What is SKY?

SKY is a sisterhood of teenage girls all across Botswana that supports, empowers, and celebrates being true to ourselves. Becoming a SKY girl means taking the pledge to define your Sures (things you love) and Shapos (things you don’t need in your life).

What sets SKY girls apart ?

We are not swayed by peer pressure, instead, we make choices that are true to ourselves and we stick to them. Whatever our Sures and Shapos are, we stand by them, because those choices define us, and make each one of us unique. To become a SKY Girl you need to take the pledge and live by it.

2

SKY Issues 29.indd 2-3

SKY Pledge

I pledge to be true to myself and what I believe in. To be who I am, not who someone else thinks I should be. I will say Sure Ka Yone to the things that I am all about – like standing up for my friends and following my dreams. I will say Shapo Ka Yone to the things I am good without – like smoking and backstabbing. I will make choices that are true to me. I will follow my skyline. I pledge to find my SKY.

How do I take the pledge?

Rafiwa! Our big news is that SKY is creating a brand new sitcom called ‘Sure Ka Rafiwa’, all about a crazy family and an awesome teenage girl called Rafiwa! We held open auditions to find our amazing actors back in June, and right now we are shooting. Keep it locked to find out when it launches. We hope every SKY Girl will love seeing what Rafiwa gets up to every week!

Colourism Re shapo ka the toxic practice of discriminating against darker skin Queens! Luckily since #BLM last year, global brands like L’Oreal and Johnson & Johnson have agreed to stop selling skin-lightening products. But here in BW we still hear people talking about ‘yellowbones’ and we see too many women using filters to make themselves look “light”. Let’s remember that all SKY Girls are beautiful and unique, no one is better than any other.

Tie Dye We love the tie-dye look because whatever else we pair it with, we still look cute, creative and carefree. It’s usually associated with festivals and music concerts but guess what? It works just as well lounging around the house (which is lucky because basically every event since 2019 has been cancelled loool).

Being on the sidelines This means believing that great things are best done by other people and being too shy to stand tall. Don’t allow yourself to be closed up in a box or be pushed to the side. Use your voice, unashamedly! All SKY Girls have something to offer the world so make sure you don’t waste your potential, we need you!

True Friendship Having someone to go to for love and kindness, and being that someone for the people around you. Say yes to the good vibes, to the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood and cheering on others when they are winning. That’s why it’s this issue’s theme! We hope you enjoy reading about covergirls Katlego and Katlo, and ALL the other besties too. Co-ord Loungewear Another trend that has come out of the Covid pandemic is loungewear, or basically ‘stay at home’ clothes. Our favourite way to stay super comfortable while still looking like a baddie is by wearing co-ords (matching top and bottoms). This is hoodies, sweatpants, or basically anything comfy, cosy and MATCHING. Boity Thulo wears her co-ords here in ‘Barbie pink’ - another 2021 trend. 2 in 1, re sure ka yone. Billie Eilish Billie dropped her new album on 30th July and we have been toooo excited to hear it. We can’t believe it’s only her second album, we feel like she’s been around forever? It will surely define a whole era of music for us and we are busy learning all the lyrics and waiting patiently for more videos as we are loving her new aesthetic…

Covid This one is obviasss! It’s been over a year now since BW was first affected by Covid-19, and although the vaccine rollout is ongoing, we are still feeling the effects. All we want is to protect our elders and vulnerable people but unfortunately people are still becoming seriously ill and passing away. We hate to see it so let’s please work together to get through this, so we can enjoy our futures. Bandwagon’ing Blindly following friends, or ideologies of what you should be and being too scared to form opinions of your own. Say NO to any and everything that goes against your unique brand and don’t be afraid to rock alone. Friends don’t have to do the exact same things so don’t be afraid to be different, and shine like the sun! Skinny Jeans 3 years ago, the only type of trousers ko bo Mr Price would be skinny jeans… but these days we are seeing so many more options, from dungarees and boilersuits to mom jeans and flares. At SKY we love more options because that means more opportunities to express ourselves! So if wena o sure ka diskinny jeans that’s fine, but if you wanna mix it up then go for it. For an easy twist, try ripping holes in your old plain skinny jeans for a new on-trend look.

