N AT U R A L L I G H T G A L L E R Y : 1. This gallery is the main attraction of the museum, not only for its central location, but also due to it’s double height ceilings, and the large skylight above. Keeping the core material palette for this galler y, the natural light from above becomes the main material for the space, characterizing the galler y. Archways on ever y wall allow for easy circulation throughout, and the balcony from above allows guests to receive privac y, while maintaining proximity to the skylight.
D I G I TA L G A L L E R Y : 2. This digital gallery is the completely dark space within the m u s e u m . To s h i f t p e o p l e s attention to the artwork , an LED wall is used to display moving digital art. In order to combat the darkness of the space, leather ottomans are placed throughout the galler y to offer a soft, comforting seat to relax in. With guests entering through one side of the space and e x i t i n g t h r o u g h a n o t h e r, a parametric ceiling is installed so that guests feel naturally led to follow it towards the exit.
AMBIENT CAFE / BAR 3. This cafe space serves as a middle ground for light, as it receives natural light from the arched doors, yet also uses various forms of artificial light, such as cove lighting, back lighting, chandeliers, and LED strips. Materials such as dark gray marble, toned metal, and iron create a balance between light and dark in the space, making it the perfect place to transition from one galler y to the next, or enjoy a view of the waterfront.
COMMUNITY INCLUSION: The mixture of rough, dark , and durable materials with soft, light, patterned materials offers a balanced contrast in the space, and reflects the balance of ambient light as well. Mixing the core materials found throughout the museum with more reflective, eye catching materials makes the space more hospitable and exciting for the guests that occupy it.
PLAN: The Cafe is the perfect place for people to connect as it’s accessible from the outdoor galler y, waterfront trail, 2nd floor galler y, or museum entrance. These various points of entr y create diversity amongst visitors, blending museum goers and community members alike.
1. Natural Environment: The cafe capitalizes on its connection with the outdoors by incorporating patio space, and large arched doors, bringing those from the outside in.
2. Social Setting: The cafe is designed to be a place of refuge for guests inside the museum, as well as for community members. It’s created to serve as a place for connection, research, and relaxation amongst guests, while experiencing the best of both artificial and natural light.
3. Circulation: The layout of seating within the cafe is strategic with the goal of increasing socialization and circulation throughout the space. Barstool seating is designed to promote conversation amongst guests, while the circular booth seating achieves circulation and movement in the space.
