RETENTION MATTERS Retention Matters—use the right tools Tag retention starts with proper application. Each manufacturer designs its tags and applicators as a matched set, working like a key and lock—only the correct combination ensures proper function. A bent applicator pin will misalign with the stud tip, while an incorrect pin diameter can also cause issues: too small, and the stud may fall off; too large, and it may not release properly, increasing the risk of ear tearing.

PIN COMPARISON • All pins are different. Use the pin for the applicator it was made for.

• Differences can be found in length, diameter, tip and attachment design.

PROPER PAIRING AND FIT • Stud base is flush with base of the applicator pin for support.

• Applicator pin tip seated in stud tip for optimal application of force to penetrate the ear and not exit out the side of the shaft.

PIN DOESN’T FIT STUD TIP • Applicator pin is not seated into the base of the stud. Stud will be unstable and/or fall off the pin.

• Applicator pin is not seated into the tip of the tag. The pin will slip off and protrude through the shaft of the stud and the male-female portions will fail to lock.

New $7.2M Research Investment Targets Real-World Solutions for SK Beef Producers Kori Maki-Adair

Beef producers across Saskatchewan will see direct benefits from a major $7.2 million investment in livestock and forage research this year. The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are partnering with industry to fund 30 research projects aimed at improving herd health, forage productivity, and long-term sustainability on the ground.

The investment includes $6.9 million in government funding through the Agriculture Development Fund (ADF), with another $216,000 contributed by industry groups. Delivered under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), this year’s funding is part of Saskatchewan’s broader $37 million budget for agriculture research in 2024–25.

Research That Works for Producers The research priorities reflect the day-today challenges and opportunities faced by beef producers. Funded projects include studies to improve vaccine effectiveness in feeder calves through mineral supplementation, develop new vaccines and treatments for livestock diseases, and manage woody plant encroachment in pastures using fire and targeted herbicide applications.

“Innovation is the key to staying competitive,” said Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison.

“Through strategic research support, we’re helping Saskatchewan’s livestock producers keep doing what they do best while moving the industry forward.”

Federal Minister of Agriculture Lawrence MacAulay echoed that sentiment, “Our shared investment with the Government of Saskatchewan in these Agriculture Development Fund research projects will help create growth and make sure our great sector remains on the cutting edge.”

SK Ag Budget: Strong Support, but Beef Producers Need a Fair Share Kori Maki-Adair

There’s good news for Saskatchewan’s ag community this year: the province’s 2025-26 budget is putting a record $625 million into agriculture. That’s up over $54 million from last year–and it’s a strong signal that the government is backing farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses through the ups and downs.

“With this budget, we’re making sure producers have the support they need today, while also investing in the future of the industry,” said Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison. “Saskatchewan’s producers are some of the best in the world, and we’re proud to help them meet growing global demand for high-quality, sustainably produced food.”

A significant portion of that funding—$483.8 million—will go toward business risk management programs like Crop Insurance and AgriStability.

These programs are essential, offering producers a safety net when markets become volatile or weather conditions turn unfavourable.

However, while there is much to be appreciated in these investments, there is a growing concern among Saskatchewan’s beef producers.

“While it’s encouraging to see increased investment in crop insurance, it’s disappointing that the provincial budget did not include cost-sharing for the Livestock Price Insurance Program or the introduction of the Alberta AgriStability Pilot—an initiative specifically designed to address long-standing gaps for cow-calf producers, particularly around feed costs and inventory pricing during drought,” said Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association President Jeff Yorga.

Since 2012, annual value-added agriculture revenue has more than doubled—from $3.5 billion to nearly eight billion dollars. This is real, sustainable growth, helping to drive the province’s economy forward.

“Progress on satellite-based rainfall insurance has also been slow. Overall, the budget signals strong support for the grain sector, but once again, beef producers appear to have been left behind.”

In addition, $89.4 million is being directed toward initiatives that will build competitiveness, drive innovation, and strengthen the ag sector overall.

This includes funding for research into pest and disease threats, farm safety programs, and mentorship opportunities to help bring the next generation into the industry.

“It’s difficult to feel reassured about the provincial government’s commitment to balanced business risk management support across all sectors. We respectfully urge the government to reaffirm its relationship with the beef sector and demonstrate that partnership through action. We are ready and willing to come to the table and work together toward long-term solutions that support prosperity for the entire agriculture industry,” Yorga added.

Support That Hits Close to Home

On Track for a Strong Future

For cattle producers, research support is a notable highlight. The province is investing $37 million in ag research this year, with over $166 million allocated over the past five years for livestock and crop research, new technologies, and positions at research centres.

Saskatchewan is still working toward its long-term goals, and the Growth Plan aims to increase value-added ag revenue to $10 billion and crop production to 45 million metric tonnes by 2030. The province is making solid progress—last year, crop production hit 35.5 million

Down the Line While Saskatchewan’s beef producers are appreciative of the investments made in the 2025-26 budget, they are calling for more fairness and balance. The budget’s strong support for the grain sector is evident, but it falls short in addressing the unique challenges facing the beef industry, particularly in areas like drought response, feed costs, and market volatility.

Now is the time for the government to reaffirm its commitment to the beef sector.

“We are ready to talk, ready to collaborate, and ready to work toward practical, long-term solutions that support shared prosperity across the entire agriculture industry. The 2025 Canadian federal election has concluded, and the results are in.

The Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, secured a minority government with 169 seats, falling short of a majority but outperforming expectations.

