A devastating fire engulfed the Hendrick Tyre Centre in Templeshannon, Enniscorthy, last month. As a nearby resident and regular customer of this popular and highly respected family business, the Slaney News cannot speak highly enough of the friendliness and the level of service provided by the management and staff there. The Hendrick family also take huge pride in the appearance of their premises which always looks well and is a positive contributor to the overall appearance of the town. This new and exciting circular-economy initiative will help reduce the use of singleuse coffee cups which are a persistent litter item encountered on a daily basis by exasperated Enniscorthy Tidy Towns volunteers. Nine coffee shops have signed up for this initiative which enables them to offer a reusable cup option to their customers. See full details on pages 14-15.

These are a persistent litter item that exasperate Enniscorthy Tidy Towns (ETT) volunteers on a daily basis.

Outlining the environmental impact of single-use cups, Sarah Fliessbach of Shareclub says, “An estimated 500,000 single-use coffee cups are disposed of in Ireland each day. Single-use cups cost both businesses and our environment through the throwaway nature of these products. Promoting customers to reuse is a win-win for businesses and the environment. And with new EU packaging regulations coming into effect from 2027, which will require takeaway businesses to provide options for customers to use their own containers and, from 2028, to offer reusable packaging within a reuse system, the Enniscorthy businesses participating in this new initiative will be ahead of the curve.”

Thanks to grant funding from Wexford County Council, ETT is teaming up with Shareclub – an Irish reusability company which is already working successfully with Greystones Tidy Towns and several other partners – to deliver a project titled ‘Shareclub Enniscorthy’.

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the financial and environmental benefits of increasing the circulation of reusable cups in Enniscorthy and promoting more circular economy practices. This ties in perfectly with the Enniscorthy urban area being Wexford

County Council’s first ‘Decarbonisation Zone’ (DZ) acting as a key pilot zone to test and implement local climate action, emissions reduction, and sustainable energy measures.

Nine coffee shops in Enniscorthy are participating: The Barn Cafe, Cafe 98, Cooney's Cafe, Cotton Tree, Impresso, Little Spoon, Meraki Cafe, O'Briens, The Pantry, and a couple more are expected to join soon.

cup initiative launched on a deposit-and-return basis with no upfront cost to the participating businesses.

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns has secured grant funding from Wexford Co. Council to purchase a consignment of 10oz/300ml reusable cups which have been distributed to participating outlets.

A €2 refundable deposit is charged to the customer on their initial takeaway coffee/other beverage, and the customer can claim this back at any participating outlet or swap for a fresh, clean cup when they next visit a participating coffee shop.

Some of the participating businesses will offer a discount to customers using a reusable cup.

DEFENDING HUMAN RIGHTS Founded in the 1990s, Amnesty International Wexford Group is one of eight Amnesty groups around Ireland contributing to that organisation’s tireless work in defending human rights all over the world.

This friendly and energetic group of local people holds monthly meetings at 6.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month in the lobby/coffee dock in Whites of Wexford hotel. They raise local awareness about human rights, organise events and stalls and film nights, fundraise, and campaign by letter-writing and lobbying.

Due to the ongoing violence towards the Palestinian people, the daily killings, the restrictions on aid leading to hunger, the destruction of UNRWA buildings, and the blatant disregard for ceasefires by the Israeli government, the group has resumed its presence on the first Thursday of each month in Redmond Square between 6.30pm and 7pm. The next gathering will be on Thursday 3rd September. The group invites all to attend,

Riverside Park Hotel charity day

The Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club charity day on the Slaney was held on 24th August 2026. And, very importantly, over €6,600 was raised on the day for Slaney Search & Rescue, with an additional amount raised since. 92% increase in new home construction The latest figures released last month by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage show that 658 new homes were commenced throughout Wexford in the first seven months of the year, an increase of 92% on the 342 homes that were commenced during the same period last year.

Nationwide, a total of 18,974 new homes were commenced since the start of the year, an increase of 152% on the 7,539 homes commenced in the first seven months of 2025 and representing the second highest number of new homes since recording began in 2014.

The positive momentum observed in the first seven months of this year builds on strong figures for 2024 and 2025 combined when a total of 85,723 new homes were commenced, an increase of 43% compared with the combined total for the previous two-year period (2022 and 2023).

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD welcomed the latest figures: “Momentum in the housing sector is seeing an uptick and these are strong figures as we move into the second half of the year.

“I have set ambitious targets in the Housing Action Plan and we need to keep our shoulder firmly to the wheel. I want more

homes delivered and thousands of people are counting on that progress. I’m under no illusion about it.

“Commencements aren’t the be all and end all, and in my view the real measure is always final delivery and keys in the hand of a homeowner or a family supported with housing. But commencement rates do mark a critical milestone in development and they also give key insight into the health of the sector and what’s to come in the coming months.”

Of the 658 new homes commenced in Wexford in the first seven months of this year, 373 (57%) are scheme dwellings, 137 (21%) are apartments, and 148 (22%) are one-off units. n

A decimated business “will fight to rebuild”

The Hendrick family released the following statement following the devastating fire at their Templeshannon premises last month.

We sincerely hope this exceptionally popular and highly regarded business can rebuild and continue to play an important part in the commercial life of Enniscorthy.

❝ To Our Community: We have struggled to find the words to express what the last few days have meant to us.

The fire that has devastated our premises has also devastated our livelihood, and we are still trying to come to terms with what has happened. Right now, there is so much uncertainty about what lies ahead.

We don't know exactly where this road will take us, or what the future holds for our family and our business.

But if there is one thing we have, it is hope.

Over the past few days, the messages, calls, visits, and offers of help from people throughout our local community have touched us in a way that is difficult to put into words. We always knew we were a family business, but the incredible response has made us realise that this place was so much more than that. It had become a part of the community too... a place where people called in, had a chat and a laugh, got advice, sorted a tyre, fixed a puncture, or simply knew they would be looked after and back on the road.

The business began with our father, Bill, over 35 years ago. He started with little more than a vision, a determination to serve his community and to help keep people safe on the road and, famously, one wheel brace to his name.

From those very humble beginnings, he built something that became such an important part of our family and our lives.

For Bill, the business was never simply a job. It gave him purpose. It gave him a reason to get up every morning. Through all the difficulties, challenges, and setbacks he faced over the years, he loved every minute of it. He loved meeting people, helping people, and knowing that the work he did mattered.

The Hendrick name has also been part of Enniscorthy for generations.

Long before the tyre business, previous generations of our family had butcher shops across the town. To us, being part of Enniscorthy has always meant more than simply running a business. It has meant being

part of a community, and that is something we have always been incredibly proud of.

We know only too well that without the people of this community, we would never have survived for over three decades. Every customer who called in, every person who recommended us, every family who trusted us with their vehicles, and every person who supported us through the years helped make the business what it became.

And now, when we are at our lowest point, that same community has shown us a kindness and generosity that we will never forget.

To every person who has reached out, called, messaged, visited, offered help, shared our story, or simply kept us in their thoughts, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

To the emergency services, the Gardaí, the local councillors, and everyone who has helped, supported, or stood by us during this incredibly difficult time, we are deeply grateful.

Not one of your kind intentions has gone unnoticed.

We honestly hope and pray that one day we will be in a position to repay that kindness in some way.

The road ahead of us is going to be long, difficult, and uncertain. We have no idea what the coming weeks and months will bring. But we promise that we will do everything within our power, and exhaust every possible avenue, to find a way forward.

We will fight to rebuild. We will fight to get back on our feet. And most importantly, we will fight to get back up and running and serving our community again.

For more than 35 years this business has been built on hard work, family, trust, and the support of the people around us. We are not ready to let that story end here.

From our family to all of yours, thank you. Your support has carried us through the last few days when we didn't know how we were going to keep going.

Whatever happens next, we will never forget the kindness Enniscorthy and the surrounding communities have shown our family.

At the same time, ECA has launched a fundraising campaign focused on turning community ideas into practical action. A key priority is The Hut – Community EcoHub, which ECA wants to keep open and develop as a base for repair cafés, swap shops, energy advice, workshops, training and activities for local groups.

A €3,000 contribution would help deliver four repair cafés, four swap shops, four energy clinics, four community education classes, and four networking events each year.

ECA also hopes to build a stock of equipment that can be loaned to other community groups, including sewing machines, bike repair kits, tools, and repair and swap-shop equipment.

One of the Hall’s major longer-term projects is replacing its asbestos roof, allowing solar panels to be installed. ECA needs to secure at least €10,000 in cofunding to access available grants for this important project.

The campaign will also support the Shannon Way and Enniscorthy’s green spaces, with €10,000 helping to co-fund archways, signage, painting, and other improvements along the Shannon Way. ECA

An occasional column in which our special correspondent Atticus catches people doing good things and not so good things!

Can Ivan’s new book beat his first?

There are no published figures for the sales of political memoirs, but we can safely say that the new book The Game of Life and How to Win It, by Wexford’s own Ivan Yates, will sell in several thousands.

It’s a 300-page hardback, to be published

by Gill at a modest €21 later in September.

Gone will be the homes of possibly two thousand residents and holiday home owners.

Now that Ivan’s a commoner and no longer a government minister, newspaper columnist, serial broadcaster on Newstalk, or podcasting with Matt Cooper, it’s none of our business what sales will be like.

He’s now a self-confessed businessman, an entrepreneur – but it would be interesting to know.

That’s the grim assessment of old experts and residents who spoke on condition of anonymity after a Wexford County Council exhibition at the Coast Hotel.

When Old Att worked in a national newspaper in Dublin, belting it out on his typewriter at seven in the morning, a young minister, Ivan, burst open the doors having come from Enniscorthy, two hours away, to meet a colleague, a fellow Blueshirt, for a fawning interview about farmers.

A Younger Att felt compelled to go down to the Ferrycarrig Hotel to the launch of an irreverent memoir written by Ivan covering his time as a Minister under Taoiseach John Bruton TD at that time. It was titled Full On. Although there were a few fibs in it, it was entertaining if not useful.

Gone too will be Rosetown townland, between the village centre and Rosslare Europort. Remaining only may be the railway line which has been heavily buttressed by Irish Rail in recent years.

