zu 35 Jahren Sammlertätigkeit und meinem 70. Geburtstag legen wir Ihnen diese Publikation mit der Werkübersicht der SAMMLUNG SCHROTH vor.

We are issuing this publication with an overview of work in the SCHROTH COLLECTION to mark my 70th birthday and 35 years activity as a collector.

Ganz herzlich möchte ich – auch im Namen der Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst als Herausgeberin – meiner Tochter Miriam Schroth für die gestalterische und administrative Arbeit an dem Katalog und der Kunsthistorikerin Juliane Rogge für Konzeption und Redaktion danken.

Die uns schon im Vorfeld bei der Ideensammlung zu beiden Jubiläen entgegengebrachten Anfeuerungen haben das Team noch enthusiastischer werden lassen diesen Kraftakt zu stemmen. Ich habe viele Interviews mit anderen Sammlern gelesen und bei allen eine hohe Übereinstimmung der Gefühle, Intuitionen und Zielsetzungen gefunden. Dies hat mich in meiner Sammlertätigkeit und zur Vermittlung weiter bestärkt. Die Kunstvermittlung wird seit 2016 durch die Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst mit dem RAUM SCHROTH im Museum Wilhelm Morgner getragen und verstärkt. Über die fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit im Museum Wilhelm Morgner können wir uns auf Sammlungsseite, aber auch auf Besucherseite überaus glücklich schätzen. Genießen wir, angeregt durch das Studium des Sammlungskonzepts und der Intentionen der vertretenen Künstler*innen, die Jubiläumsausstellung format und auch die zukünftigen Ausstellungen konkreter, konstruktiver und konzeptueller Kunst im RAUM SCHROTH.

I have read a lot of interviews with other collectors and have always found far-reaching agreement regarding our emotions, intuitions and aims. This further strengthened my resolve in terms of my own collecting and showing of the collection. Since 2016, the public presentation of the art has been managed and consolidated by the Foundation Conceptual Art with the ROOM SCHROTH in the Museum Wilhelm Morgner. As collectors as well as visitors, we have every reason to be delighted with the Museum Wilhelm Morgner‘s highly productive cooperation. Inspired by a study of the collecting concept and the intentions of the artists represented, let us enjoy the celebration exhibition format as well as future exhibitions of Concrete, Constructive and Conceptual Art in the ROOM SCHROTH.

In diesem Katalogteil werden die Kunstwerke in der chronologischen Reihenfolge ihrer Aufnahme in die SAMMLUNG SCHROTH anhand von Bildmaterial und den wichtigsten Werkangaben vorgestellt.

This section of the catalogue uses photographic material and the most important information about the objects to present the artworks in the chronological order of their entry into the SCHROTH COLLECTION.

Auch nach gründlichen Recherchen von allen Seiten müssen einige wenige Kunstwerke der SAMMLUNG SCHROTH vorerst als nicht zugänglich gelten.

Zu diesen zählen auch einige ganz frühe Erwerbungen.

Das früheste greifbare Ankaufsdatum liegt im September 1981, allerdings ohne sicher zuzuordnendes Kunstwerk.

Die Sammlungsnummer #001 steht somit stellvertretend für ein Konvolut von Arbeiten, die sehr früh erworben wurden, in der SAMMLUNG SCHROTH auch vorhanden sind, aber nicht sicher definiert werden können.

Even after thorough research all round, a small number of artworks in the SCHROTH COLLECTION must be considered as inaccessible for the time being.

These also include some very early acquisitions. The earliest concrete purchase date lies in September 1981, but no work of art can be attributed to that date with any certainty. In den letzten 50 Jahren hat Daniel Buren die Kunstwelt durch unvergessliche künstlerische Eingriffe, kontroverse kritische Texte, Denkanstöße gebende Kunstprojekte im öffentlichen Raum und die enge Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern unterschiedlichster Generationen bereichert. Im Verlaufe seiner Karriere hat Buren Kunstwerke geschaffen, die die Beziehung zwischen Kunst und den sie begleitenden Strukturen problematisieren. In den frühen 1960er Jahren hat er eine radikale Form der Konzeptkunst entwickelt, die er „Nullpunkt der Malerei“ nannte, die gleichzeitig die Reduktion der Mittel und die Beziehung zwischen Infrastruktur und Medium thematisierte. 1965 begann er, mit 8,7 cm breiten Längsstreifen zu arbeiten, die ihm als Ausgangspunkt für die Frage dienten, was Malerei ist, wie sie präsentiert wird und, weiter gefasst, in welchem physischen und sozialen Umfeld der Künstler arbeitet.

Burens Interventionen werden stets In situ geschaffen: Sie machen sich den Raum, in dem sie präsentiert werden, zueigen und gestalten ihn farbig. Sie sind kritische Instrumente, die unser Sehen und unsere Wahrnehmung hinterfragen und untersuchen, wie Raum genutzt, anverwandelt und in seinem sozialen und physischen Charakter sichtbar gemacht werden kann.

