Welcome Spring has sprung! As the days get longer we have tons of amazing stuff happening here; as a venue for an international art exhibition, a new fresh bread delivery service mmm, tenant news, competitions, Skyperks deals and much more! Drum roll! We’re proud to announce that in April, Skypark is a pop up venue for Glasgow International Exhibition, as it showcases the City as a major centre for the display of contemporary visual art. Our reception transforms into an installation by artist Will Renwick and over in Skypark 5, Sam Venables converts a street level office into a shop front display. For those individual pieces, Elizabeth Murphy’s exhibition is selling online and in the exhibition! For fresh bread lovers, the charity Freedom Bakery will be filling the air with the delicious smell of freshly baked artisan bread. Menus are available from our Concierge. In May, we’re raising awareness of homelessness in the City as sponsors of the Marie Trust’s ‘rough night’ event. The 'sleep rough night' so other people don’t have to,’' will take place on Friday 20th May in Skypark’s car park. Find out more about volunteering to help this worthwhile cause on page 12. Skypark is ‘Pop Up’ Arts Venue for GI 2016 We are delighted to announce that Skypark will transform into a pop up arts venue this April in celebration of Glasgow International 2016. A collaboration of Glasgow International artists including Sam Venables, Elizabeth Murphy, and Charlotte Cousins will feature collections across three Skypark venues showcasing the City as a major centre for the display of contemporary visual art. Now in its 7th year, Glasgow International will take place across the City from 8th to 25th April comprising exhibitions, events, projects and talks from a line-up of international and Glasgow-based artists.

IT’S FRIDAY X LITTLEWHITEHEAD www.littlewhitehead.com Glasgow based, Littlewhitehead’s work is a continual dialogue between the artists that draw upon many sources as influencers, from tabloid headlines to humour.
Sam Venables’ project IT’S FRIDAY is backed by an A-N new collaborations bursary plus Glasgow International 2016. Funding enabled Sam to research the project by visiting numourous artist led galleries across the UK, laying the foundation for the Glasgow International project. Sam says: “The project will transform a set of street facing windows showing artists work in the style of department store windows, designed to attract attention from passers by.”

lasgow International 2016 and HomePlatform have commissioned “On the Edge of a Continent”, by emerging artists Will Kendrick, Sulaiman Majali and Lewk Wilmshurst. The exhibition features works and ideas that will focus upon the potential of a new-age society; of sensation, the beautiful image, exaggerated culture and self-gratification. Charlotte Cousins, Home-Platform’s curator explains what the exhibition sets out to achieve, “This is curatorial research platform examining the relative positions of object, image and gallery. It’s a chance for new artists to explore, interpret and apply their ideas to new spaces beyond a traditional gallery”.

T
he collaborative team behind Deuce Deuce will be selling new print commissions from 12 international artists as well as exhibiting existing works comprising video, sculpture, photography and painting. The prints will take the form of bedding sets and unisex capes. Deuce Deuce is a nomadic curatorial collaboration between Elizabeth Murphy and Amy Jones, occupying retail and exhibition spaces to explore the cross over between contemporary art, apparel and the integration of sub culture into the mainstream.
Elizabeth Murphy told us more about the exhibition and what it aims to do. She says: “Deuce Deuce tests the potential of an artists’ multiple, realising it through a series of ready to wear garments and home ware accessories. We commission artists to develop prints specifically designed to adorn or to live with, the intention being to explore the flexibility of this format. Creating products that defy stereotypical gender tastes, Deuce Deuce works with a unisex approach creating art objects to integrate into every lifestyle. Elizabeth continues, “It will question notions of ownership, display and decoration and explore the rupture in reproduction. We force the aspirations of printed matter from artwork to functioning fashion object.

ongratulations to Clyde Space the manufacturer of Scotland’s first satellite, that has announced it is expanding in Skypark and is also opening its first subsidiary company in the United States. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon visited the company in February, on the same day that CEO Craig Clark, revealed that to meet rising demand for the company’s pacesetting products, it has increased its current manufacturing capacity by creating an additional 2500 square feet ‘clean room’ for building and testing satellites.

Craig said: “Our American customers have been asking us to open in the USA for a number of years and we see huge opportunities there both in commercial space activity and also in the defence sector. Over 90% of our sales are exported and it is the logical move for our first investment overseas.
Craig said: “I often come across people who see the space industry as not a serious business market, more suited to scientists and technology geeks. However, with the space market showing sustained growth at almost 10% over the past few years, and our specific market segment of small satellites growing at close to 40% per year, it’s clear there is an excellent business case.
“About 40% of our business already comes from the USA through the supply of sub-systems to organisations such as US data company SPIRE Global, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), NASA and the US Air Force.
“We are creating multiple high-skilled jobs here in Glasgow – I think the space industry is a hidden gem in the UK’s economy and I’m delighted we’ve managed to bring the space industry to Scotland.”
“We also supply full spacecraft to the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Establishing a US company will put us in a position to attract more work from the American government including in areas where we are currently restricted. “At first, the US company will concentrate on developing sales but we expect to quickly establish a manufacturing base replicating what we have in Glasgow; the emphasis being a US facility, staffed by US citizens, producing ‘made in USA’ spacecraft.