Sea is ‘eating away’ Wexford while €7m fix is years away The sea will wipe out a heavily populated stretch from Curracloe beach down almost to Rosslare Europort.

Lost will be the Raven Point, Curracloe, parts of Wexford Harbour close to the town, the Coast Hotel, Kelly’s Hotel, Rosslare Golf Club, the Sports and Community

It will happen within thirty to fifty years, a mere blip in time, unless the coastal erosion at Rosslare Strand is stopped right now! ‘Thirty years is tomorrow,’ said a resident.

They said that apart from warnings from Billy Kelly, owner of the world-famous Kelly’s Hotel where George Bernard Shaw once stayed, there has been ‘a serious lack of urgency’ about the prospect by Government. Government and their experts who have several reports on the impact, have known about the danger since at least the 1970s. A consultant’s report from the 1990s confirms the dangers.

The attendance at the Ferrycarrig was full on. Everyone was squeezed in. The publisher from Hachette said he had never in his life seen a crowd that big at a book launch when most book launches in Dublin had 50.

A young journalist there, an obvious Blue, eschewing accuracy and used to embellishing for friends, claimed that the attendance was ‘more than 700’. But old Att, a well-seasoned hack, counted 693, even accounting for those coming and going.

of the sea over several years wiped out the entire village at the Burrows dislodging fifty families who had to relocate to Wexford town and overseas.

The Burrows, or Spit, a promontory acting as a guardian of Wexford Harbour, has been battered by the sea for generations.

According to local legend, John Barry, the father of the American Navy, lived there with his uncle and aunt. Ironically, a monument there commemorates those who helped save the lives of many lost to the sea, known in the areas as the graveyard of a thousand ships. Now, one hundred years after the sea and storms sank the Fort village at its point, the Burrows is in grave danger again.

Other areas, along the Wexford coast, such as at Kilpatrick, Courtown, are being eaten away similarly. One Rosslare resident recalled the sea being at least two miles out from the current beach. It seems that due to the effects of climate change, the rate of erosion has been accelerated

in the past twenty years or more.

Meanwhile, the sea is rising at the rate of between two and six millimetres per year, raising questions if any building of rock armour wall defences will be enough to withstand the rise in the longer term. New rock groynes that will be barriers stretch-

The reason is that waves, and in particular the currents, driven by wind, tides and water density, coming from the direction of the Europort or Rosslare Pier are hitting the Burrows. Soil is soft on the East coast compared with the rock of the West of Ireland.

Those currents have been eating the beach away at a rate of two to two-and-ahalf metres per year for at least fifty years.

ing out into the sea at right angles to the beach, together with dune nourishment put in place by Wexford County Council, will trap the sand in the meantime.

Recent examples of the power of the currents are young holiday makers in Rosslare Strand swept off their feet while swimming. A local seasoned swimmer was lucky to be alive after a current caught him. He clung onto a rock.

The currents have eaten away at least 50 metres of the beach in 25 years.

Concerned residents and holiday property owners wanted to know the future of Rosslare Strand at the public exhibition presented by Nicholas O’Dwyer, consulting engineers on behalf of Wexford County Council in the Coast Hotel. They jostled for position to take photographs on their mobile phones of the 14 panels of information and maps.

“I am genuinely unimpressed,” said one man, who like many others came away with more questions than answers.

Another enjoined that he was ‘depressed’ at what he found out.

Despite the commitment of the Government and Government Minister Patrick O’Donovan TD in 2020 to provide a ‘paltry, loose change’ funding of €7 million as a solution to the issue of coastal erosion there, one asked, ‘Why has nothing happened in the past six years?’ adding ‘And now it’ll probably take another six!’ ‘Why has it taken so long?’

The current 7m coastal erosion project is scheduled to be completed in 2031. However, if an objector finds ‘a Pollardstown snail’ (about two millimetres long), or a rare bat, the protection of Rosslare Strand from coastal erosion will be delayed for infinity with catastrophic effect. A Rosslare woman has threatened to ‘eat every snail in sight’.

Who’s to blame for giving coastal erosion in Wexford such ‘a lack of urgency?’ Some say it’s not Government, others that it’s not hard-working civil servants, and others that it was lack of money at the time.

Politicians respond to pressure and maybe the blame for the delay lies with Us, plain ordinary people, for avoiding speaking up and seeking urgency!

A priest in plain English About 40 years ago, Chrissie Maher from Liverpool set up a group to fight gobbledygook and legalese. She missed out on a formal education and didn’t know how to read until she was in her teens. Her employer gave her night classes. It equipped her to take on the establishment – the Civil Service and the lawyers.

She founded a community newspaper, the Tuebrook Bugle, to give local people their entitlements in terms that they could understand. It became the Plain English campaign, now a model for how bureaucracies and businesses and broadcasters throughout the world should deliver their spoken and written messages.

Atticus was reminded of Chrissie when he attended Mass in St Mary’s Church, Kilmore village. Atticus often wanders off the beaten path to see how the other crowd do things.

He recalled the basics of good communication – the sender, the receiver, feedback, and the message in Plain English.

Locked loo More than 600 women went to Rosslare Strand for the annual Dip in the Nip organised by Hope Cancer Support Centre to raise funds for cancer research. Congratulations to the organisers.

The overall performance contrasted greatly with the dreary morose droning in sesquipedalian sentences presented in other parishes. Communication is more than words. It’s the feeling put into delivering the message.

Having dipped in the nip, many headed for the public loo beside the car park in the middle of Rosslare Strand village. It was between six and seven in the morning.

A simply informative Kilmore Parish Weekly Newsletter repeated and reinforced Fr Pat’s message.

Fr Pat, a naturally caring people’s person of the Davidstown Mernagh dynasty, ticked all the boxes. And after the Mass, he walked chatting and joking among the now spiritually uplifted.

Old Att is thinking of going to Mass again – next time in Kilmore where the music is beautiful, the people are lovely, and the priest speaks volubly from his heart in plain English.

Katie charmed the customer Waitresses and cashiers are at the front line of customer service. They have to adapt to every human whim and, if necessary, charm him or her. So, what does a waitress or cashier or till operator in a café or restaurant do when the scones are gone?

And so it was at Wheelock’s, a good food emporium out in the country from Ennis-

corthy town where you drive past the hanging, ripening strawberries to park the car and, now salivating, reach the restaurant.

A charming Katie Hearne from Monageer at the till told the customer with polished delicacy in hushed caring tones that the scones were all gone. Faster than you could say jack rabbit or cat out, she improvised. She managed the customer experience and quickly charmed him into selecting a delightful other cake from a freshly baked display.

And when the customer’s debit card failed, she managed that too. Discreetly and courteously, not knowing that a millionaire was testing her responses.

The public loo, normally open at eight o’clock, was locked.

However, could someone in control not open the loo an hour or so earlier than usual for the special occasion? It would be a relief to so many.

The Belfast question Our agent Eibhlin of Donegal, Armagh, and Dublin ancestry, regular visitor to Wexford, was hugely impressed with the Fleadh in Belfast. She thought it was the best event she was ever at in her entire seventy plus life. We gently told her that it was modelled on the Fleadh masterminded by Paddy Berry, Eddie Taaffe, George Lawlor and colleagues and held in Wexford last year.

The ‘yellow hats’ were an army of more than 1,000 volunteers organised by Volunteer Now and Fleadh Ceoil na hÉireann, who, as in Wexford, kept the event flowing smoothly and the crowds happy.

Eibhlin is a poet and author, and being of the curious type, she asked the head of the ‘yellow hats’ what was the most oft asked question asked by the million people there.

He answered: “Where is the loo?”

The weeds of Wexford Lift up your eyes to the roofs of Wexford town. There you may see green vegetation or foliage growing from the gutters or the roofs or chimneys or the windows.

If you’re into biodiversity and you like plants growing from inside your rooms and out through your windows, fair enough, as long as they don’t upset anybody. If they are small trees or saplings, well people may think you’re growing a forest upstairs.

If the green things are growing out of the side of your chimney and there’s a green mould running down the outside walls, it may indicate a problem. Ingress/egress maybe. Dampness? Neglect? Dereliction?

Interestingly, the roofs, windows, and gutters in suburban Wexford – we saw not one incidence of green plants out of place there.

During Opera Festival time, journalists, press photographers, broadcasters, and television crews from all over the world, trawl the streets of Wexford for interesting features that may depict the town and

county. If they’re looking for flora (plant life) and fauna (maybe animal life sometimes – you never know what an open window conceals), they may just look skywards.

If an opera star is part of a pop-up group singing enthralling pieces from Mascagni or Beethoven or Haydn or Strauss, high up from the windows of Main Street, Wexford, a television crew or a photographer from Vanity Fair may focus on a cut away of a sapling growing out of a Wexford town window.

What would that say to the world about Wexford?

Wexford ‘huns’ get ready for the opera They’re three Wexford ‘huns’, all townies, and in a few weeks’ time, they’ll be greeting and serving some of the world’s greatest opera celebrities including tekkies, musicians, singers, buffs, and media. They’re members of the staff of La Vista restaurant up on the top floor of the National Opera House.

They call themselves ‘huns’ – a word that is a term of warm endearment and affection particular to Wexford townies.

Strangers may think it’s a romantic come-on meaning ‘Cmere I want ya honey.’ But it’s not. It technically means ‘youngster’ or ‘beautiful’. Wexford townies will flatter you when they say ‘How ya Hun?!’

They do that in spades in the National Opera House and give rapid service with a smile. A seasoned connoisseur told us that the food in La Vista is ‘A-one and is very reasonable and the staff are very friendly.’

Lynn’s thoughtprovoking new exhibition 'Material World', a thought-provoking textile exhibition exploring our relationship with clothing, waste, and creative approaches to circularity, is coming to County Wexford this September and October as part of a wider tour. And everyone is invited to attend.

Created by Enniscorthy-based circular designer, educator, and environmental advocate Lynn Haughton of The Upcycle Movement, the exhibition centres around a striking globe sculpture made from discarded clothing and invites visitors to explore the impacts behind the clothes we wear – from the resources used to make them to what else is possible when we no longer want them.

