a nuova opportunità espositiva ed editoriale presentata dall’iniziativa del MdM Museum testimonia ancora una volta della straordinaria attualità della figura di Mario Schifano: al di là di intenti retorici o celebrativi, intende restituirne e riviverne l’eccezionale vitalità e ricchezza creativa, comprovata e riaffermata anche in occasione di recenti retrospettive.

Un’attualità che non risiede soltanto nella continuità della sua celebrità, della sua figura di artista che ha fatto di se stesso un logo e del proprio percorso l’espressione di una personalità pienamente e popolarmente riconoscibile, ma è dovuta alla sua inarrestabile vulcanicità, alla tracimazione della sua creatività oltre se stessa: alla sua produzione instancabile, a questo suo essere una sorta di moto perpetuo nel creare immagini, attraverso i mezzi più differenti, dalla pittura, alla fotografia, all’emulsione, al cinema. Una vulcanicità che include in sé anche la biografia multiforme e inarginabile dell’uomo Schifano, che secondo la felice definizione di Achille Bonito Oliva “ha adoperato un’arte avventurosa come metodo creativo, una sperimentale incursione nel linguaggio e nella vita insieme […]. La forma dell’arte come pathos, le dissonanze del quotidiano come immersione negli squarci della vita”1.

Si tratta di una qualità rarissima e trainante, che non si spegne con il chiudersi della sua parabola esistenziale, ma la trascende in un proliferare inarrestabile del suo immaginario, sino all’oggi. Un persistere di questa capacità dell’immaginario generato dalla fantasia di Schifano, il suo continuare a creare oltre se stesso, del quale ancora io, generazionalmente distante, ho avuto occasione di fare esperienza diretta in prima persona, quando alla fine degli anni settanta mi sono ritrovato in un celebre locale notturno sul lago di Garda, il cui spazio interno era ritmato da una selva di palme metalliche realizzate dall’artista, che come punteggiature verticali ed emittenti di luce artificiale sancivano il proprio destino a un loro permanere nel tempo oltre l’universo del visivo, in quella stessa nottunità kitsch che in qualche modo, nella seconda metà degli anni sessanta, come vedremo, ne aveva suggerito a Schifano la genesi prima.

Uno spazio per le immagini Da questo potere generativo della creatività di Schifano viene l’immensa mole delle sue tipologie e modalità di ricerca inventiva, la straordinaria felicità del suo fare e la sua mise en abîme della pittura e dell’immagine, che vorremmo in questa circostanza, ancora una volta e nuovamente, cercare di identificare in cicli, serie, titolazioni. La sua grande fama ci appare oggi giunta a un rinnovato punto cruciale di continuità evolutiva, a un momento particolarmente felice che ne consente, generazionalmente, un ulteriore sviluppo e possibile approfondimento. La sfida sta nel dissezionare tutto Schifano, per rendere tutto Schifano.

Questa mostra si articola attraverso quattro filoni di indagine tipologica dell’opera dell’artista nel corso degli anni sessanta: una sorta di primo carotaggio, di sondaggio, che permetta di isolare e investigarne le parti per poi riconnetterle, in una figura totale che diviene immagine della sua opera. I diversi spazi del MdM Museum sono stati dedicati ciascuno a una sezione di queste investigazioni.