It Was a Regular Cow: Status of the Bovine TB Investigation Kori Maki-Adair

Rural Saskatchewan, Fall 2024 It started like any other day. A rancher from central Saskatchewan loaded a group of finished cattle for transport to a federally-inspected abattoir in Alberta.

One of the cows, a quiet six-year-old, showed no outward signs of illness. It was a regular animal in a good-looking herd.

But several weeks later, a call came in— something most producers hope never to hear. Perhaps, it went like this: “We’ve detected tuberculosis-like lesions in one of your cows. Canadian Food Inspection Agency is launching a full investigation.”

And just like that, the cow that had seemed perfectly healthy became the first confirmed case in a new outbreak of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in Saskatchewan.

A Silent Disease With Deep Roots Bovine TB is not new to Canada–but it’s rare, thanks to decades of rigorous testing, surveillance, and cooperation from ranchers. Caused by Mycobacterium bovis, the disease can lie dormant for years. An animal may appear healthy while harbouring bacteria deep in its lungs or lymph nodes.

When disease does progress, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) website indicates it can look like: • • • •

A persistent, hacking cough; Weight loss or poor condition; Fever that comes and goes; and Swollen lymph nodes.

It is important to note, in most cases in Canada, it is not discovered in the pasture or barns; rather, it’s revealed on the processing line, during postmortem inspection.

Canada’s CFIA surveillance system plays a key role in early TB detection. Most cases of bovine TB are found at abattoirs, where inspectors examine the lymph

nodes and lungs of slaughtered animals for any lesions that may indicate disease.

On-farm signs of TB are rare because the disease often develops slowly, without visible symptoms, until it has progressed.

How It Spreads: Invisible Threads Between Herds The bacteria can be shed in respiratory droplets, feces, milk, or even reproductive secretions. Infected wildlife–like deer, elk, or wild boars–can transmit it to cattle, especially when sharing feed or water sources. The risk increases with: • • •

Buying cattle without knowing their full health history; Housing animals in close confinement; and Grazing in regions where wildlife reservoirs may exist.

One infected animal can pass it quietly through a herd, unnoticed, until slaughter reveals the story.

What About People?

Though rare, bovine TB can infect humans through unpasteurized milk, direct contact with infected animals (especially through cuts or wounds), or by breathing in aerosols in close quarters.

Thanks to Canada’s food safety system, the general public is safe. However, people working closely with cattle–ranchers, vets, handlers–should take care, and seek medical advice if exposed.

Status of the bovine tuberculosis investigation (2024) The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation and testing following a November 29, 2024, case of bovine tuberculosis (bovine TB) has detected the disease in the herd where the infected animal spent most of its life before slaughter.

The herd has been declared infected and will be humanely depopulated.

The CFIA disease investigation is ongoing.

Investigation status as of March 13, 2025 The depopulation of the infected herds is in progress. Reactor animals identified during live animal testing will be slaughtered first for post-mortem inspection and laboratory testing.

While the process can be long and challenging for producers, everyone– from the farm to those holding plates– should show their appreciation to these producers for their efforts that are contributing to the broader goal of preventing further spread of the disease and protecting other herds across Canada.

Compensation and Support The federal government compensates producers for animals ordered destroyed under the Health of Animals Act. Additional support is available through programs like AgriInvest, AgriStability, and provincial mental health and financial support programs.

Saskatchewan’s 2024-25 Outbreak The case that surfaced last fall turned out to involve a new strain of bovine TB, never before identified in Canada.

This discovery set off a province-wide trace-out, as CFIA worked to ensure no further spread. The infected herd was depopulated, and nearby producers were quickly notified and tested.

U.S. Beef Grading Changes Could Influence Canadian Market Access and Standards Kori Maki-Adair

Recent developments in the United States beef grading system, including new technologies and updated marbling standards, are expected to influence Canada’s beef industry, particularly given the close integration of North American beef production and trade.

With growing exports and cross-border processing between Canada and the U.S., Saskatchewan beef producers should be aware of these changes and consider their potential effects on grading alignment, labeling, and long-term market access.

Tech Advances Reshape U.S. Beef Grading

(USDA) has significantly expanded its use of instrument grading technologies, now assisting in the grading of approximately 60 per cent of U.S. beef carcasses. These systems are designed to improve grading efficiency and enhance consistency, especially in identifying high-marbling carcasses often associated with premium quality grades like USDA Prime.

Automated vision systems and machine learning tools allow more objective evaluation of ribeye marbling, ribeye size, and fat thickness. These enhancements are expected to set a new standard for grading reliability, reducing variation between plants and graders.

Updated Marbling Standards Reflect Genetic Gains The USDA has also improved its marbling reference images to assess carcasses from breeds with naturally higher marbling, such as Wagyu and high-marbling Angus lines. These updated standards aim to reflect genetic progress in cattle and to ensure carcasses with exceptional marbling are appropriately recognized in premium grade categories.

This shift recognizes the evolving genetic potential of cattle and may influence how marbling is judged and rewarded in competitive export markets, including those that Canadian producers supply.

Grading Alignment and Trade Compatibility Historically, Canada has aligned its beef grading system closely with the USDA to support trade compatibility. The Canadian Beef Grading Agency (CBGA), which oversees domestic grading standards, ensures fair and consistent evaluation of beef carcasses. Stock GrowHer: Michelle Pearson Carried on after the Loss of Her Husband Jeff Gaye

Michelle Pearson operates the historic Tie Rail Ranch near Ravenscrag along the Frenchman River. She and her husband Tom ran the ranch together until his sudden passing in 2016.