Throughout its Wexford tour, Material World will welcome local school groups for facilitated sessions, alongside special community evenings where visitors can experience the exhibition, take part in hands-on activities and conversations, and discover creative, practical ways to rethink, repair, and reimagine textiles.

The exhibition is open to everyone to visit during the participating venues’ normal opening hours, giving members of the public the opportunity to explore Material World in their own time.

Visitors are invited to add their own voice to the project by leaving a message to Mother Earth, sharing a thought, a wish, hope, or reflection for the future. These messages will help shape a future exhibition, allowing the voices gathered throughout the tour to become part of the continuing story of Material World.

Hospital parking under scrutiny Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow-Wexford Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has called for a funded plan to phase out hospital car-parking charges, saying patients and families should not be charged simply because they need healthcare.

Figures provided by the HSE in response to a Parliamentary Question by Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson on Health, David Cullinane TD, show that hospital carparking income at Wexford General Hospital rose from €184,961 in 2022 to €303,846 in 2025 – a 64% increase.

Statewide, income increased from €7.39 million in 2021 to €17.76 million in 2025.

Deputy Ó Súilleabháin said: “Income from hospital car-parking fees at Wexford General Hospital rose from €184,961 in 2021/2022 to €303,846 in 2025 – a 64% increase.

“Hospital car-parking charges are a charge on being sick and visiting families and friends in hospital.

“No one chooses to be sick or to have a sick child in hospital. Yet patients and

families in Wexford are being asked to pay these charges again and again.

“People with disabilities, carers, and families visiting loved ones in hospital are also being hit.

“We need a funded plan to phase these charges out. The government should provide replacement funding as charges are phased out, while ensuring hospital parking remains available for patients and visitors.” n

GP services severely lacking Wicklow-Wexford TD Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has said that GP services in Wexford are not keeping pace with the county's growing population, warning that access to a family doctor is becoming increasingly difficult for many families across the county.

Deputy Ó Súilleabháin says: "The latest figures show that Wexford had 73 GMS doctors and 7 private GPs in December 2025. In 2020, the county had 77 GMS doctors and just 1 private GP. Overall, that amounts to a net increase of only two GPs over five years, despite Wexford's population growing by an estimated 15,000 people.

"These figures are deeply concerning. While the population has risen significantly, GP numbers have effectively stood still. Even more worrying is the fact that the number of GMS doctors, who provide care to medical card and GP-visit card holders, has actually fallen.

"Across Wexford, people are struggling to register with a GP, practices are closing their lists.

One example was a Gorey practice last year which had a waiting list of 200 people, and they had to close it and families are being forced to travel further to access basic healthcare.

This is a problem I hear about regularly from constituents.

"General practice is the front door to our health service. When people cannot access a GP, they delay treatment or end up attending already overcrowded emergency departments. That is bad for patients and places further pressure on hospitals.

"The government must urgently increase GP recruitment, expand GMS contracts, and provide targeted supports to attract and retain doctors in counties such as Wexford.

Population growth cannot continue to outstrip investment in primary care.

"Wexford deserves its fair share of healthcare resources, and local families deserve timely access to a GP when they need one." n

MARA indicated that the application for a MAC can run concurrently with the planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP). A request for a Pre Application Consultation has been submitted to ACP.

VINEGAR HILL New pathways and seating have been provided over recent months, along with new panels detailing the experience of the battle of Vinegar Hill in 1798 in both Irish and English. Parking and access improvements to Vinegar Hill are being investigated by Wexford Co. Council (WCC). The Enniscorthy East Community Development Association believes it has identified a site that could be used to allow access to the Hill for buses etc, and could potentially house a new welcome centre/ coffee shop/toilets, etc and have contacted EMD officials about it.

Phase 2 – Flood Relief Works. This phase of the scheme will include the construction of the remaining flood relief measures for the town. The next steps are: Assess alternative design options in detail and shortlist these for consultation. Identify the preferred scheme to be brought forward for planning. Decide the appropriate planning route. Prepare planning documents and submit for planning approval. Ecology surveys are being kept up to date, such as wintering bird surveys. The application to MARA for the pre-submission meeting was submitted on the 8/05/2026.

ST JOHN’S COMMUNITY WELLBEING & ACTIVITY GARDEN This new green space, including an amphitheatre, is a vibrant community hub that is safe, accessible and welcoming to all. Some months ago, a new walking route around St. John’s Community Hospital campus was officially opened.

ENNISCORTHY TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION PROJECTS Market Square and Castle Quarter Projects: The Part 8 process for the Market Square project was concluded on 9th September 2024. The design of the scheme has been amended to reflect the outcome of the Part 8 process. An updated cost estimate for the project has been prepared to reflect these changes.

Planning stage design for the Castle Quarter Project is also now complete, and the Part 8 process concluded successfully on 13th April 2026. The former Castle nightclub has been acquired, and a CPO process to acquire other adjacent lands is in progress.

Consultants for detailed design, procurement and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Templeshannon scheme. Stage 1 of the tender competition to appoint design consultants for the Market Square and Templeshannon project has concluded. Stage 2 of the process is ongoing, with consultants expected to be appointed in early September.

An application for the whole of the Market Square and Town Centre Regeneration Project, along with the enabling and demolition works for the Castle Quarter project, was made under the new Town and Cities Regeneration Investment fund on 1st May 2026.

The Scheme has a total approved budget of €51m approx. On completion, it is expected to protect 326 properties – 159 homes and 167 businesses.

BUNCLODY PARK A Stage 2 Natura Impact Statement, plans and particulars were submitted to An Bord Pleanála under Section 177AE. The Board was satisfied that the proposed development would not adversely affect the integrity of the European Site (the Slaney River Valley Special area of Conservation) in view of the Site’s conservation objectives. The application was approved with conditions at the end of February. WCC Property Section has signed contracts with the landowner to acquire lands for this project. Wexford County Council has appointed MGM Quantity Surveyors to prepare an Order of Magnitude cost estimate, to prepare for application for funds under the next Town and Villages funding call. A design team will be appointed from a framework established on foot of the Market Square/Templeshannon competition.

PAIRC NA GABHAR BUNCLODY Part 8 Planning Permission was granted on 13th April 2026. The project will progress when funding is sourced.

RAFTER STREET PEDESTRIANISATION EMD is now strictly enforcing the pedestrianisation. Signage has been erected stating current byelaw times – between 10.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday. The possibility of extending the pedestrianisation hours to cover Saturdays and Sundays will be looked at.

LIBRARIES Under WCC’s three-year capital programme (2026-2028), €4.5m will go towards a new library in Enniscorthy, and €3.1m for Bunclody Library.

Templeshannon Regeneration Project: Consultants for preliminary design, planning, detailed design, procurement, and works supervision will be procured in tandem with consultants for the Market Square scheme. An application was submitted on 1st May 2026 for the project as part of the Category 1A Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund call seeking funding of €150,000 for project development and design team fees.

ALL-WEATHER ASTRO PITCH, ROSS ROAD The Part 8 planning process for the proposed changing room facilities at the Astro pitch has been completed and formally approved. ENNISCORTHY CCTV A total of 22 CCTV cameras have been installed at different locations within Enniscorthy Town. The system is now live.

Bunclody CCTV Project: The system is expected to go live by late September.

ENNISCORTHY TRAILS Works are ongoing on design and planning to extend the existing town trails network to link to the Ringwood and Borodale trails.

ENNISCORTHY SPORTS HUB A contractor, Kevin Thorpe Ltd, is now working on the second phase (sports equipment storage area, open space area, changing rooms, toilets, showers, and a small office) of the Sports Hub. The project should be complete by this coming September.

The second phase has been made possible through investment of €450,000 by The Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Wexford Co. Council providing funding of €150,000. A hammer cage area has been marked out and works are due to commence in the coming weeks.

ENNISCORTHY NORTH BUSINESS DISTRICT (Old Dublin Road) Some works have been carried out in recent years on the Enniscorthy North Business District where over 2,000 people currently work. Some funding has been received lately which will allow some additional work to be done on the active travel elements of the masterplan for the area.

MURPHY FLOODS SITE This newly opened carpark adds 37 carparking spaces for the town. The site is valued at €280,000. Wexford Co. Council is committed to the long-term development of the site on a commercial basis; and so it will be placed on the open market at some stage in the future.

TURRET ROCKS A Part 8 Planning Application is being prepared for the overall plan. The Playground project is at design stage and will be funded by Wexford Co. Council itself. Design and costings have been received for the Skatepark for which an application is being prepared for a Sports Capital grant this year.

ENNISCORTHY FLOOD RELIEF SCHEME The Scheme is now proceeding on a phased basis.

Phase 1 – Bridgeworks. This phase of the project will include the construction of the new River Slaney Bridge, the removal of the Seamus Rafter Bridge, and the construction of a new pedestrian bridge in the town centre. Public consultation on the preferred option for Phase 1 took place late last year. An application for planning approval for Phase 1 is to be submitted in Q3 2026. Refinement of the design of the proposed pedestrian bridge is being carried out to enhance the structure visually.

Traffic modelling is being carried for the revised road layouts and traffic management

COLUMBARIUM WALL Work on the new Columbarium Wall in Enniscorthy Lawn Cemetery has concluded.

There are 16 niches in the wall. Price per niche to be determined.

BALLYHOGUE COMMUNITY HUB The project has an expected completion date of June 2027.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS €200,000 has been secured for pedestrian crossings and traffic calming outside the Enniscorthy Community College on the Milehouse Road. This also includes funding for traffic calming from Forgelands into Bellefield Road past Lidl and Aldi. Work on a number of crossings on the east side of town has commenced.

BLACKSTAIRS Wexford Co. Council has been awarded almost €50,000 to fund a feasibility study for a walking and cycling trail connecting Bunclody, Kiltealy, Killanne, Templeduigan and Ballywilliam.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK ACCESS ROAD PHASE 2 The Technical Consultancy Services Contract has been awarded for Stage (i) to (v) design services. Site investigations are complete, and design work is ongoing. The tender for construction works was published March 2026. Tenders have been received and appointment of main works contractor is anticipated in quarter 3 this year.