The acquisition of more space at its Skypark headquarters follows the company’s most successful year and comes just 13 months after moving from its previous base because it was too small. In just over a year the Clyde Space team has doubled to 75 staff and that is expected to increase to 100 this year. The recruitment will bolster spacecraft development, manufacturing, business development and back-office functions. The company will be launching their eye-catching new branding and website in March 2016, demonstrating that innovation is at the forefront of Clyde Space’s international growth strategy and marking their presence within the global marketplace. An average of six spacecraft a month, are being produced in the current ‘clean room’, a number that is expected to increase rapidly in the next 12-18 months. Craig said the demand for mass-produced spacecraft and systems was driving the company’s rapid growth and

Role at Skypark? I facilitate the concierge needs of all Skypark tenants on a daily basis and the monthly site social events fusing a variety of pop up shops with different themed food and musical performers. It’s a great way for people to take a break from work and have a catch up! Random observation? One thing I’ve discovered is the ever increasing, mountain of gloves which people drop daily that get handed in to reception. Trying then to find the rightful owner is a minefield!. I’m sure we could open our own glove shop at some point. Chill out?

The Marie Trust is launching an appeal to Skypark tenants to sign up and raise funds for ‘sleep rough for 1 night so other people don’t have to’. All funds raised will help support and maintain vital Day Centre services with every penny used to help disadvantaged people in Glasgow.

he Marie Trust Day Centre in Glasgow provides Crisis Intervention for people sleeping rough in the city - including showers, toiletries, clothing, food and sleeping bags. This event will not duplicate what it is really like to sleep rough in Glasgow but will give a small taster of what so many vulnerable people have to endure. It is a lonely and dangerous life for Glasgow’s homeless and The Marie Trust believes everyone has the right to a better life. ‘Helping homeless people to help themselves’ is the ultimate aim of The Marie Trust. Getting people out of the cycle of homelessness and re-building their lives. The Day Centre provides a start-to-finish service, from the initial crisis to getting vulnerable people out of their desperate chaotic situations into more stable, safe, dignified lives. Other services include Duty Service – advice, advocacy, support and access to medical & mental health services, a Café serving breakfast & lunch each day, Counselling, Tenancy Sustainment & Furniture Project to help people build, manage and keep their home when they are finally rehoused, Skills Development – all level of classes from basic Numeracy, Literacy, Art & IT to accredited courses in Counselling, Psychology and Social Care, and PEP – a supported volunteer programme providing 4 to 6 month work experience placements to help people get back to work. Catherine Lavery, Fundraiser for The Marie Trust says, “We know there is rarely a quick fix for our clients. It takes time and often a combination of supporting services to help people gain the skills, knowledge, experience and confidence to move on and return to a more mainstream way of life”.
“On average, around 100 people come to the Day Centre every day, looking for help. Our services are getting busier whilst funding is being cut. This event will help the Day Centre support vulnerable people with nowhere else to turn”. “Our rough sleeping event is about raising awareness of the issue of homelessness, which is getting worse and is affecting all types of people from all backgrounds. It is impossible to be exact about the number of homeless people in the city, and it is the same for the number of people sleeping rough. What we do know, based on very low

LET’S TALK ABOUT ‘JOHN’ For over a week ‘John’ came in to our café for lunch. Staff tried to talk to him but he just said “its fine” and hurried off after eating. We were concerned, he wore the same clothes all week and each day became more and more dishevelled. He was around 70 years old.

And there are at least 78 sites in and around the city centre regularly used by rough sleepers. The ‘Rough Night’ is supported by Skypark and McDonalds Restaurant (Finnieston Street) – providing a hot drink at bedtime and breakfast in the morning. It costs £20 to register and participants are asked to raise a minimum fundraising level of £120. Every penny raised will be used to help a local Glasgow charity help local Glasgow people.

Day Centre staff intervened and got him an appointment that afternoon with the homeless person’s casework team in Paisley. John was treated as a priority case and they managed to find him emergency accommodation for that evening. A couple of weeks later John handed in a note to say he had moved into a temporary furnished flat and thanks for our help.
Reluctantly, he finally opened up. He’d been homeless for a couple of weeks. He had previously been staying with a family member but a gambling problem had led to troubles in the family. They still cared but couldn’t cope with his problems.
Not long after he came in for a visit and looked like a different man. He became quite emotional and told Support Staff he “would’ve been dead” without them. His family also called to say “thanks for looking after my brother”.
What little money he had had was almost gone – spent on food and then bus fares travelling around all night on

