HOW TO

THE PRODUCTS Bentonite Clay - Umoyo

Bentonite clay is a great product that acts as a sponge and absorbs toxins, dirt and oil from your skin. The Umoyo bentonite clay comes in a Ziploc-like bag secure enough to hold the contents. I started by wetting my face and then made a paste by mixing the bentonite clay with water and gently applying it on my face in an upward motion to lift my skin. The paste felt cool and smooth and as it started to dry my face felt tight. I left it on my face for 15 minutes but you can keep it on for up to 20 minutes. After I washed it off, my face felt fresh, clean and soft.

Aloe Face Toner - TiEd By Nature

A face toner removes any trace of dirt or impurities that may be left on your skin after it’s been washed. A face toner also smooths your skin and can help improve your skin tone. The TiEd By Nature aloe face toner comes in a spray bottle for easier application and that way you can limit how much you use. I used cotton pads for application and I simply spritzed some aloe toner onto the cotton pad and used to apply it on my face in upward circular motions. The aloe face toner is packed with essential oils but still left my face feeling cool and it was not oily. It was quickly absorbed into my skin and left my skin feeling moisturised.

Hey Sis! Acne, blackheads, oily skin or dry skin, when you’re a teenager, it seems like a constant battle to keep skin clear and glowing. We gotchu! Last issue we gave you tips on how to have beautiful summer skin. This time round, we’re following up by trying and testing a few local Zambian products that use natural ingredients. Natural skincare products are a great option if you have sensitive skin or just don’t like your beauty products to contain harsh chemicals. Many natural ingredients can help improve the look, feel and texture of your skin. SKY writer Chanda Chibale put on a brave face and volunteered to try and test three Zambian brands that use natural based ingredients. Here’s what she found:

Oily Skin Face Cream - Vero’s Cosmetics

Face cream is good and the best kind you can get is moisturizer that is hydrating and is easily absorbed into your skin. Vero’s Cosmetics comes in a small tub with a plastic cover on the inside to stop products from spilling. I applied it on my face by putting a little bit on my finger and massaging it into my skin using circular and upward motions. The moisturizer has a cooling effect, easily absorbs skin and is non- oily. The overall effect was that my skin felt well hydrated and felt smoother.

So there you have it, three beauty products that you could try to help you get or keep that glowing skin. Just a reminder that using the right products is only one way to get glowing skin.

Doing the following things will also help you keep the glow:

SETTING UP

THE TEST

My first step was to develop a skincare routine. I decided that I would follow a routine involving a mask, toner and lastly face cream. 10

Drink lots of water - it helps improve skin tone, reduces puffiness, can prevent acne and can relieve dry itchy skin

Stay smoke-free - Smoking tobacco in cigarettes or shisha does so many bad things to your skin. It can make acne worse. It can also make your skin dry and leathery, making you look older than you are. Eat skin-friendly foods - eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains like roller meal, brown rice and bread.

Manage Stress - Who hasn’t had a stress break out? Find ways to keep stress in check by finding what helps you stay balanced. It could be taking a walk, talking to a friend, writing in a journal or praying.

Dear Ann, It's 2008 and I know you are preparing for your Grade 9 exams. This is the year you start your periods, the year you find a lifelong friendship and the year that's the most confusing. You are not a feminist yet, you are obsessed with reading novels and listening to music. You have a crush on a boy who you will forever be embarrassed that you liked. You and your mother argue a lot. You will be 14 until August 2009 and I would like to give you a few tips on how to survive 14. The first thing is don't be afraid to ask for help when it comes to a lot of things. When you are confused about school, friends, your body and the people you meet, recognize those around you who don't seem judgemental and ask for their help. Create good female friendships, society will tell you having too many female friends is bad but that's how the Patriarchy tries to separate us, they are afraid of our power. Having a good sisterhood is what will save you in life. Read more books about powerful women and let that inspire you, Google feminism and read about how it's a movement to make society equal and how it helps girls have equal opportunities.

Be kind to yourself first and it will teach you how to be kind to others. Always prioritise your mental health and be nicer to your siblings. Don't forget to be a child, have fun and live a happy life. You want to create memories and live a happy life. Happiness should be your number one goal, you did not come to earth to suffer. You and your mother will stop arguing one day, you are a teenager and your mother is an African mum, it will take a while for you to both understand each other. Be ambitious, always shoot for the stars. Anything a boy can do, a girl can do better. Don't forget to study and take education seriously, it will open so many doors for you. And lastly you will hear the term "a lady should always be seen and not heard" - roll your eyes at such statements, I want you to know that a girl should always be heard because your words will transform the lives around you. Don't let the world take your voice away.

