This major investment could facilitate the delivery of over 2,000 new homes for Enniscorthy. A large investment is also being made in Gorey and Wexford town. See page 13.

Enniscorthy receives major housing boost Last month Minister James Browne TD announced major investment which will facilitate delivery of over 2,000 new homes in Enniscorthy, as well as projects in Gorey and Wexford town.

The key to unlocking that level of housing investment is the first phase of the Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF) programme. In Co. Wexford, five major projects are to be funded as part of a major multi-annual commitment: Milehouse to Moyne Link Road - €20m.

Turret Rocks Link Road - €4m.

Ballynagee Link Road - over €10m.

St Waldron’s Strategic Transport Link over €10m.

Ballytegan Safety works - under €10m.

Administered by the new Housing Activation Office within the Department of Housing, the €1bn Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund is the largest housing infrastructure fund announced in Ireland for many years.

Announcing over €54m in project funding for Co. Wexford, Minister Browne said: “Today, I am making the first announcements under the Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund. I invited Local Authorities and the Land Development Agency to apply for funding to progress infrastructure projects that will

unlock housing in towns and cities across the country – with an emphasis on shovel-ready projects and works which can be quickly started.

“Across the country, we see zoned land lying idle because the critical enabling infrastructure needed to support housing development is not in place. The projects I am providing funding for today will directly tackle this problem. By investing now, we can accelerate home building.”

The Housing Activation Office will coordinate the multi-agency investment required at all levels, working directly with critical utilities and transport agencies, including Uisce Éireann and ESB Networks, to ensure that complementary investment is provided and that lands are fully serviced and ready to deliver housing.

Welcoming the funding announcement, Senator Cathal Byrne said: "Under the Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF), we see two important projects being advanced today. Namely the Turret Rocks project which is the link road from Esmonde Road to Spring Valley including junction works with Esmonde Road and Spring Valley Road (c. 420m length) and associated drainage works.

This will directly unlock 424 residential units.

"The second project is the Milehouse to Moyne link road, which is c. 2000m length and runs from Milehouse R702 to Quarry Park R772, and upgrade of pedestrian linkage in Greenville and Cherryorchard / Caim Road to include footpath, pedestrian crossing, and public lighting. This will directly unlock lands for 1,600 residential units and indirectly unlocks a further 1,100 residential units.

"I am delighted to see this investment in Enniscorthy. From my work on the ground I am acutely aware of the need to invest in infrastructure projects which will make the town more accessible and ease traffic congestion, as well as making progress towards providing housing for Enniscorthy.” n

WEXFORD’S ‘PICNIC AGAINST APARTHEID’ Amnesty International Wexford Group is holding its next Picnic Against Apartheid on the 19th of July in William Redmond Memorial Park, Wexford, 2pm to 5.30pm. Free admission. All welcome.

The event follows Amnesty International’s recent release of its report titled Erasing anything Palestinian: Israel’s ethnic cleansing of West Bank Bedouin and herding communities. It exposes the scale of Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing and unlawful annexation in the occupied West Bank.

The people of Wexford’s message to Israel is unequivocal: its long-standing impunity is over, there can be no business as usual until Israel’s apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and unlawful occupation end. n

Founded in the 1990s, Amnesty International Wexford Group is one of eight Amnesty groups around Ireland contributing to that organisation’s tireless work in defending human rights all over the world.

This friendly and energetic group of local people holds monthly meetings at 6.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month in the lobby/coffee dock in Whites of Wexford hotel. They raise local awareness about human rights, organise events and stalls and film nights, fundraise, and campaign by letter-writing and lobbying.

SHOPFRONT PAINTING SCHEME AND FLOWER GRANT SCHEME 24 successful applications were received for the Enniscorthy Municipal District Shopfront Painting Grant Scheme. Correspondence has issued to the relevant business owners.

The Flower Scheme deadline for submitting receipts is 17th July. Paint/Awning deadline for completion of works is 11th September.

The scheme was introduced to improve the attractiveness of the town and make it a better place to live, work, and invest.

A total sum of €9,200 is being allocated to the scheme.

A FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE FOR ENNISCORTHY MOVES A STEP CLOSER At the June monthly meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District it was revealed that the Council has submitted an application under the 2026 Town & Village Renewal Scheme, Building Acquisition Measure, to purchase a premises in Templeshannon for the purpose of a Family Resource Centre.

ROUNDABOUT SPONSORSHIP SCHEME The Roundabout Sponsorship Scheme has now been successfully completed. Local businesses have partnered with the Council to sponsor roundabouts across the town, enhancing landscaping and presentation, improving the public realm, and facilitating a promotional opportunity for participating sponsors. The scheme has delivered visible improvements and will continue to be reviewed for future expansion opportunities.

A further Expression of Interest will be advertised in the coming weeks for Scarawalsh Roundabout.

A mixture of perennials and pollinator friendly shrubs have been planted thanks to the hard-working Enniscorthy Municipal District outdoor crew and the Community Employment Scheme who carried out the works.

Enniscorthy Town Planting Programme

Beautiful display at The Prom.

The Enniscorthy Municipal District Planting Programme has been completed – 120 planters were filled and planted in various locations around the town including Drumgoold, Springvalley, Promenade, Market Square, Abbey Square, and at the Railway Station.

Boxes were placed on the municipal building and on the railings in Abbey Square.

The Slaney Nature Trail, St Senan’s Park, and Vinegar Hill trails and main entrance to the laneway have all been cut back.

The Country Walk is being trimmed back at present.

A new fence was erected around the Nuns’ Graveyard for the recent anniversary of the Presentation Sisters who celebrated 250 years of their order on 19th June.

Black street furniture has been powerwashed. Painting of the bollards and black flowerpots has commenced along with varnishing the benches. n

Significant milestone for Gorey Market House Regeneration SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE REACHED WITH CONTRACT SIGNED FOR GOREY MARKET HOUSE REGENERATION PROJECT Tuesday, 30th June 2026, marked a major milestone for Gorey with the formal signing of contracts to commence construction on the Gorey Market House Regeneration Project.

Following a comprehensive public procurement and tender process, Nevin Construction has been awarded the contract to deliver the landmark regeneration of one of Gorey's most significant historic buildings. The contract signing marks the official commencement of the project's construction phase. Located in the heart of the town, the Market House is the oldest building in Gorey and one of the oldest surviving market houses in Ireland. It is now set to begin an exciting new chapter as a vibrant centre for culture, creativity, and community.

Cllr Mary Farrell, Cathaoirleach, Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District, stated that the contract signing marked an important new chapter for Gorey Market House. ”The regeneration of this historic building for community and cultural use means we are not only preserving its heritage but transforming the

building for the future as a vibrant hub for creativity, connectivity, and shared experiences. We look forward to working with Nevin Construction on the delivery of this landmark initiative.”

Designed in line with the New European Bauhaus principles of sustainability, inclusivity and beauty, the regenerated Market House will provide flexible indoor and outdoor spaces for exhibitions, performances, workshops, markets, community events, and cultural activities while carefully preserving the building's rich architectural and historical heritage.

This project is co-funded by the government of Ireland, the European Union, through the ERDF Southern, Eastern and Midland Regional Programme 2021–27, and Wexford County Council.

The project has attracted national and European recognition as a leading example of heritage-led regeneration and adaptive reuse. Since 2025, representatives from Wexford County Council and Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District have showcased the project at New European Bauhaus events in Kilkenny and Brussels, including the New European Bauhaus Festival in June this year, highlighting Gorey Market House as an exemplar of community-led heritage renewal, sustainability, and placemaking.

The signing of contracts represents the

culmination of years of planning, consultation, and collaboration between Wexford County Council, elected members, funding partners, and the local community of Gorey and north Wexford. Construction is expected to commence in the coming weeks, bringing the long-awaited transformation of this iconic landmark into reality.

Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Cllr Lisa McDonald, said, “I am delighted to see the significant investment in the Gorey Market House of €7m under Thrive EU Funding with the Southern Regional Assembly, matched by a further €2m investment by Wexford County Council. The project will sensitively restore and repurpose the historic building as a dedicated space for the community of Gorey and north Wexford. It will safeguard the Gorey Market House architectural heritage and establish a sustainable, inclusive public amenity for all.

Once completed, the restored Market House will become a vibrant civic destination in the heart of Gorey, creating a welcoming space for residents, visitors, community groups, and creatives. The indoor and outdoor spaces will support exhibitions, performances, workshops, markets, cultural events, and community activities, ensuring this important heritage building continues to serve Gorey for generations to come. n

Uisce Éireann marked a significant occasion for Enniscorthy with the recent completion of a €19 million upgrade to the Enniscorthy Regional Water Supply Scheme.

This transformative project will now provide a more reliable and sustainable water supply for homes and businesses across Enniscorthy and surrounding areas, while unlocking future growth and development opportunities.

Speaking at the water treatment plant overlooking the town, Minister James Browne TD noted the critical importance of the investment for the local community and the town’s prosperous future:

“The completion of this project is very positive news for the people of Enniscorthy, who will benefit from a more reliable and resilient water supply. A safe and dependable water supply is fundamental to family and community life.

“Investment in our infrastructure is also investment in housing as future homes are dependent on key water services.

This project’s completion will future proof Enniscorthy for continued growth, and supports a thriving local economy which delivers lasting benefits for the wider region.

“The next investment in the town’s water infrastructure begins in early July with the

expansion of the pipe that brings treated water from the upgraded water treatment plant into town. It’s great to see ongoing progress and investment dedicated to enhancing Enniscorthy’s water supply.”

Uisce Éireann Portfolio Manager Diane Carroll added: “This major upgrade marks a fantastic milestone in securing a safe and reliable water supply for Enniscorthy... It is an essential step in ensuring that Enniscorthy can continue to grow in a sustainable and positive way.

