2016 was another historic year for Crossnore School & Children’s Home as our merger was completed, and our services were integrated across campuses in Crossnore, NC and Winston-Salem, NC.

Your donations enabled us to open more cottages on both campuses, and we are currently providing a home for nearly 130 children in residential group foster care. Our foster care and adoptions program has expanded into the mountain counties and five more families are currently in training to become licensed foster families. Our Aftercare team is supporting more than 30 young adults who are working to transition successfully into adulthood. We have eight seniors in the Class of 2017 who are currently receiving college acceptance letters and making plans for the future. Yet, with all the good your generosity is helping us accomplish, the need is still great. There are now nearly 11,000 children in foster care in North Carolina. We have to grow in order to help meet this growing need. That’s why your gifts are so important to us and to the children we serve. Every prayer prayed, every dollar given, every in-kind gift such as a bed in a bag or a Christmas gift, and every hour of volunteer time help our children find their way back to being children again.

Jayna Ennis and Alyssia Dula are 2016 graduates of Marjorie Williams Academy. They both entered the Miracle Scholars program, live in Phillips House in Spruce Pine, NC, and attend Mayland Community College. Jayna and Alyssia are both recipients of the Frank Tedder Roberts Memorial Scholarship which helps them purchase books and school supplies, as well as helping with a portion of their living expenses. Jayna is seeking an associate's degree in liberal arts. She then plans to transfer to a 4-year university for a bachelor's degree in secondary education. Her goal is to teach high school math. Jayna said that she may even come back to Crossnore one day and teach. Alyssia is also seeking an associate's degree in liberal arts at Mayland. From there, Alyssia wants to go to AB Tech in Asheville, where they have an excellent veterinary tech program. Alyssia hopes to get her vet tech certification and then work at an animal hospital. She said she will probably either work in Asheville or come back to this area. Since 2009, Dr. Richard Dymmel has been delivering motorized riding vehicles for the children on the Crossnore campus. Dr. Dymmel purchases used Power Wheels and other motorized vehicles and refurbishes them to sell or donate. To date, he has given us more than 20 vehicles for our kids to enjoy.

The latest delivery came last summer, as Dr. Dymmel and his wife, Marie, drove onto campus pulling a trailer with four new-to-us vehicles plus extra batteries. They also brought toys for the cottages and to stock in the Birdcage. You can imagine the delight on a child’s face when a Jeep or Barbie convertible shows up at their cottage. And, then that child gets to drive it! We offer a special thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Richard Dymmel for their unique gift.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT MAIME MURPHY After growing up in Alabama until the age of seven, Maime Murphy moved to Crossnore School & Children's Home shortly after the death of her mother. In the prior year, Maime had attended more than three schools and her academics had suffered as a result. Upon her arrival in WinstonSalem, Maime was welcomed into Duke Cottage and began attending Kingswood School. Her educational performance improved as she received encouragement from staff and Wake Forest University student-volunteers. At Crossnore, Maime received unique opportunities to enhance her learning inside the classroom and after school as well. During her childhood and teenage years, Maime's favorite activities included riding horses at the Farm, climbing the ropes course, and attending weekly chapel services. It was at Woosley Chapel, at the age of 14 when she felt the call to ministry that set her future into motion. With this dream in sight, Maime completed her degree in Youth Ministry at Lee University, followed by a Masters of Divinity at Wake Forest University. Maime currently teaches Bible classes at Salem Academy and works with Parkway United Church of Christ. Her work at Parkway includes preaching, planning intergenerational events, and training teachers. Maime says her time spent at Crossnore School & Children's Home saved and restored her, and it gave her rich cultural experiences throughout her youth, as well as vital lifelong contacts and memories.

We are incredibly grateful for an organization that believes supporting the community is vital to making a difference. BB&T has an annual Lighthouse Project that allows a department to financially support an organization in a variety of ways. In 2016, that meant helping us achieve our goals of providing a safe place for our children and an inviting as well as aesthetically uplifting cottage to call home. "They were a tremendous help to us," said Kimberly King, Director of Community Outreach. One group worked on Tise Cottage by building a retaining wall and planter at the main entrance of the cottage and completing landscaping around the building. Another group played a major role in making Fresh Fest a day packed full of fun activities from the kids' corn box and face painting to rubber duck racing and more. This group rolled up their sleeves to put up tents before the event, monitored parking, and even drove the Cow Train for the duration of the festivities. We offer a special thank you to BB&T for their hard work on our Winston-Salem campus and for their continuing support of our community.

Crossnore Fine Arts Gallery features local and regional painters, sculptors, and fine craftspersons whose works are displayed and sold in the Gallery. Proceeds from the Gallery support the Stepping Stones program helping high school students transition into young adulthood. Crossnore Fine Arts Gallery is the exclusive dealer of Ann Melton pewter designs and sculpture, and one of only two galleries featuring Craven Pottery.

Mrs. Betsy Isley wanted to honor her mother's memory on the Crossnore campus and chose to do so with an avenue for reading and learning. In 2016, the Elizabeth McAshan Crawford Literacy Room was opened at Marjorie Williams Academy. Specifically geared towards young learners, the Literacy Room has resources to stimulate and support the students' learning. Mrs. Isley said, "My mom, never a teaching professional, was keenly interested in the needs of children and how they so readily absorb all things when they are quite young. Dealing with children from many circumstances serves to reinforce the idea that each child deserves opportunities and encouragement to learn and participate (thus, gaining empowerment) as their skills grow. What children are capable of is truly amazing if given the chance." The room is currently outfitted with reading materials for every level of young reader. The next plan is to add 10 to 12 iPads to the Literacy Room to enhance learning.

RESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP LUIS ARAUZ Luis Arauz is a young man who came to Crossnore from Guatemala City in 2013. He had lived a rough and tumble life and never imagined the life he lives today. Luis aged out of foster care at age 18, but thanks to generous donors who make our residential scholarships possible, Luis was able to remain at Crossnore. A senior in high school, Luis will graduate in June, and has already received acceptance letters to Lees-McRae College and Mayland Community College. Luis credits his success to the support he has received from the Crossnore family.

HOMECOMING Homecoming on the Winston-Salem campus is held each year in May. The Alumni Association has their annual business meeting, a memorial is held for family who have passed, and lots of meals and hugs are shared. Alumni enjoy campus tours and updates on all the new happenings.