Love

Ann

CELEBRITY INSIDER

WITH

SKY: Please tell us a bit about yourself and career in music NEZ: Well, I go by the name Nez Long. My real name is Martin Moyo. Music is something I’ve always loved and wanted to do. I started out in high school and after I completed, I decided to take it to the studio but it was frustrating because most of them prioritized famous people. So I decided to set up my own studio and that was the beginning of Blackout Media which has brought about artists like Mr. Stash, Daev Zambia and contributed to the growth of Bobby East. I continued to improve as time went by and well, here we are today.

SKY: How did you come up with your stage name and what does it mean? NEZ: ‘Nez’ comes from Martinez (my name is Martin). This AKA came from my sister who is probably my biggest fan by the way. ‘Long’ was a name given to me in high school. People would make fun of me because I was skinny and tall. My mom taught me to adopt it because then the bullies would have nothing to use against me. I put these two names together and that’s how Nez Long came about. SKY: Do you ever sing/spit bars in the shower? NEZ: Well, I don’t think there’s any artist who doesn’t do

that. Most times, creatives get into their best element when they are in private spaces like the shower. That alone time gives you a chance to think more deeply and brings out a different side of your creativity. I’m actually the type of person that goes into the bathroom with my phone and whenever I come up with lines, I literally pause my shower and I record them.

SKY: We know this might be a weird one but if you were a biscuit, which one would you be and why? NEZ: I’m not much of a sweet tooth but I know I’m a sweet guy so if I were a biscuit, I’d probably be the sweetest biscuit on the market. Do you guys remember the famous lyrics “All men are trash, she said. Pilikiti love ine teti.” Yeah?! We had the opportunity to sit down with the amazing man behind the hit; Nez Long and were so happy to have him as our celebrity feature for this issue. Here’s the inside scoop; His Thing:

them. If they’re not willing, let them be, stick to your lane and work hard towards what you want to achieve. Also, never be limited by the fact that you’re a girl. Have courage, enthusiasm and focus. Never give up on your dreams!

SKY: Who is your celebrity crush? NEZ: She’s actually someone very close to me. Her name is Xaven and I be crushing on her too much!

SKY: What’s the one thing you can’t live without? NEZ: Probably a house without a studio. Since I decided I was going to make music, I’ve never lived in a house without a studio.

SKY: If you were a superhero, what would your super power be? NEZ: Probably mind reading because I take time to listen to people and have conversations. I think I’ve done that so well that reading minds would probably be my super power. SKY: Any tips on how to get noticed by a girl? NEZ: I must say girls/women always know what they want

but they don’t want to make a guy feel like he’s getting it easy. So you have to do something to show that you are worthy of her attention. Dress well, smell fresh and be confident.

SKY: What’s your most embarrassing childhood moment? NEZ: I was at my grandmother’s place in Matero, it was

one of those days where you leave home early in the morning without telling anyone where you’re going. I spent the whole day playing soccer with my friends. Around 17, we were heading back home and I met my grandma along the way. She spanked me right in front of my friends and I remember being so embarrassed that I never came out of the house for a whole week!

SKY: If you weren’t famous, what would you be up to right now? NEZ: I’d probably be trying to be famous. I’ve never wanted something so badly and I’ve never seen a different path for myself. I know in my heart that is exactly what I’m meant to be doing.

SKY: What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever said to you/done for you? NEZ: There was a time I was on the Copperbelt at a mall with a couple of friends. This fan ran so fast towards me and I didn’t see her coming. She jumped on me and we both fell to the ground. She was super excited she couldn’t let go and was almost crying. That was the probably the weirdest thing. I never expected it. SKY: What is one message you would give to your SKY Girl fans? NEZ: I must say, the SKY movement is something I’m attached to more now because I am a father of 3 girls; 2 of them are my nieces and 1 is my biological daughter. One thing I always try to tell them is no matter what you do, don’t ever get intimidated by what the next person is doing better than you. If they are willing to teach you, you’re better off working with them than competing with So there you have it! We hope this feature allowed you to get to know Nez a little bit more. We ‘stan’ a confident king who loves the SKY movement and we can’t wait to listen to more of his hits.

SKYCOVERGIRLS SKY Girls and besties Taonga Mbewe and Thabo Mutende won our Facebook competition to be on this issue’s cover with their hilarious Christmas card photo. They talked to SKY Mag about what they’d like to get for Christmas and what they’re looking forward to in the new year!

Taonga Sarah Mbewe (14) My Thing: Dancing singing listening to music

Not My Thing: Negativity fighting judgmental people

I am a grade eight pupil at Kabulonga Girls’ Secondary School. I would describe myself as friendly, fun and exciting. Considering that I am friendly, trust, honesty, love and compassion are values that I hold very dear in friendship. My friend Thabo and I go by these values in order to keep our friendship strong and healthy. I decided to take part in the cover competition because I thought it would be a chance for me to become a famous dancer alongside my friend Thabo, who wants to become a famous singer. Aside from being a famous dancer, I also want to become a doctor in future. Christmas to me is a special day to share love, gifts *iPhone 13 pro* cough cough lol as well as happiness. It is a time when family and friends gather together as one and express their love towards one another.

