The Grand New Step into Daeil Foreign Language Highschool

by Boo Yerin Big, brown doors are open, revealing a large hall with rows of chairs lined up in a neat manner. To the left, seven flags are hung high from the ceiling. Teachers dressed formally are hurrying about, organizing and adjusting things here and there. Some students have already found their seats and sitting, and waiting anxiously for the big event to begin.

Before the ceremony started, the music teacher went up to the podium to teach the school song. Though unfamiliar and awkward at first, the students quickly learned the lyrics along with the melody. Soon enough the school song, sung by 300 new Daeil students, was ringing through the hall.

Then came the moment when they all had been waiting for – the starting of the Entrance ceremony. The teacher announced the opening statements and led the pledge of allegiance, followed by the singing of the national anthem. Everyone was calm and still- this pledge of allegiance was so much different than the ones they had recited before. The silence was soon broken by loud applause as the student body representative was led to the stage. With a loud, strong voice he made an oath, officially naming the students gathered in the hall and himself, the 31st class of Daeil Foreign Language Highschool.

Afterwards, awards were given to students who had shown excellence in their entrance exams. They all received prizes with proud, satisfied smiles, and the rest of the students sent their congratulations with a warm applause. Following the award ceremony, the principal was led onto the stage to introduce the first grade homeroom teachers. Every student leaned in, squinting their eyes to get a better glimpse of their teacher, wondering who they will spend the year with.

The principal then made a speech, welcoming the freshmen students to the school. He mentioned about the life they will have for the next three

At the end of the Entrance ceremony was the celebratory performance by Daeil’s performing clubs. The dance club, G.O. caught the student’s attention with their dazzling dance moves. The choir, Barcelole’s harmonious songs amazed the students. The collaboration performance of Daeil’s orchestra and Hwimori left the students gaping in awe. When the last performance had ended, the students were led to their homerooms to meet their new teachers and friends.

The entrance ceremony had come to a close, and the newly named students of Daeil walked down the steps of Su-In Gwan, seeing 3 bright years in front of them.

This is the first sight of what the Daeil freshmen would have seen of Daeil Foreign Language Highschool. On March 3rd, 2014, they would have gone through the same doors, faced the same scenery in front of them, and braced themselves for the 3 exciting years ahead. The day held the 31st Entrance ceremony, and the hall of Su-In Gwan was filled with excited buzzing.

years and wished them good luck. Their thoughts wandered through the happy memories they will make, the friends that they will meet, and the things they will learn. The simple thought of it made them tingle with anticipation. With his final closing words, the principal left the stage, and the students were told to get up from their seats for a chorus of the school song. Now, singing the song as a student of Daeil, it felt quite different than before, with a new sense of belonging and responsibility.

The Meeting of the Juniors and Seniors

On May 29th, 2014, Daeil Foreign Language High school organized an event to provide an opportunity for the juniors to meet the seniors. This was the first time Daeil has hosted such an event and despite the cloudy weather, the event ran as smoothly as planned.

The purpose of the event was simple.

Firstly, it was to let the juniors get comfortable with the seniors. This was the first time the juniors officially met the seniors, and the seniors gave some words of advice, tips, and even a few words of encouragement. For some junior students, the seniors might have seemed difficult to approach. However through this event, they were able to break down the barriers standing between them and get to know each other and create a more intimate relationship. Secondly, it was to relieve some of the stress the juniors were feeling towards their new environment.

Juniors, at the time, might have felt anxious or nervous about their new surroundings. It had only been a few weeks since their entrance ceremony and the juniors were off to a new start at a new school. Many of them were stressed over making new friends, meeting their homeroom teachers, and finding their way around the school. This event played a role in relaxing their nervesand making them feel at home.

The event included many activities.

The appointment of the new class

presidents was one of them. The representative of the class presidents was brought up to the stage and given a certificate. Before this, though the juniors did enter Daeil High School, they would have still felt like middle school students in a large sense.

However looking at the class president representative receiving his certificate, it truly seemed like they were now a part of the Daeil community. As if to celebrate this moment, 2 female class presidents sang a song dedicated to the seniors. They sang the song ‘I’ll show you’ terrifically and both the juniors and the seniors seemed to have enjoyed the performance.

Also, one of the most important elements of the event was the speech, given by the representative of the juniors. The refreshing and warming speech showed the junior’s gratitude and appreciation for the seniors, teachers and the school. The speech included the new juniors’ determination and will to follow the footsteps of the past seniors and accomplish success they had achieved. This speech was followed by the reciprocating speech of the senior representative, showing signs of welcome and greetings. It showed the mindset of the seniors, ready to welcome the new juniors to Daeil High School and create a harmonious student body.

The highlight of the event was the seniors and juniors meeting each other

one-on-one and the seniors giving the juniors their hand-written letters. The activity allowed the juniors and seniors to meet more personally. Letters that were given to the juniors had an impact on the activity as well. It wasn’t just a card with meaningless words on it, but was rather filled with sincere words from the seniors which touched the heart of many juniors.

The meeting of the juniors and seniors wasn’t just an ordinary school event.

Although it might not have included the most fascinating activities or stunning performances, it undoubtedly played a big role in terms of helping the juniors.

The appointing of the class presidents marked the start of the junior’s life in Daeil, the speeches showed the appreciation and respect the juniors and seniors had, and the letters and greetings helped the different grades to become closer to each other. Overall, this was a key moment to the students in that it gave juniors a moment to bond with the seniors, truly becoming one unified student body.

The Daeil Hanmadang Fierce Competition and Harmony in School Campus

It was the first time to hold Hanmadang in school, so there were some problems. Firstly, the sunshine made the students very exhausted. Because of the hot weather, some students gave up cheering and went under the tent. What was worse, the place was too small to accept all the students so it was rather uncomfortable. Also the perfomance of G.O & Huimori(the Korean traditional folk music group), and the relay-racing were all canceled. Instead, there were some fresh attempts by the Student Council which made the students joyful, and it relieved some of the complaints of the students.

There was also a sport event called futsal which recieved a lot of support from the students. Many male students showed their nice skills and all the students were excited about their fantastic goals. However, there were some flaws. Futsal stadium was too small for 12 players to play in, which made it a little boring.

Meanwhile, the Student Council’s effort for Hanmadang didn’t end. The president of each classes guarded every gate of the school so we could enjoy Hanmadang without worrying about the security. Installation of kiosks was also a very good decision because it helped us to keep cool by drinking cold drinks.

Every match was so dynamic because of the players’ passion.

They showed off their skills which made the competition even more fascinating. But the most impressive thing was the “Cheering”. The International, Western and the Oriental team each showed their fantastic and creative cheering performances. It made Daeil Hanmadang much more fun and intense, and it also helped students who didn’t take part in the match to enjoy. Moreover, the cheering between the International and the Western during the match made the Deail Hanmadang even more harmonious.

As a result, the Western won dramatically and won the passion award, International ranked second place and got a teamwork award, and the Oriental won a popularity award.

The Daeil Hanmadang this year was very special because it was held in school. There were few problems but it made Hanmadang much more fun. Although Hanmadang will be held in Jamsil gymnasium from next year, nobody will forget this year’s meeting which was held on the school campus.

In April, we heard the news about the terrible accident regarding the Sewol ferry. It made Korea fall into sadness.

Because of it, lots of schools canceled their school trip, festival and athletic meeting. However, Daeil Hanmadang was held by the Student council’s favor. Although the attempt to hold it in Jamsil gymnasium failed, the meaning of opening the athletic meeting was worthy enough. And finally, on May 21st, Daeil Hanmadang was held in school amid many people’s expectation and anxiety.

What is Teacher’s day?

In Korea, Teachers’ Days are intended to be special days for the appreciation of teachers, and may include celebrations to honor them for their special contributions in a particular field area, or the community in general. This day is especially meaningful in that teachers and students can communicate and interact with each other.

On May 15th, there was a precious event as we know, Teacher’s Day. Though this year’s event wasn’t the same as last year’s ceremony because of a national disaster this was an unforgettable day for students and teachers.

Teacher’s Day is an annual event students sincerely express their appreciation toward teachers with cakes, flowers, and presents. All teachers are highly impressed with the gratitude of students..

After celebrating in school we met several other teachers including club, elementary school and middle school teachers to greet them. Some of them might forget us but, we gave thanks from the heart.

Last year most of the ceremonies were held in Dasan Hall, that school hosted after each classes’ ceremony. Except for some presidents of classes, all the students and their homeroom teachers saw the event on the TV in their classrooms. This year however, instead of doing it, the whole event was held in the classroom. This was such a sorry point for school freshmen but we should pay our respect toward Sewol-ship victims.

Students in Daeil didn’t forget about club teachers! When the ceremony in the classroom was over, each club member gathered and spent time together taking pictures and chatted with each other. At the end, we gave them presents, cakes, and letters.

While spending busy life in high school, we almost cannot recognize the contribution of our teachers. However, we could show our gratitude for them thanks for Teacher’s Day. This year’s teacher day was a little bit quiet, even compare with last year we could express our mind toward teachers.

