WELCOME Welcome to the Winter issue of Skyline, which we've themed around 'winter warmers' to cheer us all up as the cold weather sets in (although – did we have any warm weather this year?!) As ever it's been a busy few months at Skypark. From moustaches to Pilates, it's all been going on, and the buzz around the campus carries on into the festive season with a full programme of entertainment, offers, services and treats to warm up your winter.

In November, members of our security team took park in Movember and you may have spotted some spectacular facial furniture around Skypark. The king of facial bling was crowned, taking the prize for best growth. We're proud of everyone who took part to support this great cause, which raises vital funds and awareness for men's health issues. Still to come, we have our Christmas Fayre on 6th December, our annual Christmas event featuring a host of pop up shops as well as mince pies, mulled wine and a string quartet to get you in the mood for the festivities. We've also got our regular events including Pressure Drop massage on 7th December and the Bike Station Maintenance workshops on 11th December. But it's not all about merriment and mince pies – as you know at Skypark, we like to support our local communities too. On 16th Jan, we have the Blood Donation mobile unit on site. We're also currently hosting the Life with Art exhibition in Skypark 1, which showcases some inspirational art by people with disabilities. Definitely worth a visit. And finally... drumroll... we're about to launch our brand new tenant intranet, MySky! This intranet, which will soon be made available to everyone at Skypark, will be choc-full of news, offers and updates, as well as access to our all-new Skyperks card, which gives you all some fantastic discounts to local shops and businesses. We hope you enjoy these perks, or as we like to think of them, our Christmas gifts to you! Wishing you all a healthy, happy and prosperous festive season and New Year.

Healthcare collaboration is tweet success Four Seasons offers staff winter flu jabs Skypark’s Four Seasons Nursery was helping Sandra White MSP (Glasgow Kelvin) spread the message to people at risk and others to take up the winter flu jab. Inez Murray of Four Seasons is funding the staff’s jabs and one of the staff an asthma sufferer has encouraged her colleagues to take up the offer. Reach Pharmacy, Skypark’s health and wellbeing partners delivered the flu clinic here in November. Sandra White MSP said: “I was delighted to accept the invitation to attend the flu vaccination event and have the opportunity to chat to employees and nursery children at Skypark. The vaccination gives vital protection against influenza strains and I would encourage others, not only those in high-risks groups, to get the flu jab. It will not only reduce the likelihood of catching the virus, but also prevent it from spreading further.” All Skypark companies have access to a range of services here, from a smoking cessation clinic to a prescription delivery service. The collaboration has seen supportive tweets from other MSPs and Nicola Sturgeon MSP. Sandra White also commented on the joint employer awareness campaign to mark No Smoking Day: “Research has shown that one out of ten smokers quit on No Smoking Day. Everyone is aware of the serious health risks smoking causes and many people are willing to quit but need just a little bit of extra help and guidance. It is never too late to quit smoking and awareness events such as the one held by Reach Pharmacy are a great opportunity for smokers to seek support and advice from professionals on how to reduce or stop smoking. Giving up smoking does not only improve life expectancy and general wellbeing, but increases fitness level, the sense of taste and smell and enhances confidence and self-esteem. I hope that through events like this more people will be encouraged to quit smoking.”