After Tom died, Michelle stepped up and took over.

She had always been involved in the ranch, but finding herself on her own raised obstacles and learning curves that had to be overcome.

The help of good neighbours and friends, and especially her father, pushed her through. Her father, she said, “was probably the only one that did not say I couldn’t do it. Everybody else told me I couldn’t do it, so he kind of had my back. I guess he tried to teach me 80 years of farming in about six or seven years.”

Her determination, persistence, and love of ranching gave her the tools to run a successful operation. As her two boys (aged 8 and 11 at the time of their father’s death) got older, they became increasingly involved in helping with the ranch work.

Michelle reluctantly acknowledges that she often gets compliments on her ability to keep things going. “Without sounding too vain, I do have people commending me on my efforts and wondering how I do it all,” she said.

“It does get overwhelming.”

She is outside every day doing whatever needs to be done—haying, feeding cattle, calving, mechanical work, wiring, as well as maintaining the ranch’s books. She is passionate and takes tremendous pride in Tie Rail’s Red Angus herd.

Tom had selected genetics and used artificial insemination to improve the herd. Michelle says she still doesn’t really know how to do that; so, she puts a lot of time and research into the bulls she wants. She keeps meticulous records of her cattle, and she has been selling bred replacement heifers at the annual Money in the Bank heifer sale in Maple Creek.

“It is clear why Michelle deserves to be recognized and celebrated as a remarkable woman in the agriculture industry today!” they wrote. “ Her business acumen, relentless work ethic and resilience in the face of every challenge proves that she is a role model, not only for her sons, but for other females in the ranching business.”

Ranching families are getting recognized more and more as partnerships, and women are earning respect for being ranchers in their own right as opposed to being the rancher’s wife. Each operation may divide the roles differently between the partners, but in a family operation, it takes everyone to get the work done.

Michelle says when Tom died, she understood the ranch, but didn’t know everything she needed to know.

“No matter how involved you are as a female in an operation, you can never be too involved,” she said. “In my scenario, I think I operated in a haze for two years.”

But her knowledge of the operation and the industry— on paper, at least—gave her a bit of a head start.

“I was kind of at an advantage because we were involved in AgriStability and Verified Beef Production programs. I am a bookkeeper as well, which gave me a lot of information on paper that probably a lot of these guys just keep in their heads.

“And I was probably at an advantage because I pumped my husband for information so much in prior years.

‘How much seed did you use? How many pounds of fertilizer?’ You know, just everything like that,” she said.

Women may be underappreciated on family operations, but Michelle says both sides of a ranching partnership are important to making it work. She recognizes her own success, and she’s proud of what she has accomplished, but she also knows she had help.

She also had to scale back the operation after Tom died.

“When my husband was alive, we had a bigger operation. We did it a bit different than I do now. When he passed away, I lost about 11 quarters of grazing; so, I had to sell 100 cows.

“I had to decide whether to keep trying or to go,” Michelle said. “And my decision was I can do this―I can somehow pull this off; so, the kids have a choice in the future.

“So yeah, I plugged through. I have, in my opinion, improved the operation; but, probably not as much as my husband and I would have both improved it together.”

She absolutely loves the land around Ravenscrag. She used to take landscape photos of the surroundings, and she remembers asking Tom once if he often stopped to appreciate the natural beauty.

“It’s home,” was all he said—maybe slightly dismissive of the scenery, but on the other hand, a profound compliment to the place.

As with most ranchers, it’s hard to know if the land and the hard work exist to raise cattle, or if beef production serves as justification for living the life they love.

Michelle says her own measure of success has changed.

“Yes we are proud of the cattle, and that we have managed without additional debt through the droughts and prices,” she says. “But when people go out of their way to tell me what great young men I’ve raised with a good work ethic, good manners, et cetera—well, that is when I know this ranch has really served its purpose.”

Asked to reflect on the role of women in ranching, Michelle tells a story about when her husband asked her father how long he would keep working.

“Tom said. ‘Alfred, when are you going to retire?’” she said. “And my father looked over at my mother and he goes, ‘well, I guess when she quits, I quit.’ And that says it all, right?”

And so, Michelle knows full well the challenges of running a partnership operation without a partner. It has been difficult and it has been gratifying. She says she is satisfied that even if she and the boys had to move off the ranch, she has done her job.

Reflecting on ranch life, she says people do what has to be done—because it has to be done.

“There was a message written in one of the sympathy cards that I got from a local widow that I knew since I was really young. It said something along the lines that you will have to reach inside yourself and find strength that you don’t have. And that pretty much sums it up.”B

FMD in Focus: Understanding the Threat and Our Collective Response Kori Maki-Adair

For most, it is calving season. Our herds are healthy, the market looks promising, and everything feels just right. Then one of us notices a cow limping. She’s drooling. A closer look reveals blisters on her mouth, teats and feet. The vet pays a visit and the words we hoped we would never hear are spoken: Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

It might feel like a problem from faraway places, but the truth is, the threat is a lot closer than most of us think. Canada is currently FMD-free, but it doesn’t take much—a contaminated boot, a forgotten sandwich, or a careless traveller—to change that overnight.

This article is your quick start guide to understanding Foot-and-Mouth Disease: what it is, how it spreads, why it matters, and how we can all be part of the solution.

Consider it an important step in staying one step ahead of it.

