The Skypark, 10 Elliot Square, Glasgow G3 8EP

From Japan to Skypark’s Gallery Walls F resh for a new season, Skypark is hosting an art exhibition by Glasgow-based artist, Peter Gillies, featuring works in response to a recent Japanese research tour and his love of the Scottish landscape. The paintings feature a delicate misty forest collection of drawings and a number of blossom paintings with hundreds of recurring blossoms, another key feature of his work. Peter’s works are based on forests and individual trees, with a Japanese aesthetic using a range of materials from oils, acrylics, and pencils, to inks and spray paint. He grew up in Inverness and the trees and landscape of Scottish Highlands has strongly influenced the development of his work. He said: “The work on show covers drawings inspired by a research trip to Japan that affirmed the direction that my work was taking; one foot in the imaginary, landscapes and scenes of a dream like nature, quiet and contemplative, usually featuring snow, often at night.” Peter added: “One of the paintings ‘Waterfall’ is a reaching silhouetted blossom tree in front of a mighty waterfall painted in acrylics while another painting ‘Blossom’ features hundreds

of individual blossoms, hand painted, cut and affixed to the scene; a laborious process but a pleasing outcome. ‘Tomioka’, is a night time forested hillside scene and was the first of three in this theme. It’s not a place of this reality, but it resonates a feeling or perhaps memory I recognise. I hope that Skypark’s tenants get the chance to stop and enjoy the exhibition as they go about their daily work.” Peter Gillies is a Fine Artist & Stained Glass specialist, based in Glasgow operating from the ‘Department A’ studio in The Old School, Dornoch Street, a new studio block in the Eastend. The exhibition is free and open to the public and will take place in March in Skypark 1. Prints of ‘Tomioka’ and Peters full collection are available to buy. Please contact Peter directly at these links - To find out more on exhibiting Skypark’s donated gallery please contact: lisa@skypark-glasgow. com.

Research from 2017 has shown that Millennials believe it is their duty to improve the world and feel taking part in charity

Stream TECHNOLOGIES CONTINUE TO GROW initiatives has a positive impact on the world around them, whilst providing personal fulfillment. “At Peninsula, our employees have set the precedent for our charitable work, organising multiple events from food drives to collect donations for local food banks to themed Fun days to raise money for great causes. As part of our staple Fun day Friday, one employee designed event was The Ha Ha Club @Peninsula, a night filled with laughs and entertainment in aid of Destination Florida. Others have included carnival themed events and Peninsula’s own answer to the Great British Bake Off, where the proceeds went to Macmillan Cancer. “There is no denying the positive effect that supporting charity has on an organisation and its employees. When we run events there is always a rush of excitement, that stems from knowing that you are giving back and making a difference in the community around you. This is one of the most valuable things a business can do.”

Carers Trust launches Cans for Carers Campaign S kypark tenants the Carers Trust has partnered with ACE Recycling and Every Can Counts to launch ‘Cans for Carers’, an aluminium drinks cans recycling initiative that aims to raise money for young adult carers aged under 25 in Scotland. The campaign, which is supported by the free-to-use Every Can Counts recycling programme, aims to encourage businesses across central Scotland to recycle their cans and raise money for the Carers Trust. For every tonne of cans collected through the Cans for Carers initiative ACE will donate £250 to Carers Trust Scotland who in turn will use the funds to support young adult carers in Scotland. Meg Wright, Director for Scotland and Ireland of the Carers Trust said: “This is a great campaign to raise awareness of the work of the Carers Trust and the challenges faced by young adult carers under the age of 25. They have to combine study and work alongside their caring role. They may not have the money or time to take part in social events or access simple things like sports, recreation or even meeting their friends. Our aim is to support them and help them have a life

out-with their caring role. We are proud to be working with both ACE Recycling and Every Can Counts to help encourage more people to recycle aluminium cans and raise money to support these carers in our communities.” Donating drinks cans to Carers Trust in Skypark couldn’t be easier, Carers Trust can drop off collection boxes for your offices and once the bags are full contact Carers Trust on 0300 123 2008 or email scotland@carers. org and they will collect the bags. The cans will be processed and recycled by ACE Recycling and

funds raised will be donated to the Carers Trust. The Trust works to improve support, services and recognition for anyone living with the challenges of caring, unpaid, for a family member or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or addiction problems. It offers specialist services for carers of people of all ages and conditions and a range of individually tailored support and group activities. 11

Winter Wonderland on Ice raises £600 for Finding Your Feet

Fan favourite American #28 Jacob Doty and #71 Craig Peacock (team GB star) of Braehead Clan Hockey Club launched Skypark’s first Winter Wonderland on Ice event and thanks to everyone who came, it raised £600 for Finding Your Feet! The players were joined by Aaron McKinnon (3 years old) and Ruairidh Scotland (4 years old) of Skypark’s Asquith Four Seasons Nursery and Finding Your Feet’s founder Corinne Hutton.

he amazing team behind Anderston Youth Café has revealed that the project for young people in the area will relaunch this spring, opening its doors in a brand new modern venue. The Café is also looking for help from Skypark tenants with 15 minute jobs/careers talks, a first aid class or fundraising to support running costs. Please read on to find out how your company could get involved. The Youth Café not only provides young people with their own space to meet, but has grown to take on new projects that have boosted the area’s civic pride. A garden and bins project has encouraged young adults to take responsibility and make positive changes to the benefit of the wider community. Anderston Youth Café was formed in 2009 by Anderston Action Group set up by Councillor Philip Bratt and

Sanctuary Housing Association. Chairperson of Anderston Action Group, Hazel Ralston explains more on the background. Hazel said, “The Café was set up to give young people aged 10 to 16 a venue in the area, where they could have their own space to meet and take part in activities. “It’s been a great success and we’re looking forward to relaunching the Café to the benefit of the wider community. Children who came to the project as 10 year olds, are returning as young adult volunteers to give their support to the next generation. They have grown in confidence and are taking responsibility for their community by getting involved in other projects. With the help of a grant from Dobbies and Glasgow West Housing Association, the group cleared, painted and made over a neglected back court area, that is now lovely space for residents to sit outside and enjoy.

“Skypark has helped us in the past supplying paint and a mural artist to decorate our first venue and again Skypark is supporting our new venue, with an artist who has decorated the window spaces.

“We continue to raise funds through regular charity events to pay for the Café’s running costs, such as electricity and equipment for the young people. Any help that Skypark tenants can provide whether fundraising or facilitating life skills talks would be well received. Thanks to everyone that has helped to support the Youth Café as we look forward to the next 10 years.”
