SEPTEMBER

CHARLESTON, SC

ESCAPE THE ORDINARY

Hello, September. We’ve been waiting for you. Maybe not with open arms but certainly a sigh of relief. September in the south always makes us appreciate breathing again. The humidity can make a short walk around the corner feel like we walked a mile in damp, warm clothing that we took out of the dryer too soon. Inhale hot, exhale hot. So we celebrate Fall here, especially the change in the air. We love being able to sit on the porch swing with a glass of wine and some neighbors without mopping away sweat or swatting mosquitoes. Every season has its benefits, and they seem to be just long enough for us to be grateful for them and then be replaced by new ones. Extra layers. Boots. Jeans. Red wine and maybe even a batch of chili by the end of the month. It is almost like time stands still during the summer and then picks up right where it left off. Routine becomes the norm. Alarm clocks are once again on duty. We push ourselves a little harder on our bike rides, our runs beg us for one more mile over the beautiful bridge and our yoga classes are once again mat to mat full. Inhale cool, exhale cool. Rooftop Happy Hours and outdoor festivals are back. And so are we. Let the Fall games begin; we’re more than ready! Cover Art: Jackie Besteman Cover Art: Ali Douglass

Slow your mind. Visualize distractions floating away on a cloud... A puffy, cumulus cloud. Not a rain cloud. It hasn’t rained for months. We’re in the middle of a 7-year drought. I need to change my Brita water filter. Relax your body. Trivial worries waft away… Trivial worries waft away on a cool blue wave, rolling past islands and seaweed and...the Great Pacific Ocean garbage patch. I should definitely stop using straws. Focus on your breath. How long have I been sitting here? Three minutes? 14 months? Be still. My head itches. Should I scratch it? Now my entire torso itches. What is this madness? Inhale slowly. What if I stood up and screamed right now? And exhale slowly. What? Are they gonna ban me from the Zen Center? Never. That’s so un-zen. Clear away commotion. Okay. Commotion bobs away from me. Like a soft-boiled egg meandering in a bowl of ramen, which reminds me of that Japanese restaurant Kirk took me to on our first date. All he did was talk about how much he liked Mitt Romney and slurp his soup. And his chopstick skills. Ha! Should have known then. Mmm…I could eat. If thoughts distract you, return to your breath. Sitting still is doing nothing for my sciatica. I could leave right now. Just stand up, throw this uncomfortable $50 zafu cushion from Amazon at that silly gong, and bolt. There’s a gelato place across the street… No really, return to your breath. Distractions drift away like a plastic bag blowing in the wind. I should return those sun hats and wedge sandals to TJ Maxx before I miss the window for a refund and have to settle for store credit. $200 worth of stuff I don’t need, can’t afford, and only bought to soothe myself after a self-esteem-crushing afternoon trying on swimsuits. Even my elbows looked fat! Let go of the worries of the day. Okay, I’m back in the ocean. My negativity coasts past me, like a boat. An ocean liner. The Titanic! No, no...I’m terrible at this. Release judgment. I don’t have to be perfect. My impossible standards drift away. On a manatee, a clumsy and imperfect, yet still lovable sea cow. Wait...are they endangered? Inhale serenity. Oh God! I’ve been holding my breath this whole time! Exhale chaos. This kinda feels good. Inhale peace. Regrets fly away from me like a kite soaring in the sky. Like that time Kirk took me on a picnic to celebrate our second anniversary and he brought kites. Fun idea, until our kites got tangled in that oak tree. Stuck. Much like our clashing personalities and opposing views on everything from paint swatches to which was the better version of The Office. Allow cleansing breath to nourish you. Thoughts glide away like a paper airplane, which is what I should have folded those stupid divorce papers into when stupid Kirk handed them to me three days after we returned from that stupid wine country getaway that I stupidly used my last bit of vacation time on so we could celebrate the completion of his stupid book about the pitfalls of the stupid 2012 Romney campaign! And P.S. Kirk, the British version was better! Honor the divinity within yourself. Emotions are chemicals. I’m a walking periodic table of elements, bouncing around on a big planet of chemicals. None of this is real. My anger is a ball of chemical energy. And I’m watching it leave me. In a 2005 Toyota Camry, nearly out of gas, puttering away slowly, like my youth. And dreams. And cheek collagen.

