Enniscorthy’s Slaney Street is a huge asset to the town, particularly at this time of year with its canopy of colourful umbrellas, so it’s always great to see new and interesting small shops opening up there. Joanne Martin is celebrating the first birthday of her Witch Crafts premises on that street, and in recent weeks local artist Lar Joyce has opened up a shop exhibiting his own paintings as well as providing a framing service. It would be great to see some more unique shops follow their great example.

About a week ago we did a walk around the town photographing the remarkable floral displays and took some photos also of flower-adorned shopfronts. We published those photos on our Slaney News Facebook page – it’s well worth checking them out. Enniscorthy Tidy Towns is calling on all businesses, residents, and communities to do everything possible for the month of August as it’s possible the national Tidy Towns adjudicators will be about. A lick of paint, weeding outside your house/premises, and colourful window boxes and hanging baskets will go a long way to help Enniscorthy retain its gold status.

Shareclub Enniscorthy launch Enniscorthy Tidy Towns (ETT) is pleased to announce details of its 'Shareclub Enniscorthy – Reusable Cup Initiative 2026' which is an exciting circular-economy initiative to reduce single-use coffee cups in Enniscorthy which are a persistent litter item throughout the town.

This initiative is possible thanks to grant funding from Wexford County Council, and support from a green-focused Irish company called Shareclub.

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the financial and environmental benefits of reusable coffee cups. The project looks to increase the circulation of reusable cups in Enniscorthy, promote more circular-economy practices, and hopefully reduce the levels of singleuse-cup litter ETT encounters.

For using a reusable cup, a discount may be applied by participating outlets. cup litter they encounter on a daily basis.

For businesses: Single-use cups are costly, so promoting customers to reuse makes sense. Already, even in advance of the initiative being actively promoted, ten of the town's major outlets have expressed their intereast in signing up.

How does it work?

The Shareclub Enniscorthy project works on a deposit and return basis with no upfront cost to businesses. Enniscorthy Tidy Towns has secured grant funding to purchase a consignment of 10oz/300ml reusable cups which will be distributed to participating outlets.

Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium Memorial Night 17th August 2026 On Monday, 17th August 2026, a night of remembrance will be held at the Showgrounds (Y21 XP63) to remember all those who have passed through the doors of Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium and who helped create the atmosphere which is still present at the track today.

If you would like to remember and honour your loved ones by placing a plaque at the greyhound track, with all money raised going towards The Oak Ward, St John's Hospital, Enniscorthy, then please get in touch on 087 489 3859 as soon as possible and the Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium team will let you know what is involved. Best wishes to Lar Joyce Art It’s always great to see new businesses setting up in Enniscorthy particularly when it’s on the town's iconic Slaney Steet.

The newest shop there is an art gallery and general framing service set up by Lar Joyce, a well known local artist. Lar believes it's “such a beautiful street. I’m so happy to be part of it.”

Lar Joyce is self-taught which make him a truly intuitive artist.

From an early age he found inspiration in nature and animals.

These are still his favourite subjects.

Lar’s natural technical ability is evident in his works in oils and charcoal which are now much sought after and can be found in many leading art collections across Ireland. He is regularly commissioned for portraits, and also teaches art techniques.

One can view and purchase his work at various galleries around Ireland. He is also a regular exhibitor at Wexford Opera Festival.

WEXFORD’S ‘PICNIC AGAINST APARTHEID’ Amnesty International Wexford Group held its well-attended annual Picnic Against Apartheid on the 19th of July in William Redmond Memorial Park, Wexford.

The event followed Amnesty International’s recent release of its report titled Erasing anything Palestinian: Israel’s ethnic cleansing of West Bank Bedouin and herding communities. It exposes the scale of Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing and unlawful annexation in the occupied West Bank.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The people of Wexford’s message to Israel is unequivocal: its long-standing impunity is over, there can be no business as usual until Israel’s apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and unlawful occupation end.” n

Founded in the 1990s, Amnesty International Wexford Group is one of eight Amnesty groups around Ireland contributing to that organisation’s tireless work in defending human rights all over the world.

This friendly and energetic group of local people holds monthly meetings at 6.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month in the lobby/coffee dock in Whites of Wexford hotel. They raise local awareness about human rights, organise events and stalls and film nights, fundraise, and campaign by letter-writing and lobbying.

Due to the ongoing violence towards the Palestinian people, the daily killings, the restrictions on aid leading to hunger, the destruction of UNRWA buildings, and the blatant disregard for ceasefires by the Israeli government, the group has resumed its presence on the first Thursday of each month in Redmond Square between 6.30pm and 7pm. The next gathering will be on Thursday 6th August. The group invites all to attend, “It would be great if you could join us to express solidarity with the Palestinian people who

New data released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage shows that 78 new homes were commenced in Co. Wexford in June this year, an increase of 26% compared to the same period last year, when 62 units were commenced.

A total of 602 new homes have been commenced in Wexford since the beginning of this year, up 101% from the 299 units that were commenced in first half of 2025.

A dream come true!

For mother and son duo, Joanne and Blake Healy, a dream has come true. Several years ago they formed the idea of starting up a coffee shop / corner shop at the side of their home on St John’s Street in Enniscorthy which is located very close to the back entrance of Enniscorthy CBS, and beside a public car-park.

Their initial plan was for a modest ‘horse-box’ type of setup but that idea soon grew legs and they applied for planning permission in November 2024 for a small permanent building. Then the problems began!!! To cut a long story short, the determined pair eventually had to take their case to the ultimate planning authority, An Bord Pleanala, which thankfully granted permission and the result is now a little gem called ‘Bearista’ in the streetscape of Enniscorthy.

An expert coffee industry supplier to whom we spoke tells us that no expense has been spared in the range and type of equipment installed and only high-quality 100% Brazilian single-origin coffee beans are being used.

The shop itself and the front area have been beautifully and creatively painted by professional Gorey artist Lisa Murphy to give a colourful garden look and feel. And the Slaney News was delighted to see a handy bin at the shopfront so no excuse for anyone littering!

The shop not only serves a range of hot drinks, iced drinks, sausage rolls, acai bowls, snacks, etc, but also serves as a local ‘corner shop’ selling basic groceries including milk. The grocery content will be expanded further over the coming weeks.

We have no doubt that the determined and friendly duo, Blake and Joanne, will make a huge success of their venture and we wish them both the very best of luck with it.

The shop is closed every Tuesday but open the other six days: Mon and Wed-Fri 8am-4.30pm, and Sat & Sun: 9am-2pm. Keep an eye on the ‘Bearista Enniscorthy’ Facebook page for any changes. n

Wexford County Council Library Service has developed a new collection of assistive resources for adults, complementing its existing Sensory Toys and Assistive Resources (STAR) collection for children and young people. This new collection is designed to support older people, as well as individuals with visual impairments, sensory needs, acquired brain injuries, and those living with dementia.

The resources have been carefully selected to promote independence, wellbeing, and engagement, while supporting a range of skills, including fine motor development, cognitive stimulation, and sensory processing. The collection includes items such as largepiece jigsaw puzzles, one-button radios, giant print playing cards, radio-controlled talking watches, activity cushions, simple day clocks, talking tiles, and a wide variety of other assistive devices and activities. These resources provide practical support and can help enhance

quality of life through meaningful engagement, accessibility, and increased confidence in everyday activities.

The collection has been developed through discussions with other stakeholders, such as Wexford County Council Age-Friendly Coordinator, DESSA (Disability Equality Specialist Support Agency), the Central Remedial Clinics in Waterford and Dublin, Enable Ireland, the Waterford Memory Technology Resource room, and the HSE. The collection is now available for borrowing in all library branches throughout County Wexford and can also be accessed and reserved through their online library catalogue.

Libraries are trusted community spaces which promote lifelong learning, health, and wellbeing. The introduction of this new collection further strengthens Wexford Library's role as an inclusive community hub, supporting people at different stages of life and with varying needs. It

also provides valuable support to families, carers, healthcare professionals, and community groups by offering resources that may otherwise be difficult or costly to access.

Through this new service, Wexford County Council Library Service aims to foster greater inclusion, encourage social connection, and enhance the wellbeing of adults across the county, ensuring that our libraries continue to be welcoming spaces where everyone can access the resources they need to live fuller, more independent lives.

Joyces were delighted with the numbers who attended this special event which included a cycleathon, coffee and cake, a BBQ, pizza, as well as fantastic spot prizes and a raffle in aid of Pieta House.

This is a cause that means so much to everyone at Joyces as members of the team there have also experienced the devastating loss of loved ones to suicide, making support for Pieta's lifesaving work in suicide prevention and mental health services deeply personal.

Every donation and show of support helped raise vital funds for Pieta amounting to €6,500.

This bewitching shop prides itself on being both different and affordable, selling gifts and handmade crafts of all types – jewellery, tarot cards, patches and pins, quirky decor, souvenirs, cosplay, D&D, crochet, wigs, personalised frames and pictures, and all things witchy!

The engaging owner, Joanne Martin, bought the shop building on picturesque Slaney Street in November 2024 and she now resides overhead the retail unit. So her investment was not only in her own business, but in her own home, and in Slaney Street itself.

Joanne is very happy with the success of her business to date, is very positive about the future, and is looking forward to investing further in her retail premises including a permanent shop sign which is very much on her ‘to-do’ list.

Shops like Witch Crafts are the future of Slaney Street – a street that has so much potential for other craft-type businesses to help make it a more unique and quirky retail destination. Expansion to 24/7 specialist cardiac service begins at University Hospital Waterford Since March of last year, University Hospital Waterford (UHW) has been providing a seven-day, 8am-8pm oncall primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention and emergency cardiac care service.

From 6th of July 2026, this is now extended to a 24-hour basis of operation, through all 365 days of the year.

This specialist cardiac service at University Hospital Waterford, utilising both cardiac catheterisation laboratories in the hospital, will support the care needs of those who require it in the surrounding parts of the HSE Dublin and South East region.

The expansion at UHW is the culmination of a project which featured construction of a two-storey extension at the hospital and a recruitment programme in train for an additional 10 whole-time-equivalent specialist posts.

The two-storey extension includes a Specialist Procedures Room (second Cath Lab), a Preparation and Recovery Room, Diagnostic Facilities and ancillary accommodation.

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), also known as coronary angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked or narrowed heart arteries. It restores blood flow to the heart muscle, relieving chest pain (angina) and preventing heart muscle damage during or after a heart attack. n

Carlow’s Unum Tekkies volunteer with Ard Aoibhinn services

Thirty-six tekkies from Unum, one of the world’s leading disability insurers with offices in Carlow, teamed up with County Wexford’s Ard Aoibhinn disability services staff last month and ‘took over’ a children’s respite house in Wexford town.