An exhibition about space
C
ollaboration happens all around us in business and organisations in Skypark and artists Paula Duvå and Sarah Riisager, will be bringing this idea to life in their showcase “An exhibition about space”, inspired by the movement of people and things across space. Paula and Sarah who are in their final year studying Fine Art Photography at the Glasgow School of Art, will showcase a range of photographic works that originate from their shared interest in the space around us. Paula says: “Photography is the perfect medium as it shows reality but has a possibility

of making up any story. The photographs in the exhibition work with the occupation of space reflecting the Skypark reception as a space.” The exhibition will open on 28th April, in Skypark 1 reception in the donated gallery space, that is free and available to support up and coming artists. Everyday Occasions Maja Björk’s new exhibition of illustrations “Everyday Occasions” is a Nordic tale of everyday life and memories that she hopes will remind us as time goes by to stop and smell the daisies. In her final year textile design at the Glasgow School of Art, Swedish artist Maja Björk’s exhibition is inspired by her family and friends, as she shares her personal memories in pictures in our gallery space.

Maja says, “The pictures are part of my preparation for the June degree show, so they will eventually become embroidered pieces. I like to depict everyday occasions with friends and family, to capture the beauty and colours of everyday life and sceneries in Sweden, Berlin and Glasgow”. One of her favourite pieces is “Farmor and the egg cup collection”, featuring her 89 year old grandmother Brita. Maja continues, “The egg cup collection used to belong to my granddad, Allan, who died in 2009. When me and my siblings were kids we were excited to choose what egg cup to eat from at breakfast while we were visiting. It was also a given present at his birthday or Christmas to give him a new egg cup and some are hand made by us as children. They liked to travel when they were younger and some are souvenirs. When my grandparents grew older and had to move from their house to a flat, the egg cup collection remained intact and has a place of honour in the kitchen. “I think it has a big symbolic value for my grandmother, memories of both Allan and everyone who has helped contribute to the collection. I still get excited when I get to choose an egg cup while visiting. It brings back memories, even though everything else around has changed.” “Everyday Occasions” runs until the 28th March and work is available for sale by arrangement with the artist. Khloe Kardashian even though all of the Kardashians have a really nice up to date fashion style, I love Khloe because she wears so many styles and suits all of them. I also adore Khloe’s make-up, it’s always so flawless.
Lulu isn’t a musical favourite of mine but I think she dresses amazingly, like the iconic ‘rock chick’ and I love her hair styles over recent years. She looks much younger than her years and apparently without work (but who’d care if she had help!) Good Glasgow girl too!

Probably a pair of khaki lace up heels that I got from Kurt Geiger and I adore them. I would choose to wear them to get the weekly shop if it could!
I have a very long tartan coat/dress made for my son Rory’s Christening in Hutton tartan. It’s a very dark tartan that our family designed and commissioned and it laces up the front with a scrappy ‘Cinderella’ frayed hemline. It comes out for every rugby match or any Scottish event and I wore it when I was invited to Downing Street in November for a St Andrew’s Day reception.
What’s your biggest fashion disaster? I love different styles and experimenting with fashion so I wouldn’t say I have many disasters. However, one night I put on loads of fake tan before I went out and put my white fitted dress on. During the night my tan started to show through my dress because the party was so warm!

What’s your biggest fashion disaster? I’m the only person I know with a Fabric & Fashion ‘O’ level and I used to make my own clothes in my teens. I had several bad 80s inspired outfits at school discos all with threads hanging off them. No one else had the same outfit! Sadly, since I lost my hands, my machine is redundant but maybe that’s a blessing though! And when I get new hands, who knows?! Homemade clothes again? I think not!
Charity round-up Well done to all the Skypark bakers over the last few months! One Search Direct raised a whopping £500 for Kian’s Neuroblastoma Journey, and Travel 2 baked for Bliss, raising £385 for the charity - who are vital in the support of babies born too soon, too small and too sick.

Freshly Baked by Freedom! We have a fantastic new bakery delivery service to announce at Skypark! Freedom Bakery is offering a weekly delivery service of fresh bread, cakes and pastries to Skypark every Friday. Produce is “made using traditional artisan methods and the best ingredients available.” Iona Jackson of Freedom Bakery explains why the enterprise was set up. Iona says: “We are a social enterprise artisan bakery based at HMP Low Moss near Bishopbriggs, which trains and develops the skills of a small team of prisoners who learn on the job. This process utilises sustainable skills-based education to increase employability and thus dramatically decrease reoffending for our graduates. Everything we produce is made using traditional artisan methods and with the best ingredients available.” Iona explains more about the new service, “Our bread can be ordered as a group by any company based at Skypark using a simple system. All you need to do is complete our weekly order form and send it to us by Wednesday at 12:30 each week. Order forms and menus can be obtained from Iona@freedombakery.org. “Bread, pastries and cakes are baked fresh to order and are delivered by 3pm on Friday.