“I also want to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support and patience throughout the delivery of this vital project.”

Galbally's new Pilgrims' Path Graveyards are not sad at all. “They’re happy places,” said the late Hilary Murphy, journalist and author of Families of County Wexford, which became a runaway success in its time.

For many, walking and pottering around the graves and laying flowers can be sad. For many it can be fascinating, like reading a Who’s Who, studying the genealogy of those buried, the history of the area, recollections of the stories of the rich and poor, struggles and laughs, and the iconography of who had a good inscription on a headstone or a Celtic Cross over their grave. A Celtic Cross meant wealth and status.

Fr Michael Byrne, the PP of Bree, and parish committee members saw that the cemetery in their curacy of Galbally – the village in the dead centre of Co. Wexford – needed to be cheered up and made more accessible. It is, after all, significant: donated by the benevolent landlords, the Talbots, it has a bell dating back to God knows when, had sev-

that older people are enabled to more easily visit the graves of their loved ones, neighbours, and friends.

They chose one of their own to do the job: the athlete John Egan, a former teacher, whose chest is laden with national medals and European Masters medals for race-walking. By the way, race-walking is one of the toughest sports in the world.

John Egan, formerly of Barmoney, Ballyhogue, is Egan Creative Solutions of Glenbrien. And so John, the PP, and the committee marked out a plan, did the groundwork, and got a couple of guys to pour concrete. John smoothed it all out, even the very tricky bits, himself on hands and knees. He completed it within a few weeks and lo and behold just before the Galbally Pattern or Patron Day in mid-June, a total of 200 white smooth metres of concreted path appeared all around the cemetery. It’s beautiful.

A Persistent Woodpecker at Caroreigh Locals in Caroreigh, near Camross, are trying to figure out why a great-spotted woodpecker is pecking like mad on a steel ESB pole there.

Great-spotted woodpeckers had been missing from Ireland for many years.

Now they’re back and there are many across County Wexford.

Atticus and locals wondered why, instead of wood, a woodpecker would peck persistently at a steel pole property of ESB Networks. So Atticus took to the internet to find out.

One reason is to find food. A second is to make new nests. Woodpeckers don’t use old nests – they make new nests in each breeding season. And the third reason they would peck at a steel pole is to

slaney news communicate. Woodpeckers don’t sing.

They drum. They like metal surfaces like the steel in an ESB pole because they amplify the sound.

Drumming – rapid pecking on a tree, a gutter, or a chimney – acts as a territorial signal saying to potential mates: “I’m strong, healthy, and available.” Or to rivals: “This area is taken.”

It would make sense for woodpeckers in Caroreigh and Camross and Clongeen areas to behave like that. In other words, “This sacred place is ours, Stay away.

We’re booked up!”

Mairead O’Gorman, whose book Mr and Mrs Bluetit about the life of a family of bluetits at her home, saw the woodpecker of Caroreigh. She and her husband, Noel, were famously featured on RTÉ TV’s Nationwide.

Mairead said the region is teeming with wildlife including squirrels, badgers, pine-martens, foxes, scaldcrows, magpies, and small birds of all kinds including sparrows and bluetits. “All of animal life is here in Caroreigh,” she said. Atticus agrees. Don’t disturb the birds there, especially the woodpeckers.

But Att likes to talk face to face with people who’ll try to understand his needs, notice that he has a bad hip, and hope that in that context they will guide him to see the wonders of Wexford, Enniscorthy, Ferns, Duncannon, Kennedy Park, New Ross, Great Island, the Hook, Fethard on Sea, Great Island, and other parts of the county.

Back down the Quay with his bad hip and pained foot he went in search of ‘the Arts Centre’. A helpful fellow walker told him, “Alongside Mary’s Bar and the new library.”

At last. Found it. Relief. Now imagine cognitive dissonance when he tried the door of the Arts Centre. It was closed! A notice on the glass said ‘Closed on Mondays’. Ironically, through the glass, he saw a sign saying ‘Discover Ireland’.

“Discover me armpits,” he said to himself. The sign said closed on Sundays too and on other days closed at 5:00pm.

Closed Saturdays at 4.00pm.

He traipsed to the new Library around the corner opposite Mary’s Bar, and asked how he could find a travel agent – he said he wanted to see The Saltees. A travel agent would do it, he thought.

The most helpful librarian said, “Go out there, turn to the left, left again, go down a bit, you’ll see the Buglers and it’s along there somewhere by the Sky and the Ground and the Holy Grail. It’s only ten minutes.”

“Or, go down to Monck Street, there’s a travel agent there. It’s closer,” said the assistant, learning about Atticus’s bad hip.

So off old Att went in search, dragging his hip. No street sign for Monck Street.

Nothing except an electric cord sticking out where one might be.

A passerby pointed him to Maggie May’s pub. At last! Up and down Monck Street twice he walked with his bad hip.

After all that, he found no travel agents there.

Your expectations can become your greatest disappointment.

Miles to Kilmore Quay Old Att was in London with three Sunday Times journalists – two writers and a cameraman – back in the 1970s. They told him their editor had sent them to Ireland to do a holiday feature that would include the ‘beautiful’ Kilmore Quay. They landed at Rosslare, drove their car in search, reached a signpost which gave them direction to Kilmore Quay saying it was 9 miles. (It was ‘miles’ in those days). However, when they reached the next crossroads, the signpost said ‘14 miles’. They felt lost.

He remembered his old colleagues from the Sunday Times and the words of late Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds, who sued them and won a penny for his troubles.

In 1994, after Fianna Fáil and Labour’s fortunes plummeted, Albert famously said, “It’s the little things that trip you up.”

Instead of WCC, Let the Chamber Run It A hard-working and dutiful entrepreneur, beleaguered by bureaucracy and red tape in his endeavours to build business in County Wexford, told Atticus we should let the Chamber of Commerce take over the County Council and run it.

Old Att has had his run-ins with the old CoCo, but hastens to defend this noble local authority which has its imperfections but has served the county reasonably well for several lifetimes. Some departments are brilliant, others are slumbering waiting for the pension.

Atticus recalls bitterly his experience of bringing a group of potential investors to the county. They were left to loll around, trying to rest their feet standing against walls while waiting half an hour past the appointed time for the powerful executive.

He recalls too his two-year wait for a response to an email and the feelingless treatment he received from some civil and public servants.

Those experiences are countered by simple graces such as the kindness of a traffic warden who allowed Atticus to drive around the packed car park, and pause as long as he stayed in the car until his wife came back from collecting her shopping.

Such humane and common-sense solutions can be more revenue-generating long term than time spent searching for parking a mile away, carrying heavy bags for a long distance, and being fined.

But whoa, wait a minute lads and lassies, it’s not our colloquially named Bree Hall, which was recently grandly named the Bree Community Centre. It’s ‘Bree Hall’, a member of the world-famous Indiana Fever women’s WNBA basketball team, USA, and a teammate of the amazing Caitlin Elizabeth Clark. Caitlin must be of Irish descent.

Last month in County Hall, Wexford, Enniscorthy Tidy Town's Chairman Jonathon Hughes (second from left in above photo) was on hand to pick up the 'Snap Into Action' Community Group Award on behalf of the group's hardworking volunteers.

Jonathon explained: “In April our volunteers snapped into action and held an Easter Monday Spring Clean and River Clean-up. We recycled 716 items in total and removed 116 bags of rubbish. 116! Major roads funding secured Significant funding for Storm Chandra road repairs has been secured for Co. Wexford and has been welcomed by Minister James Browne TD. €13.49m for the county is the highest allocation for any county in the country.

Minister James Browne says: “I have pushed for this for months since the storm critically hit so many parts of Wexford this year, and I wasn’t going to accept anything less than a serious allocation so that Wexford County Council can get on with the job for people.

“This funding is critical – it’s not a ‘nice to have’. It will help restore roads that suffered significant damage many of which have become dangerous for both walkers and our motorists.

“Many of our local communities have experienced disruption as a result, and repairing this infrastructure is essential to ensuring safe and reliable access for families, businesses, and emergency services.

“I will continue to work with Wexford County Council and the government to ensure these repairs are completed as quickly as possible."

Browne added that continued investment in local and regional roads is vital to improving connectivity and supporting rural communities throughout County Wexford.

Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow–Wexford, Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin, has also welcomed the allocation of €13.49 million in additional funding while warning that the funding falls short of what is needed to properly address the scale of deterioration across the county.

Speaking on the announcement, Deputy Ó Súilleabháin said: “I have consistently raised the poor state of rural roads in Wexford, particularly across North Wexford, with the Minister for Transport in Leinster House. Communities have been left dealing with unsafe and deteriorating roads for far too long, and this funding is the result of sustained pressure.”

“This €13.49 million allocation is very

welcome and will deliver much-needed improvements. However, it is clear that more funding is required. Wexford County Council has indicated that the true cost of bringing all rural roads back to a safe and acceptable standard is closer to €20 million, leaving a significant shortfall.”

He added that the government must now step up further: “Years of underinvestment in rural infrastructure cannot be fixed with one-off announcements.

The government must commit to bridging this gap and putting in place a longterm funding plan that ensures roads are properly maintained year after year.”

Deputy Ó Súilleabháin concluded: “While this funding will make a real difference on the ground, it cannot be the last word. Rural communities in Wexford deserve safe, reliable infrastructure, and I will continue to press the government until that is fully delivered.”

Senator Cathal Byrne (Fine Gael), Seanad Government Chief Whip, has welcomed the €13.49m emergency funding to address the significant damage from the severe rainfall, flooding, and high winds associated with Storm Chandra on 26-27 January 2026.

Senator Byrne said: “This is a significant

increase on the €5m package provided to Wexford County Council following the storm damage in December 2021.

