Have ‘no fear’ Sans Peur is here! In this issue we meet Paul Gisbey, managing director and one of the founders of Sans Peur a new company at Skypark. Sans Peur was established in 2011 and has four staff based in the office, each from an ex-military background. The company was founded to provide a spectrum of security solutions to vessels trading in High Risk Areas (HRA) with recognised pirate activity around the world. Sans Peur is the only UK company to operate in Nigerian waters and it has recently acquired new business to look after super yachts operating in Asia. The company also provides on land close protection services for VIPs from various industries.
Paul Gisbey MD, tells us what attracted Sans Peur to Skypark. Paul explains “Apart from the great soup in the café and the friendly atmosphere, we are delighted to be situated in one of the Glasgow skyline’s most iconic modern buildings. There is also a shipping community in Skypark so I feel that can only be positive for Sans Peur.” Paul goes on to give the background to the name of the business and an overview of what they get involved in, “Sans Peur simply means, ‘without fear’ in French. As I understand, the term was introduced by the Norman Vikings and was used as a motto for the Sutherland clan in the Highlands of Scotland. It was then adopted as a motto by The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders with which both Lachlan and I served with distinction in the likes of Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq amongst others. We felt this fitted well with our values and what we are trying to achieve and what we stand for.” “Sans Peur provides ex-British military guards on vessels trading within the HRA which is any area with recognised pirate activity. The HRA is increasing all the time as pirates venture further out from the Somalian coastline. Any vessels trading in this area are at major risk so we firmly believe that armed security teams are the only proper way to protect crew
Network know how If you’re thinking about establishing a business networking group at Skypark then we can help you get this off the ground, give you a meeting space and even help you to promote it! It can be whatever you want it to be from an informal breakfast to a coffee break. There’s a bottle of champagne up for grabs to the first Skypark company that gets our networking group off the ground. Inspired? Lisa@skypark-glasgow.com is open to ideas!
and cargo alike. We have invested a lot over the last year to get the appropriate licenses throughout the HRA and have an excellent infrastructure in place to grow the business. “We will protect any vessel that is entering the HRA. We are the preferred security provider with a large commercial ship management company but we are also on the panel of providers for 2 superyacht companies in Asia who operate in the Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius which are all within the HRA or very close proximity; this is an area of the market we are very excited about.” Paul finishes, “We are the only security company in the UK licensed to operate in Nigerian waters and we also offer in-port security; our licence is granted by the Nigerian authorities (exclusively). We are currently quoting for a shipping company in Turkey who want vessels protected during their stay in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Again, this is a new area of the market and we are the only UK company licensed to do this.” Further information is available from: allan@sanspeur.co.uk or by phone at any time: +44 (0)7958 007 685. GO SOCIAL @SKYPARK: Calling all social media rookies If you’re feeling baffled by the hype around social media, then all that’s about to change. From the 24th to 28th September, Skypark will transform into a venue as it plays host to Social Media Week 2012 and all social media rookies at all life’s ages and stages are invited to take part in this FREE worldwide event!
24-28 September
SMW will showcase Glasgow as a major hub for the world’s largest and most Tim Wright, Twintangibles international social media happening exploring the social, cultural and economic impact of social media. The city will be participating alongside 15 other iconic locations including Los Angeles, Barcelona, Vancouver, Chicago, Seoul, Hong Kong and Berlin. Tim Wright, one of the event organisers, gives the low down on what’s in it for Skypark companies and employees that want to learn more but don’t know where to start. Tim says “This year’s theme is about everyone gaining access to social media, empowering change through collaboration and making use of these technologies. “It’s not just for marketing people and it’s not just about Facebook and Twitter – it’s about a proactive way of transforming access to education, employment, health and well being and social inclusion. This is a superb opportunity for companies and their employees to find out more about how social technologies can introduce big changes in the work place or in their personal lives. The events are free, incredibly diverse and you can hold your own event as well. If you want to know more then get in touch with me or just visit the website at www.socialmediaweek.org/glasgow.” Last year Glasgow held 118 free events in 5 days featuring internationally renowned speakers and global brands like Nokia and Google, making it one of the most successful cities in the history of the movement. The novel crowd sourced format means the majority of the free events are created by its participants, ensuring diversity, inclusion and creativity. Skypark will hold a series of events, including a PeoplePerHour networking event for the creative industry - devised and hosted by Th!nkFrog Marketing here on-site. The event will be the first of its kind in Glasgow to allow instant connectivity with fellow networkers using QR codes. Using the networking space as an interactive art gallery, freelancers will be given the choice to visually display their work and power social interaction via the use of QR codes - a barcode that provides an easy link to finding more information online using a smart phone.
