As we begin this new year I hope that all of us are looking forward to a great skirmish season. By the time you read this we will already had at least one skirmish and hopefully the weather will cooperate this year so that we do not need life jackets in order to go down range! Good luck to all.

Over the last several years we have had a focused recruiting effort, and this has paid off as we have stopped the large loss of members and are seeing an increase in new members. I hope that we can bring in at least 150 new members in 2019 and also reduce the overall age of our members by at least 10 years. This means that all of us have to continue to recruit and foster new members. As part of our recruitment plan I hope that you will see a by-laws change to allow people to join the NSSA as non-members. Currently this option is only open to current members who want to become non-shooting members. I believe that if we allow people to become non-shooting members without already being in the NSSA we will add a significant number of people to our ranks. These people may already have an association with the NSSA but I am sure that we will gather in people who are new to our sport. Non-shooting members can become regular members and they also can help the organization in many ways other than being on the firing line. Please support this change if the Board passes it in January.

One of the better parts of the job of national commander is to help hand out awards at our national skirmishes. From young air rifle shooters to senior skirmishers it is great to see the joy on their faces and their pride in a job well done. I strongly encourage everyone who receives an award to come to the ceremony in uniform and be ready to have your picture taken for the Skirmish Line or to be put on our internet accounts. These pictures become the face of our organization and we want to present an image that reflects our interest in skirmishing and history. Let’s look sharp and reflect our pride in the N-SSA. Our organization only has three paid employees. All of the other positions in the N-SSA are volunteer ones. Accordingly, without volunteers we cannot survive. I strongly encourage you to volunteer to help the N-SSA. We need people on many levels from being officers on your individual teams, to being regional officers, to helping on a national level. The Skirmish Line needs more reporters and staff members. Our editor does her best and turns out a first class magazine but she can use help. We have committees that need more members and some positions that have gone unfilled. The youth program needs more skirmishers or non-shooting members to help run it. Where would we be without volunteers? Please consider volunteering your time, skills and energy to help the N-SSA. When we skirmish at Fort Shenandoah we are able to get food at the Ruritan Club stand. This is one of the most important spots at our fort. We are very thankful to the members of the Ruritan’s and are grateful for the wonderful work that they do in the community. Please support them and tell them thanks when you get a chance. Our paid employees, Judy Stoneburner, Tim Scanlan, and Linwood McMahon continue to go far above the requirements of their jobs as they work to help and better our organization. Please make sure you acknowledge all that they do!

Skirmish Line

This is the first of a series of articles about items of curiosity found around Fort Shenandoah, or anywhere that skirmishes take place.

By Wayne Jordan Did you ever look at the cannon in Memorial Park and wonder whose it is, or where it came from? Before the start of the fall Nationals I was standing near that cannon when our National Executive Secretary, Judy Stoneburner, mentioned that she had to file a report on it. “Would you like to know about that cannon?” She asked.

There is a plaque mounted in front of the cannon dedicating it to Charlie Williams, who founded the Chartiers Valley Guards (CVG) in 1957 and was its first commander. He died in 1963 and the cannon is a memorial to him. There have actually been two Charlie Williams cannons in the park. At first, the cannon tube was mounted on a naval carriage, but as that carriage started showing its age, Jim Brady of Knaps Battery, suggested it should sit on a regular artillery carriage, and he managed to make that happen.

According to Sherry Myers, now with the Union Guards, the cannon tube was buried muzzle down in Charlie’s backyard when he died, and his widow was not pleased about it. She convinced a few members of the CVG to remove it and they donated it to the N-SSA in Charlie’s memory. It then ended up on the naval carriage.

The cannon tube was originally mounted on a naval carriage.

So, how did Jim Brady manage to get that new carriage for the cannon? I’ll let him explain. “That carriage is on loan from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which is still the actual owner. When I was still with the Army at Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pa., we were getting some stuff from a warehouse on post and I saw a couple of those cast iron Gilbert Carriages. I got to thinking on how the naval truck that tube was resting on was rotting that this might be a chance to replace it.”

“The tube is a Model 1819 6 pdr gun, nicknamed the ‘Walking Stick’, probably cast in the early 1820s at Ft. Pitt Foundry. Iron field guns of the time were not as durable as the bronze guns and many proof tests record ‘Burst First Fire.’

It’s doubtful if any saw service during the Civil War, being very outclassed by a series of later models culminating in the M1841 bronze 6 pdr, and later the M 1857 12 pdr ‘Napoleon’ gun, and of course the rifled pieces.”

“The mercenary side of the idea was that our old commander Russ Yeagy’s ashes were on deposit behind the gun which was where he loved to be, behind a cannon at Fort. I did some inquiries and found that those carriages belonged to the state. After hooking up with the proper office I posed the question. I was told that since they were considered public property they could not be sold or given away but that they could be loaned with certain conditions. I was also told that they were tired of moving them from place to place because they had to borrow storage space and would be glad to have one less to worry about. I spoke with John Robey, commander at the time, and explained the deal and it was OK’d by all concerned. We hauled it down and spent a day fitting the tube up to the carriage and getting it in place. The plaque on the left cheek piece of the carriage explains it provenance. I think the state wanted it insured for $300.00 and that the N-SSA did a letter of self-insurance for the state to have on file. They also wanted a renewal of the request of loan every few years.”