Storm Chandra caused considerable disruption and damage throughout the county, impacting families, farmers, businesses and visitors. This funding will allow Wexford County Council to prioritise and complete vital repair works, restoring safe and reliable road access for our communities.”

“I have consistently raised the urgent need for additional resources with government Ministers since the storm struck – including directly with Tánaiste Simon Harris during his visit to Wexford, where it was one of my key asks – and I am delighted that these calls have been heard and acted upon. This announcement demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting rural communities and maintaining critical local infrastructure.”

“While this is a very welcome development, I will continue to work with Wexford County Council, local representatives, and the government to secure further investment in our road network and other key infrastructure projects that will build resilience against future weather events and support the long-term development of County Wexford.” n

Foley’s Garage gets a tidy-up A major blot on Enniscorthy’s copybook, especially when it comes to national Tidy Towns judging, is the huge eyesore that is known locally as Foley’s Garage, Spring Valley.

At the end of June, Enniscorthy Municipal District carried out a very welcome tidy-up of the front of the site which has made a big difference.

One part of the building appears to be ‘Sold’ and Wexford Co. Council (WCC) is attempting to find out the name of the owner of the remainder and has placed a sign to that effect on the building (see photo opposite). As the Council does not own the property it cannot engage in physical repairs or decoration of the building itself.

It would be great to see WCC take over this eyesore as soon as possible, give it a makeover, and put it on the market with a view to getting some commercial use into it. n

VINEGAR HILL

Pre Application Consultation has been submitted to ACP.

New pathways and seating have been provided over recent months, along with new panels detailing the experience of the battle of Vinegar Hill in 1798 in both Irish and English. Parking and access improvements to Vinegar Hill are being investigated by Wexford Co. Council (WCC). The Enniscorthy East Community Development Association believes it has identified a site that could be used to allow access to the Hill for buses etc, and could potentially house a new welcome centre/ coffee shop/toilets, etc and have contacted EMD officials about it.

Phase 2 – Flood Relief Works. This phase of the scheme will include the construction of the remaining flood relief measures for the town. The next steps are: Assess alternative design options in detail and shortlist these for consultation. Identify the preferred scheme to be brought forward for planning. Decide the appropriate planning route. Prepare planning documents and submit for planning approval. Ecology surveys are being kept up to date, such as wintering bird surveys. The application to MARA for the pre-submission meeting was submitted on the 8/05/2026.

ST JOHN’S COMMUNITY WELLBEING & ACTIVITY GARDEN This new green space, including an amphitheatre, is a vibrant community hub that is safe, accessible and welcoming to all. Some months ago, a new walking route around St. John’s Community Hospital campus was officially opened.

ENNISCORTHY TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION PROJECTS Market Square Project: The Part 8 process for the Market Square project was concluded on 9th Sept. 2024. The design of the scheme has been amended to reflect the outcome of the Part 8 process. An updated cost estimate for the project has been prepared. Everything is in order for upcoming grant funding call.

Castle Quarter Project: Planning stage design for the Castle Quarter Project is also now complete, and the Part 8 process concluded successfully on 13th April 2026. The former Castle nightclub has been acquired, and a CPO process to acquire other adjacent lands is in progress. Consultants for detailed design, procurement and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Templeshannon scheme.

An application for the whole of the Market Square and Town Centre Regeneration Project, along with the enabling and demolition works for the Castle Quarter project, was made under the new Town and Cities Regeneration Investment fund on 1st May 2026.

Templeshannon Regeneration Project: Consultants for preliminary design, planning, detailed design, procurement and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Market Square scheme. An application was submitted on 1st May 2026 for the project as part of the Category 1A Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund call seeking funding of €150,000 for project development and design team fees.

ENNISCORTHY CCTV A total of 22 CCTV cameras have been installed at different locations within Enniscorthy Town. The system is now live.

Bunclody CCTV Project: The system is expected to go live by September.

ENNISCORTHY SPORTS HUB A contractor, Kevin Thorpe Ltd, is now working on the second phase (sports equipment storage area, open space area, changing rooms, toilets, showers, and a small office) of the Sports Hub. The project should be complete by this coming September.

The second phase has been made possible through investment of €450,000 by The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Wexford Co. Council providing funding of €150,000.

ENNISCORTHY NORTH BUSINESS DISTRICT (Old Dublin Road) Some works have been carried out in recent years on the Enniscorthy North Business District where over 2,000 people currently work. Further funding is required for the active travel elements of the masterplan for the area.

The Scheme has a total approved budget of €51m approx. On completion, it is expected to protect 326 properties – 159 homes and 167 businesses.

BUNCLODY PARK A Stage 2 Natura Impact Statement, plans and particulars were submitted to An Bord Pleanála under Section 177AE. The Board was satisfied that the proposed development would not adversely affect the integrity of the European Site (the Slaney River Valley Special area of Conservation) in view of the Site’s conservation objectives. The application was approved with conditions at the end of February. WCC Property Section has signed contracts with the landowner to acquire lands for this project. Wexford County Council has appointed MGM Quantity Surveyors to prepare an Order of Magnitude cost estimate, to prepare for application for funds under the next Town and Villages funding call. A design team will be appointed from a framework established on foot of the Market Square/Templeshannon competition.

PAIRC NA GABHAR BUNCLODY Part 8 Planning Permission was granted on 13th April 2026. The project will progress when funding is sourced.

RAFTER STREET PEDESTRIANISATION EMD is now strictly enforcing the pedestrianisation. New signage has been erected stating current byelaw times – between 10.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. The possibility of extending the pedestrianisation hours to cover Saturdays and Sundays will be looked at.

LIBRARIES Under WCC’s three-year capital programme (2026-2028), €4.5m will go towards a new library in Enniscorthy, and €3.1m for Bunclody Library.

ALL-WEATHER ASTRO PITCH, ROSS ROAD The Part 8 planning process for the proposed changing room facilities at the Astro pitch has been completed and formally approved. ENNISCORTHY TRAILS Works are ongoing on design and planning to extend the existing town trails network to link to the Ringwood and Borodale trails.

COLUMBARIUM WALL Work on the new Columbarium Wall in Enniscorthy Lawn Cemetery has commenced.

There will be 20 niches in the wall. Price per niche to be determined.

BALLYHOGUE COMMUNITY HUB The project has an expected completion date of June 2027.

MURPHY FLOODS SITE

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

This newly opened carpark adds 37 carparking spaces for the town. The site is valued at €280,000. Wexford Co. Council is committed to the long-term development of the site on a commercial basis; and so it will be placed on the open market at some stage in the future.

€200,000 has been secured for pedestrian crossings and traffic calming outside the Enniscorthy Community College on the Milehouse Road. This also includes funding for traffic calming from Forgelands into Bellefield Road past Lidl and Aldi.

TURRET ROCKS A Part 8 Planning Application is being prepared for the overall plan. The Playground project is at design stage and will be funded by Wexford Co. Council itself. Design and costings have been received for the Skatepark for which an application is being prepared for a Sports Capital grant this year.

ENNISCORTHY FLOOD RELIEF SCHEME The Scheme is now proceeding on a phased basis.

Phase 1 – Bridgeworks. This phase of the project will include the construction of the new River Slaney Bridge, the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge, and the construction of a new pedestrian bridge in the town centre. Public consultation on the preferred option for Phase 1 took place late last year. An application for planning approval for Phase 1 is to be submitted in Q3 2026. Refinement of the design of the proposed pedestrian bridge is being carried out to enhance the structure visually.

Traffic modelling is being carried for the revised road layouts and traffic management following the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge and the provision of the new Road Bridge. The design team had preapplication meeting with MARA to discuss Marine Area Consent (MAC). MARA indicated that the application for a MAC can run concurrently with the planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP). A request for a

BLACKSTAIRS Wexford Co. Council has been awarded almost €50,000 to fund a feasibility study for a walking and cycling trail connecting Bunclody, Kiltealy, Killanne, Templeduigan and Ballywilliam.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK PHASE 2 The Technical Consultancy Services Contract has been awarded for Stage (i) to (v) design services. Site investigations are complete, and design work is ongoing. The tender for construction works was published March 2026. Tenders have been received and appointment of main works contractor is anticipated in June 2026.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK – IDA ADVANCE FACTORY A planning application for a proposed advance factory building in Enniscorthy Technology Park was submitted in December 2025. Final grant of planning permission was issued in March 2026.

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE At the June meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District it was revealed that the Council has submitted an application under the 2026 Town & Village Renewal Scheme, Building Acquisition Measure, to purchase a premises in Templeshannon for the purposes of a Family Resource Centre. n

Starting young!

Following the June meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District, a group of pupils from St Senan's Primary School Student Council visited the Council chamber to learn a bit about local democracy. And who knows, there could be a couple of future Councillors among the enthusiastic group!

The pupils were warmly welcomed by then Cathaoirleach Barbara-Anne Murphy who presented them with certificates and spoke to them about the important work of the Council. The students also had the opportunity to try on the Chain of Office and share their ideas on improvements they would like to see in the town.

The long-neglected East side of Enniscorthy is certainly making up for lost time thanks to local people organising themselves and advocating for improved public realm and services, and with support from Enniscorthy Community Alliance, Enniscorthy East Community Development, Templeshannon Community Centre, GreenTechHQ, Enniscorthy Municipal District, and Wexford Co. Council.

The Eastside has seen increased levels of cleaning and painting, planting, murals, new archways, window boxes, wall panels, laneway cleanups, removal of rubbish from black spots in the area, etc. Wexford Co. Council is advancing plans for Templeshannon regeneration and a huge new development at Turret Rocks. A new Community Centre is being planned. Design work on a new playground is underway. On the cultural side, Wexford Local Development is involved in a number of projects, as is well known folklorist Michael Fortune. And two new choirs have sprung up in the area!

