Inauguration of New Intensive Care Unit After months of hard work, the New Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was officially inaugurated on May 2, 2008. The New ICU is located in the area that was vacated by the administrative offices as they moved on into the custom made Services building last year. The new, spacious, ICU has been designed according to the latest international recommendations and specifications, covering an area of 6,000 sq ft. The first phase consists of six fully equipped and state-of-the-art ICU rooms, each with a floor area of 250 sq. ft. Imran Khan, the Chairman of the Board of Governors and other members of the Board of Governors and Management were present on the occasion. Dr. Nausherwan Burki, Member Board of Governors, and driving force behind the planning and construction of the Hospital, unveiled the plaque while each of the rooms was inaugurated in memory of Mr. Said ud Din, Rafiqui, Mr. Zarar Khan, Khadija & Mr. Saleem Khan, Hafiz Ayaz Mahmood (Shaheed), Haji Nazir Ahmed Awan and Mrs Ghulam Zainab, by their families who donated it.

The construction of this ICU marked the completion of the first two phases. The second phase will include the construction of an additional 10 ICU rooms for which donations of Rs. 5 million for each room are awaited from well-wishers like you.

The inauguration was followed by a presentation by Dr. Aasim Yusuf, Medical Director of SKMCH&RC in which he explained the purpose and need for the new facility. Dr. Faisal Sultan, Chief Executive Officer also shed some light on the upcoming projects of the Hospital. Imran Khan thanked the donors for their generous donations and shared information with the assembled guests as to the financial challenges that the Hospital faced today. He informed them that today it took more to run the Hospital annually than it did to construct the Hospital in 1994. At this critical juncture in the Hospital's development, more help is needed from our well wishers and supporters to ensure that we can continue to provide excellent care to as many patients as possible.

Human Rights Society of Pakistan Awards SKMT The Human Rights Society of Pakistan on its 27th Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony held on May 11, 2008 recognized Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre for its humanitarian efforts over the years. The Society recognized and appreciated the fair and equitable treatment provided to indigent cancer patients at the Hospital and said that it was truly a model institution that everyone must take inspiration from.

The tobacco epidemic has killed 100 million people worldwide in the 20th century and according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2008 Report, by the year 2030, there will be more than 8 million deaths every year unless urgent action is taken. What is even more alarming is that nearly 80% of these deaths are expected to occur in developing countries.

This year, to mark World Tobacco Day, SKMCH&RC launched a public-awareness campaign against tobacco on May 31, 2008. The campaign included creating awareness through television advertisements, display of anti-tobacco messages on billboards in the major cities of Pakistan, and a poster competition involving all major schools across Pakistan.

Food and Dietary Services Obtains Specialist Certification.

The Food and Dietary Services of SKMCH&RC has been awarded the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Certification (HACCP). This is a prestigious and specialized global certification designed for food facilities, focusing on hygiene and safety aspects of food & beverages starting from the point of selection of raw materials to the provision of finished products. SKMCH&RC is the first hospital facility in Pakistan to have achieved this certification.

Karachi Update The 8th meeting of the Board of Governors of SKMT- Karachi was held on April 29, 2008. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Nausherwan Burki and attended by eminent members like Justice (R) Nasir Aslam Zahid, Mr. Saifuddin Zoomkawala, Mian Muhammad Abdullah, Mr. Munir Kamal, Mrs. Mariana Karim, Mr. Ali Habib, Mr. Liaquat Merchant and Dr. Faisal Sultan (CEO, SKMCH&RC-Lahore). Progress on all the projects in Karachi, including the Collection Centre, Laboratory, Walk in Clinic (for early detection and screening of cancer in the Sindh region), the Diagnostic Centre (construction in progress) and the 2nd Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre was discussed. The Board Members reaffirmed their support and commitment towards completion of the projects leading to the Hospital in Karachi and stressed on the need to expedite their construction so as to be able to benefit cancer patients of the region soon.