You can pair it with a white tee and jeans to keep the attention on the jacket! The bucket hat is a must on those chilly mornings with sunny days. (Model: Angie)

Do you ever ask yourself how people survived before lotion was introduced? Maybe they coped without it in summer but eseng ka winter bathong. Y’all, I simply cannot imagine how cold it’d be without lotion. The earliest evidence of the use of lotion-type salves can be traced as far back as 3000 B.C to the Ancient Sumerians and the Ancient Egyptians. Le raa gore before that mongwe le mongwe ne ale mosetlha? Ahh. I still cannot get over the fact that people used to go out with no lotion in winter; kana there were no outings also? No groove? Ao shems. Fast forward to today, everyone uses lotion. It’s kinda a necessity nowadays. Especially now that we are in winter, it’s very important to apply on lotion so you stay warm. Katlo

I have known Katlo for the longest time possible and she has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. Lolo, as I call her, is the upright and personal person that I know and has been since our kindergarten days. I love this about her because she has never tried to be a different person other than herself. At one point my parents even confronted me about being just like her as I was a very shy and reserved child. Although I was a shy person growing up Lolo taught me how to be confident and stand up for myself. As time went on and as of now, I am a confident person and I do things I never believed in myself to do. Katlo is my partner in crime, has been and always will be. We do things in a way that no one would even suspect us of anything. There was a time while we were doing standard 2 and we were writing our tests. Her and I would communicate using signals that only we knew during the test to help each other with difficult questions. I vividly remember that after our teacher gave us the tests we had both gotten 100%. She is also

good at keeping secrets as no one knew this about us until we wrote our PSLE of which we had written whilst doing standard 6 and both excelled!!! Katlo has never at any moment, day, month, or year turned her back or deserted me. Currently we go to different schools, she is home schooled and I attend a public school. Regardless of this she always makes an effort to stay in touch and check up on me both physically and through Whatsapp or Instagram. Sometime this year she even told me to visit her so that she could get me hot wings from Chicken Licken’ of which she kept to her promise and got them for me. While eating we even made some prank calls as her suggestion. This is one of the many things that I love about Katlo and what makes her my bestie. I love you bestie!!!!!

Katlo

Where do I even begin with Katlego. Fri*end*ships end but not family!! Katlego is more than just my friend, she is my sister, my ride or die, my partner in crime she is my everything. I’ve known her since pre-school so that is about 14 years together and there is not a day that Katlego makes me feel less important to her!! I love her. The best years of my life were when I was living in the same neighborhood as her. I’d go to school with her and since we lived in Rasesa we could create songs either out of our school lunch food or get a bunch of words that rhyme and put them together and make a rhythm. Katlego understands me, she gets my crazy side and I don’t have to pretend to be something I’m not in front of her cause she is loving, caring and accommodating. Sometime in primary some girls used to bully me and most of the people I thought were my friends turned against me except Katlego. I don’t think she understands how much she means to me but she is the coolest sister on earth. I have a feeling our bond was made in heaven. Her family takes care of me as if I’m their own and mine does the same too. We schooled with each other from preschool till primary but had to separate in high school and at some point, I thought she was going to stop talking to me or cut me off (that’s something I have never told her) but she never did that. She continued being my sister, she continued checking up on me. After losing my siblings she made sure to stand by me always and I appreciate everything she has done for me. Katlego tswelela o atlege mo botshelong jwa gago! I love my princess and she’d never be replaced cause she is my sister! Our bond can never be broken!!

eet your cover competition guest judges and YouTubers, Naomi Knott and Balepi Mosweu. For this issue of SKY Magazine, we handed over judging responsibilities for the cover competition to 2 young women who are friends and have 15,000 YouTube subscribers between them. Out of the hundreds of entries we received, Naomi and Balepi reviewed the final 10 on their YouTube channels and ultimately chose this issue’s covergirls – Katlo and Katlego! SKY: When you were judging the competition, what were you looking for in a winning entry? Balepi: I was honestly just looking at how the two besties spoke about each other. In my opinion, you can tell how close two people are through the way they adore one another and just the way they sing each other's praises. It’s easy to say nice things about someone you’re close to but I was looking for an entry that made me smile and imagine how the two girls are when they are together, and the two we picked did just that. SKY: Awesome! So you chose Katlego and Katlo as the winners, what was it about their entry that stood out for you? Balepi: One of them mentioned that “fri*end*ships end but family never does" and I MELTED. I felt that in my entire chest lmao. Katlego and Katlo spoke so well about each other and their friendship dates all the way back to when they were in primary school together and they’re still as close even though they’re in separate high schools. That really touched me because I had best friends miles away from me that I kept close to me through the distance. Naomi: I related more with their story seeing as I also had to part ways with my best friend in university but we never lost contact with each other. I think that really shows how distance shouldn’t be the reason friendships or any relationships fall apart.