Vinegar Hill has seen a number of improvements including impressive new information panels, and new pathways have been provided over recent months with new directional signage to follow.

“50 years at the bench” Sustainable Enniscorthy met recently with Paul Campbell, owner of Pauls Shoe Repairs which has been operating for twenty-three years on Church Street. As we sit on the shop windowsill (a usual perch for Paul, often playing his banjo, when he’s not working at the bench) our chat is peppered with many hellos and good natured banter with passers-by.

Paul is the fifth generation in his family in the shoemaking and shoe repair trade. He started work aged 13 in Campbells Corner in Dundrum village, Dublin, learning his skills alongside his father and the other benchmen.

While previous generations of Campbells were primarily shoemakers (Paul’s grandfather made all the shoes for the Queen’s coronation), shoe repair has become the mainstay, with shoemaking now quite niche given the mass production of shoes.

Paul has seen many changes over his career. A big one is the decline of skilled tradesmen in the sector, with now only a handful working across the country. Paul can think of at least six businesses that didn’t reopen after COVID, a reflection of the average age of those in the trade and the lack of succession. Another change has been the materials in shoes. When EVAs (lightweight polymer that functions like rubber which helps with cushioning and waterproofing) came into shoe manufacturing during the 1970s, new techniques like vulcanising had to be learned.

Paul not only repairs shoes and boots, but also leather bags, purses, and has a key-cutting service. In fact, he’d try repairing anything as he loves a challenge. He told a story of fixing a damaged shoe (gnawed by a dog) so well that the owner swore he had bought a new shoe to replace the damaged one! Paul has had people travel from all parts of the country and even bringing riding boots home from Germany to be repaired. As to the reasons for getting items repaired, Paul finds it’s linked to the quality/expense of the item, its sentimental value, or just the fact that regardless of what they cost, if the shoes are comfortable the owner wants them repaired.

While Paul is City & Guilds trained and a member of the Society of Master Shoe Repairers, there isn’t any formal training or national apprenticeship scheme in Ireland anymore. Paul has looked for expressions of interest for apprentices from the local secondary schools, but no takers so far. The lack of formal training is a challenge for the country overall, as we risk losing this skillset and repair service if it is not supported, at a time when government policy is to grow a circular economy and keep our products in use for longer.

A large crowd came together in Enniscorthy on Friday, 19th June 2026, to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Presentation Sisters Order and also 200 years since the Order arrived in Enniscorthy.

Refreshments were served mid-afternoon in The Presentation Centre where the attendees were able to meet some of the Presentation Nuns who lived in the Convent and worked in the school in Enniscorthy.

This casual get-together was followed by a Blessing of the Graves (patron) in the Nun's Graveyard in the Orchard Peace Park where 60 nuns are buried.

At 5.30pm a Eucryphia tree was planted on the grounds of the Cathedral, and the special afternoon of celebration concluded with Mass in St Aidan's Cathedral. n

Local Peace Commissioner Patrick Higgins outlines the Civic Duty of a Peace Commissioner: Supporting Grassroots Justice in Ireland.

As our daily lives become more tangled in paperwork and bureaucratic processes, navigating the legal system can feel overwhelming. For many residents across Kilmuckridge, Gorey, and the wider north Wexford area, knowing where to turn to get an official document signed often causes unnecessary stress.

This is where the role of a Peace Commissioner becomes vital. Appointed by the Minister for Justice under Section 88 of the Courts of Justice Act 1924, Peace Commissioners provide a crucial, cost-free, and local link within our communities.

Understanding the specific legal responsibilities of this role highlights why grassroots legal administration remains essential for the future of our local towns and villages.

What is a Peace Commissioner?

It is important to clarify what the role is not: a Peace Commissioner is not a judge, a magistrate, or a solicitor. They do not preside over court hearings, hand down legal judgments, or offer professional legal advice.

Instead, they serve as an accessible, authorised, and impartial figure operating right at the heart of the community. They ensure that every day legal documents can be officially verified and processed without requiring a timeconsuming trip to a formal courthouse or a costly visit to a solicitor.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AT A GLANCE: •

Enniscorthy’s Orchard Peace Park – a great place to play GREAT TO SEE EVENTS HAPPENING AT THE ORCHARD PEACE PARK IN ENNISCORTHY, AND NEW SIGNAGE ALSO. New interpretive signage has been installed at both entrances to The Orchard Peace Park, providing clear wayfinding, highlighting key features, and improving the visitor experience. The panels include a site map, trail information, and details on the UN Peace Memorial, Labyrinth, and viewing points, offering a more accessible and informative journey through the park.

PLAY DAY ON WEDNESDAY 15TH JULY IN ORCHARD PEACE PARK Following the successful event last year, Enniscorthy Municipal District will host a Play Day in the Orchard Peace Park on Wednesday 15th July from 1:30pm – 3:30pm.

Local artist and facilitator Anita Petry will curate the event with artists Jenny Ruddy and Elder Trindade providing creative art and play opportunities for children and young people. A fun afternoon of play and creativity is promised with tug of war, hopscotch, sack race, face painting, and many more activities.

This year there will be the addition of a sensory space to allow for those with sensory issues to take some time out if needed.

The Orchard Peace Park is a 1.2 hectare facility in the heart of Enniscorthy town, is fully accessible from both entry points – Irish Street and at The Presentation Arts Centre (which also has accessible toilets). It is the site of a UN Peace Memorial and the Presentation Sisters’ graveyard. It contains various interesting features, seating, impressive trees, musical instruments and other play elements, and stunning views of Vinegar Hill and the Slaney Valley.

Retired scientists, technicians, farm workers, and administration and general staff from the 1950s, ’60s and ‘70s gathered at Johnstown Castle for the unveiling of a garden seat to commemorate the Wexford scientist whose interest in soil fertility led to the transformation of Irish agriculture from extreme poverty on farms after World War II to a relative plenty today.

Dr Tom Walsh, native of Piercestown, known fondly as ‘The Doc’, recognised ‘as a rare genius’, winner of several distinctions in Ireland and across the world, was born in 1914 and died in July 1988.

He was a major contributor to the groundbreaking government policy document Economic Development by T.K. Whitaker which turned Ireland from an almost closed economy to one that was wide open to trade with the rest of the world.

More than seventy of his old colleagues, including some of the most eminent and decorated scientists in the world, came along to the Irish Agricultural Museum for the unveiling by his daughter Rosemary Buckley, née Walsh, of a steel garden seat specially designed and built by Kent Stainless in his honour.

The garden seat, beneath trees at the rere of the Irish Agricultural Museum, faces across the lake to twin turrets in the ornamental garden of the castle.

Prominent among the guests there was Dr Ned Culleton (96), another native of Piercestown and friend and colleague of Dr Tom. He is known far and wide as the originator of the Irish National Heritage Park at Ferrycarrig. Together with his authorship of several books including the three-volume County Wexford townlands series On Our Own Ground (Ed. Celestine Murphy), he was coauthor with Rosemary Buckley née Walsh of the book on the life of Dr Tom Walsh, appropriately titled, A Man with a Mission and subtitled Harnessing the Power of Science for Irish Agriculture.

Among the other guests were Dr Austin O’Sullivan, founder of the Irish Agricultural Museum, Dr Brian Coulter, soil scientist and author, and Dr Noel Culleton, the former head of Johnstown

Castle, editor of several international journals, co-author of the book, Soil Matters – the Story of Science at Johnstown Castle, and also author of four books on classical music composers.

Professor Frank O’Mara, the national director of Teagasc, and John Spink, Teagasc, head of the 900-acre lands of the Johnstown Castle estate, Jess Sinnott, acting manager of the Irish Heritage Trust, managers of the Castle and its grounds, Willie French, chairman of the Irish Agricultural Museum, and Milo Miller, curator, were there.

Staff members there from Dr Tom Walsh’s time included wellknown Frank Codd, Davy Noonan, Nicky Hayes, Martin Flynn, Vincent Staples, Aileen Cardiff and Frank McRory, the chef.

Unable to attend were Dr Aidan Conway of Ballycullane, former director of Johnstown Castle, recovering having been in hospital, and researcher Willie Murphy of Tomhaggard, former head of grassland in Johnstown Castle in the 1970s.

The scientists were highly regarded and their documents and findings from their research in Ireland and in many other countries are today consulted in university libraries, in government departments, and among practitioners across the world.

But the most eminent scientist and also the most revered of them all by colleagues and by peers was Dr Tom Walsh who was born Dr Tom Walsh (Agriculture) (1914-1988) was one of two internationally distinguished Co. Wexford people of that time with similar names. Both had attended Wexford CBS. The other was Dr Tom Walsh (Medicine), (1911-1988), of George’s Street, Wexford town, a physician at Wexford General Hospital, who was the first chairman of the Wexford Opera Festival, founded in 1951.

into a small farm not far from the village of Piercestown. He attended CBS Wexford and from there won a scholarship to UCD, then the Albert College in Glasnevin, Dublin. He became a lecturer there and among those he mentored was Stephen Cullinan, first secretary of Macra na Feirme and first editor of the Irish Farmer’s Journal.

He joined the Department of Agriculture in 1945, and in 1948 James Dillon TD, then Minister for Agriculture, opened the national soil laboratories in Johnstown Castle with Dr Tom Walsh in charge. Dr Walsh was later given the highest academic honours: DSC (NUI), ScD (Trinity College), Doctor of Laws (NCEA), Member Royal Irish Academy (MRIA), Fellowship of American Association for Advancement of Science, the Boyle medal, and awards from the French Society of Soil Science, Higher Council of Scientific Research Spain, Francis New medal, Browning American Society of Agronomy, Life membership of the RDS, and the Freedom of Wexford.

