All roads lead to Enniscorthy this month as the town hosts its annual Street Rhythms Festival on 13th and 14th June. We carry extensive information about this colourful festival in this issue, mainly on pages 46-48, including the full programme of events. In recent years this wonderful Festival has added a welcome health/sustainability/environment element to its extensive programme of dance, rhythm, and street performance events. So there’s something for all the family, and all ages, to enjoy.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– A number of positive developments on the Eastside of Enniscorthy are dotted throughout this issue including a look at some derelict buildings which have just been sold or are ‘sale agreed’ including the old Slaney Plaza cinema. Hopefully new owners will bring them back into productive and attractive use soon. Today, 5th June, we’ll be in Templeshannon Community & Childcare Centre helping the team there celebrate the centre’s 50th birthday. And later this month we expect to be attending the reopening for community use of the Captain Wafer Hall. We’ll carry reports and photos in next month’s issue and, of course, on our popular Facebook page also.

Adam arrives home following kidnapping Adam Fitzhenry from Bree arrived home in Ireland last month following his illegal kidnapping in international waters, and incarceration by the Israeli regime, having been part of a flotilla attempting to bring food, medicine, etc to the suffering people of Gaza.

Israel has now been added to a UN blacklist of countries that commit sexual violence in warzones. A report by the office of Secretary General António Guterres said the UN had last year verified 31 cases of sexual violence perpetrated by Israeli forces against Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank.

The report said the violations included rape, gang rape, forced nudity, and violence to genitals committed by officers from the Israeli military, police and prison service.

Over 9,000 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli custody. n

Amnesty International Wexford Group continues its monthly protest on the first Thursday of every month at 6.30pm in Redmond Square, Wexford, against the ongoing Israeli-perpetrated genocide and mass starvation in Gaza. The group is urging the people of Wexford to join them, to show support for the Palestinian people, and among other measures to insist the Irish government fulfil their commitment to enact the Occupied Territories Bill to include both goods AND services.

Founded in the 1990s, Amnesty International Wexford Group is one of eight Amnesty groups around Ireland contributing to that organisation’s tireless work in defending human rights all over the world.

This friendly and energetic group of local people holds monthly meetings at 6.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month in the lobby/coffee dock in Whites of Wexford hotel. They raise local awareness about human rights, organise events and stalls and film nights, fundraise, and campaign by letter-writing and lobbying.

For the first time ever, Rhythm Rebels Dance Battle will take place on Sunday, 14th June, at The Athenaeum, Enniscorthy, bringing together dancers, dance schools, and hip-hop culture enthusiasts for an actionpacked day of competition, creativity, and community.

This brand-new event will showcase the very best in hip-hop and breakdancing, with dancers of all ages and abilities invited to take part in a series of showcases, cyphers, and 1v1 battles.

The aim is to encourage local dancers and dance schools to come together, celebrate their talents, and enjoy an unforgettable experience.

BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS The Bicentennial Celebrations of the Presentation Sisters’ arrival in Enniscorthy in 1826 will take place on June 19th, 2026.

Retired Presentation Sisters who worked and lived in the convent and school at its closure in July 2001 have been invited to share in the celebrations on that day.

2026 is also the 250th anniversary of the foundation of the Presentation Order.

St. Aidan’s Parish and the people of Enniscorthy are delighted to mark the occasion in gratitude to the Order for their contribution to the people of Enniscorthy.

It will be a wonderful opportunity for past pupils, staff, and families to catch up and reminisce on past schooldays, and also to trace the development of St. Aidan’s School since 2001.

The celebrations will include: 3.30pm Refreshments in the Presentation Centre.

5pm Blessing of deceased nuns’ graves in the Orchard Peace Park.

5.30pm Tree planting in the Cathedral grounds.

Events will culminate with 6pm Mass in St. Aidan’s Cathedral, Enniscorthy.

Why can’t we have a choir like the Hawkstone Farmers?

The Hawkstone Farmers Choir in the UK, made up of 34 farmers (10 of whom are our neighbours from across the sea in Wales), has won Britain's Got Talent 2026 on ITV and Virgin Media.

Complimenting them, one of the Britain's Got Talent judges, Amanda Holden, said it so well: “Farming touches every single person in this country. Everything that you do, mostly on your own, in tractors, ploughing fields, you’re up early, you barely have people to talk to, and this choir I know has given you solace and joy and comfort and friendship and all of that has created the most amazing music, so well done.”

Even Simon Cowell praised them prior to the final: “You are one of the favourites to win.” He praised their wish to raise awareness and funds for Mental Health.

So why can’t we have a Wexford Farmers’ Choir performing in the National Concert Hall, the National Opera House, the 3 Arena, the Aviva, Croke Park, and Wexford Park?

They have it in Whites and in the Wildflower Café Years ago, the young men of Wexford turned their heads for Sally O’Brien and “the way she might look at you”. Sally had that smile in the TV ad that lured you to have a beer. Not everyone has it.

It’s either in you or it’s not. It’s that ready smile and that special interest in the customer and care for his or her welfare, happiness, and experience.

They have it in most, but not all, hotels and restaurants and cafes all over County Wexford.

A famished Atticus selected a ‘Wow sandwich’ from the menu in Whites and Rachel Long with a smile asked him if he’d like a basket of chips to go with it.

That’s the difference. Sophie Caulfield checked back quietly and discreetly to see if everything was to his satisfaction.

Nadia and Katie in The Wildflower Café were super customer carers likewise.

When Att received one of those scrumptiously delightful bowls of soup for which sane people would die, Nadia and Katie in their distinctive uniforms asked if he would like some lovely brown bread and butter too. Of course, said Atticus. Of course. (By the way, the soup is made from a recipe that only the owner William knows).

Meanwhile, the ever-gracious Sheila and her associate Stephanie managed the never-ending queue of customers who filed into the Wildflower. This is the Wexford equivalent of the old Bewleys café of Dublin where you would linger long all day if guilt let you and where most of the crockery is fine china.

If Sheila could not give you a table immediately, she gave you a bleeper that would alert you to food readiness in ten minutes or so while you pottered, helped by Andrew Rothwell and his horticulture expert Suzanne in the vast array of plants and flowers and garden things.

Ah yes Atticus and friends will be back to Whites Hotel and to Beechdale Garden Centre and the Wildflower Café.

broadcasts on South East Radio with Cecil Riddell, and before that Mater Hospital Radio, has celebrated his 90th birthday with colleagues and friends in Brabazon, Dublin.

for the 1916 commemorations in Enniscorthy town. The colours are said to represent Catholics (green) and Protestants (orange) with the White for peace joining them.

He and his late wife Annette lived in Oylegate for many years.

Kent Stainless designed and built the pole or obelisk on which the flag is hanging. In a dark night of high drama during which Gardaí and local authority blocked the streets, J and P Murphy of Barmoney delivered the pole and, using a huge crane, moved it into position in Abbey Square.

Ted’s many friends include Very Revd.

Leslie Forrest, retired Dean of Ferns, fellow broadcaster Maria Colfer, producer/presenter of the Simply Divine programme on South East Radio, and Bairbre Comerford.

His son Scott has been a major sponsor of the Wexford Festival Opera for many years. His sister-in-law Chlora and her husband Frank live in Blackwater. He is a cousin of Brian Hayes, former MEP and Government Minister, later ceo of the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland. And cousin of the late RTÉ broadcasting legend, Arthur Murphy.

The flag, then and now, hangs limply on the pole and, except occasionally, refuses to flap or flutter suggesting a metaphor for how the town sometimes feels about itself.

Ted came to national attention from an interview by Liam Collins of the Sunday Independent about his life and times as a sailor and later as an officer of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Cold War in Germany and Poland. His memoir Sailor, Airman, Spy which gives an account for that period of his life has sold out.

Unveiled in April 2016 for the 1916 centenary commemorations, it has hung ‘like a wet hanky on a clothes line’, while neighbouring flags fly proudly in a Wexford breeze.

Ten Years On: The Flag that does not Flap Ten years have passed since Mark Tighe, now of the Irish Times, published the story in the Sunday Times about the “Flagging tricolour that has town in a flap”.

His report referred to Ireland’s national flag of green, white, and orange raised on the beautiful sixteen metre high, €50,000 flagpole, known widely as ‘the Patriots’ Pole’ specially commissioned

Locals noted that the flag sometimes lifts a little when Liam Spratt, sports broadcaster on South East Radio, announces a goal.

Experts blame a lack of wind in Abbey Square and the flag being too heavy or too large (the largest in Ireland!) at six metres by three. Others say that leaving the flag to fate is disrespectful and breaking the law, although it seems there’s nothing in the protocol that legislates for a flag that refuses to flap or flutter.

And others say that the timed automatic lighting at the pole, provided by Wexford County Council, satisfies the raising of the flag at sunrise and lowering it at sunset in each season of the year.

County Wexford. Thomas Meagher, an Irish American from The Mall, Waterford, a member of the Young Ireland Movement in the Famine year of 1848, received it from a group of French women who wove the original from silk. They were inspired by Ireland’s struggles for peace.

Enniscorthy volunteers are said to have brought the flag to the town, intending it to be flown on Vinegar Hill, linking the Young Ireland movement of 1848 to the 1798 Rebellion.

Teacher Aidan Joins the Class of 68 They were once his pupils. Now Aidan Ryan, their much loved, popular primary teacher of the 1960s has joined the Class of ’68.

Members of the class, graduates of CBS Enniscorthy Secondary School in 1968, gather informally at the Riverside Park Hotel where they discuss global matters, local matters, life matters, and teachers and classmates absent or gone but not forgotten. Aidan’s vast knowledge adds to theirs.

Together, they possess several lifetimes of wisdom which they share on issues including education, property, investment, health, politics, and financial conundrums. They have lived before free education, television, the EEC, social media, and they have lived through massive change.

