March comes in big, like a lion, and its roars bring sudden big blooms of periwinkle and fuchsia. The azaleas color our world in the South, they hang in there while we’re predicting when the next cold front will arrive, or can we call this spring yet? We bundle up in chilly mornings and shed layers throughout the day as the mercury rises in the afternoon hours. Time to think about that pedicure and open-toed shoes, time to drive home with the sunroof open, time for the pollen and breezy afternoons when the wind whispers, “Spring has sprung.” This is the big time when the summer heat is still weeks away and we can walk the streets without breaking a sweat, stop and pause long enough to see the time lapse of leaves budding on bare trees. The soothsayer’s warning to Julius Caesar, “Beware the Ides of March,” in Shakespeare’s tragedy imbued that date with a sense of foreboding, but it’s just the 15th on the Roman calendar and we prefer to celebrate it as the Romans did— by indulging in wine, song and celebration. This is a time of good hair days, wind whipping our skirts, evenings just chilly enough for a light sweater, time for outdoors, for new buds turned blooms, the bright sky that reminds us of how small we are in this big old world, and the brand new green grass that’s made for lying on your back and looking for shapes in clouds chugging by as the world keeps turning, turning, turning.

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” Charles Dickens

six women, much like our own startup story back in 1994. We talk a lot about appreciating the small things in life, about paying attention to the wind in the trees, stopping to smell the flowers, slowing down; but with this issue we wanted to celebrate the big things that make life so wonderful. This issue is full of big ideas, big dreams, and big happiness. The funny thing about the big picture is that you can pull back and frame your life in the larger perspective, and it makes the little struggles seem so small. As Kurt Vonnegut’s character Billy Pilgrim in Slaughterhouse Five said when he saw the big picture of his own tumultuous life, “everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.” Dream big, readers. Everything is beautiful, the obstacles become so small, and we can

Dear BIG To Go Gods: We understand you’re under a lot of scrutiny these days. But we just have a few things we would like to chat about:

Can we go back to “small,” “medium,” and “large?” We’re confused by (and frankly a little scared of) Super, Mega, Extra Grande, Trenta, Extreme and Value-sized—when “big” just can’t quite cut it. We feel pretty virtuous when we pick up dinner from Subway’s “Fresh Fit Choices” (paired with apples and water instead of chips and soda), but we hate it when we forget to ask you to put the mayo on the side. That little dollop of mayo (which looks to be about 4 tablespoons) adds almost two chocolate chip cookies to our order of the “healthy” veggie sandwich. What is with the volume of liquids that are

dearbigtogoGods

being offered these days? We thought it couldn’t

26  marchw2015 skirt!magazine

get any more out of control and then 7-11 had to bring in the Big Gulp that holds 200% more liquid than the average human stomach. Always a good workout for our lifetime practice of stretching our stomachs. And by the way, where are the Small Gulps or even the Medium Gulps? A special thank you to McDonald’s for offering an alternative to our usual breakfast of fresh fruit and Greek Yogurt with the McDonald’s Big Breakfast with hotcakes, a large biscuit, hashbrowns, eggs and sausage. Because really, who needs breakfast when you can have a buffet? Our top award goes to fast food burgers. Instead of making the burgers bigger, you just pile patties on top of each other. Burger King Triple Whopper with cheese, we see you—THREE ¼ lb. patties (yes, that’s almost a full pound of meat), 82 grams of fat, and 1,230 calories. You’d have to have the metabolism of a hummingbird to burn that off! Overall, kudos to the fast food marketing teams. We wonder what would happen if you used words like “enormous,” “gigantic,” “hefty,” “massive,” or “excessive,” when labeling your foods. How about the Barn Door Burger... now that’s a description we can understand. So, if you could work on that so we could get our obesity numbers down and perhaps solve the problem of fair wages, we’d say “cheers.” And raise our bottle of water to you. We’ll keep the zero calories around.