To ensure the information in this article is current, relevant, and accurate, we consulted Afolakemi Adeniji—an internationally-trained veterinarian with a master’s in Population Medicine (Epidemiology with a focus on applied clinical research), hands-on experience in animal disease management and public health, and direct experience working with FMD in an endemic country—for her expert review of this article and her insights.

What is FMD? FMD is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals and camelids, encompassing a wide-range of both domestic and wild species, such as cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, bison, deer, elk, moose, caribou, musk ox, wild boar and antelope. The susceptibility of these species varies, with some being highly susceptible and others showing limited susceptibility like llamas and alpacas.

It causes blisters and lesions on the feet,

mouth, and teats, leading to drooling, lameness, fever, and severe production losses. It causes sudden death in young animals and, while it isn’t a food safety or public health concern, the economic and trade consequences are devastating.

Canada, which holds an FMD-free without vaccination trade status, has not experienced an outbreak of FMD since 1952, when the last case was reported in Saskatchewan. The 1952 outbreak involved the infection of several cattle herds, prompting swift government action including the cull of more than 1,600 animals, strict quarantines, and movement controls. The disease was eradicated within months, but it highlighted the devastating potential of FMD in a livestock-dependent economy.

To support emergency preparedness and protect its disease-free status, the Government of Canada has invested in an FMD vaccine bank. In addition, Canada maintains a stockpile of vaccines through the North American FMD Vaccine Bank, offering a powerful tool to help suppress outbreaks quickly and avoid mass depopulations.

Despite these precautions, according to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), an FMD outbreak would severely impact Canada’s ability to export animals and meat and animal products to other markets and could result in an estimated economic impact ranging from $19.4 billion to $65.2 billion.

Most of the Americas, including Canada, are FMD-free. However, that does not mean we are immune. As of April 27, 2025, parts of Europe—including Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria—have been grappling with outbreaks.

These developments are a sobering reminder: even modern, well-resourced countries are not safe from the virus. As Adeniji reflected, “In the field, I saw the

As of April 27, 2025, several European countries are managing recent outbreaks of FMD, with varying levels of containment and ongoing concerns.

Here’s the latest snapshot: Germany Status: Declared free of FMD. Details: Germany reported its first FMD outbreak in nearly 40 years on January 10, 2025, affecting a herd of water buffalo near Berlin. By mid-March, most of the country had regained its disease-free status, excluding the original containment zone. WOAH officially declared

Germany free of FMD on April 15, 2025.

Consequently, Britain lifted its ban on German livestock and animal product imports.

Hungary Status: Outbreaks reported; restrictions remain in place.

Details: Hungary confirmed its first FMD case in over 50 years on March 7, 2025, in a dairy farm near Kisbajcs, close to the Slovak border. A second case was reported on March 26. Authorities culled thousands of cattle and implemented border closures and disinfection measures. While no new infections have been reported recently, the cleanup of affected farms is ongoing.

Slovakia Status: State of emergency declared; containment efforts underway.

Details: Slovakia’s first FMD outbreak since 1973 was confirmed on March 21, 2025, in the Dunajská Streda district, near the Hungarian border. A fourth case was reported on March 25, 2025.

The government declared a state of emergency, culling affected livestock and implementing stringent biosecurity measures. Authorities suspect various vectors, including wind and contaminated surfaces, may have facilitated transmission.

Austria Status: Reported cases; border measures in effect.

Details: Austria has reported FMD cases and responded by closing 24 small border crossings with Hungary and Slovakia to prevent the spread of the disease into the country. The UK has imposed import bans on Austrian live cattle, fresh meat and dairy products.

United Kingdom Status: Import restrictions enforced.

Details: In response to the European outbreaks, the UK has prohibited travellers from bringing meat and dairy products from EU countries into Great Britain.

This includes items such as sandwiches, cheese, cured and raw meats, and milk, regardless of packaging or purchase location.

These developments are a sobering reminder: even modern, well-resourced countries are not safe from the virus.

Why It Matters Here at Home An outbreak in Canada would be catastrophic. Think back to the 2003 BSE crisis—now multiply that in scale and complexity. As mentioned, experts estimate the economic fallout could range from $19.4 billion to more than $65 billion.

Export markets would slam shut.

Livestock movement would be frozen.

Rural communities could suffer for years.

The good news: Canada has a solid plan, and it includes Saskatchewan producers.

Know the Signs–Act Fast Early detection is key. Here’s what to watch for: • • • •

Fever, depression Lack of appetite Excessive drooling Blisters and lesions on the mouth, teats, or feet • Lameness, reluctance to move, and obvious pain • Sudden drop in milk production • Potential abortion in neonates If you spot these signs—don’t wait.

Call your veterinarian. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) can confirm or rule out FMD through lab testing.

Reporting early can be the difference between a localized case and a national emergency.

But as Adeniji pointed out, early detection is only part of the solution. “Witnessing how rapidly FMD can sweep through a herd reminded me that early detection is only part of the equation,” she said.

“Biosecurity measures like quarantine and good hygiene are what truly stop the spread.”

Biosecurity: The First Line of Defence Biosecurity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the invisible shield that keeps your herd safe.

FMD is tough. It survives on boots, tires, feed bags, and even in the air over short distances.

Smart prevention starts with simple steps: • Quarantine new or returning animals to prevent disease introduction.

As Adeniji emphasized, “There’s no such thing as a small biosecurity measure.

From using a footbath to changing your boots, every step counts in preventing the spread of disease. Good biosecurity is everyday practice.”