Their convenor is Oliver Kehoe, a retired regional bank manager in the UK, who visits Wexford every month or so.

Money is not everything they say, health is everything even if you have nothing and life and success (whatever you conceive that to be) are often a matter of luck.

If only the young would listen.

Old Atticus witnessed Colm Neville, owner, and Michael Halpin, general manager, of the Newtown Park Hotel admiring their three new flags flying proudly side by side at the approach to their hotel beside the roundabout at Wexford town.

He noted the national flag rightly placed in the centre of the three, the Wexford flag of purple and gold on the left and the Newtown Park flag on the right. No flag should be higher than the national flag.

An innocent Atticus asked the hotel receptionist what each flag represents.

She quickly and pleasantly stepped out from her desk and enthusiastically and knowledgeably pointed to each flag, giving an informed account of its background.

We need more like that receptionist.

slaney news Saunderscourt Gate Lodges get €90,000 from Structures Fund The Saunderscourt Gate Lodges at Crossabeg, championed by the late Mairéad Furlong and the Irish Landmark Trust, have been awarded €90,000 from the Historic Structures Fund.

“Mairéad would be thrilled,” said her niece, Martina Kealy.

This funding will enable it to be brought back and developed to meaningful use.

Saunderscourt, one of Ireland’s distinctive surviving Palladian structures, was featured in Slaney News earlier this year.

Kevin Blackwood, the award-winning conservation architect, will give a talk about Saunderscourt to the Wexford Historical Society at the Oscar Wilde Suite in Whites Hotel on Thursday 9th July at 7.00pm.

The Messages are in the Signs Old Atticus reads the signs. Signs tell a lot about you and your place. Want to keep up appearances, promote yourself, your business or your place, clean your signs. Gleamingly clean signs cheer Att up and puff up his pride in himself and in his place. Everything counts and perception is reality.

The signs tell him that the people nearby care about themselves and their place.

Battered, broken, scratched, muck-

covered road signs send not-so-good messages to tourists, to natives, and to customers. Tidy Towns judges watch out for signs that could decide winners.

Att studies road signs and direction signs and motorway signs and tourist and heritage signs. Bad signs cause road accidents.

In the Wexford, Enniscorthy, and Rosslare area, he has found numerous good signs, but he has found numerous dull signs, dim signs, dirty signs, away signs, awful signs, vague signs and ‘Was that a sign’ signs. They undermine the good signs.

On the edge of Wexford town, where thousands of people work and visitors come from Ireland and abroad, is a battered and scratched direction sign that gives an impression of indifference. It’s been there for a long time. It should be replaced.

On the approach road to Rosslare Strand, is a huge tourism sign that once cheered up visitors. Time has made a once beautiful sign dull and dirty. It belies the vibrant, caring, hardworking local people of the Tidy Towns, and instead gives an impression of decadence.

It’s time for a new one.

On the R730 between Ballymackessy, Clonroche, and Ballybrennan, there are many signs covered in green and therefore indecipherable.

At the old bridge in Enniscorthy town, is a very dirty sign. It’s an important sign.

All it would take is a ladder, a bucket of water, a cloth, some Fairy liquid, and elbow grease for about 15 minutes to make it visible again.

The signs to Vinegar Hill are good but visitors approaching the site of the 1798 Rebellion could end up in Curracloe or at Wheelock’s. Perhaps that’s the plan – to get visitors to go there, buy strawberries, or see the landscape. However, unless your eyesight is as a good as a Bree hawk and you are slowed down to about 10 kph, you will pass by the sign to where the world-famous battle between the English Crown forces and the natives of Wexford took place.

On the approach to the Duncannon roundabout near the Whitford Hotel is a huge promotional sign telling the thousands of visitors from all over Europe, just off the ships, to turn ‘next left’ for the Hook. Now, why is there no promotional sign telling visitors to ‘next right’ into the feature-rich Wexford town, or to the National Heritage Park or Ferrycarrig Norman village or to head on to the steeped-in-history and heritage town of Enniscorthy?

The best of all the signs is a simple sign that shows a big strawberry and message that says 1 km. It says everything and it’s highly visible and clean.

The Commodore John Barry statue, Wexford Back in the 1930s a religious brother from Taghmon in Co. Wexford, Brother Aidan Whelan, who was based in New York, came to the conclusion that Commodore John Barry should be honoured by the erection of a statue in Ireland. He began a campaign with Congress and succeeded in getting agreement in principle that this would be done. Unfortunately, the war intervened which put a hold on Congress allocating any funds for such a purpose.

Ireland’s neutrality during the war soured many Americans and particularly David Gray who was the US Ambassador to Ireland. The project was put on hold.

However, after the war ended and some of the Congressional hostility towards Ireland abated, Brother Whelan again brought his proposal forward. In early 1948 President Harry Truman signed a bill authorising the expenditure of $30,000 for the development of the statue. Considering that a few short years earlier Ireland’s name was virtually unmentionable because of deep resentment over our non-involvement in the war, this was a major achievement. Br. Whelan was presented with the pen that the President used to sign the Bill.

On the 21st of June 1948 Wexford Corporation discussed the matter and put in a claim for the statue to be sited in Wexford as the original offer from the US government to the Irish government had not named a location. The Department of Foreign Affairs was sympathetic to this after intervention from Brendan Corish TD, Jim Ryan TD, Denny Allen TD, and Sir Anthony Esmonde TD. In August 1948 Wexford was confirmed as the location for the development. It was June 1950 before the matter arose again basically with a report to update the Corporation on progress regarding the design etc.

In February 1952 the Department of External Affairs confirmed that all was in order for Wexford and in May 1952, on the proposal of Dr George Hadden at a meeting of the Corporation, the Crescent was provisionally chosen as the site.

In October 1952 the Corporation requested the Department of Posts and Telegraphs to honour John Barry with a stamp. This was done in 1956 and again in 2003 making him one of the few people to be honoured in such a way on more than one occasion.

In 1953 Brother Whelan sent a very cross letter to the Corporation complaining about the delays in communications from that body regarding progress. The Corporation decided that in future to use airmail when contacting him to keep him up to date.

In late 1953 General North visited Wexford and was hugely impressed by the Crescent Quay site. He also visited the Harbour Board Offices and suggested that the large front room on the first floor should be used as a small museum dedicated to Barry.

In March 1954 a Commodore Barry Committee made up of 23 people was formed. This included the Corporation members as the original voluntary committee had not really worked.

In January 1956 Cllr. John O’Flaherty raised the matter at Corporation level and was told that the Statue wasn’t expected until 1957 at the earliest. In March 1956 the Office of Public Works got involved in the site works which speeded up the process.

As work began on the site the usual rows broke out. A cement mixer was required and the only one available was being used on the housebuilding programme and was owned by a local contractor. He made it available but insisted that his own man would operate it as it might be wrecked. This caused a row with the Corporation and the local unions but the work went ahead.

On September 8th 1956 the statue arrived at Rosslare Harbour on board the USS Charles S. Sperry and was welcomed by the Mayor, Cllr. Eddie Hall, and the Town Clerk John Byrne. A problem had arisen for the Corporation in relation to the date because they had been seeking a meeting with the Minister for Local Government Pa O’Donnell on important

housing matters for more than a year and that was the date given for that meeting also. However, it was agreed that the Minister would have to wait and that John Barry would be received.

In the meantime, work was continuing on the site amidst more controversy. The contractor who had erected the statue had left two watchmen to guard the site until the official unveiling of the statue but on the 11th of September the Borough Engineer McNally arrived, ordered them off the site, and replaced them with one Corporation worker. The Corporation members were not impressed as the cost up to then had been borne by the contractor and not the local authority.

As part of the work on the site the Corporation had to get a grant of £878 from the Department of Local Government to complete the paving of the area. However when they received their 1957 roads allocation later that year the £878 was deducted from the total of £2,400 which was a huge percentage.

The statue was finally unveiled by President Sean T O’Ceallaigh on Sunday, September 16th, 1956. The project had taken from the late 1930s but finally was completed. Sadly Brother Aidan who was the inspiration for this fantastic memorial never saw it as he died on November 4th, 1954.

It probably is time now on the 70th anniversary of the unveiling of the statue to place a small commemorative plaque on the base of the statue recognising his initiating role in this important piece of Wexford history.

Improvements on Esmonde Road

The wretched state of the road surface on the Esmonde Road in Enniscorthy was brought up at recent meetings of Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) with Cllr Jackser Owens saying that one pothole in particular was at least a metre wide.

Agreeing with Cllr Owens, the EMD Roads Engineer stated that ‘it’s not fair’ what residents have to put up with. He said that he had tried to have repair work done there but the crews were intimidated by one or more individuals and didn’t feel

safe. He said also that cones and other items had gone ‘missing’ there.

The engineer reassured those meetings that he was working in the background to try to ensure the repair work could be done in safety.

The good news is that work has now been done on the road and our photos above show ‘before’ and ‘after’ images with Cllr Owens inspecting same. n

County prospers, towns decay The sixty or so people in the glittering ballroom of the beautiful Newbay House, part of the Talbot group, on the Clonard edge of Wexford town, comprised a veritable “Who’s Who” of Co. Wexford’s movers and shakers.

They were there for the launch of the county’s Chamber of Commerce business promotion campaign “Look to Wexford”.

Glossy ‘flying ambassador’ should impress investors:

A look across the faces of those present told you that here were very serious people, who were, to quote the late poet laureate Anthony Cronin of Enniscorthy, ‘roused and fearsome’. They were fired up by their Chamber of Commerce president Ed Murphy, and now had grim intent to grow, expand, and promote Wexford business opportunities here and abroad.

The brochure, which has the iconic image of the Hook Lighthouse looking out beyond our shores to presumably mainland Europe, Canada, the UK, the USA, the Middle East and Asia, has the headline “A Brighter Outlook – Look to Wexford”. It tells us that 10% of Ireland’s total food output is produced in County Wexford, 250k tonnes of freight moves through Rosslare Europort every year, and County Wexford has employment of 74.3 per cent of the county’s population of 163,919.

