A Journey of Hope – From Lahore to Peshawar On December 29th, 2015, the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Peshawar opened its doors to cancer patients. Built according to the latest international healthcare standards, equipped with the latest in medical technology, and staffed by highly-trained professionals, the SKMCH&RC, Peshawar promises to continue the legacy of SKMCH&RC, Lahore. With the completion of the first phase of construction, clinical services have

In addition, the blood bank is now functional and able to provide the full range of blood products, screened to the highest international standards, including NAT-testing to ensure that blood products are free of infection. The Radiology department has X - R a y, f l u o r o s c o p y, u l t r a s o u n d , mammography, CT and MRI facilities, and our PET-CT scanner, the first in Pakistan north of Lahore, should also be operational this summer. In line with our mission to alleviate the
CT scan commenced at the Hospital. The Walkin-Clinic, which functions as the primary filter to select potential patients, was one of the first clinical services to begin at the Hospital, and actually moved to the site of the new hospital over eighteen months ago. As of now, outpatient clinics, inpatient beds, a fully equipped intensive care unit (ICU), a full-service pharmacy and twenty-four hour emergency services are fully functional. In addition, our chemotherapy service has also commenced operations at the hospital, which is of tremendous benefit to our patients, who were previously required to make repeated physically, emotionally and financially demanding trips to Lahore to have cyclical chemotherapy treatments every few weeks. In conjunction with the commencement of clinical services, Pathology and Radiology services have also begun in Peshawar. In Pathology, we now have phlebotomy, routine chemistry, special chemistry, haematology, microbiology and biopsy (FNA, with on-site evaluation by a trained consultant cytopathologist)
Fully qualified and trained clinical psychologists, nutritionists and respiratory therapists also cater to the needs of our patients in Peshawar. The in-house Food & Dietary service is also now functional, with food being prepared with the utmost care, upholding the highest possible standards of hygiene, for patients, those accompanying them, and for our staff. Palliative care clinic suffering of cancer patients by both curative and palliative means, the Hospital has also commenced palliative medicine service at Peshawar. Bringing end of life treatment close to the homes of our patients from the Khyber Paktunkhwa and surrounding areas demonstrates the Hospital's commitment towards ensuring the dignity of human life.

is an integrated system that has helped to connect patient care between our treatment facilities in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. This software system, developed in-house by our tremendous team of software engineers, helps to deliver efficient patient care. From the ordering of investigative tests to dispensation of medication, everything relevant to patient care is online – only a few clicks away from the caregivers. The SKMCH&RC, Peshawar has the advantage of benefitting from the experiences of SKMCH&RC, Lahore. This also means, however, that the hospital in Peshawar will have to live up to the high standards set and maintained by the hospital in Lahore over the last twenty one years. The journey of hope does not end here, of course. Much work needs to be done in Peshawar in the years to come, and naturally, Lahore will, itself, also always be a work in progress. We have also recently purchased land in Karachi, for the third Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, now in the early phase of planning.

The beginning of the year 2016 saw an enhancement of the Hospital's preoperative and post-operative care

services with an increase in the capacity of its Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), increasing the number of beds from six to sixteen, and thus ensuring top-class post-operative care for all our patients. In addition, new four-bedded holding bays for male and for female patients have been added, together with waiting areas for adults and for children. The addition of a Paediatric Holding
Bay is an example of the patient-centric healthcare approach at the Hospital. Equipped with books and toys, painted in vibrant colors, and supervised by a trained play-therapist, the paediatric holding bay aims to provide preoperative care in an anxiety-free environment to our young cancer patients.
SKMCH&RC: A World of Possibilities The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre's very existence is living proof of the sheer power of an idea, when pursued with determination. As has happened in previous years, this year, too, people having diverse interests joined us to make their ideas possible – leading to the idea of life being possible for our poor cancer patients. For the love of automobiles and SKMCH&RC, Pak-Wheels Pakistan dedicated its auto-shows in Lahore and Multan to the SKMCH&RC, P e s h a w a r. T h e ' F r i e n d s o f SKMCH&RC' joined hands with the fashion fraternity and pulled-off a successful fundraising event, The Festival of Life, which was held at the SKMCH&RC, Lahore. The event, featuring a Fashion-Lounge, various food stalls and a vibrant play-area, drew huge crowds. 'The Khalis Food Market' and '180 degrees' came together to hold a 'Fitness Fiesta' at the Lahore Hospital.