ith this new show and its accompanying catalogue, the MdM Museum has given us a further opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary topicality of Mario Schifano. Its aim is neither rhetorical nor commemorative but to give another possibility for appreciating and experiencing his vitality and creative richness, something which has been demonstrated again in recent retrospective shows. This topicality is not just to be found in his continuing fame as an artist who made a logo of himself and whose career established a fully recognisable personality in the public mind: it is as much due to his unquenchably explosive and overflowing creativity as to his character, to his tireless production, to this kind of perpetuum mobile in creating images through the most diverse means, from painting to photography, emulsions and film. An explosiveness that also contains in itself the many-sided and irrepressible life of Schifano the man who, according to an apt definition by Achille Bonito Oliva, “has used adventurous art as a creative method, as an experimental raid on both language and life . . . The form of art as pathos, as everyday dissonances, as an immersion in aspects of life”.1 We are dealing with an extremely rare and infectious quality that did not end with his life but superseded it through the continuing flow of his imagination – and this has not finished even today. Even though I belong to another generation, I had a firsthand experience of the persistence of this generative capacity of Schifano’s imagination, of his continuing to create beyond his physical self, when at the end of the 1970s I found myself in a well-known nightclub on Lake Garda, the inside of which was punctuated by a forest of metallic palms created by the artist. Like vertical bar-lines, and emitting artificial light, they justified their persistence in time in a world beyond that of vision, while still belonging to the very night-time kitsch which, as we shall see, had inspired Schifano to create them first, halfway through the 1960s.

A Space for Images The range of types and varieties of his inventive interests, the extraordinary ease

of his production, and his mise en abîme of painting and images, the various series and titles of which I would now like to discuss, derive from this generative power of Schifano’s creativity. His great fame seems now to have arrived at a crucial point of renewed evolutionary continuity, at a particularly fortunate moment for further development and possible in-depth analysis for new generations. The challenge is to dissect all Schifano in order to restore all Schifano.

This exhibition is divided into four typological investigations into the artist’s work in the 1960s: a kind of initial probing or sounding which might permit us to isolate and investigate the parts in order then to connect them up again into a form representing an overall image of his work.

The various exhibition spaces of the MdM Museum have each been devoted to a section of these investigations.

On the ground floor is shown a series of works which investigates his thoughts and reinterpretations of the icons and signs of consumer society, as well as of advertising and media communications: these are decontextualised images reproduced as details and fragments, painted over vibrantly and expressively, and which suggest themselves as an antidote to the risks of depersonalization posed by the new iconic world of the 1960s.

The central area of the museum is devoted to the artist’s particular relationship with futurism. This fundamental Italian avantgarde movement celebrates its centennial now, in 2009. In fact, Schifano, above all halfway through the 1960s, forged a deep, conscious and explicit creative relationship with futurism through his ‘revisitations’, precisely because of an interest in the technological and urban aspects of the present which reflected theirs.

On the last floor are exhibited works in which Schifano’s themes were deserts and starry skies. In fact, the artist was born in Homs, Libya, and he recaptured his origins in the form of an archetypal space that, while being the opposite of an urban environment, was just as artificial, with its anti-naturalistic, brightly coloured images of palm trees and oases.

a Homs, in Libia, l’antica Leptis Magna, e questa sua origine viene recuperata come archetipo di uno spazio alternativo rispetto alla condizione urbana, ma altrettanto artificiale, attraverso le immagini di palme e “oasi” antinaturalistiche e dai colori squillanti.

Nel basement del museo viene infine presentata una preziosa serie di Paesaggi TV, realizzati dall’artista su carta fotografica, accostati a un grande flatscreen attraverso il quale sono presentati al pubblico video e filmati legati alla figura di Schifano, in sintonia con la sua idea e immagine ricorrente di uno “schermo” nel quale vivere la propria creatività.

Al piano terra, sono presentate una serie di opere che indagano la sua riflessione e reinterpretazione di icone e insegne della società dei consumi e della comunicazione pubblicitaria e massmediatica: sono immagini decontestualizzate, riprodotte come dettaglio e frammento, attraversate da una resa pittorica vibrante ed espressiva, che si pongono come antidoto ai rischi di spersonalizzazione del nuovo universo iconico degli anni sessanta.

Lo spazio al livello centrale del museo è dedicato al rapporto privilegiato con il Futurismo, fondamentale movimento italiano d’avanguardia, del quale ricorre nel 2009 il primo centenario. Con il Futurismo Schifano instaura infatti, in particolare alla metà degli anni sessanta, un rapporto di profonda, consapevole ed esplicita rivisitazione creativa, proprio in virtù dell’analogo interesse in presa diretta per la realtà tecnologica e urbana del presente.

