mission

is to provide a Christian sanctuary of hope and healing where students in need rise above their circumstances and excel both in school and in life.

My favorite thing about Crossnore is love and opportunities.

Residential Survey Comments Twice a year, in May and November, residential children between the ages of 5 and 21 are asked to complete a survey regarding their experience at The Crossnore School. Responses help administrators improve the living and learning environment on campus. The most recent survey, conducted in November 2014, was completed by 69 students.

91% feel safe in the cottage in which they live. 90% feel that their thoughts, feelings and opinions

are valued by their Case Manager.

94%

feel that they have established and maintain a positive relationship with their Counselor.

My favorite thing about Crossnore is the basketball team and how I always have somebody to talk to if I have a problem. My favorite thing about Crossnore is being able to have a college education after high school.

I just want to say thanks for changing my life because if I didn’t come here, I would probably be in Juvenile.

Student Spotlight Campaign Update Planned Giving Martha Guy Society Unrestricted Giving Students/Finances Introductions Celebrate Generosity The Sloop Society Leadership Team

Every healthy child must learn how to embrace change and expand his horizons in order to grow into his full potential. The same is true for organizations. The Crossnore School experienced a year of great growth and expanded horizons in 2014. After successfully celebrating our centennial year in 2013, we ushered in a New Year with visions of an expanded campus and reaching more children in need. With a million dollar boost from Donna and Ken Lewis, we expanded our Centennial Campaign to include a $7 million capital component. Our dream was to raise enough money to build a new high school and three new cottages. Today, that dream is coming true! We are so thrilled that the generosity of Marjorie and Leonard Williams allowed us to break ground on our new high school building last May and to rename our charter school the Marjorie Williams Academy. All of the students at the Williams Academy are anxiously awaiting the opening of the new high school in fall 2015.

Also, in 2014 we served more children than ever before. All 85 residential beds were full all year. Our hardest conversations on campus concern the approximately 200 children that we have turned away in 2014 because of lack of space. However, there is great news for the children that need our services. The generous support from the donors listed in this report has given us the confidence to move forward with the three new cottages that comprise the Young Children’s Village. We pray that 2015 will be the year that we celebrate the successful completion of our $20 million Centennial Campaign, and that we will continue our goal to be a national model for education and health for children in foster care.

n 2008, The Crossnore School began the process of adopting the Sanctuary Model of Care. The Sanctuary Model is a treatment and organizational framework for creating trauma-informed communities. This 3-year implementation process consisted of a lengthy self-study and a two-day site visit. Certification was achieved in 2011. Today, The Crossnore School is one of 100 programs nationally and internationally where the Sanctuary Model is applied. Recertification happens every three years, and in October 2014, Maxine Reddy of the ANDRUS Sanctuary Institute and Michael Selep, peer evaluator from Holy Family Institute, evaluated The Crossnore School for successful implementation of the Sanctuary Model. The evaluation included interviews with staff and children, program observations and document review.

Ben Long Fresco in the Sloop Chapel If you have visited Miracle Grounds Coffee Shop on The Crossnore School campus, you may have met Alex Taylor. In between his Academy school work, playing basketball for the Falcons, volunteering in the community and completing college applications, Alex serves as the assistant manager of Miracle Grounds. The Crossnore School has provided Alex with a safe, healthy community to learn and grow. In 2013, at just 16 years of age, Alex petitioned the Court to declare him a legal adult. After months of hard work and proving to the Court that he was capable of being an independent adult, in the summer of 2014, Alex was emancipated. “Being emancipated was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, and without the support of The Crossnore School, it would not have been possible. Honestly, without The Crossnore School, I am not sure I would be here today,” Alex said. Alex isn’t sure what the future holds for him – he’s always changing his mind – but he does plan to go to college. Alex said, “Whether that be the United States Naval Academy, NC State University or Appalachian State University, I know God will point me in the right direction.” So, the next time you are in the area, stop by Miracle Grounds Coffee Shop, grab a cup of joe, order a muffin and visit with Alex. You won’t soon forget his smile, optimism and first-class service.  HOPE | 2014 Annual Report