Sometimes nothing but a big steak will satisfy a meat craving and Michael’s on the Alley has the biggest and best. Start with a tablesidemade Caesar salad, order the garlic mashed potatoes with your aged Tomahawk Ribeye, and don’t skip dessert— the Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse with Salted Caramel Brittle is too good to share. Full menu at HolyCityHospitality.com/ Michaels-on-the-Alley.

Harriett Lee is helping grow big entrepreneurs.

The CofC grad and Charleston native has always been passionate about entrepreneurship. Her background includes work with the Charleston Digital Corridor and Dig South. Her experience helped her understand that entrepreneurs are essential to economic development, as they produce 60-70% of jobs created and in turn create an abundance of wealth in our community. A few years ago, she began working with her mentor and Founder of YEScarolina, Jimmy Bailey, who she calls “the man with the big idea to bring this program to Charleston.” She signed on as Vice President and has been working diligently to raise funds for YEScarolina’s programs ever since. “Both students pictured [Aquila Brown and Jesse Horine] are kids from our program who both made it to the nationals for the business competition, two out of the top 40 in the country,” says Harriett with pride. “The reward for me is seeing kids in these programs gain confidence and see how excited they get when they understand they can create their own business.” And with entrepreneurship being the “post-recession business model,” these programs are more important than ever to bring jobs to our city. “The new economy is in the hands of the next generation.” The org’s 5th annual gala raised $325,000 for programs last year; their goal is $500,000 for the 6th annual, so mark your calendars for October 22. Sponsors are needed, as well as donations. Visit YEScarolina.com for event and donation information.

Kari and Liz made big business out of big clutter. Two neighbors raising six kids, two dogs, one cat and two husbands in the suburbs, lived just two doors down from each other. Between them, they have eight years of combined organizational experience in a variety of fields, and in 2013, the duo came up with the brilliant idea to merge their skills and create a business to help people master the art of simple living. A Simple Nest was born. Kari Kim and Liz Ryan now work fulltime to help people reduce and repurpose to clear the clutter. “People get very attached to ‘stuff’ for a variety of reasons,” says Kari. “Our goal is to simplify rather than organize. It’s one way of letting our clients actually use the things they love so they can use them every day.” They also encourage clients to donate to charities, hold estate sales, and so on. People tend to feel better knowing the things they don’t need are going to people who do need them. The only “rule?” Their clients cannot shop for new items until they have completed the work. Says the pair, “Our mission to help simplify our clients’ ‘nests’ so that they can live a more simple and joyful life inspires us to walk the walk. We joke that one day we will be sitting in an empty room with five chairs, spoons, plates and glasses and that is all that will be left.” More info on decluttering your living space (check out their blog!) at ASimpleNest.com.

Expect big things from Seth G. The 24-year-old native of Charleston and 2012 graduate of Furman University has had an illustrious career for his age. Seth Gilliard is known as “Seth G.” and comparisons to Kenny G don’t bother him at all. “My father is a huge jazz fan and Kenny was one of the first jazz musicians to break into the mainstream,” says Seth. “My parents were extremely supportive of my interest in music.” With a background that includes a stint as concertmaster of the Furman Symphony Orchestra and a soloist for the Anderson and Charleston Symphony Orchestras, Seth first picked up a violin at Ashley River Creative Arts School and his classical training continued through private lessons in high school. Alongside his classical and jazz experience, Seth now has a budding career as a contemporary violinist, releasing a mixtape of his most popular covers and an EP of original pop songs. He is currently working on another mixtape as well as his debut album. This year is his second as CSO Artist in Residence and he loves giving presentations at local schools to introduce young students to contemporary classical music. See him in person on Thursday evenings at O-Ku and visit SethGMusic.com to see where Seth will be playing and his latest videos and music downloads.

Google Apps for Business: Keep your email, calendar, presentations and documents in one place tied to your domain and team. Kona: Managing a lot of projects? We use Kona to keep it all organized by client, tasks and due date.