On the 25th of May, the 5th DMUN, the ‘Daeil Model United Nations’ was held in Daeil Foreign Language High School.

DMUN is a contest where students do the same thing as the UN. There are about 40 rules, and one should follow all these rules during the debate. However, among the 40 rules, there are those that are highly necessary for the debate. They are called the ‘General Debate’, ‘Moderated Caucus’, and the ‘Unmoderated Caucus’.

First, the General Debate means the whole process of DMUN. The Chair opens a speaker’s list, and the delegates are allowed to make a speech during this time. The time is limited to 90 seconds each, and if one fails to fill the time, he or she has to use the time in four ways; yield to the chair, to another delegate, to points of information, or to comments.

Other than the general debate, moderated caucus is also very important. It occurs when a delegate raises a motion to hold it, and during this time, delegate who is wishing to speak is allowed to make a suggestion or an argument related to the agenda.

Furthermore, unmoderated caucus also exists. It is where all delegates walk around and have a discussion with whoever they want. Also, if he or she is planning to make one’s resolution pass, one has to make a lot of supporters. The more supporters the one make, the better chance their resolution will pass.

Of course, the rules were very difficult for all students, especially to the first graders, since it was their first time participating in DMUN. So in order to teach them, the second and the third graders opened

For this contest, the given agenda was ‘Resolving the conflicts in the revolutions of Middle East’. Each time, before opening the contest, all the students select a country. Once the countries are chosen, he or she has to act as a delegate of that certain country. One’s country might not be related to the certain topic, but there still are many ways to participate even if one’s country is not related.

Meanwhile, during the contest, the delegates were all willing to speak. As a result, a lot of effective solutions came out. In the end, 2 resolutions came out, but unfortunately only one of them passed. One of the solutions among those in the passed resolution was to institutionalize a new organization called MEPS, ‘Middle East Protection and Support’.

After the meeting was motioned to adjourn, there was a small entertaining event. Several categories were given, and one of them was choosing ‘The person who looks most similar to an animal’. To make it even more fun, each selected delegates were forced to sing or dance on the stage.

DMUN may seem very stressful and difficult, but there are lots of things that one can attain from it.

Searching for materials regarding a certain country, and speaking only in English for about 8 hours can help you improve. Most of all, the good part is that it doesn’t require any high English skills. If a person is able to express their opinion confidently, the one would be able to participate well in the contest.

June Is the Cruelest Month First-Grade Students at Deail Suffering from an Overload of Performance Assessments

Glorious May has gone, and June came to panic the first-grade students at Daeil. They were shocked at the deadly schedule of June written on the blackboard. In June, all students had to take two exams – regular evaluation test and a mathematics and English competition test. What made things worse was that students had to work on performance assessments that range from a math exam to a speech in foreign languages.

The students took additional mathematics exam, which will be included in their grades at the end of this semester. The test was so difficult that most of the students’ test scores were pretty painful for them. Not only that, a group project has started in Korean class, so they had to prepare for a debate in groups. In English conversation class, students had to give a short speech in front of their classmates, and other foreign language classes gave various kinds of assessment tasks to students. In addition, math homework check made many students struggle to solve mathematics questions overnight, and Korean homework check is coming in early July, which makes them even busier.

As too many kinds of things to do are all packed in a month, many students are having difficulties. A student in Chinese class said that performance assessment became difficult in general compared to that of his middle school, and the amount of it also increased. He said that it was a great pressure for him. This is not an exaggeration since almost everything that students do in class was included in grades, so students were always preparing for performance assessment. Adding to it, they went through important and demanding assessments like the ones that are mentioned above.

June is a busy period for every student including all the second grade students, but for the freshmen, it was worse since it was their first time. I hope that this harsh time was a good experience for them, so that they can deal with it more easily next time.

Then, I moved to the “All Male” middle school in Busan. There I taught English communication classes.

Chris (English Teacher) How did you come to Korea and how long did you stay in Korea?

From 2007 to 2009, I stayed in Eastern Europe. There I taught students. When the contract with the United States ended, I had to move to another country. Actually, I’m interested in learning different languages, and I chose Korean. I have lived in Korea for 4 years, since 2010.

Do you have any educating experiences before coming to Daeil Foreign Language High School?

Before coming to Daeil Foreign Language High school, I taught students in Technical High school.

I’m so impressed because students in Daeil have a high level of English skill. They can fully understand English, and they can fluently communicate with foreign teachers. They are also very creative, so that every students participate well on their classes.

In Daeil, I have to care a lot about time management. I have to prepare a lot for every classes, and give feedback to hundreds of students. I have to be fully organized and prepared. The score of every students are related to their university, so I have to be alert about every students’ scores. I have to be very precise on giving scores.

Are there any diffeences between Korean and American students?

The big difference is their preparation for the university. In America, most of high school students on your age finish their school at 3pm and playing sports or video games with their friends. I was very surprised that every students are

What is your hobby?

I enjoy reading about the history of different countries because my major is history. I like to go outside, and I enjoy many individual sports. I love hiking, taekwondo, and marathon.

Have you experienced any hardships in Korea?

I don’t have any hardships in Korea, but sometimes I was frustrated. I can speak many basic Korean, but when I ask questions to Koreans I ate while in Korean, they have trouble understanding my Korean words.

Some people gave up understanding my Korean words. I think I should learn more Korean words^^

What is your favorite Korean food?

My favorite Korean food is “Andongstyle Braised Spicy Chicken with Vegetables. (Andong jjim dak)” Andong jjim dak is the first Korean food in Korea. My wife’s hometown is also Andong, so I had many opportunities to eat jjim dak. It is very delicious!

Would you please introduce yourself briefly?

My name is Yoon Hyung Shin, and I am a senior of Duksung Woman’s University. I’m majoring in Spanish Literature, and I am also taking courses to become a teacher. So I am here to complete my imperative internship course.

Is there any particular reason you want to become a school teacher?

You know, most high school students have only a little time to think about what they want to be. Well, I was no exception. While applying for the college, I had a hard time deciding which major I should take. Finally, I decided to be one of those who are in the school environment.

I want to know the reasons why you chose Spanish Literature as your major.

At first, I didn’t have any interest in Spanish Literature. However, I loved learning new languages and studying them, including Chinese. It was so fun and exciting to learn, especially Spanish. The Spanish instructor I met in high school was the most influential figure behind my decision, who was also my HR teacher. She suggested that I choose Spanish as my major because the languageis a mother tongue in many countries. I was convinced that it would provide a promising future for me.

I heard that you have been to Spain. What was the most impressive moment?

The biggest one was food. Paella, jamón, and a lot of fruits. They were new and fresh to me, and also very delicious. They were somewhat similar to Korean food. It was a pretty surprising experience for me. In addition, Spain is famous for its resort places, since the beaches are very relaxing and soothing. Also, it has excellent weather.

When I began to learn Spanish, all I did was to accept the linguistic information of the Spanish language with no doubt. I had never questioned why. However, when I came to Daeil, some students asked me questions about grammar or structure. They kept asking. At first, not being able to answer the questions was very embarrassing. But I slowly changed my attitude and mindset towards learning Spanish. Now I have realized that I have to think more about Spanish. Thanks for helping me review what I had learned before!

Was there anything that made you want to stay in our school?

I was so sad that my internship period and Daeil’s mid-term test schedule happened to fall in the same month. In the first week I worked as a helping teacher, so I had no class at all. All I could do was just look at the back of the students on morning gatherings and have a short talk with them in times like introduction at the end meetings in the afternoon. Also, I felt very disappointed because of the fact that assistant teachers were just allowed to have 4 classes. I wish I had had more time with the students.

Could you give us some advice?

One of your school teachers told me to wake up students falling asleep during the self-study time. However, it was too hard to shake students out of sleep. I just wanted to let them sleep. Of course, I was very glad to see students doing their best on their work. They made me look back on my past, and it made me think that they were doing well. I hope they will keep on their hard work! Finally, I hope students think about their role models earlier than me. I’m finding my own right now.

Now is the time for you to think about who your role model is. It will definitely help you find your future career and become a master of your own life.

On April 24th, the writer of this article interviewed the student teacher who take charge of 1st grade 5-6 class. (Teacher Peak Jinsol and Lym Hanbin) From this interview, I could get their honest opinions and new looks. It was a precious time.

Q: I’ve heard th.7ou chose Daeil Foreign Language Highschool as a place to do student teaching. Is there a specific reason?

Han T : First of all, this school is my old school so I was curious about how it changed, and I wanted to meet my mentor. Actually, he put my ideal image of an instructer into practice, so I dreamed to become a teacher like him. I came here for these reasons.

Jin T : Me too. The fact that this school was my highschool acts as a decisive factor. Somehow, the affection and feelings still remain a lot here.

In : Oh, you are my seniors. Could you tell me what graduation classes you are in?

Jin T : I’m in 23rd. and Teacher Han is in 22nd.