“A l l y o u h a v e t o d o f o r t h e n e x t 6 0 m i n u t e s i s b e r i g h t h e r e .”

Anxiety Disorder: (n) a mental health disorder characterized by excessive worry, irrational fear, compulsive behavior, extreme self-consciousness and at-times debilitating negative thoughts. Breathe: (v) command form of the bodily process of inhalation and exhalation; a reminder to regulate the flow of oxygen in your body. “Go. I don’t want to. You should really go; you know if you don’t go now, you’ll think about it all day. But I’m tired. You should go, you have to go. If you go now, you’ll be able to stop thinking about it. Come on, get going already; you’re wasting time. If you miss that class, your whole day’s ruined. I really don’t want to go. You know you have to go or—” I’ve been asked why I bother paying for yoga classes. “I mean, don’t you know enough by now to just do it on your own?” friends ask. Yes. Sort of. I mean, I do, but the beauty of going to classes is that you don’t have to do anything. Yes, the physical workout is intense and a full 60 or 90-minute session can be excruciating, but you don’t have to think. You just have to follow directions. I like following directions. Inhale, mountain pose. Exhale, forward fold. For someone with a tireless voice in the back of their brain, someone with general anxiety disorder, someone like me, having things planned out can be tantamount to being able to leave the house. Inhale, halfway-lift. Exhale, forward fold. With instructions to follow, there is none of the nagging, “what now, now what?” And, “then what, what if, what now?” My brain so much enjoys. As long as I am on course and have a plan I am accomplishing the things and the voice quiets. Without them I’m at risk of spiraling down, deep into a pit of self-doubt that swallows all the air, leaving me panting, gasping for breath. Inhale, halfway-lift. Exhale, high-to-low plank. If I do yoga on my own two things happen: one, I do not practice for more than half an hour. I just don’t. Time stops between asanas and I swear it’s been 20 minutes when really five have passed. Two, I spend so much time thinking about what I should do next. Inhale, up-dog. Exhale, down-dog. When I practice on my own I am responsible for the plan, the one writing the directions. Trying to follow a plan I’m making up as I go along is too much like the rest of my life to be enjoyable. Inhale through your nose. Exhale, let it go. Anxiety is a curious and energetic creature. It’s like a beaver and a Schnauzer got together for drinks and wound up doing it

22

in the bathroom. Months later a yappy, tenacious beast that gnaws on everything is born. It persistently seeks new things to badger you about: that exchange with a coworker seemed to go well, but he could have been making fun of you; your shirt might be too tight, you should check in every window you pass by or better yet, go buy a new one before you meet that guy for dinner; remember that thing you did five years ago? Yeah, feel shame about that. Inhale, look up. Exhale, travel to the top of your mat. “You’re here. You made it here, that’s the hardest part. All you have to do for the next 60 minutes is be right here. And don’t forget to breathe,” the instructor always says at the start of class. “The most important part of yoga,” she says, “is to breathe.” Inhale, halfway-lift. Exhale, forward fold. I don’t always buy it. I’m there for the movement, for the instruction, for the positions and postures I’d never think of on my own to coax drops and then sprinkles and then entire storms of sweat out of me until rivulets run down my arms, my neck, my legs and for those thoughts—the should have, could have, why didn’t you’s—to run down with them. Inhale, chair pose. But breathing—breath—helps us get through things we wouldn’t think possible. Childbirth, a panic attack, a halffolded-double-bind-arm-balance that threatens to break your spleen. By focusing on your breath, by intentionally controlling the inhales and exhales, the mechanics of pushing and pulling air out and into your lungs morph from reflex to responsibility of the cerebral cortex, the part of our brain connected to attention, perception, and consciousness. Thoughts, pain, and emotions are literally blown away when you breathe with intention. Exhale, forward fold. Inhale, rise up. Exhale, fold down. Inhale, halfway lift. Exhale, low pushup. When your mind rebels against you, turning everyday dalliances into labyrinths of double-meaning and possible missteps, you must learn, and then choose, to trust the part of you that speaks up in your defense. Inhale, up-dog. Exhale, down-dog. The part your breath connects you with. Inhale, look up. Exhale, travel to the top of your mat. Because that’s the part that’s real. Inhale, rise up. Exhale, hands to heart center. So don’t forget to breathe. Namaste.

