Strategic Plan 2026-2030 was made by Miceal Mahon and Diarmuid O’Keeffe outlining the perceived problems with Wexford GAA and detailing ways of correcting them going forward.

The Plan will be launched at the end of January 2026.

There was no contest for the Election of Officers as Kevin Doyle withdrew his nomination in favour of Miceal Mahon who is the new County Vice-Chair, all other officers being unopposed.

Several tributes were paid to outgoing Vice Chair Dermot Howlin who is stepping down from Wexford County Board after 38 years of dedicated and loyal service to throw his hat into the ring for the position of Leinster Council Treasurer.

‘Dermot has served in so many roles with County Board since 1987 that there are too many to mention, he has been a great servant of Wexford GAA operating with the utmost integrity and loyalty in every capacity’, County Chairman John Kenny said before making a presentation to Dermot for his years of service.

The highlight of the evening was the nomination of Leinster Council Chairman Derek Kent for President of the

GAA by Irish & Cultural Officer Tony Dempsey.

Tony was lavish in his praise for Derek describing him as ‘a hardworking, committed GAA man who served his county well as Chairman from 2016 to 2020 along with being a shrewd, accomplished, and experienced businessman, well known and liked not just in Wexford but around the country. A man of influence and worth’, according to Tony, who will make a most excellent President of the GAA. ‘This nomination is a fitting end to what has been a terrific weekend for Wexford and I wish Derek Kent the very best of luck,’ Tony concluded at the Convention to rapturous applause. n

Bellefield Pudding Run Words & Pics by Maria Nolan On St. Stephen’s Day for the past 18 years large numbers of family, friends, and teammates of the late Michael Foley have come together for the annual Pudding Run, leaving Bellefield GAA Complex at 11am and following a 10k route through the town out to Scarawalsh and back to Bellefield again.

The Pudding Run is a fundraiser for the Michael Foley Bursary Fund operated by one of his former teachers Josie Foley at Enniscorthy CBS, contributing to the further education of two worthy students every year.

This year’s Pudding Run had as always a great turnout as family and friends dusted off the Christmas cobwebs to come together at this special time of year to remember and rekindle old friendships and connections all in a good cause.

Influence of Taghmon people

New Journal is rich with writers and stories and The influences of the people of the midCounty Wexford village and parish of Taghmon of saints and scholars stretch around the world as shown in the new Journal of the Taghmon History Society, launched at Camross Hall.

A Taghmon designer of Batman’s Batmobile in America, a three-times Cheltenham winner in England, and three Benemerenti medals from the Pope in Rome, are just some of its many interesting articles.

This Journal takes the reader back to the 1800s and forward to the present. Count in Saint Fintan Munn (from 600 AD) and you’re back almost to the time of St Patrick. Saint Fintan’s Cross, drawn by Joseph Hunt, is on the cover.

The Journal starts and sets its scene with the life and times of the hugely popular Mairead Bennett née Carroll who writes lovingly and knowingly about her native village.

Her family, “The Carrolls of Taghmon” have been synonymous with the noble rural reputation of the village of Fairs and Mardi Gras and Mumming and baking bread for most of 100 years. Mairead became widely known from her many years working with ‘gentleman’ Tom O’Donnell, the then only chemist for many miles around south County Wexford.

Her father James Carroll and Margaret Roche from Blackhall married on 21 June 1938 and established their home on the Main Street, where they had a huge engine, a Burrell Double Compound Traction engine, which became known among farmers around the county as ‘the Carroll threshing set’.

Her uncle Jack moved to America following his marriage to Nancy Larkin from Enniscorthy. Jack worked for the Ford Motor Company in Detroit where he played a secret role in designing Batman’s Batmobile which later sold for four million dollars.

In contrast to the cheerful account of Mairead Bennett comes a sobering feature on ten years in Taghmon during the Famine times of 1840 to 1850. Her splendid article, with detailed references, accounts that Taghmon was, ‘the receptacle of almost all the evicted and pauper tenants of the surrounding districts’. She quotes an ‘Observer’ in the Wexford Independent of 1849, ‘It is glaringly too bad to have the pauperized village of Taghmon and the pauper district of the Mountain of Forth placed in the same division’.