And that is why Judy must now file a report on that cannon every four years.

The Unsung Skirmishers

By Wayne Jordan At every National, I stop by Doc’s Place in Sutler’s Row, buy a patch and maybe some other merchandise, and take a look at what’s in stock. It struck me that somebody has to put a lot of time and effort into running it. In recent years that job has fallen to Rick & Christine Intravia. When the store was in danger of closing for lack of volunteers, they stepped up to save it and now it dominates their time at each National. It is due to their high level of dedication that we still have this store.

“We are NOT a sutler operation,” is the first thing Rick tells me. “I want to emphasize this. We are volunteers. This store belongs to the N-SSA. Every penny of profit we make goes back into the N-SSA treasury. That is a few thousand dollars at each National.”

Rick started Skirmishing in 1974 with the 1st Connecticut Volunteers. When he lived in California during the early 1980s, he skirmished with the CWSA. Upon his return to the east coast he helped form one of the Berdan’s Sharpshooters units, but is now back with the 1st Connecticut. Never shy about volunteering, he has served as paymaster, armorer, and quartermaster. He is now the New England Region Inspector General.

But how did they get roped into running Doc’s Place? According to Rick, “After some libations on Friday night at the barn, Christine offered to take over as manager of Doc’s Place to keep it open.” So, who is this Christine? Christine joined the N-SSA in 2005, the year after she married Rick, and first shot in the Spring National that year. She has also served as both regional and unit paymaster. She has some very good professional experience managing a grocery and corporate cafeterias which made her a good fit for the job. According to Rick, “Christine is a great organizer.”

The store is named after Doc Chambers, who was a very dedicated long-time skirmisher. His profession was as a chiropractor and he was known to help out skirmishers in camp who had bad backs or other problems. In the early 90s he was the driving force behind creating the store to sell official N-SSA merchandise to our members. He also served for several years as our National Paymaster. Doc was from Connecticut, part of the New England Region. It is as a tribute to Doc that the store has been kept afloat by his colleagues from that region. “Doc was a truly good man,” says Rick.

Take a look at the wide variety of merchandise in the store the next time you walk by. There are logo items to suit everyone. The merchandise changes somewhat each year with different styles of shirts and new items added or cleared out. Rick & Christine listen with an open mind and are happy to take suggestions for new items from patrons. For instance, a while back a few people asked for Zippo lighters with the logo on them, and the next National there was a stock of Zippos on display at the store.

In the past they have been helped by their son, Rick, Jr., but school often makes it difficult for him to make it to Nationals these days. Without him, Rick Sr. says there is no one around who knows how to properly fold shirts.

Another little known fact about Doc’s Place is that the emergency phone number for Ft. Shenandoah rings at the phone in the store. On occasion, a call will come in that requires Rick or Christine to find a specific person in camp and pass on an important message.

Behind the scenes, the Intravias agree they would be lost if not for the support of Jim & Sandy Baird. The Bairds arrange many of the merchandise orders, deliver them, and keep the finances straight.

Unsung Skirmishers

The Intravias shoot musket, carbine, and smoothbore, although they miss many National matches now due to working at the store. Sunday mornings are about the only time they can be sure of being able to get free to shoot, but even then they need to return to the store in the afternoon to take inventory. Most of the firearms they shoot are originals, including Rick’s 1862 Springfield, Smith carbine, and 1842 smoothbore. Christine shoots a 2 band Amoskeag repro, but also shoots an original Smith carbine. Rick, Jr. shoots all originals including a Maynard carbine, ‘62 musket, and ’42 smoothbore. Besides skirmishing, they all shoot Trap, sporting clays, and high power rifle competitions. Christine and Rick are both NRA certified Range Safety Officers.

Running the store takes a lot of time and effort, and two people are not enough to do the job and still be able to enjoy the skirmish. More volunteers are needed and anyone can help out. I’ll let Rick explain what he needs, “I am amazed at how well our organization runs with only a couple of paid positions and volunteers. When I walk the line during my job as an IG, I see hundreds of members and family members sitting in chairs watching the events. I would like to see some of them volunteer with whatever time they can at Doc's Place. We offer On Job Training and no pay, great benefit package since its always 5 o-clock at Doc's Place, and yes … we even have a couple of chairs. It really is fun to do!” Yes, anyone can help whether a member or not. Even a couple hours at a National would be a big help. As for 5 o-clock at the store, I’ve heard that there is often a cool beverage and refreshments available to volunteers. Drop by and talk to Rick and Christine if you can help out a little - they are fun to work with.

Rick and Christine live in Hebron, Connecticut, in a somewhat isolated house that was built in approximately 1780. It has been modernized inside, but still has two fireplaces (one for heating and one for cooking) along with a beehive oven.

The house is built out of chestnut, inside and out. They have goats running around on their property. In addition, they have other hobbies. They both have classic cars, including a 1970 Duster 340 and a 1988 red Chrysler convertible. They take both of them to classic car shows. They also have a plywood boat originally built in the 1950s with a single piston motor in it that they have fixed up and also take to boat shows. And they use it recreationally on local waterways. Rick is retired as a union electrician and Christine has retired from the hospitality industry.