I N H E R OW N WO R D S

SPENCER GEORGE

Spencer George is a freshman at Barnard College of Columbia University and the founder of the #NOTYOURGIRL campaign, which encourages young girls to embrace their true selves.

I am my own best friend. In a way, I always have been. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always enjoyed spending my time alone—reading, writing, exploring worlds that were entirely imaginary and entirely my own. There was something consolatory about it, about my happiness being entirely dependent upon myself, a freedom in being able to make decisions based on my own preferences. Spending time with myself felt natural, innate; being alone was as effortless as breathing. But humans are social creatures. From the time we are born to the time that we die, we are taught to interact, to build connections, to marry and produce children that will continue our legacies. We are taught that the most enjoyed experiences are those that we are able to share with others; we are taught that we cannot be nearly as happy if we are alone.

I’ve always enjoyed spending my time alone...

As I grew up, society instilled this idea in me more and more: sacrifice aspects of my own happiness in order to become a part of an interactive body. I might never find friends with the same interests and passions as myself, but I would become a part of the social movement, and that was what was most important. I made friends, I lost friends, I stopped spending time alone. And in the process, I gave up many of the things I loved doing most. Aldous Huxley writes that, “if one’s different, one’s bound to be lonely.” I’ve always been different, and for a long time I felt that meant I must be lonely. I couldn’t spend my time writing and being social; it was always going to be an either/or situation, and I knew which side I was expected to choose. It took me years to understand that it didn’t have to be a choice. That there could be a balance—that I could be my own best friend and still have other friends. Valuing my own company most didn’t mean that I couldn’t also value the company of others. I have many friends now, but I am also comfortable taking myself shopping or going out to dinner alone. I am comfortable with myself, and that allows me to be comfortable with being by myself. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that “alone” is not synonymous with “lonely;” there is, and always will be a difference. It’s how great that distance is that’s up to you.

DERMATOLOGY PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

I believe that dermatology is a unique area of medicine that not only affects physical health, but also significantly impacts self-esteem and social interactions. I use the most up-to-date information to manage and treat visible skin, hair, and nail conditions. I find the most joy when I see that the changes a patient has made in his or her skin has significantly increased their self-confidence and self-worth. When I’m not in the clinic, I enjoy spending time outside (with sun-protection!) with my family.

My passion for dermatology began in my youth. I experienced skin issues from a young age, which gave me the compassion and desire to help others with their skin and overall self-confidence. With over ten years of experience as a Physician Assistant at Germain Dermatology, I have learned to utilize my expertise in the field and personal experience to individualize each patient’s treatment. When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, two children Anabelle (age 7) and Brooks (age 5), and Boykin spaniel, Gracie.

O N E H U N D R E D YA R D S

“ I w a s o n p a c e f o r a p e r s o n a l r e c o r d .”

The morning of my third Thunder Road Half Marathon, I caught the light rail uptown with my friend, Kelli. Kelli had spent the night with me in Charlotte and was also running for my sister, Taylor. Earlier that week I’d received a message on my blog from the father of a student at my sister’s school. He and his son Nicholas, who was a year behind my sister and had just started the eighth grade, were running the half marathon. “Neither of us are runners but we are doing it for the challenge,” he wrote. “I mentioned to Nicholas that Taylor did a 5K without stopping and I told him we can’t even think about walking or slowing down before mile three because no matter how ‘tired’ we may be, we need to push through just like Taylor did.” I felt inspired because others still honored my sister, but I also felt sad because, as her peers grew older, they were unintentionally leaving her behind. Though I’d started to see myself as an experienced runner, I couldn’t stop thinking about how little I’d trained for this race. “I’m just going to have fun today,” I said to Kelli as we speedwalked towards the start line against a bitter wind. The words were more for myself than my friend. “No time goal.” When the gun sounded, we inched forward with the others, two specks in a throng of thousands. We walked till the pack leaders burst ahead, making room for everyone else. After what felt like an eternity, we broke free. I said goodbye to my friend and shot ahead, settling into my own pace. I knew right away that things would go better than expected. The air didn’t feel nearly as cold as it had just moments earlier when we’d jogged in place to stay warm, and it felt good when it filled my lungs. Each time I approached a hill, I found an unexpected burst of energy. My head felt clear. I was on pace for a personal record. But after a long climb around mile five, I got winded. I thought about slowing down until I remembered how my blind sister had run part of the same course in her first 5K and never once stopped to walk, even when she fell and scraped her knees. I thought about Nicholas and his dad and my friend Kelli, somewhere on the course running for Taylor, and I didn’t stop. Less than a mile from the finish line, I ran beneath the bridge where, two years earlier, I’d seen a blind man running with a cane. This time I was alone under the bridge, but I could see the image of the blind half marathon runner perfectly in my mind,