Campaign Update In an effort to ensure financial self-sufficiency, The Crossnore School launched the 2nd Century Campaign in 2010 with a goal of $13,000,000 restricted to the School’s endowment. For us, growing the endowment is all about vision – the vision of building capacity, creating the power to serve and providing the ability of The Crossnore School to be here serving children and youth for another 100 years. Our endowment is far from moldy funds sitting in a bank’s vault. Our endowment ensures that our children will have the clothes, education and help they need to succeed; that family groups will be able to stay together instead of being separated; that our School will continue to be a Christian sanctuary of hope and healing. In 2014, in response to a very generous gift, the Board of Trustees decided to increase the original goal to $20,000,000 by adding a capital initiative to the Campaign. The “Young Children’s Village” consists of three cottages designed to serve our younger children, and a new high school to meet the education needs of our teens. To learn more about how you can support the 2nd Century Campaign, please contact Caroline Hart, chief advancement officer, or Kelli Wilson, senior advancement officer at (828) 733-4305. 

When driving onto campus, one of the first cottages you approach is Meredith Cottage. One of eleven cottages on The Crossnore School campus, Meredith Cottage is home to ten children ranging in age from three to seventeen. After learning about Crossnore at a summer event, Michener was curious to know more. She planned a visit to campus where she immediately fell in love. Having five children, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren, her passion for children continues to grow. Meredith’s giving did not stop with a cottage. In addition to her annual support, she recently pledged to build a large playground as part of our Young Children’s Village capital campaign.

Planned giving Small Effort, BIG Difference – Just a small effort on your part can make a BIG difference in our mission of providing hope and healing to children. The goal of planned giving is to help you plan your estate and charitable giving in a way that benefits you, your family and The Crossnore School. There are many ways you can make a planned gift to The Crossnore School and enjoy tax benefits. Three common vehicles include: Bequest – Gifts made through a will or living trust. You can leave a specific asset, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after you have taken care of other beneficiaries.

Annuities – A simple contract, you agree to make a donation of cash, stocks or other assets to the School. In return, you (and someone else, if you choose) receive a fixed amount each year for the rest of your lifetime.

Life Insurance – Gifting your life insurance policy is an effective way to leverage the support you provide the School. If your policy is no longer needed or will not benefit your survivors, please consider gifting it to us. For more information on how to include The Crossnore School in your estate plans and the many ways to gift your legacy, please visit us at www.crossnoreschoolgiving.org or call Kelli Wilson, senior advancement officer, at (828) 733-4305. 

Edward Jones Investments Celebrates Christmas at Crossnore On December 6, executives from Edward Jones offices across North Carolina gathered on The Crossnore School campus to celebrate Christmas with the children. Instead of the company’s traditional regional Christmas party, Crossnore volunteer and Edward Jones leader, Mike Bell, encouraged the company to try something different. More than 180 men, women and children came to campus bearing wonderful gifts, snacks and crafts. The event was a resounding success, and Edward Jones leaders are requesting a date for Christmas 2015.

spotlight Mona Forrest

Longtime supporter and seasonal mountain resident, Mona Forrest, was initially introduced to The Crossnore School during one of the School’s annual fashion shows at Beech Mountain Club. As devoted and loving mother to her son, Brian, she was immediately captivated by the century-old School’s commitment to caring for children from unfortunate circumstances. Mona has chosen to leave her legacy to The Crossnore School through an estate gift. She said, “I worked hard for what I have, and I know Crossnore will make sure my estate betters the lives of many children to come. I like to see my money directly impact an organization, and I can’t think of a better place than The Crossnore School.” Mona’s planned gift is an example of one of the many ways you can leave your legacy to The Crossnore School. Gifts like hers help ensure Crossnore is able to serve children for another century.

