Inspiration for making the Hospital Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is the brainchild of Pakistan’s Cricket World Cup winning captain and now Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Imran Khan. The inspiration to build the Hospital came after his mother, Mrs. Shaukat Khanum, succumbed to cancer in 1985. During his mother’s illness, he witnessed up-close the plight of poor cancer patients in the hospitals of Pakistan and realised the need for a specialized cancer centre in his country. Being a developing country, where many do not have access to even elementary health care facilities, cancer was considered the ultimate symbol of hopelessness and almost certain death. Prior to the establishment of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore, no specialised institution for the comprehensive treatment of cancer existed in Pakistan.

Imran Khan therefore decided to embark upon his dream of making cancer care accessible to the people of his

country, regardless of their ability to pay. Hence, began the story of the enduring love of a son for his mother and of the passion of a nation.

Fundraising By 1990, after one and a half years of fundraising, Imran seemed to have exhausted all his options, with only limited funds having been collected. He turned then to school children, launching a fundraising team of “Imran’s Tigers”. The Tigers ended up creating history, collecting donations from motorists at /- Ĩ '$"#/.D ) "*$)" !-*( **- /* **- /* collect funds. They not only collected enough money to allow the construction of the Hospital but also created awareness among /# +0 '$ *! /# ) !*- /# ) /$*)N. Ī-./ cancer hospital.

Pakistan’s win, under Imran Khan’s captaincy, in the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Melbourne # '+ **./ !0) - $.$)" ħ*-/.D 0/ 4 7??:D the project was still short of funds and, by now donor fatigue had set in at home and amongst overseas Pakistanis. The Hospital was planned /* *+ ) $) ' / 7??: 0/ $) /* - *! /# / 4 -D ʆ : ($''$*) 2 - ./$'' ) /* *(+' / and to equip the Hospital. It was at this point that Imran Khan and his team decided to test the support of ordinary Pakistanis. They set out on a hugely successful mass contact campaign which started in mid-November and ' ./ 0)/$' 8> ( -D 7??:E # 4 /*0- twenty-nine cities across Pakistan, collecting US$ 5 million in this six week period from the ordinary people of Pakistan. In the mornings, Imran Khan would address school assemblies

Master Plan Dr. Nausherwan K. Burki developed the master plan for the Hospital in 1990, while he was Professor of Medicine at the University of Kentucky, USA. He oversaw the building of the Hospital, which was designed by Graham Rapp *! -- .($/#D 0 Y ++D - #$/ /. specialising in health planning in Louisville, Kentucky. Design details on site were handled by Nayyar Ali Dada and Associates, of Lahore. Local engineering was performed by Progressive *).0'/ )/.D #*- E &$./ )N. Ī-./ # 0& / Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, located in Johar Town in Lahore, is built on a 20 acre site. It was planned in three phases 2$/# /# Ī-./ *) *./$)" ) -'4 ʆ 88 ($''$*)G nearly 67 percent of the required budget came in the form of donations. Dr. Burki remains the Chief Medical Advisor to the Trust, and a member of the Board of Governors, continuing to be SKMCH&RC

involved with programme development, quality *)/-*'D ) - -0$/( )/ *! *).0'/ )/ ./ ħD while also working as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center, in Farmington, Connecticut, USA.

Inauguration Finally, against all odds, after the completion *! /# Ī-./ +# . *! /# *.+$/ 'D # 0& / Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre opened its doors to + /$ )/. *) ( - 8?D 7??:E //$)" new trend in Pakistan, the Hospital was not inaugurated by a VIP but by a ten-year-old cancer patient.

Where we are today The Lahore hospital has gone from strength to strength, establishing a reputation for clinical excellence, and for research, and was awarded JCI accreditation in 2018. Consistently, the hospital has continued to treat more than 75% of all cancer patients seen completely free of charge.

Given the fact that close to 30% of patients seen at Lahore have been from the KPK province, or from Afghanistan, a decision was made to open the second hospital of the Trust in Peshawar. Construction commenced in 2012 ) /# . *) Y 2 . $) 0"0- / $) .# 2 - *) ( - 8?D 2015. Maintaining the traditions of clinical quality established in Lahore,

Clinical Update

We were awarded accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI) for our Lahore hospital in 2018 and for the Peshawar hospital in 2019. JCI is an international body based in the United States that recognises hospitals all over the world for quality in all aspects of their functioning.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, at our hospitals in Lahore and in Peshawar, we continued to deliver cancer care in line with our mission statement, based on the principles of quality and equality. We remained dedicated to providing care to all our patients in compliance with the standards of the Joint Commission International.

Fighting cancer amidst the COVID-19 pandemic # Ī-./ . . *!

We also decided that, as with cancer treatment, all care provided to these non-Shaukat Khanum patients would be free, if the patient was unable to pay.

