COLOR THEORY APPLICATION

Color plays an integral role in to how the primary goals and objectives of the design were achieved. In order to create a holistic interior that integrates and celebrates, community, culture, and traditions, color was carefully considered. A warmer palette featuring hues of yellow and red pay homage to traditional Kenyan tribe colors. The Masai people believe the color red to be a symbol of power and strength, considering it their most important color. It is often portrayed in a plaid, patchwork pattern. This pattern is replicated on to the tile flooring of the main circulatory spaces to not only contribute to wayfinding, but to further integrate the vernacular culture. Yellow is symbolic of happiness in traditional tribal culture, and therefore promotes user well-being. Blues and greens have traditional connotations of learning and growth. These cooler tones also act as balance for the warmer color side of the color palette. Color application is most heavily seen in material and finish selections, as pictured above. Black, white, and other neutral tones reflect the physical landscape that is so valued in Nairobi, and the surrounding country.