He saw the benefit of collaboration with scientists in other countries. Today, Johnstown Castle hosts 24 students from different countries who are studying for Masters and PhDs. They are participants in the Walsh Scholarship Scheme so named in his honour.

Milo Miller, curator of the Irish Agricultural Museum, welcomed the attendance to the unveiling ceremony.

Professor Frank O’Mara, a scientist, the national director of Teagasc, the agriculture and food authority, addressing the attendance said the inspiration for the new science laboratory specialising in soils and environmental research, opened last year at Johnstown Castle at a cost of €12 million, “came from the pioneering work of Dr Tom Walsh in the 1950s, 1960s, and

Willie French, chairman of the Irish Agricultural Museum, said: “The work of Dr Tom Walsh given charge of soil testing when the Irish State took possession of Johnstown Castle, gifted by the Lakin family in 1945, led to massive improvement in the soil fertility of Irish soils and this in turn set the foundations of our modern agricultural industry.

“Today’s Johnstown Castle owes a debt of gratitude to Dr Tom. The castle, the research laboratories, the grounds of more than 1,000 acres, the Irish Agricultural Museum, and the presence of the Irish Heritage Trust and hundreds of jobs here and in the local economy have come about directly because of Dr Tom.” – M.F.

Templeshannon Childcare Centre celebrates 50 years Helen McFarland, Templeshannon Childcare Centre Manager, speaks about a recent special anniversary at the Centre: Fifty years ago, a small group of pioneering women started an early years service, offering vital support to children and families in our community. Their journey was not always easy. They faced many challenges, moving from place to place and often receiving very little financial reward for their dedication. Yet they persevered, driven by a commitment to children, families, and community.

Today, Templeshannon Childcare proudly celebrates 50 years in the heart of the community.

Located in an area that has experienced significant disadvantage and is home to people from many cultures and nationalities, this service has played an important role in supporting children and families over generations. That role remains just as important today.

As part of the celebrations, we had the privilege of hearing stories from one of our founding members, as well as memories and reflections from past staff members who helped shape the service over the decades. Their stories brought to life the challenges, achievements, friendships, and sense of purpose that have been at the heart of Templeshan-

non Childcare since its beginnings.

If I were to sum up the emotions and reflections from the day, they would be resilience, strength, adaptability, dedication, and a deep connection to community.

It was a truly lovely coming together of community, bringing together former and current staff, families, children, committee members, and friends for a day of connection, reflection, and intergenerational celebration. We celebrated not only the remarkable women who started it all, but everyone who has contributed to the story of Templeshannon Childcare over the past 50 years.

Here's to the next chapter and to many more years of supporting children and families in our community. n

Our day in the sun Words & pics by Maria Nolan After twenty-one weeks of ComMUniversity every Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Enniscorthy Library studying Social Analysis, Criminology, History and Child Psychology, thirteen participants had their day in the sun on 25th June 2026 when they were presented with their Certificates at Maynooth University.

And what a day in the sun it was, in temperatures in the late twenties this enthusiastic group basked in the golden glow of achievement at one of Ireland’s oldest seats of learning.

The ComMUniversity programme is a partnership between Wexford Local Development, Maynooth University, South East Technological University, and Enniscorthy Library and is funded by SICAP (Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme) and as a participant I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The focus of the Programme is to instil a hunger for learning by providing third level lectures on a range of subjects delivered by top class Maynooth tutors over a period of twentyone weeks at a local community venue.

When nominated to speak as a representative of the Enniscorthy group, I was honoured to say that I had experienced the easiest and more enjoyable learning of my life through the Programme.

Our group was diverse in age, background, and nationality all of which contributed immensely to our engagement, debate and sometimes shall we say strong differences of opinion, awakening a deeper understanding and appreciation of other people’s views and beliefs especially those not of Enniscorthy, or Wexford, or even Ireland.

In the context of the four study modules we not only learned how we see Ireland, how Ireland sees and relates to the rest of the world, but also how people from other parts of the world see us and how easy or difficult it can be for them to integrate into our predominately Gaelic society, warts and jewels and all.

The past twenty-one weeks were not just a reintroduction to education and knowledge, it was an eye-opener into our Ireland of today.

The past that those of us of a certain vintage talked about was like another country to those younger participants, and the worlds that they shared were often actually other countries, with practices and customs completely alien to us and yet all of us had tremendous fun and engagement over the twenty-one weeks, with only two people dropping out, a marvellous testament to the Programme, the turors, WLD and its staff, and Enniscorthy Library and its staff.

The Programme broadened my mind, made me new friends, and whetted my appetite for further learning, and it was all free, I mean, come on, how good is that.

Plus we had a wonderful guided tour of Maynooth’s beautiful grounds, college, and cloisters and even witnessed their prize resident – the Peregrine Falcon nesting in the Clock Tower.

Ballindaggin girls meet President Hannah Ward, a young girl from Ballindaggin, Enniscorthy, was honoured with an invitation to meet the President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, after she wrote a noteworthy letter to her. Hannah was invited to bring some guests so she chose her school friends as well as a colleague from Edermine Ferry Rowing Club.

On Saturday, June 20th, Hannah, along with Trish Hipwell, Ellen Gething, Ruth Forster, and Nadia Jordan, travelled from Ballindaggin to Áras an Uachtaráin where they attended a special garden party.

The group had the privilege of meeting the President, enjoying a wonderful dinner, and listening to music in the serene surroundings of the Áras gardens. It was a memorable evening for Hannah and all who attended.

Brazil celebrates Junina at Bellefield Words & pics by Maria Nolan Bellefield GAA Complex and Rapparees/Starlights GAA Club are delighted to be able to offer the Brazilian community in Wexford a venue to gather together and celebrate one of their annual festivals – Festa Junina.

Just as the Irish formed clubs and organised get togethers in places like Liverpool, London, New York, and Sydney in the past, these new communities that make up today’s Ireland need forums to mix and mingle and enjoy their own culture.

It is important for them as communities not to lose their connection to home and to each other just as it was important for us not to forget who we were and where we came from.

Festa Junina, organised by Tatiane Espinoza and her team of workers, is in its second year now at the Bellefield Complex and is going from strength to strength, this gala jamboree is a salute to all things Brazilian.

Having the privilege of being an invited guest, I can tell you that the event is an assault on the senses, and a most pleasant one, the sights, the sounds, the smells, and the colours are magnificent.

delicious looking food, surrounded by the most vibrant, colourful, decorations, dancers in traditional costume complete with straw hats performing energetic movements to lively sounds, beautiful happy children of all ages laughing and dancing and enjoying, Festa Junina is a kaleidoscope of colour and a cacophony of sound and a truly wonderful experience.

What a day Junina is and I would like to express my sincere thanks to Tatiane for her kind invitation and compliment her and her wonderful committee for the tremendous effort expounded making the occasion special for the huge crowd in attendance.

It is imperative for all the communities in our midst to embrace and thrive in the Irish culture that they now find themselves in but it is also essential for them to have the space and the place to remember who they are and what they can offer their new country.

And thank you to Bar Manager Tomas Mahon and his wonderful staff at Bellefield for their preparations and hard work on an extremely warm day.

I said it last year, and I’m saying it again this year, I am already looking forward to Festa Junina 2027. n

Celebrating Alice’s retirement After an outstanding 19 years with Enniscorthy Credit Union, supporting its members through all walks of life, it was time last month for Enniscorthy Credit Union to say a fond farewell to Alice Culleton as she finished her time there to start a new chapter.

A spokesperson for Enniscorthy Credit Union, addressing Alice, said: “We will all miss you dearly in the office and we're so lucky to have worked alongside you. Acko launches third solo album Acko, former frontman of 90’s Dublin Indie band Grasshopper, released his third solo album on 19th of June.

Before and Then is probably Acko's most personal set of songs yet. Five of the nine songs were written in the aftermath of the tragic passing of Acko's daughter Sita in 2024.

"When Sita passed the only thing that seemed to make any sense was music," says Acko. "In a weird way I was kind of lucky to have music, I can't imagine what it would have been like without it. If someone's parents die they're an orphan, if you lose a spouse you're a widow or a widower, but if you lose a child there's no name for it so you have to create your own title and your own language to express how you feel and boy are there a lot of feelings to express. where to put all my grief and anger and hopelesness. That's probably why there's a lot of loud electric guitars on the album, mostly recorded in the small room where my studio was set up, I think I was trying to drown all my thoughts out."

Bringing life back to Captain Wafer Hall On Saturday 20th June the Captain Wafer Hall held an Open Day for the local community to visit and see the wonderful facility that is now available for local groups to hire at communityfriendly rates.

Lots of people (including the Slaney News) took advantage of the Open Day to have a look around and we were delighted to meet the new operators – the wonderful Enniscorthy Community Alliance and its manager John Jude Murphy, and board members Irene Cadogan, Brian Kehoe, Niamh Hogan, and Ed Murphy. Well known community activist Billy Murphy is also a board member.

The ECA is a registered charity dedicated to developing and enhancing the environment of Enniscorthy. Through collaboration and innnovation, the alliance focuses on sustainability, community empowerment, and public realm improvements to create a more vibrant town.

We met volunteers from Sustainable Enniscorthy, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns, and Wexford Volunteer Centre, who are all major supporters of the new venture.

by Enniscorthy’s Eddie Keogh, can do no wrong – last month they came straight in at No.1 in the Irish singles charts with 'The Sun Will Never Settle'. The band will be hoping it goes on to emulate the success of their single 'Killeagh' which is the most streamed song in Ireland this decade!

Following several years of sold-out gigs at home and abroad, Eddie, Eoghan, and Eoin last month played to some of their biggest-ever audiences including 20,000 adoring fans in St Anne’s Park, Dublin.