The Glasgow School of Art’s Jane StickleyWoods tells us why it’s great to be here... While the redevelopment of the GSA’s Garnethill campus is well underway, Skypark is temporary home to its famous school of design, complete with its very own ‘mini monkey’ refectory, feeding creative minds of the future. Jane Stickley-Woods, the Design School’s academic support manager gives us an insight into the School of Design and how Skypark’s big spaces and natural light help to inspire the next generation. Jane Stickley-Woods explains, “For anyone unfamiliar with the GSA here’s a bit of background. Founded in 1845, it’s one of the first Government Schools of Design as a centre of creativity
and promoting good design for the manufacturing industries. The School’s role has evolved to reflect the needs of the communities it is part of, embracing the late 19th century fine art and architecture, education and today, digital technology. The GSA has three schools; School of Design, School of Fine Art and the Mackintosh School of Architecture. “Each school has an Academic Support Manager where we overlap in planning and organising the operation. I like to think of myself as a bit like WD40 - smoothing, organising and keeping it all moving! Here at Skypark the School of Design has Communication Design, Interior Design, Silversmithing and Jewellery, Fashion and Textiles, Product Design and Product Design Engineering departments. “We’re in the midst of the admissions cycle, preparing to make offers to new students, so it’s full on in the background as the academic staff continue to support final year students, to culminate in their degree show in June 2013.” Jane continues, “It’s such a unique place to work and we’re very proud of our students’ success rate. External Examiners score the GSA highly for its ‘studio culture’ which means that every student has a desk or a
workstation, giving them a sense of their own space. This is highly prized in the creative education system. We chose Skypark as the building’s natural light, large floor plates and big spaces means that we are able to maintain this culture and house each department on one floor. “Next year’s Design Degree Show will take place again at Skypark showcasing work by a new generation of talent that is following in the footsteps of celebrated fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, PDE graduates Andy Lauder, Design Manager for Apple in the USA and Jonathan Biddle, Design Manager for Kindle/Amazon – USA, and many more. “We hope that the companies with whom the GSA has shared Skypark, will come along and see the exciting and ground-breaking work from our international creative community in June 2013,” Jane finishes. SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK HAILED AS SUCCESS Skypark was a key venue and lounge hub for Social Media Week 2012 and the event was hailed as a resounding success in a closing address by Humza Yousaf MSP and Minister for External Affairs and International Development in the Scottish Government.

We had fantastic bucket shakers too and we raised a magnificent £300 for Children in Need. We would like to thank the Skypark community for their support.”

02 Connects with Our friends at O2 are taking part in a fantastic Children 1st fundraising initiative which will see them pitch against other Scottish businesses to raise £5k for the charity, by creating a cook book with an accompanying app from scratch, in a Dragon’s Den style event. Fiona McCallum, customer service manager at 02 tells us about the Dragon’s Glen product and how you can lend your support for this great cause. Fiona says “Our product is a cook book accompanied by an app featuring recipes from the best loved restaurants in Scotland, but it has an exciting twist! Should the reader wish to see the chef demonstrate the recipe they can look at the book through their phone and the pictures will magically turn into videos of the actual chef cooking the dish when viewed through a smartphone. We think it’s a fantastic product that Skyparkers will love. “Our mentor is Michelle Mone OBE and we have most Scottish restaurants on board to contribute their recipes so far including a guest spot from Glasgow chef, Brian Maule. It’s such a great cause it would be amazing if Skyparkers could lend their help by buying the book and help to promote it by sharing it with their friend on facebook.” Priced at £10 the cook book is now on sale at Skypark. eet Stuart Law. Stuart is part of our Skypark security team that meets and greets visitors and staff, 24/7, no matter what the weather! As if he wasn’t busy enough what with finishing his Christmas shopping in October (yes October!!), Stuart was the ring leader of last month’s Movember fundraiser raising awareness of the men’s health charity. Stuart lead a team of nine daring men from our Skypark security, maintenance and cleaning team who grew their mos and raised funds in support of a colleague who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. Inspired by their colleague’s brave battle, they downed tools to take part in a ‘tache parade and ‘shave off’ in a final push to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. The winner of the parade was Willy Maher.

Glasgow mum has sent a heart wrenching plea to help her send Caoimhe her 3 year old daughter to America to undergo treatment for a life threatening brain tumour.
Stuart says “The dodgy mos the guys were sporting over the past few weeks has given everyone a good giggle, however on a serious note it was great to see them joining the millions of people up and down the country who were the walking, talking billboards for this worthy cause.” “When it comes close to home like this it puts everything into perspective, and the guys didn’t hesitate in putting themselves forward to show support to their colleague. From handlebars to pencil thins we saw it all! Thanks to everyone that took part it was a huge success!” An amazing £1,269 was raised for men’s health charities. Thank you Stuart for making such a big push for this great cause!