In : Then were you acquainted or did you see each other in high school days?

Jin T : I’ve seen him several times in my daily school life. Also he helped me as a private lesson teacher when I was preparing for Japanese special admission.

Q: When you compare with your life in Daeil, is there any dramatic changes in these days’ school life?

Int : You have spent a lot of time with 6 classmates talking during breaks, and having meals with them. Is there a reason for it?

Han T : Meeting students only in class hours didn’t

Jin T : When I was a member of Daeil, students were very persistent

Jin T : For me, the most memorable experience is when I gave lessons to you guys. Above all, it was my first time to be a teacher so I was filled with emotions, and as if by magic, the pleasure built up every time I gave classes.

Q: You have been living as a student teacher although the time was short.

Was there a message that you want to convey to us?

Jin T : I was a student too. when I was a student, I thought teacher’s words were annoying. But now I’m in the teacher’s position and I can comprehend teacher’s mind which I never understood before.

Also I felt that the teachers consider about students very much. I wish you to understand the teacher’s stance a little bit more. One more thing. Each day is same and it’s easy to spend the day meaningless.

But when you see it later there are many small joyful occasions.

Han T : I agree. There are things you can only do in high school.

Jin T : Thus I tried to tell you to spend time meaningfully day-to-day.

But I don’t know whether it was conveyed to our students.

Han T : It was a short time but I want to tell students “to live this life without remorse”. And do your best.

Q: What do you want to do when you become a Teacher?

Han T : At first, I want to be a teacher.

Jin T : First I would like to say not to complain about school meals. Your meals are better than universities’.

Jin T : And I hope you have the habit of treating small things as precious. For example, once I was really upset about having a lot of assignments but I changed the way. Q: This is the last question. Do you have a mind to be a teacher in Daeil later?

Han T : Of course I do.

After The Sewol Ferry sunk, citizens pay more attention to safety. However, as if mocking at the Korean society’s safety level, starting with the accident of The Sewol Ferry, a lot of safety accidents followed.

1. Collision of trains in Sangwangsimni Station This accident happened on May 2nd. At three thirty-six in the afternoon, two trains collided on the railway tracks - way of Station. Number 2258 train stopped for a minute because of machine problem, but the engineer of the following train, number 2260 train, didn’t notice it. Number 2260 train stopped too late, consequently two trains collided. Police investigated detailed cause of this accident. The number 2258 train stopped because the doors didn’t work properly, and started again after about 2 minutes. However, the engineer of number 2258 train didn’t report this delay to the control center, so the engineer of number 2260 train noticed it just before the train entered Sangwangsimni Station. There was no time to avoid the collision of the two trains. After the collision, two cars in the end of number 2258 train derailed. The engineers and about 200 passengers got hurt because of this accident. 58 ambulances and fire trucks came to transport injured people to the nearby hospitals. People who were at the accident mainly complained of back pain. Fortunately, there were no patients with severe pain. Because of this accident, 9 stations from Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station to Seongsu Station of line number 2 had interrupted train service for about 8 hours.

This accident definitely showed the safety ignorance problem of Korean society.

40 years passed after the opening of the subway, and machines are worn out, so many breakdowns and accidents occurred more frequently. However, the regulation of the government keeps loosing. Especially, the revision of the railway safety law in 2012 deleted the limit use of trains that used over 20 years, and this revision allows worn-out trains to keep running. Two trains of recent accident in Sangwangsimni Station also got this benefit - number 2258 train was used for 24 years, and number 2260 train was used for 25 years.

2. Collapse of the building in Garosu-gil Road of Sinsa-dong This accident happened on May 10th.

At twelve in the afternoon, a building in Sinsa-dong suddenly collapsed. It is known that as one side of fourth floor collapsed, the building couldn’t maintain its balance and collapsed. This six-story building was under dismantling construction. Because of the collapse of this building, pieces were poured to the roads, so citizens experienced discomfort.

At first, it was reported that no one was hurt. However, 3 citizens who were in the next building of the collapsed building when the accident occurred, got hurt. One man got hurt on the nose because of the debris, and two women got hurt of knees and ankles during the escape from the accident.

Also, possibility of secondary damage like a gas leak was brought up, too. Police started an investigation to the persons concerned.

The sinking of the Sewol occurred on 16 April 2014 on the way to Jeju from Incheon. The Sewol ferry sank while carrying 476 people including 325 secondary school students from Danwon High School and 30 crew members.

Although it was officially announced that everyone was saved, it turned out to be wrong.

The Sewol ferry is known as 6835-ton vessel which travels from Incheon to Jeju. It was manufactured by Japan in 1994 and had sailed from Kagoshima to Okinawa for about eighteen years. Then it was out of commission in September 2012. Since then, the Sewol ferry sailed in Korea.

During the accident, many passengers who were seen just after the sinking of the Sewol ferry were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels.

However, inaccurate broadcasting such as just sit down and wait without moving made the incident very tragic. Until now, the search operation is being conducted steadily despite the nasty weather. The number of missing men is 16, and the survivors are 172 people. Regretfully, the number of those who are dead is 288. Thirty eight days have passed since the tragedy occurred, but the families waiting still haven’t given up. Moreover the condolence of the citizens is increasing on a national scale and is spreading all over the world. The sinking of the Sewol has resulted in widespread social and political reaction. There is an ongoing recovery effort by the South Korean government, but it cannot replace the sorrow of the families of the dead students

Meanwhile, the causes of the sinking of Sewol have been a big issue among the whole nation and the whole world. There are two main causes of it. The first main reason is regarded to the captain and the three crew’s reaction after the sinking happened. The captain’s reaction was strongly criticized by the South Korean government and the media for his selfish response and low responsibility. The ferry operators and regulators were also condemned for their irresponsible conducts. As a result, the captain and the three crew members were charged with murder, while the other eleven members of the crew were indicted for abandoning the ship on 15 May 2014.

The authority of criminal is considering that the second reason of the accident is that the crew suddenly altered the direction of the ship which caused the cargos to be one-sided. They are wondering why the crew suddenly altered the direction of the ship,but it seemed to be impossible for the Sewol ferry to sink just because of the one-sided freights. In other words, the rigid inspections of the Sewol ferry before sailing and the principles of the safety priority were completely neglected.

Election Day – Wednesday June 4th 2014 South Korean president Park Geun-hye’s ruling party posted a solid showing in local elections that had been billed by some as a referendum on the government’s handling of the recent ferry disaster.

The results showed roughly an equal number of wins for the main parties, including Ms. Park’s, in their traditional strongholds. Voter turnout was around the same level as the previous election, suggesting no sudden increase in a protest vote.

In the run up to elections that included ballots for municipal council members and head education administrators, some opposition parties portrayed the day as a chance for the public to cast judgment on Ms. Park’s administration.

Ms. Park’s approval ratings have fallen sharply since the April 16 ferry tragedy that killed around 300 people, most of whom were high school students. The opposition and national media have accused the government of mishandling the initial search and rescue mission. Ms. Park has made several apologies and fired some senior officials.

The campaign for voters to punish the government appeared to win little momentum, as the conservative Saenuri Party won eight provincial governor and main cities’ mayor seats, while the left-of-center New Politics Alliance for Democracy won nine. In smaller municipalities, Ms. Park’s party won the largest number of seats.

Voter turnout was 56.8%, compared with 54.5% at the 2010 election, according to the National Election Commission.

The Seoul mayor position is often regarded as a stepping stone to the presidency and Mr. Park, who is no relation to the president, is often mentioned as a possible successor.

His rival was Chung Mong-joon, a prominent political and business figure. If confirmed, Mr. Chung’s loss would mean the lawmaker’s exit from the National Assembly and a possible return to Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s largest shipbuilder, where he holds a controlling stake.

The Shooting Rampage in GOP #1: June 21st, 2014 8:15 PM The shooting took place in the 22nd Division, in Gangwondo, Goseong-gun. Sergeant Lim randomly fired his gun, and threw a hand grenade toward his comrades. Lim and others belong to the GOP(General Outpost), where they have to guard the country’s front line picket. After the shooting, Lim made a run for his life, leaving five people dead, and seven severely wounded.

#2: June 22nd, 2014 2:23 PM

At a place about 10 kilometers away from the first shooting spot, Lim was found with armed force. Lim and the force had a small battle, which ended up with making one more soldier wounded from a gunshot. The total casualties from this happening ended up being 8, and Lim once again, ran away.

#3: June 23rd, 2014 8:20 AM The military force found Lim in Hyeonnae-myun, which is about 3 kilometers away from the previous place. Then, they began to approach him, and persuaded him to surrender.

Sergeant Lim asked the soldiers to allow him to call his father. To his request, three soldiers threw a cell phone and some food to Lim from a far distance. Lim called his father, and ate some of the food that they gave to him. Later, Lim’s father and his older brother began to talk Lim into surrendering, along with other soldiers.