be the 19th issue, it was so powerful. A couple of my faves are on there and the ladies on there are extremely talented in their own respects and it was giving everything! Naomi: Personally Issue 25 does it for me! The “not all heroes wear capes” is pretty much my mantra. Someone doing even the slightest thing could save a person’s day or make it better. SKY: And your least favourite and why? Naomi & Balepi: why do you guys hate me? my least favorite has to be issue number 23. Please please it’s not that deep, I just believe the others were a bit more creative. SKY: You guys are also friends, please tell us what you like about each other Naomi: Baleeeps! Choymi yaka! It’s the fact that we’re both so genuine and kind to everyone around us. She’s got the biggest heart with so much room to give and show love to people. Such a sweetheart in my opinion. She’s such a joy to have around and honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way. Balepi: I love Miss Naomi because she is such a fun and reliable person. We haven’t been friends for a long time but she is someone I feel comfortable and safe to open up to without any judgement and that’s super rare to find these days, not to mention that she is GORGEOUS inside and outside. We have so much in common which makes our conversations flow with ease. I wouldn’t trade her for anything in this world, I love you my choymie! SKY: You’re both YouTubers, what’s your number 1 tip/advice to girls out there interested in content creation or becoming YouTubers? Naomi: Patience is a virtue. Don’t start your channel thinking you’re going to get subscribers and make money instantly. Your brand has to be built from the bottom up and that takes time. So be patient about it. Balepi: Just do it. Don’t think about “what will people say", literally just do it. There is a target market out there for everyone and what you put out might not appeal to many people but you will never know until you try. It’s a fun space where you can express yourself and also meet so many amazing people.

SKY: You guys also rated previous SKY Magazine covers on your YouTube channels, which one was your favourite and why? Balepi: It was honestly so amazing going through all the issues from the first one because GROWTH hunnay! My favorite definitely has to

Celebrity Best Friends

Uua Murangi and Fifi Mathambo These two are both content creators, movers and shakers, all round pretty girls #PrettygirlsWorldWide, so duhh! Of course they are best friends. Fifi says when she first met Uua at an event, they couldn’t stop complimenting each other. Uua recently let Fifi do a takeover on her Instagram, to post and interact with Uua’s followers, and Uua dressed up as Fifi for her #StealingCelebStyles edition on Insta, which was super cute. Can you say friendship goals? #Twinning

We all love a great “how you did guys meet story” and the best ones are when strangers become friends and they become inseparable best friends! A sisterhood is a bond formed over laughter, love and life experiences (we are all about that at SKY), and these sets of friends sure share a lot of love and support for each other!

Pearl Thusi and Dj Zinhle These two are a magnum of sisterly support and love. They said that it’s rare to find women in the creative industry supporting and cheering for each other, but they clicked the first time they met and have since shared a bond over motherhood, careers and helped each other through tough times in their lives. They come out slaying, do sleep over play dates with their children, and if that is not what true friendship is, then what is? #FriendshipGoals

Yara Shahidi and Zendaya Any black girl magic list has to have these two Hollywood best friends. They have a sisterhood bound by intelligence, talent and beauty. No doubt this pair is a besties match made in heaven. When they are not fighting for black representation in entertainment, they are in movies and winning awards or just being the coolest Gen Zs on the internet. Being black and blessed is where it's at, and we love to see it. #BestiesForLife

Miss Gee Kays and Resego Motlhokatlhari Society places so much emphasis on romantic relationships, but platonic friendship is just as important and these two are the ultimate friendship goals. They share similar passions; both radio personalities, MCs, and fashion lovers. Miss Gee Kays calls Resego her “ride or die” and in an interview, Resego said that their friendship is “nice and healthy”. Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift They have been besties since 2008; that is over 10 years of sisterhood. Selena says she goes to Taylor for all her love advice. They both dated Jonas Brothers at the same time, and stayed friends after the break-ups. The besties perform on music tours together and appear in each other’s music videos. They keep most of their private lives lowkey but they are never shy to show each other some love on their socials. Friends that work together, slay together! Now, that’s #BFFGoals

OF THE BESTIES Grab your best friends and answer these questions togeda! The Mix season 2 is out on our YouTube channel and Facebook page. We featured a game show where 4 pairs of best friends battled it out! Check out this interview we did with the winners Bokang with Kao, and Abotle with Omaatla.

Kao & Bokang SKY: How did you meet? In 2010 doing grade 1 together at Mophane Primary School. We became best friends in grade 3 though (2012).

SKY: What brings you 2 together? Kao: Honestly, we understand each other. The way we react to certain situations. We set friendship goals and aims which we try to achieve. We are each others pillars of strength. Bokang: We are practically sisters, we do almost everything together. I also love the fact that we always make decisions together when it comes to anything.

SKY: What quote inspires you? Kao: “You can't go back and change the past, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” Bokang: “Whatever you do, give it a 100%.” Maybe that explains why I’m such a perfectionist lmaaooo!

SKY: What are you listening to right now?

SKY: What do you have in common? Bokang: We just wanna have fun, we are here for a good time not a long time!!! LIVE LIFE LIKE EVERYDAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY!

SKY: What do you mostly disagree on? Kao: I'm always doing the talking which I feel is unfair. Typical example is whenever we are out like for lunch, I'm the one to call the waiter if she needs something, I'm the

make us stronger because we notice how much we need each other and vent on our way forward, what we need to do to improve our friendship.