Their objective was to paint the house inside and out, tidy up the garden, and complete other projects around the house to leave it like new for the children who might be there for some time while their parents take a rest or go on holidays.

The Unum tekkies, many of whom were from different countries around the world, were armed with tools of all kinds as they swooped on the house at about 9am one July morning. By the time they left seven hours later – 4 o’clock that afternoon – they had painted the four-bed house inside and out, repaired odd items, and fixed the garden.

In that time they had restored the house, named Aleana House on Clonard Road in Wexford town, to its former gleaming glory.

It was all part of Unum’s corporate social responsibility programme incorporating team building and bonding of staff members while at the same time making a massive contribution to their community.

Riki Alderton, director, IT Delivery, and coordinator of the team’s flash visit said that Unum is a global insurance company with a focus on disabilities and income. Its software development and IT centre is based in Carlow.

She said: “As part of the company’s commitment to supporting local communities through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes, employees dedicate time each year to volunteer with organisations and projects that make a positive difference in their communities.”

One of our old friends who visited Newfoundland recently found that the great grandchildren of the Wexford emigrants from Wexford speak in similar accent and tone of voice to those of the present Wexford.

Anne Doyle will launch Noel Culleton’s new book on composers inspired by nature Anne Doyle, the TV news celebrity, journalist, and Wexford Ambassador is coming to Wexford town to launch the new book titled Nature’s Music by Dr Noel Culleton.

She will launch the book at the National Opera House in High Street, Wexford town, on Thursday 27th August at 7.30pm where her fellow speakers will include the new Mayor of Wexford Cllr Vicky Barron and Paul Cleary, the chairman of Wexford Festival Opera. Michael Doyle of South East Radio will be MC. The new book, which is Noel Culleton’s fourth music book, features 100 classical composers who were inspired by nature and the world around them.

Among them are Adams – a contemporary composer, Beethoven, Berlioz, Britten, Field, Handel, Haydn, Mendelsohn, Mozart, Price, Schubert, Strauss, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Vaughan Williams, and Mascagni who composed the opera Iris, to be featured in the upcoming Wexford Festival Opera in mid-October.

Specially commissioned illustrations by David Mahon, the well-known Wexford artist and architect, are displayed throughout the book.

The book of 226 pages is an accumulation of Noel Culleton’s lifetime knowledge from his work as a scientist with the Department of Agriculture, and as head of Johnstown Castle, his fascination with the classical composers from his time as student in UCD and membership of the Wexford Gramophone Society, and his chairmanship of the Care for the Earth group which champions climate change solutions.

It is an all-Wexford production with Noel Culleton, author; David Mahon, illustrations; Helen Ashdown, proofreading; Áine Boland of Think Print, design; Jim Campbell, biography photographs; and Michael Freeman, publisher.

A further connection is that one of Att’s relations, an economist, worked for Mark in London when he was Governor of the Bank of England.

However, all that is beside the point.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael and Sinn Féin and Labour now acknowledge that Minister James Browne TD of Enniscorthy, son of John Browne, retired TD and former Minister of State, is doing a good job despite all the odds against him in attempting to solve the housing crisis in Ireland.

The thirty talented members of Bree branch of Macra na Feirme are plotting their next meetings, events, and outings and Mount Everest type conquests for the year ahead.

Transforming Rosslare Strand First, it was the Coco engineers and operatives who laid the footpaths in Rosslare Strand on the Grange Road from the Campus roundabout, past Boggans’ Londis convenience store to the Coast Hotel and back again.

They attended to it as though they were Michaelangelo painting the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. Down on hands and knees for months. Great work praised even by the sceptics who thought it would never be finished.

Then the Coco installed ramps that are now smooth to traverse and leave cars intact. Pedestrian crossings on them. Brilliant planning.

The new road markings of beautifully bright yellow and white markings on the Station Road signal to motorists when to slow and yield.

The bridge on the Station Road across the Rosslare to Dublin railway line, regarded for years by several Gardaí as ‘lethal’, now has a stop-go system. It’s not the stop-go system of traffic lights on each side of the bridge. Instead, there is a yield sign and a pause line. Less expensive.

Several angry meetings and representations and talk about traffic jams. Several staffs of the local businesses left with no place to park. Several pedestrians fearful for their lives. Several reports at costs of thousands, including one by Ray Doyle, national newspaper editor emeritus who gave his considerable services gratis drawing upon his friends in local and national government. What a cost of time and energy and suffering and doubt by so many over so many years.

The sight of the Station Road lined on both sides with cars and SUVs and between them a young mother pushing a buggy containing babies as she battled from the beach against the middle of the road to get home, will never leave local memories and the memories of countless visitors from all over Ireland.

There is more to be done on the traffic and car park in the small town centre.

The Coco have redeemed themselves somewhat with their recent excellent work. They can be good when they put their minds to the task. But why did it all take so long?

They have conquered almost every event on the vast educational, social, and cultural programme of Macra nationally. They’ve won public speaking, debating, mastermind, question time, and creative writing.

They’ve participated in leadership training and of course the unseen social curriculum.

They’ve participated in community events and helped charitable causes. Those are wickedly talented and equipped young men and women.

Old Att remembers when worried parents in the 1960s wondered where their teenage and young adult sons and daughters would be safest and do best. They chose Macra. Back then there were strategic considerations of ‘long term investments’ such as partnerships and marriage and farms and who would get the land! That was long before ‘road frontage’ became a requirement.

At tea in Áras an Úachtaráin, former President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins told Old Att that parents back in his time invested in the future of a daughter by financing her nursing at a hospital in London, because she would have a better chance there of meeting a young doctor. Similarly with Bree Macra.

In July, Bree Macra members reflected on their hoard of achievements at their AGM in Bree Community Centre. They reflected too on the 65th anniversary of the club where members past and present, and future had a great night.

Keep Talking It’s good to talk. Old Att was talking with some old friends in the Boro Inn in Clonroche. There he met with Dr Tom Dempsey, native of Ballymorris, a former Garda on the Border during the Troubles, retired manager of several pubs, home on a visit from London. A wise man.

Tom had lemonade and Att had tea served by the delightful bartenders, one of whom sported a straw hat. It was first thing on a sunny July morning.

In the hour or so in that convivial setting of such rich heritage, steeped in the history of exotic events in the county, the five or six of us intellectuals had rich and serious discussions on matters of global, geopolitical, and local consequence.

We decided that in consideration of all that’s going in the US, Middle East and England, it is best to keep the head down for at least five years, get informed about everything, keep talking, tell everybody, keep going, but leave the worrying to the government.

Mick Wallace has sponsored visits of Amnesty speakers in his restaurant in Dublin.

Atticus has recently switched onto South East Radio where the anchor and news editor is Alan Corcoran, formerly of RTÉ national radio. On his flagship Morning Mix programme, Alan Corcoran has an average of 50,000 listeners across the south-east of Ireland every week. Hugely influential.

He said: “I don’t have much time for any government in the world.” He “trusts few in national media” who he says “work to particular agendas” and “don’t tell the truth”. He trusts local radio more.

Atticus, who has contributed to national radio and several other organs, was impressed with Alan Corcoran as a presenter and journalist who asks the hard questions gently and professionally and who elicits answers that few others get.

Last week, already well-known for his revelations on NAMA, he told a journalist that it “is the biggest financial scandal in Ireland’s history. And nobody cared.” n

He was especially impressed with the responses to him on South East Radio of the human rights activist Mick Wallace, former TD, and former MEP. Mick Wallace raises human rights issues of Israel and the USA, and the massacre of people in Palestine, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. Working with him for his visits to Palestine and across the Middle East is Clare Daly, also a former TD and former MEP.

CELEBRATING A UNIQUE CONNECTION Enniscorthy Municipal District was delighted to host a Blacktown City Council delegation from 19th to 24th July as part of the ongoing friendship and cooperation between Blacktown City, New South Wales, Australia, and Enniscorthy.

The connection between the two places is rooted in history, as both locations are home to landmark sites named 'Vinegar Hill'. In 1798, the historic Battle of Vinegar Hill took place in Enniscorthy. Some years later, the 1804 Vinegar Hill Rebellion in Rouse Hill – located within the Blacktown City area – became the first battle on Australian soil between government troops and rebel forces (many of whom were Irish).

The Blacktown delegation included Mayor Brad Bunting, Kevin Poilly, Manager of Events and Sister Cities, Donna Wallace, Manager Greenspace Services, and Blacktown Youth Ambassadors Laura Corvalon-Sotomayor and Caiden Bond.

A tree-planting ceremony took place at Orchard Peace Park as part of the visit. The ceremony symbolised the strengthening

and ever-growing relationship between Enniscorthy and Blacktown and serves as a lasting reminder of the friendship and partnership between the two communities.

Members of Comhairle na nÓg and FDYS also attended the event, providing an opportunity for young people to participate in this important occasion and to engage with the visiting delegation. The ceremony highlighted the shared commitment of both communities to collaboration, cultural exchange, and future generations.

A Civic Reception took place in Enniscorthy Castle on 22 July bringing together elected members, council officials, community representatives, and invited guests to mark this important international visit. The event provided an opportunity to further strengthen the relationship between both communities and encourage continued cultural and civic collaboration. A boost for mental health services

Minister James Browne has announced a significant enhancement to mental health services at Wexford General Hospital.

Wexford’s Minister James Browne has announced a significant enhancement to mental health services at Wexford General Hospital with the establishment of a new Liaison Consultant Psychiatrist position for the Emergency Department. This marks a major milestone in the delivery of specialist mental health care in Co. Wexford.

A Liaison Psychiatrist plays a vital role in ensuring patients receive timely, specialist care by triaging patients presenting with mental health concerns at A+E, providing expert psychiatric assessment and treatment on site, and supporting patients and the wider multidisciplinary medical team throughout their care.

This new position is expected to improve patient care in Wexford by providing specialist psychiatric expertise within the hospital, helping to reduce the need for patients to travel to Waterford and other centres for assessment and treatment.

"This is significant and very welcome news for Wexford. I have been consistently calling for this position and pushing the Department of Health to ensure Wexford received the specialist mental health resources it needs. Having a Liaison Psychiatrist based in Wexford General Hospital will make a real difference for patients and their families at what is often one of the most difficult moments in their lives."

Wicklow-Wexford Sinn Féin TD Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has welcomed confirmation that a Consultant Psychiatrist is due to commence work at Wexford General Hospital this autumn, describing the development as a welcome and positive step forward for mental health services in County Wexford, but says the 10-bed acute Psychiatric Unit must now be delivered.

"This progress must now be followed by the delivery of the longpromised 10-bed Acute Psychiatric Unit at Wexford General Hospital.