In seiner Arbeit findet das Leben seinen Weg in die Kunst, während die autonome Kunst sich wiederum mit dem Leben verbinden kann.

Daniel Buren wurde 1938 in BoulogneBillancourt, Frankreich, geboren. Große Retrospektiven seiner Arbeit wurden im Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brüssel, Belgien (2016); im Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City, NY, USA (2005) und im Centre Pompidou, Paris, Frankreich (2002) gezeigt.

Daniel Buren has punctuated the past 50 years of art with unforgettable interventions, controversial critical texts, thoughtprovoking public art projects and engaging collaborations with artists from different generations. Throughout his career Buren has created artworks that complicate the relationship between art and the structures that frame it. In the early 1960s, he developed a radical form of Conceptual Art, a “degree zero of painting” as he called it, which played simultaneously on an economy of means and the relationship between the support and the medium. In 1965 he began using his 8.7cm-wide vertical stripes as the starting point for research into what painting is, how it is presented and, more broadly, the physical and social environment in which an artist works. All of Buren’s interventions are created ‘in situ’, appropriating and coloring the spaces in which they are presented. They are critical tools addressing questions of how we look and perceive, and the way space can be used, appropriated, and revealed in its social and physical nature. In his work life finds its way into art, while autonomous art is able to reconnect with life.

Daniel Buren was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France in 1938. He has been the subject of major retrospectives at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Belgium (2016); the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City, NY, USA (2005) and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, France (2002).

Recent solo exhibitions include Museo Espacio, Aguascalientes, Mexico (2016); Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK (2014); Musée d‘Art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg, France (2014); and the Centre Pompidou-Metz, France (2013). Buren has exhibited in the Venice

Letzthin wurde er mit der raumbezogenen Gestaltung der Monumenta 2012 im Pariser Grand Palais beauftragt.

Biennale, Italy more than ten times and was awarded the Golden Lion for his French Pavilion in 1986. That same year, he produced his first and most controversial public commission, The Two Plateaux, for the main courtyard of the Palais-Royal in Paris, France. In 2007, he received the Praemium Imperiale for Painting from Japan. Most recently, he was selected for the site specific Monumenta 2012 commission at the Grand Palais in Paris, France.

Daniel Buren realisierte international zahlreiche temporäre und permanente Installationen im öffentlichen Raum, ebenso in situ-Arbeiten für Institutionen wie das Palais Royal, Paris. Nach eigenen Angaben wurden seine Kunstwerke in über 2600 Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen gezeigt, u.a. in der Kunsthalle Baden-Baden 2011, im Guggenheim Museum in New York 2005, im Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris 2002 und im Toyko Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo 1989. Mehrfach nahm er an der dOCUMENTA und der Biennale di Venezia sowie weiteren bedeutenden Großausstellungen teil. 2012 bespielte er im Rahmen der MONUMENTA das Grand Palais in Paris mit der monumentalen in situ-Arbeit „Excentrique(s)“. Daniel Burens Arbeiten finden sich in bedeutenden öffentlichen Sammlungen, u.a. im Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst, Antwerpen, im Musée d‘Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, in der Tate Modern, London, im National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo und im Museo Guggenheim de Arte Moderno y Contemporaneo, Bilbao.

Internationally, Daniel Buren has realised numerous temporary and permanent installations in public space, as well as in situ works for institutions such as the Palais Royal, Paris.

According to the artist himself, his artworks have been shown in more than 2,600 solo and group exhibitions, incl. at Kunsthalle Baden-Baden 2011, the Guggenheim Museum in New York 2005, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris 2002, and Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo 1989.

He has participated in the dOCUMENTA and the Biennale di Venezia several times, as well as in other important, large-scale exhibitions. In 2012, in the context of the MONUMENTA, he utilized the Grand Palais in Paris for his monumental in situ piece “Excentrique(s)”. Daniel Buren‘s works can be found in key public collections such as the Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst, Antwerp, the Musée d‘Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Tate Modern, London, in the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Museo Guggenheim de Arte Moderno y Contemporaneo, Bilbao.

Die in Gouache und Bleistift auf Papier gefertigte Arbeit ‘Untitled’ (2009) besteht aus rechteckigen Blöcken in matten Farben, die von einem zentralen Punkt ausstrahlen.

Im Verlauf mehrerer Jahre habe ich etwa dreißig Kreis-Bilder gefertigt. Sie alle haben etwas gemeinsam, eine Familienähnlichkeit, aber in ihrer Machart gibt es eine Reihe von Unterschieden. Durch eine lose Systematik verbunden, entstanden alle nach gewissen Regeln der Bildschöpfung.