Rick and Christine Intravia, for going above and beyond the call of duty to support the N-SSA and its members, you are the Unsung Skirmishers.

This is a regular feature for the Skirmish Line. I will need the help of the membership to make it work. In each edition of the Skirmish Line I would like to highlight at least one of our members who has done something special for the rest of us. This could encompass a wide variety of actions, but the common thread will be that this person (or persons) has made a special effort to do something above and beyond the call of duty for the benefit of the N-SSA and its members. It can be large or small. I need our members to be on the lookout for such an individual and his/her good deeds and send me the information about the person and what he/she did. If possible send me a photograph as well. It could even be a pair of people or a group of people. And it will be published here. Now, who can nominate someone else for our next issue? Do you know someone who has given selflessly of their time for the benefit of others?

2018 Work Skirmish

By Jeff Hall The 2018 Work Skirmish was held on Saturday, June 16. The turnout was excellent once again, with 64 Skirmishers from 25 different units working together to perform tasks as assigned by our Property Manager, Tim Scanlan. Skirmishers worked on many different projects as listed below: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Continued gathering flood debris which volunteers from the 1st Md. Cav. and the Cockade Rifles began the preceding week.

Straightened and repaired fence lines.

Trimmed trees and bushes and hauled away brush.

Painted shooting benches at the Pistol Range.

Painted doors on bathrooms at left end of the line.

Removed items from the Historical Center and placed in storage trailer. Rebuilt entrance way. Removed remaining floor tile and cleaned floor.

Cut up “drift wood” and hauled off.

MEET THE STAFF OFFICER

By Wayne Jordan Meet John Robey, the Rules Officer of the N-SSA. A skirmisher since 1962, John lives in Springfield, Ohio, and is a member of the Union Guards.

So, what exactly does the Rules Officer do? “I maintain the rulebook,” is his first answer. The rules by which the N-SSA operates must constantly be reviewed and sometimes revised. This must be done in an orderly manner. There are times when John generates a proposal for a rules change himself, but most changes are suggested by other skirmishers.

John will review the proposed change and help dress it up with the right language and make sure that it is in order to present to the Board. When a suggestion is submitted to him it may be anything from a vague idea to a fully formed proposal. John sees his job as one of trying to help put it into final form, without passing judgement, so that it can get a fair hearing before the Board. That said, he will make suggestions to help improve the proposal or point out if the same idea has recently been voted down. He will then preview the proposal with elected officers to give them time to think about the proposal before its formal presentation.

John Robey One of the most important things John must do is make sure that the N-SSA Rules Officer addition, revision, or removal of a rule does not inadvertently conflict with other rules that will remain on the books. That calls for a thorough knowledge of all the rules and, often, a search through the rulebook to look for such conflicts. The smallest details can become very significant at this point.

How did John get tied up in this duty? It started long ago when Dicky Dodd gave him a copy of the 1958 rulebook, and John has been the Rules Officer most years now since 1972. He learned the basics from John Gilmer, the original rules guy. “He told me his job was to make it simple and do it right, regardless of whether he agreed with it or not. And if the Board approved it, he would suggest the best way to write it up and implement it,” says John.

But the real starting point was at a meeting when Carl Jensen was the National Commander and he needed an analysis done of a new sight proposal. Gilmer and Robey were sitting side by side and Carl pointed at them and assigned them the job of evaluating the proposal. “I was just a spectator, sitting in the wrong place,” says John, “and I got drafted into the process.” It wasn’t too long before John’s predecessors, John Gilmer and Frank Schoch, asked him to take over the office of Rules. What is John’s main qualification for doing this job? “I’m a good detail man,” he says. And clearly that is a very important trait for succeeding at this job.

According to John, the best part of the job is having a working knowledge of the rules and the opportunity to help the organization run smoothly. He likes to tell people that, “I simplified the rule book once, from 25 sections to 40 sections.

That was to gain greater clarity.” But as with any job, there can be frustrating moments, too, with last minute proposals dropping in without proper time to analyze and organize them, and submissions that are virtually the same as others recently dealt with. “But I do my best to take care of them all,” he says.

John joined the N-SSA 1962 when he was living in Indiana and had a summer job that included putting together a Civil War Centennial display for the Indiana State Fair. A skirmisher from the 19th Indiana came by the display and met John, told him about skirmishing, and invited him to “take a ride” to meet some fellow skirmishers. had joined the N-SSA. He participated in his first National in May of 1963. Back in those days a single team would host the skirmish, in this case the Dismal Swamp Rangers. Over the years John has held numerous offices including National Commander, Deputy Commander, Inspector General, Adjutant, Program Chair, Midwest Commander, Long Term Planning Committee, and Team Commander. He was a charter member of the Union Guards which formed in 1984.

