Welcome to the latest edition of Skyline our cosy Autumn/Winter issue, hats and scarves at the ready! It’s been a hectic summer here, where despite the weather it was great to see so many of you joining in our Mariachi street festival! Thank you to everyone that turned out and made it fun and make sure you take a peek at our photos on page 14. Congratulations to more of our rising stars who share their success stories; Filament PD, Dermalogica and Fleet Alliance have expanded here with us and we’re delighted that they are all staying part of the Skypark community! We’ve just heard that Pudsey is making a special appearance on 15th November when Paul McArdle’s Spin for Children in Need is back for local good causes. You can sign up now with Brian! RISING STARS FILAMENT PD LAUNCH NEW STUDIO SPACE
n this issue our congratulations go to the talented team at Filament PD, a specialist product design agency that focuses on connected products and IoT – Filament’s business is expanding and has just launched a contemporary studio space in Skypark!

The team work with clients that range from funded start-ups to global brands, many of which have secured funding through Scottish Edge a competition that supports entrepreneurial talent. Filament develops products across multiple sectors from digital health care, smart offices and consumer electronics to financial security. Craig Lynn, new business director of Filament PD brings us up to speed with connected hardware and IoT and all we need to know on the internet of things! “Alongside co-founders Danny Kane, design director and managing director Gregor Aikman, we started the business after leaving Product Design Engineering from the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University. We graduated in 2008 and set up another consultancy. Filament is our second company since graduating. We are proud of the new studio space and are committed to expanding the team over the coming years. The studio has the added benefit of being next door to our workshop, so as we can seamlessly move from design to making on a daily basis. “There are huge opportunities ahead for connected product design. The connected world is in the 3rd wave of development where physical and digital are converging to create connected hardware experiences. This happens through a network of internet connected objects that collect and exchange data. Our team of designers and engineers set out to understand from the outset the users’ needs, the technology and market to discover the insights that matter. Demand for connected product and data – the new ‘holy grail’ - is growing rapidly across multiple sectors and comes with the benefit of providing valuable information. “Our clients range from start-ups, CupClub and Beringar to global brands KBA and Tchibo”, explained Craig. “From concept to launch, we developed the first self-service M&S coffee machine, on behalf of brand Matthew Algie.

“We are currently at a really exciting development phase working with a number of companies. Through connected hardware in reusable cups and lids, CupClub provides a consumable as a service model which monitors and provides traceability of the use of their reusable coffee cups, providing valuable insights to suppliers and business owners not to mention the significant environmental benefits”. Notably, Filament’s client are award winning. CupClub has just won Fast Companies “Best UX design of 2019” and Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s “New Plastics Economy Innovation Prize in 2017.” Their client Sunstore Technologies, creators of a solar oven that enables off grid clean cooking, won the “Grand Prix and Gold Medal” by the Association of European Inventors at the 47th Salon International des Inventions.
“Businesses across all sectors from property, healthcare and security are starting to see the benefits of connected products and IoT. It comes with the benefit of providing valuable insights and information, on how connected products and even buildings operate in real life”, Craig finished.
Exciting times lie ahead for Filament with several ground breaking products in the development pipeline. Craig continued: “Beringar is developing a range of smart sensors that allows ‘buildings to talk’. These sensors feedback in real time how buildings are used by people, along with key environmental data; and KBA, a company that provides high security printing solutions, is creating a scanner aimed at detecting fraudulent bank notes.

STRONG TENANT GROWTH AT SKYPARK It’s been a hectic 6 months and we are delighted to announce that we have agreed 13 deals across new lettings and lease renewals, reinforcing strong tenant growth and retention at Skypark. Fleet Alliance is the latest company to expand here. The company has taken an additional 3,324 sq ft, on a 5 year lease to occupy a total of 9,939 sq ft. In addition, Dermalogica the skin care specialist has taken 2,037 sq ft on a new 5 year lease. Other notable new leases include Travel 2 that has signed to 17,936 sq ft and Startline has signed to 7,481 sq ft, while Filament PD has agreed on 2,348 sq ft in a recent expansion. Two new lettings have also been agreed in the Skyhub business centre on 347 sq ft and 590 sq ft. Furthermore, five companies have agreed regears to remain in the Skyhub on a total of 1,802 sq ft of office space.
12 months, which now sees Fleet Alliance manage over 37,000 vehicles worth a combined value of over £1billion. This gives us significant size in the leasing sector, and we don’t intend to stay still now. We are expecting greater growth in the coming months and the additional business space here at Skypark will provide the scope for us to accommodate this. We’re delighted to continue our strong relationship with the place we call our company’s home.” Caroline Callaghan of Dermalogica Training Academy that has been a long term Skypark tenant commented: “We are a Training Academy for all professional skin therapists who have opened accounts with Dermalogica. We train therapists up to Expert level within our brand and see in the region of 2,500 therapists per annum at the Academy. We have decided to remain at Skypark as it is in an excellent location, to accommodate our accounts who travel from all over the UK with access to car parking, Finnieston’s bars and restaurants and all of Skypark’s amenities.”