Einige waren eher systematisch, andere eher intuitiv. Bei einigen mischte ich für jeden Farbblock eine neue Farbe. Manchmal nutzte ich den Zufall – indem ich an einem Glücksrad drehte – um Größe und Farbe der Blöcke festzulegen. Ich wollte herausfinden, ob diese Unterschiede nach Fertigstellung der Arbeit wahrnehmbar waren oder nicht.

‘Untitled’ (2009) is made of gouache and pencil on paper and consists of rectangular blocks of flat colour radiating from a central point. I made about thirty circle paintings over a few years. They all had something in common, a family resemblance, but there were a number of differences in how they were made.

Loosely systematic, they each used rules for generating the image. Some were more systematic, others more intuitive.

For some, I mixed a new colour for each block. Sometimes chance, through spinning a wheel, was used to determine the size and colour of the blocks. I was interested in how apparent or not these differences were, once the pieces were finished.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit habe ich versucht, eine ausgewogene Komposition, gleichermaßen regelmäßig wie unregelmäßig, zu schaffen, indem ich die Rechtecke abwechselnd Viertel und Fünftel des Kreises markieren ließ. So entwickelte sich eine Art Puzzle, in dem ich versuchte, so viel Bildraum wie möglich auszufüllen, wobei ich die jeweils verbliebenen passenden Lücken suchte und dabei die Viertel- und Fünftel-Regel anwandte.

In this piece I was trying to build up a balanced composition, of regularity and irregularity, by making the rectangles alternately mark quarters and fifths of the circle. This developed into a kind of puzzle, that of trying to fill as much of the space as possible, looking for the remaining appropriate gaps, whilst using the quarters and fifths rule.

In den Bildern von Martin Gerwers gibt es keine Formen. Blickt man auf eine Linie, eine Farbe, eine Fläche, so findet man an ihnen keinen Halt, gleitet zu anderen weiter und kombiniert sie in wechselnden Konstellationen. Die formalen Elemente entwickeln keine für sich erfassbare Identität, sie »stehen« nicht in Ruhe vor Augen – als „konkrete“ Substanz. Das gilt bereits für die Gemälde der 90er Jahre mit ihren linienhaft-dünnen Streifen und ihren vom Bildrand wie abgeschnittenen Farbbahnen. Noch mehr gilt es für die in den Raum gefalteten, spitzwinkligen Farbflächen, die sich dreidimensional aus dem frontalen Gegenüber herauswinden und dennoch Bilder bleiben – nur ohne frontale Ansichtsseite.

Diese Unfixierbakeit gilt schließlich ebenso für die unbetitelte weiße Fläche in der Sammlung Schroth, deren Diagonale mit zwei farbigen „Linien“ angegeben ist, die keine Linien sind, sondern eher schmale Dreiecke, die man jedoch nicht als Flächen wahrnimmt. Sieht man genau hin, so handelt es sich auch nicht um eine Diagonale, sondern man stellt sich eher die Drehung einer gedachten Diagonallinie vor. Nichts steht fest. Die weiße Grundfläche ist ebenfalls nicht eindeutig, sondern scheint durch leichte Farbschatten unterteilt, obwohl die Fläche einheitlich bleibt.

Die Werke von Martin Gerwers sind in extremer Weise auf die Reaktionen des Betrachters angewiesen: Sie fordern sein Sehen heraus. Was man sieht, bleibt einem nicht gegenüber; ein bloßes Betrachten ist unmöglich. Alles ist Gespanntheit, überraschende Konfrontierung, Unterscheidung und Verbindung. Die Farben, Flächen und Trennungen „scheinen auf“ als weitertreibende Kräfte, aber auch als Widerstände und Aufhebungen der Orientierung.

There are no forms in Martin Gerwers‘s paintings. When looking at a line, a colour, an area, we are unable to gain any purchase, but glide on to others, combining them into changing constellations.

The formal elements do not develop any tangible identity, they never »stand« calmly before our eyes – as “concrete” substance. This was the case already in the paintings dating from the 90s, with their thin stripes like lines and bands of colour seemingly cut from the image‘s edge. It is all the more true of the sharpangled fields of colour folded into space, which turn out three-dimensionally from the vis-à-vis perspective and yet still remain paintings – merely without a frontal aspect.

Ultimately, this inability to become fixed is also true of the untitled white surface in the Schroth Collection, the diagonal of which is provided by two coloured “lines”: however, these are not actually lines but more narrow triangles, which we do not perceive as flat planes. Looking very carefully, it is not a diagonal, either: more like the turn of an imagined diagonal line. Nothing at all is fixed. Nor is the basic white area unambiguous, but seems to be divided by slightly different colour shades, although the overall area remains unified.

Martin Gerwers‘s works are greatly dependent on the viewer‘s reactions: they challenge his vision. What we see does not stay opposite us; simple contemplation is impossible. Everything is tension, surprising confrontation, distinction and connection. The colours, areas and divisions “manifest” as driving forces, but also as barriers to and dissolutions of our orientation. What was part of a calm balance suddenly enters into aggressive

Sie besteht nicht in dem, was man ansieht, sondern im Fazit der wechselnden Sehtätigkeiten, in der Re-Produktion des Gesehenen durch das verbindende Sehen. Das Bild wird – ansatzweise – zu einem inneren Zustand.