Outside of skirmishing John has a few other interests. He sang in high school and college choirs and, as an adult, spent 45 years as the director of a Catholic church choir. If you drive past his cabin along the road below the pond you may notice the sign over his cabin door that says, “AfterMath”. He was a junior high school math teacher for 37 years, plus a few years as a substitute. Skirmishing is a family affair for the Robeys. John’s wife, Beth, is involved in the costume competition, his son Tom has been a national officer, son-in-law Phil Spaugy has served as National Commander, daughter-in-law Trina has skirmished, and his grandson TJ is now shooting. Currently John shoots a Richmond Short Rifle, a Smith carbine, and an M1851 Cadet smoothbore. He has been part of six national champion teams – four musket and two carbine. But, to round out his experience he has also been on two last place teams, in 1963 and 1964.

Any final words, John? “I enjoy skirmishing because of the people who make up the organization. In addition to shooting, I learned a lesson from Happy Taylor years ago. He perfected skirmishing without firearms when he chose no longer to shoot. He still loved to come up to skirmishes just to hang out with friends.”

Meet the Staff Officer or Committee Chairperson is a series that will be published in each edition of the Skirmish Line. The most recent N-SSA directory lists 29 Staff Officers and 17 Committee Chairs. This reflects the wide range of duties that must be performed to keep our organization running. Most of these volunteers are low profile people who work quietly behind the scenes, contributing an enormous number of hours of work to support the N-SSA each year. This series of articles is meant to bring them out of the background and share with our membership who they are and why they are in these jobs.

TOP GUN – MUSKET

By Wayne Jordan At the 138th Nationals in October of 2018, T. “Will” Rea of the Nansemond Guards shot the highest single musket target with a score of 95-4X on his 50-yard target.

Will is single and lives in Williamsburg, VA along with his dog. He works in the property management business. He likes it because he gets to move around rather than sit in an office and each day is different as he finds ways to keep tenants happy. Will loves to hunt deer and small game. He also enjoys backyard barbeques and beers with friends, or just taking a long walk in the woods. His dad, Tom, is his only family member who skirmishes.

I interviewed Will (upon his return from a hunting trip at which he shot a buck) to learn how he has become such a strong competitor and share this information with other skirmishers to use as they see fit.

WJ – Will, can you tell us how you got started in the shooting sports and became so proficient with a musket?

Will - I got started in the N-SSA by accompanying my dad, Tom, to skirmishes starting in 1987 when I was only six years old. When I was Top Gun Will Rea little, I shot BB and pellet guns, then in the Boy Scouts shot .22 and Nansemond Guards shotguns. Dad was my main shooting instructor and he took me to the range often when I was growing up in Newport News, VA. By the time I turned 15 in 1996, I was more than ready to compete with a musket and joined my dad’s team, the 66th North Carolina. But after high school, like many kids, I went my own way and took a 17-year break from skirmishing. I came back to it in 2013. I wish I’d stayed. I missed out on lots of fun times, I’m sure.

WJ – Tell us about the musket and ammunition that you use and why you like it.

Will - I shoot a 2-band Zoli Zouave that my dad bought in 1987 and used to shoot ‘til he gave it to me a few years ago. It still has a factory barrel, but it is bedded. Dad had put a peep sight on it which I mostly like, but it is not ideal when there is heavy smoke or fog. The musket also has some lead added to both the butt and the fore-end of the stock which makes it rather heavy, about 13 pounds. I find it helps me to hold it steady, as long as I hold it at the proper balance spot. If I don’t hold it properly, though, the weight can really throw me off. I use a Hodgdon bullet sized to .575 with 39 grains of 3F Goex powder. As for lead, I usually use sheet lead but sometimes mix in some range lead. My dad is quite good at working on guns and he took good care of this one. I’ve heard that the Zolis are known for parts wearing out, but dad has repeatedly case hardened some of the metal parts and they’ve all lasted this long and work fine for me.

I weigh each bullet and each powder charge. Consistency is very important in all aspects of shooting. I will use any bullet that weighs between 404 and 407 grains, and all others go back into the pot. I used to use a bottom pour pot, but I was not happy with the consistency of the bullets. Now I just dip each one. As for lube, I use a mix of olive oil and beeswax. I only lube the rings, and never put any in the base. I load my ammo with the base in the tube and the nose up. I think that protects the base from getting any sort of nicks or bumps that might throw its accuracy off a little.

WJ – When you are on the firing line, can you describe how you shoot and what you are thinking?

Will – First of all, I need to get my feet and body straight. I step up to the line and stand where I think I should, close my eyes, shoulder the gun, put my cheek on the stock, open my eyes and see if I’m aiming at the target.

Then I adjust my feet as needed so I am lined up with the target. This is easy to do when shooting individuals, but with a team match if I finish my targets ahead of my teammates I may need to adjust my feet again as I shoot at other targets to the right or left. In fact, if there is anything I hear on the line when shooting, it is Ben Waits calling to me to “shift your feet.” I shoot left handed, so I hold the stock with my right hand just touching the back of the rear band. That is the balance point.

I will load and then lay my ramrod against my bayonet. I place the bayonet between my feet and close so that I can quickly pick up or replace the ramrod with one smooth motion. I know that some guys like to hold the ramrod while shooting, but I have not tried that. I’m comfortable with the bayonet and I don’t think I lose time by using it.