SKY: What do you love about each other?

Bokang: Gorilla glue has our relationship forever strong and sealed baaabbyyy!!!

Kao: We are a killer combo; we have been on our roller-coaster ride but we are still riding together. We keep on getting stronger even if we dont notice that and we are inseparable. The fact that we live in the moment, we cherish every little thing we have and we have the most fun. We try to understand each others growth because the people we were in 2012 aren't the people we are now. I'm also in love with the fact that we plan our future together. THAT’S MY RIDE OR DIE 4LIFERSS! Bokang: I love how she always knows what to say at the right time, it’s like she can read my mind and it’s soo crazy sometimes. I won’t forget how she’s always there for me and always looking out for me. A KEEPER!!!!

Kao: Break us? We don't do that here. I feel we've been in situations where we could've stopped being besties but that’s my soul mate, we are still rocking. Bokang: Who? Us? Breakup? That sounds impossible we’ve been through soo much for us to be “breaking up.” If she wants to do that she can just take a walk outside, clear her mind, come back and continue being my best friend.

SKY: What makes your friendship strong? Kao: Food baby, outings, making memories without even noticing it. Our fallouts also

SKY: Do you share secrets? Would you tell anyone if it was to save your best friend’s life? Kao: We do share secrets I mean that’s a no brainer. Anything for my queen she'll have to understand I was held at ransom. Bokang: We do tell each other EVERYTHING and keep it locked but if situations were tough like that I would spill the tea, she’ll understand.

SKY: What are your personalities like? Kao: I'm the bubbly, active and talkative friend like I said chileee I'm the life of the partyyyy! She is very troublesome and sneaky damn she can get away with anything. We are both funny and smart, we bring on our A game.

SKY: Do you share clothes? What’s your favorite item in your friend’s closet? Kao: We don't wear the same size because I'm a stallion but Ms me there keeps on stealing my clothes. We do share accessories like necklaces and shades if that counts. I loveee her pageantry gowns and outfits damnnnnn

Kao: She is can be soo moody at times but I still love her because I know she has a soft spot for me Bokang: She can be soo petty sometimes, like ma’am? Grow up pls.

SKY: What would you like to apologize to your friend for that she doesn’t know about but you wanna say sorry right now? Kao: I can’t expose myself like that yohhhh but I want to believe I've come clean with everything I wanted to tell her sooo I don't have to say sorry. Bokang: Well that means she’s going to have to find out and that’s not the whole point, right?

SKY: What do you love most about your bestie? Kao: She has a very huge impact in the person I am today, she makes me feel like I'm a powerful lady (which I am but we all feel weak sometimes hey). She is one powerful goddess and I thank the Lord for her presence in my life. Bokang: Having a friend like me doesn’t need you to be judgemental hey? I’m quite grateful that not even once has she ever done that lol. Ooouuu can’t forget her top tier personality too, everybody needs a sprinkle of Kao and you can’t argue with me on that one.

Bokang: I still have her pyjamas and I’m not even planning on returning them. I’m going for her graphic tees next!

SKY: When and how did you meet? We met in 2017 in high school. We’ve been in the same class since Form 1. That’s pretty crazy actually.

SKY: What brings you 2 together?

Abotle & Omaatla

Our shared love for trying new experiences together. When we met we were both pretty anti-social and never really ventured out but now we go out, meet new people and try new stuff together.

SKY: What quote inspires you? Abotle: “When you hit rock bottom, the only way left is up”-Anonymous. It reminds me that even when I’m going through the darkest times and I feel like I’m down in the dumps, the only thing left to do is pick myself, do my best, keep trying and succeed. Truth be told I heard this line from a Disney movie when I was a kid and it’s stuck with me ever since. Omaatla: "It goes through the worst and best weather, harsh winds all but it still manages to stand tall" I came up with it actually lol. It was inspired by a sunflower and its resilience to always grow towards the sun regardless of all that may be happening. I resonate with this quote because like the sunflower, I'm optimistic even when things seem unbearable and impossible.

SKY: Do you share secrets? Would you tell anyone if it was to save your best friend’s life?

SKY: What are your personalities? Abotle: I think the talkative one would definitely be me. I’m quiet at first when you meet me but once we get close I never keep quiet. Omaatla is bubbly and funny-- her humor is subtle and I think unintentional. Everyone describes her as a ray of sunshine and a rainbow. We’re also such couch potatoes! That’s our favorite activity when we hang out! Popcorn and Netflix on the couch.

SKY: What flaw does your friend have but you still love her for it? Abotle: She has a tendency of being pretty distant when she’s going through something but I do understand that sometimes people need peace to work through their problems so I still love her nonetheless.