Karachi Diagnostic Centre In its effort to extend state-of-the-art diagnostic services to other parts of the country, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust embarked upon the construction of its first diagnostic centre in the province of SIndh in September 2007. This Rs. 170 million construction project over an area of 2,275 sq. yards is located on 1st Street, Phase VII Extension, DHA, Karachi. It will include state-of-the-art diagnostic services (MRI, Flouroscopy, CT, Mammography), a Pathology Collection Centre, a W a l k - i n - C l i n i c t o facilitate the screening and early detection of cancer, and a Chemotherapy Bay.

Launch of Friends of SKMT SKMCH&RC launched its first formal volunteer group 'Friends of SKMT'-Lahore Chapter (Ladies Wing) on May 31, 2008 with the aim to support the Hospital in its fundraising activities. The beautifully arranged event included an introduction to the group by Dr. Adeeba Quddus, followed by a few words from Mrs. Yousaf Raza Gilani, the Chief Guest and a thank you note by Dr. Faisal Sultan (Chief Executive Officer, SKMCH&RC). Other highlights of the evening included auction of paintings of Khurshid Alam Gohar Qalam, Bashir Mujid and Asad Farooqi by Waseem Akram, display of elaborate dresses donated by famous designers including Nasreen Humayun, Honey Waqar, and Asifa & Nabeel, a few verses from a favorite song by Hadiqa Kiyani and a musical performance by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. We hope to be able to launch similar volunteer groups under the umbrella of Friends of SKMT in other major cities of Pakistan.

Childrens Mela 2008 The Annual Childrens' Mela is the most awaited day of the year for every child being treated at the Hospital. It is a day that is truly theirs and full of surprises, games, prizes and festivity. This year the Paediatric Oncology Department organized the event on April 5, 2008. The special feature about the event was the fact that all performances from the Talawat, Naat, to the play 'Aladin ka Jado Chiragh', songs, and other performances were all done by the children being treated at the Hospital themselves.

It is the ultimate symbol of hope for the thousands of other patients being treated at the Hospital and all those who support our cause. The event was sponsored by Roche and a number of other companies. Mr. Abdus Samad, Director Marketing Roche was the Chief Guest. Other favorite celebrities who attended the event included Veena Malik, Babariq, Syed Noor and Jiya Ali.

SKMCH&RC Website The SKMCH & RC website www.shaukatkhanum.org.pk has recently been re-designed and renovated with a new look. The website is now even more user-friendly and provides detailed information about the Hospital, patient care, education and training, research, job opportunities, news and events, and the ways in which you can contribute and help suffering patients. Please do not hesitate to give us feedback on how you would like us to improve it further.

International Nurses Day The International Nurses Day is celebrated all over the world on May 12, 2008 to honour the memory of Florence Nightingale and to recognize the contributions she has made in the field of nursing care. At SKMCH&RC the Nursing Division celebrated the event by reaffirming their commitment to nursing care. The Clinical Nurse Managers took this opportunity to stress on the important aspects of caring such as the importance of hand washing, vaccinations, clean water and clean food, cancer awareness. Posters and leaflets were developed and posted all around the hospital for staff and visitors to read and learn from.

Tobacco and Smoking

By Dr. Mansur Javaid, Consultant Pulmonary and Critical Care, SKMCH&RC Smoking is a huge problem worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that there are approximately 1.1 billion regular smokers in the world, which is one-third of the global population aged 15 years and older. Globally, roughly 47 percent of men and 12 percent of women smoke. In recent years tobacco use has been declining in many countries in North America and Western Europe but increasing in many others, especially in Asia (and in Pakistan).

Cigarette smoking It is important to realize that smoking is not just a habit.

Smoking and Tobacco use is an addiction. Nicotine present men have a 70% in cigarette smoke is an addictive drug. To understand how smoking kills people let us look at the diseases cigarette smoking causes.

Heart: Cigarette smoking is a major cause of Heart attacks. Heart attack death rates are 60-70% greater in male smokers than non-smokers.

There is an increased risk of Strokes among smokers and 15% of deaths due to strokes are due to smoking.

Lung Cancer: The most important cause of Lung cancer is Cigarette Smoking. The fact that cigarette smoking causes Lung Cancer was described in 1950.

Hence we have known for more than half a century that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer. Men who smoke one pack a day increase their risk of lung cancer ten fold compared with nonsmokers. Men who smoke two packs per day increase their risk 25 times to non-smokers.