I lift the musket up while breathing in, and then lower it into the target. When shooting individuals I take my time doing this and squeeze the trigger slowly. I expect to be surprised when it goes off. But in a team match I’ll often move more quickly. On a good day, when everything is falling in place, I’ll be snap shooting.

As for my eyesight, I wear contacts. When shooting I like a clear pair of shooting glasses, not tinted. I use a variety of colors on my front sight, depending on conditions at the time. I may use white out, which I’ll brush on, or I may use a pink or yellow paint that I apply with a toothpick. I buy it in a variety pack that is sold at Michael’s craft stores. My point is that I want a nice bright front sight. But you need to be careful to not apply it thickly enough to change the point of aim. It doesn’t take much. For the rear sight I like to use a carbide smoker.

WJ – Do you practice much?

Will – I go to the range when I can, usually about once a week and often with Harold and Ben from my team. I also compete in about 10 or more skirmishes per year. A big thing I’d like to emphasize is the dry firing that I do at home, though. I noticed early on that when on the firing line and all the muskets start firing, I’d feel my heart rate going up and I felt an anticipation and excitement about starting to shoot. And that could throw me off. So, when I’m at home dry firing, I will play a recording of an actual match taking place through my earbuds and that conditions me. It really helped me when competing in team matches. In fact, I attribute this to helping me in team matches more than anything else. It helped me move from a 60 something second hit time average down into the 30s, and as of the end of this season I’m number one on my team. It really slows my heart rate and my breathing down when stepping up to the line. It has helped me be more steady and lets me focus on just shooting accurately and not feeling rushed or excited.

WJ – Do you have any final advice for other skirmishers?

Will – First of all, there are plenty of old timers and experienced shooters in the N-SSA who know what they are doing and are happy to help you. Listen to them with an open mind and you might find that they have an idea that will help you. I appreciate the people who have helped me, like my dad, Ben Waits, Gary Bowling, and Harold Wertz. Second, try to be consistent in all you do. That said, if you are trying to get better you will need to make small little improvements to various aspects of your technique. But take it slow and know that these little things will add up to a big improvement over time.

Also, when shooting individuals, I see many people on the line making one particular mistake that stands out to me. They set up their scope, take a shot, then move their feet when leaning over to look through the scope. Don’t do that! When you then go to take the next shot, it is like starting over again with your body positioned a little bit differently. Position your scope close so that you don’t have to move to look through it.

WJ – Anything else?

Will – Well, looking back on my musket targets at this National, I must say that I was quite surprised. My previous high score was in the low 90s. I was just concentrating on each shot, and it felt good, but I had no idea I was shooting that well until I was done. On the other hand, I had a different experience on my 100-yard target.

After a couple of good siter shots I was ready to shoot for score. Something I didn’t mention before is that I like to wear gloves when I shoot. I wear mechanics gloves with all the fingers. They are thin and I can feel what I need to through them. But this time the trigger finger was wearing through and on my first shot the glove caught on the trigger and pulled the gun. The shot hit the paper for a zero. I shot an 83 on that target, but that was with only nine shots counting. I’ll get all ten next time.

This series will highlight our top shooters. After each National Skirmish, I will interview the highest scoring musket shooter in an effort to share with our readers information about how this person became such a great shooter. The hope is that many of our members will be able to take some advice from these top shooters and factor it in as they strive to be better shooters themselves.

The Lee A. Wallace Award is presented annually to the most-deserving N-SSA individual and unit that has demonstrated service and commitment to educating the public about the history of the War Between the States.

The awards are presented by John P. Zebelean, III, History Committee Chair.

Who was Lee A. Wallace?

Lee A. Wallace, Jr. received a B.A. from William and Mary College and an M.A. from the University of North Carolina. He spent several years in the military with the 30th Infantry Division, during World War II, and the VA National Guard. He wrote several books about the Civil War and the American Revolution including First Virginia Infantry, Fifth Virginia Infantry, and A Guide to Virginia Military Organizations, 1861-1865 for the Virginia Regimental Histories Series. NRA Senior Skirmisher Award

By Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 65 and older with the Senior Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores.

The winners in the Fall 2018 National are

Ben Waits and John Bly. Ben Waits, with a Musket Aggregate score of 181-02X, has been an N-SSA member since 1977, first with the York Rangers and now with the Nansemond Guards. This is the fourth time Ben has won the Senior Skirmisher Award. He is currently shooting a Richmond Artillery model musket with a Hodgdon bullet from a .580 mould. He sizes the bullet down as needed, but has found over the years that his bore has opened up and takes a larger bullet than it once did. He uses 39 grains of 3F powder, but that can vary as he starts fresh each spring by shooting for group with different charges and seeing what is working best. “I’m not a believer in thinking if it shot, say, 40 gr in 2001 it will still group with that charge in 2018,” he says. Ben also prefers a peep sight which minimizes the effect of his astigmatism and helps him focus better on the sights. He goes to the range at least once a week and often more to practice. But he only uses 6-10 rounds a day saying, “You can learn more in 6 good shots than you can shooting all day.” Now retired from a career as an engineering designer working with aircraft carriers, Ben has time to concentrate on his shooting skills. He also likes riding his bicycle and has always enjoyed playing golf. “I want to thank my wife for her support of my many shooting endeavors, and also my shooting/practice partners Harold Wertz, Gary Bowling, and Will Rea for all the good times we have had at the range.”