16

Thabo Mutende Nyirenda (13) My Thing: Singing acting dancing

Not My Thing: Smoking bullying fighting

I am a grade eight pupil at Munali Girls’ Secondary School. I believe I’m an intelligent, kind and loving person. I decided to take part in the cover competition because it was a chance for me to show my skills to the world and make my dream of becoming a famous singer come true. Apart from being a famous singer, I’d like to become a doctor in future. My fellow cover competition winner, Taonga, is a friend I who love and cherish. We value trust so much that it keeps our friendship as strong as ever. We both aspire to become doctors as well as famous media personalities and this has made us grow fonder of each other. The perfect Christmas to me is spending time with family and friends and sharing what I have with them. Speaking of sharing, if I could pick any Christmas gift, an iPhone 13 pro would be ideal. I mean, the latest iPhone is the in thing you know.

Seeing that the year is coming to an end, I am more driven to work hard to achieve my goal for 2022, which is passing my grade nine examinations. Other than that, the highlight of my year has been the SKY Fest. I got to meet many new sisters, played games and watched some famous artists I look up to ‘live.’ Now tell me a better experience, I’ll wait.

As the year is coming to an end, like Taonga, I look forward to passing my grade nine examinations next year, therefore I am pushed to work harder. 2022 will be centered around hard work. The highlight of my year has been the fact that I’ve realized who my true friends are. There is no greater joy than finding out who is actually down for you and is willing to be there in both good and bad times.

I like being part of the SKY community because I get to learn new things like fashion, cooking and other DIYs. I stay true to myself by working hard in school, not telling lies and being the innocent girl everyone knows. I urge you my SKY sisters to be true to yourselves, work hard and let the light in you shine. As the quote I live by says, “Leave a little sparkle wherever you go.”

I like being part of the SKY community because I get to interact with other girls and learn new ideas. I stay true to myself by believing in myself and reading positive quotes. I believe it is important to always believe in and stay true to yourself. You can achieve anything you set your mind to. As my favourite quote says, “Nothing is impossible with God!”

Happy Festivities!!

I wish y’all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

NO!

How do you say no? We asked on our socials how you say no. Here’s what you said: @Kawan’gu Kukenga

Not knowing what you stand for is a major reason for falling for negative peer pressure. This is when your ‘friends’ get you to do something that you don’t want to do. Previously, we talked about how knowing your VALUE makes it easy to say YES to yourself and NO to anything that you don’t stand for. Little children are so sure of what they want. They will scream or yell at the top of their voices when you try and get them do something that they don’t want to do. But growing up, the narrative changes. You question your values based on people’s opinions. You don’t yell ‘NO!’ or cry out like you would as toddlers. You go with the flow to fit in. You silence your inner voice, which has been guiding you since you were infants. When this happens, you have that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach telling you that you are not being true to yourself. The more you move away from your values, the stronger that feeling grows, and the smaller your inner voice gets, making it easier for you to be pressured into things you don’t want to do. You can reclaim your inner voice because the most important opinion about you, is your own. To do this, you must first know what you want (re-read the article Staying True to Myself). Then, practice a few ‘no statements’, so that you’re ready. Say if someone offers you a cigarette and you know you don’t want it. Simply say, ‘that’s not my thing’ or ‘I want to be your friend, but smoking isn’t part of the deal’ or ‘that’s not lakka’ or simply say ‘no thanks’. Your friends might try to reason with you; ‘come on, it’s not that bad’ and you might feel like if you don’t do what they’re doing, you won’t fit in and be accepted. But that fear is not usually grounded in reality. People accept their friends’ decisions when they say no thanks. There’s nothing cool about not being able to be yourself amongst friends. So, if someone ever does offer you a cigarette, shisha, or anything else that you have decided is not for you, simply say, ‘You’re killing my vibe, that’s not my thing!’ or whatever NO statement works for you.

20

I would say "no thanks I don't smoke". Remember to sound confident in your decision and strong so that they take you seriously and listen. In some cases it's important to remain polite and calm, but in others, like constant harassment you need to be direct and let them know that you don't smoke and inform them about the risks of smoking. If it's a close friend you can suggest to do other things apart from smoking. In this way you can make an excuse to leave the situation and they can decide if they want to go along with your idea.

@tem_wani_101

No, thank you, but it’s just not my thing.