‘A Love Like That’ – a review ‘A Love Like That’

“If you’re dreaming about me again, at least have the decency to ask me to dance”… with lines such as this it’s easy to see why Billy Roche is a playwright operating at the top of his trade, and his play ‘A Love Like That’ is an absorbing theatrical experience from start to finish.

If you have ever wondered what happens in a library outside of the opening hours, well this is your chance to find out.

Ellen (Kate Breen) is a middle-aged spinster librarian, with an icy-demeanour and dagger-throwing eyes, that rules her soon-to-be evacuated library with an iron fist.

A woman who thrives on control, she has her world turned upside down when charming scoundrel Lance Foley (Fintan Kelly) bounds through the library door, re-entering her life after a significant hiatus.

Dragged back to her formative years, Ellen remembers watching with envy from her middle class home ‘The Dispensary’ while he and his late brother, David, ran young and wild and free on the rougher side of Shanley Lane. Back then she longed to escape the safety of

eagle-eyed parents ready to clip her wings at the first sniff of youthful enjoyment.

Cunning Lance is aware of all this, targeting a vulnerable woman (with a few bob in the bank), and wastes no time in seducing her while library regulars Aidan (Fergal Kelly) and Johnjo (Finnbarr Delaney) try to warn her off.

Lance has a pocketful of well-used chatup lines (“you look like someone from an Agatha Christie novel”) that he puts to work on Ellen, who has been waiting a lifetime to let loose, and have a taste of ‘real love’. She falls hook, line and sinker for him while her understudy, Debbie (Maeve Ennis, who lets us know repeatedly that she has a Masters Degree framed on the wall), is wise to Lance’s advances, but also has her eye on the Head Librarian job, which makes her Ellen’s adversary, rather than an ally.

‘A Love Like That’ has everything – a balanced mix of drama, humour, sadness and rage, with stellar performances all round from the cast of five.

Kate Breen brings rigidness and vulnerability aplenty to the role of the reticent librarian with wanton desire simmering beneath her skin; Maeve Ennis is ideal

as the ambitious young lady who has everything going for her, and more importantly, the time on her hands to make the most of it. Fintan Kelly dazzles in the role of larger-than-life Lance, the silvertongued devil who has a way with the ladies, but also not one family member left talking to him.

Fergal Kelly brings a melancholic calmness, and after a lifetime of book-reading oozes wisdom in his words. And then there’s Finnbarr Delaney, perfectly cast as the humorous vagabond who sleeps rough and is simply glad to avail of the free tea and biscuits the library provides.

A stand-out moment is when he doesn’t know what to do after a woman breaks down crying in front of him. Don’t worry Johnjo, it’s not something they taught us Irishmen how to do at school!

Together, Billy Roche and director Jim Ivers have produced a gem of a play in ‘A Love Like That’. Against a backdrop of classic books by Shakespeare, to tomes on war, anthropology and religion, tonight the best story worth telling unfolds on the stage in front of us.

And there’s a very important bow and arrow in the story too. Just don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s only Cupid who has his fingers on the string... n

Wexford Arts Centre and Wexford County Council Arts Department, in partnership with South East Technological University, are pleased to present idir, a solo exhibition by Blaine O’Donnell.

Blaine O’Donnell is an artist working primarily in sculpture. Taking an experimental approach to the materials and debris of photography, architecture, and geology, he investigates the art object as a site for tracing networks of relationships between objects, humans, and places.

O’Donnell’s practice is deeply rooted in material experimentation, with material agency and chance contributing to the work’s form.

Using the interplay between sculptural forms, contrasting materials and architectural context, O'Donnell stages unfamiliar encounters to explore ontological associations between disparate things, frequently returning to the fundamental question of when something becomes something else.

In 2024, Blaine O'Donnell won the EMERGENCE Visual Artist Award, a partnership initiative between Wexford Arts Centre, Wexford Co. Council Arts Department, and South East Technological University. Presented biannually, the award has a monetary value of €15,000 and includes mentorship support over the award cycle to the value of €2,000 and a solo exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre. In addition, the artist has the opportunity to engage with the Arts Campus of South East Technological University. For the EMERGENCE Award, O’Donnell drew upon geological sites in County Wexford and the architecture of the Wexford Arts Centre building.

If there's one thing June reminded me of it's that the garden never stands still. A few weeks ago, everything seemed to be settling in nicely and now it feels like the whole place has taken on a life of its own. The greenhouse is full, crops are growing at pace, and the first proper harvests have started to arrive. Not everything has gone to plan, but that's gardening in a nutshell. Just when you think you've got it figured out, something comes along to keep you humble.

The recent spell of hot weather certainly got everything growing, but my spinach had other ideas. One week I was picking fresh leaves and the next it had gone straight to seed. It was disappointing, but that's one of the downsides of growing a cool season crop during a hot spell. I'll simply sow another batch later in the summer when temperatures begin to ease.

The broccoli didn't have much luck either. Despite growing inside the greenhouse, it was absolutely savaged by pigeons. I had convinced myself it would be safe under cover, but clearly I underestimated just how determined they can be. It's a good reminder that if pigeons decide they want your brassicas, they'll usually find a way. A bit of netting would have saved me a lot of frustration.

Those moments are all part of gardening. It's easy to look at pictures online and think every-

Mark describes himself very much as a ‘hobby gardener’ who is not academically trained in horticulture. He started planting with very little knowledge a few years ago and that knowledge has now ‘mushroomed’! Mark loves sharing his passion for growing with our readers. one else's garden is producing perfect crops every year, but that simply isn't reality. Every gardener loses plants to the weather, pests, or plain bad luck. The important thing is to learn from it and move on.

Most mistakes become next year's experience.

Thankfully, there has been far more to celebrate than to complain about. The tomatoes have really taken off and are now covered in flowers. I'm especially looking forward to seeing Orion's Belt develop over the coming weeks. It's a compact tomato variety that produces beautiful striped fruit in shades of red, purple, green and gold. It's one of those varieties that reminds me gardening isn't always about growing the biggest harvest. Sometimes it's simply about growing something unusual because it caught your eye.

July is less about squeezing more plants into the garden and more about looking after the ones you've already got.

Tomatoes will benefit from a regular feed now, especially once the first fruits begin to develop. Keep tying plants into

their supports as they grow, and if you're growing cordon varieties, pinch out the side shoots to help the plant put its energy into producing fruit.

Don't stop sowing just because the beds are filling up. I always try to keep a little space aside for succession sowing. A short row of salad leaves every couple of weeks is usually enough to keep fresh leaves coming well into late summer instead of ending up with everything ready at the same time.

Watering becomes much more important during warm weather too. It can be tempting to give everything a quick splash every evening, but I've found a proper soak every few days is usually much more beneficial. It encourages roots to grow deeper and helps plants cope better when the next warm spell arrives.

If there's one job I never quite seem to stay ahead of, it's weeding. Every year I tell myself I'll keep on top of it, and every year the weeds remind me they don't take weekends off. I've learned that ten minutes here and there is far easier than leaving everything until it

turns into an afternoon's work. The longer evenings are welcome, but they don't magically create more free time. Little and often still wins every time.

One of the nicest things about July is finally enjoying the garden you've been working towards all year.

The strawberries rarely make it as far as the kitchen, and there's something satisfying about walking through the greenhouse each evening to see how much everything has grown in just a day or two. Even after losing the spinach and broccoli, there's far more to enjoy than there is to worry about.

Before long, August will be here and the garden will move into another phase, with heavier harvests and the first thoughts of what to sow for the months ahead.

For now though, I'm trying to slow down and enjoy this stage of the season. After all the planning and preparation earlier in the year, this is the month when the garden really starts giving something back. n

Enniscorthy Municipal District has just appointed a consultant to carry out a full review of the Enniscorthy Farmers' Market. This review will look at the location, but also the layout, operations, and future development options to ensure the Market continues to thrive and support local growers. The consultant will begin work shortly.

Many have voiced their opinion that the market should be in the town centre, perhaps in the Market Square or the new Murphy Floods car-park.

However, the Farmers’ Market traders themselves favour remaining in their existing Abbey Square location. n

VAT reduction to benefit food and drink businesses Ireland’s VAT rate for the hospitality and food sectors officially dropped from 13.5% to 9% on 1st July 2026.

However, hotel room stays and shortterm accommodation remain at the higher 13.5%. Senator Cathal Byrne believes the reduction for the hospitality and food sectors will protect jobs and help businesses remain competitive, continue to create jobs, and provide quality services in our local communities across Co. Wexford.

Senator Byrne says, “In Fine Gael, we know that running a business isn’t easy and we are committed to working hard to reduce costs for businesses.

“This change will be felt on the ground; by our family-run shops, cafés, and service providers who have worked hard through challenging times. It gives them space to reinvest, innovate, and expand.”

How to keep pets safe in the heat Pet owners can take proactive steps to help pets stay comfortable and safe during warm weather:  Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are lower.  Ensure fresh, cool drinking water is always available.  Provide access to shade and cool resting areas.  Keep pets indoors during the hottest hours where possible.  Use cooling mats, damp towels, or fans to help pets stay comfortable.  Avoid exercise, including excessive running, ball throwing, and play sessions.  Check pavements before walks, as surfaces can become hot enough to burn paws. If the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand for seven seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.  Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.  Take extra care with puppies, senior pets, overweight animals, and brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs.

Know the Signs of Heat Stroke: Pet owners are urged to watch for the signs of heat stroke, including heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy or weakness, difficulty breathing, vomiting or diarrhoea, confusion or disorientation, and collapse.