The painting destroys itself as a composition vis-à-vis the plane. But inasmuch as the viewer enters repeatedly into its changing fields of tension, a context, a unity does gradually emerge. It does not consist in whatever we are looking at, but in the outcome of our various viewing activities, in the re-production of what is seen by our connnecting vision.

The painting becomes – to a degree – an inner state. As Martin Gerwers says: “It leads to the ultimate vanishing point.”

Bosse Sudenburg wurde 1975 mit dem bürgerlichen Namen Lasse Brandt in Magdeburg geboren. Einschneidende Erfahrung seiner Kindheit und Jugend ist der Zusammenbruch der DDR 1989/90, die damit einhergehende soziale Dekonstruktion und der Werteverlust im Tausch gegen ein neues Heilsversprechen auf Glück und Freiheit. Sein künstlerischer Werdegang beginnt 1996 mit der Aufnahme eines Kunst- und Kulturgeschichtestudiums in Leipzig, durch das er bereits einen analytischen und kritischen Blick auf die Kunst und deren gesellschaftliche Bedingtheiten entwickelt.

Durch den Kontakt mit anderen Künstlern, insbesondere der Künstlergruppe „Ramon Haze“, rückt das Studium jedoch zugunsten der eigenen künstlerischen Praxis in den Hintergrund und er beginnt 1999 Experimentelle Filmgestaltung und Freie Kunst bei Stan Douglas und Heinz Emigholz an der Universität der Künste in Berlin zu studieren.

Bosse Sudenburg was born in Magdeburg in 1975, as Lasse Brandt. The formative experience of his childhood and adolescence was the collapse of East Germany in 1989/90, the social deconstruction that accompanied it and the loss of value(s) involved in the exchange for a new promise of salvation in happiness and freedom. His development as an artist commenced in 1996, when he began to study art history and cultural studies in Leipzig; this would already lead him to develop an analytical and critical perspective on art and the societal conditions to which it is subject. Nonetheless, through his contact with other artists, particularly with the group ‘Ramon Haze’, his studies were relegated to the background in favour of his own artistic practice. In 1999 he began to study experimental film and fine art under Stan Douglas and Heinz Emigholz at the UdK (Berlin University of the Arts.

Bereits in seinen frühen Videoperformances spielen die Frage nach der Auffassung und der Funktion von Kunst, nach der Entmaterialisierung des kreativen Objekts sowie die Auseinandersetzung mit dem künstlerischen Selbstverständnis eine wichtige Rolle.

Die Auflösung der Autorenschaft, wie sie auch „Ramon Haze“ praktizierten, und die Dekonstruktion des Künstlermythos nach dem geistigen Übervater Marcel Duchamp, später auch im Sinne Andy Warhols, sind Initialzündung für die Schaffung des eigenen Alter Egos „Bosse Sudenburg“.

Questions regarding the concept and function of art as well as the dematerialisation of the creative object and the exploration of artists’ self-concept already played an important role in his early video performances. The dismantling of authorship, which was also practised by ‘Ramon Haze’, and the deconstruction of the myth of the artist – in the spirit of founding father Marcel Duchamp and later also in the sense of Andy Warhol – were the initial spark that set off the creation of his own alter ego ‘Bosse Sudenburg’.

Vor dem Hintergrund der Jahrtausendwende vollzieht der Künstler auf zwei Ebenen eine Identitätsfindung: In einem Videointerview werden Elemente der eigenen Biographie zu fiktiven Selbstporträts arrangiert, in denen der Künstler gleichzeitig Objekt und Subjekt vor und hinter der Kamera ist. Während im Film „Me myself and I“ die persönliche und soziale Verortung stattfindet, markiert „Das letzte Einhorn“ die künstlerische Positionierung. Hier zeichnet der Künstler mit dem Stift an der Stirn in einem Raum eine durchgängige Horizontlinie als Sinnbild für die Dialektik unseres Weltgefüges, während ein Gedicht die Thematik assoziativ umreist. Im Film tritt der Künstler als Subjekt zurück. Es ist nur der Stift zu sehen und das Kratzen desselben beim Ziehen von links nach rechts zu hören, während das Gedicht am unteren Bildrand als Textband von rechts nach links abläuft.

Before the backdrop of the turn of the millennium, the artist realised the invention of his identity on two levels: in a video interview, elements of his own biography are arranged into a fictional self-portrait in which the artist is simultaneously object and subject before and behind the camera.