She also underscored the importance of teamwork: “Strong biosecurity relies on strong communication. When producers and vets work closely and share information, biosecurity measures are

U.S. Allies, Diversified Markets Might Take the Sting Out of Tariff Threats Jeff Gaye

Like everyone else, the North American beef sector has a watchful eye on global trade issues stemming from the U.S.’s ever-changing tariff regime.

Canadian beef exports to United States were subject to two days of tariffs in February before President Donald Trump announced a pause for those exports that complied with the Canada—United States—Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

The threat of new tariffs remains, says Canadian Cattle Association Executive Vice-President Dennis Laycraft, but he is optimistic the beef industry can protect itself.

Trump had imposed comprehensive tariffs on exports to the U.S. to address that country’s trade deficits with many countries, including Canada. But the U.S. trade deficit with Canada is driven by their appetite for our energy. Laycraft says on agri-food products, the Americans come out very well.

“The thing that gets forgotten when people start to use this sort of zero-sum trade policy—that our value of imports should equal our value of exports—is that’s not how natural comparative advantage operates,” Laycraft said.

“An interesting measurement we’ve done some analysis on is just taking a look at per-capita purchases of U.S. agri-food products. And here in Canada in 2024, what we imported works out to $710 U.S. per capita. In other words, each one of us bought $710 worth of U.S. agri-food products,” he said.

“We export about $114 worth, per capita, to the U.S.” In many years, Canada is the largest purchaser of American agri-food products.

on a per-capita basis, Canadians are the U.S. agri-food sector’s best customers.

“China imports about $17 per capita, Mexico about $231, and Canada $710.

“We actually are more competitive as we’re moving animals around, dealing with climate related issues. That has actually helped keep capacity in Canada, and the U.S. in particular, moving through periods of significant drought.”

The North American industry as a whole is built on integrated markets. This is as true for processing capacity on both sides of the border as it is for producers of cattle and feed crops.

Allies in the U.S. are working through public hearings and talking publicly through the media to advocate for the industry, Laycraft says. There are also efforts going on behind the scenes.

Lobbying on the specific issue of tariffs is one part of a more comprehensive approach to international trade in beef, but it doesn’t represent the whole picture.

There are trade irritants the Americans have with other countries, and NCBA efforts to have the government address these reinforce the value—to the U.S.— of the integrated North American beef market.

“There are other aspects to what the new administration is doing that are beneficial,” Laycraft said. “It isn’t just having to be caught in the tariff piece.

“There is some reduction in regulatory burden and even on the trade file. When continued on page 28

Guarded Optimism cont. from pg. 27 you read the America First document and see the comments that the NCBA put in, they talked quite favourably about the North American market, but identified some real issues with a number of countries around the world that still either have some non-science-based Secure Beef Supply requirements that are interfering with trade, or there are still some tariffs that exist.

“If you were to take our list of concerns with countries, it overlays almost exactly with the issues that the NCBA have identified,” Laycraft continued. “We see the opportunity to work with the United States as we address some of these third country issues that have been problematic in terms of beef trade around the world.”

In the meantime, Laycraft says Canada is looking to diversify its beef export opportunities. He says the higher value of certain cuts in some Asian markets opens up possibilities there while adding value to those same products at home.

“We’ve worked very closely with Canada Beef and we’ve seen excellent growth in our exports to Japan in particular, following the CPTPP [Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership],” he said.

He expects similar growth in Korea after 2030, when an eight-per-cent tariff differential compared to the U.S. expires.

He says Europe is where Canada is expecting to see tremendous growth that will help keep beef at the top of our country’s agriculture exports. Some tariff stability could go a long way to expanding our production, which would enable the Canadian industry to take advantage of more opportunities.

“We’re going to see the importance of diversification,” Laycraft said. He recalled visiting a Costco store on the outskirts of Tokyo 18 months ago and seeing USDAinspected beef tongue in the meat case next to USDA Choice strip loin. Both were cut for barbecues.

The tongue was selling at a higher price than the strip loins.

Chuck rolls, to be thinly sliced in a shabu-shabu preparation, are also popular.

“It’s a huge market where there’s more money to sell your chuck rolls, your short plates, your short ribs, your tongues, quite often your skirt meat,” Laycraft said. “They’ll command a higher price in Japan than they will in Canada or the United States, so it actually distributes more value evenly through the carcass.”

cuts at home, which in turn results in better prices.

“If you go to a grocery store and you look at what short ribs are selling for, they’re selling at a pretty good price. And they’re selling at that price because there’s such strong demand from Asia,” Laycraft said.

“So diversification actually can work very well with an integrated North American market. We’re stronger together.”

Of course the Canadian beef sector sees the benefits of integration, and the American sector sees them as well. Does the U.S. administration understand the integrated North American beef industry’s place in global trade?

Laycraft says it’s worth being cautiously optimistic.

“There’s one message that kind of gets lost in the advertising these days. We still have many really good business associates and really good friends in the United States. That relationship still exists,” he said.

“There are obviously challenges right now with the new administration, but we still have a very strong and positive neighbour when we travel there.”

The strength of that relationship bodes well for the Canadian and U.S. governments to recognize their aligned interests in new CUSMA negotiations, whenever they begin.

“These things always work their way through. We need to be thinking past what the immediate issues are to where we want to be. I truly believe we can get things back on a more normal basis.”

The Trump administration will be assembling its negotiating team and its strategies, while Canada’s new government has to get a new cabinet into place. Nonetheless, Laycraft thinks negotiations can start relatively quickly.