@lil_muffin_50

We may say “No thanks” but there are other people that still force others to just try. So on my part, I would be calm and confident. Speak politely and clearly, and I would make sure I make eye contact with them. If I don’t look at them it’ll make them think I’m lying or just pretending.

@maryphiri79

Thanks for your offer but I don’t smoke. I would rather do something productive with you like watch a movie.

@elizabetharselybwembya

I really appreciate your offer, but I’ll have to pass, thank you so much.

@Christine Mbewe

I would tell them, her or him that smoking ain't my thing and I would tell them how smoking would harm them slowly. I personally would show them the 2nd SKY pledge and show them my thing and not my thing. I would tell them how offended I feel about their health and most importantly that it brings peer pressure to their life and that's when I could introduce SKY Girls to them.

@Preciouse Precie

No thank you so much but smoking is not my thing. I’m not cool with cigarettes because its not good for my health.

Our SKY Celebrity Big Sista’s also gave some words of wisdom:

Princes Natasha Chansa

I’m normally very honest, when something doesn’t sit right with me, I just point-blank decline. I use phrases like “Thank you for reaching out but I’ll have to respectfully decline.” Most times when my commitments clash, I’d say “I’m sorry but that won’t be possible because I have something I’m already committed to.” Sometimes I just say no. You don’t owe everyone an explanation.

Sophia Chapeshamano

The best way to say no in difficult situations is to be sure of yourself and your beliefs. Let go of the fear of disappointing people, they should be able to respect your boundaries. I would recommend the book Boundaries by Dr Henry Cloud.

We celebrated our first birthday and here are some of the highlights of the SKY Fest.

Did you miss the biggest event of the year? The first ever SKY Fest. It was all about music, fashion,

dance and good vibes only!

We had the biggest names in the game perform and they brought the heat with the SKY Girls such as DJ Milky Way, Nez Long, DJ Rhys, Chef 187, Princess Natasha Chansa and so many more! SKY girls came early and were so excited to see what we had in store for them. DJ MilkyWay opened the Fest with some catchy music that set the vibes SKY girls danced to. We had awesome dance performances by a Female girl group called Expressive Arts, who not only performed but also taught all SKY sisters some moves and even called them on stage to perform the dance moves they learnt which made them feel like a part of the show. Our own SKY Talent Zian, teen female rapper performed for the girls and she really brought the heat, energy and good vibes and all the girls enjoyed.

Here are some of the highlights of the SKY Fest

We had a fashion show by Grab Denim and the exciting part about it was that the models were actually picked at random from the crowd. The girls were confident and really spiced up the fashion show with their poses and sassy moves. Game time kept us on our feet with Mitchie Zambia’s Sweet Heart, Nalukwi, our SKY hosts and vibrant SKY girls from the crowd. It was so much fun watching them compete and engage in the games. And if that wasn’t enough, Wezi pulled up and sang the SKY Girls a special birthday song. Check out the pictures for this year’s round up… can’t wait to see what heat SKY Fest 2022 will bring - and make sure you don’t miss it!

Boujee Babes Thing: Living our best life!

Not a Boujee Babe Thing: Mediocrity

By Thoko Kalinda Many studies have been done to show the need of humans to define and explain what friendship is and what role it plays at different times. But what does friendship mean to you? What things do you expect from a friendship and what are you willing to offer? Let’s dive into it with real life besties, the Boujee Babes, who previously struggled from being present, communicating, finding understanding people without prejudice, to just making genuine friends who could be a support system. Meet Sinead, Fungayi, Yamfwa, Velepi, Suwilanji, Natasha and Thoko AKA The Boujee Babes! A group of real life bestfriends consisting of very different babes who would love to live in each other’s skins if they could. Boujee Babe #1 is Natasha, the Boujeest Babe ever! That one friend who is extra about everything? That’s Natasha. Trust her to go all out or do nothing at all. Sinead AKA Doc might be able to save lives in the hospital wards were she’s currently doing her shani practice, can’t dance to save her own life. Her calm personality finds her being the voice of reasoning in most situations. Velepi keeps everyone in check and shakes the ground whenever she speaks. She’s probably the most accommodating and is everyone’s go to for wisdom and comfort. Yamfwa is undoubtedly the life of the party! Never a dull moment with her around. But don’t let that fool you, she is Crypto Bae with a degree in Forensic Accounting. A beast on the track and and all round sweetheart, Suwilanji somehow juggles that and being the most present one. Trust her to wake up one day and plan a girls trip that no one can resist.