2:55 PM Thinking that there was no other choice, Lim committed suicide after writing his suicide letter. He shot himself in between his left shoulder and chest. However, this ended up to be a failure, and while Lim lost consciousness, he was transferred to a nearby hospital by the military force that were waiting for him.

The Suicide Letter and the Truth Through the suicide letter, Lim is assumed to have committed the shooting rampage because he was not able to make good relationships with others, and therefore, was bullied. In the letter, he states that he is sorry for the people who he had hurt, and for their families. There also have been some witnesses from his fellow soldiers and family, mentioning that Lim was always not very good at getting along with new people. In fact, when Lim was entering the army, he was diagnosed with a mental health problem. However, the Military Manpower Administration ignored the fact and treated him just like a normal soldier. It was only recently founded that Lim was not the only one treated this way. When entering the army, there is a humanity test that people have to take. If the army finds someone who has a mental problem, they take the person and do another test, including some individual interviews.

Still, this test has a very small influence when picking people for the army. It has already been researched that 85% of the people who were diagnosed with mental problems are still assigned to the army with no special treatment. This is because of the decreasing population of Korea, and also the shorter period of service of a soldier. Eventually, everything leads to a conclusion that a huge tragedy like this Gop

Shooting Rampage can always happen again, unless a fast and effective solution is enforced to take care of the soldiers who are supposed to be taken care of – the ones that have some problems mentally, and emotionally. Therefore, a strong action must be taken by the government, to prevent creating ‘the second Lim’ in the future.

Korea is suffering from the "Sewol Liner Tragedy". The whole nation is in sorrow after 4/16. But it is not the first accident. There were many huge marine accidents before this.

1. Changgyeong Ferry

The king of Changgyeong ferry occurred on January 9, 1953 off the coast of Busan. The ferry was on her way from Tongyeong to Busan. The number of the passengers were estimated 236, but the number of not allowed passengers was over 500. There were only 7 survivors left.

The main reason for the tragedy was that life vests and lifeboats were not equipped. Overloading of passengers and freight is also one of the reasons. Especially many merchants were in the ferry to purvey goods for New Year’s Day, and for the same reason, 400 bags of rice were loaded. Due to this heavy loading, the ship lost resiliency. In this desperate situation, the ferry met heavy wind. Understandably, the ship tilted and sank into cold water. Most of the passengers died due to hypothermia just like the people on the Titanic. passengers to stay in their rooms. Most of the passengers obeyed it because they were students. Although the passengers abided by the announcement, the captain and most of the crew escaped through a secret exit.

It is the biggest marine accident that Korea has ever had, and the first accident in which the number of rescued people after sinking was zero.

Sewol Ferry sank on April 16, 2014 off the coast of Jin island.

It sank because of immoderate extension and overloading.

Cheonghaejin marine company bought this ship in 2012, and used it as a liner that sailed between Incheon and Jeju.

Before the ship began sailing, Cheonghaejin remodeled it and enlarged the full complement of the ship.

The full complement of the ship was 921, and the number of passengers were 476. But the loaded freight was about 1157 tons, including 180 cars. The overloadedl liner veered near the coast of Jin island. The huge amount of goods was jumbled up and the ship lost its stability. As the ship sank, the captain instructed the passengers to stay in their rooms.

Most of the passengers obeyed it because they were students.

Although the passengers abided by the announcement, the captain and most of the crew escaped through a secret exit.

The Yellow Sea Ferry was the ferry that periodically shuttled from Gyeopo to Wi island. It sank on October 10, 1993 off the coast Wi island. The number of the passengers were 372, which was 141 over the maximum number of passengers of the ferry. Also, because it was gimjang season, lots of anchovy sauce was loaded in the front part of the ship. Despite bad weather, the ship departed, but it was shaking heavily because of the unbalanced load. Finally, the ship sank near the deatination.

Unlike Sewol Liner’s case, captain of Yellow Sea Ferry was found dead in the communications room. Miraculously, all the bodies were found, even though the weather was very bad.

There were about 470 people and most of them were the students of ‘Danwon’ High school who went on a school excursion to Jeju Island. According to the Coast Guard of Mokpo, the accident of Sewol Ferry occured at 8:55, 20km north of Jodomyeon Byeongpungdo Jindo Jeonnam. It was on the route from Incheon to Jeju Island.

Although the captain and sailors of Sewol Ferry already recognized the disequilibrium of the ferry, they didn’t take any emergency measures. They even said that the passengers should not move and must stay in their rooms. At that time, the media reported that all of the passengers on Sewol Ferry were rescued safely. When it turned out to be wrong, it made everybody annoyed and irritated.

After Sewol Ferry sank, many people guessed what the cause of the sinking wass; striking a rock, defects of the ship, unfavorable conditions of climate etc. Actually, Sewol Ferry was used for a long period, about 20 years.

A shipping company CheongheJin bought Sewol Ferry which was made in 1994 for the first time in 2012 from Japan. After having bought it, the company remodeled it regardless of the safety issues. As a result, the ship tilted and sank as the captain abruptly changed course.

What was worse, at that time, the ferry carried a lot of cargo the quantity of which was illegal because of safety regulations.

Plenty of divers went to Jin Do to support the relief work.

However, the ocean current was too swift to go under the sea. Many parents of students of Danwon High school cried continuously and complained about the incompetence of the government. Messages which were sent by students before Sewol Ferry sank made many people depressed and mournful. What was the most annoying thing about this accident that made everybody

surprised was the captain of Sewol Ferry was the first rescued person. He didn’t consider the safety of the passengers at all.

In addition, most of the sailors in Sewol Ferry were rescued more quickly than the passengers. On the other hand, there were brave sailors and ordinary people who helped other people although it was a critical moment for them too.

There was some hopes that the survivors would appear when the bow of Sewol Ferry was left on the surface of the sea, because some experts guessed that the air pocket could be in the bow. However, Sewol Ferry sank completely and no survivors were found. Many group memorial altars were founded in many cities, and men, women and children have cherished the deceased people with the yellow ribbons.

Korea is suffering from severe despair. It is because of a tragic incident happened in April, the submersion of Sewol ferry.

Millions of people in Korea have expressed their deep condolence over victims of this accident. Recently, it has been clear that Sewol Ferry tragic affected people in Korea not only mentally but also financially. Current economic flows of Korea have changed, influenced by the tragedy.

Generally, when people have undergone a severe incident, they are inclined to reduce their consumtion. The tragedy of Sewol Ferry precisely showed this phenomenon. The usage of credit card decreased by 4% compared to last month. More specifically, the usage of credit card on entertainment lessen by 5.3%, eating out by 6.2%, buying new furniture by 13.4% and mostly watching sports game has decreased by 30.4%. People have reduced spending their money on leisure time since then.

The tragedy of Sewol ferry directly influenced the tour agencies and shipping industry. The transport and tour agencies were expecting great profits during the holidays in May. However, since the incident occurred, more people have been canceling their reservations for tickets and lodging has been increasing. Also, schools cancelled all of their plans for school trips. Therefore, the damage of tour agencies and airlines is unimaginable.

Experts on the economy have foreseen that the incident of Sewol ferry will even lead to the diminution of employment in the long term. It is because of the reduction of expense and the stagnation of tour agencies and the transport industry. They expect 7 million of jobs will decrease this. Furthermore, the rate of gross domestic product (GDP) has declined by 1%. This means the growth of Korea’s economy is paralyzed. It has also depressed the desire of consumption and led to the dullness of the domestic economy. The government is trying to present policies to prevent the further damage.

The tragedy of Sewol ferry is not just a simple incident. It has overpowered the whole country in various ways. The incident will be forgotten as time goes by, but it will still influence our life somehow. Even when we buy something at the supermarket.

Japan Diminishes Kono Statement

Japan stipulated “Kono Statement” as a fruit of Political Compromise

In June 20th, the “Abe Shinzo Cabinet of Japan announced a report that debilitates the 1992 August “Kono Statement*” which admitted their wrong, and expressed their regret.

“Japan accepted and denied the Korean government’s intention in a range of not distorting the actual fact.”

This is the part that states ‘conference principle’ between Japan and Korea in inspection of the “Kono statement”.

When we read instantly, it sounds like Korea had pushed them to revise and state it. But this is not the truth. The Korean government requested them to correct the historical truth, which Japan tried to distort as having close relation with this statement and as a damaged country.

The report introduced unrevealed discussions, the diplomacy minister talked and even the summit’s the reaction of both countries from 1990s when the comfort women* problem was raised. Through the report, they revealed the intent to degenerate the comfort women problem into a political subject, not to a past affairs subject.

The issue was service club installation, involvement of Japanese military and compulsion when recruiting comfort women. In the core of the statement there was a comfort woman compulsive haul.

It means ‘The Whole, person himself who was enlisted opposed to their will by flattery or pressure.’ About this, they

drive in a nail saying “We were not able to confirm the compulsive haul in the cognition which we’ve got in the results of a series of examinations.“ Also it gave a full account using the word “mediation” about Korea and Japan’s discussion of ‘Kono Statement’s’ Draft.

