Irene Langhorne Gibson and Charles Dana Gibson Irene Langhorne Gibson (1873-1956), wife of famed American illustrator Charles Dana Gibson, was born in Virginia, the daughter of railroad industrialist Chiswell Langhorne. Her sister was Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor, American-born British politician and the first woman seated as a Member of Parliament. The Langhorne sisters were known for their beauty and would later inspire some of Gibson’s work. In 1894, Langhorne met Gibson at Delmonico’s in New York City while attending a dinner in her honor. They married the following year, and Irene became the muse for her husband’s iconic “Gibson Girl.” She used her influence to take on numerous social and political issues in the early 20th century.

Much of her work focused on disadvantaged children, which would continue throughout her life. The earrings and the brooch shown here have descended through the family.

The diamond solitaire is from the descendants of Irene Gibson Emery, daughter of Irene Langhorne and Charles Dana Gibson, and John Josiah Emery of New York and Cincinnati. The diamond was given by John Josiah Emery to Irene Gibson Emery for their engagement in 1926. Emery was a real estate developer and philanthropist. He was a leading trustee and important benefactor of the Cincinnati Art Museum, an original member of the Cincinnati Public Recreation Commission, a trustee of the Children’s Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Summer Opera, the Conservatory of Music and the Taft Museum of Art, as well as a trustee of the National Cultural Center in Washington, DC.

Tiffany & Farnham The turn of the last century was an exciting time at Tiffany & Co. By 1900, chief designer Paulding Farnham had won dozens of awards, medals, and honors both at home and abroad for his leadership in jewelry design.

Farnham drew his artistic inspiration from a variety of natural forms and diverse cultures. After winning Tiffany & Co. several gold medals at the 1889 and 1900 Paris Exhibitions, including the Grand Prize for jewelry, Farnham was dethroned from his role when prodigal son Louis Comfort Tiffany took the reins following the death of his father. Both designers continued at Tiffany & Co. in an uneasy alliance for the next few years and benefited greatly from expertise of chief gemologist George Frederick Kunz, who traveled the world to source rare and unusual gemstones. Tiffany in particular favored the use of semiprecious gemstones for their inherent beauty rather than more important and costly gemstones, using the array of colors to enhance his designs. Together, Farnham and Tiffany revolutionized American jewelry design and their influences can still be felt today.