Government ministers, councillors, civil servants, journalists, and the plain ordinary people of Wexford should take note of her findings and how their decisions can impact on their community. The prosperity of one village could be the death of another.

Kay Doyle goes back to pre-Famine times to write about St Garvan’s Church, Caroreigh, and the celebration of the 180th Anniversary of its founding. The current church replaced a smaller thatched Chapel of before 1845.

There are many more fascinating articles in this Journal. The recipients of the Benemerenti medals are named as Michael Waters of Chapel Street, Taghmon, honoured by Pope Benedict, Michael Walsh from Taghmon and Jack Stafford from Clonerane. Bishop Denis Brennan (now retired) presented the medals to them.

There is poetry too. One poem by Liam Byrne pays tribute to the late Tom Williams, of Williams Bakery, author of Cuculainn’s Son. Another poem titled The Incident by Margaret Galvin of Ireland’s Own and RTÉ

Taghmon Person of the Year is... Castle Vintage Club Michael Doyle, chairman, announced at the launch of the Taghmon History Society Journal and Calendar that the Taghmon Person of the Year is not a he or a she, but a club. The Castle Vintage Club has in 20 years raised more than €350,000 for various charities, through their vintage tractor runs and displays around the county.

radio renown, recalls the late John Condron witnessed by many local people, tragically falling to his death off the roof of the castle.

Progressively, the editors give Tom and Teresa Wickham space to stray outside the parish to put on the public record in the Journal, some of their collection of rare photographs of the development of the Killurin-Deeps bridge spanning Crossabeg and Glynn parishes across the River Slaney.

In another section, nineteen pages of black and white photographs give a wide-angle picture of the life and times of the entire community. The excellent photographs, sans captions, speak for themselves.

This is a heavy book in weight, in content, and in substance. Within two years, the voluntary 20-member history society committee have presented in 200 pages a valuable feast of fascinating pieces from the past and the present of the area and beyond.

Adding to the previous thirteen volumes, conveniently listed in the book, the entire collection forms a library of rich content and achievements written by some of the best writers in the county.

Michael Doyle, a broadcaster with South East Radio, is chairman of the committee, president is Paddy O’Reilly, May Buttimer is vice-chairman, Kay Doyle is secretary and public relations officer, Catherine Seery and Tom Wickham are joint treasurers, Liz Wickham is editor, Philip Devereux is photographer, and Paul Codd is Taghmon Town Council rep.

Wally O’Neill of Red Books launched The Journal of the Taghmon History Society Volume No 14, edited by Liz Wickham, and published by the Taghmon History Society.

Brian launches book in Oulart A new book by historian Brian Ó Cléirigh, ENCHANTED TO A STONE, is a fascinating read on the role of the de Lacy family of Oulart in the struggle for Irish identity and freedom from 1905– 1923. It traces the early stirrings of the revival of Irish consciousness in County Wexford and covers the broad sweep of the famliy’s activities at local, national and international level.

The title, Enchanted to a Stone, comes from the Yeats poem, Easter 1916, in Launch of Brian Ó Cléirigh’s book ‘Enchanted to a Stone’ in Oulart Community Centre on 3rd December 2025. L-R: John Dempsey, Breda Jacob (who launched the book) and Brian Ó Cléirigh.

which the stone is taken to symbolise the resolute constancy of the revolutionaries’ determination to retrieve independent sovereignty of Ireland while mainstream Ireland was preoccupied gaining Irish Home Rule within the Empire seeing that as the more practicable route to freedom.

The four de Lacy siblings, Mick, Ned, Larry and Honor (aka Annie) were all reared on a small holding and Larry gives us a description of what subsistence farming was like domestically in Ireland at that time. Out and about in historic Ferns Words & pics by Maria Nolan Archaeologist and historian Barry Lacey launched his beautifully titled book, Beneath the Ground of Kings and Saints, about the archaeology and history of Ferns, at The Thatch in Ferns last month.