SKY: What would you like to apologize to your friend for that she doesn’t know about but you wanna say sorry right now? Nothing, because we're open and talk out everything.

SKY: What do you love most about your bestie? Abotle: I love that she never takes anything too seriously so it helps me not take myself too seriously either and helps me be a whole lot less sad. Omaatla: I love her sense of adventure and direction. As well her social skills sbwl being that social.

I'm not going through a heartbreak but shoot, sis got me all up in my feels. I be listening to "Enough for you" and "Good 4 u" on repeat!

SKY: What do you have in common? We both like shopping, going out, exploring and experiencing new things together.

SKY: What do you mostly disagree on? Omaatla: Which guys we find cute lol. Abotle needs new glasses because Caleb McLaughlin and Polo G are everything hunny. Abotle: In my opinion, Omaatla is the one who needs glasses because there is no way the guys she finds attractive are anywhere near that!

SKY: What do you love about each other? Abotle: I love Omaatla’s open mindedness to understanding different perspectives on issues and her strong will to stay true to her

Having a friend or a group of besties that are loyal, supportive, honest, kind to one another and to other girls is important. This helps us build and keep healthy & happy relationships. Not only should the Girl Code apply to your circle, but we gotta extend it to other girls around us, at school, in the streets, and online too. As girls, we should build one another and not bring each other down. Being a part of a sistahood like SKY has showed us that girls indeed love and support each other and we’re very proud of every SKY Girl out there! Girl code may vary from friendship to friendship. Here are some universal Girl Code points to note!

SECRETS

RUMOURS

Be careful not to share any of what your friends tell you with other people. Even if you have a misunderstanding or you break up, do not spill your friend/ex-friend’s secrets. It’s not nice and it will follow you forever. Imagine they tell everyone else the things you shared with them!

If you hear rumours about someone, don’t just believe them. Give your friend/s benefit of doubt and tell the person spreading those rumours to stop. Let them know gore it’s not nice spreading rumors about others even if they might be true. This usually happens with slut shaming which is not OK. Passing judgement like that about other girls helps nobody. Respect other girls and their choices and mind your own business.

SOCIAL MEDIA We all have our insecurities, and social media has been a space where we try to express ourselves and share our lives with the world. When you see a girl post something, drop a like and boost her confidence. Show her some of that online love, it goes a long way. Re Sure Ka girls supporting girls!

PADS/TAMPONS If you have an extra pad, an extra tampon, and a sister needs you to help them out, please share. We know how that panic feels. You can also always carry an extra pad in your bags for these moments ladies, that girl will never forget how much you saved them that day.

STAND UP FOR OTHER GIRLS If you see a girl (whether she’s your friend or not) getting bullied, harassed, mocked, intoxicated – say something, do something. Give her some water. Help her out. You can also ask for help. Tell someone to make sure it stops. Tell those people off. If it’s online, report their accounts to FB/IG/TikTok/Twitter. And let that girl know you got her back.

SKY Issues 29.indd 20-21

Is it important to have a BEST friend?

YES

“It is sooo important to have a best friend because it’s someone you confide in. It’s someone you can trust and always rely on, someone you can count on to help with certain issues and someone you can talk to when you’re feeling down. Kore someone who will make you happy.”

NO

“Not really because friends may come and go. We all change as we get older and sometimes you might not have things in common with that best friend any more, like your interests might change or you might move schools and not spend time together. That’s why it’s advisable to have a wider circle of friends so that you don’t risk losing that one friend and being left with no one.”

Is it acceptable to date a friend’s ex?

YES

for her and really isn’t good for her at all. Then it’s like your duty to tell your girl that he is not making her happy, you know sometimes they can’t see it themselves? Otherwise just stay out of it, it’s not really your place to say something and you might get accused of interfering.” So obviously people have different rules! Remember to check up on other people’s opinions before acting. So if you wanna tell a friend that you don’t like her boyfriend, try to get her opinion first on if that’s something she finds acceptable. If it is, then go right ahead. If she says she believes people should keep their thoughts to themselves, then do just that girl and avoid accidentally offending your friend. Also, make sure you communicate your opinions clearly – think about your own code (is it fine for someone to date your ex?) and let your friends know so that you don’t experience some nasty surprises along the way :) And when in doubt, remember to stick to the ultimate girl code – we could even call it human code because it’s not limited to girls. “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. If you live like this, you can’t go wrong.

“If I am in a relationship and say you are my friend for example, I want you to respect that I'm in a relationship at that time, but if at all we breakup because we see gore it won't work between us, I wouldn't mind you dating my ex because it would be me crying over spilt milk.” “Lmao tbh it's only acceptable if me and the friend sat down and talked about it uno? Make sure gore she has no feelings left for the gent or whatever. Communicate bekhose if not you might make your tsala jealous and ruin your friendship. Even tho irris what irris you get?”