Fungayi is best described as a hug and feels like a hug. This babe loves babies and took it a step further by getting into medical school to be a paediatrician, and babies all the Boujee Babes too. Thoko is the boss babe/entrepreneur and a junkie for adventure who’s always ready to have fun. When asked what they appreciate most about being a Boujee Babe, Sinead had this to say, “I’m most appreciative of the fact that we push each other to be the best authentic versions of ourselves whether spiritually, education wise, friendship wise etc. We genuinely support each other and have each other’s backs.” You need to have dependable people in your corner who you can count on no matter what comes your way. Suwilanji is a track athlete and economics uni student, Suwi always appreciates the intentionality in the group which she describes as almost overwhelming. “Everyone is so deliberate about the space they hold in each persons life. I think another thing is the support in the group, from careers to personal development we are always there for each other - loving, learning and growing.” A friend has to be your first and biggest cheerleader, if not them then who? “How much we support each other. It’s not just for pics, smiles, and jokes. It’s not everyday vibes, when things start looking hard and tough to handle we’re all there for one another. We cry together, we party together and most of all we pray together and for one another as well. Our connection is based off of Christ as well.” Said Natasha.

Pay attention to how the person treats other people. That’s their character. If they’re always speaking bad about someone they’ll speak bad about you. If they’re rude to someone eventually they’ll be rude to you.

Be where you are loved unconditionally with people who will help you grow but also let you know when you're going astray.

24

Prioritise honesty, your friends should be able to tell the truth even when it hurts.

Look at how intentional they are. What are their motives for doing things? If their thoughts and beliefs don’t align with yours then they’re are not for you.

Have friends who share the same values as you and want to see you win in whatever you’re pursuing. Friends who will be honest with you and be accountable for their actions.

People who bring you peace above anything. People that have your best intentions at heart always.

DONNA MSHANGA

I’m the director and founder of Kamanga wear. It's a local Afro-centric chic clothing brand, and I'm a fashion designer by profession. I run a company that designs and produces ready to wear Chitenge clothes. When I was younger my mother would buy matching clothes for my sister, cousin and me. To say that I didn't like that would be an understatement. Therefore I tried, by all means, to make my clothes different from theirs. I would say I've always had a thing for extra flair. I've been designing for twelve to thirteen years, but Kamanga Wear has been in existence for eleven years. I attended my primary education at Mutendere Primary School where my mother was a teacher. I did my grade seven in Chitukuku, then did my secondary at Lusaka Girls. When I completed it, I went off to do a tailoring course with the Lusaka City Council for six months. When I finished my tailoring, I went for video production with TEVETA. From 2008 to 2009 I was at Evelyn Hon studying Fashion Design. For young girls that would love to pursue a career in the fashion industry, I would advise you to GO FOR IT! Especially if you're passionate about clothes. It may be tough, but if you are passionate you will have the strength to get through. Every day there are new challenges, new ideas, new creations, so it's a never-ending path of excitement if you put your heart into it. There were many challenges we faced when starting up since many people didn't regard

My Thing: Creativity, Arts & Crafts, DIY Not My Thing: Cigarettes, Alcohol, Following trends for the sake of fitting in

fashion design as a career. I was pretty much looked down on because I was only considered to be a tailor. People didn't understand that a tailor’s purpose is alterations, reduplication and amendments. However, fashion design involves creating ideas from scratch, and we play a vital role in trendsetting. Also, Zambia is not self-reliant in terms of manufacturing. It means we mostly rely on imported materials. The only thing that’s authentic about our fashion industry is that the designers are Zambian. Therefore the designs are local, which is a major challenge when competing at the international level. I didn't have many role models when starting. It's because I researched the most popular brands like Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana, etc. The conditions and system under which they succeeded didn't necessarily apply to our system. Things are slowly changing, but we have completely different systems compared to the other countries, so that was the reality I had to face. It gave birth to this brand that would come to represent Zambian fashion in a different light. When we started the brand, the aim was to create direct competition for South African-owned fashion companies in Zambia. Lastly, I would love to say congratulations to you all, SKY Girls! May you continue to engage, support and build confidence together. The journey hasn't been easy, but I salute you all for taking the first step and clocking your first year.

Hi SKY! I would consider myself as someone with a

fluid personality. When I'm with loud people, I'm loud too. On the contrary, when I'm with quiet people, I tend to be reserved as well. But people think I'm fake because of that. How do I make people understand that I simply reciprocate people's energies, and that's just how I am?

Hey SKY! I recently put on some weight. My family members

have been teasing me endlessly about it and never forego a chance to make a snarky comment about my weight gain. At first, I would brush it off as jesting, but now the comments get under my skin. What would be the best way to get it through that their jokes aren't funny anymore?

Hey Sisters!

I changed schools after writing my grade nine exams last year. At first, I would still hang out with my mates from my previous school, but as time went on, I found new friends at my new school. Now my old friends feel left out of my life. How do I balance between my old friends and new friends?

