Brick by Brick Construction of New Clinical Tower at Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Lahore

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore is going to witness the largest expansion since its opening, twenty-two years ago. The addition of this nine level Clinical Tower will greatly increase the Hospital’s capacity to treat more poor cancer patients. Rs. 3.5 billion is needed for the construction of this Clinical Tower. Building Hope, Brick by Brick: Construction of the New Clinical Tower at SKMCH&RC, Lahore Each year, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore has recorded an increase in activity in all clinical areas. The Hospital has always faced capacity constraints, and has continued to rationalize its patient induction policy, striving to induct the largest possible number of indigent patients that it can effectively treat to the very high standards it has set itself. We continue to raise the bar for quality

workloads. As a part of this endeavour, planning is currently underway for the construction of a new clinical tower at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in Lahore.

The new clinical tower is planned as a nine-level building and will represent the largest expansion the Hospital has witnessed since its inauguration, nearly twenty-two

This expansion will greatly enhance the Hospital's capacity to accept and to treat more cancer patients as well as provide greater opportunities for research, training and education of healthcare professionals. Cutting-Edge Technology: RapidArc Enables More Efficient and Effective Delivery of Radiotherapy Radiotherapy is one of the most common treatments used for cancer. Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is continuously working towards improving the efficacy of radiotherapy by investing in

technology that ensures radiotherapy is delivered to tumours with the highest possible level of precision, thus minimising radiation delivery to normal tissues.

Equipped with four linear accelerators as well as a high dose

brachytherapy system, the Radiation Oncology department at the hospital in Lahore provides radiation treatment to nearly 300 patients each day. The department has recently acquired RapidArc technology which not only increases the precision of treatment but also significantly shortens treatment times.

Shortened treatment times will not only improve the experience of radiotherapy for patients but, more importantly, will also enhance the capacity of the Hospital to treat more patients.

The Hospital is also in the process of acquiring a fifth advanced linear accelerator which will further augment the Hospital's capability to provide radiotherapy. This fifth linear accelerator will be fitted with a luminous sky ceiling to provide a calming effect for patients while they receive radiotherapy. This move is yet another example of the Hospital's exceptional commitment to patient comfort and care.