John Bly, with a Musket Aggregate score of 179-03X, has been shooting black powder since the 1970s when he built a Hawken rifle. In 1982, Jackie Venskoskie, Allan Cockey, and other friends convinced him to join the N-SSA where he has been a member of the 5th VA Infantry ever since. During that time he has served several terms as team commander. “I simply enjoy shooting – the competition and the camaraderie,” says John. He shoots a hand built repro Mississippi rifle with a Bill Large barrel, an original 1st Model Maynard, and an original 1842 Harpers Ferry smoothbore made into a 30” Macon version. In addition, John has been shooting long range black powder since 1992 with matches ranging up to 1000 yards. He is also proud of his son, Jacob, who has been a Young Skirmisher winner. John is retired now from 37 years working in metal fabrication and machine shops, but he maintains a home workshop and enjoys working on old guns and bringing them back to life. In 2002 he started supplying Maynard barrels and has delivered 100 of them to skirmishers since then. John has been married for 45 years and also has a daughter.

NRA Young Skirmisher Award

By Wayne Jordan At each National Skirmish the N-SSA awards the top two musket shooters age 18 and under with the Young Skirmisher Award. It is based on their aggregate individual musket scores. These two skirmishers will have their National dues paid next year by the sponsors of the award. This is one of many programs the N-SSA has been putting together to encourage young people to join and remain part of our organization.

The winners in the Fall 2018 National Young Skirmisher Award are

Grant Ostner and Wyatt Hale.

NRA High Junior Skirmisher, 1st Place

Grant Ostner

Grant Ostner of the 9th Virginia Infantry took first place with a Musket Aggregate score of 169.

Grant is 15 years old and has been skirmishing for a year now. He was brought into the N-SSA by his dad, Brian; his uncle, Matt Patton; and cousin, Devon Patton. “My dad always brought me to the shoots at the Fort and I enjoyed watching. So when I was eligible, I joined with my dad and enjoyed shooting the ‘big guns.’” Grant also wanted to start competing because it will teach him discipline as well as good safety practices around a variety of firearms – two goals for which he has a great appreciation. He has seen how much fun a weekend at a skirmish can be and considers the good sportsmanship he has witnessed throughout our organization to be a good example to follow.

His musket of choice now is a ’55 Springfield that his dad once used. He also shoots carbine, Henry, and is starting on revolver.

When he’s not working with his dad on the farm taking care of the pigs and chickens, Grant enjoys working on old trucks and entering tractor pulling contests.

Skirmish Line

138th Fall National

NRA Young Skirmisher Award Wyatt Hale of the 37th Georgia came in second place with a Musket Aggregate score of 162-1X. At 14 years-old, this was Wyatt’s first National, and only his third skirmish. Wyatt’s father, Brad; and grandfather, Delmar, both shoot with the N-SSA so he has largely grown up at Fort Shenandoah.

Wyatt’s interest in firearms started at a young age.

While in elementary school he started using the internet to research WW2 guns that his dad collected. Soon he had detailed knowledge of a wide variety of small arms used by various armies in that war. By the age of 10, Wyatt was shooting international smallbore while being coached by the same coach who worked with Walt Zdon (2nd Md Art) when he was young. He also attended “prone school” and was coached by Scott Harris’ dad (a former Olympic alternate). And, of course, he competed in BB Gun at skirmishes. He now shoots an 1841 Mississippi that was his dad’s high school graduation present. In fact, his dad also won the Young Skirmisher Award back in 1992 with that same musket.

Wyatt Hale

Besides shooting, Wyatt has been a wrestler since he was five and is now moving into the varsity level. He enjoys hunting and fishing and has already shot three bucks and caught a 49 lb. tuna.

Two of the four Young Skirmisher winners each calendar year are sponsored by Chiswell’s Exiles. At the 138th National, one of the winners was sponsored by the Host Staff. For 2019, there may still be sponsorship opportunities available for those interested in promoting and encouraging our younger members of the N-SSA. The NRA also lends its name to the sponsorship of these awards, and provides the plaque listing the names of the winners. The awards were presented by Dave Booz, N-SSA National Commander, and Philip Schreier, NRA Museum Senior Curator. Sponsorship of the dues was originally started by the N-SSA Youth Foundation.

Support the N-SSA through Charitable Giving THANK YOU TO THE MANY PEOPLE WHO DONATED IN 2018!

As I write this article in early December, there are donations to the N-SSA coming in each day. It is always a good time to make a donation to support our organization. A donation form is included below for your use. A full listing of 2018 donors will appear in the next Skirmish Line.

I have been asked if there is a way to see the impact of an individual using the Amazon Smile program, which allows a purchaser to direct a small part of each purchase to their favorite charity. When you have set up the N-SSA as your charity, you must first make sure to sign into smile.amazon.com (this will often happen automatically, but not always).

Look for the words, “Supporting: North-South Skirmish Association” in the top central part of the page. Click the arrow at the end of that line and a drop down window opens with information about the amount of donations you’ve generated.