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that change

can be a difficult thing, and the fact that you have navigated a change and settled in your new school with new friends is something you should be proud of. We make connections at different stages in our lives, we change schools, move homes, move towns and when we grow up can change jobs several times. True friendships, however, don’t require you to see each other and talk to each other every day. Explain to your old friends that just because you’ve changed schools it doesn’t mean that you’ve left them behind, it’s just the circumstances that mean you can’t see each other as often as you used to. Arrange for times during holidays (or weekends if this is possible) where you can all catch up and hang around together.

26

Sometimes family members mistakenly think that by commenting about your weight gain, they are somehow encouraging you to lose weight. This is especially true in our society where comments like ‘nawu ina’ (‘you’re fat’ in bemba) are commonplace, particularly from elder members of the family. However, more often than not comments about weight gain will bring you down, especially if it’s something you’re struggling with. Speak candidly to your family members and let them know what you’re feeling and how the comments are affecting you. If the weight gain is in fact an issue for you, and it’s something you would like to change, take some steps towards healthier eating, increasing your water intake, and being more active. Perhaps this is something you could work on together as a family. It can provide a great bonding experience for the family. But if you are happy and confident with your weight, then let your family know you would appreciate it if they stopped mentioning your weight because you are actually happy and not planning to change.

Ola sistahs! I feel like I'm always compared to my sister. She's a straight-A student, athletic, class rep; she's got the voice of an angel. In short, she's an overachiever. Me, on the other hand, I'm as basic as it gets. As a result, I'm constantly in my sister's shadow. I love her to bits, but I hate being compared to her like she doesn't have her shortcomings. Help! How do I handle this? Comparison between siblings in families is very common, and something parents have been doing for generations. “Why can’t you be more like your sister (or brother)?” is a line that naturally rolls off parents’ tongues. Unfortunately, such comparisons can result in sibling rivalry, and fuel the comparisons. In your brief explanation you laud your sister, and give a more modest assessment of yourself, like you have bought into your parents’ story about the two of you. The truth is that we are all unique and all have something that no one else can do. Take time to find out what your unique gifts are and how you can express them more. You can do this through journaling, ask yourself questions like: What am I good at? What do I enjoy doing where the time goes past without even noticing? Share your interests with your parents and your sister. Talk to your parents about what they were interested in when they were younger and if there’s something that they were good at that they wished they had pursued.

It’s an instinct to want to blend into our

What’s up SKY! My close friend’s boyfriend was flirting with me while we were chilling with some friends of ours. When my friend came to hear about it, she was upset with me for keeping it from her. Her boyfriend told her it was nothing and was probably because of the few drinks he had. Now, whenever I give my opinion on the guy, I seem like I'm trying to sabotage their relationship. How do I get through to my girl when I've been villainized?

surroundings and fit in. The important thing as we grow up, is not to lose ourselves in wanting to fit in. If you know at your core who you are and what you stand for, the only opinion that should really matter is your own. Ask yourself why it’s important for you to have people view you a certain way. Eventually, if you’re being genuine, they will see for themselves that’s just how you are, and they’ll accept it. And if they don’t, just remember that what people think about you is none of your business. Stay true to you.

Navigating friendships can be tricky at the

best of times, throw a boy into the mix and it adds a whole new level of complexity. Your friend’s reactions are likely about how she feels and her lack of trust in her boyfriend after what he did, and she is projecting this on you. You have already shared your opinion about him, and she’s aware where you stand, so don’t volunteer any advice unless she asks for it. When you do give advice, let her know that you have her best interests at heart and whatever you do share is because you care about her.

Wagwan gorgeous! My friends never seem to understand that I’ve got strict parents. They don't always allow me to go out, and on the rare occasion that they do, they want to know everything. The parents of every person I'll be going out with, the time and place I'll be going. It also doesn't help that I've got an early curfew. I'm beginning to feel more and more left out and distant from everyone. How do I overcome this? You can tackle this on two fronts. First, encourage your parents to get to know your friends and their parents. Invite your friends over, let your parents see that they can trust them. In this way you get to hang around with your friends and they get to gain your parents’ trust as well. Your friends will also see you in your home setting and they may also get to see your parents’ position and understand where they are coming from. You could look for other ways to hang out with your friends that don’t necessarily involve going out to social scenes. Start a book club or some other common interest that your parents would not be resistant about. Do talk to your parents and give reasoned arguments on why you think you should be allowed out (‘everyone else is doing it’, is not a reasoned argument). It may take time and won’t happen overnight, but you can gradually gain your parents’ trust by providing evidence, for example on the times that you have been in a social setting with your friends, and you acted responsibly and got home by curfew time.