Outcomes Beyond Performance - the third exhibition from the Skypark and Glasgow School of Art Curatorial Fellowship took place on 13th September, featuring satellite models from the data and analytics company Spire, which collects data from space to solve problems on Earth. The models acted as linchpins to the artworks and performative actions. The exhibition was devised and led by Holly Knox Yeoman that will see the launch of an Outcomes Beyond Performance book in November, featuring creative writing responses from the student artists and invited workshop artists. Holly Knox Yeoman, exhibition leader, said: “The micro-residency took place over three days in May. Residencies, offer creative people, time and space away from their usual environment and obligations. It was structured through visits to Spire; studentled workshops; and workshops led by invited writers and artists Fritz Welch, Nikki Kane, Hussein Mitha and Naomi Garriock. This made a temporary-network - a constellation of exchange, experimental activity and responses occupying the meeting room and reception area of Skypark, exploring artistic practice and the creative economies' relationships to business, investment, innovation and technological advancement.” Commenting on behalf of Spire Global, James Pearson, head of global communications said: “Spire is an international company built from amazing local communities of brilliant people around the world. Scotland has become a vital part of the organic growth of that community, as Glasgow has produced more satellites than any other city in Europe, including the 100 launched from Spire. We hope our participation in this effort illustrates our edict to assure we equally support the growth of these communities that deeply support our most vital asset - our people."

NEW PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION:
Scotland’s Beauty
We’re delighted to welcome a new photography exhibition to Skypark 1 this autumn. The Society of Scottish Landscape Photographers present Scotland’s Beauty, a collection of stunning images of Scotland’s beautiful landscape featuring mountains, glens, lochs, coastlines and forests. The Society of Scottish Landscape Photographers is a collective based around the principles of quality, environmental awareness and the promotion of Scotland’s landscape. The membership represents some of the best photographers of the Scottish landscape currently active and the Society was formed for professionals and top quality amateurs, with many national and international awards winners, as well as major company ambassadors and nationally published photographers. The exhibition features the work of 20 of the finest landscape photographers in Scotland to showcase their work and the landscapes that inspire them. Several images were recognised in the latest Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year awards, that included the overall winner Allan Donald’s Shining Peak, Stob Coire nan Lochan, Glencoe and the landscape category winner Seán Kerr’s White Islands, Harris. Organiser of the event, Paul McArdle, personal trainer and Skypark tenant said: “We’re delighted to welcome back a very special guest Pudsey Bear, who will be cheering everyone on and available for photos. In return for a £5 donation, spinners can take turns to ride 20 minute slots, cycling for 90 miles in total; the equivalent of a return journey from Glasgow to Edinburgh. We hope to smash our £1,300 total that we raised last time. Every penny goes to Children in Need, to support projects and children in the local area. To celebrate #NationalCodingWeek (w/c 16 September), we caught up with two coding fans – Blair from Leidos and his mentee, Erin – to find out how they’re continuing to learn and develop their skills for future success…

Blair is an Application Support Analyst in the Emerging Capabilities team at Leidos, based in Skypark 1. He recently embarked on a Data Analysis course at digital skills academy, CodeClan (https://codeclan.com/)

“As part of the work Leidos is starting to do in the field of data science and engineering, I started a 14-week intensive course in Data Analysis at CodeClan. The course is aimed at people who perhaps don't work in IT but are looking to make a change in their career, or like me, have coding skills they’re looking to develop in a new area. I was a programmer in a previous company so when I found out there was an opportunity to build my skills and learn new languages I jumped at it. Following some pre-coursework to get everyone in our class to the same starting point, we’ve gotten to grips with the R and PostgreSQL languages, the language of statistics, we’ve learned from industry experts about data governance and quality, privacy and cybersecurity. We’ve been well looked after outside of class as well, including beer pong and pancakes! So I’m excited for what these new skills can do for my future but to then learn that my mentee Erin has found coding is her passion as well has doubled that excitement. The guidance I’ve tried to give her has centred round the idea that everyone needs to work so you may as well do something you enjoy, and I’m delighted Erin’s internship gave her a chance to try it and helped her realise what her next steps can be. Coding is never boring, there’s always another problem to solve, it affects every area of life, so there’s an incredible variety of fields to work in and creating solutions that have positive real world effects is immensely satisfying.”
“Before I started my Leidos internship, I wanted to be a marine biologist. I’d studied IT in school until 3rd year but following a few challenges in my class, I’d dropped it and switched to chemistry. I wasn’t really interested in computing at that point – it was just another subject. My internship changed all that!

