The Enniscorthy Business Association (EBA) deserves great credit for uniting the town’s businesses in a major initiative to keep business (and jobs) in Enniscorthy this Christmas and beyond.

Locals and visitors to the town can now look forward over the coming weeks to customerfriendly shop opening hours: ★ Open ‘til late every Thursday night until Christmas. ★ Open Sunday 9th and 16th 1pm to 5pm, and open Sunday 23rd December 10am to 6pm. ★ Great Christmas Raffle organised by local retailers with €3,000 in prizes (see page 4).

Christmas in Enniscorthy kicked off in style with the Enniscorthy Christmas Festival on 1st December featuring a Christmas Parade, Carol Singing and Street Party followed by the official turning on of the town’s fantastic new festive lighting by Santa Claus himself.

Later in the day Bellefield GAA Complex hosted a major event: “Christmas Variety and Carols in Enniscorthy” showcasing a host of local talent.

Annie Gilpin and her team from the Co. Wexford Strawberry Fair Committee deserve huge praise for this spectacular event and we hope it will become an annual fixture on the town’s Christmas calendar. n

Enniscorthy’s Gala Christmas Raffle Approximately 80 of Enniscorthy’s traders, organised by the Enniscorthy Business Association, have come together this Christmas to allow their customers participate in a major Christmas Raffle with €3,000 in prizes.

For every €10 you spend in the participating outlets you collect a token to put on the competition card provided by the various outlets, once your card contains 10 tokens it is entered in a major draw with shopping voucher prizes worth €3,000 in total: €1,500

for the winner, €1,000 for second and €500 for third. The Gala Christmas Draw will take place on Sunday 23rd December in the Market Square.

Thanks to funding from Enniscorthy Town Council a new set of Christmas street lights has been purchased, erected and switched on in the t o w n o n S a t u r d a y, 1 s t December.

The lights feature a host of Christmas designs and colours, including dropping lights to hang on trees and a very festive makeover for the Town Council building in the Market Square.

President of Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce, Colm Neville, said that the Chamber were very excited about the effect the new lights would have on the town: “I think it will transform the town this year and the lights are a great investment for the years to come. We are very appreciative of the Town Council’s investment and we together with the Traders Association are fully committed to raising

the funds for the erection of the lights around town. We would like to acknowledge and thank all of those who both organised and supported the summer barbecue to raise much needed funds for the erection of these lights. The Chamber would like to acknowledge in particular the generosity of Creane and Creane insurance brokers who have made a special, significant contribution towards the erection of the lights this year, in support of all the traders and businesses of Enniscorthy with whom they do business.”

Town Clerk Mr. Padraig O’Gorman stated that Enniscorthy Town Council are very pleased to sponsor the new festive town lights as an economic development measure of supporting Enniscorthy businesses over the important Christmas shopping period. n

Facebook Privacy hoax Recently there have been a lot of people posting a "Facebook Privacy Notice" on their wall, declaring that by doing so, Facebook has no legal right to your content. The reality is, however, reposting this message just fills Facebook up with even more pointless nonsense and misinformation.

The Hoax states that: "Facebook is now a publicly traded entity. Unless you state otherwise, anyone can infringe on your right to privacy once you post to this site." A publicly traded entity just means that stocks or shares can be bought in the company, not the data.

These hoaxes prey on people’s fears and knee-jerk reactions to automatically assume the worst. A wall post is not a legal binding contract, if it was I could just as easily state: “By reading this post I now own your house” or “I no longer have to pay taxes” and it would be true. If you’re ever in doubt about something you see on

Facebook or indeed the internet the simplest thing to do is just Google it.

I’ll be writing about how to make your Facebook page more secure in next month’s issue for anyone who is concerned about their privacy.

Enniscorthy Library will host a flower arranging demonstration with a seasonal theme on Thursday December 13th at 7:30pm.

The theme will be Christmas flower designs.

Helen Battigan who lives in Bunclody will be the guest flower arranger. Helen is a demonstrator for the association of Irish Floral Artists and is a member of the County Wexford Garden and Flower Club and will take over as Chairperson in January 2013. She is also a keen gardener.

Young retailer to face dragons?

Eighteen-year-old Denise Brophy is a young retailer in Enniscorthy - she owns Glitterati Boutique on Rafter Street.

Denise recently applied for the Junior Dragons Den series that is set to air in 2013.

Her application was successful and on November 23rd she took part in the South Leinster Regional Heat in the Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow. Here she had to set up a stall in the lobby along with 16 other competitors and a panel of 3 judges, representatives from the sponsors, the Bank of Ireland, browsed the stalls and asked Denise and the other competitors various questions about their businesses.

Only seven enterprises could go through to the National Final and Denise was chosen as one of those. The National Final will take place

On a totally unrelated topic, we had a good night on the 23rd of November in Rackards Bar, Enniscorthy. Wasn’t just a session now, before you all start.

We hosted our second annual Moustachioed Table Quiz for Movember. Now, first off we would like to thank Rackards and their great staff for the use of the hall and the food… and

the spot prizes!! Speaking of spot prizes, the following businesses kindly donated, Ziggy’s Hair Design, Turkuts, Crystal Script, MAD Restaurant, Brand U and anyone else that donated a prize, your help, time and effort were greatly appreciated.

Technology was not on our side however and I had to shout as opposed to MC. Didn’t mind, I’m very loud without a microphone (apparently…..). We’ve all been there. You’re full of turkey, spuds, ham, gravy, the begrudgingly eaten brussel sprout, followed by ice cream, sprinkles and the cup of tea or whiskey, depending on your preference. You sit down in your favourite chair, take out the TV Guide. You grumble and you say, “Same oul shite, Coronation Street, Eastenders, Fair f***in’ City, Strictly Dancing On Me Arse.

F*** this, I’m turning on a dvd….”. Well, dear reader, sit down and relax the kecks. I am here to guide you through what I feel are the five perfect films to watch over the festive period. We start in a building, well a plaza to be more precise:

DIE HARD (1989) Woah, hold the pony there Murphy. Die Hard, a Christmas film? Are you high? No, I am not. Let’s weigh up the evidence here. First off, the film takes place over the FESTIVE PERIOD!!, a blinding clue to anyone with a pair of eyes.

Another one occurs when McClane is coming through the airport, he’s carrying a giant teddy bear. Now, it’s never fully explained but one could safely say he’s bringing it home to his young daughter.

I know crazy right. That poor German terrorist that gets it in the lift is left with a sly remark on his jumper, “Now I have a machine gun, ho-hoho.”

W h e n M c C l a n e l u re s Gruber into a false sense of security near the film’s climax, he straps his weapon to his back using fun festive tape.

Then as our hero, John and his put-upon wife, Bonnie, leave the Nakatomi Plaza, they are met with a lovely white blanket of Christmassy snow.

To add to the festive cheer, as they are carted away on the back of what looks like a golf cart, Dean Martin’s velvet tones ease into ear shot and he croons, “Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful.. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.” Die Hard, one of the best Christmas films ever, motherf***er!

GREMLINS (1984) The first Gremlins film is a black comedy set against a Christmas time back drop. The plot revolves around Billy’s (Zach Gilligan) father searching for a Christmas present for his teenage son. He stumbles across a creature called a Mogwai in a small antiques shop in Chinatown. The owner of the store warns Billy’s father that owning one is too much responsibility and refuses to sell it to him. But the owner’s grandson sells the Mogwai saying the family needs the money. And

he gives him three rules for the Mogwai. Never expose it to light, never get it wet and never ever feed it after midnight.