JOURNALING A GUIDE TO STRESS RELIEF by Lincia C. Mabo

SET REALISTIC AND ACHIEVABLE GOALS

Do you ever find yourself horrendously overwhelmed by everything going on around you? Does it sometimes feel like life is living you and not the other way round? Do you easily crack under pressure? If you’ve ever come close to feeling like this, we have just the article for you. At SKY we understand just how overbearing life can get, and in this self-help article, we bring you ways to handle stress, anxiety, and depression through journaling. Let’s jump right in!

Be honest with yourself. For beginners, it might be hard to get into a routine. Write whenever and whatever you feel like it. Give yourself daily tasks to improve your day to day habits. The best way to avoid depressive thoughts is to keep an occupied mind. Stay productive and healthy by giving yourself challenges like drinking 1ltr of water a day, putting your phone away half an hour before bed, etc.

ORGANISE YOUR THOUGHTS

MAKE THE GAME PLAN

Be intentional about valuing your mental health. Just the way you have designated time for eating, bathing and other necessities. Set aside time specifically for your journal. It can be the first thing in the morning, during your study time or right before you go to bed. Track your mood swings, triggers. Take note of how you react to certain situations and interactions. Maybe there is a particular friend whose comments get you triggered. You should keep count of your positive and negative triggers to gravitate towards the things that make you happy and avoid situations that drain you. Your journal doesn’t have to be gloomy. Try to find the silver lining of your day, and have an attitude of gratitude.

Journaling can be a way to find yourself through probing your inner emotions, making you more aware of your thoughts and feelings. We come in contact with different things that can affect our mood all the time. It could be a teacher whose lesson gives you anxiety, insecurities you desperately try to hide or a traumatic event from your childhood that still haunts you. Prioritizing your problems is the best way to start. Don’t suppress the feelings... face them.

THROW AWAY THE PLAN Don't literally throw away the plan, but prepare for things to go haywire. Some days will be worse than others, that doesn’t mean you should give up. We must all understand that in the grand scheme, certain events are beyond our control. So when the going gets tough, remember that diamonds form under pressure. You’re doing great! Keep going, and remember to be gentle with yourself.

MANAGING YOUR JOURNAL

First and foremost, there is so much you can do with it. Have fun! Explore with different colours and mediums. You might not always choose to write, you can also include sketches and graphics. You can start your entries with how you feel and why. What happened? How did you respond, and why? Then let your emotions run with it from there. Make sure to have a safe place to keep out unwanted persons snooping through your work. This will help you express yourself without censorship. Have a look at the template below for inspiration. I would suggest analysing your progress over a cycle of 14 days. Draw emoticons to convey your mood instead of traditional writing. Use symbols to track your progress. + for tasks you did. - for those you didn't. A circle to show something out of your control stopped you from completing your task. Reflect on each cycle in the failure notes and cycle review.

January 1-January 14 Mood check in

Academic goal: revise for 30 minutes a day

Health goal: drink 1ltr of water daily

Failure Notes Look back on why you failed to meet your set goals.

True Life Feature

Cycle Review How do you think you performed overall and what do you look forward to next cycle.

Christmas is a time to be happy, exchanging gifts and being grateful for one another. Although this wasn’t the case for me. My mother was killed by my father when I was very young. My father was then imprisoned on account of this. I was later taken to live with my uncle who abused me emotionally and psychologically. In view of all this, I ran away from my uncle’s home and was taken in by the social welfare. The social welfare agents took me to an orphanage which was more conducive for my well-being. Although conducive, this was not an ideal place for me to live because I did not experience love or get any privileges other than basic needs. Every night, I wondered to myself, don’t I have other family members who love me? Why have they abandoned me? Is there anything wrong with me? I always longed to spend my Christmas days with my biological family, receive new clothes, big hugs and have good food with them but they were nowhere to be seen. Coincidentally, my mother’s relatives had been looking for me for a very long time since I ran away. They only managed to locate me eight years later and by this time; I had grown and was already feeling awful about myself. I spent eight Christmases without them. My aunts, upon finding me, persuasively pushed for me to be released from the orphanage. The social welfare was rigid about letting me go considering the fact that no family member looked out for me in the past eight years. Seeing as Christmas was approaching, my family persisted and eventually I was taken in by one of my aunts who took very good care of me. On Christmas day that year, I received my new clothes and was ecstatic about finally getting to feel the love and affection I longed for.

STEP ONE:

DIY:

FINDING A BOX AND PLACING THE GIFT IN!

WRAPPING A CHRISTMAS GIFT Hey SKY Girls! Christmas is right around the corner and it’s definitely our favourite time of the year. Are you planning on gifting someone this Christmas? Have you already picked out the best gift for them but you are not sure how to wrap it? Or are wondering how you can make it look very pretty and unique? Don’t worry sis, we’ve got you.

