HISTORY

Reading’s history dates to the medieval period. Even in the 8th century Reading was an important trading and ecclesiastical centre. Reading Abbey, a monastery with strong royal connections is one of Europe’s largest and wealthiest medieval buildings.

Founded by Henry I in 1121, it is also his burial place; the remains of the Abbey, a Grade I listed site have benefited from a £3.15 million conservation scheme and will re-open to the public in the summer of 2018. The Reading Museum, located in the beautiful Town Hall showcases the

history of the town including galleries, artefacts, art collections and a stunning Victorian replica of the Bayeux Tapestry.

Just 25 miles north of Reading is the historic city of Oxford, known worldwide for its prestigious University which was established in the 12th century. Known as the ‘city of dreaming spires’ it is a very special city to have so close to Reading Riverside. Similarly, less than 20 miles to the East sits the charming and historic town of Windsor, home to Windsor Castle, a residence of the British Royal Family.

Offering over 350 undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught by leading academics it is also the home of the Henley Business School. Just 25 miles north of Reading you will find the World-renowned Oxford University – the oldest University in the Englishspeaking world, globally recognised for its academic success.

Reading has some of the best schools available in the UK and progression to both Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities is high in Reading.

The Reading Borough boasts the best A level results in the country with 3 schools in the top 100 and 3 schools in the top 50 in the country for GCSE results. The Reading University Technical College has become the first school of its kind to be awarded ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

CONNECT ONE OF THE BEST CONNECTED TOWNS IN EUROPE

Conveniently located close to the M4, between the North Wessex Downs and the Chiltern Hills, travel by car could not be easier, whether heading to the University town of Oxford in the north, the metropolis of London in the East, Southampton and the Isle of Wight to the South or the historic city of Bath to the West. Reading Riverside is perfectly located, just a short walk from the town centre yet offering easy access and hassle free travel by car to major link roads.

Having recently benefited from an astounding £900m upgrade, Reading Railway Station is not only spectacular, but is one of the busiest rail hubs in Britain used by nearly 20 million passengers a year. It connects Reading to London’s Paddington in less than half an hour with over 200 trains per day, as well as providing links to the north,

south, east and west by rail. In October 2019 Crossrail will link Reading and London Liverpool Street and Reading will be the most westerly station on the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) linking Reading with central London, the City and Docklands. Reading provides direct links to the main hub airports in the UK – Heathrow within 38 minutes and Gatwick within 75 minutes.

Reading also boasts an award-winning bus company as well as many cycle routes, it is located on several of the UK’s Sustrans Routes (routes 4, 5 and 23) linking the town with Oxford, Newbury and Basingstoke.