“I wouldn’t be surprised that we aren’t into negotiations by as early as this fall,” he said. B

Canadian Ranchers Tackle Climate Challenges Head-On Kori Maki-Adair

In the heart of Canada’s ranching communities, the cattle are grazing, the sun is setting, and the challenges of climate change are becoming all too real.

A recent national survey commissioned

by Farmers for Climate Solutions (FCS) and conducted by Léger has shed light on the pressing concerns of Canadian farmers and ranchers. The 2024 poll, which surveyed 858 producers across the country, revealed that climate change is now considered the top challenge facing Canadian agriculture over the next decade.

The survey highlights that 76 per cent of respondents have already felt the impacts of severe weather events in the past five years. From unpredictable rainfall patterns to prolonged droughts, these changes are affecting crop yields, water availability, and the overall health of the land. For beef producers, this translates to challenges in pasture growth, water resources for livestock, and the availability of feed.

As the climate continues to evolve, Canadian ranchers are adapting with resilience and innovation. The survey indicates that almost 94 per cent of farmers and ranchers see improving soil health as a top priority, while 87 per cent prioritize enhancing on-farm resilience. In the face of climate challenges, Canada’s beef industry is not just surviving, it’s thriving, leading the way in sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. B

Despite these challenges, Canadian ranchers view themselves as stewards of the land. An impressive 86 per cent of farmers and ranchers consider themselves good environmental stewards, and 46 per cent feel they can do more to improve environmental outcomes on their operations. These sentiments are echoed by the Canadian Beef Industry’s 10-year goals, which emphasize greenhouse gas reduction, soil health, water quality, and innovation.

Chief Executive Officer Jason Pollock Livestock Services of Saskatchewan As we move through another calving season—where the challenges of weather, markets, and mud seem to keep pace with the joys of new life on the ground— I want to discuss some key points that continue to anchor our work in the cattle industry. Branding, documentation, risk management, and regulatory knowledge may not sound glamorous, but in today’s climate of high prices and high risk, they are more essential than ever.

A Hot Brand Still Holds Heat One of the oldest tools in our toolbox remains one of the most reliable: the livestock brand. It is more than a symbol— it is legal proof of ownership under Saskatchewan law. In fact, a hot brand is prima facie evidence of ownership, and in civil matters, that weight can be crucial​.

With more producers moving animals across pastures, provinces, and even into custom feeding arrangements, visible, registered brands remain your first line of defence in protecting your herd.

If you are one of the few not yet registered with an indelible mark of ownership for your high-priced critters, it is worth fixing.

Family transitions can be hectic.

Whether it is the death of a loved one or a retirement, there are lots of tasks that demand attention. One key item to consider is the named owner of the brand.

Inspection regulations demands payment to the brand unless otherwise authorized by the brand owner.

When a person who owns a brand passes away, the brand automatically transfers to the estate of the deceased. This can inadvertently tie up liquidity or cause other unintended consequences at an already stressful time.

Give some thought to whom your brand is registered and whether it is appropriate for your current or future operation.

Making changes to your brand is a relatively simple process while the named owners are alive, less so when the brand moves to the estate.

Good Paper Is Still Good Business I have said it before, and I will say it again—because I have seen too many tough situations unfold where good intentions were not backed by good documentation. Whether it is a handshake deal with a neighbour, a lease agreement with an absentee landowner, or a customgrazing contract, clear and complete paperwork protects everyone involved.

At LSS, we routinely assist in civil matters gone wrong—not because people set out to deceive, but because assumptions replaced accountability. Even the most basic of tools, like a livestock manifest, remains invaluable. It documents where

your cattle went, who hauled them, what brands or tags they carried, and who received them. We have literally picked up faded manifests out of truck dashes on windy days—don’t be that guy. File them, protect them, and use them as the essential record they are​.

We are also seeing an uptick in the complexity of documentation with the rise of digital tools and new federal reporting obligations. Enter MyLivestock–a digital manifest system launched to help producers manage the growing mountain of paperwork. It is designed by industry for industry, with practical features for tracking movements, reporting to Canadian Cattle Identification Agency’s Canadian Livestock Tracking System (CLTS) database, and managing transport documentation.

While paper is still an option, the future is clear: better documentation and access to it, is moving into the cloud​.

Mitigating Risk in a High-Stakes Market Raising cattle has always come with risk, but the stakes feel even higher now. With input costs climbing, pasture conditions unpredictable, and markets responding to everything from global trade disruptions and tariffs to local drought, risk management needs to be part of every producer’s toolkit.

That starts with solid contracts— especially, when livestock are moving to custom feed yards, lease arrangements, or out-of-province pastures. Make sure responsibilities are clearly defined: who is responsible for care, who pays for losses, and what happens if plans change.

Include the end date, specify how disputes will be handled, and refer explicitly to applicable regulations​.

SCIENCE AND PRODUCTION Risk management also means understanding what the law requires. Are you moving cattle out of Saskatchewan?

You will need an inspection of the animals and inspection certificate to leave the province. Bringing them back from Alberta? Expect another inspection there.

No inspection is needed for returns from Manitoba, but keeping a self-completed manifest on hand is still best practice.

Regulations vary by province and understanding them before the truck rolls is your best insurance policy​.

Regulatory Winds Are Changing The government is in the final stages of passing the federal Animal Movement Reporting (Traceability) regulations, and the changes are significant. Once passed, certain times you move animals to or from a different premises, you will need to report that to the national database.