Gizmo gets accidentally wet when brought home and he produces five Gremlins.

The most dominant is Stripe, who for some reason despises Gizmo. They go about rampaging the city and tearing up the place. The climax of the film takes place in a Montgomery Ward store and Gizmo lets up the blinds and this allows the light in that kills Stripe. The store owner returns to claim Gizmo claiming that the world is not ready for the Mogwai, a symbol for the over zealousness of the west to have material goods over the Christmas period per-

I N DIANA JON ES AN D TH E TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) Ok, there’s no real Christmas signs, symbolism or indeed back stories in this film but if I don’t see it at Christmas I feel it is a waste of a Christmas Day. So there, and It’s A Wonderful Life doesn’t have Indiana Jones in it….

N AT I O N A L L A M P O O N ’ S CHRISTMAS VACATION (1989) Hey, there’s that guy that used to be really funny and in great films. What’s he at now, oh yea he’s quitting his show because he’s an arse. Ladies and gentlemen I give you Chevy Chase. The cornerstone of this popular franchise and he also made Fletch. I liked it.

This is the third film in the Lampoon Series and was written by John Hughes. And it has the distinction of being my favourite one in the series.

You know the story – Clark wants to give his family the perfect Christmas. But he keeps getting obstacles placed in his

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971) This is for my money the only film to watch at Christmas.

Think about it, songs, chocolate, a warm message about family and greed is not welcomed, it is punished, all the ingredients for festive cheer.

I won’t bore you with the plot details as I’m sure you are all well aware at this stage. The film is fun, bright, sad in all the right places and leaves you walking away with a smile on your face and a warm heart.

That could also be all the chocolate though…

So there you go, a rundown of what I feel are perfect Christmas films. A very merry Christmas to you and yours!

Sincere compliments and congratulations to our Town Development Officer, Mairead Linneen, who not alone has the Presentation Arts Centre up and running but has it rocking its socks off!

In recent weeks I had the pleasure of attending a couple of drama productions which worked well at the aesthetic Centre but I had no idea what to expect of the latest venture – the launch of The Revelator Orchestra’s debut album, a collaboration with producer/musician Acko and writer Peter Murphy on Wednesday 21st November at the Nunnery Road location.

The large, diverse crowd who had gathered for the event were happy to mix and mingle and be there for the first of its kind at the venue and expectations were high contributing to the air of excitement and anticipation that pervaded the foyer.

And none were disappointed. To say it worked would be an understatement. Acko’s sound was electrifying and Peter Murphy’s performance spell binding! To add to this, The Presentation Centre brought in the local talent of audio visual engineer Keith Murphy whose imagery projected onto the backdrop of the exquisite stained glass window of the Presentation auditorium was both mesmerising and haunting – a truly amazing combination of art and creativity.

The audience were enthralled for the entire recital and the talk in the foyer afterwards was animated with everyone singing the praises of both the artistes and the venue and saying how lovely it was to have some place in Enniscorthy to come to enjoy entertainment of this calibre and diversity.

Many who had read Peter’s book John the Revelator said that they had been encouraged to revisit it and those who hadn’t said that they would certainly read it now.

CD sales went extremely well with punters vying to get signatures from the very accommodating duo and there seemed to be a reluctance on the part of all to take their leave – a sure sign of the immense enjoyment and success of the occasion.

the presentation centre – A Revelation!

Official Launch of ‘The Sounds of John the Revelator’ at The Presentation Centre, Wednesday, 21 November 2012

The debut album from the Revelator Orchestra was officially launched last month by special guest of honour Jerry Fish, on whose Mudbug Club label the album is released. A large audience was treated to an audiovisual spectacular of live music, spoken word and visual projection.

Attending on the night, Co Wexford Arts Officer, Sinéad Barden commented “That was a truly amazing night. The acoustics of County Wexford’s newest venue is extraordinary and the potential that can be achieved through visuals, sound, performance was shown on the night. Just goes to show what a dynamic space the Presentation Centre is”.

For those who didn’t make it on the night, the album is available in music stores and also on iTunes (see Maria Nolan’s review on page 9).

There was plenty of drama in the Centre in November.

A double bill of one act plays took to the stage on the 3rd and 4th November. The Rasper Players from North Wexford and the Masquerade Players from Arklow

performed 4-48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane and The Bear by Brian Friel. On the 23rd November, Camross Drama Group featured two one act plays and a short story. The audience were treated to a night of comedy and drama with Billy the Member by Des Walters, Last Tango in Little Grimley

by David Tristram and The Last Straw for Farmer Brown written by Mary Brown. The highest standard of drama was achieved by all as part of their preparation for the One-Act Drama Festival circuit currently taking place all over the country.

Not to be left out, our very own Enniscorthy Youth Theatre Ensemble took to the stage on 11th November with Hugh Dunnit, a piece written specifically for the actors aged 12 years and older by Red Moon Theatre. A convoluted comedy of colourful characters from the worlds of literature and film went down a treat with both the audience and young performers alike.

Red Moon will resume their art, drama and theatre classes at the Centre on Thursday 10 January, new members always welcome.

‘here Before’

Exhibition of paintings and print by John Busher 1-22 December - Open Tuesdays to Saturdays; 10am to 5pm.

For the exhibition, Here Before, local artist John Busher will exhibit a number of new paintings and prints that continue to explore themes of change and reinvention. He uses a number of sources to inform his work including photography, drawing and his memory. Over time by combining a number of these approaches, he allows an image to evolve, which usually captures a moment in time. Featuring prominently in his work is an economical use of colour and exaggerated forms appear through a process of inadvertent manipulation. His pieces have a strong narrative with lone figures and solitary landscapes telling the story.

John Busher was born in Enniscorthy and studied visual communications at the National College of Art and Design. Following a period of working as a commercial graphic designer, he resumed his studies to qualify with a postgraduate diploma in Art & Design Education in 2008. John has exhibited both nationally and internationally and recent shows have included Level at Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise, Gallery & Invited Artists at The Leinster Gallery, Dublin, and a solo show, Night Without Stars, at Wexford Arts Centre. Here Before is dedicated to the memory of John’s mother and all proceeds from the exhibition will go to St Anne’s Ward in St Vincent’s Hospital.

As a qualified art teacher, John, has a wish to nurture creativity and develop essential skills in young people and to this end he will be hosting two children’s art workshops in December Saturday 8 December, 2pm – 5pm Winter Wonderland Create a forest of winter trees from recycled material, wire, card and MorRoc (plaster). This will be exhibited in The Presentation Centre alongside the artist’s paintings and prints.

Saturday 15 December, 2pm – 5pm Cut-Out Christmas Learn about the history of decorations and their various national origins.

Design and make decorative cut outs using paper and card and a variety of other materials.

Workshops are for children aged 8 to 12 years. The cost for each workshop is €15 and numbers are limited so booking is advisable on 053 92 33000.

l fourth class ‘Meet the Artist’ – Bernadette Doolan with St Aidan’s National Schoo

Four classes of students were treated to a very interactive class with the local artist touching on the methods used in her painting and sculpture and the inspiration behind them. Students were given the opportunity to title some of the pieces and to reflect on the experience by drawing about it.