Annual donors Paul and Susie O’Connell recognize these challenges and have graciously given unrestricted dollars through the Thoresen Foundation for many years. Paul stated, “We love children and we love helping others, especially local organizations.” Both Paul and Susie are active volunteers in the community and share their love with several local charities. Dollhouse meet the newest members of the leadership team Donation Angelina Spencer joined The Crossnore School family on January 12, 2015, as the Chief

Program Officer after 13 years with the State of NC Department of Health and Human Services. For the past 8 years, Angelina has served as The Crossnore School’s Division of Social Services licensing consultant, so she knows the School well. “I feel God has saved the best to last in the career in which He has called me,” Angelina said. Angelina’s extensive experience working with children and families is a blessing to The Crossnore School. Angelina and her husband have two grown sons and plan to relocate to the Crossnore area.

After 17 years in higher education fundraising, Caroline Hart joined The Crossnore School family on November 10, 2014, as the School’s Chief Advancement Officer. Most recently, Caroline served as the Vice President of Advancement at Lees-McRae College. “Joining The Crossnore School family has been a wonderful blessing to me. I am motivated by the mission, inspired by all the children and overwhelmed with the generosity of so many. God is truly at work here,” Caroline shared. Caroline’s background, fundraising experience and knowledge of the area is a great asset to an already strong and productive Advancement Division. Caroline and husband Jim have one son and live in Jonas Ridge. On January 12, 2015, The Crossnore School welcomed Bet Levine to the team. Bet serves as the Director of Case Management Services. She comes to The Crossnore School after a 30-year career working with children and families in the child welfare system. Most recently, Bet retired from Mecklenburg County Youth and Family Services where she served as the Senior Social Services Manager. Bet said, “It was going to take a very special situation for me to go back to work after retirement. I consider this opportunity to be my special delivery from God.” Bet is a wealth of knowledge and provides outstanding leadership to the School’s Case Management Team. Bet has relocated from Charlotte to Beech Mountain. Joining The Crossnore School family from Louisville, Kentucky, is Logan Thrasher. Logan is the newly appointed Campus Pastor. “What excites me the most about joining The Crossnore School is having an incredible opportunity to engage in amazing work God is doing. Being part of a team that the Lord uses to bring healing, restoration and hope to hurting children and teens is an incredible honor. I am looking forward to experiencing the miracles and evidences of God’s glory that happen every day at Crossnore,” Logan said when asked about joining The Crossnore School family. Logan and his wife Lindsey have three young daughters, with a fourth child on the way this spring. Logan’s success in youth ministry and his strong commitment to serving children and adolescents makes him a perfect fit for this newly-created Campus Pastor role. 13

Alumni Spotlight Alexander Childers Alexander Childers joined The Crossnore School family in 2000. After tumultuous experiences with multiple foster care families and in several group homes, Alexander came to Crossnore as a very bitter pre-teen. He found great solace in the serene mountain environment, comfort in playing with the woolly worms in the fall of the year, peace in the monarch butterf lies that migrated through campus from time to time, but he really loved the seclusion of the Crossnore campus. After weeks of harboring a great deal of resentment, Alexander decided it was time to set a few short term and long term goals for himself. With the help of several teachers and counselors, Alexander was encouraged, supported and loved. In 2001, he was adopted by

a loving family and moved to the Lincolnton, NC area where he enrolled in middle school. Today, Alexander is a Quality Control Chemist with the Chemtura Corporation. He obtained his Bachelor of Science from Appalachian State University in Biology (Pre-Med) and Chemistry. Alexander said, “I can honestly say that the Crossnore experience had a substantial impact in restoring my shattered and dysfunctional personality. The School also helped to financially support me while I was pursuing my degree at Appalachian State, which removed a tremendous financial burden off of me. For these reasons, I am pleased to give back to the School which had such a profound impact on my life.”

Alexander is a wonderful example of the power of The Crossnore School experience. The story of his childhood parallels many of today’s students. Without the support of many generous friends, children like Alexander would have little hope for a successful future. 

The Sloop Society was created in 2014 to recognize the School’s most loyal donors. Members of this prestigious society have made cumulative gifts totaling $100,000 or more in their lifetime. The Sloop Society is named in memory of Drs. Mary Martin and Eustace Sloop who founded The Crossnore School in 1913. Like Mary Martin and Eustace, members of The Sloop Society have illustrated through their generosity their belief in and their commitment to children.