If heat stroke is suspected, owners should immediately move their pet to a cool, shaded area, offer small amounts of water, apply cool (not ice-cold) water to the body and contact a veterinary practice without delay. Early intervention can significantly improve outcomes. n

The wonderful Tidy Towns volunteers around the county are still finding bagged dog poo discarded in landscaped areas, in planters, left on top of walls, or just dropped on the footpaths.

These groups are exasperated by this ongoing problem, saying, “There’s just no excuse!” because you don’t need to find a dedicated dog-waste bin, bagged dog waste can go in any public litter bin! n

VET DIARY FOR JULY It’s July, summer's here in full swing with temperatures up in the 20’s. Just nicely hot but not unbearable. After six months of rain from the back end of last year and earlier this year, sunshine is a real gift.

Everywhere looks better in the sunshine, the trees, flowers, and the field crops.... Looking at the cattle lying off in the fields content as ye like is one of the simple pleasures of a country vet. Seeing any animal content and happy is the essence of any vet’s job and helping them achieve that. That will come in different guises.

To a young animal it’s giving them the freedom to grow and blossom to their full potential. This will include good nutrition and a nurturing environment that allows them be their best. Kindness and care go a long way on this path and animals, like ourselves, respond to this nurture. We can feed a puppy, a calf, a foal in a dark dreary hovel with no light or ventilation and that animal will grow but will never reach its potential. Creating a place that is bright, airy, warm, and freedom to move, this is what gives them the chance to shine. It's called epigenetics and is scientifically proven that when you don't limit a young animal in feed or space in the early weeks and months, they will perform at a much higher level right throughout their lives.

That kindness and nurturing is paid back ten fold in time.

That contentment to an older animal might look very different. It might be freedom from pain from sore joints, needing to be fed three times a day instead of once a day.

My own dog Mac, whom lots of you have probably met in the clinic, our meet and greet person – he turned 17 last week and is still hanging in there. He sweeps his grub, comes for short walks and sleeps lots. He still wants to come with me when I'm heading on calls and if possible I'll bring the ole boy along. Contentment for him is that he is still included, he still has something of value and that is his companionship and loyalty. He has seen me through thick ‘n’ thin and he's still looking to keep going despite poor mobility and weakness in his back legs. He was diagnosed with spondylosis of the spine a few years back, that's spicules of bone outgrowths from the spine that pinch the nerves and reduce the mobility. A year later he had a stroke that we thought he wouldn't recover from, but acupuncture and good nursing helped him bounce back. Six months ago he got knocked down on a farm and came back from that too! His indomitable will to live and be included is one of the many wonders of Mac. The heat on these old animals is hard on them, so try keeping them out of direct sunlight in an airy place but not in a draught. Dogs, like ourselves, don't need to eat as much in the warm weather, plenty of drinks and light meals. If they're really panting, cool them down with cold water, and if in doubt contact us or your local vet for advice.

PRODIGIOUSLY TALENTED MIA – SETTING THE FOOTBALL WORLD ALIGHT On one incredible weekend in June, 14-year-old Mia Whelan from Enniscorthy played for the Wexford FC U-17 team scoring four goals, and then came on for the second half of Wexford FC's U-23 match and scored a hat-trick. Seven goals in two games! And, unbelievably, she is agequalifed to play for the u-23s for the next 8 years!

But Mia is no stranger to football success. A standout player for Moyne Rangers, she also played for her school Marshalstown, famously winning the FAI Schools Primary 5s Girls 'B' All-Ireland title in 2024 at the Aviva Stadium, and winning the Player of the Tournament award (see photos). Mia recently represented Ireland at U-15 and U-16 levels.

Never one to forget her roots, Mia returned to Marshalstown School last month to present her first Ireland jersey to the school. A delighted colleague on the 2024 school team, Emily Redmond, accepted the jersey on behalf of the school.

Principal Michelle O'Neill spoke enthusiastically about Mia saying that Mia has taken all her success in her stride, never seeking glory for herself. Michelle proudly displayed some framed photos of the famous 2024 success.

The modest and unassuming Mia thanked Principal O'Neill and also Ms Morrissey and Ms Waters, the school's football team trainers, for all their support.

CHARITY FOOTBALL GAME RAISES FUNDS FOR ST VINCENT DE PAUL CIE Promotions n

CIE Promotions brought its football journey in Wexford to a memorable close with its final-ever football event on 6th June 2026, as CIE faced Enniscorthy United B Team in an entertaining and competitive charity match.

The CIE squad included Ireland international and Enniscorthy native Festy Ebosele.

The game produced plenty of excitement, with CIE emerging victorious by 7–5 in a closely contested encounter.

More importantly, the event successfully raised €270 for St. Vincent de Paul, supporting a worthy cause.

Rebellion Weekend in Enniscorthy Words by Maria Nolan

The Longest Day Commemoration provided an opportunity for reflection and remembrance of the events of 1798.

The 21st June is always a very special day in Enniscorthy for it was on that day, the longest day in 1798, fifteen hundred rebels from Enniscorthy and beyond were killed and their bodies left to rot on Vinegar Hill.

This year the anniversary was commemorated with a two-day event, beginning on Saturday with a series of lectures at our state-of-the-art National 1798 Centre, and I was fortunate to attend.

‘The man who sold Ireland’

Words & pics by Maria Nolan ‘The man who sold Ireland’ was the title of a talk recently at Wexford Library by Luke Bradley as part of the Wexford Normandy Cultural Association’s series of lectures in the lead up to the Year of the Normans 2027.

The man who sold Ireland is, of course, our own poor and much maligned Diarmuid McMurrough who is tainted with the monicker ‘traitor’, with eight hundred years of suppression attributed to him for inviting the Normans into Ireland in 1169.

Luke Bradley, despite the title of his talk, gave a very balanced and sympathetic view of the circumstances of the time whereby defeated and deposed Irish Chieftains often sought help whereever they could find it to take back their kingdoms and also made a case against the sometimes very biased keepers of records notably the very anti Irish Gerald of Wales.

So really, less of the name calling, it’s time we in Wexford stood up in defence of Diarmuid McMurrough – he’s had eight hundred years of bad press – time to turn the tide a wee bit and mention that if it hadn’t been for Tiernan O’Ruairc going whinging to Ruairi O’Connor and they combining their forces to oust Diarmuid from the throne of Leinster in the first place then he would never have had the need to go traipsing to France to find King Henry II to seek help from him to regain his throne.

Perhaps, all the eight hundred years of oppression should in fact be attributed to Tiernan Lord of Breffine who sought revenge on Diarmuid for abducting his wife Dervorgilla years earlier and couldn’t let it go, maybe because it was never clear whether she was taken or went willingly.

But perhaps, it is he, the man scorned who forced Diarmuid’s hand, after all what did they expect a full-blooded Wexford man to do, just give in that easily and go away and die in exile.

Norman focus continues The next talk in the Norman series will be held in St. Edan’s Cathedral, Ferns, on Thursday, July 16th, at 7.30pm.

The talk is part of a series of talks to raise awareness of 2027 European Year of the Normans. It will be given by Dr. Patrick Wadden, Assistant Professor in Medieval History at the School of History and Geography, Dublin City University. His research focuses on the history of early medieval Ireland and its neighbours.

Dr Wadden has published several articles and book chapters on Norman activity in Ireland and the Irish Sea region between the tenth and eleventh centuries. His talk on July 16th will examine interactions between the Normans and Ireland between the foundation of Normandy in 911 and the early twelfth century.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

New homes opened in Gorey Then Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Cllr. Joe Sullivan, welcomed Minister James Browne TD to Gorey last month to officially open the new homes at Cúirt Dhiarmaid Uí Shúilleabháin in Creagh.

Cúirt Dhiarmaid Uí Shúilleabháin is a prime example of Wexford County Council’s housing ambition to deliver quality, energy efficient homes for the people of Co. Wexford – building communities, rather than just building houses.

This new housing estate was named in honour of Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin, who was a teacher at St Joseph’s CBS primary school and was a writer of both prose and poetry in the Irish language. The new housing scheme consists of 22 homes with a mixture of houses and apartments ideally located close to all local amenities.

Speaking at the event, Cllr. Joe Sullivan, then Cathaoirleach of Wexford Council, stated, “In naming this estate in honour of Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin his memory will live on in Gorey and North Wexford as a reminder of his commitment to Gorey town in education and literature.”

The event was attended by elected representatives, family members of Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin, new residents, and invited guests, and was delivered with funding secured from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s Social Housing Investment Programme.

Affordable Housing event Strong public interest in an Affordable Housing Scheme, ‘An Lisín Mór’, Coolballow, Wexford, was recorded at an Affordable Housing information event held in Whites Hotel, Wexford, on June 11th, 2026.

This is the sixth scheme to launch in Co. Wexford as demand for affordable home ownership continues to grow, and is the second Affordable Housing project in Wexford town.

‘An Lisín Mór’ is a partnership project between Wexford County Council and Arcona Developments, with 20 new Arated homes for sale.

Attendees at the information event had the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from Wexford County Council’s housing and commercial finance teams, who provided guidance on eligibility requirements, affordability calculations, and the application process.

An Lisín Mór, a new housing development in Coolballow, will deliver a range of high-quality A-rated two-, threeand four-bedroom homes, helping to address growing demand for affordable home ownership in County Wexford.

With the application of government supports and equity contributions, prices for the affordable purchase homes will start from €240,000, with buyers able to get support through the Government’s Help to Buy Scheme.

The application portal for An Lisín Mór opened on 24th June 2026 and Wexford County Council hosted an online information webinar on 18th June providing a detailed overview of the application process and a demonstration of the online application portal.

More water improvements Uisce Éireann is proceeding with works to replace 1.25km of old and damaged water mains in Enniscorthy. From Nunnery Road to Summerhill Road along to Blackstoops, crews will be installing the 1.25km of new, modern pipes to strengthen the local network and reduce disruption to homes and businesses.

