Charity has been big news around site, so thank you to those of you for sharing your fundraising stories. It’s brilliant that so many of you are supporting good causes. You helped raise a whopping £7k for Cash for Kids and Finding Your Feet.

In January, Robin Johnston an award winning photographer and digital artist will be showing his newest exhibition ‘Glasgow Shadows’ a collection of street photography in Skypark, and look for Jen’s original work who will unveil her exhibition in March.

Finally, congratulations to Clyde Space who have appointed a new management team as their expansion forges ahead and also to everis, SeaTec and V.ships crews and the success of the Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club’s Corporate Regatta on the Clyde. Award Win For Four Seasons At Skypark!

Four Seasons at Skypark provides rich environments for learning, discovery and play throughout the nursery from our baby room to our 3-5s and fantastic indoor and outdoor garden.

Our nursery staff work closely with the training and development team to ensure our environments are comfortable, warm, attractive and stage appropriate for the children.

After careful consideration we chose to enter the NMT awards for best indoor learning environment.

We feel extremely proud of our nursery especially after our amazing refurbishment. Only 5 nurseries per category are shortlisted out of the hundreds who enter. Lyndsay Kilpatrick, Acting Manager and Kirstie Mann, Training and Development Manager then presented to a panel of judges on why our environments were outstanding. On Friday 2nd September Lyndsay, Kirstie and some of the team went to the Scottish NMT awards ceremony, held at Hilton Glasgow where they had a fantastic evening made even better when it was announced Four Season at Skypark had won!! The judges said “Four Seasons at Skypark clearly demonstrated that they operate in a first class learning environment and that the children are at the centre of all decisions made in regard to their learning environment and development and heavily influenced the outcome along with strong staff and parent involvement”

Well done to Four Seasons Nursery at Skypark for winning the Scottish NMT award for Indoor learning environment 2016!

Refurbishment complete Asquith have invested £180,000 in a refurbishment of the nursery, now complete! Our Showcase day was a fantastic day for existing parents and new families to come along and look at our newly refurbished nursery whilst having fun with their child. The families enjoyed quality time together playing our giant garden games: snakes and ladders and connect 4.

The children were very excited when meeting a popular childrens character! We offered free family portraits using our company photographer who specialises in childrens photography. The nursery chef made some delicious food, the lemon drizzle cake was a huge hit with one parent requesting it every day when he drops off his son at nursery.

Many of the children had their faces painted with various designs from butterflies to super heroes. The magician truly was magic, he had both adults and children enthralled with his slight of hand and jokes. And to end the day our ice cream van was on hand to ensure that everyone had a delicious ice cream before their journey home.

e are delighted to hear that Clyde Space, the pioneering company that designed and manufactured Scotland’s first spacecraft, has announced two major appointments to its management team including the former President of Virgin Galactic.

Industry veteran, Will Whitehorn, who had a long career with Virgin and is currently Deputy Chairman of Stagecoach Group PLC, joins as Non-Executive Chairman. Jennifer Riddell-Dillet, a Senior Executive with multinational experience leading and developing business teams, becomes Chief Operating Officer.

Clyde Space was delighted to welcome Major Tim Peake on 17 October to its HQ in Skypark, Glasgow.

A

group of schoolchildren from Glasgow had the opportunity to meet the world famous astronaut Tim Peake.

The pupils, from Baljaffray Primary School and Bearsden Academy, took part in a question and answer session about his historic six-month stay on the International Space Station.

Questions varied from his choice of in-flight playlist to the living organisms onboard the ISS. The event was aimed to inspire, specifically children, to develop an interest in science and technology.

Tim was visiting Clyde Space as part of a post-flight tour of the UK. During the Principia mission, which took him on about 3000 orbits of the earth, he became the first UK astronaut to make a spacewalk.

When asked about returning to space he said: “I’d love to go back into space because there are so many exciting missions coming up.”

The British European Space Agency astronaut spent just over six months on board the International Space Station after launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan

last December – the same location from which Scotland’s first satellite, designed and built by Clyde Space in Glasgow, was launched in 2014.

Clyde Space CEO Craig Clark, who presented Tim with a “Space is Awesome” T-shirt, said: “Tim and the Principia Mission have done a fantastic job to raise the profile of the UK space industry and I’m sure they see some fantastic talent coming and working in companies like Clyde Space as a result. It was great to see the children who came along for the event being inspired by Tim’s stories and meet their hero in person.”

