Summer’s here bringing longer days, a new sense of occasion and hopefully some sunshine! Our congratulations go to the awardwinning animation and visual effects studio Axis Studios, headquartered here in Skypark. The company is set to expand increasing its staff base from 160 to 200 over the next six months after securing Regional Selective Funding. Axis Studios’ growth will see it fill its studio here, adding an additional 9,000 sq ft of space and taking on up to 40 new recruits; including designers, artists, animators, writers and producers.
Axis expands in Skypark
As part of this continued expansion Axis Studios has previously grown into Bristol and London; establishing three distinct brands under the banners Axis Animation, axisVFX, Flaunt Productions serving different corners of the entertainment industry. Last month Axis welcomed Scottish Enterprise and Culture Secretary, Fiona Hyslop MP.
“This is an incredibly exciting time for Axis – all three of our studios and locations are growing,” says Richard Scott, CEO of Axis Studios. Fiona Hyslop visited the offices to see the work we’ve been doing, as we recently secured £250,000 of Regional Selective Assistance funding. ▶ This will enable us to enter new international markets, open new revenue streams, and create 20 new jobs over the next 12 months.” Founded in 2000, Axis Studios creates content for the biggest names in video games, film, television, commercials and online entertainment. Over the past 18 months, the company has diversified its offering to include featurelength animated movies and TV productions such as Mattel’s Welcome to Monster High and the Channel 4 and Netflix series Kiss Me First. A warm welcome to our newest tenant Project Trust! The Trust is an Educational Charity which sends up to 300 school-leavers overseas every year to volunteer in teaching, social care and outward bound projects across Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean. The Charity empowers young people to be confident, effective, creative, independent and resilient through a challenging volunteering experience, while making a positive difference to their overseas host communities and share their learning and understanding when they return home. As Project Trust approaches its 50th Anniversary, chief executive, Ingrid 6
Emerson MBE highlights the benefits of opening a new satellite office in Glasgow’s Skypark. She says: “Project Trust had been looking to open an office in Glasgow for some time and we knew straight away that Skypark was perfect for our needs and had no hesitation in securing a tenancy on a small office in the SkyHub building. Having an office in Glasgow has enabled Project Trust to appoint a Head of Finance and to relocate our Assistant Director for Education & Development - this will allow Project Trust to really focus on the Finance, Fundraising & Development strategies which underpin our Volunteering programme overseas. It will also ensure that we are in a much better position to network and build on partnership opportunities much more widely.” Since 1974 Project Trust’s headquarters has been on the Hebridean Isle of Coll, and the island is integral to the Charity’s identity. Spire Expands with New Satellite Manufacturing & Test Facility at Skypark Congratulations to Spire Global that has announced it has expanded its Glasgow operations with a new nanosatellite manufacturing and test facility, taking up an additional 5284 sq. ft. of space in Skypark 5. The new space allows Spire to design, build, test, and integrate satellites entirely within one building and is the most comprehensive facility of its kind in the world. Glasgow, once famous for ship building, is now leading in the way in Europe in the new age of nanosatellites. Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy, recently visited the new facility to view the production of Spire’s satellites and progress of the business. The Minister stated that “Spire are a great example of a successful inward investor to Scotland. They’ve already built and launched 29 satellites, with another 48 scheduled for launch in 2017. They’ve expanded their site by more than 5,000 square feet, and they expect to create another 20 jobs in the coming year. That is an incredible achievement for a company less than three years old!” He continued “The space sector is strong and experiencing rapid growing in Scotland, and Spire is perfectly placed to make the most of the opportunities offered by the expansion of this highly innovative and extremely hi-tech industry.” Spire has launched 44 satellites in less than 4 years with 40 of those having been built in Glasgow. “Spire like to iterate quickly and integrate new innovations on a very fast cycle” said Nick Allain of Spire, “Our expansion in Skypark gives
us even more speed with the ability to build more satellites and test them ourselves without having to exit the building.” The additional space also gives Spire room to expand its headcount. Spire’s Glasgow office, its largest at 45 employees, continues to grow along with the company’s other offices in California, Colorado, and Singapore. Four Seasons Nursery is ready for Summer!
Karen Head, Manager of Four Seasons Nursery, brings us up to speed with all that’s been happening for summer in the Nursery, from growing flowers to health and well-being and all within a newly refurbished, inspiring and safe learning environment for the children. “Here at Four Seasons Skypark Day Nursery we are focusing on summer and the children have had great fun learning all about planting and growing. The children have been very busy planting lovely flowers and exploring the soil and garden through play. “Growing Readers and the Books of Excellence are a key part of our education offering and of our commitment to our parent partnership. We are inspiring the children to love books and stories. Their favourites are currently Lulu’s flowers and the various Topsy and Tim books. “The children are currently taking part in our active athletes programme; developing their health and wellbeing through various fun physical experiences. Children in our 3-5 room are especially enjoying playing the volcano game where all the balls are thrown into the air from the parachute and various races. “We held an Open Day on Wednesday 7th June based on “keeping everyone safe” which was a great success. The children learned all about our Safety Superhero Candyfloss and parents discovered how we teach children the skills they need to be safe.”