Also, they will urge Japan to acknowledge responsibility in related human right UN conference and international convention. The government will raise Japan’s Kono Statement reform as the agenda in the Korea-USA viceminister strategy meeting and will form the promotion committee to register comfort woman historic record as an item of World Heritage.

*Kono Statement: It is named after former Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono in 1993. In this statement Japan made a clear apology to the Korean women who were forced to work at Japanese military brothels.

*comfort women: Women who were forced into sexual slavery by Japan during World War II.

Election is the very basic means by which a nation can express their right to self-determination. There are many different types of election in Korea, and each of them have different purpose. As it plays a role in deciding our president, superintendent of education and members of congress it is very important for the country. Despite its significance a turnout is continuously decreasing ; 1995 year 68.4% to 2014 year 56.8%. To encourage people to participate in election, the Central Election Management Committee hire celebrities to cheer for them. Though these day’s turnout is significantly low compared to the past 2 decades, experts expect that it will start to rise again if the nation keep concerned about elections.

Before the election many candidates campaigned to win the election. Everyday their employees stood in front of the apartment entrances and gave people a lot of promotion. Most of them seemed to ignore their offer but, they kept campaigning. The number of promotions and campaign letters was overwhelming. But the information provided could be quite interesting as each candidate is required to provide a full background check including education, finances and criminal reward. Surprisingly some people did have criminal records but nothing worse than driving without insurance or failing to pay a hospital bill on time

June 4 was the local Election Day nationwide. This election was to cast preliminary vote to make more people attend the vote. There are many people who seemed to have a little confusion about this, as though Wednesday June 4th is not a official holiday, but it is a public holiday and the country closed most of the public schools companies and government offices. Election progressed from 6am to 6pm and many people went to polling place. After finishing their vote, many people pressed the stamp on the hand and took certification photos to post them on SNS.

The results of the election came the day after. In total 243 candidates including the governor were elected. They will serve for their residents for over 4 years and in 2018 there will be another local election. during their term there could be discord between leaders and residents. However, as they are the results of our election we should believe them and keep interest on them.

In this harsh education system, home schooling is making a meteoric rise in Korea, for alternative education instead of official school systems. However, there are some countries that do not take the same line. Let’s consider this problem which could be next generation’s mainstream education.

What makes them stick to the old style?

The history of ‘home schooling prohibition’ started since 1938, when Adolf Hitler obligated school education to inject totalitarianism in people.

The modern society of Germany strongly restrains home schooling for an other reason. In last December, according to Darmstadt local court, children are not able to be taught by a single third person. Children need to communicate with counterparts who have different ideas from one another.

Home schooling has rare chances to connect various people. On the contrary, Dr. Brian Ray who studied deep into homeschooling makes completely different asserts. “Home schooling is an education based on family; it’s not an education only for family. Study shows that children who learned from their parents at home

had higher sociality from psychological view. Home schooling is focused on specific student, so it’s more efficient to concentrate on a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Actually Dr. Brian Ray raised eight children by home schooling so naturally he supports home schooling.

There is a final problem to solve.

Still today, plenty of countries prohibit home schooling including Germany, Greece, Sweden, Croatia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Brazil and etc. The controversy of education will continue.

In 2012, President Park Geun-hye pledged to introduce a new educational policy the so-called “free learning semester system.”

It was designed to provide middle school students with a chance to search for their future careers through various kinds af activities in which you can experience jobs. In the free learning semester, students only take necessary subjects like Korean, mathematics and English, and use the rest of their curriculum time for career exploration, club activities, PE and art education.

To make sure that the students can wholly concentrate on their extra-curriculum activities, they do not take exams during this semester.

The government is expecting this policy to be a stimulus for the development of diverse career education and a paradigm shift for the conventional Korean educational system, which has only been putting an emphasis on informative education.

This new educational trial has been tested on 42 middle schools across the nation starting from last year, and this year, 25% of middle schools will introduce this free learning semester system to their first grade students. However, most schools are facing

However, a fundamental cause of these problems is the adults’ perception about jobs and social status. Parents want their children to get jobs that ensure economic stability, such as a physician or a lawyer, and they force them to study for such jobs. This makes students choose to enter academic high schools and endure three years of studying, rather than to apply for vocational schools, no matter what future career they actually want. As too many students are studying to enter university, intensive competition follows. Few winners in this war get the jobs that their parents dreamed of. Students who had lost in the competition could have become competent people in various fields if they had followed their own dreams, not the conventional thoughts of their parents. However, they usually end up entering fair-to-middling universities that fit their test scores, without sincere consideration about what they want to become. Nevertheless, parents’ top priority is whether their children win the competition, not their dreams.

That’s why half-done educational systems are introduced without enough preparation, and why these systems are not working.

In contrast, Ireland has a system called the transition year, which is similar with the free learning semester except that Irish students have a whole year for career exploration, and that they start the transition year after graduating middle school. This system is working effectively, helping students decide their futures with their own will. In Finland, students can get information about when and where they can apply

for job education programs from an official website called “Career Life Introduction Plaza (peda.net).” The significant difference between these countries and Korea is that most parents agree with the idea that it is important for teenagers to think about their future careers and get a chance to have various kinds of job experiences. The Korean government is only imitating superficial systems in good cases of job education, while the prevalent idea of adults about education has not changed.

Still, there exists a possibility for improvement. A growing number of students are choosing to enter vocational schools as the government is backing the schools with financial support and entrance examination policies advantageous for vocational school graduates. Vocational schools are not an alternative choice for those who fail to enter academic schools anymore. More parents are recognizing that studying for university does not always bring the best outcomes, and are respecting their children’s choices. This new policy, though it is showing many points to improve up, seems to fit this big flow of change – it only needs more time.

However, the actions that government is taking right now only seem to worsen the problem. Socially, this will result in the spread of neglect for science environment.

According to the table above, among all the examinees in the department of science and engineering, it was only thirty-nine percent of people who chose science. Especially, participant rates of the basic science ‘physics 1’ was 8.7 percent, so as ‘physics 2’ marked 0.9 percent. This leads us to the thought that even people majoring in it also avoid these difficult subjects like mathematics and physics. Lee Deok Hwan, the professor of Seo-Kang University, pointed out that the science basis in school is disappearing, adding the fact that almost sixty percent of high school students don’t take science classes, and schools have only one or two science teachers.

What is worse is that the number of science classes will be reduced from 15 to 10 (per week) based on the reorganization of the national curriculum: Unification of science programs and humanities.

Considering that our 10 export products are based on scientific technology, weak science education really can lead to a low national competitiveness. School is the only place to familiarize students to familiarize with science since the chances of contact with science will be low once they graduate a from school. Therefore, the government should foster students to learn at least little scientific knowledge at school.

Through this site, people can upload their own music or download voice samples to integrate into their formation. With a simple

interface, they can arrange the chosen voice samples to each post. They can also arrange detection zones, which allow them to order the “musicians” to play, using various gestures.

Once their orchestra is configured, they can direct it with the movements of their body.

When we upload our voice on the interface, people sort their voices into various categories; bass, vocal, keyboard, violin, drum etc. Then, the conductor conducts the orchestra with his or her movement. There is a camera which catches up the conductor’s motions and sends them to the computer screen to make a sound. create various melodies with the computer. Also, making music with this interface would be much easier and fun when learning music. At first, it might look very weird, difficult, and scientific, but it’s not. With just the computer and the interface, it will be very easy. Also, you could enjoy it too!

Eliminating almost 30% of Trade and Investment Regulations

The government declared that they will eliminate nearly one-third of the regulations related to trade and foreign investments. This means that all the unnecessary and excessive regulations will be removed.

Today, 62 regulations exist, and 17 of them will be removed, which would be the same as removing 29% of the regulations. Also, 11 of them will undergo some improvements.

However, those that are related to health or hygiene will remain. One of the 17 regulations that are being removed is one that applies to exporters of apples and pears to Taiwan. Although the regulation forced them to report every change in amount of investment

and nature, from now on, this will be removed. This elimination will bring a lot of advantage for the exporters.

Other than this, the regulation of the trade in electronic appliances experts will be removed.

There are a lot more regulations that will be removed, which will bring an advantage to a lot of companies and people, especially to foreigners.

Meanwhile, the regulations that are able to be revised will be settled as soon as possible. On the other hand, those that need the approval of the related department will probably be reconsidered next year.

The purpose of this decision to remove

regulations is to encourage the formation of new corporations and to lessen their burden. In addition, according to the press release, the ministry will continuously put effort into eliminating the unnecessary regulations. Also, the department of Industry plans to open the forum to listen regularly and discuss the elimination and improvement of regulations.

Although a lot of efforts were made, needless regulations still do exist.

Therefore, we should continuously keep an eye on this issue and look for ways to improve it.

Beggar Thy Neighbor Policy -becoming a global trend?