60 budding gardeners from first and second class in Gael Scoil Inis Corthaidh & St Aidan’s Primary School took to the grounds of the centre to plant 350 bulbs for spring including snowdrops, crocus, bulebells and tulips, daffodils and narcissi. Part of an allocation of 6,000 bulbs planted, the blooms will begin to appear in March and flower in waves into May. Enniscorthy Town Gardener said of his helpers “I hope they come back to see the bulbs when they flower to admire their work”

Transition year students from the CBS, Coláiste Bríde and Meanscoil Gharman participated in the two-day workshop initiated by Enniscorthy Town Council to benefit all town festivities held throughout the town. A Night at the Opera by Donal Cullen Last month we had a night to remember – a full programme of music and grandeur. A night of light entertainment to warm the cockles of your heart. Is there no end to the talent in Enniscorthy – an operetta of our very own!

And it is thanks to Maura Flannery who is responsible for it all, yes Ms Flannery invented this very concept of an Enniscorthy operetta which is now in its fourth year and bravo to all who partake in its grandeur on its annual outing.

Where the operetta is concerned there certainly is lots of talent and this year it delivered a high standard of glorious singing and playing. If it was variety you wanted it was here in abundance.

Oh, Lady Be Good, by George and Ira Gershwin was given its best and finest moment by The Quaid Family and the Quaids also gave Enya’s May It Be from the movie The Fellowship of the Ring a rendition which pleased the packed auditorium of the Riverside Park Hotel.

Aisling Williams took us by surprise with a voice of an angel. Her voice is sweet and soothing, she draws you into her world and makes

you feel the song.

Therese Canavan, no surprise here, raised the roof to the delight of the audience with songs from Jesus Christ Superstar and Blood Brothers. Great stuff Therese, keep it going.

Keep an eye on the Kinsella sisters – their future looks bright.

My special treat was Anne Marie Kearney who can play flute, guitar and sing, but above all, please any audience of good taste who enjoy easy listening. Ann Marie gave us Suite de Trois Morceaux, Movements 1 and 2 (Godard).

Oliver Merrigan, a renowned tenor, did a great job on Santa Lucia at the end of a spectacular evening.

A splendid time was had by one and all. Well done, bravo.

The night ended with the Duffry Stompers keeping everybody up dancing to the wee small hours.

A very special word of thanks to the one and only Yvonne Collier who accompanied everyone. May I say Mozart or Liszt would have been proud of Yvonne – good on you girl!

The evening was in aid of the Athenaeum and its restoration. The grand old building of the town, and its legacy in Irish history, will certainly be smiling with the likes of the operetta in its corner.

Christmas in St. Aidan’s Cathedral

In the run up to Christmas why not set aside one night to soak in the music of the season. A fantastic line-up of artists will entertain all those who go along to the Cathedral on Friday 14th of December at 8pm. Tickets are €10 available from the Parish Office and from Parish Promoters.

Soloists Tomás Whelan, Róisín Dempsey, Lorna Mahon, Stephen Murphy and Ted Quinn will be joined by the Enniscorthy Choral Union, the Silver Tones, St. Aidan’s Children’s Choir plus the combined Cathedral choirs leading the audience in singing our Christmas favourites.

The concert is the first of a series of fundraisers aimed at the proposed Organ Restoration in St. Aidan’s. An estimated €40,000 will be needed over the next four years to bring the organ to the quality and standard needed to support the fantastic church music in the Cathedral.

The upcoming concert on Friday 14th December will be a special event which everybody will enjoy. n

It's Panto time once again in Rathnure as the Panto Society are in preparation to bring all the madness and craic to the stage.

Producers John Reilly and Liam Sharkey are putting the finishing touches to their 12th original script called Sulky-Ella and the Highland Adventure. The story kicks off some years after the original Cinderella story.

Queen Cinderella and King Charming now have two children, one nice, and one not so nice. Sulkyella lives up to her name, and in order to try and help her to be a proper princess, The King and Queen decide that she should be the next heir to the throne over her older sister. Being the kind girl that she is, Rosella agrees with this. Sulkyella however, has different ideas. She is sent to a different land to learn how to be a proper princess, and meets a whole array of characters along the way which leads her on an adventure to Scotland and so the mayhem begins. However, something sinister is happening in the background.... Who is the old hag that has turned the kind Rosella evil? Will The McCracken Clan save the day? Will Sulkyella ever stop...well.....sulking??

Enniscorthy Castle’s Christmas experience is themed on a nostalgic Victorian Christmas with the interior of the building dressed in vintage style decorations to remind people of memories past. The reception area of the Castle has been transformed into a Victorian shopfront and visitors have the opportunity to purchase old fashioned confectionary. For a nominal fee children

can post letters to Santa through a magically designed letter box at the Castle and receive a unique individual response through the post.

Enniscorthy Castle is devoting one of the downstairs rooms to a toy museum themed on Santa’s workshop. Visitors can spend as much time as desired in this toy museum.

Extravaganza of Christmas Cheer A wonderful eclectic blend of entrepreneurism, local enterprise and home grown enthusiasm gathered together at the riverside Park Hotel on Tuesday 20th november for the Enniscorthy Lions Club annual Wine and Cheese fundraiser.

Showcasing jewellery, confectionery, wine, home baking, hats, candles, flowers and more, this colourful, vibrant event, the brainchild of the local Lions Club who are to be commended for creating awareness and interest in local businesses and craft people and what they have to offer.

The fabulous displays and diversity of exhibitors made it both an appealing and worthwhile evening giving the large attendance much to think about and choose from leading into the Christmas frenzy.

The festive fairy lit interior of the Riverside Hotel did much to contribute to the overall splendour and opulence of the occasion as the presence of The O`Duffy Cup and our 3 in a row All Ireland Camogie Champions contributed to that

uplifting feeling and feel good factor that permeated throughout the evening. The choice of our All Ireland Champions as recipients of all proceeds made on the night linked success with success and winning with winning – a most worthy and excellent concept in the present climate and one that the Lions Club are to be applauded for.

The praise from the punters was flowery and forthcoming as they sampled titbits from Pettitts and Supervalu, admired Flowers By Grace, tried on fascinators and aprons by Alice J.Kelly, hats and scarves by

Helen D`Eathe, savoured wines from Donohoes, wholesome brown bread from Ballyminane Mills, and delicious cakes from Blossom Bakes and Creative Toppers, and ogled the exquisite jewellery and beautifully perfumed candles from a wide variety of Exhibitors. Conor Morris and Lauren Reville Byrne students from FCJ Bunclody displayed prepacked baking products from their mini company and Jenny Crean displayed her delicate coloured glass mirrors, clocks, and frames. There were several collections of paintings by different and affordable artists and the Camogie girls themselves proved that they can do much more than hurl with their assortments of handmade knits and crocheted items.

A thoroughly enjoyable, pleasant and inspiring experience leaving one with the feeling that all is not doom and gloom in Enniscorthy – there is a lot happening locally and my compliments to the Chairman and members of the Lions Club for affording us this affable opportunity to view it.

100 Years of S’corthy

I was privileged recently to receive an invitation to Enniscorthy rugby Club for the Launch of their Centenary Book. A comprehensive, informative, attractive, glossy, picture packed publication detailing the history of the Club from its inception in 1912 through to today.

Compiled by the meticulous Ger Moynihan the edifying volume is an extensive, wide rang-

ing record of the birth, growth and development of rugby in the town through the decades and is a tribute to all who made it possible.

Launching the book RTE’s Tom McGurk said that it was an uplifting experience for him to come to Enniscorthy and see rugby in its natural environment. He said it brought him back to his own rugby days when the sport was all about

club, family, friends and community and had nothing to do with money. He said that he had become disillusioned with the way the rugby world was going at the present time and he was heartened to see that Enniscorthy was still holding fast to old values and the original ethos of the game. He thanked Enniscorthy Rugby Club for inviting him and he wished them every success with the publication and on the field.

