Fresh faces: If you’ve come through Skypark’s main reception recently, you’ll have noticed our new Concierge, Kelly Hughes, smiling up from the front desk. Kelly joined the Skypark team this summer, bringing with her the benefit of years of experience in the hospitality industry. Besides presenting a helpful, polished welcome to all, Kelly is helping us to deliver a five-star service to site. Her remit includes coordinating our new fitness classes, using your feedback to implement and refine new site services. Fresh enthusiasm: As I get to know more of the people and businesses based on site, I notice a common curiosity about your fellow tenants. Who else is here? What do they do? Is there potentially some business crossover? We have begun to share details of Skypark tenants’ work, events and victories on Twitter and Facebook, on site-wide posters and in site newsletters. We encourage you to support each other. Put 30 minutes aside to attend each other’s events and your efforts will certainly be appreciated and reciprocated. There’s a noticeable buzz growing on site. When our new internal website and tenants’ lounge are completed later this Autumn, you’ll have even more ways to take advantage of the business allies waiting on your doorstep. Opportunities abound! rior to Dermalogica’s recent Face Mapping® sessions for tenants, I went along for a trial session with one of their skin experts. Needless to say I felt very vulnerable when faced with the universally glowing skin of the therapists in their training suite, and even more vulnerable when my skin was inspected under a magnifying eyepiece. However, it was painless, enjoyable even! I did not get lectured for sleeping occasionally in my eyeliner or forgetting to moisturize. Instead I was given tasty Dermalogica sample packets and was able to ask lots of questions about exfoliating and sun damage and whether I was at the age to start using a heavy, ‘granny’ moisturizer. lasgow has been announced as the UK host city for Social Media Week September 2011. This positions Glasgow alongside a select group of participating cities including Berlin, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Rio De Janeiro and Milan, and offers a tremendous opportunity for Scotland to showcase its digital engagement and awareness to global peers. The week features 12 cities hosting multiple, FREE, simultaneous events that highlight the profound impact of social media on Society, Economy and Culture. Through the week, up to 50 events will take place in different locations around Glasgow, with subjects and partners from all sectors. Glasgow Education Services are always looking for help improving young peoples’ employability skills. You can help secondary-aged mainstream and special needs pupils through a host of business engagement projects such as: mock interviews, work experience, careers events, building CVs & filling in application forms, delivering inspirational talks, school/workplace visits, mentoring and shadowing, curriculum related projects (e.g. financial education, engineering and technical drawing, Dragons’ Den, art & marketing). Led by Clare Buchanan The Pilates mat class relies more on callisthenic-style exercises and stretches similar to a yoga class. The emphasis is on physical change rather than postures and breathing. Pilates focuses on developing the core strength inside the body and elongating the spine. This form of pilates builds strength without attaining bulky muscles. It will help in strengthen and lengthen muscles, enhancing muscle elasticity and joint mobility. Pilates will help you develop a flat abdomen and a strong back. eet Kate Lampitt Adey, a recent Glasgow School of Art (GSA) graduate from Hexham. Kate decided the GSA was for her after visiting the end of year degree show and falling in love with the work and the Mackintosh building, steeped in history. Similarly, it was Kate’s exhibition at this year’s degree show that led us to hunt her down for an exhibition at Skypark. Her textile art, stretched on oversized quilting hoops, stopped us in our tracks. The work exudes a homespun charm, with sneaky mathematical and medical elements. Where do your image titles come from…Ocularmotor? I prefer scientific names, parts of the human body such as Coronary Crown and Ocular Motor. I also use historical references. One of my big hoop pieces is called ‘As my heart shall warm your heart, so my mind shall warm your mind,’ after an 18th century historic sampler. There is also ‘Embroidery has a Loophole,’ a quote from Charlotte Bronte, a subtle commentary on women eavesdropping on life as they embroider. Where does the medical and mathematical influence come from? I’ve always been drawn to scientific imagery and maps… a simple graph interpreted by the right person can share a lot of information about the world. Do you work exclusively in textiles? I have three styles of work – embroidery stretched on hoops, geometric thread woven in mathematical patterns on hoops, and mathematical paintings on antique ceramics. I’m a bit of a hoarder, which is where the paintings on antique ceramics come from! Ultimate exhibition space? In the biology department of a university… or somewhere like Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, as they have an extensive collection of antique tapestries. Career highlights thus far – A couple were visiting the degree show on a first date and he, clearly a romantic, bought her one of Kate’s china artworks as a present.

Dream job? I’d like a few different roles for balance - curating a museum collection, lecturing, and time in an isolated studio to carry on with my artwork. What’s up next? I’m starting my Master’s in Dress and Textile History at Glasgow University in September. Kate’s work can be seen in Skypark’s main reception until mid October.