So-called ‘beggar thy neighbor policies’ implemented by several nations are bringing about a tension within the world economy. ’Beggar thy neighbor policy’ refers to an economic policy that promotes the business recovery of a specific nation by sacrificing its neighboring countries’ economies. The term was first used by an English female economist, Joan Robinson, to explain the reason for the prolonged persistence of the Great Depression around the world during the 1930s.

Robinson attributed a long term continuance of universal economic recession in those days to egoism, protective trade and exchange rate wars among nations and named such moves ‘beggar thy neighbor’.

Unfortunately, history repeats itself.

QE, an abbreviation for ‘Quantitative Easing’ can be regarded as a recent example of a beggar thy neighbor policy. Quantitative easing is defined as an economic policy that central bank employs to artificially lower currency value by increasing currency supply. Several developed nations including the United States of America, Great Britain and Japan have been supporting this policy after major financial crises.

The problem is that the currency of those countries could be devalued by employing such an economic tactic but on the other hand, overflowing liquidity will rush directly to developing nations around the world and will reversely raise the value of their currency. This is a serious problem for developing nations which primarily rely on trades in global market since they would lose competitiveness in exports, resulting from, as mentioned before, a relative appreciation of their currency. Ironically, developing nations utilizing QE can refine and reinforce their competitive power in export. In that this kind of quantitative easing conducted by certain countries shifts the burden of releasing money on the global market onto others, it can be considered as ‘beggar thy neighbor policy’ and therefore, it seems quite natural to state that such irresponsible moves should be strictly regulated.

Unfortunately, the international monetary system of these days is often called ‘non system.’ That is, any regulation or international consensus regarding the system is nonexistent. Accordingly, quantitative easing is ‘legitimate’ under this kind of structure. Due to this fecklessly designed scheme, Federal Reserve Board(Fed, Central bank of U.S.A), British Bank, the European Central Bank have recklessly used quantitative easing and recently, after Shinzo Abe taking office as a prime minister of Japan, the country has initiated to join

the global trend of ‘QE’. This is a real threat to South Korea since Japan is one of the largest destination of ‘made in South Korea products’.

Cooperation among nations can enable the development of the global economy as a whole but unfortunately, it is easier said than done. That’s all because of mutual distrust and resistance to give way between countries and that’s why beggar thy neighbor policies persist. This international tension and distrust concerning the economy is quite similar to the situation of the so-called ‘Prisoner’s Dilemma’. Just as accomplices who could have proved their innocence by coordinating with each other but took a chance and ended up in prison, without mutual trust among nations in the international economy, the recent global trend of beggar thy neighbor policies will thrive and countries around the world will have no choice but to engage themselves in this selfdevouring strategy.

Imagine living a life without cars, electricity, or any other artificiallymade goods. Life would undoubtely be very inconvenient and uncomfortable. Believe it or not, all these important factors in presentday life all stem from a single resource; oil. Having various usages, oil has become a resource that takes up a large proportion not only in technology, but also in our daily lives. For this reason, the prices of oil being exported to the world from the middle east is a very important factor in the market economy. However, due to the constant wars within Iraq, one of the largest oil suppliers in the world, the global oil market is facing a sudden increase in oil price.

Ever since the US army withdrew from Iraq in 2011, Shi’ah has been grasping political power. This led to the continuous conflict between the two groups, Sunni and Shi’ah. Then, as Shi’ah got a hold of the power once again in the April elections, the conflict deepened, even leading to terrorist activities led by the Sunnis. Consequently, this led to the current on-going domestic war in Iraq, with the Sunnis taking over most of the northern lands of the country.

The problem with this conflict in Iraq is that crude yields are heavily influenced by this event, especially in areas where violence is occurring.

Nearly 90% of Iraq’s oil reserves are located in the southern part of the land, which is slowly being taken over by Sunni. Experts expect oil prices to reach 120 dollars per barrel if the reserves in the south are

damaged-which is a very high possibility. Also, among the oil-exporting countries in the middle east, Iraq has shown the highest and fastest increase in production. This has made the prices of oil more sensitive to slight changes in the domestic circumstances.

Currently, the oil price in Korea has shown a 0.28 dollar increase per barrel, marking 110.74 dollars.

Similarly, the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) reported a 0.83 dollar increase from their last transaction. This shows the highest rate of increase since last September! In the short term, it is predicted that the global oil prices will remain around 110 dollars per barrel, until the circumstances improve.

Though many measures have been taken by neighboring countries to alleviate the conflict in Iraq, there has not been much improvement. Iran and Syria have been supporting Iraq’s government forces, and the U.S. is looking for ways to take part in the process as well. However, not even experts are sure how much this interference will help in terms of lowering the price of oil. All we can do, for now, is to watch how things turn out.

His latest release on June 8th, “Hangover”, is entertaining and paints a rather accurate picture of Korea’s intense drinking culture and rambunctious nightlife. The music video includes a story that the two people, Psy and Snoop Dogg, are struggling to recover from a hangover after an alcoholfueled night involving “bomb” cocktails, karaoke, billiards, bar fighting and vomiting.

Some believe that “Hangover” is just as catchy as “Gangnam Style”, which is a viral hit for receiving over 2 billion views to date. However, others complained that this song is just for the incessant product placement and Snoop Dogg’s ever-growing tendency to sell out.

2. AGAIN on Billboard On June 18th, Billboard.com announced that Psy’s new song, “Hangover” ranked 26th on Billboard Hot 100. His first album in America, “Gangnam Style”, ranked the second place for 7 weeks and the second album, “Gentleman”, ranked 5th on Billboard Hot 100. Historical Dramas, a Useful Tool or Falsified Information?

by Seo Hyunduk In Korea, historical dramas have been, for a long time, a popular genre in entertainment. Dramas such as “Dae Jo Yeong”, “Tears of Dragons” and many more have put the popularity of historical dramas at it’s peak.

Although it’s popularity had decreased for a brief moment, it soon increased again with the recent historical drama called ‘Jung Do Jun’.

‘Jung Do Jun’s sudden popularity brings up the question, “are historical dramas useful or can they have a negative effect on the viewers?” ‘Jeong Do Jeon’ is currently ranking 2nd place for the most viewed weekend drama and many other famous historical dramas have spread all over Asia.

Through this, we can see that many people watch historical dramas, thus we are able to predict that it has the possibility of having an impact on the viewers and their perception of history.

The upside to historical dramas is that it raises awareness about our own history in a way so that people are interested. It is much more intriguing to see dramas - containing various visual images, sound effects, and much more- instead of reading a book on history or studying it in class.

Most Koreans have inadequate knowledge and awareness of history, and historical dramas could be a solution to this on-going problem.

However, the downside is that during the process of making the drama, the directors might throw in too much false information, to make it more interesting and engaging. This can make the viewers become confused about the details of our history. An example of this is the drama ‘Gi Hwang Hu’. By distorting history to get a more captivating plot, ‘Gi Hwang Hu’ had brought the distaste of many viewers. However, despite the negative views of the audience, ‘Gi Hwang Hu’ had succeeded in terms of marketing and views. This added on to the problem because more and more people were exposed to misrepresented information.

This promise was blamed by the other candidates and made No hong-cheol the least welcomed potential leader among the members. People can have good laughs watching the show because it is just a comedy show and it is meant to be funny. 2013-14 England Premier League (EPL) was over in May 11th of the end of the last 38th games. The trophy was given to Manchester City which gained 86 points(27wins,5 draws and 6 losses) and 18th place; Norwich City FC, 19th; Fulham, FC and the very bottom of Cardiff City FC suffered the humiliation of demotion. In a table, it is possible to see the fall of last year's EPL champion, Manchester United. Though it ranked 7th and barely got a ticket for an entry to the UEFA Europa League in this season, it was evidence of slump which is quite different from brilliant reputation of 13 league titles since the Premier League was established(1992-93 season). The majority of M. U. fans claimed that the reason for the downfall this season was David Moyes, the general manager of M. With the opening ceremony on 12th June, the Brazil World Cup began. As the world cup is held in Brazil, whose people are mad about football, more people concentrated on the big event.

Brazil, the host country, is not doing so well as predicted. Of course it advanced to the semifinals but the results of each game are not satisfying nor fit for its reputation to make things worse, Neymar who has played the role as the troubleshooter got injured during the match with Columbia. Its next match-up partner is the European strong team, Germany, so all eyes will be on how many vacuums Brazil players will have.

This world cup made lots of rising stars, not the actual good players. Lots of players who couldn't be spotlighted themselves, covered behind the big stars shined themselves with glamorous plays. We only watch the side of their success, but there must be their desperate exertion on the other side.

The World Cup is the biggest festival in the world. Suitable for Brazil's enthusiastic atmosphere, this World Cup is enthusiastic and joyful. The next host country in the 2018 World cup is Russia. There are lots of worries whether or not there will be dumbfounded partial judgement like the Sotnicoba's precedent.

The 2014 Brazil World Cup is heating up the whole world. This World Cup shows more goals than the previous 20 years’ World Cups. However, many goals are not the biggest issue of this competition. It is the falling of Spain, the defending champion. They were defeated by the Netherlands, the runner-up of the last World Cup, and Chile, the dark horse of South America.