Near the bottom of that window is another line in blue that says, “Your AmazonSmile impact”. Click on that for more info about your purchases and donations. Remember, Amazon is donating this money. It does not cost you anything. I’m sure that a large percentage of N-SSA members use Amazon. Even if everyone only makes a few purchases per year, it can really add up.

The question has also arisen about what types of donations the N-SSA can accept, either through annual giving or through estate planning. We are a small organization and do not have the capability to handle real estate or other illiquid assets. But, charitable gift trusts run by brokerage firms are able to handle a wide variety of these sorts of donations by liquidating the asset and allowing you to designate what charity the proceeds will support.

For more information, search for “charitable gift trusts” or “donor advised funds” on the internet. Personally, I have had good experience with Fidelity Charitable Donor Advised Fund from Fidelity Investments. It can be found at www.fidelitycharitable.org. These funds are also more useful than ever for tax planning under the new tax law.

Costume Committee of the N-SSA The Costume Committee welcomes all that wish to compete in the costuming competition or attend the workshop held at each Nationals.

Sewing Circle Times begin Fridays at 1:00 pm Sewing Circle - At each National, the Costume Committee members conduct a workshop or sewing circle on the Friday of the Nationals from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event is held in Memorial Park and is free and open to anyone that would like to attend. Don't forget to bring a chair. In case of inclement weather, information regarding the competition will be announced.

Forrest’s Escort Hosts Last Deep South Region Skirmish of the Year Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park, Eva, TN ~ November 2-5, 2018 By: Steve Sheldon It was as if Nathan Bedford Forrest himself was guiding the weather for us as the last skirmish of the year managed to skillfully dodge around the rain, much as Forrest dodged around his Union pursuers! Shooting got underway with Friday afternoon individuals with cloudy skies, but no rain until later that evening. The showers quit in the early morning leaving us with a spectacular clear and crisp fall morning on Saturday.

Saturday morning, the field was full of people finishing up their individual targets until just after noon, when the carbine match began. There were 9 teams on the field, including two B teams. This year, the top place went to the 110 th OVI once again. The 3rd Georgia took second place and the 46th Illinois A team took 3rd.

Next up was the Smoothbore match where 8 teams threw round balls down range. The 110 th OVI again took first place, followed by the 3rd Georgia again in second place, and the 44th Georgia in 3rd.

Saturday evening Forrest’s Escort once again provided a huge selection of chili with all the fixings, and plenty of dessert to go around. After the chili had gone down the hatch, the award ceremony was held.

All the teams took to the field on Sunday morning for opening ceremonies followed by the musket match, with 9 teams making smoke. The 110th OVI continued their domination of the weekend taking 1st place, followed by the 14th Mississippi in second, and the 14th Illinois taking third. Things concluded just in time for folks to pull up stakes and get on the road before the rains once again descended on Eva. Thus concluded another year of N-SSA skirmishing in the Deep South Region. We hope everyone has lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and that Santa brings you that musket you’ve been hankering for and puts lots of black stuff in your stockings (powder, not coal)!

We’ll see you all next year at Brierfield Ironworks Park on February 15-17th for the opening skirmish of the 2019 season!

50 Years – One Team

By Wayne Jordan I was at a small skirmish a year or two ago when an announcement was made from the tower that one of the host team’s members had just hit the 50-year mark. He had helped form his team 50 years ago and was still going strong. In fact, he was more active than ever. This sounded to me like a story that needed to be told. Fifty years is a long time to be a skirmisher, but spending all fifty with the same team, and only that team? How many have done that? (Seriously, write to me and I’ll print their names in the next edition.)

This man is Jackie Venskoskie and by now, just about everyone in the N-SSA has met him. He, his dad, and others chartered the 5th Virginia Infantry in 1966. You may know Jackie from shooting, hosting skirmishes, the Ruritan snack bar that he helps run, or from buying powder at his shop on the exit road from Ft Shenandoah, or from the days when he used to be the property manager for the Fort, or more recently from working with him at a work skirmish. He may have even helped your team construct a pavilion. The history of the N-SSA is tightly intertwined with the life of Jackie Venskoskie. He is definitely one of the more interesting skirmishers to write about.

His story started out back in 1965 when a small group

of skirmishers were camping during the 4th of July. The N-SSA had only owned the property for a few years at the time and the grass needed mowing, both in campsites and on the firing range. There was a farm on the property adjoining Ft Shenandoah and they asked the farmer if they could hire him to mow the grass. They then asked him if he’d like to shoot a musket. Quite surprisingly, they had a stockpile of beer and plied the farmer with it until he agreed. That farmer was Elmer Venskoskie. Who would have thought? He and his wife, Bertha, lived at the farm next door. Elmer called his son, Jackie, over to join in on the musket shooting. Both father and son soon became hooked. They recruited seven more neighbors and had a team for the next year.