Since the closure of St. Senan's Hospital in 2013, Wexford has been without its own acute inpatient psychiatric service, forcing many patients and families to travel outside the county during some of the most difficult periods of their lives."

Deputy Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin recently raised this issue directly with Minister of State for Mental Health Mary Butler in Leinster House, stressing the urgent need to progress the long-awaited unit and ensure that Wexford residents have access to local acute mental health care when they need it most.

"While the recruitment of a Consultant Psychiatrist is an important milestone, it must be matched by investment in the infrastructure and inpatient capacity that Wexford has been promised. The campaign must now be intensified to ensure the delivery of the 10-bed Acute Psychiatric Unit and to secure the mental health services that the people of Wexford deserve," he concluded. n

Patients presenting to Emergency Departments with mental health difficulties frequently require both urgent physical and psychological care. Many have experienced self-harm or are in acute psychological distress.

A Liaison Psychiatrist works alongside emergency physicians, nurses, and other specialists to ensure patients receive appropriate, timely and compassionate assessment and intervention. The role is equally important in identifying cases where an apparent mental health presentation is caused by an underlying medical condition.

Recruitment has been completed and the successful applicant is expected to take up the role in the coming weeks. This will mark the first time since the closure of St. Senan's Hospital that a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist will be based at Wexford General Hospital.

"This is an essential step in the continued development of mental health services in Wexford. While there is more work to do, today's announcement represents real progress. Enniscorthy Credit Union raises concerns about school costs New research from the Irish League of Credit Unions shows school costs are weighing heavily on families, with 59% of parents saying covering back-toschool costs is a financial burden and more than one in four getting into debt. Conducted by iReach Insights in June 2026, the survey received responses from 752 parents.

General monthly income remains the most common payment method, used by 70% of parents to fund back-to-school costs, while 37% use savings, and 18% use credit cards. A further 4% are using Buy Now Pay Later to spread the costs.

Parents are also continuing to cut back elsewhere to cover school costs. Family holidays remain the most common sacrifice at 33%, followed by summer camps or activities at 27%. A further 13% are sacrificing household bills, 12% credit card bills, 11% food, and 8% loan repayments.

This year’s survey also captures additional cost considerations, such as devices, branded sports clothing, school lockers, and grinds.

In 2026, primary-school parents expect to spend a total of €1,607 across the school year, made up of €623 in upfront back-to-school costs and a further €984 in running costs over the year.

Secondary-school parents are spending €2,142 across the school year in 2026, made up of €1,115 in upfront back-toschool costs and €1,027 in running costs.

Immediate and Ongoing Financial Pressures The research shows that while some comparable costs have eased, almost half of parents, 48%, still feel back-toschool costs are higher than last year.

For those who perceive costs to be higher, the main reasons are school uniforms, cited by 63%, branded or crested items at 40%, and school trips at 39%.

Uniforms remain a clear pressure point, with 57% of parents saying that they feel under pressure from their children to buy branded clothing, footwear, and other items (59% in 2025). Just 15% have been able to avail of a second-hand uniform, while 43% say lower-cost options such as second-hand uniforms or supermarket alternatives were not available. Secondary-school parents are particularly exposed, with 51% required to buy uniforms from a named supplier, compared with 34% of primary-school parents.

The research captured live examples of the challenges facing households across Ireland. For example, one mother said:

“Crested uniforms should be made a lot cheaper. My teenager’s school has just introduced a branded PE kit which costs in excess of €300 for the basic trousers, jumper, and t-shirt, on top of the crested uniform.”

Technology is also emerging as a pressure point, particularly in secondary schools. A mother of three said: “Many schools require digital devices, so families have to buy an iPad or laptop for each child. This offsets the government’s move to provide free schoolbooks and reduce costs for families.”

The findings also show that 81% of parents say their child’s school asks for a ‘voluntary’ contribution, up from 78% in 2025. Just 18% think schools do enough to minimise costs, although 54% say schools do not do enough, but are improving.

Funding Back to School The research found that 59% of parents say that covering back-to-school costs is a financial burden. More than 1 in 4 parents, 27% (down 6% compared to 2025), say they get into debt. Despite fewer parents getting into debt in 2026, the average amount of debt is now at €430 (up €54), indicating that those who do get into debt are struggling more than ever.

Almost 1 in 4 parents, 23%, say they are forced to deny their children certain backto-school items because they cannot afford them. Of those parents, 74% have denied their child extracurricular activities, 40% new gym gear, 35% school trips, and 30% new shoes.

David Malone, CEO of the Irish League of Credit Unions, said: “Fewer parents are getting into debt, which is positive, but the average amount owed has increased.

That suggests a split is emerging. Some families are managing better, while others are under deeper financial strain. The risk is that families who are already stretched end up turning to expensive short-term debt, or delaying other bills, just to get through the school year.”

It's encouraging that fewer parents are relying on debt, but those who do are often borrowing more, showing that some households continue to face significant financial challenges. If backto-school costs are causing concern, we encourage people to speak to their local credit union early. Enniscorthy CCTV is now live!

Wexford County Council is pleased to announce that the Enniscorthy CCTV System is now officially live and operational.

The new system, comprising of 22 cameras located at key points throughout the town, has been developed in close partnership with An Garda Síochána, following full approval from the Garda Commissioner and completion of all statutory data protection requirements.

Bunclody CCTV The ESB has set up the power connections on the four chosen buildings. The poles at the four other locations are due to be installed around now. Certification will then take several weeks. It is expected that the Bunclody system will be fully operational by late September 2026. n

Safety measures to be put in place on Enniscorthy’s east side At the July meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Council officials confirmed that a number of crossings are to be introduced this year on Enniscorthy's east side under Wexford Co. Council's Active Travel remit. These crossings will facilitate in particular students attending Coláiste Bríde Secondary School.

Since that meeting, Cllr Trish Byrne has confirmed that the first crossing will be at Spring Valley at the 21 Steps. The Slaney News understands that this crossing could even be in place before the students return to school after their summer holidays. n

The Lyre Presentation to Enniscorthy Municipal District 21st July 2026

New housing for Enniscorthy PLANS FOR NEW SOCIAL AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNVEILED At the July meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District the plans for the Lyre site on the Milehouse Road were revealed. 101 units and a creche will be constructed on 7.5 acres of the 12.16 acres site, the remaining area will be green space, roadways, etc. The development will be called Pairc na Laidhre.

There will be 44 Affordable units (6 x 4-bed, 18 x 3-bed, 18 x 2-bed, and 2 x 2-bed bungalows), and 57 Social units (34 x 1-bed apartments, 10 x 2-bed apartments, 6 x 2 bed, 4 x 3-bed, 3 x 4-bed).

The scheme is with the Dept of Housing for approval which is expected to take a few weeks, the scheme will then go through the planning permission process. All going well, work is expected to start next summer and take two years to complete.

A roadway on the site will provide access to adjoining land which is expected to be developed by a private developer thus providing more new housing in the future. n

Growing up in a seafarer’s family, Mitchell's fascination with boats began in childhood. Her father, originally from Enniscorthy, worked for Irish Shipping and later became a Marine Surveyor,

taking the family overseas while nurturing her lifelong love of maritime life.

Today, that connection continues to inspire her paintings which combine expressive brushwork, layered textures, and vibrant colour to capture the character of traditional fishing vessels and coastal seascapes. Jackie includes recent works drawn from the Riverbank, and Wexford Harbour.

Adding a deeply personal dimension to the exhibition is a special ‘Exhibition within an Exhibition’ featuring a collection of vintage family photographs documenting her father's life at sea.

Together, the paintings and photographs tell a story of family, memory, and the enduring bond between generations and the sea.

VINEGAR HILL New pathways and seating have been provided over recent months, along with new panels detailing the experience of the battle of Vinegar Hill in 1798 in both Irish and English. Parking and access improvements to Vinegar Hill are being investigated by Wexford Co. Council (WCC). The Enniscorthy East Community Development Association believes it has identified a site that could be used to allow access to the Hill for buses etc, and could potentially house a new welcome centre/ coffee shop/toilets, etc and have contacted EMD officials about it.

ST JOHN’S COMMUNITY WELLBEING & ACTIVITY GARDEN This new green space, including an amphitheatre, is a vibrant community hub that is safe, accessible and welcoming to all. Some months ago, a new walking route around St. John’s Community Hospital campus was officially opened.

ENNISCORTHY TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION PROJECTS Market Square and Castle Quarter Projects: The Part 8 process for the Market Square project was concluded on 9th September 2024. The design of the scheme has been amended to reflect the outcome of the Part 8 process. An updated cost estimate for the project has been prepared to reflect these changes.

Planning stage design for the Castle Quarter Project is also now complete, and the Part 8 process concluded successfully on 13th April 2026. The former Castle nightclub has been acquired, and a CPO process to acquire other adjacent lands is in progress.

Consultants for detailed design, procurement and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Templeshannon scheme. Stage 1 of the tender competition to appoint design consultants for the Market Square and Templeshannon project has concluded. Stage 2 of the process is ongoing, with consultants expected to be appointed in early September.

An application for the whole of the Market Square and Town Centre Regeneration Project, along with the enabling and demolition works for the Castle Quarter project, was made under the new Town and Cities Regeneration Investment fund on 1st May 2026.

Templeshannon Regeneration Project: Consultants for preliminary design, planning, detailed design, procurement and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Market Square scheme. An application has been submitted for the project as part of the Category 1A Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund call seeking funding of €150,000 for project development and design team fees on 1st May 2026.

ENNISCORTHY CCTV A total of 22 CCTV cameras have been installed at different locations within Enniscorthy Town. The system is now live.

Bunclody CCTV Project: The system is expected to go live by late September.

ENNISCORTHY SPORTS HUB A contractor, Kevin Thorpe Ltd, is now working on the second phase (sports equipment storage area, open space area, changing rooms, toilets, showers, and a small office) of the Sports Hub. The project should be complete by this coming September.

The second phase has been made possible through investment of €450,000 by The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Wexford Co. Council providing funding of €150,000. A hammer cage area has been marked out and works are due to commence in the coming weeks.

ENNISCORTHY NORTH BUSINESS DISTRICT (Old Dublin Road) Some works have been carried out in recent years on the Enniscorthy North Business District where over 2,000 people currently work. Some funding has been received lately which will allow some additional work to be done on the active travel elements of the masterplan for the area.

MURPHY FLOODS SITE This newly opened carpark adds 37 carparking spaces for the town. The site is valued at €280,000. Wexford Co. Council is committed to the long-term development of the site on a commercial basis; and so it will be placed on the open market at some stage in the future.

TURRET ROCKS A Part 8 Planning Application is being prepared for the overall plan. The Playground project is at design stage and will be funded by Wexford Co. Council itself. Design and costings have been received for the Skatepark for which an application is being prepared for a Sports Capital grant this year.