Fine Art Exhibition by Chris Byrne This August, Chris Byrne a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art will bring the remnants of industry from Glasgow’s Clydeside to Skypark’s gallery walls, telling the stories of the many structures that once dominated the River and are now left behind. Chris graduated with Honours in Fine Art: Painting and Printmaking in 2015, exhibited recently in The Cheese Grater Building, London and Glasgow’s Lighthouse. Chris said: “I view my work as relics and fragments of exploration; Painting, etching,
drawing, photography and screen printing. Looking at the remnants of industry on Glasgow’s Clydeside, my work details the themes surrounding these contemporary ruins, from the aesthetics of decay, the reclaiming of the space by culture and nature to the themes of time, both past and an imagining of the future, when all that is left from our way of life is the shells of the structures we leave behind”. He finished, “I hope to promote the importance of the ruin, something that I feel is overlooked in today’s society as these buildings are often
hidden in plain sight. The collection aims to de-construct the boundaries set up in cities, to keep people away from investigating this captivating environment.” Christopher Byrne is available for Commissions and works from his collection are available to buy. Clyde Space scoops two innovation awards Our congratulations go to Clyde Space which has won its second award for innovation in less than a month! The company which is Europe’s leading manufacturer of miniature satellites, scooped the Sunday Times prestigious SME Export Track 100 award for innovation, sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group, just weeks after being given the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the innovation category. Clyde Space chief executive Craig Clark said he was “delighted” at the recognition of the achievements by the company and its staff. He said: “Innovation is at the forefront of everything we do at Clyde Space. Our business is based on the provision of cutting-edge products for the fast-growing small satellite sector. Clyde Space is widely considered as the industry’s Quality Innovator, meaning that we are able to balance the introduction of new ideas and technologies into our products while maintaining the quality of design and production expected of something that needs to operate in the harsh environment of space for many years. Our approach to innovation is enabling a range of exciting commercial and science applications of space.”

