isma was 5 years old when she was admitted for treatment at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in 1997.

She had started complaining of constant headaches some months before and doctors in Sargodha were of the opinion that these were due to meningitis. However, after a series of tests in Lahore, she was diagnosed to be suffering from Germ Cell Tumour of the brain.

continued for a year and a half but, by the grace of Allah, the doctors at Shaukat Khanum were able to give the family the tremendous news that Bisma had been cured.

Bisma’s entire treatment was financed by the Hospital, thanks to the generosity of our large number of supporters and donors. Her mother stated, at the end of her daughter’s treatment, that she had been touched particularly by the devotion and friendliness of the Hospital staff, who worked day and night to take care of her daughter. They have developed friendly ties with a number of staff members, and pay them a visit whenever they are in Lahore.

Bisma is the youngest and only sister amongst her 3 siblings. Her father is a spare parts supplier in Sargodha and her brothers are college students. Her family was devastated to learn of her diagnosis as they were unable to support the cost of her treatment.

However, they refused to lose hope and were determined to face the struggles necessary to save Bisma’s life.

A relative, who was being treated at SKMCH&RC at that time, suggested that they bring Bisma to the Hospital for treatment.

After staging investigations, treatment was begun with

chemotherapy. Later, surgery was also required to place a shunt into her brain, to relieve excessive pressure caused by a build-up of fluid. The testing treatment

Bisma is now 16 years old, and being the only daughter is an integral part of her family. She is studying privately for her examinations for grade 5, and likes to help her mother around the house in her free time. She loves to watch TV, and smiles in remembrance of some of her happy moments at SKMCH every time she hears about the Hospital.

Hide Collection Campaign 2007-08 he 16th Hide Collection Campaign of the Hospital was held in December 2007 on the occasion of Eid ul Azha. More than seventy hoardings and hundreds of banners were placed all over Lahore to launch this massive campaign, all of which were sponsored by supporters of the cause. The Campaign, with more than 200 camps set up by SKMCH employees and volunteers, was a huge success.

Almost 36,000 hides were collected by SKMCH&RC, which

is a 33% improvement on last year’s figure. This translated into revenue of more than Rs. 20 million registering a 66% growth over last year’s figures.

A colorful function was arranged to celebrate the record breaking performance of the campaign for the employees and volunteers who had participated to make it a success. Dr. Faisal Sultan, the

CEO, mentioned that the Hide Campaign has now become a symbol of SKMCH&RC and we are now recognized as one of the most trusted names when it comes to donating hides.

The employee volunteers were given certificates of appreciation for their commendable efforts as they worked at odd hours and in extreme temperatures during their Eid holidays. The ceremony was followed by an entertaining performance by renowned stage performers and then a dinner.

Groundbreaking Ceremony of Cyclotron Bunker at SKMCH & RC he groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of the Cyclotron bunker, which is an integral part of our new PET-CT scanning system, was held at the Hospital on December 7, 2007.

perhaps one of the greatest achievements in an adolescent’s life. It means a lot more when they are a part of the ‘special’ world who are often not understood well by the society.

These three special children have broken the barriers of disability and proved to be good learners.

They are good sportsmen and are now working on a regular basis as Patient Guides in the Department of Outpatient and

Cancer Awareness Campaign & Blood Camps

KMCH&RC has always given special attention to educational institutions, as students provide much needed impetus to our awareness efforts. This campaign was launched to increase awareness of the risk factors and reduce the incidence of cancer in Pakistan; and to involve young students in the SKMCH cause.

Our team, consisting of doctors and marketing representatives, visit the schools and give a presentation on Cancer Awareness. This presentation is followed by sale of ‘Cancer is Curable’ wristbands, and a Blood Donation Camp.

Our team this quarter has visited over 15 institutions including branches of the Beaconhouse School System, The City School, BETS & TEVTA.

What you Need to know about Lung Cancer Human lungs are two spongy organs located on each side of the heart. These lungs are connected to the outside through Bronchus that transports air from the outside to the lungs. Within the lungs, each bronchus is divided into several smaller bronchioles that each end in a tiny air sac called an alveolus. A network of tiny blood vessels, called capillaries, surround the alveolus. Most lung cancers begin in the epithelial cells lining the bronchus. These cancerous epithelial cells continue to divide out of control and develop into a lump called carcinoma. Lung cancer is the most common cancer among men and the second most common in women of Pakistan. So, how do you know when there is a problem? Well, to know that, you first need to know what causes this cancer.

Risk Factors for Lung Cancer Factors that influence risk of developing lung cancer include: 1. Smoking: It is the leading cause of lung cancer as it causes genetic changes in cells of the lung that ultimately lead to cancer. Exposure to second-hand smoke, Huqa, sheesha and other tobaccocontaining products all increase the risk greatly.

2. Chronic lung disease: Chronic diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema and tuberculosis, increases the risk of lung cancer greatly.

3. A s b e s t o s : A n a t u r a l l y occurring mineral that is

frequently used in construction. Inhalation of particles of this substance can lead to lung cancer.

4. Personal and family history of cancer: The more closely related an individual is to someone with lung cancer, the more likely they are to share the genes that increase the risk.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer There are no definite symptoms associated with early stage lung cancer. Symptoms of advanced stage disease can include the following: 1. Persistent cough 2. Sputum streaked with blood 3. Chest pain without apparent cause 4. Voice change 5. Recurrent pneumonia or bronchitis You must seek urgent medical attention if you have any or all of these symptoms. However, remember that the symptoms are common to many conditions and most men and women with these symptoms do not have cancer.

Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Lung Cancer is treatable if detected at an early stage. If you have a symptom or a screening test result that suggests lung cancer, your doctor will perform various tests to help in the diagnosis.

examine the lining) 5. S p u t u m cytology (Examination of cells in the Phlegm) If you are indeed diagnosed with cancer, be assured that there are many treatment options for those with lung cancer today. These include: 1. Surgery: To remove cancer tissue.

2. Chemotherapy: To destroy cancer cells using anti-cancer drugs.

3. Radiation: To destroy cancer cells using high energy rays.

4. Biological therapy: To boost your body’s natural immune system against cancer.

There are also many ways these treatments can be combined. So, it is usually good to get a second opinion before starting any therapy. Treatment depends upon many things (e.g., how big the cancer is, how much it has spread, and the patient's age and overall health).

Early Detection and Prevention The following can reduce the risk for lung cancer.

1. DO NOT SMOKE and / or use other tobacco products.

2. Proper management and treatment of any chronic lung diseases you might have.

3. Maintain healthy weight and lifestyle.

4. Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in red meat.

Reduce exposure to chemicals involved in increasing risk including asbestos, automotive and industrial pollution.