Chairman Rory Fanning and President Tom Hastings acknowledged the trojan work of all those involved in producing this exceptional club chronicle, saying that it would be there for posterity and encouraging all to buy early as there were only a limited number printed.

I had already secured my copy to have as a treasured keepsake despite being introduced facetiously to Tom McGurk as ‘the Opposition’ by Paul McCrea adding ‘She’s the Secretary of the local GAA Club you know’… meant in the best possible taste of course as relations between our two clubs have always been excellent with both of us fishing in the main from the same pool of players.

But I had other, more personal,

reasons for purchasing this prized rugby record.

My late brother-in-law Michael Foley was a member of the successful 1989 team which won the Provincial Towns Cup and in the book his long time friend and associate Paul McCrea recalls how he, along with another Starlights teammate, since passed, Michael Farrell, made a most significant contribution to the outcome of the final and I quote: “His courageous tackle on Niall Rigney under the Enniscorthy posts saved a certain match winning try and turned the game in Enniscorthy’s favour.

Those same courageous qualities he was to show again in his long battle with terminal illness, making recovery after recovery. What a warrior and leader on both hurling and rugby fields and indeed in life itself`.

My sincere thanks Paul for those lovely words and cherished memory.

Another man remembered fondly among these poignant pages is my late father-in-law – the great Jamsie Nolan of Bellefield Lawn, who is heralded as ‘a sporting legend’ by his long-time friend and colleague David Hasslacher.

David recounts how Jamsie was part of the 3 in a row Starlights team winning county titles in 1927, ‘28, and ‘29. He played gaelic football with Wexford in Croke Park, rugby for Enniscorthy in Lansdowne Road and soccer with Bohemians in Dalymount Park… all while the GAA ban was at its height!

And not alone that, he has the unique distinction of scoring in each of the three Meccas – Croke Park, Lansdowne Road and Dalymount Park. Soccer International Niall Quinn almost equalled that record playing minor hurling for Dublin in Croker and playing in both Lansdowne and Dalymount – but he played soccer in both.

Jamsie to our knowledge is the only one who has played the three codes proper in their own stadiums. He went on to spend some time in England playing soccer with West Ham and managed to squeeze in a spot of cricket for Enniscorthy as well.

An outstanding sporting career for a quiet, unassuming man who spoke little of his amazing accomplishments and I would like to say a most sincere thank you to David on behalf of his family for hon-

ouring him and his marvellous achievements in this book.

The 172 pages are packed with wonderful contributions, tales of past glories, old friends honoured and remembered, today`s stars acknowledged and admired and high hopes and aspirations for the club`s future and at €20 is a most excellent buy, a first rate read and a definite stocking filler this Christmas!

Friends of St John’s The Annual General Meeting of The Friends of St. John’s Hospital was held recently in St. John’s Hospital.

In a wide-ranging address, the Chairperson, Lulu Hiney, said that the highlight of the year was the opening of the Alzheimer’s Garden by Mary McKay of the Active Retirement Group.

It is a beautiful garden and great credit is due to Lilian McKenna for all her work she did in acquiring shrubs, trees and getting people to create the tranquil garden that will be a haven for fragile people with memory difficulties.

Alzheimer Society benefit from ‘Thriller’ Rosaleen Casey and Paul Robinson would like to extend a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported their recent Halloween ‘Thriller’ fundraiser in aid of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Wexford Branch, which raised a staggering €2,736. All money raised in Co. Wexford is used for services in Co. Wexford.

The two organisers would like to pass on a special word of thanks to Hogan Print, Enniscorthy, The Bailey, Enniscorthy for the venue, John Carroll the DJ for his services on the night, the gang from Pettitt’s SuperValu, Enniscorthy, and finally all those who generously gave door prizes and raffle prizes.

Voluntary groups take note…

The 2013 Enniscorthy Calendar was officially launched on Thursday, 22nd November by Jimmy Gahan in the 1798 Centre. The creation of the Calendar is the combined work of Eamonn Doyle and Basia Dunio and is a colourful presentation of magnificent photographs by Ms. Dunio and aptly worded observations and comments relevant to each month compiled by Eamonn Doyle. He also wrote a special poem for the calendar which is the new anthem of Enniscorthy.

Sean Doyle presided at the function and welcomed all present and in the course of a short address said that the Calendar that is being launched tonight encapsulates in an exciting and impressive manner all that is striking about our attractive town. It is a document that can be sent to our relatives and friends in far-off lands or indeed to anyone anywhere and it will convey in word and picture what a beautiful and historic town we live in. The photographs are among the best I have seen of the town and I now call on Basia Dunio to stand up and take a bow (Basia shyly responded to much applause) – you can be proud of your talent and achievement which captures the intrinsic quality of Enniscorthy.

pleasure to be present at the launch of such a prestigious creation and after perusing it he could see it was a very professional presentation with stunning photographs and very interesting text. Both people who produced the calendar certainly had the interest of Enniscorthy at heart and as Chairman of the Town Council and on behalf of the people of the town he thanked them for their talent and inspiration.

In launching the Calendar, Jimmy Gahan, said: “The pictures depicted serve as a great reminder of home to emigrants from Enniscorthy now living abroad. It will make an ideal Christmas gift and would be seen as such by those receiving and giving.”

He singled out the photographs of Basia Dunio and

said she had managed to capture the beauty of Enniscorthy in her own unique style which added not only to the beauty of the town but also to the character of the finished product.

He also singled out Eamonn Doyle who came up with the concept of a calendar and succeeded in bringing his idea to fruition. He praised Mr. Doyle for his commitment to the community in which he lives and said he was following in a wonderful family tradition in giving himself to the promotion of Enniscorthy.

His mother is a long time servant of community related activities in St. Senan’s Parish while his father, Seán Óg Ó’Dubhghaill, served Enniscorthy and County Wexford as a public represen-

tative of long standing. The Doyle family had been neighbours of his since his childhood and he felt honoured, pleased and proud to launch the Calendar for and on behalf of Eamonn Doyle.

Eamonn Doyle concluded by thanking the Staff of the’98 C e n t re , To w n C l e r k a n d Members of Enniscorthy Town Council, Chamber of Commerce, all the speakers, Joe Hogan and all at Hogan Print, his brilliant designer and photographer, Basia Dunio, and all present for turning up on the night.

Enniscorthy Castle: always in the news…

Enniscorthy Castle have been announced as winners of the Chambers Ireland, Excellence in Local Government award in the Supporting Tourism category at an awards ceremony in Dublin last night (November 8 2012).

The award profiles the excellent work undertaken by local authorities on behalf of Chambers Ireland in the past year, and Enniscorthy Castle and Enniscorthy Town Council were nominated by Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce, shortlisted for the awards and announced the overall recipient at the prestigious event.

Competition in the awards category was notable and also shortlisted were the Geopark Ambassadors Project, Cavan; Carlow County Museum, Carlow; and the Donegal Gathering, Donegal, with Enniscorthy Castle scooping the title.

Enniscorthy Castle's very first art exhibition, "Elements", will be launched on Friday December 7th. Artworks on display date from 1767 right up to the present day, and form part of the collections main‘Flame’ by Nigel Rolfe tained by the Office of Public Works and the Department of Finance and Personnel, Northern Ireland. The exhibition runs until January 13th, so be sure to go along and enjoy this unique opportunity to view art that belongs to us all.