Introduced by Catherine McPartlin, Ferns Heritage Project, she complimented Barry on his insightful look at the amazing history of Ferns Castle and thanked him for his interest and commitment to Ferns and surrounding areas.

The book, Barry explained, takes the reader through the prehistoric, medieval and early modern periods showing the various characteristics of each and the evidence that has been found for them in Ferns.

Beautifully illustrated with stunning photographs throughout, this is an impressive publication and would make a delightful gift for anyone interested in the history of Co. Wexford. n

Jane Austen’s 250th birthday celebrated at Enniscorthy Library Words & pics by Maria Nolan Enniscorthy Library issued an invitation to all to join with them in the Fiction Room on December 16th 2025 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birthday of one of the world’s most acclaimed female fiction writers, Jane Austen.

Being a fan since I first discovered the author as a teenager, I gratefully accepted, and enjoyed a most pleasant hour in the company of discerning friends who busied themselves with needlepoint, decoupage, and arts and crafts while discussing their favourite author.

I shared a trip that I had made to Bath several years ago to visit the Jane Austen Centre where it was possible to book Afternoon Tea with Mr. D’arcy.

Very well done to the staff of the Library for creating this most innovative drop-in Adult Event as all those present sipped tea from, of course, China teacups and enjoyed cookies with a difference – baked in the mould of both Jane and Mr. D’arcy, a most excellent touch as we relaxed in the would-be parlour expressing our preferences for Pride & Prejudice, Emma, Sense & Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion.

A most inventive way for readers to come together to deliberate and converse about a famous author and thank you to Patricia Keenan and her staff for providing us with the lovely occasion.

I would dearly love to see more of the same at the Library please.

For anyone interested, the Jane Austen Festival takes place in Bath from Friday 11th September to Sunday 20th 2026 featuring Regency-era events like balls, guided walks, and performances, and culminating in its famous Regency Costumed Promenade – I don’t know about you but it’s certainly on my bucket list – if I can find the right dress! n

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns volunteers are doing a lot of work at present on their anti-dog-fouling campaign including the use of stencils and spray paint to spray “Bag It, Bin It” messages on footpaths which are prone to dog fouling. Dog poo contains harmful bacteria, is unsightly, gets on shoes, buggies, wheelchairs etc and, of course, is a big problem for visually impaired people. The Tidy Towns group is pleading with dog owners to practise responsible dog ownership, pick up after your dog and bin that poo. n

Water funding The Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) Community Water Development Fund 2026 is now open for applications. It supports community groups to enhance the quality of local streams, rivers, lakes, and coast.

Key Details: Closing date 11:30pm on 20th January 2026.

Minimum grant award of €5,000 Medium size €5,000 to €25,000 Maximum grant award of between €25,000 to €40,000 or more, subject to procurement.

Types of projects eligible include: Awareness raising initiatives such as river clean-ups, biodiversity information boards, citizen science workshops, outdoor classrooms, rainwater harvesting, and enhancement of wetlands.

Preparation of local plans such as feasibility studies, habitat management plans, ecological surveys, and biodiversity action plans.

River and habitat enhancement works such as planting of native species and hedgerow, pollinator-friendly planting, river-bank stabilisation, fencing, and riparian buffer zones.

Landowners to be offered ‘hassle-free’ support to create more space for nature on their land

A Hare’s Corner.

The Hare’s Corner, an innovative biodiversity initiative coordinated by Burrenbeo Trust, in conjunction with Wexford’s Biodiversity Office, is being rolled out this year to landowners in County Wexford.

Inspired by the term ‘The Hare’s Corner’ – an old farming expression for an awkward section of a field which wasn’t intensively farmed and so was ‘left to nature’ – the aim of this project is to help create habitats that have proven benefits to biodiversity, climate-action, as well as to the wellbeing of participants.