All’ultimo piano sono esposte le opere dedicate da Schifano ai cieli stellati e al paesaggio desertico. L’artista è nato infatti 18

Il “tutto” globale della contemporaneità Vivendo tra Roma e New York, in un dialogo con il vitale e positivo panorama artistico degli Stati Uniti, Schifano sviluppa negli anni sessanta un proprio discorso parallelo, per quanto non sovrapponibile, rispetto alla Pop Art e ad Andy Warhol.

L’artista interpreta la medesima epoca della nuova comunicazione massificata, ma secondo un’appropriazione e rilettura dell’immaginario collettivo della pubblicità, del cinema, della fotografia: ne restituisce un’immagine pittorica e creativa, che tende a interpretare con straordinario spirito critico e anticipatore le nascenti dinamiche di relazione globalizzata della cultura visiva. La sua avidità per l’universo delle immagini gli permette di spaziare attraverso i generi e le icone del nuovo panorama socioculturale internazionale, dalla pubblicità al cinema, che egli include nella sua opera come “reperti” della civiltà presente, dando vita a un mondo parallelo e unico, filtrato dalla sua visione critica e dissacrante.

La figura di Schifano bene riflette, con questa sua ironia sovversiva, la concezione stessa sottesa alla genesi del MdM Museum, che con la sua presenza e attività intende sfatare il luogo comune di una Costa Smeralda puramente e superficialmente mondana, per aprirsi invece alla sua autentica vocazione globale: per questo motivo si è inteso cogliere e privilegiare proprio quegli affondi paradossali che l’artista stesso ha

will display an important series of works on photographic paper, Paesaggi TV (TV Landscapes), as well as a large flat-screen monitor for the public-showing of films and videos about Schifano, a parallel to his recurrent idea and images of the ‘screen’ as a place for experiencing his own creativity.

The Global ‘Everything’ of Contemporaneity Commuting between Rome and New York allowed Schifano to experience the lively and positive art scene of the United States. In the 1960s he developed his own expression parallel to, but independent of, pop art and Andy Warhol. He interpreted the same epoch of new mass communications but he did so by appropriating and reinterpreting the collective imagery of advertising, cinema and photography: this he turned into a pictorial and creative image that expressed, with a great critical and advanced spirit, the dawning dynamics of

visual culture’s global interconnections.

His hunger for the world of images led him to range between the genres and icons of the new international social-cultural panorama, from advertising to film, all of which he included in his works like archaeological ‘finds’ from present-day civilisation; he created in this way a unique parallel world, filtered through his critical and irreverent vision.

With his subversive irony, Schifano well reflects the concept behind the birth of the MdM Museum which, with its activity and standing, aims at undermining the stereotype of a purely mundane Costa Smeralda and, instead, at replacing it with a genuine global vocation: for this reason its aim is now to seize and make the most of those very paradoxes that the artist himself continually enacted in the sphere of art, communications and worldliness.

The presence of his work has allowed us to recreate this same kind of short-circuit, the cause of which, we have to admit just as he did, is to be found in a revisitation of futurism.

Given our that the current global dimension has invaded everyone’s life, it seems useful to trace out the path followed by Schifano in his anticipation of this global idea when he captured it, pictorially, in the logos of the biggest industries: icons that are not solely or even mainly those of the American imagination, but, as this occasion will allow us to demonstrate, are also a specific aspect of the burgeoning Italian industrial life in the 1960s. Rather than logos, however, we should perhaps talk about ‘billboards’ or ‘advertising’, about an urbanised dimension which, as with futurism, tells us something about the great changes in the ‘rising city’, and of the huge hoardings which were still being painted.

So we could not avoid paying tribute to the Italian Dream experienced by Schifano as he commuted, in a worldly manner, between the two geographical areas of Italy and the United States through the use of the medium which, together with film, made this possible: television. This was Schifano’s ideal companion for the whole his life and he even made use of its images in his Paesaggio TV. It is as 19