Gordon D’Arcy, Colin Blake of Zurich, Suzanne Nance of the National Opera House, and Ed Murphy, president of the Chamber of Commerce, urged them to get doing.

Most of those present were owners, entrepreneurs, and executives of the county’s significant major corporates, SMEs, and small owner-manager businesses. They employ most of the county’s workforce, with 22 of them being huge multi-million international businesses doing business across the world.

Others among them such as David Dempsey and Eamonn Sinnott have had experience of whole country and whole world management. There too was Colm Neville, owner of the Neville Park Hotel Group that employs 380 people across Wexford hospitality and welcomes up to 70,000 guests annually.

With them was Jimmy Gahan, former editor of the Echo Newspapers, later entrepreneur, and former secretary of Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce. He and Ed Murphy were catalysts six years ago for reform that created the new all-encompassing Chamber headed by their new ‘get up and go’ CEO Paula Roche.

The Chamber’s appropriately glossy brochure with excellent photography and design is a great flying ambassador for the county and should impress investors here and abroad and potential employees alike.

It is a good statement.

Located here are BD, Coca Cola, Danone, DFDS, Equifax, Integer, Irish Country Meats, Johnsons Celtic Linen, Kersia, Kent, Killowen Farm, Nolan Transport, Perennial Freight, PWC, Reynaers Aluminum Ireland, Scurri, Sulzer, Waters, and Zurich.

Wexford is English speaking, educated, skilled, close to Europe, an hour from Dublin. Online retail accounts for 15-20 per cent of total retail sales.

Wexford is the heart of the south east where there are 85 FDI companies employing 16,395 people with a payroll of more than a billion.

“New businesses don’t just start here, they soar,” exclaims the brochure. “Our location is the key that unlocks Europe,” says one of its headlines. “Business can scale here,” says another. “Open your eyes to what Wexford has to offer,” says Paula Roche.

Ed Murphy, Chamber president, a serial entrepreneur at national level, and founder of GreenTechHQ, the non-profit in Enniscorthy, said, “Our focus is on creating

meaningful, sustainable jobs – so young people can build their careers here, rather than feeling they have to leave.”

Tom Bermingham – ‘Horrified at decay and vacant buildings’: While most parts of the county are thriving, powering ahead, and embracing opportunity, other parts are losing.

Tom Bermingham, the rural development specialist with Wexford Local Development (WLD), told the audience that he wasn’t being negative but that like many others, he had to say it for the good.

Interviewed by broadcaster Mary O’Neill, compere at the Chamber launch at Newbay House, he said that “our town centres are losing their vibrancy”. He told how he took a walk down Wexford town and was “horrified at the state of decay and the number of vacant buildings”.

He said: “I was frightened at the number. I counted them but I’m not going into details.

People should look for themselves. I don’t want to be negative, but I do think it could actually be out of hand in the town. We have to make Wexford a good place to work, live and do business. I think there’s a lot of work to be done to make that happen.”

Offering some hope, he announced that there’s in excess of a million euro in LEADER funding for new enterprises. The focus of that funding is tourism, food, bio/circular economy businesses.

He invited people who would be interested, or know of people who might be interested in that opportunity, to let him know and he’d be delighted to talk with them.

Enniscorthy Credit Union

Fundraiser for South East Palliative Care The success of a local staff-led walking challenge held earlier this year at Enniscorthy Credit Union was officially marked with the presentation of a €1,500 cheque to South East Palliative Care.

Enniscorthy Credit Union staff took part in a “2k-a-day” challenge, committing to walk two kilometres every day to raise funds in support of local palliative and hospice homecare services across Co. Wexford.

Staff gathered in the banking hall on 14th March wearing their pink challenge t-shirts to mark the occasion and celebrate the collective effort behind the

fundraiser that was held throughout the month of January. Local nurse Carmel Smyth accepted the donation on behalf of South East Palliative Care.

Speaking at the cheque presentation, Marketing Officer Joleen Murphy said the initiative was about coming together to support an essential local service.

“There was a great sense of positivity around the challenge from the very beginning. It gave staff an opportunity to focus on wellbeing together, dusting off the cobwebs in January while also working together to help raise money for a service that means so much to families across County Wexford. We all know someone who has received this dedi-

cated vital care from the team.

"A special thank you to all our members who donated in our offices and to those who wished us well throughout. We are honoured to be able to present this donation and to meet with Carmel. She is one of the wonderful nurses working around the county and we hope this donation can help in some way towards the tremendous work they do."

Carmel Smyth thanked those involved on behalf of the South East Palliative Care group and acknowledged the importance of community support in helping palliative care services continue their work throughout the county. n

VINEGAR HILL New pathways and seating have been provided over recent months, along with new panels detailing the experience of the battle of Vinegar Hill in 1798 in both Irish and English. Parking and access improvements to Vinegar Hill are being investigated by Wexford Co. Council (WCC). The Enniscorthy East Community Development Association believes it has identified a site that could be used to allow access to the Hill for buses etc, and could potentially house a new welcome centre/ coffee shop/toilets, etc and have contacted EMD officials about it.

ST JOHN’S COMMUNITY WELLBEING & ACTIVITY GARDEN This new green space, including an amphitheatre, is a vibrant community hub that is safe, accessible and welcoming to all. Some months ago, a new walking route around St. John’s Community Hospital campus was officially opened.

ENNISCORTHY TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION PROJECTS

planning approval for Phase 1 is to be submitted in Q3 2026. Refinement of the design of the proposed pedestrian bridge is being carried out to enhance the structure visually. Traffic modelling is being carried for the revised road layouts and traffic management following the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge and the provision of the new Road Bridge.

Phase 2 – Flood Relief Works. This phase of the scheme will include the construction of the remaining flood relief measures for the town. The next steps are: Assess alternative design options in detail and shortlist these for consultation. Identify the preferred scheme to be brought forward for planning. Decide the appropriate planning route. Prepare planning documents and submit for planning approval. Ecology surveys are being kept up to date, such as wintering bird surveys. The application to MARA for the pre-submission meeting was submitted on the 8/05/2026.

The Scheme has a total approved budget of €51m approx. On completion, it is expected to protect 326 properties – 159 homes and 167 businesses.

Market Square Project: The Part 8 process for the Market Square project was concluded on 9th Sept. 2024, with the Council approving the scheme with amendments to address matters raised during the public consultation process.

Everything is in order for upcoming grant funding call.

BUNCLODY PARK

Castle Quarter Project: A ‘Part 8’ planning process for the Castle Quarter project was launched on 11th February 2026. An application for Ministerial Consents for the project, given its proximity to a National Monument, has been successfully obtained. The Castle nightclub has been acquired and discussions are ongoing with other landowners to acquire further lands required for the project. Consultants for detailed design, procurement and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Templeshannon scheme.

PAIRC NA GABHAR BUNCLODY

Templeshannon Regeneration Project: ODKM Architects have been appointed to undertake concept masterplanning design services for the Templeshannon Regeneration Project. Consultants for preliminary design, planning, detailed design, procurement and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Market Square scheme.

The three projects above will be put forward for grant funding under the current Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund Round 1 call.

ENNISCORTHY CCTV A total of 22 CCTV cameras have been installed at different locations within Enniscorthy Town. The system is expected to go live later this month.

Bunclody CCTV Project: The system is expected to go live later this month.

ENNISCORTHY SPORTS HUB A contractor, Kevin Thorpe Ltd, is now working on the second phase (sports equipment storage area, open space area, changing rooms, toilets, showers, and a small office) of the Sports Hub. The project should be complete by this coming September. The second phase has been made possible through investment of €450,000 by The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Wexford Co. Council providing funding of €150,000.

A Bord Pleanála application was approved with conditions at the end of February. WCC Property Section has signed contracts with the landowner to acquire lands for this project.

Part 8 Planning Permission was granted on 13th April 2026. The project will progress when funding is sourced.

RAFTER STREET PEDESTRIANISATION EMD is now strictly enforcing the pedestrianisation. New signage has been erected stating current byelaw times – between 10.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. The possibility of extending the pedestrianisation hours to cover Saturdays and Sundays will be looked at.

LIBRARIES Under WCC’s three-year capital programme (2026-2028), €4.5m will go towards a new library in Enniscorthy, and €3.1m for Bunclody Library.

ALL-WEATHER ASTRO PITCH, ROSS ROAD A Part 8 pre-planning application for changing rooms for the Astro Pitch has been submitted to Planning. Full resurfacing of the entrance lane to Ringwood has been completed.

Some works have been carried out in recent years on the Enniscorthy North Business District where over 2,000 people currently work. Further funding is required for the active travel elements of the masterplan for the area.

This newly opened carpark adds 37 carparking spaces for the town. The site is valued at €280,000. Wexford Co. Council is committed to the long-term development of the site on a commercial basis; and so it will be placed on the open market at some stage in the future.

€200,000 has been secured for pedestrian crossings and traffic calming outside the Enniscorthy Community College on the Milehouse Road. This also includes funding for traffic calming from Forgelands into Bellefield Road past Lidl and Aldi.

TURRET ROCKS A Part 8 Planning Application is being prepared for the overall plan. The Playground project is at design stage and will be funded by Wexford Co. Council itself. Design and costings have been received for the Skatepark for which an application is being prepared for a Sports Capital grant this year.

ENNISCORTHY FLOOD RELIEF SCHEME The Scheme is now proceeding on a phased basis.