Some of Clyde Spaces latest satellites being built by Clyde Space for the UK Space Agency and American company Outnernet Inc were on show during Tim’s visit. Three 1U Outernet Platforms, which will send emergency weather warnings and medical advice as well as news and entertainment information.

Funded through the UK Space Agency’s International Partnerships in Space Programme (IPSP) Clyde Space are developing a constellation of three communication satellites as the first phase of a plan to deliver free internet content globally from a constellation of hundreds of CubeSats.

New Exhibition Shines Glasgow’s Unique Light

R

obin Johnston an award winning photographer and digital artist will open his newest exhibition ‘Glasgow Shadows’ a collection of street photography in Skypark in January.

Johnston’s work has been shot since 2007 having lived in France and London and was inspired “by Glasgow’s specific kind of light” to return to photography when he moved back to the City.

Robin said, “Glasgow’s unique light gives the images a gritty, cinematic feel that document the life of the people and the contrasts in architecture. I’ve tried to explore the various kinds of texture and light found in Glasgow and capture unusual moments that would otherwise pass unnoticed.”

Some of the collection has been featured in high-profile exhibitions around Scotland, most recently at the Royal Scottish Academy exhibition at the National Gallery.

“Exhibiting at Skypark is an opportunity to show my work beyond a traditional gallery space. I would like to

thank Skypark for showing my work - it’s an amazing space in an incredible building”, Robin added.

The exhibition will run from January to the end of February and is open 9-5pm.

One of Robin’s images ‘Glasgow Backstreets’ was featured at the RGI annual exhibition in Glasgow in 2013 and the SSA annual exhibition in Edinburgh last year. One of his street photographs was also used as the cover for legendary jazz guitarist John Scofield’s album ‘A Moments Peace’. He also had his own solo exhibition at The Hidden Lane Gallery, and was featured as part of FOTOSPACE photography gallery’s open submission exhibition earlier this year. His video ‘Latitude / Longitiude’ was featured in June’s Glasgow Short Film Festival’s Blueprint event at Glasgow Film Theatre.

huge thanks to everyone that took part and supported our charity zipslide in August… you raised £7k for Finding Your Feet and Cash for Kids, smashing our £5k target!!!

100 Skyparkers took on the sky high charity challenge with the X Factor’s Nicholas McDonald and quadruple amputee Corinne Hutton, when they ‘flew’ on a 320ft zipslide to raise vital funds for two charities, Finding Your Feet and Radio Clyde Cash for Kids.

11 amputees, calling themselves the ‘Airborne Amputees’, took part from Finding Your Feet, including Dot Fulton (73, lower leg amputee), Nikki Etheridge (27, lower leg amputee) and Corinne Hutton (44, quadruple amputee).

They were joined by Clyde 1 presenters Grant Thomson, Cassi Gillespie, Amber Livingstone and Calum Gallagher representing Cash for Kids.

Scottish X Factor runner up Nicholas Mcdonald who took part in the event said: “I was honoured to be asked to take part in the fundraising event for Finding Your Feet & Cash for Kids. A charity such as Finding Your Feet shows that even going through a life-changing experience doesn’t have to limit what you can do and it’s great to be able to support Cash for Kids and help raise vital funds for the younger generation who are going through tough times. Thanks to everyone for their support.”

Spotlight on…

The Scottish Young Carers Festival Did you know that three out of five of us will become carers at some stage in our lives and 1 in 10 of us is already fulfilling some sort of caring role?

Here, we shine the spotlight on Carers Trust Scotland, the largest provider of carers’ services across Scotland. The Trust staged the 9th Scottish Young Carers Festival in August and Louise Morgan, Young Carers Development Manager, explains the importance of this to the lives of young people and how they help to shape the future role of the Trust.

Louise said, “This year, 400 young carers from across 29 local authorities came together at the Broomlee Educational Centre in West Linton. The Festival provides them with the opportunity to share their experiences, the impact it has on them and to suggest improvements. Importantly, it provides respite from their caring responsibilities. Over its nine year history, this massive consultation has influenced the implementation of a national strategy, policy and guidance for young carers across Scotland.”

She continued, “A recurring theme is that young carers miss out on activities such as instrument tuition, homework clubs and pre-exam support clubs, plus time for fun and socialising. Worryingly, several young carers responded that “sleeping” was their favourite thing about the Festival, a stark reminder of the situation for some”.

Louise finished, “Their positivity drives us to deliver and develop more in the way of support and advocacy and we’re already planning for the 10th anniversary next summer! We

want this to be our best festival yet and it will be even better with your support!”