While his personal and social localisation occurs in the film Me myself and I, the film Das letzte Einhorn (The last unicorn) marks out his artistic position. Here the artist uses the marker attached to his forehead to draw a continuous horizon line inside a room – a symbol for the dialectical structure of our world – while a poem outlines this theme associatively.In the film the artist has withdrawn as a subject.

Only the marker can be seen and only its scratching heard as it moves along from left to right, while the text of the poem scrolls across the lower edge of the image from right to left.

Dort entsteht auch der Film„TheTotalMake-OverOfSelf-StorageDeLuxe“ für seinen Meisterschülerabschluss 2007. Ernüchtert von der Realität der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse in den USA und mit der Erkenntnis über die Willkür linearer Erzählungen, denen augenscheinlich eine disparate Wirklichkeit gegenüber steht, entstehen unter dem Titel „TheNewYorkPerformances“ weitere Videoarbeiten.

While studying at the UdK Bosse Sudenburg received the 2005 NICA grant and, in 2006, an additional grant from the DAAD to work in New York. There he also created the film TheTotalMakeOverOfSelf-StorageDeLuxe as his thesis work to complete his master-pupil programme in 2007. Disillusioned by the reality of the social conditions in the US and having recognised the arbitrariness of linear narratives in the face of an obviously disparate reality, he created additional video works under the title TheNewYorkPerformances.

Dabei verweisen sie auf Prozesse, die auf die Zunahme an Komplexität unserer Lebenswirklichkeit mit Akronymisierung und steigender Abstraktion reagieren.

Sudenburgs Methode diese Prozesse sichtbar zu machen, besteht dabei darin, die Reduzierung und Vereinfachung von Bedeutungen, Funktionen und Zusammenhängen nochmals zu betonen und so auf ihre Symbolhaftigkeit zu verweisen.

Mit einem Mal erscheinen diese dichotomisch plausibel und absurd zugleich.

His video works and also his drawings, objects and installations were created on the basis of a performative and conceptual approach. They also point to processes which respond to the growingly complex reality of our lives through acronymisation and increasing abstraction. Sudenburg’s method for visualising these processes consists in re-emphasising the reduction and simplification of meanings, functions and relationships, thus drawing attention to their symbolic nature. They suddenly appear dichotomously plausible and absurd at the same time.

Immer wieder wird in seinen Arbeiten das Produkthafte der Kunst und die Überhöhung des Künstlers in Frage gestellt, indem die Kunstobjekte gleichzeitig mit der hochglanzpolierten Ästhetik der Werbe- und Modeindustrie spielen und die Inszenierung des Künstlers, wie sie der Markt verlangt, selbst als Arbeit präsentiert wird. So wird beispielsweise in der Wandmalerei „Thank you for shopping with us“ der kundenbindende Dankessatz aus der Shoppingmall in den Galerieraum übertragen und macht letzteren ebenfalls als Marktplatz sichtbar. Thus, for example, in the wall painting Thank you for shopping with us, this shopping-centre expression of gratitude aimed at fostering customer loyalty is transferred into the gallery space, so that the latter can also be seen as a market place. At his first solo exhibition the artist staged himself in the form of a Christian icon in the self-portrait Dove. The (Famous) Bosse Sudenburg Rehearsal shows the costume of the ostensibly authentic artist presented as though in a boutique. In the competition for recognition and success, artists

Im Jahr 2008 hatte Bosse Sudenburg u.a. eine Einzelausstellung bei Ferreraprojects in London und nahm an Ausstellungen auf der ICA London, bei Kling & Bang in Reykjavik, der Marktgalerie in Glasgow sowie dem Kunstverein in Rügen teil. 2009 wird seine Einzelausstellung „The Anniversary Show“ zunächst in der Galerie Metro und im Anschluss auf der Messe Volta NY gezeigt. Dort scheiterte die öffentliche Präsentation des „Burning Barrels“ vor der Kunstmesse, die sich mitten in Manhattan gegenüber des Empire State Buildings befand, an einer letzten Genehmigung der Behörden.

Steht das Bild des brennenden Ölfasses spätestens seit dem Kino der 1980er Jahre als populäre Ikone für die Armut in den Ghettos amerikanischer Großstädte, beschwor das Bild vor dem Hintergrund der damaligen Finanzkrise sowie der global drohenden Energiekrise Visionen einer nahen Zukunft herauf, die sich angesichts der Unruhen in den letzten Jahren bereits bewahrheitet haben. Auch der enthaltene Kommentar zur Lage der Gegenwartskunst und der Realität der Geldströme, die in den Kunstmarkt investiert werden – hier mit dem Fingerzeig auf die Ölstaaten und ihre Kunstsammlungen – macht das Ready-Made zu weit mehr als einer sozialen Plastik im Kunstdiskurs.