Phase 1 – Bridgeworks. This phase of the project will include the construction of the new River Slaney Bridge, the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge, and the construction of a new pedestrian bridge in the town centre. Public consultation on the preferred option for Phase 1 took place late last year. An application for

BLACKSTAIRS Wexford Co. Council has been awarded almost €50,000 to fund a feasibility study for a walking and cycling trail connecting Bunclody, Kiltealy, Killanne, Templeduigan and Ballywilliam.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK PHASE 2 Tobin Consulting Engineers were appointed to provide technical consultancy services for this project to service upper sites at ETP. Site investigations are complete, and design work is near completion. The works tender has been advertised.

The long neglected East side of Enniscorthy is certainly making up for lost time thanks to local people organising themselves and advocating for improved public realm and services, and with support from Enniscorthy Community Alliance, Enniscorthy East Community Development, Templeshannon Community Centre, GreenTechHQ, Enniscorthy Municipal District, and Wexford Co. Council.

The Eastside has seen increased levels of cleaning & painting, planting, murals, new archways, window boxes, wall panels, laneway cleanups, removal of rubbish from black spots in the area, etc. Captain Wafer Hall will be back in community use later this month. Wexford Co. Council is advancing plans for Templeshannon regeneration and a huge new development at Turret Rocks. A new Community Centre is being planned.

Design work on a new playground is underway. On the cultural side, Wexford Local Development is involved in a number of projects, as is well known folklorist Michael Fortune. And two new choirs have sprung up in the area!

Vinegar Hill has seen a number of improvements including impressive new information panels, and new pathways have been provided over recent weeks (see photo opposite) with new directional signage to follow.

Last month Coláiste Bríde students did their bit for The Shannon Way Project at Barley Field, Coláiste Bríde students hard planting climbers on the at work at Barley Field. boundary wall between Barley Field and Coláiste Bríde Secondary School. This was facilitated by Mr. White, their Civil, Social and Political Education (CSPE) teacher. This lane will be signposted as a walking route to Vinegar Hill and will meet up with the pathways around the Hill.

Slow the Flow: Nature-Based Flood Prevention in Irish Towns Flooding is becoming an increasing concern for many towns and communities across Ireland. Periods of heavy rainfall are placing greater pressure on rivers, drainage systems, and local infrastructure, particularly in towns built near waterways such as Enniscorthy.

While flooding has always been part of Ireland’s natural landscape, experts believe changing weather patterns are contributing to more frequent intense rainfall events. According to Met Éireann, Ireland has become warmer and wetter in recent decades, with winters expected to bring heavier rainfall in the future.

As communities look for practical responses, attention is turning towards nature-based flood prevention measures, often described as “Slow the Flow” approaches. These methods aim to work with nature to reduce the speed and volume of water moving through river catchments during storms.

Restoring wetlands, protecting peatlands, and planting native trees can help absorb and store excess rainfall naturally. Healthy soils, hedgerow, and woodland areas slow surface water runoff, reducing press-

ure on rivers and drainage systems downstream.

Many experts now believe that combining traditional flood defences with natural solutions offers a more sustainable longterm approach. While walls, embankments, and improved drainage remain important, natural flood management can provide additional protection while also supporting biodiversity and improving local landscapes.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) and local authorities continue to invest in

flood relief projects around the country.

At the same time, environmental organisations are encouraging communities to consider how land management, river restoration, and careful planning can reduce future flood risk.

Urban planning also has an important role to play. Avoiding development in floodprone areas and designing towns with green spaces and sustainable drainage systems can help improve resilience during severe weather.

Flood prevention is likely to remain an important issue for Ireland in the years ahead. However, many communities are now recognising that working with natural systems, rather than against them, may offer some of the most effective and sustainable solutions.

As a band they play for fun, to deliver cover favourites mixed with originals.

Their drive is the motivation that shines through.

As usual they had the crowd moving, Charley making her way through the audience whilst singing, engaging with the crowd and always so effortlessly.

Heavily involved in booking their own gigs, putting together line-ups, members playing in multiple bands, speaking out on political topics unashamedly, the true meaning of punk.

Festival of Ferns returns with The two-day Festival of Ferns returned to the streets of Ferns at the end of May with music – both medieval and modern, pageantry with Knights, Princesses, and Normans, and warriors, hurlers, dancers, colour, and the wonderful, dynamic drums of Bloco Garman.

The iconic Corner Boy band was one of the most popular attractions playing at the Castle to large crowds on Saturday evening along with many local musicians over the two-day event including Naomh Caoimhín Contae Loch Garman CCE and the magical Eternum – Aisling Williams and Myles Doyle in full medieval garb performing the beautiful She Moved Through the Fair and the famous 16th century Greensleeves.

The parade through the village stole the show led as it was by an energetic Superman with everyone walking and dancing to the vigorous beat of Bloco Garman.

In the Castle grounds the large stage was set for the pageant ‘Election of a King’, masterminded by director and actor and Ferns man – the well known and acclaimed Michael Dunbar.

Diarmuid Mac Murrough has just died and Wexford and Leinster need a new King. Richard de Clare, better known as Strongbow, with his band of heavily armed Normans is a strong contender – if you’ll pardon the pun.

So too is Diarmuid’s somewhat estranged brother Murchada of the Gael, who arrives with a very large axe and his band of merrymen... eh make that women.

And then there is Superman (where did he come from) who bounds on to the stage with his band of cheerleaders wildly waving purple pom poms.

Storyteller par excellence Michael Dunbar asks people to text their vote for one of the contenders to 1169 just as the Royal Attendant rushes on to the stage to announce that a fourth contender has arrived to throw his hat in the ring.

The contender is none other than King Henry 11 of England who storms on stage with his henchman wielding a very long and very sharp sword, to much booing and hissing from a very much engaged audience.

Henry launches into his Donald Trump routine and very soon the cowering Dunbar has no choice but to crown him King of Leinster and Ireland.

Words and some pics by Maria Nolan Silvertones Bring an Evening of Magic to St. Aidan’s On Thursday 28th May local Enniscorthy choir Silvertones brought a magical evening to St. Aidan’s Cathedral as part of the annual Bealtaine Festival celebrating ‘Creativity As We Age’.

MC’d by yours truly, I was happy to call on Musical Director Eithne Corrigan to introduce the first piece Lift Your Voice and Rejoice. Eithne, a graduate of Trinity College, studied piano and violin at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, is Musical Director of the award-winning Gorey Choral Group, Chorus Mistress of

Wexford Light Opera Society, and has been involved in a plethora of exciting projects, including the acclaimed musical Noel, by Eoin Colfer and Liam Bates.

She is passionate about collaboration and works regularly with singers, instrumentalists, and choral societies and currently accompanies the Wexford Festival Singers as well as proudly serving as Musical Director with Silvertones since its inception in 2009.

Eithne directed the Choir through two beautiful pieces – the poignant lullaby Once Upon A December from the Musical Anastasia – based on the legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia rumoured to have escaped and survived the execution of the Russian Imperial family, and a song of thanks – Count Your Blessings – reminding all of us to be grateful for what we have.

The Choir’s first guest was Irish Soprano, Clare Kavanagh, a native of Co. Wexford, a music studies graduate of Trinity College, who began her vocal studies with Deirdre Masterson and while based in London trained with Linda Hutchison and the English National Opera.

The second of the Choir’s prestigious guests, Eamonn Mulhall from Wexford town, began singing as a child with Sr. Mary Walsh at Loreto, Wexford, and after university went on to London to train as a tenor at the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio.

Eamonn has sung solo at some of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses, festivals, and concert stages, including La Fenice, Venice, Edinburgh Festival, Palau de la Musica, Catalana, Barcelona, Teatro Carlo Felice Genoa, Wexford Festival, National Theatre, Prague, English National Opera, Opera Rara, Krakow, Royal Ballet and Opera Linbury, Irish National Opera, and National Theatre, London.

The Silvertones performed Put A Little Love In Your Heart and Dream before being joined by Eamonn and Clare for the grand finale, a song special to my heart as one I heard often as a child sung by my grandmother Que Sera, Sera – What Will Be, Will Be. A most perfect and enjoyable evening of magical musical diversity and excellence, with inspiring guests Eamonn Mulhall and Clare Kavanagh, gifted musicians Yvonne Collier on keyboard, Ann Wickham – flute, Colette Cleary – bass guitar, the magnificently energetic Musical Director Eithne Corrigan and of course the marvellous Silvertones.

It was a privilege for me to be part of this wonderful event with all proceeds from the evening going to that most worthy of causes – the Hope Cancer Support Centre , Enniscorthy. n

Eamonn’s late mother Maura was a member of Silvertones and he was delighted to join them in concert performing the beautiful Ideale – a classic Italian love song of loss and longing.

Clare and Eamonn then came together to perform that moving duet from West Side Story – One Hand One Heart, where main characters Tony and Maria pledge their love for one another.

Silvertones then returned to the altar performing that timeless ballad recorded by Elvis in 1961 – Can’t Help Falling In Love, and one of my all-time favourites conjuring up images of Great Plains, Blue Ridge Mountains, the vast Missouri River, and the wide open spaces of Virginia, that sublime number – Shenadoah, which is thought to translate to Beautiful Daughter of the Stars in American Indian.

Eamonn Mulhall was back performing My Love is like a Red, Red Rose – a Scottish love song from the pen of the famous Scots poet Robbie Burns, and Terre E Mare – Between you and the Sea – written by Italian singer-songwriter Biagio Antonacci.

Congrats to Wexford’s Oyster Lane Theatre Group on their amazing run of Moments from the Musicals, a vibrant celebration of musical theatre performed at the National Opera House for three unforgettable nights.

This concert-style production brought together some of the most loved and instantly recognisable songs ever written for stage and screen performed by a talented cast of local performers – great music delivered with energy, warmth, and a genuine love for musical theatre. n

Local band set for Electric Picnic Local Wexford band The Wires will perform at this year’s Electric Picnic Festival having secured their spot by winning the inaugural CultureHead Battle of Bands competition, overcoming eight other bands chosen from an open call across Co. Wexford.