ISLAND ROAD CAR PARK, ENNISCORTHY There is currently limited access to Island Rd car park due to Flood Protection Works which should be complete by mid September.

ENNISCORTHY TECHNOLOGY PARK – IDA ADVANCE FACTORY A planning application for a proposed advance factory building in Enniscorthy Technology Park was submitted in December 2025. Final grant of planning permission was issued in March 2026.

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE At the June 2026 meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District it was revealed that the Council has submitted an application under the 2026 Town & Village Renewal Scheme, Building Acquisition Measure, to purchase a premises in Templeshannon for the purposes of a Family Resource Centre. n

Ambition ‘26 Ambition ’26 was held in GreenTechHQ on 31st August – a morning of insights, conversations, and connections with some of Ireland’s leading entrepreneurs and business minds: David McNamara of AIB, Norman Crowley of CoolPlanet, and Bobby Healy of Manna Air Delivery, with MC Ian Kehoe of The Currency.

David didn't frighten us with his overview of future economic outlook, albeit a note to ‘proceed with caution’. Overall many factors are to be considered and elements to play out but one thing is certain – inflation will rise and with it interest rates, we are better positioned now than in 2022 for the geopolitical upheavals, and there are plenty of reminders as to why we should be weaning ourselves off fossil fuels.

These crossings will facilitate in particular students attending Coláiste Bríde Secondary School. Work is ongoing at the first crossing at Spring Valley at the 21 Steps. See photo opposite.

Local people working alongside Enniscorthy Community Alliance, Enniscorthy East Community Development, Templeshannon Community Centre, Wexford Local Development, Enniscorthy Municipal District, Wexford Co. Council, and GreenTechHQ, continue to make progress improving the physical appearance of the area with cleaning and painting, planting, murals, new archways, window boxes, wall panels, laneway cleanups, removal of rubbish from black spots in the area, etc.

Wexford Co. Council is advancing plans for Templeshannon regeneration and a huge new housing and community facilities development at Turret Rocks. A new Community Centre is being planned. A Family Resource Centre is in the pipeline. Design work on a new Playground is underway. Design and costings have been received for a new Skatepark.

Vinegar Hill has seen a number of improvements including impressive new information panels, and new pathways have been provided over recent months with new directional signage to follow.

Wexford Local Development’s wonderful PhotoVoice project is reaching its conclusion and we’ll carry a full report in next month’s issue.

And, of course, the Captain Wafer Hall is now back in community use thanks to Enniscorthy Community Alliance. It’s great to see it being used by local groups including the Enniscorthy Men’s Choir.

So if you’ve ever thought about joining a choir, now is the perfect time! The Enniscorthy Men’s Choir is starting back next week, so you can go along, meet the group, and see what it’s all about.

Litter Fine to Increase to €250 Wexford County Council is reminding the public that the fixed payment litter fine will increase from €150 to €250 from 1st September 2026.

New Ross Piano Festival With just three weeks to go, excitement is building for the 20th anniversary of the New Ross Piano Festival, with ticket sales going strong for the five days of world-class music from 23rd–27th September. This landmark anniversary festival will bring an exceptional programme of concerts to New Ross.

Established in 2006, the New Ross Piano Festival was created by a partnership between the local voluntary music organisation, Music for New Ross, and the internationally acclaimed concert pianist Finghin Collins. 20 years later the festival continues to host an exciting programme of piano concerts, featuring original collaborations between artists across a variety of classical genres.

This milestone festival opens on Wednesday 23rd September with the Young Pianist Concert, showcasing 20 gifted young pianists from the southeast on a Steinway piano.

On Thursday 24th September, one of Ireland’s most exciting young pianistcomposers, Jamie Duffy, performs with his quartet. Duffy’s distinctive blend of folk, classical, and contemporary influences has earned him international recognition, with his debut single Solas amassing more than 135 million Spotify streams, 27 million YouTube views, and millions of TikTok views.

The popular Coffee Concerts begin on Friday 25th September with Irish pianist Dida Condria, the highest-placed Irish pianist in the 2025 Dublin International Piano Competition, followed by a masterclass with Bavouzet. Friday evening features the world premiere of composer Gerry Murphy’s The Essential Isness of Being, performed by Artistic Director Finghin Collins, alongside performances by acclaimed French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, violist Rachel Roberts, clarinettist Robert Plane, and Ukrainian pianist Anna Fedorova.

On Saturday 26th September, Londonbased pianist Rebeca Omordia, described by BBC World Service as an ‘African classical music pioneer’, presents a Coffee Concert celebrating the music of African composers. The afternoon brings the vibrant sounds of jazz with award-winning New York pianist Judy Carmichael, while the evening programme features Collins, Fedorova, and Bavouzet in a rich programme of chamber and solo works.

The festival concludes on Sunday 27th September with a Coffee Concert by Swiss pianist Fabrizio Chiovetta, followed by the spectacular Concerto Gala.

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra joins Finghin Collins, Anna Fedorova, and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet for a landmark closing concert featuring beloved concertos by Beethoven, Chopin, and Grieg, bringing the 20th anniversary celebrations to a memorable finale. n

Breeda Conroy, Show Secretary, was hearty in her praise for the voluntary helpers on the day and in the run-up to the Show. “Just goes to show what happens when a community rallies around to keep an old tradition going for another year. Stunning show by all-teenage production team and cast Following twelve months of hard work, Slaney Musical and Dramatics Society presented its first ever production, Hadestown: Teen Edition, on 20th to the 22nd of August, at the intimate Wexford Arts Centre. And what an amazing production it was of this epic award-winning musical, and even more amazing when one considers that all on stage and in the production team are teenagers from all over Co. Wexford.

The full house on the night the Slaney News attended certainly lapped it all up and responded with a spontaneous standing ovation at the end.

The talented director was Dervla Moran, a native of Enniscorthy, who is now going into 6th year in Meanscoil Gharman, whose guiding hand ensured the show was full of heart, soul, creativity, and passion. Dervla is one of the founders of the Society along with 18year-old Niall Martin – a student at Enniscorthy CBS, who performed superbly in the lead role of Orpheus.

Ensemble: Áine Dunlop, Alisia Fadian, Caoimhe Murphy, Hannah Redmond, Sara Hanton, Issy Grannell, Nathan Vos, Jess O'Donovan, Aoife Rose Doyle, Olivia McCamley.

Hadestown: Teen Edition intertwines two mythic tales – that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone – as it invites one on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back.

American singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell whose beguiling melodies pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love in this folk musical which was presented in arrangement with Concord Theatricals.

For a well-established musical society this would be a difficult production to stage, but this all-teenage cast and crew managed to pull it off with aplomp and confidence which defied their youthful appearance.

The superb choreography on the very tight Arts Centre stage was a credit to Ella Whelan and Niall Martin. The wonderful Musical Director was Cliodhna Ní Chuilinn.

The set design and costumes worked perfectly. And a word for Mentor Pete McCamley who modestly assured us that he could take little or no credit for the amazing show we had just witnessed.

We look forward to seeing all the performers in lots more productions in the months and years ahead. n

Nature’s Music at Opera House Words & pics by Maria Nolan What a wonderful venue it was – the National Opera House, Wexford, on 27th August 2026 – for the launch of Noel Culleton’s book Nature’s Music exploring the massive influence nature had on one hundred of the world’s greatest composers, most notably Beethoven and Haydn.

MC Michael Doyle told the large audience that unfortunately due to illness Anne Doyle, who was to launch the book, was unable to attend and he called on Mayor of Wexford Vicky Barron to fill the void, which she managed to do admirably with her musical background and knowledge.

Noel was blown away by the compliments and by the very large gathering of family, friends, and acquaintances, and regaled all saying, ‘Right from the start the main inspiration for music came from nature, from wind and water, and birds and beasts, over the millennia, the sky, the wind, trees, hedges, rivers, seas, and all creatures great and small inspired composers..

‘Joseph Hadyn composed one of the most stunning pieces of music’, Noel went on, ‘to celebrate creation, based on the Book of Genesis.’

‘Pastoral Music’, Noel explained, ‘is the term used to describe a genre of music that celebrates the great outdoors and Beethoven is the undisputed master of this genre, his Pastoral Symphony depicts the sights and sounds of the countryside in music and has yet to be equalled.’

‘Down through the ages, composers have always been inspired by the seasons, a plethora of concertos reflecting spring, summer, autumn, and winter bear testament to that.’

New comedy to aid Hope Centre From the team behind the successful ‘Buddy’ musicals Adrienne Murphy and the creative team behind the incredibly successful ‘Buddy’ musicals is breaking new ground by staging an original comedy this September in the IFA Centre, Enniscorthy, in aid of the Hope Centre in Enniscorthy.

The Wake: A comedy set in 1962 Kenneth is called home from London as his father has passed away suddenly. Unbeknownst to his family, Kenneth has married an actress, who insists on returning home with him. He can't tell his mother about the marriage as another shock would kill her. He can't tell his widowed aunt Mags who lives with his mother as she would kill him. It transpires that Kenneth is not the only one keeping secrets.

In memory of the late Carmel Heffernan The Carmel Heffernan Memorial Football Camp and Raffle took place last month over three truly special days, raising an incredible €12,000 for the Hope Cancer Support Centre in Enniscorthy.

Organised by Carmel’s sister, Tracey Jennings, with the support of the legendary Paul McGrath, along with a huge number of coaches from England and Ireland including Robert Pembo from Derby County, Tucker O’Brien, Darren, Filip, Gary, and Leigh, and the wonderful Leisure Max staff – Henry, PJ, Teresa, Oisin, and Natasha. And of course Aileen and Adrian of Leisure Max in Wexford who were also personally thanked

by Paul McGrath for the huge work they put in to make the week such a success.

The €12,000 raised for the Hope Centre will help families who need it most and in Tracey’s words, “We are so proud that this is Carmel’s legacy.”

A very appreciative Michael Jordan from the Hope Centre addressed the gathering to thank everyone for the huge donation which needless to say will be put to great use in the Hope Centre. Michael also spoke movingly of Carmel and of all her family.