NO

“Ahh no waysss. Never. It’s just one of those things that is unacceptable for girls so don’t do it.” “No I feel like tabo ele go betrayer your friend fela you understand gape eta nna nkarr you've been waiting for him and all wa bona so why date them if you know what happened between them?”

Should a friend tell a friend that no one likes the guy she’s dating?

YES

Note, communication is important in every relationship, even with your girlfriends. Some girl codes might be universal to spread healthy female friendships, but others can be agreed between you and your friends. Know that once you break girl code between your friends it can damage the relationship and be difficult to build back up. However, it’s important to listen to each other, understand one another, and find ways to move forward if you believe trust can be re-built.

20

Some parts of the Girl Code are set in stone, while others are more personal depending on what your values are as a person. It’s important that friends know each other’s values, so that you don’t accidentally do that something that would offend the other one. We asked some SKY Girls for their opinion on a few juicy issues – what’s YOUR opinion?

Are They a Good Friend?

When you’re around them, are you free to be yourself (craziness and all)? I am the best version of myself when I am around them (3 points) I can be myself but here and there I feel uncomfortable (2 points) Sometimes I have to change/justify my behaviour when I’m with them. They may not fully know the real me (1 point) Have they ever said or done anything that really embarrassed you, in front of people? I remember more than one time when they said things about me that were hurtful or embarrassing in front of people (1 point) Never. They always have my back and would stand up for me if anyone said anything negative (3 points) It had to be a mistake (like if they were joking around or laughing at me), but they definitely wouldn’t do it on purpose (2 points) How does this friend treat you when other people are there? Maybe less attention than how it is when we are alone (2 points) The exact same as when we’re alone together (3 points) I am sometimes ignored when there are other people around (1 point) Has this friend ever pressured you into doing something you didn’t want to do? Yes, but they understood when I refused (2 points) They respect my boundaries and would never pressure me (3 points) Yes, I didn’t want to say no and I was kind of uncomfortable… (1 point) If their grades were kinda bad and you got first place in class, they would… Be jealous and annoyed…like you were both competing… (1 point) Congratulate you but be grumpy about their own results (2 points) Openly celebrate your success and be super proud of you! True True LifeLife Stories Stories Dear Anonymous, I want you to know that I feel so ashamed for what I did and I am writing this letter to you hoping you will read it, and give me a chance to apologize to you face to face. You were right, I don’t deserve your friendship. You told me about your sexual abuse at home and I shared that personal information with someone else who then spread it around school. I should have never even told our ‘friend’ your story; I betrayed your trust and what I did is unforgiveable and awful. We were just talking and without realizing, I turned a secret you trusted me with into a gossip story. It was a moment of weakness and I realize now that I shared something that I shouldn’t have shared, and I caused you so much pain. I wish so bad that I could take it back. It broke my heart to hear boys at school shaming you for what happened to you, and I knew then that I made the biggest mistake of my life. I hate what I did. It was a stupid thing to do and I lost the only friend who has always had my back. The whole school was talking about it, and I pretended that I did not know anything about where the rumour started. I was ashamed; I should have taken responsibility and stood up for you but I just let everyone talk about you and did nothing. When in fact I was the only person you have told the story to, you trusted me to tell me and only me, because I was supposed to be your best friend. I understand that you have no reason to trust me after being such a horrible friend to you but I need you to know that I am so sorry. So so so sorry. This might not mean much to you and I do not have the right to even say this but I value our friendship and I need you in my life. You are the only real friend I have and you have always been an amazing friend to me. I can’t take back what I did, God knows I wish I could, but I’m willing to work every day to earn your trust again and vow to be a better friend to you. Please forgive me. I am truly sorry my friend. I hope you read this and know that you are a better person than I am, you never deserved any of this, and I love you. Your best friend,

Thato Jessica

Letter to my 14 Year Old Self

Thato Jessica is an award winning singer/songwriter and an all-round creative. She is a ball of energy and very passionate about everything she does. Thato aspires to make music that touches people, to make a difference in people’s lives and be the best version of herself.