As part of their prize, band members Conor Keating, Corey Walsh, and Luke Mulvany will open the festival on the ArtLot Stage at the sold-out event on Friday afternoon, August 28.

This local initiative, supported by Creative Places Enniscorthy, provides emerging musicians from Wexford County the chance to showcase their talent at Ireland’s largest music festival.

Commenting on the prize, Bryan Steacy of Outrage Entertainment, who hosted the competition, said: “This year’s competition was highly competitive and a testament to the wonderful talents across Wexford County. A huge congratulations to The Wires, who have truly earned their place at this year’s festival.

We can’t wait to see their set, and it will no doubt lead to further opportunities for the band.”

Wexford public libraries and the Vodafone Foundation are partnering to remove barriers to digital access for older people in Co. Wexford.

Wexford Libraries has partnered with the Vodafone Foundation, through its Hi Digital programme, to make digital skills training more accessible for older people by introducing a tablet loan scheme.

The tablet loan scheme is available across all five public li-

braries in Co. Wexford. The initiative allows library members to borrow tablets that come ready to use with the free Hi Digital course already installed, removing common barriers such as lack of devices, confidence, or internet access at home. The tablets also come pre-loaded with data and popular apps such as BorrowBox and RTE player.

Hi Digital, in partnership with ALONE, is Vodafone Foundation’s free online course for older people, designed to build digital skills confidence through short, easy to follow online lessons. Learners can expect modules such as using smartphones, getting online, staying safe from scams, and using apps like WhatsApp, alongside quick tips and videos offering simple guidance on common digital tasks.

By enabling people to learn at their own pace, in a familiar community setting, the programme helps older adults build essential digital skills in a supportive and accessible way.

The tablets can be borrowed for a period of up to four weeks, and assistance is available from library staff in each of the five library branches across County Wexford.

A great night was had at the recent New Ross Municipal District Civic Awards, where the local councillors came together to recognise the extraordinary individuals, groups, and organisations who make the area a better place to live, work, and thrive in.

Held on Thursday 30th April in the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross, the awards were expertly organised by the staff of the New Ross Municipal District, rolling out the red carpet, so to speak, to make each recipient feel truly special and celebrated.

MC for the evening, District Manager Alan Fitzhenry, welcomed all and explained to the packed room at the Brandon House Hotel that a Civic Award is the highest honour the Municipal District can bestow. Enniscorthy’s successful inaugural Trad Weekend Words & pics by Maria Nolan Born from the flames of two of the most successful Fleadhanna ever, Enniscorthy’s inaugural Trad Weekend was the first in a series that are planned around the County in 2026 to create a lasting legacy from the incredible job that Wexford did in 2024 and 2025.

And it is only right that we should build on the triumph of the Wexford Fleadhanna and I commend the Committee for not just sitting around waiting and hoping for the Fleadh to return to Wexford but instead creating something to rise like the proverbial Phoenix from its ashes.

Festivals throughout the County enabling community committees to set up local festivals celebrating Irish culture.

The inaugural Enniscorthy weekend from 22nd to 24th May kicked off with the opening concert at Bellefield GAA Complex with musicians, dancers, and singers from Inis Corthaidh Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, and Celtic Roots.

Well known singers Margaret O’Neill Wall, Tim Corrigan, and Niall Wall, performed with sean nos dancers, set dancers and the wonderful Celtic Roots riverdance giving the appreciative audience jigs, reels, brush dances, and the Wexford Half Set. At a mere five euros per head it was amazing value for money and well attended and very well enjoyed.

The weekend continued with daytime set dancing workshops, tunes trails, singing sessions culminating in a Ceilí with the Templehouse Trio on the Saturday night.

Using town venues – the Presentation Centre, the Castle, the 1798 Rebellion Centre, Bellefield GAA Complex, Holohans Pub, and St. Senan’s Community Centre, the organising committee endeavoured to host this weekend in many of our iconic Enniscorthy buildings making it accessible to everyone.

Very well done to all concerned, as a first taster attempt it was extremely successful, enjoyable, and augurs well for Irish culture in the town as we look forward to it becoming one of our annual summer festivals here in Enniscorthy. n

New band ‘Scalder’ release debut single ‘Scalder’ are an Irish punk-inspired hard-rock band based primarily in Enniscorthy, scalder being a well known slang term for anyone from the town.

The band formed from the ashes of a previous popular local group called ‘Recoil’ who recently got back together to raise over €2,000 for the Hope Centre in Enniscorthy through a Shave or Dye gig.

‘Scalder’ consists of Evan Delaney on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Connor Lee Carr on Bass Guitar, Seán Healy on Rhythm Guitar, and Andrew Kehoe on Drums.

Their new single ‘Mass Hysteria’ is a very catchy song with heavy guitar riffs and growling vocals. It has a complete sense of isolation through the story-driven lyrics of loneliness in a town that has been abandoned.

The band is currently working on an album to be released in the coming months and in the meantime will be playing gigs all over the country.

‘A Love Like That’ is deeply human Standing ovation for ‘A Love Like That’ presented by Enniscorthy Theatre Company at the National Opera House, Wexford, last month.

A Love Like That recently ran for three nights at The Presentation Arts Centre in Ennniscorthy, and three nights at the National Opera House, Wexford, as a talented cast of Enniscorthy Theatre Company actors brought this sharp, darkly comic, and deeply human story by Billy Roche to life on stage, directed by Jim Ivers.

Described by Maria Nolan as being “set in a rural library that is about to close its doors, Ellen, the sharp-tongued, tight-assed acting librarian is transformed into a wild thing by the arrival of the charming no-good Lance who cons her out of money while her young ambitious assistant wipes her eye and behind her back becomes the front runner for the position of librarian.”

Maria continues: “A moving and evocative play with all the nuances of Billy Roche and all the flavours of Wexford town, it is an intriguing tale of many different kinds of love told warmly and sympathetically by Billy Roche and expertly delivered by five extremely talented actors – Kate Breen, Maeve Ennis, Fintan Kelly, Fergal Kelly, and Finbar Delaney.”

Wexford Arts Centre and Wexford County Council Arts Department, in partnership with South East Technological University, are pleased to present idir, a solo exhibition by Blaine O’Donnell.

Blaine O’Donnell is an artist working primarily in sculpture. Taking an experimental approach to the materials and debris of photography, architecture, and geology, he investigates the art object as a site for tracing networks of relationships between objects, humans, and places.

O’Donnell’s practice is deeply rooted in material experimentation, with material agency and chance contributing to the work’s form.

Using the interplay between sculptural forms, contrasting materials and architectural context, O'Donnell stages unfamiliar encounters to explore ontological associations between disparate things, frequently returning to the fundamental question of when something becomes something else.

In 2024, Blaine O'Donnell won the EMERGENCE Visual Artist Award, a partnership initiative between Wexford Arts Centre, Wexford Co. Council Arts Department, and South East Technological University. Presented biannually, the award has a monetary value of €15,000 and includes mentorship support over the award cycle to the value of €2,000 and a solo exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre. In addition, the artist has the opportunity to engage with the Arts Campus of South East Technological University. For the EMERGENCE Award, O’Donnell drew upon geological sites in County Wexford and the architecture of the Wexford Arts Centre building.

The Slaney News is delighted to have Enniscorthy man, Mark Cooke, on board as a columnist. Mark has a huge passion for growing fruit and veg which he shares on his Instagram platform @rootedinwexford which has over 7,500 followers.

Mark describes himself very much as a ‘hobby gardener’ who is not academically trained in horticulture. He started planting with very little knowledge a few years ago and that knowledge has now ‘mushroomed’! Mark loves sharing his passion for growing with our readers.

June feels like the month when the garden stops waiting for you. Over the past few months, we've been planning, sowing, planting, and trying to stay one step ahead of the weather. May brought a real sense of momentum, with warmer temperatures, stronger growth and plenty of opportunities to get crops established. If you were a little behind, there was still time to catch up. June feels different. Everything is growing whether you're ready or not.

By now, most gardens should be looking noticeably fuller than they did just a few weeks ago. Beds that seemed empty in spring are starting to fill out, seedlings are putting on strong growth, and greenhouse crops are beginning to find their stride. It's one of my favourite times of year because you finally start seeing the rewards of all those jobs that felt a bit thankless earlier in the season.

The courgettes are still sitting in pots waiting to go into the ground. I suspect many gardeners will know exactly how that happens. You sow them with the best intentions, they grow beautifully, and then somehow other jobs get in the way. Thankfully, there's still plenty of time to get them planted. Once they settle in, they usually make up for lost time very quickly.

The greenhouse has really come alive over the last few weeks. The tomatoes are growing strongly and flowers are starting to appear, which is always a welcome sight. This year I'm particularly interested to see how a couple of varieties perform. One is Orion's Belt, a compact dwarf tomato that produces striking striped fruit in shades of red, purple, green, and gold. The plant stays relatively small, making it ideal for containers and smaller growing spaces, but the fruit certainly makes up for its modest size. I'm also growing Curly Kaley, which caught my eye be-

One thing June teaches every year is that planting is only half the job. It's easy to look at a greenhouse full of healthy plants or a bed full of seedlings and think the hard work is done. In reality, this is often where the real work begins.

Tomatoes need tying in, watering becomes more important, and weeds seem to appear overnight. I've learned the hard way that skipping a week in June can easily turn into a much bigger job than expected.

Weeding is probably my biggest challenge at this time of year. A few small weeds don't

look like much when you're busy, but leave them for another week and suddenly they're competing with your crops for space, light, and nutrients. I've found that little and often works far better than waiting for the perfect free afternoon. Ten minutes here and there is usually enough to stay on top of things.

The longer evenings should make gardening easier, but I'm not convinced they create any extra time. If anything, the garden simply becomes better at showing me what I haven't done yet. Between work, family life, and everything else that fills a week, finding hours to spend in the garden isn't always realistic. A quick walk around with a watering can or hose, pulling a few weeds, and checking on plants often achieves more than waiting for a completely free day that never arrives.