ENNISCORTHY FLOOD RELIEF SCHEME The Scheme is now proceeding on a phased basis.

Phase 1 – Bridgeworks. This phase of the project will include the construction of the new River Slaney Bridge, the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge, and the construction of a new pedestrian bridge in the town centre. Public consultation on the preferred option for Phase 1 took place late last year. An application for planning approval for Phase 1 is to be submitted in Q3 2026. Refinement of the design of the proposed pedestrian bridge is being carried out to enhance the structure visually.

Traffic modelling is being carried for the revised road layouts and traffic management following the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge and the provision of the new Road

Bridge. The design team had preapplication meeting with MARA to discuss Marine Area Consent (MAC). MARA indicated that the application for a MAC can run concurrently with the planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP). A request for a Pre Application Consultation has been submitted to ACP. Phase 2 – Flood Relief Works. This phase of the scheme will include the construction of the remaining flood relief measures for the town. The next steps are: Assess alternative design options in detail and shortlist these for consultation. Identify the preferred scheme to be brought forward for planning. Decide the appropriate planning route. Prepare planning documents and submit for planning approval. Ecology surveys are being kept up to date, such as wintering bird surveys. The application to MARA for the pre-submission meeting was submitted on the 8/05/2026.

The Scheme has a total approved budget of €51m approx. On completion, it is expected to protect 326 properties – 159 homes and 167 businesses.

BUNCLODY PARK A Stage 2 Natura Impact Statement, plans and particulars were submitted to An Bord Pleanála under Section 177AE. The Board was satisfied that the proposed development would not adversely affect the integrity of the European Site (the Slaney River Valley Special area of Conservation) in view of the Site’s conservation objectives. The application was approved with conditions at the end of February. WCC Property Section has signed contracts with the landowner to acquire lands for this project. Wexford County Council has appointed MGM Quantity Surveyors to prepare an Order of Magnitude cost estimate, to prepare for application for funds under the next Town and Villages funding call. A design team will be appointed from a framework established on foot of the Market Square/Templeshannon competition.

PAIRC NA GABHAR BUNCLODY Part 8 Planning Permission was granted on 13th April 2026. The project will progress when funding is sourced.

RAFTER STREET PEDESTRIANISATION EMD is now strictly enforcing the pedestrianisation. Signage has been erected stating current byelaw times – between 10.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. The possibility of extending the pedestrianisation hours to cover Saturdays and Sundays will be looked at.

LIBRARIES Under WCC’s three-year capital programme (2026-2028), €4.5m will go towards a new library in Enniscorthy, and €3.1m for Bunclody Library.

ALL-WEATHER ASTRO PITCH, ROSS ROAD The Part 8 planning process for the proposed changing room facilities at the Astro pitch has been completed and formally approved. ENNISCORTHY TRAILS Works are ongoing on design and planning to extend the existing town trails network to link to the Ringwood and Borodale trails.

COLUMBARIUM WALL Work on the new Columbarium Wall in Enniscorthy Lawn Cemetery has concluded.

There are 16 niches in the wall. Price per niche to be determined.

BALLYHOGUE COMMUNITY HUB The project has an expected completion date of June 2027.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS €200,000 has been secured for pedestrian crossings and traffic calming outside the Enniscorthy Community College on the Milehouse Road. This also includes funding for traffic calming from Forgelands into Bellefield Road past Lidl and Aldi. Work on a number of crossings on the east side of town will be done later this year.

BLACKSTAIRS Wexford Co. Council has been awarded almost €50,000 to fund a feasibility study for a walking and cycling trail connecting Bunclody, Kiltealy, Killanne, Templeduigan and Ballywilliam.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK ACCESS ROAD PHASE 2 The Technical Consultancy Services Contract has been awarded for Stage (i) to (v) design services. Site investigations are complete, and design work is ongoing. The tender for construction works was published March 2026. Tenders have been received and appointment of main works contractor is anticipated in quarter 3 this year.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK – IDA ADVANCE FACTORY A planning application for a proposed advance factory building in Enniscorthy Technology Park was submitted in December 2025. Final grant of planning permission was issued in March 2026.

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE At the June meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District it was revealed that the Council has submitted an application under the 2026 Town & Village Renewal Scheme, Building Acquisition Measure, to purchase a premises in Templeshannon for the purposes of a Family Resource Centre. n

A new amenity point has been completed along The Banks section of the Slaney riverside trail, further enhancing this well-used recreational route.

The Enniscorthy Municipal District outdoor staff have completed stonework and planting at Watty’s Well – a great addition that adds character and visual interest to the riverside environment.

Also along this route is the well-known Brooklyn Bench which holds particular cultural significance as it is the bench featured in the film Brooklyn on which Eilish Lacey sits during a key reflective moment in the film.

Together, Watty’s Well and the Brooklyn Bench create a distinctive stopping point along the trail.

These additions support ongoing efforts to improve public amenities, encourage outdoor activity, and enhance the overall attractiveness of the Slaney riverside trail. n

Council, and GreenTechHQ, continue to make progress improving the physical appearance of the area with cleaning and painting, planting, murals, new archways, window boxes, wall panels, laneway cleanups, removal of rubbish from black spots in the area, etc.

Wexford Co. Council is advancing plans for Templeshannon regeneration and a huge new housing and community facilities development at Turret Rocks. A new Community Centre is being planned. A Family Resource Centre is in the pipeline. Design work on a new Playground is underway.

Design and costings have been received for a new Skatepark.

Vinegar Hill has seen a number of improvements including impressive new information panels, and new pathways have been provided over recent months with new directional signage to follow.

The national emissions reductions target for the transport sector is still not on track, however the specific target for EVs within the Climate Action Plan for 2025 of 196,000 is actually ahead of schedule as there were over 200,000 EVs on the road last year.

Further momentum has been added to this trend in 2026 as more drivers are being prompted to ask, is now the time to go electric? In the first half of this year the price for a barrel of crude oil went from $64 in January up to over $110 in April as international markets were shaken by the conflict in the Middle East. As this volatility continues, many drivers are looking to EVs to provide more certainty around transport costs.

The level of interest in EVs was evident last month when the government launched a pilot scrappage scheme which was sold out in an hour. Enniscorthy Play Day at Orchard Peace Park

The Enniscorthy Municipal District team at the recent Play Day, L-R: Nichola Murphy, Jamie Barcoe, Barbara Nolan, Claire Lawless (Manager, Enniscorthy Municipal District), Leonie O’Connor, Lisa O’Shea, Conor Dillon.

Enniscorthy Municipal District hosted its Play Day 2026 in Orchard Peace Park on 15 July, building on the success of last year's event. Curated by local artist Anita Petry, with support from Jenny Ruddy and Elder Trindade, the event provided a fun-filled afternoon of creative play and activities for children and young people.

Activities included tug-of-war, hopscotch, sack races, face painting, arts and crafts, and a range of other play opportunities. A new sensory space was also introduced to provide a quiet and inclusive area for those who needed it.

The event was well attended and highlighted the importance of play, creativity and community engagement in a welcoming and inclusive environment. The Big Noisy provided free ice-creams for the children.

It is the site of a UN Peace Memorial and the Presentation Sisters’ graveyard. It contains various interesting

features, seating, impressive trees, musical instruments and other play elements, and stunning views of Vinegar Hill and the Slaney Valley.

New interpretive signage has been installed at both entrances to the park, providing clear wayfinding, highlighting key features, and improving the visitor experience. The panels include a site map, trail information, and details on the UN Peace Memorial, labyrinth, and viewing points, offering a more accessible and informative journey through the park. n

A young man from Bree is starting to make waves in the music world. Dylan Carr is a 19-year-old house music producer turned upcoming DJ who is available to be streamed across all major platforms including Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music.

Dylan tells us, “I started off making music only a few months ago. I’ve been into music my whole life and I just thought one day – this is my dream and what I want to do for rest of my life full time. I’ve started to become a DJ because I love the feel of music and I feel that I can share the same energy I have with others and play some of my new songs. I have a new album coming out soon, it’s in production with another young artist from Wexford called Lil Kix who is collaborating with me.”

Enniscorthy Municipal District Flower Grant Scheme – helping Bunclody and Ferns look great Ferns Tidy Towns and Bunclody Tidy Towns both received support from Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) for 2026 under the Flower Grant Scheme.

Ferns Tidy Towns Summer Bedding Project Report: Ferns Tidy Towns purchased summer bedding to help enhance the public realm of Ferns Village. The project supports local biodiversity while also highlighting heritage sites and encouraging community pride.

This year, thanks to the support of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, they were in a position to plant up four large planters placed outside the Credit Union on the N80 Ryland Road approach from Enniscorthy.

Also they were able to re-landscape the ‘Picnic Area’ opposite the Credit Union.

Again, this project greatly adds to projects and planting from previous years including the planters and pots that line the main street.

None of this would have been possible without the ongoing support of EMD. n

2026 Planting Scheme: This year they planted and installed 28 hanging baskets and planters in prominent locations across the village to ensure maximum impact for both locals and visitors.

Locations: 1. 23 hanging baskets placed along the beautiful stone walls surrounding St. Edan’s Cathedral and the Old Graveyard, with wonderful views of St. Mary’s Abbey and St. Mogue’s Cottage.

Fun in the Sun The Sports Active team at Wexford Co. Council held a very successful free Fun in the Sun camp on 22nd July at the Sports Hub in Enniscorthy.

The sun shone and over 100 children enjoyed activities like rugby, yoga, soccer, GAA, cricket, fun games, and calisthenics.

This was the team’s first camp of 2026 and is being followed by five other similar camps around the county. Wexford Co. Council is delighted to be able to provide these free camps to children throughout Co. Wexford.

Fashion with a purpose ‘Restyle Runway 2026’ brings Sustainable Fashion to Enniscorthy Castle in support of the Hope Cancer Support Centre.

On Saturday, 19 September 2026, as part of this year’s Enniscorthy Arts & Culture Festival, Restyle Runway 2026 will transform Enniscorthy Castle into a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and community, with a unique fashion show dedicated to making a positive impact through style.

Running from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, the event will showcase stunning runway looks created from pre-loved and repurposed clothing from the Hope Charity shop and Vision Ireland, demonstrating how fashion can be both beautiful and environmentally responsible.

More than a fashion show, Restyle Runway encourages people to rethink waste, embrace sustainable choices, and celebrate creativity through upcycling and reuse.

Wexford Reads Festival 2026 Words & pics by Maria Nolan I was delighted to catch up with longtime friend and bestselling author Carmel Harrington at Enniscorthy Library as part of the Wexford Reads Festival in July.