It also delivers maximum dose to the targeted area, but it isn’t available in the UK. “The aim is to take Caoimhe to the US so she can receive this treatment and all funds raised are going towards this. Chemotherapy has no proven effect on this type of cancer; conventional radiotherapy, if she survived, would leave her no quality of life. Proton therapy has and does work in fighting this type of tumour. This type of treatment costs approximately £200,000. This is where Skypark comes in!” Paula says, “We need your help to raise a minimum of £200,000 as this only covers the Proton therapy and there are many additional costs for travel, living and accommodation. Caoimhe’s family and friends have already raised a staggering £14k on her Just Giving page however this is just 7% of what is needed to get Caoimhe to the US. “Not every child can be saved but Caoimhe would have a better chance of survival with this treatment - she deserves every possible chance so please, please, please help make this a reality and donate generously.” There is a Just Giving page set up if you would like to donate directly to this rather than individual events www.justgiving.com/ jaclyn4princesscaoimhe. On hearing the mum’s plea, our lovely friends at HML raised an amazing £1k with a climb of Schiehallion, a site bake sale while a beauty event and a ‘gunge the ops manager’ are planned soon. Paula Beveridge of HML tells us Caoimhe’s story and how Skyparkers can help by donating to give the little girl a chance of treatment. Paula says, “Caoimhe has Anaplastic Ependymoma with Spinal Metastases, a grade 3 malignant brain tumour. She is having chemotherapy to keep the cancer at bay because of her young age and the detrimental effect radiotherapy has on such a young brain. To give Caoimhe conventional radiotherapy in this country would leave her neurologically devastated - blindness, deafness, low IQ and stunted growth are only some of the side effects. “Proton therapy is a targeted method of irradiating young

LifewithArt Skypark helps arts charity
L
ifewithArt, a charity that helps to develop confidence in young and disabled people through arts education has completed its first therapy classes at Skypark. The young people’s body of work ranges from crafts to drawings and photography. With artwork available to view from January 2013 after the new sessions begin in Skypark 1.
“We needed a Glasgow venue to hold the art classes and thanks to Skypark, who offered help by giving space made sure that the classes could go ahead. The support of businesses is vital as it allows the charity to give young people opportunities to express themselves and that can lead to life changing experiences.”
Set up in 2010, LifewithArt supports young and disabled people through art, music and drama workshops in the community. David Pigott a Trustee for LifewithArt explains the work of the charity, “The therapeutic benefits of art for our young people have been widely accepted by the medical profession and other charities, but very few charities are able to provide art workshops regionally. We do this by providing accommodation, teachers and materials to allow people the opportunity to create something themselves of whatever level they are able to achieve which gives them pride and confidence in their own abilities.
Kara DeBoeser a LifewithArt Co-ordinator for Scotland says “My fellow teachers and I love being able to work with all of the different groups and enjoy getting to know them as individual artists, as well as a class. The artwork produced during each month-session is very different from person to person - it’s fun working together to create such a diverse body of work.”

e are excited to announce that local artists based at the gem that is The Hidden Lane, have framed a showcase exhibition unveiled this December, in our Reception Gallery.
Hidden Lane artists to showcase at Skypark Andy Peutherer event organiser and founder of www.underthekitchensink.com says: “The idea behind this exhibition is to showcase the work of local artists based in and around The Hidden Lane, a creative hub located in Finnieston, Glasgow. “There is a real creative buzz happening here and it’s great to be part of that and to have the opportunity to exhibit some of our work in Skypark. With such a diverse range of art, we are aspiring to make it more accessible to the public, out with the confines of commercial art galleries.”
Neile Goesch is a painter of landscapes, heavily influenced by Klimt, Schiele & Hundertwasser. His work depicts the rooftops and architectural layers of European Cityscapes and villages www.neilegoesch.com
“All of the artists have an open studio policy so why not pop in for a chat and see more of their work. You can buy original works, prints or commission a one off piece, an ideal gift for Christmas or birthdays,” finishes Andy. Baby & Child St. Andrew’s First Aid course Thursday 14th February We are holding a Baby & Child St. Andrew’s First Aid course in Skypark on Thursday 14th February. This six-hour course is for anyone who wishes to gain knowledge and experience of First Aid for babies and children. The usual cost of this course is £52.50 +VAT but Skypark will subsidise the course for anyone who works at Skypark, meaning you only pay £18.00!