June is also a good reminder not to stop sowing. As beds begin to fill up, it's tempting to think the planting season is finished. In reality, succession sowing now will keep harvests going for much longer. Salad leaves are a perfect example.

Sowing a small tray or short row every couple of weeks provides a steady supply through the summer rather than a mountain

of leaves all ready at once.

Outside, the battle with rabbits continues. Netting has helped enormously, but it's a constant reminder that we're not the only ones interested in the vegetables.

A little protection early on is far easier than trying to rescue crops once they've been discovered.

There are plenty of rewards appearing too. The strawberries are beginning to ripen and don't always make it as far as the kitchen. The grapevine is starting to form fruit, and seeing those tiny bunches develop never loses its appeal. These small moments are what make all the planning, sowing and maintenance worthwhile.

June sits in a nice place in the gardening calendar. The excitement of spring hasn't disappeared, but the first real harvests are beginning to arrive. The key this month is consistency. Keep sowing, keep watering, keep weeding, and try not to fall into the trap of thinking the work is finished. A little effort now will pay dividends in the months ahead. n

Students visit Enniscorthy Community Allotments from NUI Maynooth.

We are grateful as always to Gillian O’Neill, Secretary at Enniscorthy Community Allotments (ECA), for keeping us updated with all the news and photos from this multi-award-winning facility in Enniscorthy...

We were delighted to welcome final-year Degree and Masters students in Community & Youthwork from NUI Maynooth to the allotments last month as part of their Comparative Studies trip. It was a great opportunity to share our story, discuss the importance of relationships between local communities and state agencies, and explore how shared spaces like ours can actively engage and support the people around us. A big thank you to

WWETB for organising the visit. We love opening our gates to those interested in seeing community education in action.

We were also delighted to have a visit from the board of directors of Wexford Local Development and the Leader Evaluation Committee last month. As our initial funders back in December 2021, it was a privilege and honour to welcome all these lovely people to the allotments and show them how much the project has developed and the impact this fabulous multiaward-winning facility has had on our members and the wider community.

month. The event was fully booked and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks so much to Wexford PPN, Wexford County Council, and Healthy Ireland for making this happen.

Our little buds were busy decorating the May Bush in the allotments and are now really looking forward to planting their pumpkin patch.

We are after having a phenomenal response to our Reach funding workshops this year and the Willow Weaving, Food Preservation, Growing Mushrooms, and Herbalism workshops are all fully booked.

The final two workshops will be Nature Therapy and will be starting in August.

Nature Therapy is spiritual guidance through nature which involves using the outdoors as a setting for inner healing, grounding, and self discovery. It cultivates mindfulness, interconnectedness, and emotional balance. If you are interested in taking part keep an eye out on our Facebook and Instagram pages for more information nearer the time.

Our Open Day this year will be held on Sunday 28th June. This will be an ideal opportunity for you to come and visit our fabulous allotments and see for yourself everything that it has to offer. Co. Wexford’s success in food production Girlfriends often use it to describe boyfriends, husbands to wives and vice versa, clients to describe banks, creditors and the county council, and family members to describe siblings.

It’s the Serenity Prayer, not the one created by Saint Francis, but by the American theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr.

Michael Murphy, the former interim CEO of Bord Bia, now a management coach, quotes it in a context of the struggles of food producers.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

He quoted it to an attendance or more than 60 people at GreenTechHQ in Senan House, Enniscorthy, in his capacity as honorary president of the Wexford Food Producers Network (WFPN).

The prayer continues: “Living one day at a time, Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace…”

Accepting hardship and overcoming it seemed to be a common characteristic of food producers. Michael Murphy should know. In his work with Bord Bia (the Irish Food Board), he has interacted with producers, wholesalers, retailers, diplomats, and government ministers in events all over the world in the promotion of Irish food.

Although retired from Bord Bia and now managing his consultancy firm, Pro U Coaching and Agri-food Support, he continues to promote quality food production. In doing so, he wanders between Dublin and his native Wexford where he grew up on the family farm at Raheenduff, Oulart, went to Oulart NS and then St Peter’s College before going to UCD and graduating there in agricultural economics. He also has UCD Smurfit Coaching and Sustainability diplomas.

In his talk themed “The Business of Food”, hosted by GreenTechHQ, he urged County Wexford food producers to be resilient in the face of adversity.

“My definition of resilience is the ability to get back up and function after a setback or a pushback. It is very hard to survive in business without a store of resilience.

“You build resilience over time through

small and large crises, where you have to dig deep to pull through or find a new solution. I genuinely don’t believe you can build resilience without some hardship.”

He said you need confidence, purpose, social support, and adaptability. For Confidence: Belief in yourself and in your ability to shape a positive future. For Purpose – clarity on what really matters to you and what you want to achieve in life. For Social Support – have a strong connection to those who support you; willingness to reach out when you need that help. And for Adaptability – be flexible in adapting your approach to different situations. You’ll also need physical and psychological fitness.

A Profile of Michael Murphy Having spent most of the last three decades working with Bord Bia, Michael Murphy is equipped to speak with authority and credibility for the county’s food producers His first role in Bord Bia was as the beef specialist during the BSE crisis in 1996/97. Because this became a huge issue for Irish food and our international reputation, he moved to head up the Press team to defend and protect Ireland’s international reputation working alongside the Department of Agriculture and embassies around the world.

On surviving that, he was appointed Bord Bia’s UK Manager which was his first people-management role.

After seven years in London, he moved back to Dublin as European Director and two years later became Global Markets director heading up all Bord Bia customer engagement in Ireland and around the world.

In the aftermath of the ‘Crash’, Bord Bia moved to establish MSc progammes to attract the best and brightest emerging talent to the Irish food and drinks industry. In addition to the markets role, he developed and led the Bord Bia Talent Academy. This has developed into much sought after MSc programmes in marketing, sustainability, and business development with two business schools.

In 2018, Bord CEO Tara McCarthy asked him to lead a Bord Bia People Transformation Agenda involving optimising recruitment, engaging staff in the purpose and strategy of the business, making performance management about actionable feedback and L&D and talent and succession planning.

He left Bord Bia at the end of April 2024 to pursue his passion for people development and empowerment. He completed a Business and Executive Coaching Diploma in UCD and working with a small number of clients on a consultancy/project basis.

Crises During his three decades in Bord Bia, he said Ireland became very good at Crisis Management. This included the 1996 BSE Crisis, 2001 Foot and Mouth Crisis, 2007 – Dioxin Crisis, 2013 – Horsemeat, 2016 – Brexit, and 2020 – Covid- 19. He said: “As you navigate a crisis, every business owner should think ‘What is the gift?’ and ‘How can I motivate others around to help make a lasting change?’

WFPN Strategy When he took on the role of Honorary President of Wexford Food Producers Network (WFPN), he put a strategy subgroup in place to work on the strategy.

Tom Sinnott, Wexford Food Preserves, Pat O’Neill, O'Neill’s Bacon, Katherine Kinsella, Saltrock Dairy, and Owen Mullins, Zana Cookhouse, and Michael met continually.

They surveyed members and presented a draft strategy. They consulted Wexford County Council.

“We didn’t want the strategy to be complex, glossy, and gather dust. We wanted it to be clear, focused, and actionable. Therefore, it is just three pages rather than a tome!”

Their vision was: Wexford’s food and drink industry to be renowned as a national leader, celebrated in the county and across Ireland for its elite craftmanship and superior product quality, and their purpose was that WFPN serve as a memberled representative body dedicated to the sustainable growth of County Wexford’s food and drink industry by fostering peerto-peer support and strategic guidance.

This would be a network to share expertise, contacts, and experience, and drive awareness and preference for Wexford products, contribute to Wexford’s economy, and promote food as an attractive career option.

Three-Year Heads of Agreement On Friday 24th April 2026, Wexford County Council and the Wexford Food Producers Network signed a new three-year Heads of Agreement to support the future growth and development of Wexford’s food and drink sectors. This is a threeyear agreement spanning the period 2026-2028, which is to support the implementation of a new Strategy – ‘Scaling Wexford Food and Drink – Driving Operational Growth and Brand Recognition 2026–2028’.

Michael said: “I would like to use this opportunity to pay tribute to Breege Cosgrave, the outgoing Head of Enterprise at Wexford County Council.”

“My parting messages are: Never waste a good crisis to dramatically change your business systems. A problem shared is a problem halved – use the Wexford Food Producers Network.”

He encourages young people thinking of a career in food production or farming to consider the Bord Bia Masters in Business Sustainability and Masters in Marketing Practice.

Books that he recommends are: Discover Your True North by Bill George, Competitive Advantage by Michael Porter, and The 100 Year Life by Lynda Gratton.

There was a full house on 7th May 2026 at GreenTechHQ, Enniscorthy Technology Park, for a ‘Business of Wexford Food’ event co-hosted by the Wexford Food Producers Network and The Food Studio @ GreenTechHQ, in association with Wexford County Council and Local Enterprise Office Wexford.

The Food Studio @ GreentechHQ was launched in 2025 and is a collaborative space for food entrepreneurs, producers, and innovators across the Southeast, with the aim of supporting sustainable food production, promoting Southeast regional excellence, and fostering opportunities for innovation, food marketing, testing, and collaboration. The Food Studio was co-funded by a LEADER grant through Wexford Local Development and serves as a platform for promoting the re-

gion’s food producers while opening the door to innovation kitchens, testing labs, and export opportunities. It also plays a role in supporting education and mentoring for emerging food businesses.

The event entitled the ‘Business of Wexford Food’ is the first in a series aimed at supporting Wexford’s Food & Drinks producers, tourism and hospitality, and agrifood sectors. While targeting existing Wexford food producers of all sizes, the ‘Business of Wexford Food’ series is also designed to engage with new and emerging food producers, food business owners, chefs, restauranteurs, hoteliers, and the agri-food sector.