A nostalgic Victorian Christmas experience is on offer in Enniscorthy Castle. The interior of the building has been decorated in vintage style decorations and Santa himself is upstairs offering the opportunity for children to visit him and receive a present. Transition Year Talent & Temptations

The Transition Year students from Enniscorthy Town showed us their creative talent on Saturday 1st December. The Town’s Christmas Pageant was a brilliant show of local community effort … those HUGE puppet characters were created, made and performed by Transition Year students from Colaiste Bride, St Mary’s CBS, and Meanscoil Gharman. What a spectacle!!!

SINN FÉIN JOB CREATION PLAN Sinn Féin recently launched their Job Creation Plan in New Ross. According to County Chairperson Oisin O’Connell: “Sinn Féin is proposing almost €13 billion additional investment in job creation and economic growth over the next four years. This would create an average of 156,000 new jobs and retain up to 15,000 existing jobs according to the ERSI… Among the proposals contained in our jobs plan is the revival of the Irish Sugar Beet Industry through the construction of a new bio-refinery plant in New Ross. This would create 5,000 jobs. We also propose €2.5 billion investment in the roll out of next generation broadband and sequence investment in water infrastructure. Currently 43% of water is wasted through leaks… The development and full utilisation of Rosslare Europort… Such investment in the port could also lead to the reopening of the Rosslare to Waterford Rail Line and the construction of a new rail cargo depot in the port. In each issue the Moyne Veterinary Clinic deals with various issues relating to pets. This month, they look at the topical issue of getting a pet for Christmas.

A dog is for life, not just for Christmas

every year this subject comes up – receiving a dog for Christmas. If you are thinking of getting a dog there are some vital points that you'll need to consider. the most obvious one is that puppies grow! every January the dog wardens and IsPCa are inundated with dogs just abandoned, thrown out because they have outgrown their puppy cuteness and are more frisky, boisterous and stronger. the Christmas cheer fades into the memory banks when you've to clean up after your puppies' no. 1 & 2's!! then there are the exercise walks, training them on a lead, house training, socialising them with other dogs and also regular flea and worm treatments, vaccinations etc.

If you still decide you'd like to get a puppy for Christmas then the breed needs to suit your situation. there is no point in getting a st. Bernard if you live in an apartment. Big and giant breeds of dogs, eg st. Bernard, need space to run so as to help their development. small breed of dogs, toy breeds, eg Yorkshire terrier, are excellent house dogs.

King Charles Cavaliers are extremely gentle, very sociable and will blend in to a household of young and old seamlessly. labrador dogs are very cute as puppies but grow quickly and need lots of exercise and good nutrition. they are wonderful family pets, are loyal, gentle and just the business with kids but they need space to run around to develop good bone structure. springer spaniels are very gentle too but have an engine in them like a Ferrari! they want to go, go, go so be prepared for lots of outdoor activities if you want a springer! terriers in general are great characters but sometimes are not the friendliest with small kids so if you've small kids in the house just factor this in before making a decision.

In brief if you've a small confined space go for a small dog. If you're thinking of getting a present for a loved one it's very important to consult them first as it may not be what they were looking for, and now nobody is happy, especially the dog!

If choosing a big breed they will need much more exercise and food and can be a handful to have on a lead so you need to be in the "full of your health" for some of the big breeds like Boxers, German shepherds, rottweilers etc. also the cost of feeding them is a critical factor in your decision. a good plane of nutrition is essential to their health and wellbeing and must be considered too. also it is essential that the puppy has a proper vaccination programme with at least 2 separate vaccinations to protect him against potentially fatal diseases. a full health check is important at this time when you take him to the vet, to pick up on any possible issues early on and treat them properly so that your pet can enjoy a full and

healthy life with you.

Local firm C&R Print has supported the Irish Dogs for the Disabled charity by sponsoring the printing of their 2013 calendar.

Irish Dogs for the Disabled is a unique charity founded in 2007 to service a need that previously was not being met in Ireland. They are comprised mainly of volunteers and receive no government funding to provide this service.

Assistance dogs are specially trained to assist physically disabled children and adults to carry out a range of practical tasks in order to achieve greater independence. Every dog is trained to help with simple

everyday tasks such as opening/closing doors, picking up dropped items, emptying the washing machine, sending for help or even helping a child with severe walking difficulties to walk with greater ease and balance plus much more. Each dog is trained to cater for the needs of the specific individual to enable them to live life with greater independence.

The 2013 calendar is a beautiful collection of pictures of the assistance dogs and puppies.

These amazing dogs make a life changing difference to disabled adults and children by helping them with tasks that so many of us take for granted.

Christmas in Enniscorthy The outgoing year has been a difficult one for a lot of people for one reason or another. The economic situation has caused problems for the vast majority of the re s i d e n t s o f t h i s i s l a n d .

Enniscorthy has not escaped the effects of the downturn and all around us we can see the results of this. However we are now entering the time of year when despite difficult circumstances people will try to step out and do their best for their families and friends. Hard earned money will be spent and hopefully as many people as possible will spend the few spare euro at home in Enniscorthy. This will help the local economy and local business which in turn will maintain local employment.

This is a two way street, however, with the onus on local business to provide the general public with the same value and facilities as they would expect to find elsewhere. Citizens of Enniscorthy and surrounding areas are entitled to the same

prices and opening hours etc. as they will get in surrounding towns. If everyone plays their part , within the current economic restrictions, the next few weeks should give us all the lift we badly need.

Budget 2013 This column is going to press before the unveiling of the Budget.Therefore I am unaware of the details to be announced.

I can predict , however, that for the majority of us the Ministers revelations will sting in some way or other. One of the side effects of this is that in times when budgets contain more bad news than the opposite, they have a depressing effect on everyday spending within the economy . Coming as it does 20 days before Christmas we can be fairly certain that it will do nothing to help the seasonal spend throughout the country.

This is unfortunate but could be avoided if the Government went back to the old system of introducing the budget in March

This would help in a number of ways as it would allow the changes to bed down before the end of each year and would take away the gloom and apprehension in the month of Christmas. I fully recognise that the long term effect would be the same but at least it would give

us a December free of these gloomy economic debates that we have all tired of.

Eddie Breen E d d i e B re e n , a n a t i v e o f Enniscorthy ,will step down shortly as Wexford County Manager. Eddie , by all accounts,

has carried out his functions with efficiency and courtesy throughout his public service which travelled from the first level of the service to County Manager of his own county. I wish him well in his retirement.

Ironically Eddie may be the last County Manager in Wexford, as under the proposed changes to local government, the position will be abolished to be replaced by a Chief Executive Officer.

History will then show that the first Wexford County Manager the late T.D. Sinnott was a Wexfordman and the last County Manager also a Wexfordman.

In between we had T.F. Broe from Co. Clare, Noel Dillon from Cork and Seamus Dooley also from Co. Clare. A varied lot with different personalities and different goals, but in the round Co.Wexford has been very lucky with the calibre of top public servants. Thankfully Noel Dillon, Seamus Dooley and of course Eddie Breen are still with us and hopefully all will enjoy long and happy retirements.

Happy Christmas to all As we leave this year may I wish a happy Christmas and a pleasant New Year to the readers of this column. I sincerely hope that all will enjoy the festive season without resorting to extremes of over indulgence in alcohol or worse. It is important to remember that we can have a brilliant time without being a nuisance to ourselves , family or neighbours.