The goal here is traceability—an essential industry risk management tool that helps

contain disease outbreaks with minimal disruption. As producers, we know that every delay in movement can cost us dollars and opportunity. The faster we can localize and respond to an issue, the faster our business gets back on track​. Traceability should assist with this, but it relies on good data flows, distillation of that data into useful information, then on good processes for utilization of that information.

Provincially, recent updates to Saskatchewan’s traceability and manifest regulations are also setting the stage for more comprehensive tracking. LSS is working closely with both levels of government to ensure that tools like MyLivestock evolve with these new standards—so, you spend less time shuffling paper and more time managing your business.

Friends, welcome to the May edition of Beef Business Magazine!

By the time this comes out, spring should be in full bloom. I hope the rain has found you and the grass is green. It’s an exciting time to be in the cattle business!

Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) would like to extend a congratulations to all zones that hosted annual meetings. Attendance was strong, and the resolutions that came from those zones will set the direction for our board over the next year. Thank you for your participation and dedication to your industry.

The entire SSGA Board of Directors is looking forward to our upcoming Annual General Meeting from (AGM), June 8 to 10 in Moose Jaw. While the market is strong, and there is a chance of rain, it is important for this group to remain focused on its mandate and continue to build a stronger, more resilient industry.

One of the issues that will be discussed includes a comprehensive grasslands conservation policy framework. It is very easy to sit back and articulate what

we don’t like, but it is time to stand up and make known what we do support.

Livestock producers are conservationists by default. The grasslands that we grow and protect are the engines that drive our businesses.

(TB) case in Saskatchewan, this issue has become more concerning. Currently, if an animal in the wild tests positive for TB, every premises within 20 miles will be quarantined by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for testing.

It is our opinion that producers should be rewarded for the outstanding work that is being done to the maximum rate possible; in effect, conserving the most acres, for the most dollars. Programming that seeks to tie up lands forever, or that has a foundation of covering the most acres for the least amount of money, isn’t in the best interests of our members or the industry in the long term. The more options there are, the better chance you have to find a fit for your business.

Every year, there are elk harvested that were previously tagged in Nebraska.

The distance they travel only increases the risk to our industry, locally. While I enjoy seeing a large bull elk in the fall (we routinely winter 100 elk pairs), I do believe we need to improve our population controls in Saskatchewan.

Another topic that requires action is wildlife. Specifically, wildlife populations and the cost/risk they present to producers’ businesses. Currently, wildlife population management is the responsibility of the Ministry of Environment; while, compensation for wildlife damage falls to Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

Population counts by conservation officers and biologists at the Ministry of Environment do not align with the on-theground experiences of local ranchers.

In the North, there are significant concerns around predation from wolves, and province wide, the coyote population is thriving. Locally, our mule deer populations have been decimated by Chronic wasting disease (CWD), which seems to be a disease of overpopulation.

Province wide, elk herds are destroying stock piled grazing, bale stacks, fences and generally anything that is in their way.

There is also the continued threat of disease moving from the wild populations to our domesticated beef herd. Given the recent positive bovine tuberculosis

During the upcoming AGM, there will be discussions about expanding outfitting from the North all the way to the U.S. border, as well as about landowner use tags—specifically, tags that have two names on them.

We have seen from some jurisdictions in the U.S. that when ranchers are engaged in the process and have the opportunity to manage the herds they house proactively, the herd thrives and population health improves. Steps like these don’t serve to limit hunting to a smaller club, the draws should continue, and with an increased number of tags in circulation to provide more opportunity for everyone.

This report is being written a day after our federal election. While our group is apolitical, I am not. There is another version of this report that spoke of the excitement, hope, and change in policy direction for our industry. For too long, our country has been dominated by people who take things at the expense of people who make things. It is too early to know if the new administration will continue down that road to ruin. There have been some hopeful indications of a willingness to listen, but it is very hard for a leopard to change its spots.

Our organization will continue to champion business risk management (BRM) improvements, market access, interprovincial trade, CFIA modernization, and our right to exist on the land and produce food in the best way possible without the burden of senseless and costly overregulation. Prior to the election, the new federal ag minister seemed open to these concepts. Time will tell if we are able to take positive steps forward.

Celebrating Rangelands in 2026

Carolyn Gaudet, Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan In 2026, rangelands will be in the global spotlight and it is about time. The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP). This declaration reflects the importance of rangelands, and promotes an understanding and appreciation of rangelands and the people who use them around the world.

Globally, more than 100 countries and 375 organizations support having a year dedicated to rangelands and pastoralists.

What is considered a rangeland?

Rangelands are primarily covered by natural vegetation, predominately grasses or grass-like plants. They also support a high diversity of wildflowers, also known as forbs, and shrubs that may be grazed or provide forage for livestock and wildlife. Rangelands include native grasslands, savannas, shrublands, deserts, steppes, tundra, alpine vegetation, and marshes. In addition to providing forage for grazing animals, rangeland and grassland ecosystems deliver benefits vital to agriculture and the environment, including: habitat for plants, insects, and animals. Range and grasslands have deep root systems that capture and slowly release water as well as providing a rich underground environment for nutrient and energy cycling.

Who are pastoralists?

“Pastoralists” are people whose primary livelihood is raising domesticated or semi-domesticated animals that graze predominantly natural vegetation on rangelands. Pastoralists, who collectively care for an estimated one billion animals

worldwide (from cattle, sheep and goats to camels, yaks and reindeer), should be recognized for their role in stewarding rangelands.

Why an International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists?