At the same time, of course, we were acutely aware of our primary responsibility to our cancer patients. Being the largest cancer care provider in the country, cancer patients throughout the region have come to rely heavily on our facilities. Life-saving treatment for such patients cannot be deferred interminably, even amidst a pandemic. Therefore, chemotherapy and radiation treatment have continued uninterrupted, throughout the pandemic. Likewise, emergency surgery for cancer patients continued without a day’s interruption. Elective surgery was stopped for two weeks, before resuming again in April, initially for day-case procedures but extending rapidly over the next few weeks to encompass the full range of cancer surgical procedures by ($ J 4E ) *- - /* - 0 -*2 $)" ) + /$ )/ ī*2 $) /# hospitals, we launched a telemedicine outpatient clinic service in early April, by means of which several hundred patients were seen and evaluated each day by our *).0'/ )/.E / /$( 2# ) /- 1 ' 2 . $Ĩ 0'/ !*- (*./ people, this served as a source of considerable comfort for our patients, secure in the knowledge that help from Shaukat Khanum was only a phone call away. In 2020, we recorded more than 10,000 new + /$ )/ - "$./- /$*). -*.. *0- ! $'$/$ .D Ī"0- *(+ - ' to previous years, despite the challenges presented by the pandemic. Across our various facilities, we saw nearly 170,000 patients in the outpatient clinics, with around 12,000 admissions. Approximately 5.12 million pathology tests, 160,000 radiology and nuclear medicine tests and procedures, 65,000 radiation procedures and 15,000 surgical procedures were performed. 53,567 chemotherapy visits were recorded and more than 556,000 prescriptions (including the latest chemotherapeutic agents) were issued from pharmacy.

In 2017, when Ayyan was only one and a half years old, his mother noticed something odd in the pictures she /**& *! #$(E $. ' !/ 4 . After .*( /$( D 2# ) /# - ī /$*) ( (*- prominent, Ayyan’s father researched about it on his own and became concerned at the word that came up: cancer.

Immediately, the parents took Ayyan, their Ī-./J *-) ) *)'4 .*)D /* '* ' #*.+$/ ' $) Lahore. They were told that the signs and symptoms were suggestive of cancer, indeed, and his eye would have to be removed. They were referred to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC), Lahore for specialized treatment.

Ayyan’s father works as an accountant in a factory and does his best to provide for his family. At that time, he knew that cancer treatment was beyond his means. In those moments of uncertainty, there was a single beacon of hope that pierced through the family’s despair—the promise of best possible cancer treatment by SKMCH&RC. # 4 # %0./ ' - / /# $- .*)N. Five years old now, Ayyan is not going to school due to COVID-19 pandemic but he is taught at home by his parents.

Lost time is never found again and those dealing with cancer are more acutely aware of the value of time than anyone else. . His father, a school teacher, would not be complacent and took him to another doctor who ordered a biopsy. As the results indicated cancer, Saad was referred to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Peshawar. # * /*-. 3+' $) /* #$( /# / 2 . $ ")*. 2$/# 1 ) ./ " * "&$)N. 4(+#*( D /4+ *! ) -E 2 . devastated by the news but he believed in practicality instead of lamenting the lost time. He was determined to stay strong for his son as giving up was not an option. Saad received chemotherapy between April and September of 2019, at SKMCH&RC in Peshawar, near to his family that include his parents and three sisters. Their presence comforted him and kept his morale high. His treatment with radiation therapy was completed at SKMCH&RC, Lahore. With commencement of radiation therapy at SKMCH&RC, Peshawar since then, patients like Saad no longer need to travel to Lahore.

Before his diagnosis, Saad went to school and was enrolled in nursery class. During /- /( )/D # /**& 4 - *ħ . #**'E *2 # # . *(+' / /$1 ) - /- /( )/ and once again, he is going to school and learning new words every day. He can write his name and spell three letter words. He hopes to become a pilot one day and conquer the skies just like he conquered cancer.

His father pleads with other parents to stay vigilant and not to delay clinical assessment if something seems wrong with their child. Suspecting cancer, she was advised to visit the One-Stop Breast Clinic of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre. After a detailed clinical evaluation, she 2 . $ ")*. 2$/# - ./ ) -E - Ī-./ thought was about her eight-year-old daughter whom she could not imagine growing up without a mother. Today, Sumaira has defeated cancer and once again, she is able to get her daughter ready for school in the mornings. She is grateful for the routine and tasks that were mundane before and are special now. Combing her child’s hair, ironing her school uniform and preparing her lunch are all reminders of a second life. She hopes she is able to see her daughter grow into a strong woman one day and that she is there to celebrate all the life’s milestones with her.

Then one day, she told her mother there was blood in her urine. They immediately took her to a local doctor in Lahore. At SKMCH&RC, Lahore, Hira’s treatment plan was devised by a multi-disciplinary team of doctors. It included chemotherapy to shrink the tumour, followed by surgical removal of the cancerous mass, then more chemotherapy to ensure any residual cancerous cells were destroyed. Her birthday was on December 9th and towards the end of the same month, she underwent surgery. The entire family came together, relatives and acquaintances who had not met for years came to see Hira to wish her good health. Hira displayed great will power throughout treatment. When she started losing hair, she only allowed her father to shave her head. Although she did not shed a tear at the loss but she eagerly awaited for treatment to end so her hair would grow back.

Her mother says there were two factors that kept her going during those dark times.

One was Hira’s dadi, her grandmother, who provided immense moral support to the parents. Having lost a son of her own to disease, she knew the pain of potential loss and the courage required to face it. Second factor was the attitude of the Shaukat

His second son, who is still a young boy, accompanies his father daily to work so they can earn enough to put food on the table for the family. Despite these dismal circumstances, he has tremendous faith and continues to strive to provide the best that he can for his family. # ) $) 867? # 3+ -$ ) .*( *2 ' ) bladder problems, he visited a local hospital where he was diagnosed with cancer. He was referred to the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore and was registered for treatment in March 2019.