Big organization

Big THINKING

Keeping It All Organized: Working toward a BIG goal or idea takes a lot of work, and the true secret to getting it all done is organization. Whether you’re a one-woman dynamo or managing a team, try these tools:

Big business

getting social with Ashley T. Caldwell

Local Inspiration:

Freshbooks: Invoicing and bookkeeping in the cloud, perfect for on the go. I can send an invoice, receive a payment and send my accountant my statements...all on my iPhone. Trying to streamline your social media and autopost? DON’T DO IT! Users are on each network for a different reason. If you can’t handle posting on multiple networks, either scale back or hire someone to do it right.

Put This on Your Calendar:

Listen to Your Mother is coming BACK to Charleston. This series of monologues from locals gives motherhood a voice (and the audience goosebumps). Auditions are going on now, and the show is on May 3). Get your tickets early— they’re sure to sell out!

As a CEO and pregnant mommy-to-be, I understand the need to steal a few moments for yourself. There’s no doubt that living in our picturesque city by the sea lends itself to serene and inspiring thoughts, but these are my favorite places to let myself think BIG: Pitt Street Bridge (Old Village, Mt. Pleasant): Catching a beautiful sunset always calms my mind and helps me visualize my next move. Washington Square (Off Broad St., Downtown): Love vibing off such a historic site and imaging how many “greats” also sat in this park. Local Works (LowcountryLocalFirst. com): This local coworking space has tons of energy (and local caffeine). Being surrounded by such positivity is always good for the soul.

Big Entrepreneur Trend: Marie Forleo... ever heard of her? Chances are if you’re an entrepreneurial female, you have. We’ve had several clients go through her B-School (marieforleobschool. com), which is great for conceptualizing how you’ll turn your passion into a business. How does The Modern Connection fit in? Actually implementing her recommendations is overwhelming for a lot of people, and we help our clients manage their entire presence online. You take B-School for business know-how, and we’ll help take your business to the next level!

“You can never go wrong by investing in communities and the human beings within them.”

Meet Montgomery.

The CofC graduate got a big idea to create patterns for the purses she designs for her company, GARB, by looking at rocks through a microscope when she was a geology major in college. She also creates jewelry for Peyton Williams Jewelry Studio. The brunch lover, dill pickle addict, and big thinker loves a Moscow Mule from The Rarebit, vacations at DeBordieu, and is never without a spare phone charger. She’s currently wrapped up in designing prints for GARB’s spring/summer line. Check out her super creative Instagram snaps at instagram. com/garb_designs or see her bags for sale at her Etsy shop, Etsy.com/shop/GARBdesigns.

There were more than a few squeals of glee in our office when we found out this year’s Spoleto USA lineup includes Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. We love that they’ve been musical kindred spirits for 40 years and that we get to see Emmylou live and in person on Memorial Day at the TD Arena (CofC). Mark your calendar for Monday, May 25, 7:30 p.m.! SpoletoUSA.org

“EMAIL IS FOR FACTS, NOT FEELINGS.” Marsha Egan

New Favorite word:

“Chicking” refers to when a female athlete finishes ahead of a male athlete, particularly when competing in endurance sports like triathalons and ultracycling. It’s based on the assumption that men are typically better at endurance sports, even though nine out of 20 pro women competing in the 2014 Amgen Tour of California would have beaten many in the men’s pro category for the time trial.Yes, it’s a compliment and we’ll take it!

WE ASKED THE UNIVERSE FOR THE ANSWERS TO OUR TOP TEN

BIG

q u e s t i o n s A N D T H I S I S H O W S H E S O K I N D LY ANSWERED US.

What sustains me? What is my purpose today?

To keep your spa date.

Taco night. And a margarita. And a tequila shot.

Will I end up alone?

Only if you keep eating your date’s dessert after saying you don’t want any.

Am I the best I can be?

If you’re sick of selfimprovement books, then sure, why not?

Why am I here? Where do i see myself in five years?

Because your GPS got confused.

In front of a mirror. Searching for gray hairs.

Is this all there is?

How will I know if he is The One?

When you’re tearfully chocolate-bingeing your way through PMS and he still thinks you’re perfect.

If you’re referring to wine, then, no. Trader Joe’s has your back. What’s next?

Hopefully not jury duty.

XOXO! See you in April for The Survival Issue!