Aylish Jarvie of PeoplePerHour, the website that connects small business owners with freelancers explains: “We’re excited about the opportunity to meet some of our Glaswegian users; in fact Louise at Th!nkFrog Marketing is one of them! This event is also a great chance for people to try a new kind of networking; showcasing their work rather than just telling people what they can do and we’re really excited to be a part of Social Media Week Glasgow.”
Louise Graham of Th!nkFrog Marketing says: “Having attended many networking events we identified an opportunity to bring creative talent to life through thinking differently about the way we connect offline with the online community. 2012 sees the trend for #point&know – a growing need for people to be able to simply engage with a message via one click. It seemed alien to me that networking events have not evolved past the “Business bumph table” to a more interactive approach. With this idea we approached PeoplePerHour and Social Media Week, Glasgow seemed to be a perfect opportunity to launch our new concept. For anyone interested in getting involved you can register here socialmediaweek.org/blog/event/people-per-hourmeet-up-hosted-by-thnkfrog-marketing or contact victoria@ thinkfrogmarketing.co.uk or Louise on 07500 660522.” The hub lounge and other events will be held on the 6th floor of Skypark 1 throughout the week, some of these events include: ‘Why your boss should love social media’ hosted by Keith McMean on 24th September ‘PeoplePerHour Meet Up’ hosted by Th!nkFrog Marketing on Thursday 27th September ‘Crowdfunding – what’s next?’ hosted by Twintangibles on 28th September Keep up to date with SMW events news here socialmediaweek.org and facebook.com/skyparkglasgow For further information contact: Tim Wright +44(0)7717 714 595 | tim@twintangibles.co.uk twintangibles is a business advisory, research and consultancy company based in Glasgow helping organisations derive value for the use of social technology. Glasgow School of Art Degree Show This summer Skypark featured as a sponsor and an exhibition space for the Glasgow School of Art’s (GSA) Degree Show 2012. We also played host to the one and only ‘alternative’ street party. The Skypark campus featured work by over 200 graduating students incorporating Communication Design, Fashion and Textiles, Interiors, Silversmithing and Jewellery, Product Design and Product Design Engineering. The Degree Show showcased work by a new generation of talent following in the footsteps of celebrated fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, PDE graduates Andy Lauder, Design Manager for Apple in the USA and Jonathan Biddle, Design Manager for Kindle/Amazon – USA, and more. Among the award-winning designs on show this year was ‘Dementia Dog’ a feasibility study looking at the benefits that dogs can bring to people with dementia. Since winning the Design Council’s Living Well With Dementia Challenge the project has received funding from both the Design Council and Scottish Government and is now running in collaboration between Alzheimer Scotland, Dogs for the Disabled, Guide Dogs UK and Glasgow School of Art designers. Angela Higgins, Skypark’s asset manager said: “As a passionate supporter of the city’s artistic heritage we are proud that Skypark was a sponsor and a venue for this year’s degree show. It’s refreshing that such creative talent is here and we hope that our businesses and talent will find it mutually beneficial to be alongside one another. We’re looking forward to next year’s show already.”

Vision Africa opens first UK children’s photography exhibition at Skypark
A showcase of talent by the next Kenyan generation A Scottish family is celebrating 10 years of founding its Kenyan charity – Vision Africa – by holding a first showcase exhibition of children’s photography called ‘Through My Eyes’ at Skypark running to the 16th September. The exhibition set to tour the UK, USA and Kenya, will feature a body of work created by Kenyan children aged from 3 to 20, giving a child’s eye view of the things they love or are important to them while showcasing the talent of the next generation. Vision Africa is a UK based children’s charity working with orphaned and disadvantaged children in Kenya. The charity was founded by a Scottish couple John and Vera Packard in 2001 and is now helmed by their grand-daughter Deborah Kimathi in Kenya. The exhibition has been created by her UK-based brother Philip Ross who has his own company Safehinge Ltd on-site. John and Vera Packard founded Vision Africa after spending two years in Kenya working at a children’s home, inspired by people with a passion for making a difference in their own communities.