Igshaan Samuels is a rangeland ecologist and co-chair of the Global Coordinating Group of IYRP called the IYRP Global Alliance. Samuels explained the initiative’s overarching goals: “The IYRP aims to increase global understanding of the importance of rangelands and pastoralism, debunk myths, and promote informed, science-based policies. This is a chance to make rangelands and pastoralists visible to the world.”

At the global scale, the IYRP initiative seeks to achieve:

• Greater awareness of rangelands and

pastoralists contributions to food security, economy, environment, cultural heritage, and social wellbeing; • Proclamations and resolutions made by the United Nations and other international entities in support of healthy rangelands, resilient pastoralists, and global rangeland stewardship; • Policy changes in favour of sustainable management and conservation of rangeland resources by pastoralists and other stakeholders; and

• Increased sustainable and ethical

investment in rangeland management and pastoralist livelihoods.

The Global Coordinating Group also developed 12 monthly themes to provide guidance and ideas to celebrate the year. These themes highlight urgent and relevant issues and show how pastoralism and rangelands across the globe share similar issues and concerns.

Saskatchewan IYRP Working Group In Saskatchewan, less than 20 per cent of our native grasslands remain.

Saskatchewan’s grassland stewards understand the importance of healthy grasslands. The Saskatchewan IYRP Working Group, which consists of Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan and Partners University of Saskatchewan, Nature Saskatchewan, and Society for Range Management—Prairie Parkland Chapter are hoping to bring awareness of rangelands and pastoralists to the general public. Supporting Grasslands through Practical Programs Mindy Hockley-Anderson

Saskatchewan is well known for its long history of ranching, and these remaining ranchers make up a large portion of the people left protecting our disappearing native grasslands. Saskatchewan Stock Growers Foundation (SSGF) works with ranchers and landowners to protect and improve rangeland health, through programming and long-term support for landowners.

SSGF programs are flexible and practical at their bare bones–two necessary approaches needed for project success. SSGF is rooted in the belief that supporting ranchers supports the conservation of native grasslands, and without these dedicated land stewards, our grasslands would suffer.

The wide array of SSGF programs have the ability to fit into most operational needs, including projects on rangelands that work to improve grazing practices, or signing an easement on a piece of land they believe should be protected long term. The flexibility of our programs complement the day-to-day tasks of ranching.

For potential projects on grasslands, landowners can explore SSGF habitat agreements. There are multiple types of agreements we offer, but our most popular are Habitat Management Agreements and Habitat Restoration Agreements. They can range from 15 to 30 years in length, but are not tied to the land title.

Habitat Restoration Agreements are applicable for native seeding projects.

SSGF requires a long-term commitment of 30 years from the landowner, where cultivated land is converted back to perennial cover using native plant species.

These are incredibly important projects because they connect fragmented areas of grasslands back together, and create biodiverse habitat for wildlife and species at risk, as well as a long-term, resilient, grazing resource for the landowner.

In contrast, our Habitat Management

Agreements can include numerous projects or infrastructure needs, and are typically 15 years in length. Projects such as cross fencing can easily be implemented to defer grazing on native grasslands until later in the year or when the vegetation is less sensitive to animal disturbance. It can also be used to force livestock to graze areas that are typically less desirable, while allowing other areas of pasture more time to rest and recover.

Fencing can also be used to protect riparian areas. Fencing off water sources can improve water quality while protecting riverbanks and shorelines from disruption; in turn, improving habitat for the wildlife that rely on intact riparian areas. Our fencing projects also focus on wildlife-friendly options when applicable.

Aside from fencing, there is also funding for invasive weed management.

Typically, these projects are costly and time-consuming for private landowners to undertake on their own, but partnering with SSGF can help mitigate risk. Effective invasive weed management can reduce the spread of weeds to new areas that were previously unaffected, or best case scenario, eradicate them completely.

If landowners have questions regarding increasing rangeland health, and how their pasture rotations fit into the overall picture of that, we can also explore the idea of rejuvenating tame-grass stands that may need a little help, so that we can rest native grass longer.

All of these habitat agreements provide a level of funding specific for each project, to help alleviate the total cost and risk for landowners. Supporting these projects supports the grasslands and truly makes an impact at the ground level.

If a landowner is more interested in protecting their grasslands, then an easement may suit their needs more appropriately. SSGF easements are designed to protect native grasslands from development, while still allowing the landowner to remain in control of their

rangeland—and they carry no grazing or haying restrictions.

SSGF offers both Term Conservation Easements (CE) and Perpetual Easements.

This makes us one of the most dynamic land trusts, with the well-being of the ranchers at the core of everything we do.

Our easements come with three basic restrictions: no break, no drain, and no development. These restrictions are necessary because the goal of an easement is to protect sensitive landscapes, and in order to do that, the landowner needs to ensure the grasslands are free from the threat of cultivation, urban expansion, or any type of development that degrades the habitat.

It is also important to make sure wetlands or riparian areas are able to remain intact and support a functional ecosystem.

The biggest difference between the two easements is that Term Conservation Easements are applied to a parcel of land for a set-term length, and are not on the land title indefinitely, like a Perpetual Easement would be.

A Term CE allows for more flexibility down the road for the landowner, and can almost serve as a trial for working with a land trust for that term length before agreeing to longer terms. Overall, they allow for increased adaptability and decision making about future land use.

A Perpetual CE may be more suited to a situation where the current landowner desires for the landscape to remain the way it has always been—regardless of who owns it in the future.