Spain has a fantastic squad, and the player list is almost same with the list of EURO 2012 so it was hard to anticipate their failing but now we can find some reason why they can’t go up to next round.

1. Slump of Iker Casillas Iker Casillas was the best goal keeper in the world but he hasn’t been able to show good performances since last year, and even can’t play many games because of injury and the rival keeper, Diego Lopez. However, Del Bosque, the director of Spain, used him as a starting member and it caused disaster. He allowed five goals by the Netherlands and two fatal goals by Chile. Experts said that they could understand

Digital Dementia is a new term referring the decline in cognitive function due to the excessive use of digital devices, especially smart phones. Byun Gi-won, a doctor at the Balance Brain Centre in Seoul, carried out a study to observe the impact of overusing smart phones on teenagers. He concluded that the young population in South Korea is heavily dependent on digital devices, which is interfering with the function of the brain and causing early symptoms of dementia. Also, the habit of frequently using smart phones disturbs the proper growth of the brain.

Third, overuse of smart phones can cause diseases and serious syndromes.

Xerophthalmia(dry eye syndrome), a herniated cervical(lumbar) disc, carpal tunnel syndrome, and even ADHD are the results of using smart phones excessively. It will allow you to sleep in the pleasant air without the interruption of the humidity. However, too little percentage of water in the air is not desirable for our health, so it is recommended to turn on a dehumidifier for only about 30 minutes right before you sleep.

The writer of this book is Lee So-Ra and she has been working as both a cartoonist and writer on her own blog.

Since she was completely crazy about psychology, she took the opportunity to make it her first cartoon book. Still, she did not major in art. The main purpose of the author's writing is to show that psychology is very close to ordinary people, and she mostly used vivid real-life examples to deal with the contents of this book.

This book consists of six parts, and in the first section, it contains learning psychology. We can learn many basic psychological terms and enjoy reading comic cartoons at the same time.

Next part is about economic psychology. This is the book review of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. In all of her books, there are very mixed feelings, because they are psychological thrillers! “Gone girl“ is obviously no exception to that. The main character is a man named Nick and he is currently living in Missouri with his wife, Amy. There is some tension between him and his wife. Their marriage doesn’t seem to be that great. One day, he notices that his wife, Amy, has gone missing. He gets suspected as the killer of Amy and he tries to prove his innocence. What made Amy leave? ......... The book is all about the relationship between them.

The structure of this book is very unique. Every chapter is between Amy and Nick. The first chapter begins with Nick and he is talking about what is going on in the present time from his point of view. The second chapter opens with the diary entry of Amy. The first half is boring because it is not that fast. Also, You may not really find it very interesting at first, because you don’t think that what Amy says in her diary is important to the novel but, in fact, it is! So remember that when you are reading the book, everything that Amy says in her diary entries is very important. It is almost like a treasure hunt.

When the truth behind Amy’s disappearance finally becomes clear, it will be a shock to readers. I recommend you read this book as soon as possible and enjoy these creepy feelings!

One day, while working late at the laboratory of OsCorp, Max has an accident which turns him into a human electric generator, and he soon begins to call himself the Electro. Later, thinking that Spider-Man has stolen the world’s attention from him, the Electro starts to hate Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Harry Osborn, who becomes the head of the OsCorp, moves to Manhattan.

He finds out that he has a disease which was inherited from his father, and believes that it can only be cured by spider’s blood. But when the Spider-Man rejects giving his blood to Harry, his hatred toward the Spider-Man starts to grow. Instead of getting the blood from Spider-Man, Harry finds out special spider blood from OsCorp and injects it into his body.

This turns Harry into the Green Goblin, and he proposes a deal with Electro to kill the SpiderMan together. Without knowing the danger that he will be facing, Peter Parker struggles to maintain the relationship with Gwen, who has informed him that she is moving to England.

After long thoughts, Peter makes a decision to follow Gwen to England.

Once everything seems to be perfect for Peter and Gwen, the Manhattan Island is once again attacked by Electro and the Green Goblin, and Peter leaves Gwen alone to fight against the villains.

Review It seems obvious that the Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a successful movie, especially in actions and for the concept of a new character. For the action scenes, which are full of vivid movements, scene changes, and threedimensional effects, the movie surely deserves to be recognized as the greatest action movie that has been created so far. Moreover, Sony Pictures (the maker of the movie) tried a different setting for the main character’s personal story, compared to the original Spider-Man series. The new Peter Parker has already gone through the stage of adjusting to the life of both a hero and an ordinary person, whereas the old Peter’s struggle in the original Spider-Man series remained focused only on getting used to his spacial power. These two features, the actions and the new setting, can be considered as the movie’s core ingredients which made it realistic and extreme.

However, there is also a major flaw to this movie. It tried to show too many things. Because the movie attempted to give overflowing information to the audience at the same time, it was not able to focus on a single theme, but drifted around from and to several different stories. They were not able to connect at the end of the movie. Of course, this is what kept the movie interesting for two and a half hour, but it also contributed greatly to making the audience lose track of all the distinct and separated items, eventually throwing them into confusion.

Still, considering the fact that it was able to create a smooth flow of the movie, even when consisted all themes such as actions, friendships, personal conflicts, and also, a tragic romance, the movie was very successful overall.

Even though it was somewhat distracted due to many scenes, the movie was still very successful on making the audience okay, affected and amazed, leaving them with anticipation for the next story of the Amazing SpiderMan.

Comment ★★★★☆ The movie was great and unique in how the story developed. It felt like this movie is “webbing” the Spider-Man stories of the past and the future together.

The“Edge of Tomorrow” means the second before a new day comes, that is, 11:59:59PM in clock. The storyline is closely attached to the concept of this time.

Major William Cage (played by Tom Cruise) is fighting against a race of aliens called ‘Mimics’. Since “Mimics’ have the power to reset time, which allows them to anticipate the future invasion of humans and dodge the human’s attacks, the aliens have taken over the Europe on continent. TRANSFORMERS: Age of Extinction Directed by Michael Bay and based on a novel Transformers

by Hasbro, and starring Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci The TRANSFORMERS series okay produced its fourth storyas amazing and as addictive as it ever was. The film takes place four years after the invasion of Chicago. This is the first film in the series to star whole new actors for the movie.

Returning Transformers are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, and Brains. The film is to be released on June 27th.

Many TRANSFORMERS-lovers have anticipated this movie.

Miss Lee’s cafe is located at 3 places Insadong, Myeongdong, and HyeHwa. Those three places are the heart of foreign tourism so we can guess Miss Lee’s cafe’s target demographic.

Not only Koreans, but also anyone who loves Korea and Korea food could enjoy themselves at this hot-place.

The Main concept of the cafe is ‘retrospection of days bygone’. Do si rak (Korean traditional lunch box) and patbingsu (shaved ice with sweetened red beans, ice cream and other toppings) are the most famous dishes in the cafe. The Do si rak consists of fried egg, slices of ham, fried kimchi, rice and red laver over the rice. To eat it, you have to shake it like a rattle.

Finally you can make a bibimbap and enjoy it. As a dessert, you can have an abundant patbingsu from a nickel-silver pot. Fresh fruits, such as tomatoes, kiwis, bananas and so on make people smile. Aromatic nuts and cereal causes time to fly.

On Wednesday, May 28th the Daeil Press went to Daehak-ro. It was a hot sunny day, and we wanted to eat something that would cool us down, so we went to ‘The Wicked Snow’. It was located in front of Seonggyungwan University, in the Yurim Hall, next to the Wedding Hall. It looked luxurious, yet simple and clean because of the black and white interior. Since it is a café specializing in ice flakes with syrup, there were a variety of items on the menu.

It had mango, chocolate, berry, milk, green tea, and so on. Our team had 7 people including the teacher, so we ordered three ice flakes.

The flavor we ate was chocolate, gold, and milk. This dishes were 8000won each. It felt a little expensive at first, but we soon realized that it was worth it. After about an hours, we got the signal from the vibration bell. It was different from a normal vibration bell. It looked like a cell phone, and on the screen the advertisement of ’The Wicked Snow’ came out. It was interesting. The flavor ‘chocolate’ was our favorite. The flavor ‘chocolate’ was covered with oreo cookies which added sweetness and crunchiness. The flavor ‘gold’ mainly consists of bean flour, red bean and injeolmi.

The flavor ‘milk’ was simple, just like standard ice flakes. Also, for desert, there were some soup, hotdogs, toast and ades. We chose plain toast for desert. It had ice cream on top of it. It was chewy, and delicious. The one thing that was regrettable was that we had some leftovers because we were too full to eat all of it. If we have a chance to go there again, I want to try some other flavors. I strongly recommend that you give a visit to ‘The Wicked Snow’ during the summer.

Atmosphere : ★★★★★ (5) The restaurant was spacious with good lighting, ideal for taking pictures. It was clean and pleasant and it was a good place for having a chat with friends.