This is a wonderful initiative bringing authors to all of our county libraries to talk about books and writing and what works or doesn’t work for them.

Carmel Harrington is a world-renowned writer who believes discipline is the key to writing, ‘Sit down and write everyday,’ Carmel advised the library audience, ‘regardless of what you write just keep writing and then go back and review it, but get it down on paper first.’

Carmel is an extremely disciplined writer, setting a target of 1,500 words for herself every day and treating her writing as a 9-to-5 working day, and not just a pastime.

And it’s certainly working for her as she has just completed her fifteenth novel due to be released in January 2027 – The Stop-

ping Place, a thrilling mystery packed with emotional twists and turns that will make you question everything.

It is always a pleasure to listen to this most engaging author who gave the attentive library audience an insight into her books, her inspiration, and her characters as well as her writing discipline.

An author who understands the industry, Carmel spoke of her publishing journey and how important it is to have a good agent and a good marketing team promoting your work.

Carmel, who has been weaving tales and telling stories all her life, beginning at a very young age telling stories to her teddy bear and her horse Mr. Bojangles, believes that she has now found the genre most suited to her writing and her love of suspense, intrigue, mystery with twists and turns on every page, and I for one can’t wait to read The Stopping Place which promises to be perhaps her best yet. n

THE ODYSSEY Movie Reviews by Kyle Walsh 

The Odyssey, is a sword and sandal epic, directed by Christopher Nolan, starring a mouthwatering cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, John Berthanal, Robert Pattinson, Samantha Morton, Lupita Nyongo, Elliot Page, to name a few.

This film was in my top three most anticipated films of the year. To begin with, The Odyssey had alot of negative publicity coming up to its release date, especially through the power of the social media platforms. We had the controversy surrounding the casting of Lupita Nyongo as a black Helen of Troy. How could this be, screamed the negative press, this film will fail because of this cast member. Then the backlash began about the casting of Elliot Page as a soldier because he is a transgender performer. Again came the outrage. Now the movie is totally finished because of Elliot Page! My God. This film was done for before anyone even laid eyes on it according to some reports. I was told it was going to be one of the biggest flops in movie history. I always say never bet against Nolan. These two actors are in this 172-minute-long movie for about 15 minutes.

Calm down guys, relax, it’s not that big of a problem. There are a lot of fools as keyboard warriors these days who do anything for clicks. I personally had no problems with this type of casting because casting actors of many nationalities and enthnicities affirms that Homer, like Shakespeare, and like many great storytellers from many countries, belongs to everyone.

They even argued about the use of American language in the film and the American cast, that for realism the cast should have been all Greeks, if that was the case this film would have not been made at all. Again, it comes down to it that some people are just uneducated.

No point arguing with them. You will never change their minds. So with all the negativity I had heard and read I got into my car and headed for the Maxx screen in Wexford Omniplex Cinema. I was hoping for the best. Fingers were crossed. Here we go, the lights went down to a full Maxx cinema of people.

This story has been told for centuries and centuries. It’s the story of Odysseus (Matt Damon) and his men fighting in the Trojan war. They hid in the horse and devastated the city. After the war Odysseus and his men go on a decade-long journey to get back home. Odysseus wants to get home to his wife and son played here by Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland as his son. The only thing is Odysseus and his men have to fight off a Cyclops monster, witch, sea monsters, sea storms, giant soldiers, sirens, and more, to get back home. In the meantime the men back home are wanting to remarry his wife and take power, especially Robert Pattinson. Time is running out for Odysseus. Will he save his wife and son? Will he escape the monsters and gods on his travels?

This is the first time ever a movie has been filmed totally in 70mm imaxx cameras. Which is an unbelievable achievement in itself. The Odyssey best benefits from the biggest screen you can see it on so you, the viewer, can appreciate the 70mm imaxx film frame. It makes everything so much bigger. Nolan also used practical effects through-

out this movie which left me wondering how the hell did they capture certain scenes on camera without the use of CGI effects. The Cyclops monster in the cave was truly terrifying and an example of what I’m talking about. How was that shot? It is an incredible piece of filmmaking. The sea storm that hits their ship, Holy S..t, I had nightmares after watching that. Then the most terrifying scene of the whole movie with Samantha Morton’s witch. Without doubt she will be nominated for best supporting actress for this role at the Oscars, she’s that good. The effects of her turning men into pigs is a technical masterpiece with unbelievable editing from the genius Jennifer Lame.

Again another stroke of fantastic filmmaking. It’s a frightening scene and one that will stay lodged in your head for a period of time after the film is finished. Nolan is a genius and one of the best filmmakers alive today.

Nolan has created one of this generation’s most memorable epics with a scale that is gasp-inducing and action sequences that are visually hypnotic and choreographed to sublime perfection. The Odyssey is as emotionally compelling as it is visually. I grew up watching and in awe of the great classic monster movies from the imagination of the great Ray Harryhausen. An absolute genius of a man. He created creatures for the likes of the old time Sinbad movies with the stop motion skeletons for example. He created the monsters for films like Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans, and so on. Obviously technology has advanced since then, and just the Cyclops scene in the cave was pure film magic of the highest quality and brought me back to that little kid I once was watching those monster movies.

I’m so happy to report that Nolan has brought back the magic to our cinemas. Gods and monsters are on the call sheet, and they are bringing everything they need to, and they’re doing it with epic sweep and grandeur, on a big Hollywood budget. This movie looks and feels huge, expansive, and satisfyingly weighty. It’s an enthralling, gratifyingly larger-than-life and richly satisfying moviegoing experience, timed to arrive precisely at a cultural moment when audiences and movie theatres are hungering for one.

This film is absolutely brilliant. I loved it. The directing, editing, the 70mm imaxx cameras, the in-camera action sequences, the cinematography (it’s an incredible looking movie), the pulse-pounding score from the brilliant Ludwig Goransson, the performances, just about everything about this movie is incredible. For me it’s the best movie of the year so far. As for all the negativity it’s getting just look at the box office. In two weeks it has made over 700 million dollars. It will easily smash the billion dollar club. That’s all you need to know.

Nolan’s films are an event and this film is an event. This is one of the best films made in a few years and I loved it. Can’t wait to go see it again. For the full nearly three hours no one got up to go to the toilet, not one whisper could be heard, and not one annoying light of a phone could be seen. Everyone was glued to what they were witnessing on the screen in front of them. What we were witnessing was movie magic and as far as I’m concerned it’s about bloody time... by the way I loved the ending, how it all wrapped up I thought was great. A big thumbs up for this one folks.

It gets a 10/10 from me. I will be adding it to my 4k blu ray collection without doubt. n

KENNEDY SUMMER SCHOOL’S FOCUS ON HURLING The passion, heritage, and future of hurling will take centre stage at the Kennedy Summer School 2026 on Thursday evening, August 27, as some of the most respected voices in Gaelic games come together for a special discussion at St Michael’s Theatre, New Ross, featuring William Maher, Michael Duignan, Ursula Jacob, Tom Dempsey and Paul Collins.

Entitled “Talking Hurling”, the event will explore the history, challenges and future of one of Ireland’s oldest sporting traditions, bringing together players, analysts and administrators to discuss the place of hurling within the GAA and its continuing importance to Irish culture and identity. The discussion will be chaired by GAA broadcaster and journalist Paul Collins, CEO and founder of Ballywire Media, who is a familiar face around Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day and a lifelong hurling enthusiast.

Hurling, recognised as one of the oldest field games in the world with origins dating back to Celtic times, was inscribed alongside camogie on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. While the sport holds a unique place in Ireland’s sporting landscape, questions around its development, recognition, and future within the GAA continue to generate debate.

With Wexford preparing to mark the 30th anniversary of its famous 1996 All-Ireland victory, the Kennedy Summer School felt it was a timely moment to reflect on the journey of hurling, from its deep-rooted traditions to the challenges and opportunities facing the game today.

William Maher, who was appointed National Head of Hurling in 2025, brings extensive experience both on and off the field. A Tipperary All-Ireland minor-winning captain, he now leads the development of hurling nationwide, working to support the growth and sustainability of the game at every level.

He will be joined by Michael Duignan, who won two All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships with Offaly and has become one of the most respected voices in Gaelic games through his work as a GAA analyst with RTÉ’s The Sunday Game. Having previously served as Chairperson of Offaly GAA from 2019 to 2024, he continues to play an active role in the administration and promotion of the sport.

Wexford’s own Ursula Jacob will bring her experience from the highest levels of camogie and Gaelic games. A four-time All-Ireland winner and four-time All-Star recipient, she is a respected GAA analyst and commentator who has played a leading role in promoting women’s sport and the continued growth of camogie.

Tom Dempsey will add a unique Wexford perspective to the conversation. A proud Buffers Alley and Wexford hurler, his achievements include two Leinster titles, an AllStar award and a place on the Wexford team that ended a 28-year wait for All-Ireland glory in 1996. Today, he remains closely connected to the game as a respected commentator and advocate for hurling and camogie.

The “Talking Hurling” event forms part of a packed opening evening at the Kennedy Summer School, which will officially begin on Thursday, August 27, with Ireland’s Ambassador to the United States, Geraldine Byrne Nason, formally opening this year’s festival at St Michael’s Theatre.

Chairperson of the Kennedy Summer School, Eileen Dunne, said the diverse opening night programme reflects the festival’s commitment to bringing together conversations that celebrate Ireland’s heritage while examining the issues shaping the future.

Cllr McDonald also spoke about the strong GAA tradition in Wexford and noted how a local player travelled to Australia to play in the Australian Football League and she emphasised that these international sporting connections create opportunities for learning and the sharing of knowledge that ultimately benefits local clubs and communities.

The evening's entertainment was provided by local harpist Una Walsh, Martina Leacy Dance Academy, and concluded with an outstanding performance from Celtic Roots, showcasing our rich Irish culture and providing a fitting celebration of this growing international partnership. n

Master of Ceremonies for the occasion Enniscorthy District Manager Claire Lawless welcomed Minister James Browne, Leas Cathaoirleach John O’Rourke, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council Lisa McDonald, Cllrs. Barbara-Anne Murphy and Trish Byrne, Director of Services Carolyn Godkin, and visitors from Blacktown – Mayor Bunting, Manager of Events & Sister Cities Kevin Poilly, Manager of Greenspace Services Donna Wallace, and Youth Ambassadors Caiden Bond and Laura Corvalan.

Cllr. O’ Rourke paid tribute to the links between Enniscorthy and Blacktown saying that he, as the Cathaoirleach who had signed the agreement back in 2023, ‘was looking forward to many more years of collaboration’ between the two cities.