Also if we take to the roads lets be careful and keep our speed within safety limits and have due regard for other road users. Try and remember the less fortunate also and if we can discreetly help in any way lets do so.

Finally a big thanks to all those who will be out helping others, whether by way of direct action or participating in musical or other groups visiting hospitals etc.. And most important of all lets make sure that come 2013 we are all still around to see what the future will hold. n

HOOK LIGHTHOUSE

Following last year’s successful event, Caim Youth Club are hosting a Live Nativity on Sunday December 9th after 11am mass.

The story of the nativity will be narrated and acted out by members of Caim Youth Club. It will begin in the church straight after mass, and then moves to the 'stable' behind the hall where some live animals will also be in attendance. This will be followed by a Christmas fair in the hall selling homemade produce as well as some Christmas products. All money raised goes towards the very successful annual senior citizens party which is also hosted by the youth club. n

New Facilities Open at World Famous 800 Year Old Lighthouse…

The reputation of Hook Lighthouse by Lonely Planet as the world’s flashiest lighthouse is to be significantly enhanced by a major investment and the recent opening of new facilities at the 800-year-old lighthouse. €150,000 was invested in a number of projects at the world's oldest intact operational Lighthouse on the Hook Peninsula in county Wexford including restoring the cobbled yard area and adding to this area a raised viewing gantry and an outdoor performance area free for use to community groups. Repairs to the 1860's Lighthouse Keeper houses on the site, and the addition of a dedicated area displaying Coast Guard and Whale and dolphin exhibitions and items of local nautical interest.

The world famous lighthouse at Hook Head has been open to the public for the last 10 years and further information on the site can be found on visitwexford.ie and hookheritage.ie n

FERNS DIOCESE …

The Bishop of Ferns Dr. Denis Brennan has expressed his gratitude to those who participated in the National Board audit, carried out in the diocese of Ferns, last month.

The auditors, appointed by the National Board, consulted with diocesan files and met with diocesan personnel, safeguarding children personnel and parish volunteers, support people and with members of the statutory authorities (Garda and HSE of Inter Agency).

The exercise will result in a report from the National Board which will include findings and recommendations.

The audit was occasioned by an invitation from Bishop Brennan. The report will offer the diocese another opportunity to discern current practices and policies and assist in charting the future path.

The Bishop expresses his gratitude to the diocesan advisory panel, the safeguarding children commit-

tee, the Inter Agency group, the National Office and the Holy See for their ongoing advice and assistance.

Gratitude is also expressed to the 91 parish safeguarding representatives and to the many lay people, religious and priests who have attended safeguarding seminars / information sessions over the past 10 years.

First Round of Cup: a Nail-Biting Battle Enniscorthy 1 -vs- Gorey 1 The Enniscorthy camp was at a loss to explain their side’s defeat to local rivals, Gorey, last month.The home side had already clashed with Gorey in an early league encounter and came out with an impressive victory but on this occasion the underdog’s hunger for revenge clearly showed in the outcome.

The intensity of the game never faltered as both teams battled it out for local bragging rights. However, twenty minutes into the game, a well placed Gorey ball proved detrimental as Gorey’s Valerie Power snatched at the opportunity to fire home the games’ only goal.

Jessica Flood and Jane Peppard were instrumental in turning the tables on the Gorey attack on numerous occasions, providing impressive interceptions and changing the direction of play. Subsequently, Enniscorthy’s offensive players, Frayne, Nolan and Martin, threatened with numerous jaw-

dropping counter attacks only to be denied at the last hurdle.

In spite of enjoying equal possession, Enniscorthy failed to register an effort on target.

Their first short corner was floundered, whilst the second went marginally wide and the t h i rd w a s i n t e rc e p t e d .

Enniscorthy will undoubtedly harbour regrets about the one that got away but all players are to be commended for their passionate performances.

Enniscorthy would like to thank those who supported on the day, despite the miserable conditions, and would also like to wish Gorey the very best of luck in the next leg of their cup campaign.

Gathering Calendar of Events Wexford was quick off the mark last month being the first county to unveil their official calendar of events for the Gathering ireland 2013.

The 2013 year of Gathering festivals and events kicks off in Wexford with a major Chess event in Gorey, followed by many ancestry family clan gatherings and the poignant re-enactment of the Battle of Vinegar Hill will also take place and the county are calling on Ireland and beyond for Pikemen and Redcoats to

return to the Hill for a historic moment.

The memory of Wexford man Commodore John Barry known as 'The Father of the American Navy' will be honoured in his hometown in Wexford town and in New Ross the memory of President John F. Kennedy will be honoured and remembered during a series of events for the JFK50.

Krisskindlemarket – just the thing it was almost Christmas. The weather in ireland was mild and terribly unseasonal. We longed for that Ho! Ho! Ho! feeling to fill us full of Christmas cheer. Being of a certain vintage – Lapland wasn’t the answer. So we decided to browse that old reliable – the Ryanair website – and agreed that a short trip to a Christmas market was just the thing.

Friedrichshafen – in Southern Germany was the preferred choice. It had that kind of magical jingle bell sound to it – conjuring up quaint little Disney style castles nestled among tall snow capped pines and the aroma of mulled wine and spices wafting around the parapets and antler clad reindeer strutting on the front lawn. And besides the German Markets were reputed to be the best and Ryanair flew directly into Friedrichshafen – a definite plus.

From the point of view of fairytale castles Friedrichshafen didn’t quiet make it. What we didn’t know about the place was its history – and in the scheme of things that is always important!

Friedrichshafen is the home of the Zeppelin. The famous airship developed by Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin and its

first flight on 2nd July 1900 turned Friedrichshafen into a town of major significance from a business and technological perspective with International Companies such as MTU and Donier setting up base there.

Unfortunately, for us it also made Friedrichshafen one of the main German targets for Allied bombardment during World War 11, resulting in almost total sacking of the town. Today it is a modern industrial German town on the shores of Lake Constance and as such is quiet nice but not the Christmas Card town that Silent Night dreams are made of.

We were very fortunate however, to have booked into the Goldener Hirsch Hotel – a most

central location on Charlottenstrasse whose Proprietor – a Her Eckhard Rinner – is a most affable and entertaining man who went to great lengths to explain all about Friedrichshafen and to suggest other places in the hinterland that we might visit for atmosphere and beauty.

If you do ever feel like going to Friedrichshafen – you would do a lot worse than staying in the Goldener Hirsch – it is a small homely hotel with a good dinitrogen, friendly staff, an informative and helpful Proprietor, a snug little bar and at €80 per night per double room – great value.

The Market in

Friedrichshafen had been rather small and to tell the truth more than a little disappointing so Her Rinner recommended that we head north to Ulm to savour the delights of a more authentic Krisskindlemarket. At €4 per head return on the train it was worth a look and indeed this time there was no disappointment.

Nestled in the shadow of the tallest Cathedral in Germany the Ulm Krisskindlemarket is as close as you will come to that childlike Lapland feeling. The aroma of mulled wine, the sound of sizzling sausages, the kaleidoscope of colour that is a German Christmas Market assaults the senses and you cant wait to get your hands around one of those steaming mugs and taste some of the delectable delights on offer.

The Germans just love their Christmas and everything that goes with it – the multitude of Stalls are an eclectic mix of every conceivable bauble, trinket, and decoration ever associated with that wonderful Yuletide Feast.