Wrapping a gift in a box is way easier than directly throwing on the wrapping paper. If the gift you bought doesn’t come in a box already, you will have to find a box that you can place it in. Be careful when picking out a box, make sure it’s big enough to fit the gift and it can close tightly. Pro tip: you could use one of your old shoe boxes

STEP TWO:

MEASURE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WRAPPING PAPER Place the box right at the centre of the wrapping paper, making sure that all sides are equal, it’s good to have enough wrapping paper sticking out that you can just cut off later. After you are satisfied with the size of wrapping paper, making sure it goes all round, cut it neatly with the pair of scissors.

Gift wrapping can sound like a hectic task but we will lay down a few easy steps to guide you on how you can wrap a Christmas gift from home all by yourself! Before you start to wrap, think about the person you are gifting and what exactly they like.

STEP THREE:

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

FOLDING Now here comes the tricky part, you have to make sure that all the edges of the wrapping paper are folded in neatly to create a crisp edge. Start by securing the bottom of the gift by taping all the sides, then overlap the paper to cover the top and tape that down also. Next fold the ends of the paper by laying the gift on its side. Do this for each side. The wrapping should either end with you taping the last bit at the top or at the bottom. Making sure that the whole box is covered completely.

Scissors Wrapping paper Ribbon Tape or glue Coloured markers A box and the gift (of course!)

STEP FOUR:

ACCESSORIZING After you gift is neatly covered in wrapping paper, you want to give it some character, start by first tying your ribbon across the box on both ends, making sure its tight and tape it right in the middle on top, next, get your glue stick and glue on a Christmas bow right where the ribbons meet at the centre. Lastly, add in a holiday gift card by tying string through the little hole on the card and tying it around the bow. These are usually small and can sit right under your bow. You can write a special message on the card if you like.

32

And there you have it, easy steps to wrapping a Christmas gift. Now you can place it under the Christmas tree and wait for Christmas morning!

CHRISTMAS MOVIES FAVES By Lincia Mabo

Home Alone (1990)

Is the first film in the series and our top fav Christmas special of all time. Following eight-year-old Kevin who was left behind on their family vacation to Paris. This rib cracking comedy teaches us the importance of punctuality. It also teaches us that your family CAN forget you LOL!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2001)

Originally written by Dr Seuss before hitting the big screen. The Grinch is a popular Christmas special. Following a ‘Grinch’ on a mission to put an end to Christmas. The primary lesson of this comedy-drama classic is that: Your own misfortune is not reason enough to bring misfortune upon others. The Grinch brought havoc along with him simply because he didn’t have a family of his own.

The Polar Express (2004)

A touching film about the power of friendship. Features a group of children aboard a train called The Polar Express, which is headed for the North Pole. The children fac a series of obstacles but manage to stick together through it all. The film also sheds a light on the power of belief. Just as the little boy finally believed in Santa heard the bell. You’ll be shocked how the impossible can be made possible when you simply affirm it.

Shrek the Halls (2007)

Another favorite green grim monster crushing the festivities. However, Shrek genuinely makes an effort to make Christmas special for his family. But all that is short lived when the whole extended family shows up uninvited and things go downhill from there. We Christmas dinner can be a bit much. Dealing with relatives we can’t stand, zero privacy, etc. But Christmas is all about family and this movie encourages us to put aside our differences for a day to spread the true gift of Christmas…which is love.

Tyler Perry’s Madea Family Christmas (2013)

34

Madea definitely puts the M in christMas with this comedy packed drama. Our favorite Popo dodging grumpy grandma took Christmas to a whole new level. As unexpected as Christmas can get, leave it to Mable to find her way into the KKK meeting. The movies emphasize on putting love above our differences with a direct notation to racial inequality.

The Princess Switch (2018)

In this Festive Rom-Com identical doppelgangers Stacy DeNovo and Lady Margaret Delacourt switch lives. As entertaining as the plot was, the movie emphasizes the value of honesty. There is no secret under the sun and the truth is always bound to come out.

Holidate (2020)

Jackson and Sloane take us on an absolute roller coaster of emotions. What started out a little white lie takes a dramatic turn of events. Agreeing to be each other’s dates for the holidays. Sloan gets lost in her mother’s marriage-crazed opinions, despite everything working out in the end. It would have spared her a lot if she had just been forward about her feelings to begin with… But that wouldn’t make for a nice rom-com now, would it?

It’s totally for you, by you, so tell any fabulous teens you know to join the movement!

Let It Snow (2019)

It’s not Christmas without family, friends, drama, a little romance and some snow if you’re on the colder parts of the globe. This movie centered around a terrible snow storm tests the main characters and brings them closer to each other. The biggest lesson every Christmas movie ever teaches us is that everything works out in the end. It doesn’t all need to make sense in the heat of the moment. But it will, eventually.