Why the 5th VA? Well, Jackie bumped into a local boy who was involved in a 5th VA reenactment group. Further investigation revealed that during wartime, the 5th VA was primarily composed of men from the Winchester area and was a part of the Stonewall Brigade. To Jackie, that seemed like a pretty good heritage to start with. The team has prevailed over the following years, but Jackie is the only founder who is still active. The 5th VA is also one of the largest and most cohesive teams in the N-SSA, carrying well over 30 members on its roster. Over the years there have been at least 11 Venskoskies on the team, spanning over four generations. The fifth generation is already attending skirmishes. Jackie added up their service time and figures that the family exceeds 240 years of membership. In fact, at a skirmish last year, the 5th VA put in four teams – an A, B, C, and V team (for the Venskoskie team). Jackie has served as a team commander and treasurer, but he stays especially busy with all his volunteer activities.

Jackie began shooting in his mid-20’s with a Zouave musket. When a carbine competition was established

around 1980, he picked up a Smith carbine and added that competition set. He married his wife, Charlotte, in 1998 and she too was intrigued by skirmishing. One day in the late 90’s she saw another all-woman team firing a mortar and that inspired her to join on a whim. That Christmas, Jackie gave Charlotte a rather unusual present, a mortar barrel.

That gift sealed it. She had to learn to shoot a musket at that time as well, so she could join the team. She has been quite successful with that mortar ever since. Over the last 50+ years, Jackie says he has been at all but three skirmishes that have taken place at Fort Shenandoah.

The 5th VA is an unusually large team, with about 35 members at last count, and many of them have been around for quite a long time. Most teams can’t keep that many people together for very long before there is a split.

However, the members of the 5th are largely members of the local community. Gainesboro is a small but tight-knit place and it’s so nearby that very few stay overnight at the camp. Jackie speculates that, because they are only together part of the day, it keeps them from getting on each other’s nerves. However, Jackie obviously enjoys his team and skirmishing in general. “I like the people, the members, the team camaraderie,” he says. “It is not how I shoot, or you shoot, but how we shoot. It’s what we do as a team, and we all get along well, and we shoot together well.”

Jackie also plays a significant role in the local community. He’s the Secretary of the Gainesboro Fire Company and is very active in his church. He’s also one of the driving forces behind the operation of the Ruritan snack bar. He joined the Ruritan only a month before he joined the N-SSA. Back then, the snack bar was comprised of a couple tents borrowed from a local mortuary, a grill, and some coolers. In the early 70’s they built the first Ruritan building. It was small but quickly expanded. It burned down in 1991 and was quickly rebuilt, bigger and better than before. Jackie was deeply involved in the design and construction of the building. He is a permanent board member of the Ruritan and is one of a three-man team that manages the snack bar, places orders, works shifts, makes many of the operating decisions, and makes sure everything runs smoothly. He’s there every skirmish, working at least on Fridays and Saturdays, sometimes more. He prefers to stay in the back and cook but does a Skirmish Line

little bit of everything. He says about 50% of the adults living in Gainesboro are Ruritan members. But the biggest point he wants to make is that all profits go to local charities. There is a sign at the front of the snack bar that lists a quite impressive roster of groups that have received money from the operation of the snack bar. So if you’re looking for a great snack, and a great cause, be sure to stop by.

In 1971, Jackie moved into the caretaker’s house and became the Property Manager for the N-SSA for the next 15 years. Why? “I was building houses, the job opened up, it was close to home, and it appealed to me,” he says. He had plenty of experience with carpentry, masonry and other construction and repair skills, and his wife at the time was very much in favor of him taking it on. Jackie liked being his own boss and setting his own schedule. He was able to help his dad on the farm when needed, could meet his kids at the school bus, and enjoyed interacting with the

skirmishers. During his 15 years, he oversaw the building of the first four bathrooms, the drilling of seven wells, and the construction of the barn and Veterans Building. He also built two footbridges and oversaw the rebuilding of the main bridge. Even after retiring, he was involved in the building of the revolver range bridge, the main bridge (again), and the Stat Shack.

By 1986, Elmer had passed and Bertha offered Jackie the chance to take over the powder business. It was a good opportunity, so he moved back to the farm. Selling powder would have conflicted with his Property

Management duties, so he retired from property management. The powder business started around 1972 when Len Eastep of the Old Dominion Dragoons (who had been selling powder at Ft Shenandoah) asked Elmer to store the powder on the farm. It seems that someone noticed the danger of keeping massive quantities of powder in camp. Initially, Len would give people a coupon for their powder purchase which would then be redeemed at the farm on the way out. Around 1982, Bertha bought out the whole business. Ever since, the Back Creek Powder Company has been one of the largest dealers of black powder in North America. Of course, a built-in customer base is right next door which consumes over half of Back Creek’s sales. Jackie ships powder out, too. He has an ATF-approved powder magazine built into the side

of a hill on his farm. He also sells a few other black powder related products such as caps, lube, cannon fuses, etc. In recent years he has built a shop just for powder sales as well as a new driveway into the shop area. Jackie and Charlotte live in the main house, part of which was built in 1801.

Any final thoughts, Jackie? “I like what the N-SSA has done for the towns of Winchester and Gainesboro.

Skirmishers make a big contribution to the local economy.”

Yes, it seems to be a mutually beneficial relationship between the N-SSA and the local populace, and Jackie is just one of our members who makes that work for everyone’s benefit.