Reflecting afterwards about the camp, Tracey says, “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to every single person who supported the soccer camp in memory of Carmel. I don’t want to thank anyone individually because this was a true team effort and I would hate to leave anyone out. This camp was about Carmel and about all those who have lost their battle to cancer. The incredible €12,000 raised will go to the Hope Cancer Support Centre and we truly hope it helps support others and their families on their own cancer journey. Yesterday’s closing of the camp was an incredibly emotional moment. Seeing so many people come

together to celebrate Carmel’s life and support such an important cause was something our family will never forget. A huge congratulations to Jim Bob Dempsey, the winner of the signed jersey raffle.

With over 600 entries, the support for the raffle was simply incredible. To everyone who donated, attended, volunteered, coached, sponsored, bought raffle tickets, or simply shared a post thank you. You have honoured Carmel’s memory in the most beautiful way and our family will be forever grateful.”

“Carmel will be loved, remembered, and missed beyond words forever by everyone. But her memory will live on in the Carmel Heffernan Memorial Football Camp which will take place again next year. Fashion with a purpose ‘Restyle Runway 2026’ brings Sustainable Fashion to Enniscorthy Castle in support of the Hope Cancer Support Centre.

On Saturday, 19 September 2026, as part of this year’s Enniscorthy Arts & Culture Festival, Restyle Runway 2026 will transform Enniscorthy Castle into a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and community, with a unique fashion show dedicated to making a positive impact through style.

Running from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, the event will showcase stunning runway looks created from pre-loved and repurposed clothing from the Hope charity shop and Vision Ireland, demonstrating how fashion can be both beautiful and environmentally responsible.

More than a fashion show, Restyle Runway encourages people to rethink waste, embrace sustainable choices, and celebrate creativity through upcycling and reuse.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Movie Reviews by Kyle Walsh 

Yes, I know, there are a lot of us genuinely fatigued with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Apart from Wolverine v Deadpool, it has been a franchise of hit and miss for far too long, unfortunately there are a lot of misses. So the franchise needed something fresh, something inspiring, something we have not seen for along time within this franchise, something to give it a kick-start again, so it was announced that a new director was taking over the reins from Jon Watts who had done a really good job on the previous Spider Man trilogy with Tom Holland.

This time it’s Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm, so perhaps new ideas, a fresh start. Question was – how can Cretton save the Marvel Cinematic Universe from another massive disappointment. I really wanted something special. I grew up with these characters and comics, and I once upon a time really enjoyed the Marvel Cinematic Universe but the last decade or so has really sucked. As I headed on opening night to Wexford Omniplex Cinema I was full of anticipation.

Did it fulfil me? Did I leave the cinema in hope for the future, not just for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for cinema itself. Let’s talk about it!!

We begin with this movie set four years after Doctor Strange putting a spell on Peter Parker. The memory erasing spell, no one knows who Peter Parker is. It happened at the end of Spider Man No Way Home.

Parker (Tom Holland) reprising his role, lives on his own in New York City. MJ (Zendaya) his love interest and his best buddie Ned (Jacob Batalon) have completely forgotten who he is. Parker is struggling with his new life and is totally focused on his work in keeping New York safe, but he is also sneakily following MJ and Ned on social media and while they go through four years of college. Parker builds up the nerve to actually go to a party which he knows MJ and Ned will be at, he gets to talk to them, it’s quite awkward to watch Parker communicate with them both knowing that they have no idea who he is, this is made even harder to watch when Parker has to stand there and watch MJ kiss another man. Poor guy.

This causes Parker a lot of stress and it triggers a disturbing mutation in his spidey self. His senses are ultra heightened, he gets much more aggressive while fighting his foes. His eyes turn black. Parker is struggling as Peter Parker but also as Spider Man. There is also a new threat, a new enemy, a dangerous foe, one he needs to pull himself together for if not the consequences will be devastating. This new threat is an invisible psionic villain who can hijack people’s minds and bodies and is targeting the Department of Damage Control (DODC).

Parker is immune to this threat, which is why Bill Metzger (Tramell Tillman) needs Parker’s help to capture this mysterious being before its too late.

This new threat is the film’s big reveal. At this point it would not be a big spoiler to anyone if the name of this foe was to be mentioned in this review as the world has seen this by now. It has only gone on to make over 2.5 billion dollars at the box office, making it the third biggest movie ever made financially. The foe is none other than Jean Grey (Sadie Sink). Parker defeats her and turns her over to the DODC only to find out that Jean is actually looking for her sister, Sara, who

was kidnapped by DODC for experiments.

It was a nice little twist and meshes nicely with Parker’s overall emotional arc. Spider Man Brand New Day shows Parker truly coming of age. It is interesting to see Parker’s journey from leaving his naive teenage years behind to becoming a mature Spider Man. Holland is on top form throughout this film and gives it his all in his performance. It actually made me tear up a bit when watching Holland’s initial hopeful, then heartbroken expression as he absorbs the painful truth that MJ just does not love him the way he loves her. How could she love him as she has no memory of him. Tom Holland really is our friendly neighbour Spider Man and he can be for as long as he wants. He was born to play this part.

The highlight in this film for me was the inclusion of Frank Castle, aka The Punisher (Jon Berthal). It was fun to watch how Cretton’s decision to make The Punisher character PG, such as when Spider Man covers The Punisher’s mouth with webbing mid swear. I thought it was hilarious. The Punisher turns out to be fairly central to the plot of the film.

He’s great throughout the film. The crowd in the cinema got a great kick out of him.

Then there was my favourite superhero also in it. Bruce Banner/The Hulk. Hulk was a solid choice to offer Parker advice on dealing with his mutation. Things do not go down too well and not before long we are introduced to our green monster friend, Hulk. When Hulk comes knocking you better be ready for some serious smashing. There is a fantastic action sequence between Hulk v Spider Man v The Punisher. It is straight out of a comic and it is without doubt one of my most favourite action sequences out of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Top tier stuff, I just wished it went on even longer. It really was a joy to watch on the big screen.

We also got to see some other villains. Cameo roles from the likes of Tarantula, Tombstone, Ramrod, Boomerang. At least Scorpion got to say a few lines throughout a few battles with Spider Man. This film is more about Peter Parker’s personal journey, it dominates the film and ultimately wins us over. It has been a massive success and has saved the Marvel Cinematic Universe for another day. To see the numbers at the box office and the same for The Odyssey this year has been a great year for cinema. I think it is the best year since 2013 and I am all on for that. I am an advocate for cinema. Cinema must survive, it is burned into our culture and it would be a very sad day if cinema dies.

As a physical media collector, I see first hand what studios are doing with classic movies, they are censoring them, it really is shocking stuff but that’s for another discussion. Then we have streaming and firesticks and dodgy boxes, and all this has an impact on our cinemas. So it’s really refreshing to see these numbers and thank God for that. Spider Man Brand New Day is here to serve as a shining beacon of hope not just for the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also for cinema in general.

This film was good fun and I had a good time watching it. It’s a blast.

Let’s hope Kevin Feige learns from this and makes more superhero films as good as this, instead of the mediocre nonsense of the last decade or more. Well done Spider Man Brand New Day. The Marvel Cinematic Universe lives on for now. This gets a solid 8/10 from me. n

An exciting new project – Wexford Performance Lab for Teens – is Wexford’s training ground for talented performers aged 13–18 ready to take their skills to the next level.

This dynamic programme develops skills in singing, dance, acting, camera work, and professional performance in a fun, supportive, and industry-focused environment. Whether aiming for stage, film, or television – or simply building confidence and performance skills – Wexford Performance Lab is where young performers can shine.

As part of the first module, students will create and star in a professional music video, gaining valuable on-camera experience and confidence.

Training is led by West End star Sharon Clancy and awardwinning choreographer Katelyn Philipin, alongside guest industry professionals who bring real-world insight into today’s performing arts industry.

Classes take place every Wednesday from 7:00–8:00pm at CBS Primary School, Wexford. The term will be starting on the 16th of September with limited places available. Fees are €120 for the term over 10 weeks. This will cover the filming of the participants’ own music video and lots of incredible performance classes in dancing / movement, acting and singing.

Gorey composer inspiring curiosity, imagination and confident musicianship A composer, pianist, and educator from Gorey, Dr Darragh Gilleece, is a Performance Tutor at Maynooth University and serves as a Music Examiner for the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Ireland's leading conservatoire, where he assesses music examinations and recital performances throughout the country.

Darragh studied up to doctoral level at Maynooth University and the University of Vienna, graduating with First-Class Honours and various awards. He also holds an Associate Diploma in Piano Pedagogy from RIAM and a Licentiate Diploma in Piano Performance from Trinity College London.

He completed his PhD in Musicology as the recipient of the prestigious John and Pat Hume Scholarship, with research exploring the piano duets of Franz Schubert and their role in piano pedagogy. His work has been presented at international conferences, including those hosted by the Schubert Institute UK and the Society for Musicology in Ireland.

As a composer, Darragh is passionate about creating imaginative, engaging and educational repertoire for developing pianists. Drawing on from his teaching experience at RIAM and MU, he collaborated with QuietlifeMusic (UK) on piano method books used within teaching programmes. His works have been selected and published by several exam boards, including with the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Universal Music Exams, and Trinity College London.

Darragh is the sole author of First Steps 1 and First Steps 2, published by Forsyth

Publications. Andrew Eales of Pianodao positively reviewed this collection, noting ‘Gilleece’s melodic sense and subtle sense of humour remain an infectious element, and his ability to write idiomatic music for the instrument further elevates his music.’

His most recent publications include a collection of his Jazz/Blues inspired compositions, Jazztopia by Clifton Edition and Spooky Wooky Waltz for Elementary Piano with Alfred Music.

Through his compositions, Darragh seeks to inspire curiosity, imagination and confident musicianship, encouraging young pianists to discover both technical skill and the joy of storytelling through music.

RECENT PUBLICATIONS (2026): First Steps Book 1 and 2 (sole authored), published by Forsyth Publications.