Mediation: happy employees, means productive employees

R

etaining staff and keeping costs down is one of the key areas of running a successful business. Joseph Kemp head of Peninsula’s HRFace2Face Consultants is helping businesses to grow through Mediation with a success rate at over 90%.

Joseph said, “We recently mediated in one complaint where the main source of contention was “employee ‘A’ failed to make me a cup of tea for employee ‘B’”! As strange as it sounds, these trivial matters can escalate quickly and may result in lengthy grievance procedures. Of course, when this happens, both the costs and time involved in dealing with them can spiral almost out of control, and the risk of resignations and constructive dismissal claims can rise.

“One session of HRFace2Face Mediation could therefore effectively ‘nip the problem in the bud’ and, by doing so, make employees see the other side’s point of view and, crucially, save your business a significant amount of time, stress, money and wasted resources in having to address things formally,” he finished.

Carmel raises £652 for Parkinson’s UK Café Deco’s Carmel Cuffe has raised an amazing £652 for Parkinson’s UK when she swapped all things barista in a 500 km cycle from Vietnam to Cambodia in October.

The challenge took Carmel from Ho Chi Minh City, through the rice paddies and waterways of Mekong Delta into Cambodia, pedalling to the Royal Temples of Angkor Wat. Carmel funded the challenge herself so all money raised goes directly to the charity. She said, “Every hour someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson’s and the Charity is leading the way to find a cure. They are closer than ever but their work is totally dependent on donations. It’s been tough training and a brilliant experience worth every moment. Thanks to everyone that donated and supported me.”

HML Raises £8,000 for Jamie C ongratulations to the team at HML who have raised the brilliant total of £8,000 for their colleague Jamie O’Hara.

In August, the staff were shocked by the tragic news that Jamie had been diagnosed with a rare form of terminal cancer aged just 26. Determined to help, Jamie’s colleagues at HML set about organising a number of events to raise as much money as possible.

Stephen Rooney of HML explains, “Following such terrible news, one of Jamie’s friends set up a donation page to raise funds to send Jamie, his partner Amanda and their two year old daughter Luna on a special holiday with the aim of creating as many wonderful memories for all of them, but for Luna in particular.

“First up, the three most popular members of the management team rounded off their week by braving a Friday ice bath in the car park while three managers took on the Skypark zip slide. The sponsorship forms for these challenges filled up rapidly!

The team also held a silent auction of site artwork, dress down Fridays, on

site cake sales and raffle of parking spaces added to the rapidly growing sum raised which was boosted still further by contributions from HMLs other sites across the UK. Stephen continues, “The final event held was a bake sale and tombola, which thanks to Skypark’s support, was held in the main reception in Skypark 1. The efforts of HMLs budding bakers produced a fantastic spread of biscuits and cakes that were snapped up by sweet toothed tenants. By the end of the morning, an amazing £1000 had been raised from the bake sale and tombola, including a very generous donation of £250 from Fleet Alliance.

“In total, HML contributed almost £8000 to Jamie’s fund which we know has gone a long way to giving Jamie and his family the special times they deserve. We’d like to thank Skypark and our fellow tenants, as well as our colleagues across other HML sites for their support and donations. Most of all, however, we’d like to say a massive well done to everyone working in HML Glasgow, who threw everything behind their colleague Jamie when he needed it and proved that it is indeed people that make our site special,” Stephen finished.

Clydesdale ARC Regatta 2016 Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club’s 14th Corporate Regatta saw crews from Skypark tenants, everis, SeaTec and V.Ships, along with another 9 companies from across Glasgow and the surrounding area, race against each other over 250m on the river Clyde at Glasgow Green. The SeaTec Crew finished 2nd in a close race!

Having completed their training over 7 weeks in the summer, and with dedicated coaches from the club, the crews learned much m ore than just the basics. This is a lesson for them in teamwork, trust, communication, resilience and sheer hard graft!

The emphasis on regatta day is very much on fun with some crews arriving in fancy dress, and family, friends, children and colleagues and even the odd CEO arriving to join in the party atmosphere. With face-painter, music & commentary throughout the day and a lunch time erg race and BBQ all ensuring that there is a real buzz about the Boathouse.

The winning crew was “Sgurrillaz” from Sgurr Energy, who collected their prizes from Polly Swann, Olympic silver medalist from the Women’s Eight.