13 Unit in Kandara and the oldest attend our four Seed of Hope vocational training centres. We hope that everyone in Scotland will enjoy this unique insight in to our work and the lives of the children of Kenya and will consider supporting their future through Vision Africa. It is a privilege for us to showcase the talent of these amazing young people. They have so much potential but are simply lacking opportunities.” Philip Ross explains how he is involved in shaping the charity’s future. Philip says: “Vision Africa was founded by my grandparents and their work has been a big part of my life. I want to continue to support the charity and see it grow and succeed. I know how lucky I was with my own education providing the basis for setting up my own company that designs useful products. I believe the best way to help the children and youth in places such as the Kibera slum in Nairobi is to provide quality education and training that will allow them to work their way out of poverty. It is the least I can do to show my gratitude for the support I have received in my own life and business.” “I have been unable to contribute much to the charity over the past 5 years while I have been getting my own business - Safehinge based here at Skypark - off the ground. I wanted to help out in a way I know best by creating a great event and ‘selling’ the charity and their fantastic work to as many new people as possible. It is also a great way to utilise the skills I have learned in my own business and to do good with it. “Deborah and I, and on behalf of all of the children who took part would like to thank Skypark for helping us to host ‘Through My Eyes’. With over 3,700 people based here it’s a great opportunity to showcase the children’s work and hopefully bring new supporters to help secure the future of charity.” The charity was set up to improve resources and facilities so that the couple could build projects that would have a long-term, positive impact on the neediest children and youths of grass root Kenyan communities. Deborah Kimathi, field director of Vision Africa outlines the aims and the work of the charity: “We work with approximately 3800 children throughout the year and provide care, shelter, food or education for over 1800 needy children and youths on a daily basis. Our aim is to empower community based organisations to facilitate growth, enhance services and work towards giving a brighter future to their children and their communities. We do this by partnering with children’s and youth projects. The core of everything we do is to ‘Give a Child a Future’ and this means building that future through provision, protection and preparation. “As part of Vision Africa’s tenth anniversary celebrations we wanted to give our supporters the opportunity to learn more about our work with children in Kenya and give a true insight into the lives of the children. “The most important people at the projects that we partner with are the children and youths and we decided that they should be the ones to showcase the projects. We gave a group of children from each project a camera and asked them to each take photographs of five things they feel are important or that they love. “The photographers ranged in age from three years to twenty years. Photographs were taken at projects throughout Kenya with a variety of landscapes from slums to semi-arid areas. The results were amazing so we decided to take a selection of the photographs and create the “Through My Eyes” exhibition which will tour Kenya, the UK and the USA. “Our young photographers are based at thirteen projects throughout Kenya. The youngest are from the St Andrews Baby
Angela Higgins, asset manager of Skypark said: “We are delighted to welcome ‘Through My Eyes’, to Skypark and are thrilled to help celebrate the amazing work of Deborah’s and Philip’s family and the children of Vision Africa. “Our ethos is to build a thriving community for tenants to enjoy and as part of that we support many good causes. We wanted to help Philip and Deborah by not only giving space to the exhibition but to mark its significance by opening it up to local school children as an activity to take part and enjoy. Glaswegian children will be invited to view the exhibition to see how children in Kenya are growing up. The children will help to create phase 2 of the exhibition by taking their own photos of things they love or are important to them. Overall it will aim to show the similarities and differences between children living in Glasgow and Kenya and widen support for Vision Africa by reaching a new audience.” The exhibition is held in Skypark 1 Reception Gallery until 28th September. www.vision-africa.org

Friday 22nd June dawned wet and miserable. Then it decided to pour with rain and thunder and lightning at 4pm - just in time for our Four Seasons Olympics. Our planned activities outside had to be abandoned. However, we had plan B! We decorated a large room indoors with flags and posters the children had designed, marked out the starting line, got out the microphone and were ready to welcome a very large turnout of families. The Busy Bees (our 3-5’s) ran flat races and a hurdles race which was rather reminiscent of the Grand National with falls and missed fences! The Jelly Tots (2-3’s) ran an exciting flat race. There were parent and child races where it was sometimes difficult to see who was leading who. However, the most competitive races were those for the parents – some really wanted to win! All this was followed by afternoon tea with home baking provided by parents and the nursery children who had been busy preparing that morning. Families enjoyed the opportunity to chat together, make new friends and watch their children play. The day was rounded up with a Busy Bees Winners’ Ceremony the children mounted the rostrum to great applause. Each child was then presented with a medal for taking part in the Olympics in true Four Seasons style with fun, enjoyment and challenge.