Darragh outlines the origins of this series which lie in his own teaching practice. “I began writing pieces for my students to use, with each piece focusing on a particular style, technique, or musical concept that we were working on. Over time, these pieces developed into a collection, which I organised progressively to support students as they develop their piano skills. My aim was to create a book that combines enjoyment with learning, giving students fun and engaging pieces through which they can explore a variety of musical styles and techniques. As the book has been written with the learner in mind, I aimed to consider factors such as concentration span, hand size, dexterity, reading ability, duet-playing and the developing technical skills of the student.

Pieces include It Takes Two Tango, The Tale of Rumpelstiltskin, Wacky Waltzer and Candy Calypso.

Piece titles include Snap, Stomp and Roll, Agent on the Move, Starry Night and Mean Jazzercise Jam.” Spooky Wooky Waltz (composition for Elementary Piano, published by Alfred Music).

“I am delighted to have recently published my first composition with Alfred Music as part of the Signature Series. My intent behind this piece was to create a spooky but fun piece that would resonate with younger learners and be well suited to lessons around Halloween time!”

In last month’s Slaney News we reported on a young Ferns woman making great strides in the world of classical conducting, so it’s wonderful to see Darragh, another native of Co. Wexford, flourishing in the world of music composition. n

Onam celebration in Enniscorthy The Enniscorthy Indian Association’s Onam Celebration took place on 21st August 2026 in Marshalstown Community Centre with Minister James Browne TD as the chief guest.

Onam is a vibrant celebration of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage, and the event was also an opportunity to celebrate the Indo-Irish cultural connection, friendship, and togetherness that has been built up with the Indian community now very much part of the wider community here in Enniscorthy and Ireland generally. n

A sharing of connections To say that I was deeply honoured to be asked to speak at the launch of SEANI at the aesthetic Lexicon Centre in Dun Laoghaire recently would be an understatement.

To have Enniscorthy Arts & Culture Festival included in this prestigious event – the official launch of South East Asia Network Ireland on the occasion of the 59th anniversary of ASEAN Day, celebrating unity, diversity, friendship, and cooperation was indeed a tribute to the work of the committee here in Enniscorthy contributing to the inclusion of all genres and all cultures in our September Festival based around Culture Night.

To speak alongside Ambassadors from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Cambodia as a special guest, as well as Dun Laoghaire Cathaoirleach Barry Saul, Senator Aubrey McCarthy, and Michael Noble, Chair of the Irish Chamber of Commerce Indonesia, confers massive recognition on our Festival and our town.

making many connections throughout the day and hopefully you will be seeing the fruits of my labours in Enniscorthy in the not too distant future.

In my speech I recalled many of the challenges that faced the Irish in England, America, Australia, Canada and elsewhere and spoke of how they managed to overcome and to integrate into their new homelands whilst holding steadfastly to their own identity and culture encouraging the countries of SEANI to do likewise and offering them any help we can to do it.

I mentioned how Selin Kim made contact with me to have the Cambodian Community included in our St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2024 and since that initial contact she has now become a celebrated member of our Arts & Culture Festival Committee and PRO of Sustainable Enniscorthy, fully encompassing SEANI’s ethos of Connect, Celebrate, Contribute.

And Selin is the main organiser for our Restyle Runway Sustainable Fashion Show on Saturday 19th September from 4-6pm at Enniscorthy Castle as part of this year’s Enniscorthy Arts & Culture Festival.

Common Ground at the

1798 Centre The Lodge daycare centre run by The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, based at Castle Gardens in Enniscorthy, is holding an exhibition of their attendees' art at The National 1798 Rebellion Centre running until 2nd September 2026. The exhibition is called 'Common Ground'.

The wonderful creativity on display has been made possible by the guidance of Sarah Cogley, a well known and respected Co. Wexford artist, and Clare O'Leary, the manager of the centre.

New exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre ‘Memory of a Free Festival’ run in association with Ormston House 8 August – 3 October 2026 at Wexford Arts Centre Wexford Arts Centre in partnership with the Ormston House, is pleased to present Memory of a Free Festival.

The exhibition will run in the lower and upper galleries from Saturday, 8 August, to Saturday, 3 October, 2026.

Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Memory of a Free Festival is a touring exhibition and events programme taking place between March 2026 and March 2027. Conceived by Ormston House, the project responds to the Carnsore Point anti-nuclear festivals that took place in Wexford between 1978 and 1981. Organised by a coalition of groups, the festivals were attended by thousands of people.

These legions were unified by their shared opposition to what would have been the first nuclear power plant to be built in Ireland. In addition to musical entertainment and lectures, the free festivals also included workshops and exhibitions.

Featuring works by Orla Barry, Brian Duggan, and Alanna O’Kelly, the exhibition also includes photos by Derek Speirs and original archival material produced by the Irish Anti-Nuclear Movement. The tour launched with a one-day event at Project Arts Centre on 21 March 2026 including contributions from individuals who were involved in organising or performing at the Carnsore festivals.

Artists Biographies Orla Barry is an artist and shepherd who lived in Brussels for sixteen years but now lives and works on the south coast of rural Wexford. Barry writes, makes video and sound installations, and creates performances. Her work focuses on language, both written and spoken, as well as its visual deconstruction and displacement, via frequently associative techniques. She explores means of communication and on how the complexity of human relationships is able to find a place for itself within this. Fiction, autoethnography, and oral history are blended to reflect on the culture of disconnection from the natural environment, the boundaries of art, and the rural every day.

Brian Duggan trained as a sculptor and now works in video and installation projects. His work seeks to investigate the physical limitations of the immediate environment on the individual. Stress and pressure, ideas of control and where we stand, how we are tied and what binds us, are all continuous references within his artistic practice. Duggan has long concerned himself with questions and difficulties within labour and leisure, history and tradition, politics and popular entertainment. His installations and film work are grounded in material history. A certain theatricality is implemented and, from time to time, results in humorous work that simultaneously makes statements about art, the overlooked individual, and society.

Alanna O’Kelly attended the National College of Art and Design and the Slade School of Art, London. Her practice incorporates sculpture, performance, slide installation and film.

Influenced by feminist politics, O’Kelly explores ideas of the psychic conflicts of our shared history and the continuity of tradition. O’Kelly went to Greenham Common in 1983 to take part in ‘Sounds Around the Base’ that had 30,000 to 50,000 women surrounding the 9-mile perimeter fence of the military base. Her work has featured in major group and solo exhibitions since the 1980s and she represented Ireland at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1996.

There will be a closing event for the Wexford iteration of Memory of a Free Festival on Saturday, 3 October. Further details to be announced.

September is here, and the garden is starting to take on a different feel. The mornings are cooler, the evenings are getting shorter, and some of the summer crops are beginning to slow down. There is still plenty to harvest, but this is also the month to start preparing for what comes next.

Looking back over the growing season, it has certainly had its ups and downs. We started with far too much rain, which delayed planting, followed by a spell of very warm weather that brought its own problems.

There have been crops I've lost and plenty of mistakes along the way, but there have also been some great harvests.

That's gardening for you, and now it's time to get on with the next part of the season.

One of the main jobs for September is keeping on top of the harvest. There can still be plenty of tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, and beans coming from the garden, so keep picking regularly. Leaving mature crops on the plant for too long can slow down further production, and there is nothing worse than discovering a courgette has somehow turned into a marrow overnight.

The greenhouse will need a little more attention as the month goes on too. Keep harvesting and remove any plants that have completely finished producing. Don't be too quick to shut everything up just be-

Mark describes himself very much as a ‘hobby gardener’ who is not academically trained in horticulture. He started planting with very little knowledge a few years ago and that knowledge has now ‘mushroomed’! Mark loves sharing his passion for growing with our readers. cause autumn has arrived. On bright days, temperatures can still rise surprisingly quickly inside a greenhouse, so keep using the ventilation when needed.

September is also a good time to start clearing beds as crops finish. Remove old plants, pull out weeds and give the soil a chance to breathe. If you have healthy plant material, it can go onto the compost heap, but anything showing signs of disease is better disposed of elsewhere. Once a bed is cleared, add a layer of good compost or some seaweed granules or pellets. There is no need to turn the whole garden upside down.

A simple top dressing will give the soil something to work with over the coming months.

If you've got empty space, don't automatically leave it bare. Garlic is one of the crops worth getting started as autumn approaches. Plant individual cloves into well-drained soil with the pointed end facing upwards, leaving enough room for the bulbs to develop. They will spend the winter establishing themselves and then get going again in spring.

There is also still time for another sowing of spinach. After my earlier attempt bolted in the summer heat, I'm much happier trying it now. The cooler conditions are far more suitable and, with a bit of luck, I'll get a good supply of leaves later in the year.

The temptation in September is to think the garden is winding down, but I don't see it that way. There is still plenty happening, just in a different way. The big rush of spring and summer has passed, and now it's about harvesting what you've grown, clearing what has finished and giving the garden a good foundation for the months ahead.

September is a good month for thinking about the soil as much as the plants. If you've been growing in the same beds all summer, adding some seaweed granules or pellets now is a simple way of giving the soil a boost before the colder months.

They are easy to use and can be worked into the surface of the soil before planting or left to break down gradually. Even if you don't plant anything else this year, giving the beds some attention now will make life easier when spring comes around.

For me, this is when I start looking at the garden with next year in mind. I notice the things that worked well, the spaces that didn't and, of course, the areas where I managed to squeeze far too many plants into one bed. I'll probably do exactly the same thing again next year, but at least I'll know what I'm doing wrong.

It is also worth keeping an eye on fallen leaves. Rather than seeing them as another job to get rid of, collect them and start making leaf mould. It takes time, but leaves break down into a fantastic soil conditioner. A simple pile or a wire container in a corner of the garden is all you need.

For now, though, there is still plenty to enjoy. September may mark the beginning of autumn, but the growing season isn't finished yet.

There are crops to harvest, seeds to sow and soil to prepare, so there is no excuse for putting the gardening gloves away just yet.n

Enniscorthy farmers Ellen and JP Furlong have been recognised among Ireland’s leading farmer suppliers after winning the Irish Country Meats Supplier of the Year award at the inaugural 2026 Farmer Recognition Awards, presented at the Tullamore Show on Sunday, 9th August.