Mayor Bunting said how glad he was to be in Enniscorthy, after having to cancel their trip here in March due to the war in the Middle East, when they had been scheduled to lead the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. ‘We are extremely glad to finally make it to Enniscorthy and I feel that this new relationship is going to grow on both sides of the world because of the genuine interest of all concerned.’

Young Ferns woman has classical music world at her feet On Saturday, 25th July 2026, conductor Karen Ní Bhroin, a native of Ferns, Co. Wexford, returned to the stage of the BBC Proms at the 5,000-seat Royal Albert Hall in London following her incredibly successful debut at last year’s festival.

Grant at FCJ Bunclody, where she began her studies on clarinet. In 2006 Karen was awarded a place at the RIAM to study clarinet under Fintan Sutton, and won the EBS Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil Senior Clarinet competition 2012.

Karen conducted Horrible Science: The Big Bang Proms Experiment with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Blending comedy, science, and classical music, the programme brought CBBC’s Horrible Science to life on stage, with appearances from characters including Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. The concert featured ‘scientifically proven bangers’ from the orchestral canon, including excerpts from The Planets and music from Star Wars by John Williams.

Karen graduated in Music Education at Trinity College Dublin, in collaboration with The Royal Irish Academy of Music and the DIT Conservatoire of Music and Drama. Leaving the clarinet for the baton, Karen made her conducting debut with Trinity College Orchestra in 2012 in the final year of her degree.

A thrilled Karen said, “To debut at the Proms last year was a dream come true. To be asked back straight away – pinch me!”

Karen is the first Irish woman to take her place on the podium at the Royal Albert Hall in London – considered by many to be the most visible conducting podium in the world.

Karen began her musical training in Co. Wexford at the age of four on tin whistle, concertina, and piano with her aunt, Nóra Kavanagh. From there, Karen studied music with Gearóid

An evocative drama It was a case of third time lucky for the Slaney News as having missed the first two runs of Enniscorthy Theatre Company's production of 'A Love Like That' we eventually caught up last month with the first performance of a two-night run in The Presentation Arts Centre. And boy were we glad we did!

It was very much a case of two distinct halves – the first half builds slowly and the second half explodes with some of the best drama we've ever seen on an Enniscorthy stage, with one scene in particular which will live long in the memory. You'll certainly have a new respect for the ancient art of archery!!!

One minute the play is poignant as Kate Breen's character Ellen shares her real, inner emotions, the next minute it's all action on stage. This bittersweet, evocative drama by the legendary Wexford playwright Billy Roche will certainly make you experience the full gamut of emotions.

All the cast are superb (Kate Breen, Fintan Kelly, Fergal Kelly, Maeve Ennis, Finbarr Delaney), the direction is detailed and immersive (Jim Ivers), and the set is a joy to behold (Conor Ennis). A favourable mention also for the backstage crew: Pat Murphy, Naoise O'Connor, Anna Boyce, Lee O'Connor, Kevin Armstrong, Eanna O'Reilly, Paul O'Reilly, and Larry Dunne (poster artwork).

Bursaries for Wexford artists The Arts Council has awarded 258 artists nationwide a total of €4.3 million through the latest round of the bursary award scheme. As part of this, seven artists in Co. Wexford have been awarded a total of €124,070.

The Arts Council’s bursary awards, on behalf of the state, support individual artists with a grant of up to €20,000, which provides practitioners the time and resources necessary to think, research, reflect, and engage with their arts practice.

The awards emphasise the value and benefit that an extended process of engagement can bring to an artist’s development. The works and learnings

developed through these awards benefit both the individual artist, audiences, and the wider arts ecosystem in Ireland.

Bursaries are awarded across a range of artistic disciplines, reflecting the diverse and fluid nature of arts practice.

A Wex-Art Festival open call group exhibition for artists working in the South East region, with a particular focus on County Wexford. The aim of the exhibition is to give artists a platform to showcase their work during the arts festival, which runs alongside Wexford Festival Opera.

The theme of the exhibition is ‘Art as Alchemy’.

Samhain marks the end of one season and the beginning of the next; winter. A time of reflection, metabolising and change. This exhibition takes place during this moment of turning.

Art practice shares in the rhythmic cycles of nature. It too holds the power of transformation and renewal. Through the slow labour of attention, artists alchemise thoughts, ideas and experiences into something new and tangible. They have the power to give ideas new shape and form. Wexford Arts Centre in partnership with the Ormston House, is pleased to present Memory of a Free Festival. The exhibition will run in the lower and upper galleries from Saturday, 8 August, to Saturday, 3 October, 2026. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Memory of a Free Festival is a touring exhibition and events programme taking place between March 2026 and March 2027. Conceived by Ormston House, the project responds to the Carnsore Point anti-nuclear festivals that took place in Wexford between 1978 and 1981. Organised by a coalition of groups, the festivals were attended by thousands of people.

These legions were unified by their shared opposition to what would have been the first nuclear power plant to be built in Ireland. In addition to musical entertainment and lectures, the free festivals also included workshops and exhibitions.

Featuring works by Orla Barry, Brian Duggan, and Alanna O’Kelly, the exhibition also includes photos by Derek Speirs and original archival material produced by the Irish Anti-Nuclear Movement. The tour launched with a one-day event at Project Arts Centre on 21 March 2026 including contributions from individuals who were involved in organising or performing at the Carnsore festivals.

Artists Biographies Orla Barry is an artist and shepherd who lived in Brussels for sixteen years but now lives and works on the south coast of rural Wexford. Barry writes, makes video and sound installations, and creates performances. Her work focuses on language, both written and spoken, as well as its visual deconstruction and displacement, via frequently associative techniques. She explores means of communication and on

how the complexity of human relationships is able to find a place for itself within this. Fiction, autoethnography, and oral history are blended to reflect on the culture of disconnection from the natural environment, the boundaries of art, and the rural every day.

Brian Duggan trained as a sculptor and now works in video and installation projects. His work seeks to investigate the physical limitations of the immediate environment on the individual. Stress and pressure, ideas of control and where we stand, how we are tied and what binds us, are all continuous references within his artistic practice. Duggan has long concerned himself with questions and difficulties within labour and leisure, history and tradition, politics and popular entertainment. His installations and film work are grounded in material history. A certain theatricality is implemented and, from time to time, results in humorous work that simultaneously makes statements about art, the overlooked individual, and society.

Alanna O’Kelly attended the National College of Art and Design and the Slade School of Art, London. Her practice incorporates sculpture, performance, slide installation and film.

Influenced by feminist politics, O’Kelly explores ideas of the psychic conflicts of our shared history and the continuity of tradition. O’Kelly went to Greenham Common in 1983 to take part in ‘Sounds Around the Base’ that had 30,000 to 50,000 women surrounding the 9-mile perimeter fence of the military base. Her work has featured in major group and solo exhibitions since the 1980s and she represented Ireland at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1996.

There will be a closing event for the Wexford iteration of Memory of a Free Festival on Saturday, 3 October. Further details to be announced.

August has arrived, and looking back on July, it’s clear just how quickly the garden can change. After the cooler and wetter start to the year, the sudden spell of warm weather in Ireland completely changed the pace of the garden. Everything seemed to grow overnight, but it also brought its own challenges. The greenhouse, which is usually a huge advantage in our climate, became almost unbearable during the hottest days. Opening doors and vents was essential, but even then, the heat inside could be intense.

It was a reminder that while we often wish for better weather, too much heat can create its own problems. Plants that enjoy warmth thrive, but others can quickly struggle. The garden always has a way of keeping you guessing.

One of the biggest lessons from July came from my spinach.

After losing my first sowing when it bolted in the heat, I’ll definitely be changing my approach. One minute I was picking fresh leaves and the next it had gone straight to seed. It's frustrating when a crop doesn't work out, but that's part of growing your own. Sometimes the weather decides before we do. I'll be sowing another batch later in the summer when temperatures are more favourable, as cooler conditions should give it a much better chance.

Mark describes himself very much as a ‘hobby gardener’ who is not academically trained in horticulture. He started planting with very little knowledge a few years ago and that knowledge has now ‘mushroomed’! Mark loves sharing his passion for growing with our readers. the highlights. They have really started to come into their own, and seeing the first fruits developing makes all the planning earlier in the year worthwhile.

I’m especially looking forward to seeing how Orion's Belt performs. It’s a compact variety, but the fruit is certainly eye-catching, with beautiful stripes of red, purple, green and gold. Growing varieties like this is one of the reasons I enjoy gardening so much. It’s not always about the biggest harvest. Sometimes it’s about growing something different just because it catches your attention.

Of course, not everything has gone perfectly. One of the tomato beds developed a problem after a water pipe disconnected from the irrigation system. I didn't notice straight away, and by the time I realised, some of the tomatoes had developed blossom end rot. The plants themselves looked healthy, but the fruit had already suffered.

It was a frustrating mistake, especially because it came from something so small. Blossom end rot is often caused by inconsistent watering, and it was a good reminder that even with

systems in place, they still need checking. A quick walk around the greenhouse and a few minutes checking pipes, supports and plants can prevent much bigger problems later.

August is a good time to start looking beyond the summer harvest. It can be easy to think the main growing season is coming to an end, but there is still plenty that can be sown. After my spinach failure earlier in the year, I’ll be giving it another go.

Late summer is often a much better time for it, as the cooler temperatures suit it far better.

August is also the time when the garden starts to feel generous. The hard work from earlier in the year begins to pay off, and some of the things you were only hoping for a few months ago are finally becoming a reality.

Along with the vegetable harvests, it's been exciting to see the grapevine beginning to develop. Watching those small bunches of grapes form is one of those simple moments that makes all the effort worthwhile.

Spring cabbage is another crop worth considering now. It might seem strange planting something that won't be harvested until next year, but gardening is often about thinking ahead. A small amount of effort now can provide fresh produce at a time when the garden is usually much quieter.

Not every crop succeeds, and not every plan works out exactly as expected. That's part of the enjoyment of growing your own. The successes are more rewarding because of the setbacks, and even the failures usually teach you something for the following year.

If you have empty spaces appearing after early crops finish, don't leave them sitting unused.

Whether it's sowing salad leaves, preparing beds for autumn crops or simply adding compost back into the soil, there is still plenty of life left in

A UNIQUE FOOD PROJECT A unique Food and Horticultural Project at St. Fintan's National School, Taghmon, has come to a conclusion following a very successful inaugural year.

Developed by Ann Marie Laffan of Wexford County Council and funded through the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme, the inspiration for the project came from Principal Willie Cleary, who noted that many children no longer understand where their food comes from. In response, Ann Marie developed an innovative hands-on programme designed to reconnect children with food production, healthy eating, cooking, and horticulture through practical experiences.

The success of the programme was made possible through the commitment of many community partners and volunteers.

Special recognition was given to local volunteer Ned Furlong.