The existing pipes were prone to bursts and leaks, leading to supply interruptions and the loss of treated drinking water, a spokesperson said. With more than 65,000km of underground pipes nationally – enough to circle the earth one and a half times – fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but progress is being made. Uisce Éireann says national leakage is now at its lowest level ever, down from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.

Browne TD has welcomed news of the upcoming works. “This is positive news for the people of Enniscorthy who will benefit from a more reliable water supply through these upgrades to the pipe network. A reliable water supply is fundamental to family and community life.”

Works are due to begin around now and will include installing new water service connections from the public water main on the road to customers’ property boundaries and linking them to the customers’ water supply.

The project is being delivered by Shareridge Ltd, on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in the autumn of this year.

Don Somers, overall winner of the Teagasc FBD Environmental Sustainability Award 2025, hosted a special family farm walk, attended by hundreds of people, on his farm in Oylegate, County Wexford, on the 17th of June 2026.

Don farms 183 hectares in partnership with his uncle Jim, producing winter and spring cereals while sharing machinery and labour resources. His farm was recognised nationally for its outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability, innovative farming practices, and dedication to protecting natural resources while producing highquality food.

Don Somers has implemented a range of sustainable farming practices, including precision nutrient management, or-

ganic manure use, cover crops, and advanced technologies such as nitrogen sensors and yield mapping to improve efficiency and soil health. His commitment to environmental protection is further demonstrated through reduced chemical nitrogen use, riparian buffer zones, integrated pest management, and biodiversity-friendly hedgerow management that help safeguard water quality and wildlife habitats.

Speaking from the event, Dr Siobhán Kavanagh, Teagasc Signpost Programme Communications and Engagement Specialist, said: “Since being crowned the overall winner of the Teagasc/FBD Environmental Sustainability Awards last October, Don Somers has been a fantastic ambassador, sharing key messages on his journey to date,

Bug hotels for local primary schools Thanks to Enniscorthy Men's Shed, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns group was recently able to donate three bug hotels to local primary schools.

These structures are being placed by the schools off the ground in shaded, dry, and warm locations.

Habitats for insects, such as these bug hotels, is a recommendation of the Enniscorthy Community Biodiversity Action Plan. n

Blue flag for Duncannon Friday 19th June 2026 marked a proud and historic moment for the community of Duncannon as the Blue Flag was officially raised over Duncannon Beach for the first time in 19 years, signalling the beach’s return to the highest standards of environmental quality, safety, and management.

The Blue Flag, one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels for beaches and marinas, is awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Its return to Duncannon reflects sustained and measurable improvements in water quality, habitat protection, and beach management practices over recent years. n

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns volunteers are doing a lot of work at present on their anti-dog-fouling campaign including the use of stencils and spray paint to spray “Bag It, Bin It” messages on footpaths which are prone to dog fouling. Dog poo contains harmful bacteria, is unsightly, gets on shoes, buggies, wheelchairs etc and, of course, is a big problem for visually impaired people. The Tidy Towns group is pleading with dog owners to practise responsible dog ownership, pick up after your dog and bin that poo. n

Wexford’s biodiversity showcase through art Riverchapel National School and St Aidan’s Primary School, Enniscorthy, were presented with runner-up awards of €250.

Young artists from schools all around County Wexford received their awards for the Wexford County Council Annual Artwork Competition 2026 in the County Hall on Thursday 11th June 2026. The artwork competition is an initiative run by the Environment Section of Wexford County Council in conjunction with Wexford Naturalists’ Field Club.

The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Wexford’s Wetlands’.

Then Cathaoirleach, Cllr Joe Sullivan, presented prizes to 43 schoolchildren representing both primary and secondary schools.

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns were the winners in the Snap Into Action Community Group Competition and received a prize of €500. Tomhaggard Clean Coasts Group and South East Region CGI Girl Guides were presented with runner-up awards of €250.

Councillor Joe Sullivan congratulated all involved and praised the groups for all their voluntary work in Keeping Wexford Beautiful. n

Cllr Sullivan stated that ‘the aim of the competition is to raise awareness of the importance of Wexford’s environment and to encourage all to explore its uniqueness as something to be valued and cherished.’

He stated that ‘Wexford’s Wetlands are a unique asset deserving of the utmost protection and care. That is why raising awareness – especially through creativity and art – is so essential... We all have a role to play in learning more about biodiversity and protecting the natural heritage of Wexford. The artwork displayed here today reminds us all to look after our environment, a precious legacy for generations to come.’

Cllr Sullivan thanked Don Conroy for providing the colouring sheet and judging the artwork competition. He also thanked Wexford Naturalists’ Field Club for supporting the competition and sponsoring birdboxes. He also praised the young artists present and thanked the parents and teachers who have encouraged, nurtured, and inspired these great artists.

The overall winner for Primary Schools was Rocco Doyle, Glynn National School, and the overall winner for Secondary Schools was Tommy O’Leary, St Peter’s College, Wexford. The winning artwork was displayed in County Hall.

Prizes were also presented for the Snap into Action Competition, which is open to both schools and community groups.

This competition encourages people from all walks of life to take action against litter.

Kilmyshall National School received first prize in the Snap Into Action School Competition and received a prize for €500.

Swift work by Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Another good day for the Swifts of Enniscorthy! Thanks to Enniscorthy Municipal District and The Presentation Arts Centre Enniscorthy, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns has been able to erect six swift nests on the historic arts building.

Swifts numbers continue to decline in St Senan’s Primary School caretaker Pudgy Hyland underneath the swift nests installed there.

Presentation Centre under the watchful eye of Billy. We would also like to thank Larry in the Centre and Enniscorthy Municipal District for allowing us permission, and Power Plant Hire for the cherry picker which allowed safe installation.’ n

Enniscorthy’s Common Swift Survey The Common Swift (Apus apus) is a summer migrant breeding throughout Europe, north Africa and central Asia, wintering in sub-Saharan Africa. In recent decades, Swift numbers have been in decline across much of its range.

In Ireland, data from the Countryside Bird Survey (CBS) shows a 69% decline in Swifts between 1998-2023 (BWI, unpublished data). As a result, Swifts are now red listed as a species of conservation concern in Ireland. This decline is likely driven by several factors including a loss of nesting habitat, insect declines, and factors associated with climate change.

An urban species, Swifts typically nest in small cavities in buildings and have been proven to nest in artificial nest boxes and bricks. Accurately assessing numbers and locations of nesting Swifts is key to protecting existing nest sites, determining the number of nest boxes and bricks required to bolster the population, and where best to locate them. As such, the objective of the Swift survey is to gather robust data on the number and location of Swift nest sites in Enniscorthy and New Ross to underpin conservation measures taken for this species. The survey is being undertaken by Tara Adock and Jonathan Stanley of Birdwatch Ireland, funded jointly by the National Parks

and Wildlife Service through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund with match funding provided by Wexford County Council.

Community groups such as Enniscorthy Tidy Towns have a proven track record in protecting existing nest sites, in advocating for compensation following loss of nest sites, and in undertaking Swift nest box projects. As such, community and public engagement is a key element of this survey work, with potential benefits for this species in the years following the survey.

A talk on the outcome of the survey will take place later this summer with Birdwatch Ireland and Wexford Co. Council. n

Éanna enthralls on biodiversity walk The wonderful Éanna Ní Lamhna, one of Ireland’s best known environmentalists, hosted two events as part of the recent Enniscorthy Street Rhythms festival.

The first event was a family-friendly biodiversity walk at the Orchard Peace Park in Enniscorthy.

This free event drew a large crowd to the beautiful park and all were enthralled by Eanna’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and her captivating delivery.

Later in the day Eanna spoke about local wildlife and biodiversity at an event in Enniscorthy’s Church Institute. n

St Senan’s School, Enniscort

The Green-Schools Committee in St Senan’s Primary School, Enniscorthy, who recently were awarded their 10th Green Flag for Global Citizenship – Food and Biodiversity. Pupils in the school continue to help reduce waste by recycling, saving energy by turning off the lights and devices when not in use, and looking after the school grounds including the ‘No Mow’ areas to promote biodiversity.

Very few schools in Ireland have achieved ‘10 Green Flags’ – all ten prestigious thematic awards in the An Taisce Green-Schools Programme. And St Senan’s Primary School in Enniscorthy is now one of the select few.

These schools have committed to various environmental projects, focusing on themes like Litter & Waste, Travel, Biodiversity, and Global Citizenship.

The programme in the school is guided

by three teachers: Ailbhe Murphy, Sinead Parle, and Michaela McEvoy.

While hundreds of schools receive Green Flag awards annually, achieving all ten is a very special milestone.

Bringing derelict homes to life Wexford Co. Council in conjunction with South East Radio has produced a six-part podcast mini-series around stories of derelict properties being brought back to life with support, grants, and advice.

Each episode focuses on a story of a derelict property in Co. Wexford brought back to life by its owners with support and help from the vacant property refurbishment grant and through support from Wexford Co. Council Regeneration Unit, Planning Department, and Property Unit.

This series is an opportunity to hear real stories of people who have taken on the

challenge of restoring a property and the difference it has made to their lives and their communities. By combining those personal journeys with expert insight from Wexford Co. Council speakers, the podcast helps demystify the process and encourages others to explore the opportunities that exist.

Each episode follows the journey of a property owner who has transformed a vacant or derelict building into a home or business. Their experience – the challenges, the decisions, the moments of doubt, and the eventual success – form the heart of the story.

Alongside these personal accounts, contributors from Wexford Co. Council provide practical insight into the supports available, the steps involved in restoring a property and the wider benefits for towns and communities.
