All Saints Church is designated as a cathedral this year, signalling that Derby is now ready to adopt official city status.

The Derby Royal Infirmary is officially opened. Instrumental in the design is Florence Nightingale - a legacy that has contributed to the site’s current name.

Toyota Manufacturing UK is established with a plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire, currently employing over 3,800 people and producing Toyota lines including Avensis, Corolla and Auris.

1977 Derby is awarded city status by Queen Elizabeth II to mark her 25th ascension anniversary, previously Derby was one of few UK towns with a cathedral.

Pride Park Stadium opens as the home of Derby County Football Club, a 34,000 capacity ground that also hosts arena music concerts.

The completion of Derby Arena, a multi-purpose entertainment venue and velodrome that hosts music concerts, comedy shows and a variety of sporting events including cycling.

2001 Derwent Valley Mills - home of Derby Industrial Museum (housed in the original Silk Mill) - is designated a World Heritage Site. The museum highlights Derby’s industrial heritage.