Initially helping with practical tasks such as preparing growing beds, transporting compost and maintaining the greenhouse, Ned quickly became an integral member of the team, building wonderful relationships with the children and contributing enormously to the success of the project.

Initially involving Fifth and Sixth Class pupils together with the school's younger and older autism classes, the project proved so successful that it was expanded to include every class in the school. Each class was allocated its own growing bed within the purpose-built greenhouse funded by the project, transforming it into both a productive growing space and an outdoor classroom where children learned to sow, grow, and care for fruit, vegetables, and flowers.

Cathaoirleach of Rosslare Municipal District Cllr. Frank Staples praised the initiative, saying, "This project is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when schools, local communities, and organisations work together. The enthusiasm shown by the children has been inspiring, and the practical skills and knowledge they have gained will stay with them for many years."

Weekly sessions were delivered by horticultural tutor Catherine George, who introduced pupils to growing food, healthy eating, cooking skills, and sustainable food practices. She was joined by Sarah Shiggins, Community Food and Nutrition Worker with FDYS, who also secured additional support through Safefood to further enhance the programme.

Learning extended far beyond the classroom through a series of engaging educational visits. Pupils visited the farm of local farmer and Irish Farmers' Association representative Jer O'Mahony near Wellingtonbridge, where they experienced life on a working farm, learned about livestock, crops, renewable energy, and modern farming practices.

Speaking at the launch, Ann Marie Laffan said, "This project was about much more than growing vegetables. It was about helping children understand where their food comes from, giving them practical life skills, encouraging healthy eating, and fostering a real appreciation for nature, farming, and their local community. None of it would have been possible without the incredible support of the school, our tutors, volunteers, and partner organisations, all of whom embraced the vision from day one." n

The children also visited Saltrock Dairy, where they learned about dairy farming, discovered how milk is produced and even made their own butter. A guided foraging walk through Courtown Woods with Lorraine O’Dwyer of Gallivanting Tours introduced pupils to edible native plants and the importance of understanding the natural environment as a food source.

Another memorable visit came from Tara Hill Honey, whose beekeeping demonstration gave children a fascinating insight into the essential role bees play in pollination, biodiversity, and food production.

There's something special about watching a growing season take shape. Hands in the soil, and a steady stream of neighbours popping in for a cup of tea at our Catch Up Monday gatherings.

That's exactly the atmosphere at Gort na Gréine as the allotments keep growing from strength to strength.

We've been lucky with fabulous weather, plenty of sunshine to keep everyone smiling. With a hosepipe ban now in place for the coming weeks, we're counting our blessings for the rainwater harvesting system here at the allotments, keeping everything watered sustainably. The onions and carrots are already out of the ground and into the kitchen, and the tomatoes won't be far behind.

We were delighted to welcome Joleen Murphy out to film a tour of the site, where our founder and Chairperson, Michael Devereux, spoke about the heart of the project. An intergenerational space built around community, mindfulness, and passing on growing skills to the next generation. He also thanked WWETB for their support through REACH funding and Enniscorthy Credit Union, our sponsor from the very start.

Congrats to all at the Enniscorthy Community Allotments (ECA) on making the shortlist for the National Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards for 2026.

The winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in Limerick in October. It would be great to see ECA add to the impressive list of other awards it has won over recent years.

On the learning front, we marked the end of a wonderful 13week horticultural therapy programme with Coralie Ryan of Irresistible Outdoors (www.irresistibleoutdoors.ie), who worked with three different groups over the course of the programme: friends and members of the wider community, groups from Reachability, Windmill Therapeutic CLG and KITE, and the Wexford branch of Parkinson's Ireland. The feedback from everyone involved was hugely positive, and we're hopeful that Coralie will be able to run the workshop again next year, with funding from Sláintecare at Wexford Co. Council.

We also wrapped up our Food Preservation & Natural DIY Cosmetics course with Annika Schultz, and our Herbalism course with Silya Harms has come to a close too, leaving a group of budding herbalists with new skills to bring home.

July also saw us out and about with our bucket collection, and we're hugely grateful to everyone in Enniscorthy who dropped a few coins in and stopped for a chat along the way.

Every bit helps keep the allotments running and growing.

A perfect combination The ‘Summer Gathering’ hosted by the Wexford Food Producers Network and Cyril & Margaret Wheelock for the members, their families, and friends on Sunday 5th July at The Village at Wheelocks was a nice ending to another successful ‘Wexford Strawberry Weekend’ at the Enniscorthy venue. It was a wonderful sunny evening with great company and great food enjoyed by all.

Guests enjoyed a fabulous display of multi-award-winning Wexford food produce, showcasing the wonderful array of locally produced foods from Wexford. And the dessert course on the menu featured one of Wexford’s finest signature items – Wheelocks Wexford Strawberries with Wheelocks Wexford Strawberry Ice Cream – what a combination!

Major awards for Wexford Home Preserves A family business from County Wexford has achieved one of the highest honours in international food as Wexford Home Preserves secured a second consecutive 3-Star Great Taste Award for its handmade Blackcurrant Jam and, for the first time in the company's history, earned a coveted place on the Great Taste Golden Fork shortlist.

The achievement places the New Ross producer among an elite group of artisan food makers recognised for exceptional quality on the global stage. From 15,038 products entered into the Great Taste Awards this year, only 2% achieved a 3-star rating. The three-star rating is the highest possible at the internationally renowned Great Taste Awards. Co. Wexford Chamber’s Budget submission On 6th July 2026, County Wexford Chamber launched its PreBudget 2027 Submission, calling on the government to prioritise strategic investment, strengthen business competitiveness, and build the foundations for Wexford's future economy.

The submission, developed following extensive engagement with Chamber members, stakeholders, and public representatives, sets out a clear roadmap to unlock Co. Wexford's economic potential through targeted investment and policy reform.

The Chamber's recommendations are centred around three strategic priorities:  Unlocking Growth through Strategic Infrastructure.  Making Wexford a Competitive Place to do Business.  Building Wexford's Future Economy.

Among the key recommendations are accelerated delivery of the M11 corridor to Rosslare Europort; continued investment in Rosslare Europort and offshore renewable energy infrastructure; upgrades to water, wastewater and electricity infrastructure; measures to reduce the cost of doing business; reforms to improve workforce participation; and investment in entrepreneurship, innovation, skills, and the SETU Wexford campus.

County Wexford Chamber CEO Paula Roche said the submission reflects both the ambition of Wexford businesses and the challenges they continue to face.

Dog Trust’s warning The recent very hot weather may be gone, but we are still only in August so there is the possibility of further heat waves before the summer is over, so it is still worth heeding Dogs Trust’s warning about pet dogs in hot cars.

The charity says that even a few minutes in a parked car can prove fatal, and leaving pets at home is a safer option.

Many owners underestimate how quickly the temperature inside a vehicle can rise. On a warm day, the inside of a parked car can become dangerously hot within minutes, creating conditions that can quickly become life-threatening for dogs.

The charity is encouraging owners to plan ahead before heading out during warm weather. If dogs cannot accompany their owners into a shop, café or other destination, the safest option is to leave them at home where they can stay cool and comfortable.

Paulina Padlo, Communications Manager at Dogs Trust Ireland, said: "Many people think they'll only be gone for a few minutes, but that's all it can take for temperatures inside a parked car to become dangerously high. Leaving the windows open slightly or parking in the shade does not keep a car cool enough to make it safe for a dog.

"If you're heading somewhere your dog can't come with you, it's far safer to leave them at home than in the car. Before you go, make sure they have plenty of fresh drinking water, access to a cool, shaded place to rest both indoors and outdoors where possible, and that they won't be left in a room that could become very hot during the day, such as a conservatory or sunroom. As a general guide, dogs should not be left home alone for more than four hours, so it's important to plan your day with their welfare in mind."

Dogs Trust is also reminding owners to stay alert for the signs of heatstroke during periods of warm weather. Symptoms can include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, vomiting, lethargy or collapse. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool, shaded area, begin gently cooling them with room temperature water and contact your vet immediately. Acting quickly can make all the difference.

First introduced in 2019 and refreshed in 2024, the Kamiq has sold consistently for Skoda in Ireland but is outshone in the sales charts by the likes of the Toyota Yaris Cross, Hyundai Kona, Ford Puma and even newcomers like the Opel Frontera.

That feels slightly unfair because even in 2026, the Kamiq still has

plenty going for it.

The Kamiq is the smallest of Skoda's fuel-powered SUVs, sitting below the Karoq and Kodiaq. Despite its compact dimensions, it delivers the practicality and value that have become hallmarks of the Czech brand.

Slaney moToring Prices start at €29,270 for the entry-level Essence model and rise to €38,930 for the range-topping Monte Carlo. The car tested here is the Selection+ fitted with the 115hp 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox, priced from €34,170.

For many buyers, this trim represents the sweet spot in the range.

The Kamiq received a subtle facelift in 2024, although you'd need a keen eye to spot many of the changes. A redesigned octagonal grille sits more upright than before, while matrix LED headlights are now available for the first time.

The styling won't turn heads but the Kamiq's biggest selling point has always been its clever use of space. The 400-litre boot is comparable with the Yaris Cross, although it trails the Puma and Frontera on paper. In everyday use however, it's a genuinely useful space with even a full size spare wheel included.

Adult passengers will enjoy generous legroom and headroom in the back, making the Kamiq feel larger inside than a Ford Puma for instance. Families will appreciate the three Isofix mounting points, while this Selection+ model also adds a rear centre armrest.

While the design is beginning to show its age in places, everything feels robust and built to last.

A digital driver's display and central touchscreen are now standard across the range, while all models include cruise control, rear parking sensors and air conditioning.

Moving up to Selection brings wireless smartphone connectivity and dual-zone climate control, while Selection+ adds a welcome touch of luxury with suede and leather-effect upholstery, heated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, power adjustment for the driver's seat, ambient lighting and a reversing camera. Wireless phone charging remains an optional extra.

The Kamiq range has been simplified over the years. Gone are the diesel engines and the larger 1.5litre TSI petrol, leaving the familiar 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-

Available with either 95hp or 115hp, buyers can choose between manual and DSG automatic gearboxes depending on specification. The test car had the more powerful 115hp version with a six-speed manual transmission, and it's an excellent combination.

Performance is lively enough for everyday driving, reaching 100km/h in 9.7 seconds, while the engine is refined and quiet on the move.

Hardware and software updates introduced with the facelift have also improved efficiency, with average fuel consumption of 5.9 litres / 100km. Annual motor tax comes in at €200.

The steering is light without feeling vague and the suspension strikes a comfortable balance. It's not a car designed to excite, but it inspires confidence and is exceptionally easy to drive both around town and on longer motorway journeys.

