N AT U R A L L I G H T G A L L E R Y: 1. This gallery is the main attraction of the museum, not only for its central location, but also due to it’s double height ceilings, and the large s k y l i g h t a b ove . Ke e p i n g t h e core material palette for this g a l l e r y, t h e n a t u r a l l i g h t f r o m above becomes the main material for the space, characterizing the gallery as a whole. Archways on every wall allow for easy circulation throughout, and the balcony above allows guests to r e c e i v e p r i v a c y, w h i l e maintaining proximity to the skylight.

D I G I TA L G A L L E R Y: 2. This digital gallery is the completely dark space within t h e m u s e u m . To s h i f t p e o p l e s attention to the artwork, an LED wall is used to display moving digital art. In order to combat the darkness of the space, leather ottomans are placed throughout the gallery to offer a soft, comforting seat to relax in. With guests entering through one side of the space and exiting through a n o t h e r, a p a r a m e t r i c c e i l i n g is installed so that guests feel naturally led to follow it towards the exit.

AMBIENT CAFE / BAR: 3. This cafe space serves as a middle ground for light, as it receives natural light from the arched doors, yet also uses various forms of artificial light, such as cove lighting, back lighting, chandeliers, and LED strips. Materials such as dark gray marble, toned metal, and iron create a balance between light and dark in the space, making it the perfect place to transition from one gallery to the next, or enjoy a view of the waterfront.

COMMUNITY INCLUSION: The mixture of rough, dark, and durable materials with soft, light, patterned materials offers a balanced contrast in the space, and reflects the balance of ambient light as well. Mixing the core materials found throughout the museum with more reflective, eye catching materials makes the space more hospitable and exciting for the guests that occupy it.

PLAN: The Cafe is the perfect place for people to connect as it’s accessible from the o u t d o o r g a l l e r y, waterfront trail, 2nd f l o o r g a l l e r y, o r museum entrance. These various points of entry create diversity amongst visitors, blending museum goers and community members alike.

1. Natural Environment: The cafe capitalizes on its connection with the outdoors by incorporating patio space, and large arched doors, bringing those from the outside in.

2. Social Setting: The cafe is designed to be a place of refuge for guests inside the museum, as well as for community members. It’s created to serve as a place for connection, research, and relaxation amongst guests, while experiencing the best of both artificial and natural light.

3. Circulation: The layout of seating within the cafe is strategic with the goal of increasing socialization and circulation throughout the space. Barstool seating is designed to promote conversation amongst guests, while the circular booth seating achieves circulation and movement in the space.

B u t t h i s doesn’t need to be the case, as most students desire to live on campus, embracing dorm life and the amenities that come with it. So as Boston’s housing crisis continues to worsen due to an influx of college students moving off campus, a shared living space amongst universities for students presents itself as the perfect solution.

C O N C E P T: This property takes every aspect of current dorm life, and elevates it to become a more hospitable environment for students to connect and thrive in. Inspired by Boston’s diverse student population, this property embraces the building’s historic past, while making space for the youth to create their own future. Encapsulating the authentic, American college experience that those from around the world come to Boston to embrace, this property becomes a melting pot that fosters new ideas and connection with others to inspire innovation for the future.

As guests travel up through the building, each level becomes increasingly more private. The first floor is rooted in lively socialization, seen in the lobby and bar areas. When guests make their way to the second and third floors, the amenities become very group oriented and active in nature. Once students make their way to the fourth floor they’re surrounded by communal living spaces. This floor serves as the middle ground between public amenity spaces, and private residential rooms. This organization makes traveling through the building easy and understandable, allowing guests to associate each floor with its proper function.

The materials for this space include a vast array of bold, moody colors, along with dynamic eye catching patterns, making each room the residents walk into a unique experience. Inspired by Boston’s diverse student population, and the site’s historic location, wallpaper and artworks have been chosen to represent Boston’s extensive culture and long lasting reputation as a global center for higher education. As students make their way throughout the building lively materials will be utilized in every room, encapsulating the American college experience for those that live inside.

The transition from public to private spaces is evident in this diagram, which describes each student’s personal experience as they travel through the building to their rooms. The communal living floor buffers this transition from public socialization to complete privatization, with this level being defined by personal interactions made between residents as they complete everyday tasks like cooking and c l e a n i n g t o g e t h e r.