and it made me think of my little sister, fighting a demon of a disease at home. As the end of the course came into view, I twisted my left leg. The pain felt so excruciating that I thought I’d torn a muscle. I’d never envisioned crawling across the finish line and didn’t like even the thought. I wanted to sprint, but I was limping. Was this what it was coming down to in the end? I’d given it my best, but my body had hit its limit. In my heart I knew I couldn’t run Batten disease out of Taylor’s life. I knew I couldn’t chase down a cure, no matter how fast I ran. I knew the running was for me. But in that moment, I hated that my best wasn’t good enough. I forgot I was running a race. I hated that our world was falling away beneath us and everything we’d ever known and taken for granted was slipping out of our grasps and my sister was still going to die. But our fight against Batten disease wasn’t a sprint. It was a marathon. And the best distance runners succeed by reserving energy so they’ll be fresh when they have to climb the toughest hills. Elite marathoners know better than to expend all their energy in the first few miles of the race. I had to face Batten disease one day at a time. I’d shaped myself into a distance runner by approaching a long race in small chunks. It was easier to think about running a great two miles—the distance between aid stations. I’d finally started to understand that taking care of myself was just as important as hard work; otherwise, I’d crash and burn before I reached my goal. Similar to stringing together a bunch of strong miles, I needed to string together a bunch of good days. My sudden injury made me angry and Batten disease made me angry, but as more able-bodied runners passed me en route to the finish line, it dawned on me that there was only so much we could do to win the race at hand. It was a tragic situation, and nothing that happened in my life—no matter how wonderful it might be—could ever replace what we’d lost and stood to lose. But a fast runner with a bum leg wasn’t any good to anyone, just like I wasn’t good to anyone when I was in my darkest place. I couldn’t help my sister if I based my survival on my chance of ensuring hers. Somehow, I managed to jog-hop the last one hundred yards of Thunder Road’s 13.1-mile course. When I looked over my shoulder at the clock suspended above the timing mats, I discovered I’d set a new personal record. As I wrapped myself in an aluminum blanket and poured water down my throat, I realized that the pain in my leg was gone.

MEGAN BAXTER

Megan Baxter is a graduate student at Vermont College of Fine Arts, a CrossFit Coach with an armful of tattoos and a pampered mutt named Rosalita Springsteen. She has been writing personal essays since the fourth grade.

INHALE, EXHALE “ I k n o w t h e f e e l i n g o f h a v i n g a l m o s t n o a i r i n m y b o d y .”