Hello Thato :)

This letter is from someone who really cares about you. For this little moment while you’re reading this, I want you to imagine you are sitting on a cloud in the sky. Imagine the warmth of the sun on your beautiful skin, you’re cosy and comfortable. Firstly, you are loved and you are worthy of love, remember this always. It’s not about what you can achieve or what you have, you don’t have to earn anyone’s love and although sometimes it feels like getting good grades or fitting in can get you this love, this is just momentary praise from people. You are worthy of love because you are kind, smart and brave. You are caring and you always do your best. Please don’t let anyone tell you different, believe that you are enough for the things you want because you deserve to be happy. It’s hard being 14, you wonder if you’re pretty enough and if your crush likes you back and that’s pretty normal. You don’t have to change yourself to be liked by people, you are perfect just the way you are. Give yourself time to grow into your body and enjoy wearing cute clothes that you like and have fun with your style. I know you worry a lot about mum and wonder if she will be okay, you don’t like the way dad is treating her and you want to help her. That is coming from a good place, you love her. Sometimes you feel helpless and feel like there’s no one to talk to. I want you to know that things will work out. Your parents love you very much but their problems are not yours to fix. You are not alone, find someone older you’re comfortable with to talk to, like your great aunt. People are in your life for a reason. When we go through tough times we shouldn’t be afraid to reach out, you’ll be shocked at how much someone else understands what you’re going through. When people treat you in a mean way, just know that it has nothing to do with you, sometimes it’s because they have their own problems and insecurities and don’t know how to properly express them. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. Standing up for yourself does not mean doing what the bully is doing to you. It means first telling that person what they’re doing is hurtful, then if they continue to do it talking to someone who can help you deal with it better. Don’t be afraid to move away from friends and people who are terrible to you. The best thing you can do is be loving. The city loves SuperFro. She’s so popular they want to take selfies with her for their social media posts. So they ping her app for every small problem they have!

…In the last edition of Yaya the Powerful, Yaya was faced with a difficult decision. To save her father from an accident at work, to save kids from a bomb explosion in the school bus, or to try save both but risk saving neither. SKY Girls on social media voted for Yaya to try save both. Let’s find out what happened…

Your emergency is you want me to help change your wheel?

After the incident…

That young lady saved my life. Whoever she is, I’m very thankful to her. She also saved those kids!

Wow! You just saved the day! our city is very thankful. What was going on in your mind while running out of time?

I just knew I could do it if I believed in myself with no doubts. I had to try my best.

The next day...

Yebo SuperFro. Gatwe o super wena!! Can we take a selfie first?

Check this out, I created an app to make it easy for people to reach SuperFro!

But what should I do?!!

I’ve spent the whole day helping people with fake emergencies kante they just wanna take pictures with Superfro. Not anymore!

Mmhh… I wonder who she is! This is fire Zee. Re ka treka Leopard girl who put my dad in danger? What’s this red alarm beeping?

Waddup!

Whoa! Someone pinged SuperFro! There’s a robbery ko Shopmore

On my way

Yaya! Emergency! The app shows gore Koloi e stakile mo sporong with a family inside. The train is on the way

Yaya, we sensed your distress! Mathata ke eng?!

yaya is stuck, should she... A: believe her friend and go save the family?

b: assume it’s another fake emergency and not respond?

at the store...

What’s going on here? I’m so sorry, seems like fake news. Ha gona mathata kwano today!

I didn’t think you’d come. OMG can I take a selfie?

Yaya please pick up I say trust your instincts. Fake news di ka go lapisa bestie!

I say you should believe your friend. You won’t forgive yourself if it’s not fake news

Now YOU choose what happens! Should Yaya believe her friend that there’s an emergency and go save the family on the train tracks, or should she take a break from all the fake emergencies and sit at home watching TV? 28

B You are the ever-loving friend who needs the support and attention of your friends to function. When they are not available to you when you need them, you feel sad and unloved. This means you can be seen as clingy or over-dependent. It’s great to be so caring, but remember to find your own hobbies and learn how to spend time alone and enjoy your own company too! That kind of freedom is important in character development and also strengthens relationships rather than burdening them.

30

SKY Issues 29.indd 30-31

A B C

You are clingy You expect your friends to always be in a good mood Are not always around when your friends need you

You are cool with everyone, and you are the peacekeeper within your crew. You want everyone to get along and you are always there for everyone, at any time; which sometimes inconveniences you and takes up much of your time. You avoid conflict so you always do what they want to do. Those are great traits, but it is important to have boundaries and learn how to teach your friends to get along without your intervention. It’s amazing to be the someone that everyone can depend on but when do you get the chance to do the things you love and who saves the hero? Remember to strive for a balance in your life :)

Step 1: How to form a study group

Step 3: How to deal with slackers

If your teacher has not assigned you a group for a particular assignment or project, but you want to work on that subject with other people to improve your grades, find a couple of people interested and form the group yourselves. First, find people that are interested, people you know you can work well with. If you don’t know someone but you feel like they are smart and would be a great contribution to the group, invite them, they might fit right in. Remember the goal here is to share study materials, help each other out to maintain good grades. Other things to consider:

Some people can take advantage of a free good grade when working with groups. They slack and have you carry all the burden. Some people work best alone and can’t function well in groups. However, we can’t escape group work. So, when you find slackers in your group

Set rules together - nominate a leader to take charge Set a study timetable - where, when, and what you’re studying together Set goals - for the group and for each individual Set expectations - before every session, do your own research

Ask them privately what methods work best for them to be in the group Set strict rules in front of everyone and have everyone agree on them If the situation doesn’t change, ask a teacher to intervene and find a way forward Give each other a chance and cooperate with one another to succeed

C You live your own life and you have things to do. You love your friends but you also enjoy time to yourself. You don’t share much because you don’t want to burden your friends with your problems so you always find a way to turn every situation into a fun, and easy vibe. It’s OK to live your life, nurture other friendships or connections. However remember not to neglect the friendships you already have, and you can always go to your friends for advice or if you just need a shoulder to cry on. That’s what friendships are for.

