TYPOLOGY DEEP DIVE

It is believed that the majority of global issues could be resolved with the improvement and spread of education to marginalized groups of people, specifically in developing countries, such as Kenya. A necessary aspect of this global initiative is to erect and improve educational infrastructure. There are many existing projects that are aimed at tackling the education infrastructure issue with the restrictions of a developing countries limited budget and resources. Many of these projects place a focus on the exterior structure, but neglect the interior details that facilitate the everyday use of the building.

Educational institutions have a lengthy and complex history. There are multiple levels, divisions, and categories that have emerged over time. Preparatory schools evolved in the United States prior to the Civil War as a means to further assemble student learning in preparation of upper level education and/or careers.

Because prep schools target a specific demographic, they are most often found in urban centers. This is a result of proximity to higher education institutions as well as job opportunities. This type of project would achieve the most impact in a highly populated and culturally diverse city in a developing country. That is why the chosen site is in Nairobi, Kenya.

Major pragmatic considerations for this type of project include the different types of classroom environments and which is best suited for the target user group. Additionally, specific facilities, and their respective furniture, fixtures, and equipment, such as computer and science labs are also a primary consideration. The schedule and curriculum of each student may vary, so transitional spaces and furniture are essential.