Craig, who was made an MBE for services to innovation and technology, added: “Last year Glasgow produced more than 60 satellites, more than any other city outside of Silicon Valley. This is as a direct result of investing heavily in the development of new products and production capabilities, including the design and launch of world’s most advanced nanosatellite and a nanosatellite assembly line. The latest award was presented at a ceremony in London to Clyde Space Non-Executive Chairman Will Whitehorn, a former President of Virgin Galactic, by Tim Hinton of Lloyds banking Group. Speaking at the presentation, Will said: “Almost everything that’s happening at the moment, in terms of industrial development in Silicon Valley, has got an eye to space. It is the place where most things we are doing now are happening. As it is getting much cheaper to access space technology, almost every big company within ten years will hope to have a satellite, and hopefully Clyde Space will be involved in making them.” Clyde Space is backed by Scottish investment companies Coralinn LLP and Nevis Capital. Filament showcase product success with new website The Filament team based here, has launched a newly revamped brand and website to showcase the innovative client products they’ve developed over the past 3 years. Jacqueline Thow Photography Exhibition
This summer, photographer Jacqueline Thow is exhibiting her unique collection of images that is inspired by nature in Skypark, as part of an ongoing study of plants and natural forms. Jacqueline Thow, originally from Aberdeen studied Surface Decoration at Gray’s School of Art. Jacqueline explains more on her choice of form and why nature inspires her. She says, “I have been working with digital photography for some years now and find its possibilities so versatile and inspiring. The idea of re-creation and metamorphosis, especially in nature, is what draws me. I’m attracted to the shapes, lines and fabric of natural plant forms, which I capture in a digital photograph. I then continue the idea of alteration and change using photoediting software, allowing the features, forms and tones to evolve into new patterns, rhythms and textures - thereby releasing a previously undiscovered potential which would have otherwise remained dormant”. Alfonso Ramundo Derelict Decadence Alfonso Ramundo is an Italian photographer who has lived in Glasgow for almost two decades. Throughout his career, he has focused on different areas of photography but there has always been a constant theme in his work - decadent structures of any kind.
As a child, he had a fascination for abandoned houses in the countryside near his hometown. Since then, Alfonso has spent his life photographing old buildings, showing them in their present form - often neglected and forgotten but with a story to tell. Alfonso has turned this fascination into a unique project “Derelict Decadence” creating a unique collection of photographs of the places he has visited and explored. He says: “The aim of this exhibition is to tell a story through pictures about buildings that, after serving our society for decades by holding various activities and/or businesses, are in time abandoned, forgotten about, and often demolished just to be replaced by fashionable creations. The subjects of these photographs range from business centres, hotels, private homes and anything inbetween. “The inspiration for this comes from the same questions I have been asking myself since I was a little boy - Who lived/worked there? Why did they leave? Why was the building abandoned? Why did they never come back?” Alfonso finishes, “My work focuses on Scotland and Glasgow in particular as all of the constructions have a similar story. They often represent remarkable works of architecture which have been left to decay over the years and have been completely overlooked, sinking into oblivion and taking with them a piece of local heritage which can never be replaced. This exhibition will bring them back to life.” “Derelict Decadence” ‘exhibition is free and open to the public and will take place throughout July/August in Skypark 1. Prints are available to buy. V.Group inspire the next generation into shipping I t’s all hands on deck, as V.Group take the next generation into the world of shipping, as they team up with the Sir Thomas Lipton Foundation’s project for schools, Buoyed Up.
Buoyed up is the project that helps raise the aspirations of Primary 6 children through hands on fun work experiences and opportunities to sail. The project is carried out in the spirit of its founder Sir Thomas Lipton, who was famous for sailing the Americas Cup and setting up Lipton’s Tea. Emily Heffernan Ho of V.Group talks to us of their involvement in the project which is in its fourth year with the company. Emily says: “It’s a brilliant project for the children and our team really enjoys taking part in it and introducing the students to the world of work in the shipping industry.

This year, V.Group held four workshops for them on finance, navigation, communication systems and engineering to show them the different aspects of the company. The navigation workshop was a firm favourite as students used our mini bridge simulator to learn how to navigate safely in and out of ports and across the ocean. Emily continues: “Students learn about finance, focusing on currencies we work with and different ways to spend money and save money. In the engineering workshop, they focussed on buoyancy of a vessel and its design and then in the Communications section it was
focused on how we use technology to communicate and safe practice online.” She says: “One of the additional bonus tasks is the competition and this year’s theme, is to build a boat as part of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) project in which the students design and make a boat out of tinfoil and straws and then test its buoyancy. In previous years the competition has seen the design of a ship and safety poster and we always look forward to receiving the entries. “We then photograph them all and make into a calendar that we give to the school to use as they wish. Last year the school sold the calendars at their Christmas fair to raise money for a South African school that is also part of the Buoyed Up project.” To find out more on Buoyed Up please visit: www.sirthomasliptonfoundation.org

huge well done to our resident security team at Skypark who have scooped ‘Best Team’ in Scotland for first class customer service, from the prestigious British Security Industry Association (BSIA) Regional Security Personnel Award. Commenting on the Award, Malcolm McFetridge, Centre Manager of Skypark said: “As very proud members of the BSIA, our Skypark Security Team are delighted to have won this award. The commitment and dedication shown by the team and Palmaris management is second to none. The pride the department takes in ensuring every visitor to Skypark receives the warmest welcome constantly shines through.” We wish the team the best of luck as they enter the national phase of the Awards of the BSIA’s prestigious Annual Lunch at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London on July 12th 2017.