Wexford’s Food & Drinks producers, tourism and hospitality, and agri-food sectors face major problems from soaring input/labour costs, retailer margin

squeeze, food security threats (climate, supply chain), and fierce competition, alongside needing tech investment for new EU rules (plastics, traceability) and digital skills, while consumer spending habits shift due to menu price inflation, straining producers, hospitality, and farmers, threatening national food selfsufficiency despite strong exports.

To address some of these issues, the ‘Business of Wexford Food’ series will present a series of speakers to address key issues facing these sectors. They will share their experience, knowledge, and expertise, focusing on important areas such as sustainability, innovation, local food systems, and technology.

Michael presented the new member-led strategy: ‘Scaling Wexford Food and Drink – Driving Operational Growth and Brand Recognition 2026–2028’ which has just been launched by the Wexford Food Producers Network.

A key focus in the strategy is contributing to Wexford’s economic wellbeing particularly in terms of Wexford’s tourism and hospitality sectors in key areas such as experience and identity. These will be achieved through engagement with Fáilte Ireland and Visit Wexford through the new DEDP Plan for County Wexford. Attracting future generations to establish food production businesses in Co. Wexford and the positioning of Co. Wexford as an attractive option for prospective employees are also key features of the new strategy.

A new Diploma in Speciality and Artisan Food Enterprises at University College Cork was launched as part of this inaugural event. This new Level 7 University Diploma, delivered by UCC’s Food Industry Training Unit, is being highlighted as a strategic education and capability-build-

ing pillar for the region’s rapidly growing artisan and speciality food sector.

Ciarán MacGann was another presenter at the event. He is AIB’s Head of Manufacturing, Food & Fishing, and is passionate about supporting SMEs and is a strong advocate for sustainable finance.

Presenter Tracie Daly is an award-winning entrepreneur with extensive experience in both the food and education sectors. She is a qualified executive business coach, chef, food safety advisor, and is also a regular on Ireland’s national food festival circuit. Tracie works with Darina Allen and Rory O’Connell at Ballymaloe Country House & Cookery School and with their Ballymaloe Foods brand.

The Wexford Food Producers Network provides a centralised member-led and member-representative organisation with a core remit to promote and support the business of Wexford food. The organisation has approximately fifty members who are Wexford-based micro enterprises, SMEs, and large companies. Their continued aim is to support Wexford food and drink producers, to build a sustainable food industry, and to contribute significantly to the Irish economy on a local, regional, and national level. n

AMBITIOUS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO ATTRACT INVESTMENT AND BUSINESS TO CO. WEXFORD County Wexford Chamber has launched a new campaign designed to position the county as a leading destination for living, working, investing, and doing business. ‘Look to Wexford’ highlights Wexford’s strong ecosystem for enterprise, showcasing the multinational companies, family businesses, and local enterprises going global that call Wexford home.

Wexford has a population of more than 163,000 people, produces 10% of Ireland’s total food output, and has a diverse economic base with 22 international companies.

The campaign includes a series of videos and podcasts telling the stories of the people who have grown their careers in Wexford, the people who have returned to the county, and those leading the next generation of innovation and sustainability.

The campaign also positions Wexford at the forefront of Ireland’s growing green energy revolution.

Featured throughout the campaign are the people behind companies manufacturing medical devices used every second worldwide, the technology platform enabling 200 million deliveries annually, and a nutrition company exporting 350 products to 50 countries.

Wexford native and former Ireland rugby player Gordon D’Arcy said, “What has always amazed me about Wexford... is the number of people who choose to come back home and the energy, ambition, and experience they bring with them when they do. We’re now seeing a new generation of successful entrepreneurs and business leaders asking, ‘Why can’t we build that here in Wexford?’ That mindset is creating real momentum across the county.”

Visit Wexford has launched its 2026 ‘Find Your Summer’ campaign, inviting domestic and overseas visitors to experience Ireland’s sunny southeast as the county prepares for another strong tourism season.

The campaign will run throughout the summer season across Ireland and key overseas ferry-accessible markets, including the UK, Germany, France, and Spain, positioning Wexford as one of Ireland’s leading holiday destinations. Visitors planning a trip to Wexford can also access exclusive ‘Find Your Summer’ offers from tourism providers across the county, alongside event listings, accommodation information, attractions, and itineraries through visitwexford.ie.

Developed by Visit Wexford and supported by Wexford County Council, the campaign celebrates the many ways visitors can experience summer across the county’s key destinations, including Wexford Town, Gorey, New Ross, Rosslare, Enniscorthy, the Hook Peninsula, and Kilmore Quay.

Gorey firm to develop South African market Expansion into South Africa is on the cards for Goreybased eLearning company QedON which has developed a highly successful digital educational platform.

QedON already provides a range of educational platforms – from healthcare to beauty and nutrition and from business skills to retail – to an extensive list of business, institutions and State clients. Now the company, based in The Hatch Lab in Gorey and supported by Enterprise Ireland through its High Potential Start-Up (HPSU) programme, has high hopes for its newly developed ExpertEd online service.

ExpertEd is a shared eLearning platform that allows industry experts, trainers, and organisations to create, host, and sell professional online courses. It gives businesses access to affordable, high-quality learning and development solutions without needing to build their own platform or internal training infrastructure.

“ExpertEd was developed to meet a need which we noticed in companies and organisations,” explains Susan Madden, Chief of Education at QedON, “There was a lot of expert knowledge out there but no way for companies to acquire that unless at considerable expense.”

A new era begins at Byrnes

Byrnes began on Court Street in Enniscorthy in 1976 when Jim and Frances Byrne opened the original Byrnes store – the first bookshop in the town.

Over the years it expanded into toys, cards, stationery, etc, and expanded also into Wexford town and Gorey. It now also has a huge office and school supplies division.

In 2019 it formed a connection with the Eason brand but on 30th May this year it relaunched back under its original name – Byrnes, and celebrated with a family fun day in-store, with face painting, balloons, competitions, prizes, and lots more. The name change will allow it connect better with the local community which has supported the business so well over the last fifty years.

Byrnes is now entering a new era with, in the words of proprietor Damian Byrne, “the family name back at the front of the business.” n

Did you know, bagged dog waste can go in any public litter bin?

The wonderful Tidy Towns volunteers around the county are still finding bagged dog poo discarded in landscaped areas, in planters, left on top of walls, or just dropped on the footpaths.

These groups are exasperated by this ongoing problem, saying, “There’s just no excuse!” because you don’t need to find a dedicated dog-waste bin, bagged dog waste can go in any public litter bin!

Leaving dog mess behind isn’t an option, so if the nearest dog bin is full or too far away, just use a general litter bin, or bring it home and dispose of it in your own household waste bin. n

VET DIARY FOR JUNE On the 12th June coming we will be running our 4th seminar on Regenerative Agriculture.

The whole concept of Regenerative Ag is to help bring the land, especially the top soil, back to life. The topsoil is the living layer of the land and in an ideal situation it is packed with microbial activity, earthworms, dung beetles, all working symergistically to bring vitality and balance back to the land.

With intensification on farm, farmers are forced to carry more numbers of cows, use more synthetic fertilisers, more sprays and chemicals, reacting compaction of this very valuable topsoil.

The implication of the compaction is that there is no air getting into the soil then. Like a calf or a lamb or ourselves, there are a few basic requirements that the microbes need in the soil. They need oxygen like ourselves to function. They need water, but when soil becomes compacted it either becomes waterlogged in wet times or bone dry in dry periods. If the soil is too wet the microbes drown, too dry and they dehydrate and die too. In a healthy soil the earthworms aerate the soil, breaking up compaction and helping restore the balance for a healthy microbiome in the land.

A healthy microbiome in the soil helps the plants absorb more micronutrients, trace elements, and allows them to flourish. In turn the animals grazing this land have a much more nutrientdense feed, they thrive and with this excellent diet comes excellent health. This ultimately works for us as these animals and plants we eat from these farms that are regenerating the land are more nutrient dense, less or no chemicals, and leads to a win-win situation for the land, her stock , the farmers and the consumer.

Robbie Byrne is our other speaker and is an agronomist who has led the charge bringing regenerative agriculture to a wider audience of farmers and general public alike. He works with farmers who are farming from a few acres to those who have thousands of acres. He has been successfully helping guide commercial farms to a more environmentally friendly but more viable future too. He is an active member of BASE Ireland and an excellent speaker.

There will be talks on Saturday 13th June in the Church Institute in Enniscorthy with the GREAT Éanna Ní Lamhna on biodiversity, herbalist talks with Shona Patterson, Michael Devereux on community allotments, and on Sunday 14th we will host Prof Verner Wheelock on food – the myths and what a healthy diet should include. Alicia Haroer will do a demo on fermenting foods and also a talk on healthy eating too.

The mid-range K3 (€34,000) is likely to be the sweet spot for most buyers, adding larger 17-inch alloy wheels, upgraded headlights, synthetic leather upholstery and wireless smartphone charging.

The flagship GT Line tested here costs €38,500 and adds sportier styling, sunroof, ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, along with an automatic gearbox as standard.

Under the bonnet, Kia Ireland is keeping things simple for now with a 1.0-litre mild hybrid petrol engine producing 115hp. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox, though that is trim dependant.

On paper, performance is modest, with the automatic taking 12.3 seconds to reach 100km/h. But in everyday driving the K4 feels more capable than the figures suggest.

The K4’s biggest strength is arguably its value proposition. In a market where family cars are becoming increasingly expensive, Kia has delivered a stylish and practical hatchback with generous standard equipment and low running costs. n

John to represent Ireland in Australia Co. Wexford’s John Asple James, 19 years old, is set to represent Ireland on the world stage by competing in the International Tetrathlon competition taking place in Australia next month.

his tetrathlon career to date. The team will be leaving Ireland at the end of June and will be back late July which John believes is ideal as it means it will be the cooler weather in Australia.