In 2008 Bosse Sudenburg’s exhibitions included a solo show at Ferreira Projects in London, and he took part in exhibitions at the ICA London, Kling & Bang in Reykjavik, the Market Gallery in Glasgow and the Kunstverein Rügen. His 2009 solo exhibition The Anniversary Show was first shown at Galerie Metro and then at the Volta NY art fair. There he was unable to publicly present the Burning Barrels in front of the fair – held in the middle of Manhattan, opposite the Empire State Building – due to a lack of final approval by authorities. Since the cinema of the 1980s, at the latest, the image of a fire in an oil barrel has provided a popular icon representing the poverty in the ghettos of major American cities.

However, in the context of the later period’s financial crisis and threat of a global energy crisis, this image conjured up visions of a near future – visions which have already proven true in the face of the turmoil of recent years.

The film’s commentary on the state of contemporary art and the reality of the flow of money into art-market investments (here, the finger is pointed at the oil states and their art collections) makes this ready-made into much more than a social sculpture within the discourse on art.

Die Arbeit „IF/THEN“, die aus dieser Serie in der Sammlung Schroth vertreten ist, geht noch einen Schritt weiter. Es handelt sich um die beiden Grundelemente eines Kausalsatzes ohne vorgegebenen Inhalt. Hier werden keine Sätze oder Halbsätze mehr proklammiert, sondern es verbleibt die absolute Reduzierung mit einem maximal offenen Bedeutungshorizont, der beliebig, individuell und kontextabhängig gefüllt werden kann. Man stelle sich vor: „IF/THEN“ vor der Europäischen Zentralbank oder vor einem Flüchtlingsheim und so fort. Ihren Ursprung hat die Arbeit in der Erfahrung mit „BASIC“, einer der ersten Programmiersprachen, die deutlich macht, inwiefern die digitale Revolution eng mit der Akronymisierung und Sinnentleerung des physischen Alltags verbunden ist.

In der virtuellen Welt lässt sich über die Befehle „if“ und „then“ ein ganzes Universum kreieren und alle Vorstellungen werden erfüllt, während deren Realisierung in der realen Welt scheitert und das Einlösen solcher Versprechen permanent gebrochen wird.

These ostensible bits of superficial wisdom are true in any case: not because they are correct but on account of their endless repetition. These slogans thus anticipate the contemporary concept of a ‘post-factual’ truth based on the number of hits on Google or the frequency of retweets on Twitter.

The work IF/THEN, which represents this series in the Schroth Collection, goes a step further. It deals with the two fundamental elements of a causal sentence without any defined content.

Here it is no longer sentences or sentence fragments that are proclaimed; instead, what remains is the absolute reduction, featuring a maximally open semantic horizon which can be filled at will, individually and depending on the context. Imagine IF/THEN placed in front of the European Central Bank or a refugee shelter and so on. The work’s origins lie in experiences with ‘BASIC’, which was one of the first programming languages and which makes it clear how closely linked the digital revolution is with acronymisation and the voiding of meaning in physical everyday life. In the virtual world a whole universe can be created through the commands ‘if’ and ‘then’ and all expectations fulfilled; however, its realisation in the real world fails and promises of this kind are constantly broken and remain unfulfilled.

Als Schlussfolgerung befindet sich der Künstler Bosse Sudenburg seit 2012 in einer künstlerischen und visuellen Abstinenz. Aus der Perspektive einer durch und durch konzeptuell angelegten künstlerischen Tätigkeit, vollzieht sich diese in letzter Konsequenz, indem sie keine realen Produkte mehr hervorbringt.

Heiner Thiel macht echt coolen Minimalismus. Heiner Thiel aus Deutschland macht richtig einen drauf. Zerbrich dir nicht den Kopf darüber, ob er nun Bildhauer oder Maler ist. Es spielt keine Rolle. Er ist beides.

Er ist keins von beidem. Hier zeigt er Reliefs, um es technisch zu formulieren.

Er zeigt dünne, quadratische Stücke aus eloxiertem Aluminium in all diesen coolen Farben. Er biegt die Ecken nach oben.

Wenn es doch nur so einfach wäre. Das Eloxieren erzeugt kräftige, sexy Farbtöne; die Formen sind mathematisch berechnete Segmente einer perfekten Kugel. Keines der Stücke ist jedoch quadratisch; sie alle haben sich weich wölbende Kanten, die sich den gebogenen Ecken entsprechend krümmen, sodass sie quadratisch wirken.

Ganz schön verzwickt, was?

Er hypnotisiert durch Form gewordene Farbe. Die Arbeiten sind also quadratisch, aber nur in der Wahrnehmung. Hat es so etwas schon gegeben? Gibt es etwas, das rund aussieht, aber in Wirklichkeit gerade Kanten hat? Die Gedanken beginnen unendlich um dieses Rätsel zu kreisen.

Heiner Thiels Kunst fasziniert, sie fasziniert sehr. Es ist erstaunlich, wie es ihm gelingt, Farbe und Raum verschmelzen zu lassen.

Die Farben entstehen durch die Art und Weise, in der das Aluminium eloxiert wird.