Indeed the Christmas tree seems to take pride of place over all. Seeing fathers and mothers and even grandfathers and grandmothers taking children to buy their first ever decora-

tion for the Christmas tree causes a kinda warm glow in your innards that produces that Ahhh sound as you see whole families mull over this extremely important first purchase.

These intricate, lovingly made items are kept from year to year and a Christmas tree might well be adorned with decorations from your entire family tree – with perhaps the first piece your greatgrandfather bought right down to your first contribution.

A rather nice, sentimental tradition don’t you think?

If you are not a fan of Christmas and all the glitter and glitz that goes with it then a Krisskindlemarkt is not the place for you. There is nothing else to buy at the stalls and there is nothing else to do but to devour the great sausages or imbibe the steaming brews at minus 5 degrees.

But ………then………..if there is even a wee bit of the child that was - still lurking beneath that mature, adult surface you will be transported back to that magical time when Santa was as real as the Bogey Man or the Man in the Moon or the Tooth Fairy and you will be swept into the festive wonderland by the vibrant berry colours, the spicy, cinnamon smells, the sentimental jingle sounds, the nostalgic, memory provoking aromas, and you will find yourself gazing wistfully s k y w a rd m o re than once……………….. just in case … … … . Ye s j u s t i n c a s e …………you might actually catch a glimpse of - that big fat man with the long white beard being whisked across the early evening moon by a herd of red nosed Reindeer.

From sweeping up hair in her father’s salon to the mean streets of Dublin’s gangland Wexford born actress Charlie murphy, who plays Siobhan in RTE’s hit drama Love/Hate, is the daughter of the proprietor of the famous Scissors Empire in Wexford town – Pat murphy.

Love/Hate tells the story of a fictitious criminal gang in Dublin which are into drug smuggling, prostitution and gangland killings.

Charlie’s boyfriend Tommy is one of Nidge’s henchmen.

Siobhan has to deal with a lot and put up with a lot of Tommy’s goings on but she definitely pulls no punches and is quick to tell Tommy off at times.

So far in this series Siobhan

has been violently raped by an IRA hardman Git only to be saved by her boyfriend Tommy who kicked the Git to death in the opening episode and left Darren to finish him off by smashing his head with a keg of Heineken.

In last week’s RTE Guide the three main gangster molls or girlfriends were interviewed.

Charlie Murphy admitted she has been stretched to the limit speaking about the graphic and disturbing nature of the attack scene. The Wexford born actress said: “I was looked after while we were filming it. Even before that, I had a meeting with the Rape Crisis Centre, they were phenomenal, really amazing.� “It was very conversational, very human what we talked about. Everyone on board made sure it was done well, it’s such a heavy subject matter that you don’t want to go and just do it like it’s another day’s work. It has an effect on people who are watching.�

Charlie would have spent some of her teens in Enniscorthy helping her dad in the shop but as she grew older she attended the Gaiety School of Acting.

She is a very talented young actress and I am sure she is inundated with scripts. Apart from playing Siobhan in Love/Hate Charlie is very soon going to be seen in the new series of Misfits.

Enniscorthy’s first ever Christmas pageant on 1st December was a great success with a big parade of Disney characters, Santa, the Strawberry Queen, etc.

This pageant was the brainchild of Annie Gilpin to help raise funds for the Strawberry Fair for next year. There was a great Christmas atmosphere in the air as DJ Liam Sharkey spinned his Christmas cds like Fairytale of New York etc. Santa stopped and got his photo taken with every boy and girl in Enniscorthy – the poor man had hardly time to breathe.

He was inundated with children giving him their Santa lists – some were ten miles long. I’d say Santa must have been glad to get home and have some nice cocoa and a good night’s sleep before he gets to do a stint in his grotto in Enniscorthy Castle this week.

Poor Santa even fell out of the horse and carriage at the start of the day – it must have been very icy in the North Pole that morning.

Wexford sporting heroes launch Hope & Dream 2013 road race

On a wintry Friday night in November, at the historic 1798 Centre in Enniscorthy, Team ireland Head Boxing Coach, Billy Walsh with the assistance of Olympian adam Nolan and the past four victorious Wexford Camogie Captains, officially launched the Hope and Dream 10.

Masterful, world renowned coach, Billy Walsh emotionally addressed the intimate gathering of dignitaries and press pledging his support for the Hope and Dream 10. He sincerely attributed immense praise to the organisers, participants and volunteers of the event.

Walsh acknowledged the selflessness of the aforementioned

and their use of their most valuable ‘commodities’, namely ‘their time and money’ whilst classifying them ‘as the real heroes’. In a closing remark, Billy Walsh genuinely urged ‘everyone with running shoes in Wexford and surrounding counties, to get training help and support this worthwhile event’.

is a ten mile charity road race designed to appeal to both walkers and joggers. The race takes place in Enniscorthy, on the 24th of March 2013. 100% of the money raised goes directly to the two assigned charities, The Share a Dream Foundation and Hope Cancer Support Centre.

10 mile road race last year exceeded all goals. Over â‚Ź128,000 was raised by 1,000 participants. The two benefitting charities each received a cheque in excess of â‚Ź64,000.

In 2013 the goal is to raise a staggering â‚Ź150,000 for the two charities by getting 1,500 people to participate each raising â‚Ź100. All money raised by

participants will be passed on in its entirety to the charities.

No race costs will be deducted from this money. No organiser or volunteer is paid.

The Presentation presents…

Rasper Players North Wexford who performed 4.48 Psychosis

On Sunday 4th November the Rasper Players – a theatre group from North Wexford staged the production 4.48 psychosis at our wonderful Presentation arts Centre on Nunnery Road.

This dark and deeply disturbing one act play was an extremely brave choice for this excellent band of talented entertainers. The wrenching work comes with a warning and was written by the late Sarah Kane, who tragically took her own life prior to the initial performance.

The desolation, despair, energy and anguish of the troubled mind is expertly executed

by the Rasper Troupe as they deal with the issues of the piece – depression, medication, the desires of the depressed mind, self-harm and suicide.

A sad and most heart rendering work it cannot be said that this was a nice night’s entertainment but it certainly was poignant, thought provoking, emotive, frightening and in part agonising, definitely not a work that you would recommend to everyone but it is tremendously well done and I would certainly commend the Rasper Players and their producer Stephen Acton on their courageous decision to

Masquerade Players from Arklow who performed The Bear

take it on the 2012 One Act Festival Circuit and wish them every success with it. It is without doubt – drama.

The second production on the night was Brian Friel’s the Bear. This amusing tale of love and betrayal exceptionally well portrayed by the masquerade Players from arklow is from Friel’s Russian period where he was fascinated by the works of Russian Writer anton Chekhov and did several adaptations of his works.

The Bear brings together the widowed man hating Elena and the boorish, womaniser Gregory in a satirical romance

all observed by the comic man servant Luka.

The set and costumes are wonderfully authentic and the acting is of a very high standard and should do well on the festival circuit.

The Presentation Centre is a pleasant, intimate Performing Arts venue and it is so gratifying to once again have something of this nature on our doorsteps in Enniscorthy and I would encourage, indeed plead with everyone in town to support it as often as they can thereby ensuring it`s viability, sustainability and endurance.

Equine art The Irish Horse Welfare Trust (IHWT) – Ireland’s leading equine charity based in Woodenbridge, Co. Wicklow, has received a wonderful donation from their long time supporter, Irish artist Tony O’Connor of Whitetree Studio. The canvas is an original piece titled “It’s beginning to look a lot like …. “which he commissioned as a fundraiser to help the IHWT. This unique piece of impressive artwork is captured on canvas 40”x 30”.

