SUCCESS FOR LEIDOS SCHOOLS’ SHOWCASE OF STEM CHALLENGES 2023!

It’sbeen a brilliant year for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) collaboration, which culminated in a number of local schools taking part in a showcase event on Thursday 15th June at Skypark!

The showcase event was the finale of the 2022/23 Education Industry Partnership (EIP) programme, run collaboratively by STEM education charity SSERC and global technology company Leidos, that aims to get young people engaged in STEM subjects and careers by bringing industry and education together.

Based in Leidos’ UK headquarters in Skypark, Fiona Keady (Talent Development Business Partner and STEM Group Chair) explains:

“As well as showcasing and celebrating what they have learned, it was a great opportunity for the young people to build their confidence and communication skills by speaking to people they have never met before and answering questions on the spot. Afterwards, the pupils were rewarded with award certificates, a special gift and a trip to the IMAX!”

Leidos funds the programme, including the schools’ travel, teacher cover, showcase day, gifts and the IMAX visit, to make sure there are no barriers to schools getting involved. After the summer, the 2023/24 programme will launch to find a new set of teams. Applications are welcome from local schools, from Primary 6/7 to Secondary School S1/S2/S3 level.

Fiona continues: “Our 6 schools in the 2022/23 EIP programme were Cleveden, Jordanhill, Shawlands, St Andrew’s, St Margaret’s and Woodfarm. The showcase involved all the school teams demonstrating what they have learned and achieved throughout the programme over the past seven months with the help of their Leidos mentor.