Tetrathlon is a competition run in different places around the world by each country's pony club. It involves running, swimming, shooting, and most importantly horse riding. What is involved with each discipline differs depending on the country e.g. how far you have to run / swim, the type of targets you shoot at, or what kind of jumps you jump on the horse.

John says, “I am very grateful to everyone who has helped me get this far and supported me on this journey to representing Ireland by doing something I love.”

We wish John all the best in his upcoming adventure in Australia. n

In Ireland, participants have to run three kilometres cross country, swim as far as they can in four minutes in a swimming pool, shoot targets from ten metres away with air pistols, and ride a one-metre-high cross-country course on a horse. These are all done separately, usually over one or two days.

John got into this sport through the pony club that he joined when he was eight years old and since a lot of his friends were doing minimus at the time (the younger version of tetrathlon with no shooting) he thought it would be a good idea to give it a try. Since then John has been progressing up through the age groups.

It has been difficult for John to stick with the sport as all his friends, over time, have stopped doing it due to other commitments, but John says, “I pushed on and eventually made friends from across the country that kept it up like me.”

John and other Irish participants travel to England every year to compete but John says being picked for the Irish team going to Australia is a huge achievement and the pinnacle of

Bree Billiards & Snooker Club In February, Bree Billiards & Snooker Club introduced a new format club tournament.

This consisted of teams of two players competing in one billiards (to 200) and one snooker frame, with 1 point awarded for each frame won. Full handicaps applied. 14 players entered, drawn into 7 teams who played each other on a round-robin basis.

Ray Cullen and Tommy Butler finished on top with 9 points. John Bolger and Cathal Comey finished on 8 points, so these teams met in the final on May 6th.

Phil Walsh marked the board, while John Wilson refereed the match.

First order of play was the snooker game, with Ray (-2) vs Cathal (+11). Cathal led 35/14, with 5 colours left. Ray took green, then brown and blue, closing to 35/26. Next visit he potted the pink, now it was a black ball game, poised at 35/32.

Cathal held his nerve to take the black and win the frame.

Next up was the billiards pairing of John (-5) v Tommy (+30). John started strong, closing the gap to 50/51 following consistent breaks. Now it was anyone's

game, and both players continued to score evenly, with John soon leading by 114/99. He extended the margin to a scoreline of 186/136. With Tommy needing a considerable break to close the gap, it was not to be, and John emerged the winner on a scoreline of 200/150.

Festy to play in local game for charity CIE Promotions is proud to host a huge Charity Football Match against Enniscorthy United on 6th of June at 4pm at the new Astro Turf Pitch on the Ross Road, Enniscorthy. This special event will bring together football fans, players, and the local community for an exciting day all in aid of St Vincent de Paul in Enniscorthy.

The CIE XI team will be led by Mick Abidoye Jnr and will feature Irish international Festy Ebosele from Enniscorthy. The squad will also include talented players such as John Peare, Ben Nugent, Angison Rivet, Joseph Akinyemi, Ashley Kabuba, and John Illunga, along with football league players, Eire Season boxers, and special guests travelling from Manchester in England.

Wexford Normandy Cultural Association June Talk - Raising Awareness - 2027 European Year of the Normans.

Wexford Normandy Cultural Association’s next event is a talk by Luke Bradley. Luke is a tour guide employed in the Irish National Heritage Park with an MA in Public History and Cultural Heritage.

Luke's talk is entitled 'The Man Who Sold Ireland – the Legacy of Dermot MacMurrough' and will take place on Thursday, June 18th, at 7pm in Wexford Library.

Dermot MacMurrough is a historical figure with few equals in Irish history. Over eight hundred years after his death, he remains reviled by many of his countrymen who believe him to be a traitor who opened the gates to invasion and centuries of occupation. His decision to collaborate with Richard fitz Gilbert de Clare ‘Strongbow’ on an invasion of Ireland is a watershed moment in Irish history that put Ireland on a new path that led to further conquest and colonisation, albeit many years after Dermot’s death.

But to what extent can Dermot be considered a traitor? Is he truly responsible for what's often called ‘800 years of occupation'? How has Dermot's reputation changed in the centuries since his passing? In this talk, Luke Bradley will tackle these big questions.

A Big Birthday for a Very Special Lady...

Well-known local historian and genealogist Gloria Binnions celebrated her 85th birthday in style at Rackards, Killanne, recently amid a very large crowd of family, friends and wellwishers.

Gloria is a remarkable woman whose knowledge of local history and ancestry in the parish of Killanne and beyond is second to none and a great many of the people present at the very well organised evening were people that Gloria has helped to find their ancestors.

Like John Leitch from Dallas, Texas, who travelled to be with Gloria for her celebrations and to enjoy the iconic session in an Irish pub.

And he wasn’t disappointed as Gloria had drafted a programme of musical entertainment par excellence for the entire evening.

I was delighted to meet with John as he is a friend on that wonderfully interactive forum Facebook and reads my books.

He has sent me details of his Wexford ancestry in particular Susan Bassett from Tintern – a most remarkable woman and two of his ancestors who were burned in one of those tragic events of the 1798 Rebellion, in the barn at Scullabogue.

The local Uí Cinsealaigh Historical Society is inviting authors to submit papers on ‘The Normans in County Wexford, 1169-2026’ for a special edition of 'The Past', its historical journal, to celebrate 2027 as 'The Year of The Normans'.

John’s Irish ancestry comes from his father’s side, his name being Leitch or Leech as it is known in Wexford and he told me that his mother’s ancestors came to America on the Mayflower, making them very well-to-do English, indeed.

However, John says he has always been more drawn to his Irish connections and Gloria has assisted him greatly with locating cemeteries, headstones, and even ruins of the house that Susan Bassett would have been born in.

John has a wonderful collection of correspondence between Susan and her sisters in New Ross after the Rebellion, and it is his third time to visit Wexford and he very much hopes not his last.

What a wonderful event it was in Killanne and a marvellous testament to the evergreen Gloria and the magnificent legacy she is passing on.

Young Environmentalist winners Ireland’s most inspiring young environmental changemakers were celebrated last month as ECO-UNESCO announced the winners of the Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA) 2026 at a national showcase event in Dublin, with a number of projects from Coláiste Bríde, Enniscorthy, winning awards.

The annual awards programme, one of Ireland’s largest youth environmental initiatives, celebrated young people aged 10–18 who have developed projects addressing major environmental and social challenges including biodiversity loss, climate change, waste reduction, sustainable transport, and food sustainability.

Held on Tuesday 12th May at the Concert Hall in the Royal Dublin Society (RDS), the event brought together over 1,000 students, teachers, families, community leaders, and policymakers to celebrate youth-led environmental action from young people across the country. A total of 110 finalist groups representing 26 counties showcased projects tackling key environmental challenges including biodiversity loss, climate change, waste reduction, sustainable transport, energy conservation, and health & wellbeing.

The finalists were selected following a nationwide series of ECO-Dens semi-finals held in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Armagh, and online, where more than 1,100 young people took part in Dragon’s Den-style presentations judged by environmental and industry experts.

Elaine Nevin, National Director of ECO-UNESCO, said: “The creativity, innovation and passion demonstrated by this year’s finalists has been truly inspiring. From biodiversity conservation and sustainable fashion campaigns to climate action and community initiatives, these young people are showing the important role youth can play in creating positive environmental change. The Young Environmentalist Awards continue to highlight the power of youth-led action and we are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of all the finalists and winners involved this year.”

ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards Final: Three groups – Backyard Biodiversity, Nitrogen Footprints, and Be Water Wise – proudly represented Coláiste Bríde, Enniscorthy, this year, with the school winning two categories – a huge achievement.

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns’ bug hotels

Thanks to Enniscorthy Men's Shed, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns was able to donate three bug hotels like this one to to local primary schools.

Thanks to Enniscorthy Men's Shed, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns group was recently able to donate three bug hotels to local primary schools.

These structures are being placed by the schools off the ground in shaded, dry, and warm locations.

Habitats for insects, such as these bug hotels, is a recommendation of the Enniscorthy Community Biodiversity Action Plan. n

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns volunteers are doing a lot of work at present on their anti-dog-fouling campaign including the use of stencils and spray paint to spray “Bag It, Bin It” messages on footpaths which are prone to dog fouling. Dog poo contains harmful bacteria, is unsightly, gets on shoes, buggies, wheelchairs etc and, of course, is a big problem for visually impaired people. The Tidy Towns group is pleading with dog owners to practise responsible dog ownership, pick up after your dog and bin that poo. n

Enniscorthy’s balsam bashers!

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns, Sustainable Enniscorthy, and Enniscorthy Community Alliance, have, over recent weeks, been busy tackling the destructive Himalayan Balsam invasive species.

On Tuesday 12 May, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns joined local wildflower enthusiast Aedín Ní Thiarnaigh for an impromptu ‘Balsam Bash’ at the Slaney Nature Trail. Six people took part. See https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYRQiJIuzs/?igsh=Y3c1MmtucDdxY215 On Friday 15 May, eight volunteers from Enniscorthy Tidy Towns and Enniscorthy Community Alliance spent the afternoon pulling Himalayan Balsam starting from the playground at the Slaney Riverside trail south of Enniscorthy.

The following morning on Saturday 16 May there were 12 volunteers removing balsam at the Slaney Nature Trail – another lovely wooded riverside trail, north of the town. The group included a young family, new and long-standing volunteers, and a guest from the Wexford Environmental Network.

Both those events were part of National Biodiversity Week, May 15th – 24th.

On Thursday 28th May they were out in force again at The Prom, this time under the watchful eye of a team from RTE's 'Nationwide' programme.

We look forward to seeing another balsam bashing event for Invasive Species Week 22-28 June 2026. More details to follow. n