The annual regatta event is a significant fundraiser for the rowing club. However the benefits for Clydesdale extend well beyond the day itself, with many participants becoming active members of the club and many of the coaches taking further steps down a coaching pathway.

Clydesdale ARC would like to thank all those who came down on the day to cheer on the crews and support the tea-bar. We would also like to thank Skypark for their support in attracting new companies to our event.

Fleet’s GBX Challenge for Maggie’s Centre Team Fleet have launched ‘Maggie’s GBX’ for their primary charity Maggie’s Centre and have raised over £120k since 2010.

This year, Grant Boardman takes the ‘saddle’ for “GBX” the extreme cycle challenge! Grant said “We’ve chosen to support Maggie’s as they provide vital services to people with cancer and their families. I launched the challenge in September with a 62 mile cycle from the Maggie’s centre in Edinburgh to Glasgow and pleased to say I’ve shed 2 stone in weight already! The next stage is a 12 hour Spinathon on Friday 9th of December 2016.”

Maggie’s Centres are places to find practical advice about benefits and eating well; places where qualified experts provide emotional support; places to meet other people; places where you can simply sit quietly with a cup of tea.

The first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and since then Maggie’s has continued to grow, with 17 Centres at major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK, online and abroad.

Last year Fleet Alliance’s David Blackmore, raised more than £13,000 after completing a multi-discipline challenge, called Maggie’s X3 in support of Maggie’s Centres (running, kayaking and cycling 168 miles in three days!).

Take comfort in new art exhibition Glasgow based artist and illustrator Jennifer Robertson will open her latest exhibition “Extrication” in Skypark’s donated gallery space. The collection of work is inspired by the way in which people take comfort from everyday situations by channelling the positive influences around them.

“Each piece of work within the exhibition represents various sources of comfort in life,” says Jennifer, “the means by which people can extricate themselves from negative situations, emotions and thought patterns. These include travel, nature and positive relationships with others. I find that inner strength is cultivated from, and galvanised by, the people, activities and environment you engage with.”

“I hope that people will be able to take some time out to visit the exhibition and be inspired by their own everyday situations as they go about their work” she finished.

Jennifer prefers to use dry media in her work, including Pro Markers, biro and pencil. She has exhibited widely across Glasgow, at such venues as The Six Foot Gallery, the Glasgow Art Club and the Argyll Chambers and has been commissioned to complete pieces of art by various organisations, including Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Phoenix Futures and the Paisley Local Historical Society.

The show runs from March to April 2017 and will comprise a mix of originals and large, high quality prints, all of new work.

Angus Coull, Bala Sport Who’s your style icon?

The late Malcolm McLaren for his ability to wear what he wanted when he wanted. When he needed to make an impact he looked great and was wearing checks with checks and tweed jackets way before anybody else. I admired his ability to make anti-establishment statements with what he wore too. Many years ago I presented a TV fashion series and got to respect the big name designers who I was lucky enough to meet like Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld etc. Now I admire people who can carry-off old pieces from thrift shops more.

What’s your most prized wardrobe item?

Paul McArdle, Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor and Sports & Remedial Massage Therapist Who’s your style icon?

It would probably need to be James Dean. An iconic American actor of the 50’s.

What’s your most prized wardrobe item?

I’m a bit of a hat guy. So my prized possession has got to be one of my stylish caps. There’s a great wee stall down in Camden market in London where I like to pick one or two up when I’m down there.

What’s your biggest fashion disaster?

No recent fashion disasters I’d like to think. Thinking back to my younger days as a Punk, my red fur waistcoat must take pole position as a fashion disaster. But it was the early 80’s after all!

I have a couple of designer suits hanging in the wardrobe but they’ve been there for years. The DKNY one still has the seagull pooh stain on it from the last time I wore it in 1995.

It was a lucky suit though, I was at an awards ceremony in London, and we won an award. Now though, it’s my Fairtrade Pants to Poverty pants and Bala branded t-shirts I care about. You really do feel better about yourself wearing something you know has been made ethically. I like my black hoody made with Fairtrade cotton too. I used to have fair trade jeans but I can’t get them anywhere in the UK. What’s your biggest fashion disaster?

I suspect every day would be seen as a fashion disaster for me by some. Maybe a man in his 50’s who co-runs a business shouldn’t wear jeans and a hoody to work, but it’s a sports business so I get away with it. I no longer wear the clashing colours I once did, but the gull poo and awards scenario spookily continued recently at the Inspiring City awards where I had white streaks down my suit jacket courtesy of another bird. Nobody said anything though and sadly we didn’t win.