DID YOU KNOW? Astronauts get taller in space due to the lack of gravity

Step 2: How to keep each other motivated Studying all the time can drain you so it’s good to practice healthy study habits and come up with ways to keep each other motivated. Believe in each other and support one another throughout. The best ways to keep each other motivated are Bring snacks to study - popcorn, fruits, candy, and lots of water! Break down the content - to make it easier to understand Stay in touch and share materials all the time - via WhatsApp or FB groups Recognize and applaud milestones - treat yourselves after reaching goals

IN SUMMARY How to run a study group: 1. Recruit members, set goals, rules & expectations 2. Set up communications channels and stay motivated! 3. Address issues like ‘slackers’ to keep the group going

When it comes to desserts, is there anything more impressive and tempting than a beautifully frosted cake made just for you? It’s so nice to receive a personalised cake, so here are some tips on decorating a cake for your bestie’s birthday. My favourite part is having fun with designs and colours that bring life to my cakes :)

Check out all the places SKY was spotted recently. Don’t forget to send us your photos of you with anything SKY – you could win some amazing merch!

You will need:

• Cake of your choice • Frosting (mix icing sugar with butter and food colouring of your choice) • Rotating turntable (optional): makes icing easier as you don’t have to walk around the cake while decorating • Bread knife: for leveling and splitting cake layers • Piping bag with tip: for icing your cake in whatever design desired, you can also use a Ziploc with the corner snipped off. • Cake smoother/scraper: for smoothing icing and making decorative markings and patterns. • Palette knife: for applying frosting without dragging your fingers through the cake.

Steps:

Chill Your Cake

Since decorating a cake is a lot of work it’s best to do your job in stages. For example, bake it on a Monday and let it chill, then take it out for decoration on a Tuesday. Chilled cakes don’t crumble as much when frosting them and that makes it easier.

Leveling and Stacking Your Cake

Stacked cakes are best, so if you have time make at least 2 or 3 separate cakes to stack with frosting in between. Leveling your cakes is important as the top of the layers must be completely flat, if not then the cake will wobble as you stack them up. Use a bread knife and shave off the top, then flip your cakes so that the bottoms face upward to be sure of an even flatter top.

Applying Crumb Coat

The next step is to frost the cake, which starts with applying a crumb coat. A crumb coat is an initial, light coat of frosting that seals and suspends any crumbs, so that when you go to apply the final coat, you won't see any crumbs in the frosting. If you are making a cake layer, position the bottom layer on your turntable, spread a layer of frosting over the bottom layer, then place the next layer on top (bottom side up). Finally apply the crumb coat to the whole cake, then chill the cake for 15 to 30 minutes. This allows the crumb coat to fully set before you apply the final coat of frosting.

32

SKY Issues 29.indd 32-33

4

Frosting Your Cake

Place the assembled layers on the turntable and apply a mound of frosting to the top, spreading it around with your palette knife while you rotate the cake. Do the sides next. It's best to work quickly so that everything stays cool. But when you're still learning, this may not be possible. So, it might help to take a break between doing the top and the sides, and return the cake to the fridge in the meantime. If you have a cake smoother (or cake scraper), use it now - run the edge along the sides of the cake while rotating it.

5

Piping

Now make a different colour frosting and use the piping bag to decorate. Making decorative flowers and other shapes using a piping bag with various tips is something that takes practice. Piping the cake is all about being creative and being able to create whatever pattern you feel is cute and goes along with the theme of the cake décor. From classic cupcake swirls to piping buttercream flowers and borders, you can be as creative as you want. As a beginner, start simple to get the technique, then practice more using different designs and colours. Piping a star is probably the easiest for beginners. The tip does the work for you… simply squeeze and pull away. You can learn to pipe shells, zigzags, dots and rosettes that make lovely floral accents.

6

Optional Toppings

People love getting personalised cakes so whatever your best friend loves, consider putting that on the cake. I like to add Oreos, Ferrero Rochers, M&Ms etc. You can also look for decorations in shops things like candles, cocktail umbrellas in your friend’s favourite colour, or flowers (fresh, dried or artificial all work great). You can even print out photos of your friend and stick them on!