To sum it up, the Skoda Kamiq is spacious, well-built and comfortable, while the 115hp petrol engine is still an excellent all-rounder for drivers who aren't ready to make the switch to electric.

In a crowded small SUV market, the Kamiq still has a lot to offer. n

Bree Billiards and Snooker 6 Red Snooker Tournament 2025/26: This was the final tournament of the season, and saw 16 cueists taking to the green baize in the first round. With only 6 reds racked up, on a best of 3 frames format, the tournament progressed quickly to the best of 5 frames Final.

On June 8th, Craig Kenny (-3) and John Hearne (-3) lined up to do battle for the "Dempsey Commercial Cup". Craig took the 1st frame, potting the pink to win.

The 2nd frame saw a scoreline of 20/16 going into the colours, and now it was anyone's game. Craig took the yellow, and in his next visit the green, brown, blue and pink to close out the game.

With the pressure mounting on John, he held his nerve in the 3rd frame to pot all the colours up to the pink, levelling the score at 31/31. So now it was a black ball game, which John took to claim his first game. With his confidence growing, he won the 4th frame convincingly, leaving the match poised at 2/2. Both players were potting well, and showing good safety play, which is essential with only 6 reds on the table. Down to the colours, and John potted the green to trail by 18/27. Craig took the brown and blue in his next visit, now leading 36/18. John played a brilliant snooker behind the black, and picked up 6 points on the resulting foul. He now required the pink and black to win, but Craig kept his cool, potted the pink to take the game, and claimed the match on a 3 frames to 2 scoreline.

Beaten semi-finalists were Stephen Cahill (+7) and John Bolger (-2) and John also claimed the highest break (36).

It was a good conclusion to the competitive season. The club remains open

to members for practice sessions if they so wish.

The AGM will be held later in the year, prior to the next season which begins in September.

Huge win for Enniscorthy’s Ben Doyle Congratulations to Enniscorthy’s Ben Doyle on winning the Ultimate Pool Pro Series 4 in Bolton, England, for the first time, becoming only the second Irish winner ever, and defeating the World No.1 on the way to the final.

Edermine Ferry Rowing Regatta A fantastic weekend of rowing, community spirit, and competition was enjoyed at the Edermine Ferry Rowing Club annual regatta last month, with warm weather, calm conditions, and a gentle breeze providing ideal racing conditions for the event.

The regatta brought crews from Edermine Ferry, Ferrycarrig, Killurin, and St. Kearns Rowing Clubs to the banks of the Slaney, with competitors of all ages taking to the water over two days of exciting racing.

The host club enjoyed an excellent weekend on the water, securing nine first-place finishes, eleven second-place finishes and three third-place finishes across a range of categories.

First-place finishes were achieved by the 1st Class Ladies, U14 Girls, U16 Girls, U18 Girls, U18 Boys, 2nd Class Ladies, 2nd Class Men, 1st Class Mixed and Pre-Vet Ladies crews. Second-place finishes went to the 1st Class Ladies, 3rd Class Mixed, Vet Mixed, U12 Girls B, 2nd Class Mixed, U14 Boys, 3rd Class Men, 3rd Class Ladies, U12 Boys, Pre-Vet Men and Ladies Pair Oar crews. Third-place finishes were secured by the U12 Girls A, 1st Class Men, and Ladies Pair Oar crews.

The success of the regatta was made possible by the efforts of volunteers who assisted with every aspect of the event, including setting out the course, stewarding, parking and traffic control, providing refreshments, boat towing, and both setting up for and cleaning up after the event.

The club also expressed its gratitude to parish priest Fr. Byrne for performing the Blessing of the Boats, to Slaney Search & Rescue and Wexford Civil Defence for their invaluable support and safety assistance throughout the event, and to the HSE Health Promotion Unit whose sun safety informational posters and goodie bags proved extremely popular with young competitors and spectators.

Speaking after the event, the club’s spokesperson paid tribute to the many members, parents, and supporters who volunteered their time over the weekend. "Events like this simply would not be possible without the incredible support of our members, parents, and wider community. Their generosity, hard work, and willingness to volunteer are what make days like this possible. We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped make the weekend such a success."

The club also praised all participating crews for their sportsmanship and thanked fellow clubs Ferrycarrig, Killurin, and St Kearns for contributing to a memorable and enjoyable regatta and showcasing not only the strength of rowing in the region but also the sense of community that continues to underpin the sport in county Wexford. n

Slaney hiSTory Slaney aD & heriTage July was a busy month for Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society who made their annual pilgrimage to Tullow for the anniversary of the death of Father John Murphy on 2nd July 1798.

At the monument in the middle of Tullow town, members of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society paid their respect with a prayer and the laying of a wreath

by Tom Boland and a rendition of Boolavogue led by Chairman Ray Murphy.

On Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th July the group set up camp at the Clohamon Vintage and Heritage Fair and dressed as Pikemen and women they displayed outfits and weapons of the 1798 Rebellion period, including redcoat uniforms, pikes, and a variety of muskets and canon, adding pageantry and interest to the wonderfully organised and very well attended event, with members of the group Joe and Deirdre Mernagh winning the Best Dressed Couple award.

On 18th and 19th July the group were delighted to be invited to Fishguard to participate in the re-enactment of the last invasion of mainland Britain by the French in 1797.

The Invasion, needless to mention, was unsuccessful as the French soldiers were plied with drink by the local women led

by Welsh heroine Jemima Nicholas who rounded up twelve French soldiers who had been drinking with pitchforks and held them captive overnight in a church.

The French surrendered shortly afterwards at the Royal Oak pub which still stands in Fishguard today and where the re-enactment of the event took place after the skirmish between French sol-

diers and the Jemimas on the seafront at Goodwick, Fishguard.

EHRS and Lord Edwards Own set up camp at Goodwick and the re-enactment, complete with canon and mounted soldiers, took place there on both days in front of several hundred spectators.

It is a wonderful event and Fishguard is so close to us here in Wexford, just over a three-hour boat trip that we should certainly be looking at links like these and indeed our Norman links to organise tourism events between the two areas.

Whilst there I took the opportunity to look up the Cambro-Normans who came to Wexford at the behest of Diarmuid McMurrough in 1169.

Slaney hiSTory & heriTage Maurice de Prendergast who received lands in Wexford from Diarmuid, King of Leinster, and whose son Philip de Prendergast built Enniscorthy Castle was from Pembrokeshire, however Prendergast Castle is long gone, buried beneath concrete and housing estates, but I did locate William Marshal, the greatest Knight who ever lived, at Pembroke Castle, which we could certainly link with to organise Norman events in both Pembroke and New Ross, the town built by William Marshal and his wife Isabel de Clare.

Tullow: Anniversary of the death of Fr John Murphy on 2nd July 1798.

And Aoife McMurrough and her daughter with Strongbow, Isabel de Clare, wife of William Marshal, are both reputed to be buried at Tintern about two and a half hours drive from Fishguard.

This was something that I hadn’t known and intend to pay my respects at their graves at Tintern next year for the year of the Normans.

There is such huge potential for both our communities for next year’s commemoration of William The Conqueror with our shared connection to the Cambro Normans and the wonderful service now between Rosslare and Fishguard and Pembroke, this is a no-brainer to increase the volume of tourists on both sides of the Irish Sea. Let’s not waste it. n

Apply now for LEAF funding CALLING ALL GROUPS INTERESTED IN CLIMATE ACTION, BIODIVERSITY, ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT, ETC. Wexford County Council invites applications for funding submissions under the Local Environmental Action Fund (LEAF) 2026.

The LEAF programme is developed in partnership with IPB Insurance and the CCMA (County and City Management Association) marking the 100th anniversary of the IPB. Wexford County Council is allocating a total of €100,000 in funding for qualifying community groups across the County.

The fund is aimed at supporting the sustainability aims of local Tidy Towns, Resident Associations, Environmental Groups, and partner voluntary organisations that contribute to enhancing their communities through climate action, biodiversity, and environmental enhancement projects.

Application Closing Date: 7th August, 2026.

Grant awards may range from €1,000 (min) up to €25,000 (max) per project.

Transformation at Enniscorthy’s Loreto Village 25 Homes Transformed – Warmer Homes – Lower Bills – A Brighter Future: Loreto Village in Enniscorthy has undergone a major new energy retrofit, helping to improve comfort, reduce energy costs, and support independent living for the older residents and pensioners residing in this housing estate.

Working in collaboration with Tinteán Housing on this project, South East Energy Agency delivered a range of energy upgrades to this housing estate including:  Solar PV panels  Attic & cavity wall insulation  Energy-efficient windows & doors  Heating system improvements.

The results speak for themselves:  25 homes upgraded  BER improved from D2 to A-rated

 209,520 kWh of energy saved annually  33.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions reduced each year.

This project demonstrates how deep energy retrofits can create warmer, cost-

effective, and more sustainable communities for residents who wish to reduce their energy bills.

230 vacant properties restored Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, has confirmed more than 230 homes have been brought back into active use in Wexford through €12.9 million in Vacant Property Refurbishment Grants.

A total of 505 applications for the grant have been approved in the county since the scheme began in July 2022, according to new statistics released last month.

A total of 231 grant payments have already been issued on completion of works.

At a national level, more than 6,300 homes have been brought back into active use through €348.6 million in Vacant Property Refurbishment Grants, with a total of 14,377 applications approved since the scheme began.

In the second quarter of this year alone, €52.6 million of grants were issued on completion of works bringing 923 vacant homes back into use.

Water supply – upgrade works Uisce Éireann is getting underway with upgrade works to replace old and damaged cast iron water mains in Enniscorthy.

1.6 kms of new, modern pipes will be installed to strengthen the local network, reduce disruption for homes and businesses, and support growth and development in the local community. The work will increase the capacity of the existing water network, improve performance, and provide a more resilient water supply for a growing population.

With a €16 million investment recently completed on the water treatment plant on Vinegar Hill, the focus is now turning to realising the full potential at the plant by building a brand-new larger pipe to carry that water into the town, unlocking the potentail for much needed growth and development in the town.

Additional sections of watermains were prioritised as part of this project for replacement in the town due to their deteriorating condition, which has at times resulted in low pressure and supply interruptions to homes and businesses.

When completed, these critical works combined will significantly reduce leakage and provide local residents with a sustainable and more reliable water supply for generations to come.

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns volunteers are doing a lot of work at present on their anti-dog-fouling campaign including the use of stencils and spray paint to spray “Bag It, Bin It” messages on footpaths which are prone to dog fouling. Dog poo contains harmful bacteria, is unsightly, gets on shoes, buggies, wheelchairs etc and, of course, is a big problem for visually impaired people. The Tidy Towns group is pleading with dog owners to practise responsible dog ownership, pick up after your dog and bin that poo. n