The Hare’s Corner project offers landowners (private landowners, farmers, schools/community groups) ‘hassle free’ support to carry out simple but impactful actions for biodiversity such as creation of a wildlife pond, native mini-woodland, heritage mini-orchard, wildlife hedge, or bespoke ‘plan for nature’. This support is offered in the form of materials (native trees and heritage apple trees), micro-funding (e.g. machinery costs for pond digging), and specialist advice and guidance.

According to Lee Worrel, Hare’s Corner Coordinator at Burrenbeo Trust, “Landowners can apply for one or more biodiversity actions and participation in the Hare’s Corner involves no cost to, and minimal hassle for, the landowner. All we ask in return from beneficiaries is their commitment to act as ‘stewards’ of their own special Hare’s Corner.”

Places will be limited and preference is given to community groups and schools, though to avoid double-funding, farmers who are ACRES or NPWS Farm Plan Scheme participants are currently not eligible to apply.

The Hare’s Corner project in Co. Wexford in 2026 will be funded in part by the Local Biodiversity Action Fund (supported by the National Parks and Wildlife Service).

Applications opened on January 1st 2026 and stay open until 18th January 2026. Further calls may be made subject to available funding. If the call is oversubscribed then places may be offered on a first-come, first served basis.

Minister Browne announces opening of new barrier mitigation programme funding for Wexford New scheme to remove/mitigate barriers that obstruct fish passages in Wexford Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), with the support of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, has opened a new round of funding in the National Barrier Mitigation Scheme.

Examples of the types of barriers eligible for funding include:

This follows from a successful roll-out of the scheme earlier this year, in which €13.6 million was awarded to 103 projects across the country to address physical barriers in Irish waterways, such as dams, culverts and weirs that affect fish passage.

 Redundant structures or culverts disrupting water flow and habitats;

Seven Wexford projects to address the impacts of manmade barriers in our waterways were supported by the Department under the first round of the National Barrier Mitigation Programme (NBMP): Ballycarney Bridge, Old Ballyanne Bridge (Barrow), Rathvilly Weir, Bunclody Weir, Pallis Perched Culvert, Millpound Sluice and Pollmounty Sluice.

Applications must be led by a State Agency or Local Authority, but individuals or other groups can apply with IFI as the lead agency, following a successful Expression of Interest (EOI).

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD said: “I was proud to see Wexford rivers so well represented in the earlier funding announcement and I hope to see more under the next round.

“I wanted to ensure the continuation of funding of these really important barrier mitigation projects across Ireland. This work around barrier mitigation is about improving water quality, restoring river connectivity and improving fish migration in our waterways. We want the natural movement of fish in our rivers and waterways.

"I strongly encourage eligible organisations to engage with the Programme and take advantage of this funding opportunity.”

The NBMP will support projects from early planning and design to full construction and habitat restoration.

Local authorities such as Wexford County Council, and other agencies involved in the management of Irish water bodies, are encouraged to apply for this funding, as well as local angling groups or barrier owners.

The purpose of the funding scheme is to help remove or mitigate man-made barriers to fish passage in Irish rivers and streams, supporting IFI’s ongoing commitment to improving fish passage, restoring connectivity, and enhancing biodiversity in rivers and streams nationwide.

The scheme is funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

A new biodiversity action plan for river walk in Enniscorthy A Community Biodiversity Action Plan in relation to the Slaney River Walk in Enniscorthy was officially launched on 27th November 2025 at an event in the Riverside Park Hotel. The Plan has been produced for Enniscorthy Tidy Towns by the ecological consultant Faith Wilson.

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns (ETT) recycled 9,266 items from litter picks in 2025 which was just 64% of the total for 2024. The number of DRS (Deposit Return Scheme) items (cans and plastic bottles) recycled by ETT in 2025 was just over half (53%) of what it was in 2024 – evidence that DRS is helping. However, rubbish collection by ETT was up in 2025, 629 bags versus 488 bags in 2024.