Auf jeden Fall nimmt das Viertelzoll-Quadrat mit gebogenen Ecken und gewölbten Kanten ein chemisches Bad, ein Eloxierbad.

Je nach Kombination der Chemikalien und Dauer des Bades entstehen unterschiedliche Farben. Diese hauchdünnen Oberflächen haben eine absolut einheitliche Farbe und ihre Textur ist weich wie ein Babypopo aus Aluminium.

Heiner Thiel does chill Minimalism. Heiner Thiel kicks it live from Deutschland. Don't go around scratching your head trying to decide if he's a sculptor or a painter. It doesn't matter. He's both. He's neither. He's showing reliefs here, if you have to get technical.

He has thin, square pieces of anodized aluminum in all these cool colors. He's bending up the corners. If it were only that simple. The anodizing makes the bright, sexy tones and the forms are all mathematically based segments of a perfect sphere.

None of them are square, however; they all have softly swelling edges that curve in correspondence to the curling corners to make them look square. It's tricky huh?

He is a hypnotist of shaped color. So they're square, but only in perception. What else is like that? Is there round-looking stuff which is really straight-edged? This line of wondering begins playing infinitely in the back of your mind.

You're being mesmerized by the art of Heiner Thiel. And it's pretty mesmerizing.

He succeeds admirably at his goal of fusing color and space. The colors are derived from the way the aluminum is anodized.

Anyway, the quarter-inch, corner-curled square of curved edges takes a chemical bath, an anodizing bath, and depending upon the combination of chemicals and time in the tub, different colors occur. These wafer-thin surfaces are perfectly uniform in color, and the texture is smooth as an aluminum baby's butt.

Some are shiny metallic, and some are matte flat. But they all pulsate on the white wall, in the ambient light of the room, like great saucers for light, immune

Douglas Allsop, geboren 1943 in London, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Er beschäftigt sich mit einer minimalistischen und monochromatischen Maschinenästhetik und stellt seit den 1960er Jahren international aus. Er ist emeritierter Professor an der University of the Arts London. (Übers.)

Niklas von Bartha

Niklas von Bartha ist ein aus der Schweiz stammender Galeriemitinhaber und Kurator, der in Großbritannien lebt und arbeitet.

Nach einem kurzen Studium arbeitete er bei einem Auktionshaus sowie bei Kunsthändlern und -galerien, darunter die schwedische Galerie Nordenhake. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Daniela von Bartha gründete er dann im Jahr 2000 seine eigene Galerie in London. (Übers.)

Swiss born gallery co-owner and curator Niklas von Bartha lives and works in Britain. Following his brief studies he worked for an auction house, art-dealers and galleries including the Swedish gallery Nordenhake, before setting up his own gallery in London with his wife Daniela von Bartha in 2000.

Hannah Beck-Mannagetta

Hannah Beck-Mannagetta studierte Kulturarbeit, Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaften in Potsdam und Berlin. 2007 Mitbegründerin und bis 2016 Vorsitzende des Vereins JungeMeister.net. Co-Direktorin der Galerie Metro, Berlin (2008–2013). Seither als freie Autorin und Kuratorin mit Fokus auf Ausstellungs- und interdisziplinären Vermittlungsformaten tätig, u.a. für DDB Stockholm, Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, Leinemann-Stiftung für Bildung und Kunst; 2015/16 „Über die Unmöglichkeit des Seins“, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Wien (mit Lena Fließbach), “Never shown on Purpose”, CIRCLE1, Berlin (2016/17).

Hannah Beck-Mannagetta studied arts management & cultural work, art history and cultural studies in Potsdam and Berlin. Dr. Céline Berchiche

Dr. Céline Berchiches Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf der Wiederaufnahme und Verbreitung von geometrischer Abstraktion in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, auf den Avantgarden der 1930er Jahre und auf der Historiografie digitaler Kunst. Sie ist Dozentin im Fachbereich Kunst an der Universität Valenciennes, wo sie Masterstudenten in Kunsttheorie, Geschichte der modernen und zeitgenössischen Kunst und Geschichte der digitalen Künste unterrichtet. In Verbindung mit ihren Lehrtätigkeiten arbeitet sie mit Pariser Galerien (Galerie Denise René, Galerie White Project, Galerie Bertrand Grimont), Museen und Zentren für zeitgenössische Kunst als Kuratorin oder Kunsthistorikerin zusammen. Dr Céline Berchiche‘s primary research areas are the revival and diffusion of geometric abstract art in the second half of the twentieth century, the avant-gardes of the 1930s, and the historiography of digital art. She is a lecturer in the Arts department at the University of Valenciennes where she teaches theory of art, history of modern and contemporary art, and history of digital arts to Master‘s students. In conjunction with her teaching activities she collaborates with Parisian galleries (Denise René Gallery, White Project Gallery, Bertrand Grimont Gallery), museums and contemporary centres as curator or art historian.