During my internship, I was in a group with 7-8 other students learning step-by-step how to code a website. We all had different backgrounds so it was good being able to go through the training together but at our own paces. Problem solving skills were important; we were given a project brief but we had to come up with our own design solutions and figure out the best way to code them. I really enjoyed the challenge of all this (even when things went wrong and I found out it was due to one tiny little thing missing in my code!); being able to create something and see my work come together was really exciting. I never pictured myself having a career in IT but now I’m hoping to follow in my mentor, Blair’s, footsteps. For anyone else who’s interested in learning to code, I’d say go for it! There are loads of free online resources to help you get started, or you could try a course like Blair’s at CodeClan. Once you know how to code, you can do anything – from creating apps, games, all kinds of software, technology to help people… there are so many options open to you.”

LAUNCH FOODS APPEALS FOR JANUARY VOLUNTEERS Our resident charity Launch Foods is thanking all of Skypark’s volunteers that have stepped up to help feed Glasgow’s children and is appealing for volunteers to help in January when the school term begins in 2020.
Launch Foods began because Craig Johnson its founder could make no sense of the reasons why so much surplus food exists and yet every day children are going hungry. In just 48 weeks, Launch has provided 57,000 free meals to feed Glasgow’s primary school children in the communities that need it most. Launch’s food truck is providing in excess of 300 meals each day to primary school kids immediately after their school day. Launch is a 365 day operation including school holidays when it works with the charity Achieve More to provide their kids lunch each day over the holiday period. Craig Johnson the founder of Launch Foods said: “Every day hunger is a massive issue for children and families in many areas of Glasgow. Launch sets out to solve the issue of food surplus going to waste, throughout the year including school holidays to try to plug the gap. Thanks to everyone at Skypark that has volunteered so far, it’s been a great response! We would love it if more Skypark tenants could volunteer for January 2020 when the new school term begins to help on our food truck.”
Launch Foods is appealing to the Skypark community to volunteer just a few hours of their time to help them continue their work. They are looking for one or two volunteers a day for the new January term in 2020. If you can spare some time, please get in touch with Denise@launchfoods.org The meeting point is the Launch Foods unit on the ground floor of Skypark 5 (by the rear door entrance). You will be transported to the school and returned back to Skypark. You will be helping wrap the food for transporting to the school, handing out the food to the children from the Launch truck and then back to Skypark to help clear up. Can you help a young person realise their full potential and be defined by their talent, not their circumstances? All you need is one hour a week and a willingness to put a young person first. MCR Pathways will provide all the training and support you need. There are schools across Glasgow and surrounding areas where you can get involved.
Corien Staels, Managing Director of Wheel Air has recently signed up: "First hearing of MCR Pathways in the Skypark newsletter I just knew I had to get involved. It's not hard to remember what being a teenager was like and I know I would have benefited from having a mentor myself. Mentoring plays a big role in my journey as an entrepreneur, so why not pay it forward? Being involved with Notre Dame High School has been exciting so far, even though we're just getting started. Hearing how many young people in Scotland are still looking for a mentor hopefully makes it ever so clear to everyone else in Skypark to get involved too."

MACS ADVENTURE RAISE A WHOPPING £17,551 FOR GLASGOW CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL CHARITY Fraser MacRae, along with his Macs Adventure Colleagues, walked 40 miles in one day to raise vital funds for Glasgow Children's Hospital. Fraser tells us more about their challenge and the motivation behind supporting this great cause...

"Saturday 3rd August was simply unbelievable! Walking 40 miles while trying to pay attention to the logistics of 50 fellow walkers, problem solving and making changes along the way was one of the toughest things I have ever taken on. We had a plan in place and had prepared for every potential issue we could think of……except one. Who knew it could actually be sunny in Scotland!! It was scorching all day, which is never great for a ginger at the best of times! With the added hurdles the sunshine brought it helped to create an incredible atmosphere. "40 miles in a day is insane, walking 40 miles in 25° muggy heat, to be honest is madness! I am so proud of everyone involved and sincerely cannot thank them all enough! Our volunteer marshals and first aiders each went above and beyond the call of duty, standing in the baking sun, staying late into the night, encouraging and giving the necessary boost to some, lets be honest, fairly haggard faces. All of our walkers dug deep and powered through tough conditions, clawing, crawling and battling through the miles, determined to put themselves through the pain barrier for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital. They even kept going when the sun disappeared to be replaced by torrential rain for the final couple of hours. "Everyone of them is a hero and there is no one who could have given more. The result of all of their blood sweat and tears is that first of all, my name is mud in the office, but on top of that they have also raised an astounding amount of money! As it stands we will be handing a cheque to the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity of £17,551!! This includes an incredibly generous donation from Neil, the original Macs Adventurer, of £8500! "Everyone had their reasons for taking this on but my personal motivation for putting this together was my son, Arlo, who had a bit of tough start in life and is still a regular visitor the children’s hospital. Being able to carry him over the finish line and watch peoples reactions to seeing him smiling away on my back (while plucking what little remains of my hair out) will forever remain as one of my happiest moments of my life. "I am gobsmacked by the money we have raised and have never been prouder to work for Macs Adventure!"