For work and everyday outfits, I admire Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon for their classic and stylish looks, and tall women (like me!) who wear their height with pride, like Uma Thurman and Michelle Obama. Emma Watson is emerging as my style icon though, as she’s taking a very considered approach to fashion, wearing outfits that look great but also make a statement about anything from environment to feminism. What’s your most prized wardrobe item? Samantha McCrae, Duty Manager, Sweat Glasgow Who’s your style icon? My style icon would have to be Kate Middleton, I love her simple but modern touch that she brings to her outfits. She knows how to work a simple designed dress with a plain shoe but still manages to make it look fashionable and elegant. What’s your most prized wardrobe item? This certainly has to be my Miss National Treasure Crown and Sash, I won the title last year in June by competing in the pageant alongside another 11 girls and I was lucky enough to win. I have has the pleasure of attending many events throughout my year of reign including charity pageants, balls, gala’s and even judging a few of these. What’s your biggest fashion disaster?

My biggest fashion disaster would have to be those awful short trousers that we used to wear back in the 90s, so not flattering but I had them in every colour and material. SKYLINE SPRING ’17
I wear a lot of skinny jeans and blazers, and rely on accessories to spruce them up. I love my necklaces (a lot of H&M statement pieces, actually!) and the ever-growing scarf collection, but my favourite piece is a black fur-trimmed jacket from the 60s that I’ve inherited from a distant family member. It’s a classic cut, great quality and goes with everything – plus it has that heirloom quality too, which makes it extra special. What’s your biggest fashion disaster? I have fashion disasters on a weekly basis! My biggest problem is shoes, as I walk a lot and find it hard to get shoes that look great but are comfortable and fit my large feet too… I would love to dress up my jeans with heels, but as I’m already 6’1’’ I usually stick to not-very-stylish trainers or boots, combined with a ‘practical jacket’ to withstand the Glasgow and Edinburgh weather. Fashionistas disapprove!
5 minute interview with our Admin Assistant Catherine Davidson Role at Skypark? Administration Assistant Random observation? I enjoy working here at Skypark and I am delighted to have become a member of the management team. I work within the Skyhub in my administration job role. Within this role, I answer calls and emails about Skypark enquires and I deliver a meet and greet service for our Skyhub tenants. I also issue new access cards, whether it’s for a new employee or a replacement. Dealing with utility bills and invoices is also part of my job role. I deliver a general customer service and I am more than happy to help where I can. Chill out? I enjoy spending cosy nights in and watching movies with family but I also enjoy fun nights out with friends. My interests are generally spending time with family and friends and making good memories. What makes you happy? Many things can make me smile! But the main things would be, achieving my goals, learning and exploring new things and mainly spending time with the people I am closest to.

Following is an appeal from Corinne, for Skypark companies to consider becoming a corporate partner. The Charity supports families affected by amputation or limb difference through a range of sporting initiatives and social inclusion projects. Corinne Hutton says: “Fundraising is a huge part of what we do and we work hard with our small team to keep costs low and make sure our fundraising goes to support our families. We offer support on a one to one basis and also in a group setting. Our clubs include swimming, climbing, skiing, cycling and general fitness along with less energetic sessions where our “Troopers” meet for a cuppa and a chat, with visits from experts such as benefits advisors, prosthetists and massage therapists. Art, gardening and sewing are listed amongst the clubs we’re starting this year and we hold various days out and parties throughout the year”.

Finding Your Feet Appeals for Corporate Partners As you all know, Finding Your Feet the Charity founded by quadruple amputee Corinne Hutton, is one of our tenants and also one of Skypark’s designated charities.