Taste : ★★★★ (4) The cheese was stuck to the bottom of the pan, even though we stirred it furiously. So it was hard to enjoy the taste of cheese Tteokbokki. The cream Tteok-bokki was not too impressive - somewhat bland.

Overall : ★★★★ (4) I was happy with the service and the variety of their menu. If you are up for fusion Tteok-bokki at a low price, Koyako worth visiting.

'The Jincook' is one of the most popular restaurants in HyeHwa. It is very well known among college students. 'The Jincook' is famous for Rice soup with boiled beef. It has various dishes, not only Rice soup, like but also Korean cold noodle and sundae. None of the prices too high, ranging from 6000 to 10000 won on average.

This restaurant specializes in Rice soup and meat dishes. We ordered four cold buckwheat noodles and one spicy buckwheat noodle, one of their famous dishes, and it was served with some meat. Meat broth in the cold buckwheat noodle was sweet and cool and the meat melted in my mouth. The Spicy buckwheat noodle's seasoning was very hot in and itself, but not that spicy after adding some meat broth to it. Actually, it was kind of savory.

Inside the restaurant was cool, unlike the weather outside. However the TV animation sound was distracting. Moreover, it was not time for dinner, and we couldn't get enough information about the dishes. Other than that, 'The Jincook' is the best restaurant. If you are looking for cheap and delicious food, go visit 'The Jincook'.

Koyako is not the most popular restaurant in HyeHwa but very well known among students. Koyako is a fusion Tteok-bokki restaurant which has a wide range of dishes. There are cheese, seafood, sunade, dudae, bulgogi, jajang and cream tteok-bokki for you to choose, from all priced no more than 4,000 won each. Unlike other Tteok-bokki restaurants, they serve Tteok-bokki in various sauces so that people of different ages or of races can enjoy.

The Owner's recommendations were cheese and cream, which are the best sellers. We can also add ramen and dumplings if we would like.

These ultraviolet rays are unnoticeable, but they can be detrimental if they reach directly to your naked eyes. So, that is why we need sunglasses; to block at least ninety-nine percent of the lights.

The spread of this revolutionary equipment started in the United States. In the 1930s, pilots in the aviation army had difficulties with glasses. The glasses they had were not strong enough to block the deadly sunlight so that the pilots got emesis and dizziness.

Then, John macgready, an American army first lieutenant, requested to make protective goggles from Bausch &Lomb, an optical instrument company with a 140-year-old tradition. And in 1936 the lenses were made by the company, which were developed into sunglasses which we now call ‘aviator’.

However, America is not the starting point of the very first sunglasses started in Asia, China. Franca, who wrote <Eye Were> about old glasses and the history of sunglasses, had claimed that the Chinese used these sunglasses to cover their face when they interrogated criminals.

Another interesting fact about sunglasses is that the color coated lenses is relevant with the quantity of UV lights the lenses transmit.

Thus, Lee Chang-ho argued that what teenagers want to solve the addiction problem is the alleviation of a harsh education only for entering a good university, and promotion of a free environment for teenagers.

In February 26th, 2014, a debate about game addiction was held in the National Assembly's Member's Hall.

The debate was sponsored by Son Inchun of the Saenuri-party. The debate's subject was "Internet and game addiction problem - What can be the solution?"

Before this debate, Son In-chun proposed a law for regulating games.

Therefore, the game industry is a stakeholder in this debate. The game industry was concerned that today's debate could just put the emphasis on the 'game industry's responsibility'.

Actually, the last debate which was held by Son In-chun was criticized because that debate only mentioned the responsibility of the game industry.

However, this debate concluded that the cause of Internet and game addiction is from 'education and exam hell'. It also concluded that parents should take an interest how children actually use the games. This debate,

therefore, was well appreciated because it was different from other debates whose subject was the regulation of games.

Panel Lee Chang-ho, Korea Teenager Policy Research member, mentioned that teenagers recognize education only as a means to enter a good university makes teenagers study for the whole day as the main reason for game addiction, according to the survey. The survey was taken to middle school and high school's girl and boy students, and the subject was 'Internet and game addiction's cause from teenager's perspective'. 'Education for entering a good university' got the highest score for the cause of addiction, and on the other hand, 'lack of the game industry's responsibility' got the lowest score.

This survey also showed that teenagers think 'other healthy leisure activities' and 'changing the education system' could be solutions for addiction.

Nowadays, people only think that the regulation of games could be a solution for game addiction. However, according to this debate, it is time to re-examine the Korean social structure that causes teenagers be come immersed in games.

To solve the Internet and game addiction problem within the whole society, first, the government should take responsibility to change the social structure. The Ministry of Education should actively improve the current education system that only creates exam hell. Second, healthy other leisure activities which every children could join together in should be assured.

Third, the Family's responsibility is also important - parents should observe their children's game playing and take care of them.

The game industry and experts assess this debate as a progressive debate.

It didn't shift responsibility for game addiction only to the game industry.

It dealt with the fundamental social structure as the real cause of teenager's addiction to the Internet and games, and this point made this debate progressive.

Making another person’s day delightful isn’t that difficult.

From now on, I would like to show five easy ways to brighten up someone’s face and instantly make their day better.

There is a well-known proverb “No one spits on a smiling face”. It might be right since smiling can make everyone happy and not irritated. Smiling or grinning is a simple gesture, but it can show that you are glad to see them.

Furthermore, your simple grinning can help them forget their bad memories during the day.

2. Hold the door for someone.

When you go to public places, there are many polite people who hold the door for you, even though they don’t know you. However, five short seconds when somebody holds the door for you can make you very thankful. You will look at the person’s eyes once more and you will feel empathy from them. This small communication can make you very happy.

3. Volunteer Many people think that volunteering is difficult and is a huge thing. In fact, if you spend at least one hour for others, you can experience real satisfaction from a small good deed. Thus volunteering can affect not only someone’s happiness but our happiness as well.

4. Give some flowers You may think that people only give flowers to somebody when they propose to someone, like when boys give flowers to girls.

Like this, giving flowers is considered an attentive action and these aesthetic presents will make people happier and more productive.

5. Compliment It’s one of the easiest ways to make another person feel good. However, it must be sincere and genuine. Then, this will bring a positive effect and make people productive since a compliment has the same function as a reward or a prayer.

A candidate for Prime Minister, Moon Chang Keuk, delivered a highly controversial speech. In 2011 and 2012, he gave a special lecture in a church in Seoul in the capacity of a elder.

He was interested in modern and contemporary history but regretfully he talked about his own controversial views.

He said, “The colonization of Japan was a sign from God.” In addition, he emphasized that the division of Korea was a sign from God. Candidate Moon said “We can think inwardly about why God made a colony of Japan. However, it all posesses some meaning. God said to us that we are people who spent 500 years in vain and we should undergo an ordeal. As a result, God divided our country. Now that I think of it, it is a gift.” He is even called the ethnicity of Korea into question. He said, “The symbol of Korean people is laziness. The Laziness, a lack of sense of independence and an acceptance of a favor from others remains in DNA of our peoples.”

Many people who have heard or seen this news are very annoyed and at a loss for words. They have criticized his statement and insisted that he needs to apologize about this problem. Meanwhile, he said that the liberation of Korea was due to God and it was an easy job for Korea because the United States won Japan. Furthermore, he suggested that Jeju 4·3 democratic contention was a riot and he supported Yun Chi Ho who was in the pro-Japanese group.

What is most debatable is that his statement which was said in front of his house on June 12th. He answered the questions of reporters that asked him whether he had an intention to apologize or not. However, he spoke his mind adamantly that he didn’t intend to apologize and didn’t understand why he had to apologize. Meanwhile, the present Prime Minister, Jeong Hong Won, defended Moon Chang Keuk. He said, “To evaluate a person for a few words is an heard of in a democratic society. I just want the real intention of his words to be found out as soon as possible at a hearing.

Losing Weight May Require Some Serious Fun

The researchers recruited 56 healthy adult women, the majority of them were overweight. The women were given maps of a one mile outdoor course and told that they would spend the next half hour walking there, with lunch to follow. Half of the women were told that their walk was meant for exercise and they were encouraged to keep that mind , monitoring their exertion throughout.

The other women were told that their 30 minute outing would be a walking purely for pleasure( they would be listening to music through headphones and rating the sound quality, but mostly researchers wanted them to enjoy themselves) When the women returned from walking, the researchers asked each to estimate their mileage, mood and the calorie expenditure. Those women who had been formally exercising reported feeling more fatigued than the other women, although the two groups’ estimated of mileage were almost identical. More telling, when the women sat down to a pasta lunch with water or chocolate pudding for dessert, the women in the exercise group loaded up on the soda and pudding, consumed significantly more calories than the women who had thought they walked as a pleasure.

In swim, the above experiment shows that how we frame physical activity affects how we eat afterward. The same exertion, spun as fun instead of exercise, prompts less gorging on high calorie food. also our attitudes toward exercise are malleable.