The awards recognise farmer suppliers who have demonstrated excellence across beef, dairy beef, dairy steer, organic and lamb supply categories, reflecting the quality, consistency and commitment of suppliers to ABP Ireland and Irish Country Meats.

Winners were selected across ten award categories, with ABP Ireland awards recognising best in class beef, lamb and organic production.

Lots on at the Allotments Noemi Louro, Community Events Coordinator at Enniscorthy Community Allotments, keeps us posted with developments at the Allotments...

We have had some good mornings at the allotment this year.

Sunday the 16th August belongs in a category of its own.

We dressed the allotments in pink for Breast Cancer Ireland.

There were sandwiches and cakes, a face-painting station by @cozy_paint, surrounded by children who had very strong opinions about what they wanted on their faces, a plant sale, and a raffle that generated the sort of excitement usually reserved for much larger occasions. By the time the morning was done, we had raised €1,082. Every cent goes directly to the charity. We are grateful to the businesses who made the raffle possible: Tommy Williamson, Beechdale Garden Centre, Bolgers, Smiths, and Meraki. And we are grateful, more than we can easily say, to everyone who came. Cancer is not an abstract cause. It touches people we know. Mornings like this one are how we answer that.

August gave us other things worth holding on to. Our first Community Day brought members together to clear the site of weeds, and the turnout said everything about the spirit of this place. The judging panel for Ireland's Age Friendly Recognition

also visited us, and some of our members marked the occasion with a song. From 160 groups nationwide, we have been shortlisted to 36, with the final ceremony taking place at the Strand Hotel in Limerick this October. That Enniscorthy Community Allotments is part of that conversation is something worth celebrating.

On the 12th, we gathered for our Annual General Meeting, pausing first at the entrance to watch the solar eclipse. There is something quietly right about a group of growers stopping to look up at the sky. The meeting that followed brought some changes to the committee, and we look forward to sharing more in the months ahead.

The weather this August has been its own kind of teacher. Unpredictable, difficult, sometimes unkind to the crops. And yet the rainwater harvesting system at the tunnel has held steady throughout, a reminder that the choices we make in better times carry us through the harder ones. The cucumbers have given more than anyone can use. The mushroom beds, tended by members who came to our workshop earlier in the year, have delivered on their quiet promise.

DIARY FOR SEPTEMBER Fourteen years ago today my nephew, a 20-year-old on holidays, had a catastrophic injury that would change the course of his life as he knew it. He was paralysed from the neck down, flown from the beach to the hospital by helicopter, operated on and after ten days flown home to Ireland.

He spent a few weeks in the Mater Hospital and was then transferred to the Rehab in Dun Laoghaire which became home for him for the next nine months. He was as determined as you could get and worked hard each day with the dedicated staff of nurses doctors and OTs When he went in he had no use of his arms at all.

Through relentless hours of painstaking work he learned to use those arms again to feed himself and steer his wheelchair. I remember a leaflet for a fundraiser for him and the title of the leaflet was, 'How long does it take to put on your hoodie?'... something most of us take for granted and is done in ten seconds took Jack ten minutes to do.

The simple things that we take for granted every day now became a major ordeal for him and all those young people in the ward alongside him.

He is still a young man and he has transformed a seemingly devastating accident to a shining light for a whole generation. The apt quote is '10% in life is what happens to you... 90% is how you deal with it.’ As Jack says, 'Everyone has their own sh**e to deal with, mine is just a bit more obvious than most others!!’

And it's true, we all have challenges to deal with, learning from them is the key.

It gave me a new perspective on what we can be grateful for each and every day.

Inspiring us to be better and rise above the weighty woes is what Jack does each day.

KIA EV2 REVIEW The Kia EV2 is one of the most anticipated new electric cars to arrive in Ireland this year. Its compact size, relatively affordable starting price, and choice of two battery sizes give it all the ingredients needed to appeal to canny Irish buyers looking to make the switch to electric.

The entry-level 42kWh version has a claimed range of 317km and starts at €28,660, while the 61kWh Long

Range model can travel up to 453km on a charge, with prices starting at €31,940.

That 453km figure is particularly impressive for a car of this size and makes the EV2 one of the longestrange models in its class.

There are Air, Earth, GT Line, and GT Line Plus trim levels. The car tested here is arguably the sweet spot for the Irish market: the 61kWh battery in Earth specification, priced at €33,810, and already proving popular.

The EV2 slots into Kia's electric range below the bestselling EV3 so is a little more compact in size but carries a lot of the same design. But where the EV3 is relatively serious, the EV2 has a sense of fun about it.

The distinctive front and rear lighting give it plenty of character. Alloy wheels are standard, with Earth versions getting an 18-inch set.

Despite its compact dimensions, the EV2 would work quite well as a small family car. It has a 362-litre boot, which on paper is smaller than rivals such as the Ford Puma

Slaney moToring Gen-E, Renault 4 and forthcoming Skoda Epiq. But in reality, the Kia’s boot is deep and a practical shape with space underneath for charging cables and even a small storage tray under the bonnet.

Space in the back is also generous. Ireland gets the five-seat version with a conventional rear bench and three seatbelts, rather than the four-seat configuration offered in some markets.

Legroom is also good for a small SUV and the EV2 feels bigger than the Renault 4 for instance.

There are Isofix points on the outer seats and the rear doors open wide enough to get child seats in.

Inside, there is plenty of technology borrowed from the brand’s larger cars, including a full digital driver display and touchscreen infotainment system with modern graphics, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Importantly, Kia has retained plenty of physical controls. That means you do not have to dig through menus every time you want to adjust something as simple as the climate control. There are also useful features like battery preconditioning that can make charging stops quicker.

The Earth interior is another area where the designers seem to have had some fun. Lime green accents and little messages hidden around the cabin like 'have a nice day' add

to adjust the strength of regenerative braking.

On the road, the new EV2 is not quite as fun to drive as a Ford Puma Gen-E or Renault 4, but it's smooth, predictable and easy to drive, so there's not much to complain about at all.

personality, while the combination of cloth and synthetic leather upholstery gives the seats a pleasant, soft finish.

There is quite a lot of grey plastic, and the cabin is not quite as stylish or chic as that of the Renault 4. But at this price point, the EV2 still gets a lot of things right like practicality, battery and range.

Standard equipment includes heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and dual-zone climate control, while Earth specification adds features such as ambient lighting and wireless smartphone charging.

The EV2’s electric motor produces 135hp and takes the car from 0100km/h in 9.5 seconds. It is not designed to be a hot hatch, but it feels perfectly adequate for everyday driving.

There are Normal, Eco, Sport and Snow driving modes, while paddles behind the steering wheel allow you

Comfort is where the Kia really impresses. It has been developed specifically for Europe and tuned for European roads, and Kia has invested in good insulation, including the carpets, acoustic glass and even the choice of tyres, with the aim of keeping road and tyre noise down. For this reason, it makes a decent motorway companion on long drives. The larger battery version is ideal if you do plan to do longer trips and has good real-world battery range for a small car.

When it comes to charging, a 1080% battery top-up will take about 30 minutes, while there's also AC charging up to 11kW. Long-range models from Earth trim upwards also offer vehicle-to-load capability, adding useful flexibility for owners who want to get more from their car and battery.

To sum it up, the Kia EV2 is a very welcome addition to Kia’s expanding electric range. At a time when EV sales in Ireland are really gaining momentum, it's a good all-rounder and offers value for money if you're in the market for a small electric car. n

Official opening of Enniscorthy Golf Club’s redeveloped greens Enniscorthy Golf Club was delighted to recently officially mark the opening of its redeveloped 2nd and 14th greens.

Work began last September and was completed by late October. The greens remained closed until May to allow them the time needed to establish properly, and the members all agree they were worth the wait.

The project was made possible through funding of €146,750 from the Community Sports Facilities Fund. This significant investment has delivered two superb, modern, sand-based greens and represents another important step in the continued development of the course.

Captain Larry O’Connor welcomed those in attendance at the opening and thanked everyone who helped bring the project from its early planning stages through to completion.

A special thank you was extended to Murty Dempsey and the Course Committee, PJ Dempsey and the greenkeeping team, Garry Flood and the team at Garry Flood Landscaping, and Jeff Lynch of RE Golf Design. Their hard work, expertise, and attention to detail are clear to see in the finished greens. The members were thanked for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out.

The club was also delighted to welcome George Lawlor TD and Councillor Aidan Browne and thanked both for joining them on the day, and for supporting Enniscorthy Golf Club and the local community.

It was a proud day for Enniscorthy Golf Club and another important step forward for the club.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Following the official opening of its redeveloped greens, the club was delighted last month to host the Irish Senior Men’s and Women’s Close over the duration of one week. From the first tee shot to the final round, the atmosphere around the club was brilliant, and club members thoroughly enjoyed welcoming players, supporters, and everyone involved.

A spokesperson said: “We were especially delighted to hear so many wonderful comments about the course. We are incredibly proud of how it presented, and that is down to a huge amount of work behind the scenes. Thank you to all of our volunteers and staff, and particularly to our greenkeeping team. Their hard work, care, and dedication to the course throughout the year is what allows it to be presented to this standard.” n

24-year-old Enniscorthy native and Ireland international Festy Ebosele has completed a move to newly-promoted Turkish side Erzurumspor making the switch from Super Lig rivals Istanbul Basaksehir, who he joined in January 2025, making 27 appearances across the past year and a half. n

Last month’s goal for Wexford FC on her senior debut made Mia Whelan the youngest goal scorer ever in League of Ireland history – men’s or women’s, at just 15 years old. It will be fascinating to see Mia's football career unfold over the next few years. n

Table tennis for health Table tennis for Health is an initiative to introduce table tennis to individuals who have a chronic health or neurological condition. Table Tennis Ireland is introducing this programme in a number of counties and already with success recorded in south Wexford.

The sessions run over a period of 10 weeks with a qualified coach and participants will learn the basic skills of table tennis, improve hand-eye co-ordination and overall well-being in a fun and relaxed environment, where they will have an opportunity to meet and connect with others in their community. Light refreshments will be provided during the sessions.

When: Starting Thursday 10th September until Thursday 12th November 2026.

