Inauguration of Pakistan's First PET CT Scanning System Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) took a huge leap forward in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer with the installation of Pakistan's first-ever Positron Emission Tomography CT (PET CT) scanning system. Installed at a cost of US$ 5 million, Pakistan's first PET CT scanning system is a powerful imaging technology that is today considered essential for the early diagnosis, accurate staging, precise treatment and monitoring of cancer. Until now, patients from Pakistan had to travel to Europe or to Singapore in order to have a PET CT scan. SKMCH&RC is proud to be the first hospital to provide this facility in Pakistan.

The inauguration ceremony of the PET CT scanning system was held at the Hospital on Sunday, February 7, 2010. A number of donors, physicians, journalists, some members of the Board of SKMT and other attended this ceremony. The Ambassador of Belgium in Pakistan, His Excellency Hans-Christian Kint, the Trade Commissioner of the Royal Embassy of Belgium in Pakistan Mr. Abid Husain, the Chairman & CEO, Philips Pakistan, Mr. Asad S Jaffar, the Chairman of the Board of SKMT, Mr. Imran Khan, and the CEO of the Hospital, Dr. Faisal Sultan addressed the audience. Mr. Imran Khan said that the installation of the PET CT scanning system would revolutionize cancer treatment in Pakistan and he thanked Mr. Abid Husain, Trade Commissioner of Belgium in Pakistan, for his support. The equipment for production of the FDG isotope has been supplied by a company based in Belgium, Ion Beam Applications (IBA) with the help of a 35 per cent grant given by the government of the Walloon Region of Belgium, on the recommendation of its Trade Commissioner in Islamabad. The event was hosted by the renowned journalist, Mr. Hamid Mir of Geo news, while Sumaira Yousaf, the first cancer patient registered at SKMCH&RC in 1994, was the Chief Guest at the occasion.
Opening of New Digital Mammography System Pakistan has the highest incidence of breast cancer in Asia. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre took another step in its fight against this pervasive disease with the installation of a new, state-of-of-the-art, Digital Mammography System at the Hospital. The Inauguration ceremony, marking the installation of Pakistan's first such system, was held on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Mr. Abdul Karim, the donor, inaugurated the system in the presence of Mr. Imran Khan and senior management of the Hospital.
Inauguration of Shaukat Khanum Diagnostic Centre & Clinic-Karachi The recent inauguration of the Shaukat Khanum Diagnostic Centre & Clinic in Phase VII Extension, DHA, Karachi is another milestone in our efforts to take state-of-the-art services as close to the people as possible. The Inauguration Ceremony of this Rs. 170 million construction project, spread over an area of 2,275 sq. yards, was held on Sunday, January 31, 2010. The event was well attended by distinguished guests from all sections of the society. Dr Nausherwan Khan Burki, Member Board of Governors, while thanking the guests for their presence, highlighted the aims and objectives of the Diagnostic Centre. Mr. Imran Khan termed this diagnostic centre as the first step towards establishing a complete cancer hospital in Karachi, the groundbreaking of which is planned for the end of this year. This newly constructed Diagnostic Centre & Clinic will be equipped with a PET CT scanner, to be installed at a cost of Rs. 200 million. On this occasion, the Chairman of the INFAQ Foundation announced a donation of Rs. 10 million towards the installation of the PET CT scanning system.
