PRESIDENT’S GREETING We have all heard the expression What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. We have all probably had reason to question the wisdom of this idiom. I have come to prefer Rabbi Steve Leder’s advice: If you have to walk through hell, don’t come out empty-handed. As the Skirball resumes campus life, we are focused on how to acknowledge the losses of the past year and bring forward new blessings. Extreme experiences can have the effect of clarifying one’s priorities. That was true for us at the Skirball: in the midst of our year-long closure, we embraced our six essential Jewish values to guide us. One of these, honor memory, finds expression this year in a multi-part memorial project titled Sustain. Sustain began in May with a yahrzeit candle, kindled in memory of the more than twenty-three thousand in LA County alone who have died due to COVID-19. When you come for Ai Weiwei: Trace, you will see it glowing at the entrance of the Skirball Museum. Then, when you return for Sunset Concerts in August, you will see that Sustain continues with a collective project that invites you to place a visitation stone in memory of a loss, any loss, that you are grieving. Finally, this fall, Sustain culminates with a permanent installation of the visitation stones in lasting memory of the communal pandemic experience. May the memory be a blessing. Of course, honor memory is only one of our essential values. As we relaunch Sunset Concerts and invite you back to the Taper Courtyard for live music and dancing, we hope to amplify others. Each evening will feature a treasured local talent and a vital community organization whose work exemplifies essential values we share. Together we will rejoice, rebuild, and renew our commitment to one another and a better world.
Jessie Kornberg President and CEO Skirball Cultural Center
OUR MISSION The Skirball Cultural Center is a place of meeting guided by the Jewish tradition of welcoming the stranger and inspired by the American democratic ideals of freedom and equality. We welcome people of all communities and generations to participate in cultural experiences that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

Take Part in Our Essential Values at Sunset Concerts The Skirball mission is deeply rooted in Jewish heritage and inspired by its values. Over time, certain values have emerged for us as the most vital, lighting our path toward building a better world. Four are listed below, each one paired with a Sunset Concerts performance that illuminates the meaning of the value. We hope you’ll join us this concert season, celebrating under the stars. Pursue justice—Get down to the folk rock sound of Quetzal, a Grammy Award– winning band that fuses art and activism to powerfully narrate the social, cultural, and political stories of humanity. (see p. 7) Build community—Dance to the indie rock grooves of Run River North, whose music aims to create an American experience where everyone belongs. (see p. 8) Show kindness—Connect to The Delirians’ old-school reggae sound and see how this group of young musicians is carrying on the genre’s legacy of love and unity. (see p. 8) Honor memory—Trace the influence and impact of the African diaspora with Extra Ancestral, an energetic artist collective that brings together music, dance, and the visual arts. (see p. 9)

EXHIBITION AI WEIWEI: TRACE
New reservations open every other Tuesday.
Through August 1, 2021 One-hour time slots offered Tuesday–Sunday Weekdays beginning every half hour 12:30–4:00 pm Weekends beginning every half hour 10:30 am–4:00 pm
Experience Ai Weiwei: Trace in its final weeks! Honoring political prisoners, this “always-poignant, often-powerful meditation” (LA Times) illuminates the power of resistance in the face of authoritarianism. Created in 2014, while the famed contemporary artist was under house arrest, the monumental display portrays activists, prisoners of conscience, and advocates of free speech from around the world. The Skirball presents eighty-three of the original installation’s 176 portraits, each one hand-assembled from thousands of LEGO® bricks. Complementing the portraits is a striking wallpaper entitled The Animal That Looks Like a Llama but Is Really an Alpaca. Designed by Ai Weiwei, the wallpaper pattern is comprised of subversive iconography like handcuffs and security cameras. Look closely to find a reflection of Ai Weiwei himself, hidden within the golden 3D renderings. All visitors are assigned an entry time permitting up to one hour in the gallery. Two-week ticket blocks are released every other Tuesday at 10:00 am. See p. 27 for ticketing methods and policies.

MEMBERSHIP MEMBER MOMENT “My family (pictured left) and I were thrilled to learn that the Skirball created an outdoor experience for families. This was the first time our family—three generations—enjoyed a real outing in a year. Thank you, Skirball! The kids loved the Rainbow Mist Arbor and being treated to story time in the Amphitheater. This was a high point for our little girls, Della and Reese. It was a wonderful opportunity to get back out there in such a safe and fun way.” —Becky Rodman, Skirball Member since 2016