Memorial Wall unveiled at Enniscorthy Greyhound Track On 17th August the Showgrounds in Enniscorthy was packed for a night of remembrance to remember all those who have passed through the doors of Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium helping to create the wonderful facility Enniscorthy has today, and for the formal launch of the Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium Memorial Wall.

Plaques for the wall can still be purchased by calling the track on 087 489 3859 and all money raised will go towards the Oak Ward, St John’s Community Hospital, Enniscorthy.

Slaney hiSTory Slaney aD & heriTage Under the auspices of the IrelandNewfoundland Connections, the local Enniscorthy committee was delighted to welcome 44 guests on a three-day visit to our town in August.

As part of a Festival running since 2005, the visitors spent three days in Enniscorthy, three days in Carrig-on-Suir, and three days in Ring, Co. Waterford, exploring the areas of the South East where their ancestors emigrated from – Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford, and South Tipperary.

The Enniscorthy Committee under Chairman Tom Boland pulled out all the stops to give the Newfoundlanders a flavour of Enniscorthy and Wexford to take home with them to encourage others to visit our wonderful town and county.

Our friends from across the pond were delighted with their tour on the roof of Enniscorthy Castle in glorious early morning sunshine with excellent views of our ancient town and the iconic Vinegar Hill.

The National 1798 Centre blew them away completely with many of them moved to shedding tears during the recreation of the battle of Vinegar Hill on 21st June 1798.

Newfoundlanders visit Enniscorthy Words & pics by Maria Nolan This being particularly poignant for them as many who escaped death on the Hill eventually made their way to Newfoundland where they immediately set about recruiting United Irishmen for a Rising in St. John’s in 1801, that’s how close our shared history is and we have been told that they may have unearthed a pikeman’s grave from that period at St. John’s which we hope to visit and validate its authenticity in 2027.

Later that evening, Enniscorthy excelled itself with a most delicious meal at the IFA Centre provided by caterer Jimmy Kennedy, for seventy-four invited guests including Minister James Browne TD, Cathaoirleach Pat Kehoe, Leas Cathaoirleach John O’Rourke, Cllr Trish Byrne, and Heritage Officer Colm Moriarity who were later magnificently entertained by Enniscorthy Comhaltas Branch, Celtic Roots, Le Cheile, Sean Nos Dancers, and a plethora of local singers raising the roof along with The Islanders, from Newfoundland.

Leaving Enniscorthy, the group made its way to Boolavogue and enjoyed a visit to the Fr. Murphy Centre before heading to Oulart Hill where historian Brian Cleary assisted by Breda Jacob gave a most detailed account of the battle there on 27th May 1798.

A truly wonderful night of music, song, dance, talent, and shared culture.

The group also spent some free time in Wexford town before returning to Enniscorthy for their evening meal at The Bailey which again was first class, not a single complaint from the forty-four of them.

Out then to Redmonds of Scarawalsh for a good old-fashioned session with local and Newfoundland musicians and singers entertaining well into the night.

The Newfoundland group The Islanders were delighted with the gig saying that it has always been their dream to play in an Irish pub.

On leaving Enniscorthy they travelled on to Carrig-on-Suir and then Ring, Co. Waterford, where they were treated with the same warmth and hospitality.

The Enniscorthy Committee would like to extend its most sincere thanks to all the families who hosted our Newfoundland guests – your hospitality was greatly applauded and appreciated.

103-year-old Enniscorthy woman helps launch exhibition 'The Story of Us' is a Free Exhibition relating to the 1926 Census which was on display in Wexford County Council, Carricklawn, Wexford, from 4 – 21 August 2026.

Elizabeth 'Dote' O'Neill from Castledockrell, Enniscorthy, who is 103 years old, was around at the time of that census and was around, with her nephew Timmy Malone, to help launch the Wexford hosting of the exhibition which reveals what life was like in 1926: in towns and cities, across rural communities and islands, from crowded urban tenements to the mansions of the aristocracy.

Using contemporary documents and photographs, audio‑visual displays and — at its heart — the census returns themselves, the exhibition presented a vivid portrait of Ireland a century ago. Visitors encountered stories of work and daily life, language and culture, sport and entertainment, religion, gender and the social realities of a newly independent state.

A rare look at historic Clonmines Words & pics by Maria Nolan

I have often marvelled from a distance at the medieval monuments that adorn like a string of ancient pearls the quay of Bannow Bay in the Barony of Shelburne, so I jumped at the chance to view them up close and personal when Marguerite Furlong rang to tell me about an Open Day to be held on the Codd farm at Clonmines on Saturday 29th August.

Marguerite has a family connection to the Codds who have owned the lands at Clonmines since the 1840s and were delighted to have me attend in medieval costume.

The town of Clonmines was established as a port in the 13th century by that famous Norman knight William Marshall, who as we all know built the town of New Ross, but found Clonmines more accessible and easier to defend.

It was a pleasure and a privilege to be given the opportunity to visit this mystic site with ruins of four castles and three churches – one an Augustinian Abbey.

Outside Black Castle or Fitzhenry Castle, Domini Codd told the very large attendance that the site was first settled by the Vikings but it was during the era of the Normans that the area began to grow and flourish under the guidance of course of William Marshall, that remarkable Norman who married Isobel de Clare, the daughter of the alliance between Aoife McMurrough of Leinster, daughter of Diarmuid McMurrough, and Richard de Clare, the Cambro Norman, better known as Strongbow.

Both William and Isobel being hugely influential on our Wexford heritage.

Domini pointed out the conservation works carried out on Black Castle with the help of the Heritage Council and Wexford County Council, more necessary work has been done to conserve the Abbey, and further works have been identified and prioritised for future action.

Clonmines is on private land but it is vitally important that these conservation works continue so that future generations can enjoy this truly ancient and magical site that is so much part of our heritage here in Wexford.

Thank you most sincerely to Domini and the Codd family for sharing this with us and the very large attendance, despite the inclement weather conditions, is indeed a testament to the absorbing interest there is in the ancient town of Clonmines.

Domini encouraged all to explore and photograph and can I once again express my thanks to the Codd family for the wonderful opportunity to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors. n

Enniscorthy Credit Union is continuing its journey towards a greener future and expanding its sustainability efforts with the introduction of new WEEE Ireland battery recycling boxes across its three offices in Abbey Square, Ballymurn and Taghmon, making it easier than ever for members, staff, and the local community to recycle their used household batteries responsibly.

From batteries used in remote controls to those found in old clocks, cameras, toys, and other everyday items, the new collection points offer a simple and convenient way to keep batteries out of general waste and ensure valuable materials can be recycled.

The initiative is another small step in Enniscorthy Credit Union’s commitment to making sustainability part of everyday life and follows the recent installation of solar panels at their Abbey Square offices. The panels are helping the local Credit Union harness renewable energy and reduce its reliance on traditional energy sources.

The Green Committee at Enniscorthy Credit Union says sustainability is really about looking at what small choices we can make every day both at home and in the workplace. “By making it easier for our members and staff to recycle their used batteries, we are taking another small but important step towards greener living and a more sustainable community. We are delighted to introduce these battery recycling boxes across our three offices; Abbey Square, Ballymurn, and Taghmon, and hope that this simple step can help our staff and members make a small but achievable difference.”

Members are encouraged to bring their used household batteries to their local Enniscorthy Credit Union office and place them in the dedicated WEEE recycling boxes. n

First ever Enniscorthy biodiversity and heritage tour by kayak!

There was a wonderful turnout last month for Enniscorthy Tidy Town’s first-ever kayaking biodiversity and heritage tour with ecologist Faith Wilson who guided the participants through the wonderful flora and fauna of the River Slaney and Boro. The group of 20 set off on this two-hour tour from Edermine with thanks to gopaddle.ie The event was made possible thanks to River Basin Management Service and Wexford Co. Council’s biodiversity section.

Wexford County Council is reminding the public that the fixed payment litter fine will increase from €150 to €250 from 1st September 2026.

The Council encourages everyone to dispose of litter responsibly and to help keep Wexford’s streets, beaches, towns, and public spaces clean. n

Water pollution in Courtown Sinn Féin TD for Wicklow-Wexford Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has said pollution in Courtown should be taken seriously and that funding should not be a barrier. He was commenting on reports of a pink substance flowing from a pipe into Courtown Harbour.

"I was contacted by members of the Courtown community when this matter came to light, and I immediately contacted Wexford County Council's Environment Section to investigate it as a matter of urgency.

“In addition, the Council has arranged to take weekly samples from the two surface water pipes. If resources allow in September 2026, it is intended to commence Phase One of a surface water drainage cross-connection survey in Courtown, beginning in the area where the pink discharge was reported."

“The Council informed me by letter that tests were carried out on 13th July and again on 16th July, and that nothing was found. The response indicated that this was the end of the matter.

Deputy Ó Súilleabháin said he received a reply from the Council after asking them again to investigate further, stating:

Deputy Ó Súilleabháin continued: “I am pleased to hear that the Council intends to undertake a surface water drainage survey, but, as they state, it all depends on resources. This is simply not good enough and again highlights how under-resourced local authorities are and how the government is failing them.

“This was not acceptable, as there was photographic evidence of pink discharge from the pipe. It may not have appeared on the days the tests were carried out, but that does not mean pollution was not flowing into Courtown Harbour on other days."

"The Senior Engineer has advised that two recent inspections were carried out by our Environment Technician in Courtown on 13 July 2026, when clean surface water was observed discharging from the pipe. The pipe was inspected again on 16 July 2026.

“We need to take water pollution seriously, and adequate funding should be made available to the Council. I have written to the Minister, urging him to ensure that Wexford County Council receives the funding required to fully investigate this issue in Courtown." n

Natural flood management A lecture on "Natural Flood Management" will be given by Professor Mary Bourke of Trinity College Dublin, at 8pm on Thursday, 3rd September, at Wexford Wildfowl Reserve.

Wexford Naturalists Field Club (WNFC) hosts indoor lectures at 8pm on the first Thursday of each month in The Pumphouse at Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. Non-members of the Club are welcome. Admission for non-members is €5 which includes light refreshments. U18s must be accompanied by an adult.
