Crossnore faced many challenges during 2020: COVID-19, community unrest, changes in the child welfare system, and more. Our staff rose to meet each challenge, and more importantly, so did the children and families we serve. Your generous gifts in 2020 helped us expand our service areas to include tele-health therapy sessions and virtual foster family training sessions. Innovative solutions like these keep children and families connected to vital services in their communities.

We also had a successful fundraising year in 2020, thanks to you. However, the work does not end. There are more children and families every day who need our help. Your gifts ensure Crossnore services continue, we are able to innovate where needed, and we achieve successful outcomes for children. FOSTER HOMES Data compiled by Charlene Johnson, Director of Foster Home Licensing & Training

The mission of our Foster Care Licensing & Training program is to recruit and train singlefamily foster homes and therapeutic foster homes for foster care licensure. Families interested in providing a foster home or a forever home for children in need will receive training, a home study, and ongoing monthly support throughout the foster care licensing process and beyond. Currently, we are unable to care for more than 60 children per month due to the lack of foster homes. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a foster family, contact Charlene Johnson at cjohnson@crossore.org.

Children in foster care may live in a cottage on one of Crossnore's campuses or in a community-based foster home. Referrals for foster care come from Departments of Social Services when an investigation indicates that a child or children cannot safely live in their home. Our goal at Crossnore is to provide a safe and loving home during this time, while families work to correct the concerns in the home. Reuniting a child with their biological family is always the goal of foster care. When that can't happen safely, permanency is achieved through kinship placements or adoption.

INCLUSION Though 2020 was certainly challenging with the spread of COVID-19, America was moved to confront another pandemic with new urgency— racial injustice. Sadness, devastation, anger, and protests followed the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others. With the social awareness and focus that followed these deaths, we turned the lens to our own organization to examine and pursue ways that we could become a truly anti-racist organization. One definition of anti-racism, especially as it pertains to an organization of individuals, says, “Anti-racism is the active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices, and attitudes, so that power is redistributed and shared equitably.”1 Certainly, this is a huge task, and one not to be taken lightly. As we look closely at our relationships, leadership, structure, policies, procedures, and more, we fully realize that antiracism work is long, hard, often emotional, and yet completely worth it.

Going forward, we hope to create more than just “safe spaces.” We want to build “brave spaces” to be who we truly are, respect and value the differences in one another, and most importantly, serve ALL children, created in the image of God— each with equal beauty, depth, and value—to the absolute best of our abilities. We look forward, through humble and ready eyes, to doing the hard work of fighting racism—individually, organizationally, and systemically—to protect and champion North Carolina’s most vulnerable individuals, our children.

Our first task was to create our Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-racism Steering Committee (IDEA). INNOVATION Crossnore School & Children's Home is pleased to announce the receipt of a $1.3M gift from Elizabeth M. Strickland, a longtime resident of Winston-Salem, NC.* This gift will be used to pilot an evidence-based program providing prevention services to support families and prevent children being removed from their homes or entering Department of Social Services custody. Mrs. Strickland’s gift will fund the pilot program for its first year. “Betty Strickland has long been a supporter of the Winston-Salem community and her generous gift will serve families in the Triad for generations to come,” said Brett Loftis, Crossnore’s Chief Executive Officer. With the passing of the Families First Prevention Services Act, early intervention and prevention programs have taken on a greater importance in the child welfare system. Crossnore will implement HOMEBUILDERS® Family Preservation, which is a nationally-known and evidence-based program. This program provides in-home crisis intervention, counseling, and life skills education for families whose children are at imminent risk of being removed from the home. Crossnore expects to initially create four to five new staff positions in Winston-Salem, with more teams planned in the future. These teams will work with local Departments of Social Services to identify and serve families who need this support. Social Services, said, “Forsyth County Department of Social Services truly values the presence of Crossnore School & Children’s Home. They continue to strengthen our community with various evidence-based services and advocacy for a system of care development for children and families. The HOMEBUILDERS® Family Preservation program

holds a favorable rating with the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare in the areas of family stabilization, interventions for neglect, post-permanency support, and reunification. The vast service provision of the HOMEBUILDERS® model will be an asset to our community. True promotion of safety, well-being, and permanency will be supported by this service. From my perspective, strengthening families is the utmost priority and Crossnore stands with us as a committed community partner.” The goal of the HOMEBUILDERS® program is to remove the risk of abuse and neglect from a family situation, rather than removing the child from the home. With the implementation of this program, Crossnore staff will work with families to help them learn new behaviors and make better choices for their children. Sarah Norris, Chief Program Officer at Crossnore, said, “This generous donation is such a blessing for Crossnore and the Winston-Salem community. We will expand our service array to support families during their time of need. This program ensures safety for children so they may remain at home while their families work through their difficulties.”