Art in the Castle

Enniscorthy Castle is delighted to announce initial details of its forthcoming art exhibition, “Elements”.

This is a joint venture between the Department of Finance and Personnel (Northern ireland) and the Office of Public Works, and this is the first time this prestigious collection has visited Enniscorthy.

Alternating between North and South, the exhibition focuses on the four elements – earth, air, fire and water.

Each features as the subject matter or as a source of inspiration, with artworks from 1767 up to 2011 on display. Irish artists of the last fifty years feature prominently among the paintings and sculptures.

The exhibition will be launched at EnniscorthyCastle on December 7th, and will say farewell to the town in mid January 2013. Admission to “Elements” is free of charge.

A Scalder and a Hun

Those who turned out in the chill of a November evening to Enniscorthy Library to hear Wexford’s Billy Roche and home grown Paddy kehoe deliver an entertaining ensemble of poetry and prose were treated to a wonderful journey from the 1960’s damp, dark back streets of Wexford town to the lighter, brighter calles and avendidas of 1970s Barcelona as poet and writer eloquently recalled golden memories.

Scalder Paddy Kehoe delighted the audience with his love affair with Barcelona saying that he is inexplicably drawn back to it again and again in his mind’s eye despite the fact that he spent only two years in the city. The almost compulsive attraction is difficult to comprehend but none the less real and evidenced in his poetry – perhaps it’s his youth that Paddy keeps returning to and not the Spanish metropolis at all.

For those of you unaware a Scalder is a somewhat derogatory term used by those living in Wexford town to describe those living in Enniscorthy town and of course everyone knows ‘A Hun’ is someone from Wexford town who begins almost every sentence with ‘Eh Hun’ or ‘Howya Hun’.

Billy Roche’s plays and novels are a saga of Huns – indeed could be described as ‘A Complete Study of The Hun from 1960 Onwards’ – now

Billy’s works are hugely entertaining and delivered by the man himself an extra special delight. This man is an all round performer – he breathes life into his characters and as he reads you can see them walking along the Quay and through the Wexford streets and going in and out of Nolan’s Café on the corner.

Musician, songwriter, author, poet, actor, GAA fanatic and one hell of a nice guy it is always a pleasure to hear and speak with Billy Roche and we are indeed blessed to call him one of our own.

Billy treated the Library audience to a sample of his latest novel – not sure what it’s going to be called yet – Billy kinda favours something like ‘Striking a lone Note’ whilst his publisher wants him to go with something a little less long like ‘Duty’.

I guess we will have to wait to see who wins out.

A most enjoyable occasion and well done to Jarlath Glynn and Enniscorthy Library for organising the event which Jarlath tells us is only one of many to be held in the Library in the New Year.

We look forward to your 2013 Programme Jarlath and congratulate you for allowing us to celebrate and enjoy our many talented Wexford writers.

Our most sincere thanks to all who supported our annual Race Night at Bellefield Gaa Complex on Friday 23rd Nov and made it a most successful event. it was tally ho all the way and with money still coming in we would hope to clear a profit of approximately €11,000 a testament to your generosity and to our hard working Race Committee - John Browne, kathleen miller, Brian Hogan and Tomas mcVeigh and all our players for their trojan efforts selling Race Cards.

A wonderful club fundraiser with over 100 sponsors and hundreds of horses sold this project allows us to continue to nurture and promote hurling, football, camogie and ladies football at Rapparees/Starlights and all proceeds will go directly to the development of all our teams in 2013.

This yearly venture not only brings in much needed funds to the club coiffeurs it is also a most enjoyable club get together greatly enhanced by the humour and special brand of wit of the indomitable Liam Spratt.

Climbing Mountains in our Minds

Shining a Light on the World of St. Senan’s Hospital, Enniscorthy, County Wexford Climbing mountains in our minds, a new collection of poetry, prose and photographs about life in St. S e n a n ’s Hospital, Enniscorthy, was launched last month in killagoley Training & activation Centre, a branch of St. Senan’s Hospital, by award-winning Performance Poet Dave Lordan.

The book was commissioned to coincide with ongoing changes to the mental health services in the SouthEast, which incorporates the closing of St. Senan’s Hospital after more than a hundred and fifty years in operation.

Dark, poignant and full of understanding, it is an intimate collection of creative writing and photographs which invites the reader in to the old asylum and gently shines a light on the world that lay within.

The idea for the book came from photographer Rory Nolan and nurse Miriam Lambert, who were both keen that people who use the mental health services would have an opportunity to tell their side of the hospital’s story.

In all, twenty-nine writers elected to have their say, particularly keen to make their contribution now that the place is closing. For some, the task was arduous; revisiting traumatic times, writing and rewrit-

ing in order to get to a draft they were satisfied with. For others, it was the sunshine they remembered, ordinary moments that meant something special: being bought a coffee on their birthday, waltzing at a Christmas party, or smiling at the sight of a furze bush flourishing where it really shouldn’t.

Writer-Facilitator Sylvia Cullen, who edited the book, described the creative process: ‘Initially, those who chose to

take part responded to a selection of photographs, which Rory brought along to the writing workshops. These photos inspired some of the participants who already had a sense of what it was they wanted to say. Others chose a different route, preferring to write their story or poem first and then have a photograph taken in response to that piece of work. The resulting images speak for themselves - hinting at untold stories, weaving together tiny glimpses of life as it was lived in this building.’

Poet Pat Boran, who wrote the foreword, summed up the timeliness of publishing the book now: 'The work collected in this publication is both a farewell to St. Senan's Hospital and to the community of people who met and made things together there. It is a reminder of the power of writing to brighten our lives.'

Climbing Mountains in our Minds marks another milestone in this programme, as users of St. Senan’s Hospital consider, then reveal, their thoughts regarding the landmark building.’

St Vincent de Paul Church Collection

The collection takes place at all Churches in the diocese on 8th / 9th December 2012.

Last month, the Bishop of Ferns, Dr. Denis Brennan met with members of the St. Vincent de Paul regional and local teams as preparations are being finalised for the annual Church Gate collection, due to take place on the weekend of 8th / 9th December 2012.

At the meeting, the members of SVP outlined the current and growing challenges which the Society is address-

ing in the current economic downturn.

At the meeting, South East Regional President Mr. Rory McCauley said: "At present, the Society is asking for continued support and greater awareness of the many 'new and already existent poor' in Ireland. The Society is also recruiting volunteers and asks parishioners to give this invitation their consideration."

He continued: "The Society aims to act at all times with confidentiality and respect and conducts 'quality' home visitation by trained volunteers who act with sensitivity and focus as they seek to assist people to achieve short and long term solutions to their social and economic difficulties."

Mr. McCauley expressed gratitude for the great support that the Society has received

over the years and thanked the many volunteers of the Society who carry on the mission begun 200 years ago next year, by Blessed Frederic Ozanam.

In drawing the collection to the attention of the priests and people of the diocese, Bishop Brennan said that "we can but marvel at the dedication of the 10,000 volunteers who are the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in today's Ireland. The volunteers are uniquely placed to assist first hand in situations of grave need and they deserve our full encouragement and financial support."

"Each parish community is asked to highlight the collection again this year and to give it special place in the pre Christmas calendar," continued Bishop Brennan.

"Where a person can contribute financially, this is most welcome; where a person can volunteer and become an active member, this is equally important and it will ensure that the 199 years of quite and effective work of the Society continues well into the future." n