Dr. Holger Birkholz

Dr. Holger Birkholz (geb. 1968), Kunsthistoriker, 2002 Promotion, 2004–2014 Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden.

2014 Einreichung der Habilitationsschrift zum Thema „Das Eigenleben der Plastik“ an der TU Dresden. Kurator im Bereich zeitgenössische Kunst, schwerpunktmäßig Medienkunst, Betreuung der Ausstellung „Monitoring“ mit Medieninstallationen zum Kasseler Dokumentarfilm- und Videofest seit 2000. Er war Vorstandsmitglied beim Kasseler Kunstverein und Kurator der Cynetart in Dresden Hellerau. Beiträge u.a. in Katalogen des Migros Museum Zürich, des Museum Ludwig Köln und der Albertina Wien.

Dr Holger Birkholz (b.1968) is an art historian; he earned his PhD in 2002 and was a research associate at the HfBK Dresden (Dresden Academy of Fine Arts) from 2004 to 2014. In 2014 he submitted his habilitation thesis Das Eigenleben der Plastik (The independent life of sculpture) to the TU Dresden. He has worked as curator in the field of contemporary art, with a focus on new media; since 2000 he has supervised the exhibition ‘Monitoring’, featuring media installations at the Kassel documentary film and video festival. He was a member of the board of the Kasseler Kunstverein and curator of Cynetart in the Hellerau area of Dresden. He has contributed to catalogues including those of the Migros Museum in Zurich, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Albertina in Vienna.(Transl.)

Lucette ter Borg

Lucette ter Borg, geboren 1962 in Amsterdam, studierte Slawistik und historische Pädagogik an der Universität Amsterdam.

Sie arbeitete als Kunstkritikerin für „NRC Handelsblad“ und „De Volkskrant“; derzeit ist sie Chefredakteurin für Kunst und Kultur bei der Wochenzeitung „Vrij Nederland“.

2005 wurde sie mit dem Geertjan-Lubberhuizen-Preis für das beste niederländische Debüt ausgezeichnet.

Lucette ter Borg was born in Amsterdam in 1962 and earned a degree in Slavic studies and historical pedagogy at the University of Amsterdam. She has worked as an art critic for the NRC Handelsblad and De Volkskrant and is currently the head editor for art and culture at the weekly Vrij Nederland. Susan Cross

Susan Cross ist Kuratorin für Bildende Kunst am MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst) in North Adams, Massachusetts (USA). Dort organisiert sie seit 2006 eine Reihe großer Ausstellungen mit Künstlern wie Simon Starling, Katharina Grosse, Richard Nonas, Liz Deschenes oder Liz Glynn. Ebenso realisierte sie die erste museale Werkschau von Spencer Finch und veröffentlichte seine erste Monografie. Früher war sie Kuratorin am Solomon R. As a Curator of Visual Arts at the MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) in North Adams, Massachusetts (US) since 2006, Susan Cross has organised a string of major exhibitions including artists such as Simon Starling, Katharina Grosse, Richard Nonas, Liz Deschenes and Liz Glynn. Manja Fahlisch

Manja Fahlisch hat ihr Studium der Kunstgeschichte an der Humboldt Universität zu Berlin Kunstgeschichte mit einer Magisterarbeit über „Lebende Bilder in der Fotografie des 19. Jahrhunderts“ abgeschlossen.

Nach studentischen Nebentätigkeiten in Galerien und Auktionshäusern war sie von 2015 bis 2016 Volontärin im Mies van der Rohe Haus. Seit Anfang 2017 leitet sie die Klax Kinderkunstgalerie im Prenzlauer Berg, die eingebunden ist in die Klax Berlin gGmbH.

Manja Fahlisch completed her degree in art history at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin with a master’s dissertation on ‘Lebende Bilder in der Fotografie des 19. Jahrhunderts’ (Living images in nineteenth-century photography). After student part-time work at galleries and auction houses, she completed a professional trainee programme at the Mies van der Rohe Haus from 2015 to 2016.

Since the beginning of 2017, she has headed Klax Kinderkunstgalerie, which is a part of Klax Berlin gGmbH and is located in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg. (Transl.)

Dr Georg Jappe (1936–2007) was a German artist, writer and journalist. He studied theatre studies and philosophy in Frankfurt am Main, Paris and Vienna and earned his PhD in 1961. He worked as a radio-play editor for the German broadcaster WDR and as a literary and art critic, including freelance work for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Die Zeit. Beginning in 1975 he taught art and literature at Essen’s Gesamthochschule and at Hamburg’s HFBK (Hamburg university of visual art). From 1979 to 2001 he was professor of art theory at the HFBK. Dr. Wolfhard Petrikat (1942–2016), Kunsthistoriker, 1988 Promotion über „Land Art, Landschaftsverpackung, Landschaftsanalyse.