I was always being taught to breathe. My father would say ‘inhale,’ and ‘exhale.’ My mother, who taught piano lessons in our living room, would set up her metronome beside my bed; tick, tick, tick, the needle swung back and forth giving me a rhyme to match my ragged breath. The asthma specialist gave me my own peak-flow meter so I could measure the strength of my breathing. I would lock myself in the bathroom and huff into the mouthpiece, hoping for bigger numbers each time. Each of my medication required different types of breathing, holding my breath, or sucking in huge gulps like a thirsty person swallowing water. I know the feeling of having almost no air in my body. One night, when I was five, my fingers turned deep purple. I was shutting down. I was dying. Asthma made me scared of running and swimming. I was allowed to spend recess and gym in the art room or library at school. While I inhaled medication through my nebulizer, I read hungrily. In books, sick kids didn’t stay that way forever; the little boy in the Secret Garden was cured by the lush green of tangled roses outside his estate and in Heidi, the fresh Alpine air helped Clara walk again. I grew and my lungs became stronger gradually, until the cupboard under the bathroom sink was packed with the tubes and equipment I didn’t use anymore. When air comes into the lungs it oxygenates the blood, the tiny cells deep in bronchial tissue work that magic. Each exhale removes carbon dioxide. In and out. Good and bad. Have you ever been afraid to breathe? I used to be terrified of getting out of breath, the feeling of running, or playing kickball, that tightening in the lungs felt just like the start of an attack. My mother tried to teach me ways to control my breathing without medication. She would set me down on the steps of our porch and make me breathe in and out steadily. She gave me a cold glass of water to sip. In and out. I worked my lungs, I steadied my heartbeat, and I learned to catch myself on the edge of panic. But I will always remember the black nights with no air when my lungs felt as small as tea bags. Like the doctors said, my asthma improved as I got older. Between those markers of adolescence, getting my period, wearing my first high heels, slow dancing in the gym with my crush from history class, I began to breathe more naturally. I didn’t have to tell myself in and out. One morning, I laced up my running shoes and headed up the driveway. My legs learned to run, one foot at a time until I was at the end of the neighborhood, slick with sweat, breathing quickly but without fear. I believe in the power of the body, its chemical magic, transforming the world into fuel and spark. Inhale, exhale.

Just breath, the lungs do all the work themselves. By high school, I was running a few miles every morning, around the quiet lakeshore drives of my boarding school. In winter I would wake early and jog on the treadmill. I lifted weights in the bright gym beside the basketball court. I wanted to look good, of course, I was a teenage girl, but there was also an underlying marvel when I ran or went to the gym. I was free. Free from my own body’s limitations. I had learned to breathe. I can’t separate the physical from the spiritual. It seems to me that breath is the thing of mystery, the spark that fuels life. It links us to the world, even to the creation of the universe, inhaling elements that were born deep in space. It connects us to all living beings, trees, ferns, birds, and fish, whose lungs and pores process the same chemicals. Breath connects us; to the people we love, to the places we live and to everything that has breathed before us. You don’t know how lucky you are until that thing is taken from you. When you can’t breathe, you can’t walk or talk, all you can do is survive. I am thankful, everyday, for the air in my bloodstream and for the depth of my lungs. I have constructed a life around breath and I treat my body well. In the morning, I work in the lush garden in our front yard, hoeing or trellising, pruning back tomatoes and lacing bean vines up their support poles. The garden is breathing as well. I knew I had met the man of my dreams when his kiss took my breath away. I spun out into a world full of fireworks the first time our lips touched. He can still make me faint. My body has become a symbol of strength and of breath. What else do we have at the end of the day but blood and muscle, lung and bone? In the gym I coach people. I help them become stronger. They have forgotten their bodies, the simple equations that bind them to the world. Watching them grow, I remember again to breathe. Everything starts out hard, I tell them. One breath in, one breath out. I teach them to link breaths to lifts, to breathe while they run, to catch their breath, head up, and not collapse under the weight of exhaustion. Breath sustains me. It moves me forward. It links me backward, to the darkness and the fear of those nights in my childhood when my body began rationing air, cutting off blood to my fingers and toes, trying to keep itself alive. When I cut with my hoe in the garden I feel the strength of my lungs and the pull of my muscles. Around me the plants are growing and breathing. When I run, or hold a yoga pose, or lift in the gym I am thankful. Body to body with my boyfriend we breathe together, easily, linked by our steady inhalations. Inhale. Exhale. Don’t forget to breathe.

Admitting that we can’t deal with flat tires just became the lamest excuse of all now that there is a bike that has tires that don’t need any pumping and never go flat. SPECIALIZED Alibi Step Through 2017 specialized.com

Enjoying the best line from Paul Yellin’s (chef, Cane Rhum Bar and Caribbean Kitchen) interview with the Rum Gazette. When he was asked to define himself in few words, he said, “I am a rum drinker with a cooking problem.” On that note—we’ll take Jamaican beef patties and an Instant Vacation cocktail; Mount Gay Silver infused with lemongrass and ginger, velvet falernum, lemon juice, orange juice, ginger beer. Friends, East Bay Street just became our new tropical oasis.
